The electric vehicle market lost some juice earlier in 2024, but October showed a sector comeback with some serious battery power. According to Cox Automotive, new EV sales were up 2.3% for the month and have cleared one million units for the year to date. Cox attributed the growth to aggressive dealer incentives and attractive vehicle leasing deals. But that growth has yet to translate into success for sector portfolio players. A case in point is the benchmark Global X Autonomous & Electric Vehicles ETF (DRIV), which is losing ground, down -6.61% for the year. That's the trouble with EV stocks and funds, market mavens say. While the long-term glide path looks clear enough for electric vehicles, mile marker to mile marker, the sector isn't gaining much steam. Here’s why those troubles may continue in 2025 – with one huge potential exception. “There is a lot of opportunity in the EV market, but it still faces significant challenges, mainly geared around consumer confusion," says David Boice, CEO of Team Velocity, an automotive technologies firm in Washington, D.C. "The upsides are that EVs are changing how the government can incentivize vehicles, allowing OEMs to explore new tech, and cities are constantly expanding infrastructure for mass adoption and sustainability." The downsides, unfortunately, are stacking up right now. "A lack of resources leaves consumers uncertain; tax credits, charging time, and long-term savings are all things Americans need to understand before buying an EV," Boice says. Here's a snapshot of what sector plays stand out and why. Tesla (TSLA). Elon Musk's favorite car company has seen its share price rise by 34% so far in 2024, comfortably ahead of the S&P 500 Index, which is up 26% for the year. When it comes to investing, companies that show they're in it for the long haul are almost always a good bet, and Tesla follows that script to the letter. "Tesla is an obvious choice as an EV favorite — they've practically defined the electric vehicles category," says Mark Whitley, founder and CEO at Whits Corporation, a sustainable technology firm in St. Louis, Mo. Investors shouldn't pay too much attention to the highly vocal Musk, but the Trump administration's aggressive stance on tariffs and EV credits is another story. "Despite Elon Musk saying he wants Trump to kill EV tax credits, Tesla benefits greatly from the current regulatory regime," Boyce says. Chargeback (CHPT). This Campbell, Cal.-based electric vehicle charging network provider went public last March via a special purchase acquisition company (SPAC) deal and has plummeted over 90% since the rollout. Yet the company operates 315,000 charging ports in the US and abroad, giving it a big advantage in a burgeoning industry. It also has over one million roaming charging points, which represents a robust number in another growing EV sector. The company's broad-based operational stance should eventually stabilize the stock price, but it also has other advantages. "Let's not forget the infrastructure part," Whitley says. "Companies like ChargePoint, which focuses on electric vehicle charging solutions, are a way to invest in the sector without betting on any specific vehicle." BHP Group, LTD (BHP). This nickel mining company is a good supply/demand stock right now, as nickel is one EV-linked commodity company that can take advantage of rising EV battery needs. The stock is down 24% for the year, but with production pressures pushing nickel demand up, BHP may make sense for sector investors over the long haul. "There's potential in businesses that develop EV infrastructure, like battery technology and charging networks," says Dre Villeroy, CEO at Beyorch, a private equity firm in Los Angeles, Cal. "They are essential to expanding the sector." Going Forward Ultimately, investors' short-term sector issues against long-term potential will matter most, and lead them to choose sector stocks accordingly. "I suspect EV sales will be very strong in December due to the prospect of the tax credit going away and may slow down for a bit as the ultimate resolution of the tax credit is under discussion in Washington," Boyce says. The future of a social media ban has become less clear as opposition politicians defy their leader's position and make their concerns known. Login or signup to continue reading A federal government proposal to ban children under 16 from accessing social media platforms like Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram is expected to be debated in Parliament on Tuesday. Though the world-leading proposal has received bipartisan support, and strong backing specifically from Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, there is some dissent within coalition ranks. "This is a test for Peter Dutton, about his leadership," cabinet minister Amanda Rishworth told the Today Show. Nationals politicians have expressed worries over privacy issues relating to age verification with Senator Matt Canavan noting this would affect all social media users. "You're going to have to verify everyone's age and so there's huge privacy and free speech implications," he told ABC radio. The bill doesn't require social media companies to destroy information, according to Senator Canavan, and the way users provide digital consent is often a rushed process, which breeds concerns about the way people hand over their information. There are also serious questions about whether the change will keep children off social media. "Despite the good intentions behind this bill, it may be completely ineffective or worse," Senator Canavan said. "If we make clumsy hurdles for social media use, my eight-year-old will be able to get around them, but your 80-year-old grandma won't." Fellow Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie added that the use of digital ID was worrying to some, though the government had ruled out its use in age assurance. The coalition has said it would reserve its final decision on the bill until answers had been received from the government, though concerns have arisen over the legislation's rushed consultation process. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland introduced the reform to parliament on Thursday, which she said would make the online environment better for young people. The consultation period for groups and individuals to make submissions closed a day later on Friday. A senate committee on Monday held a one-day hearing and is due to report back on Tuesday. In submissions to the inquiry, a number of groups, including social media companies, pointed to the short notice period. Snap Inc, which runs Snapchat, wrote the "the extremely compressed timeline" had allowed stakeholders little more than 24 hours to provide a response which "severely" constrained thorough analysis and informed debate. X, formerly Twitter, also criticised the "unreasonably short time-frame of one day". Meta, which owns Facebook, wrote there had been "minimal consultation or engagement" and urged the government to wait for the results of the age assurance trial before progressing with the legislation. TikTok said despite the "time-limited review" there were a range of "serious, unresolved problems" that the government must clarify to ensure there wouldn't be unintended consequences. Given the widespread support for the ban, Senator Canavan insists there is no need to rush analysis. The Greens and some independents have opposed the ban and called on the government to address social media harms through other paths like implementing a statutory duty of care on tech giants. "The problem with a ban is that you're basically letting the platforms off the hook," independent MP Zoe Daniel told ABC. Strictly fans have been left raging over recent weeks, after the couples saved from elimination hasn't seemed to have reflected the judges' scoring. Many of their accusations have fallen on head judge Shirley Ballas , with furious viewers taking to social media to vent after seeing Pete Wicks saved from the dance off - despite his low scores from the judges. Saturday's episode saw the issue come to a head for those at home, after Jamie Borthwick was given the boot, despite Pete Wicks also ending up towards the bottom of the leaderboard. Fans were baffled when Pete survived another week without even going to the dance-off. One angry viewer wrote on X: "WHAT? Pete is safe and Montell and Jamie in the dance off. Absolute joke! #Strictly." A second said: "Why is PETE not in DANCE OFF #strictly this is a joke a farce and a fix! #Strictly" with another commenting: "Who keeps voting for Pete? He is the worst of the lot, why do people keep voting him in. Montell & Johannes and Jamie & Michelle in the bottom two? Awful result #Strictly." The broadcaster explained: "The Strictly Come Dancing scoring system combines judges and viewers votes. No couple is guaranteed to be safe on judges' votes alone however, and the viewers' votes can always influence the outcome. This means each week any couple can face or be saved from the dance off with the public vote. In the event of a tie, the viewers' votes will take precedence over the Judges' scoring." It goes on to say that after the performances, judges scores are added together to rank the couples. It goes on to explain that the couple ranked highest will be "awarded a number of points equal to the number of couples competing that evening." The website gives an example to try to explain the baffling system, adding: "So, for example, if seven couples are competing, the points awarded to the highest ranked couple (based on the Judges total score) will be 7, the couple with the second highest score from the Judges will receive 6 points and so on in the same downward sequential order." If there is a tie, with two or more couples getting the same points, the couple below those in the tie will be "awarded one point below the points awarded to each of the tied couples." If that wasn't enough to make your head hurt, the show adds in the viewers votes to the mix, saying they are "collated and independently verified". When both the judges' scores and viewers' votes are combined, if there is a tie, "the couple in the tie with the highest number of viewer votes will be deemed to be ahead on the leaderboard". Lost yet? To add to the mystery of the Strictly voting system, the BBC says it reserves the right to keep the viewers' votes secret, adding: "Releasing voting figures could affect the way that people vote, and also have an impact on the participants. We therefore do not disclose the exact voting figures." They confirm this system is approved by the Information Commissioner, meaning they do not have to disclose the voting figures under the Freedom of Information Act.
