It’s unclear if it’s drones or something else, but for sure the nighttime sightings are producing tons of talk, a raft of conspiracy theories and craned necks looking skyward. Cropping up on local news and social media sites around Thanksgiving, the saga of the drones reported over New Jersey has reached incredible heights. This week seems to have begun a new, higher-profile chapter: Lawmakers are demanding (but so far not getting) explanations from federal and state authorities about what’s behind them. Gov. Montana’s licensing board for outfitters and guides has opened 100 investigations against licensees — although the state agency overseeing that board has demanded those now under review receive an apology. The source of those investigations is a legislative audit that found 138 alleged violations in which outfitters or guides did not self-report criminal convictions while renewing their license or becoming licensed for the first time. The auditors triggered the investigations when they notified the state Board of Outfitters about the unreported violations. , among other things, ultimately recommended the Board of Outfitters move away from self-reporting requirements and establish rules to conduct background checks of those seeking licensure to lower the risk level "to an acceptable level for the board." And while the Legislative Audit Division contended its work was done properly, auditors received a sharp rebuke last week from the Montana Department of Labor, which houses the Board of Outfitters. Sarah Swanson, director at DLI, contended those licensees' due process rights were violated when legislative auditors conducted "dragnet" background checks on licensed outfitters and guides, something neither the Board of Outfitters nor the Department of Labor have the authority to do themselves. In total, the Legislative Audit Division found licensed guides or outfitters had 234 citations, 30 felonies and 114 misdemeanor convictions. The search was narrowed down only to violations that could affect licensure, including hunting and fishing regulations, recreation and crimes against a person or property. "The source of these complaints was a background check that no one consented to or were notified it was happening," Swanson told the Legislative Audit Committee during an Dec. 17 meeting. The state labor department oversees 29 professional licensing boards in Montana. Swanson said they all have different standards for when licensees need to report criminal convictions, but the department is now working on standardizing those requirements. The 138 cases legislative auditors reported to the licensing board included some outfitters or guides who had not renewed their licenses, Swanson said. Others were dismissed because of instances of "same name, wrong person," hence the 100 open investigations at the Board of Outfitters instead of 138, she told lawmakers. Swanson urged the legislative committee to reject the audit outright and clarify in law whether the Legislative Audit Division had the authority to conduct the background checks as it did. Angus McIver, who heads up the Legislative Audit Division, said his office has done this type of research in several instances in the 20 years he has worked there, and said the process was not a criminal background check, which in most cases requires consent from the subject. He said this process was a Criminal Justice Information Network "data match," which largely leaned on public conviction information. He said Swanson had misunderstood the process. He added the committee in fact does not "accept or reject" any audit recommendations. Rather, lawmakers move forward with policy decisions that are informed by the information they provide. The Defence Force admits it will have to stop doing a "raft" of things and scale down missions due to its financial crunch. On Tuesday it confirmed it had a $360m deficit looming next year , after RNZ revealed that earlier in the day. "So that number, I don't know how it's got out," Chief of Defence Air Marshal Tony Davies told MPs during scrutiny week at Parliament. While all key missions were still going ahead, with eight or nine deployed, that would become more difficult, he said. "There's a whole raft of things that we have to pause or turn off to make sure that we can keep our flying sailing, shooting and deploying going. "There's a lot of things we can't afford to do at the moment." The likes of training, travel and building relationships with overseas partners would pause or stop but it had "not failed to to deploy or do an operation". "The issue really is it takes us longer to prepare to do those missions and those deployments, and we might not be able to send the same number of people that we have previously sent or for as long. Davies confirmed they faced a $360m deficit in operating costs next year. A memo had gone out last week, which also said an option was to cut its wage bill by another $50m, as RNZ had reported. "Three hundred and sixty million dollars is the figure we're looking at, at the moment. Now, is that going to result in output failure for us? No," Davies said. "I'll have to say the leaking of that figure was not intended," he said, after Green MP Teanau Tuiono asked what the plan was to ensure the deficit did not affect national security. Syria's Bashar Assad regime was at stake as Syrian anti-regime forces rallied toward the capital Damascus after capturing the key city of Homs on Saturday. Since the groups swept into Aleppo a week ago, regime defenses have crumbled at a dizzying speed as anti-regime fighters seized a string of major cities and rose up in places where the rebellion had long seemed over. The twin threats to strategically vital Homs and the capital Damascus now pose an existential danger to the Assad family's five-decade reign over Syria and the continued influence there of its main regional backer Iran. A Homs resident, and army and opposition sources said the fighters had breached government defenses from the north and east of the city. A commander said they had taken control of an army camp and villages outside the city. State television reported that the insurgents had not penetrated Homs although it said they were on the city outskirts, where it said the military was striking them with artillery and drones. Anti-regime forces have seized almost the entire southwest within 24 hours, and they have advanced to within 30 kilometers (20 miles) of Damascus as government forces fell back, sources said. Underscoring the possibility of an uprising in the capital, protesters took to the streets in several Damascus suburbs, ripping up Assad posters and tearing down a statue of his father, Hafez Assad, uncontested by army or police. Some were joined by soldiers who had changed into civilian clothes and deserted, residents said. However, the state news agency reported that Assad remains in Damascus and the military said it was reinforcing around the capital and south. Iran-backed Iraqi militias are on high alert, with thousands of heavily armed fighters ready to deploy to Syria, many of them amassed near the border. Iraq does not seek military intervention in Syria, a government spokesman said Friday. Britain warned Assad that any chemical weapons use was a red line and would be met with "appropriate action." The Homs resident said he had seen the rebels advance past a Syrian Air Force base in the north of the city that was considered a major defensive area. The resident later said fighting was audible in the city outskirts. On Monday night, the entire Simpsons universe gets to experience it in a way not many could have imagined. The prime-time matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys will also take place at Springfield’s Atoms Stadium as part of “The Simpsons Funday Football” alternate broadcast. The altcast will be streamed on ESPN+, Disney+, and NFL+ (on mobile devices). ESPN and ABC have the main broadcast, while ESPN2 will carry the final “ManningCast” of the regular season. The replay will be available on Disney+ for 30 days. Globally, more than 145 countries will have access to either live or on replay. “We’re such huge football fans, and the Simpsons audience and the football audience, I feel, are like the same audience of just American families and football. And the Simpsons are so much a part of the DNA of the American family and culture that for us to, like, mush them together in this crazy video game, it’s so fun,” said Matt Selman, executive producer of “The Simpsons.” While the game is the focal point, the alternate broadcast, in some ways, will resemble a three-hour episode of “The Simpsons.” It starts with Homer eating too many hot dogs and having a dream while watching football. Homer joins the Cowboys in the dream while Bart teams up with the Bengals. Lisa and Marge will be sideline reporters. “That’s the beginning of the story, and the story continues through the entire game until Homer wakes up from his dream at the end of the game. It is like a complete story, and the NFL game will happen in between. This is the second year ESPN has done an alternate broadcast for an NFL game. Even though “Homer at the Bat” remains the consensus favorite sports episode for many Simpsons fans, there have been football ones such as “Bart Star” and “Lisa The Greek.” There also was a Super Bowl-themed one after Fox’s broadcast of Super Bowl 33 between Denver and Atlanta in 1999. Even though “The Simpsons” remains a staple on Fox’s prime-time schedule, it is part of the Disney family after their acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. All 35 seasons are on Disney+. The show’s creators have worked with ESPN and the NFL to make sure the look and sound is definitely Simpsonsesque. The theme song is a mash-up of “The Simpsons” opening and “Monday Night Football’s” iconic “Heavy Action.” There have also been pre-recorded skits and bits to use during the broadcast featuring Simpson’s legendary voices Hank Azaria, Nancy Cartwright, Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, and Yeardley Smith. The telecast will be entirely animated, with the players’ movements in sync with what is happening in real-time on the field. That is done through player-tracking data enabled by the NFL’s Next Gen Stats system and Sony’s Beyond Sports Technology. While Next Gen Stats tracks where players are on the field with a tracking chip in the shoulder pads, there is skeletal data tracking and limb tracking data — which uses 29 points per player — to get closer to the player’s movements. The other data tracking will allow Beyond Sports and Disney to add special characters to the game. For example, there might be a play where Lisa catches the ball and goes 30 yards instead of Cincinnati’s Tee Higgins. “Lisa is much smaller than the rest of the players. So, in real life, the ball would go over her head, but now, with data processing, we can take the ball and make it go exactly into her hands. So for the viewer, it still looks believable, and it all makes sense,” said Beyond Sports co-founder Nicolaas Westerhof. The other major challenge is making “The Simpsons” two-dimensional cartoon characters into 3-D simulations. Szykowny and his team worked to make that a reality over the past couple of months. “That’s a big leap of faith for them to say, hey, we trust you to make our characters 3-D and work with it. Our ESPN creative studio team has done a wonderful job,” Szykowny said. Lisa, Krusty, Nelson, Milhouse and Ralph will be with Bart and the Bengals; while Carl, Barney, Lenny and Moe join up with with Homer and the Cowboys. I must admit I was a little self-conscious when I first started wearing the C40i earbuds, as they look a bit like earrings. The fit is interesting. The venue was the Pakistan Stock Exchange where the KSE-100 index suffered the biggest single-day plunge in its history. Equities, as they say, fell like ninepins. Obviously, the political situation had suddenly triggered a rush of panic among investors and businessmen. The market dropped by 3.6 per cent or 3,506 points. This means that the situation had become drastic, portending dire consequences. So, what was actually happening? But wait. The very next day, on Wednesday, the market recovered. Not just that, the benchmark index rose by 4.96 per cent or 4,696.09 points. And this marked the largest single-day surge in the index’s history. Such a fall and such a rise within the space of 24 hours would constitute an unimaginable dramatic shift in the affairs of a country. It would be hard for a writer of fiction to imagine a plot to justify this transformation. Well, we know what transpired around D-Chowk in Islamabad during the long night between Tuesday and Wednesday. The large procession of PTI protesters that had bravely breached the Red Zone was routed by the security forces when an operation was launched after nightfall. Its leaders, Ali Amin Gandapur and Bushra Bibi quickly left the scene, and the protesters ran in confusion for safety. There is, of course, a story to tell about the entire encounter. The D-Day for the PTI’s march on Islamabad was set on November 24. In real terms, a battle was in the offing between the multitudes that the PTI was planning to mobilise and the security forces of the government. The PTI leaders boasted like boxers do before stepping in the ring. It was really meant to be a very serious confrontation, mainly because the PTI had named it the final, ‘do or die’ campaign to, in a sense, topple the present government and win the release of Imran Khan. Violence was inherent in this scheme. And it was violence that settled the score late on Tuesday night. Not unexpectedly, the PTI, not able to mount the show it had promised, lost the battle. One measure of this is the in-fighting that is taking place in the top ranks of the party. Thankfully, the heavens did not fall. There certainly was a lot of violence and the PTI leaders have claimed many deaths – the numbers being in dispute – of their activists from firing from the security forces. But the kind of upheaval that many observers had anticipated did not occur. In fact, the stage for long had been set for a scenario of national disaster if Imran Khan were not to be released and actions against the PTI were not retracted. I admit to also being very depressed about the overall political state of affairs. It was against this backdrop that the PTI decided to go for a final showdown with the government, primarily to put pressure to secure Imran Khan’s release. The nation held its breath. Let me give you some idea of how prominent analysts were looking at it. On Wednesday, I read these words by a respected columnist (penned surely before Tuesday night’s denouement): “Most worrisome, however, is that any direct confrontation between the protesters and the security forces could lead to a civil war-like situation with disastrous consequences for the safety and unity of the country”. A civil war? For the moment, the main strife is playing out in the PTI itself. Bushra Bibi, who is believed to have led Imran Khan to power with her supernatural tactics, is at the centre of wrangling over how the battle was lost. She had revealed her credentials when she said those words, alluding to Saudi Arabia. PTI supporters are at a loss to understand the setback that the party has suffered. Where were the millions who were supposed to have joined the march? Anyhow, what lessons do we have here about the politics of agitation? Was it ever realistic for the PTI to assume that it could stage a social revolution with the massive popular support it has? And, for that matter, what revolutionary ideas have the party articulated to lead the way for a brighter future? Not being able to adequately sum up the events of this week, I believe that this has been a sobering experience for all of us. This kind of confrontation, reflective of the intense polarisation that has polluted our politics, makes it even more difficult to resolve the fundamental issues that have made us so miserable. All the time that the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was playing his politics, sectarian violence continued to rage in Kurram and there were more killings despite a ceasefire. As for the preemptive measures adopted by the authorities to block the march of the protesters, the daily lives of the citizens of Islamabad and other cities were disrupted for days. Were there no less painful and more inventive ways to deal with the threat of the march and the ‘dharna’? A lot is happening on various fronts in the wake of Tuesday night’s retreat of the PTI’s march. PTI workers are incensed by the absence of many leaders from the march and the lack of courage of those who were there. Most of them are baffled by what has happened. There is a lot of confusion about the reported willingness of Imran Khan, who was allowed visits by party leaders in the early phase of the march to divert the march from D-Chowk. It seemed that Bushra Bibi insisted on proceeding towards D-Chowk, with dreadful consequences. Typically, there are surprising variations in statements made by PTI leaders regarding the deaths of PTI workers caused by security forces. Figures range from eight to that outlandish allegation of 278 deaths by Sardar Khosa. On its part, the government has rejected all these claims. Imran Khan’s charismatic appeal may be intact but the party, in its functional aspects, has broken. Can it be rebuilt as a less volatile outfit? The writer is a senior journalist. According to industry experts, Mexicans are increasingly switching from traditionally dominant sedans to Chinese vehicles due to a combination of comfort, technology and price. It is no small feat in a country home to factories of foreign brands such as Audi and BMW, and where until a few years ago imported Chinese cars were stigmatized, as in other parts of the world. According to the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors the high-end segment of the market registered a sales drop of 8.1 percent from January to November. Audi’s sales slumped by 21.9 percent, while BMW, which includes the Mini brand, saw no growth in Latin America’s second-largest economy, home to 129 million people. Mercedes-Benz suffered a 9.8 percent decline, according to the state-run statistics institute INEGI.In contrast, Motornation, which sells the BAIC, JMC and Changan brands in Mexico, saw an 8.8 percent increase in sales in the first 11 months of this year, while those of Jetour rose 131 percent, it said. WASHINGTON (AP) — A Dallas man who tried to fly overseas to join the Russian military and fight against Ukraine was sentenced on Friday to six months in prison for violating the terms of his probation for storming the U.S. Capitol four years ago. Kevin Loftus, a 56-year-old veteran of the U.S. Army, was stopped from boarding an Oct. 28 flight from Dallas to Tbilisi, Georgia, by way of Istanbul, Turkey, when Turkish Airlines identified a “security flag” associated with him, according to federal prosecutors. Loftus didn’t have the court’s permission to travel internationally or to drive from Texas to Iowa, where the FBI arrested him three days after his flight plans fell apart, prosecutors said. Loftus told the FBI that he had hoped to secure a 90-day visa to travel to Russia, where he intended to apply for temporary residency. The judge said Loftus has repeatedly violated court orders. “He doesn’t think these rules should apply to him,” Friedrich said. “He wants to be above the law.” Defense attorney Benjamin Schiffelbein said Loftus wanted to enlist in the Russian military because he “felt bad” for Russian soldiers and wanted to help them. “He had no idea whether they could make use of him,” the lawyer said. Loftus, a six-year Army veteran, intended to permanently relocate to another country, according to prosecutors. “And his planned travel was for the express purpose of joining a foreign army to take up arms against one of this country’s allies and in opposition to this country’s foreign policy,” they wrote. In January 2021, Loftus traveled from Wisconsin to Washington, D.C., to attend then-President Donald Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally near the White House. After joining the mob of Trump supporters at the Capitol, he entered the building and took photographs. He spent approximately five minutes inside the Capitol. Loftus was arrested at his Wisconsin home several days after the riot. He pleaded guilty in October 2021 to a misdemeanor count of parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building. After his arrest, Loftus posted comments about his case on social media, referring to himself as “famous” and a “hero” for taking part in the Jan. 6 attack. “Loftus also stated that he gained that fame by ‘standing up for all Americans’ because he ‘broke the law,’ and he would file lawsuits against unidentified persons after the criminal case was over,” prosecutors wrote . Prosecutors recommended 30 days of imprisonment for Loftus, but Friedrich initially sentenced him to three years of probation. For his probation violation, prosecutors requested a six-month prison sentence. They noted that Loftus, while on probation, also was arrested in December 2023 and charged with driving while intoxicated in Richardson, Texas. Loftus was required to attend a substance abuse program, but he avoided jail time for that violation. Over 1,500 people have been charged with Capitol riot-related crimes. More than 1,000 of them have been convicted and sentenced, with roughly two-thirds receiving a term of imprisonment ranging from a few days to 22 years . Trump has repeatedly vowed to pardon Capitol rioters, but the district court judges in Washington, D.C., typically have refused to postpone sentencings, plea hearings and trials until after the president-elect returns to the White House.

NoneSeattle, WA (Grist) "Every state legislator can now look to Washington and say, "This is a winning issue,"" Governor Jay Inslee said. "This is something you can defend and win big on." The people of Washington state elected to save the most ambitious price on carbon in the country. A large majority of voters, 62 percent, rejected a ballot initiative to repeal the state's Climate Commitment Act, the cap-and-trade law that has already raised more than $2 billion for cleaning up transportation, shifting to clean energy, and helping people adapt to the effects of a changing climate. On an otherwise depressing election night for voters who consider climate change a top concern, there was an air of victory at the Seattle Convention Center on Tuesday evening, where Governor Jay Inslee and a couple hundred organizers with the campaign opposing the repeal gathered for a watch party. As news rolled in that former President Donald Trump was the favorite to win the presidential election, many in the crowd did their best to focus on their success in rescuing the state's landmark carbon-cutting law. Inslee, the outgoing Democratic governor whose signature climate legislation was at risk, said that the results should embolden states to take action on climate change. "I really feel it was important from a national perspective, because every state legislator can now look to Washington and say, "This is a winning issue,"" Inslee said in an interview with Grist. "This is something you can defend and win big on. And we won big." Inslee said that the effort to defeat the initiative had emphasized the concrete, local benefits of the program to voters, rather than getting into the weeds about how cap-and-trade works. "We focused on the easiest thing for people to wrap their minds and hearts around," Inslee said, pointing to the tangible economic benefits that the repeal would take away: the funding for transportation, schools, and fighting fires. Putting any kind of price on carbon has long been seen as politically risky. Opponents of Washington's Climate Commitment Act, including Brian Heywood, the hedge fund manager driving the repeal effort, blamed it for raising gas prices. The ballot measure wouldn't have only struck down the state's price on pollution -- it would have also prevented the state from ever enacting a similar policy in the future. The resounding public support for Washington's cap-and-trade program "is going to echo coast to coast," said Joe Fitzgibbon, a Democratic state representative who helped pass the legislation in 2021, during a speech at the convention center. Officials in states including New Jersey, Maryland, and New York have been eyeing similar policies, and they've been watching the results in Washington to see how voters responded. "I know that there are states that are thinking, "What can we do?"" Fitzgibbon told Grist. "And especially when there's a vacuum at the federal level, that's when I think you see the most motivation in state capitols to move." Cap-and-trade already exists in California, and in a more limited form among a network of states in the East, but Washington's law is more ambitious, aiming to slash emissions nearly in half by 2030, using 1990 levels as a baseline, and by 95 percent by 2050. "Washington state is the gold standard for how we tackle climate change in a way that's inclusive, in a way that's politically popular, in a way that actually will decarbonize," said Joe Nguyễn, a Democratic state senator who chairs the state's Environment, Energy, and Technology Committee. A review of existing climate policies in 41 countries in August found that carbon pricing programs were the most likely of any policy to lead to large emissions cuts. The Climate Commitment Act's passage in 2021 followed more than a decade of failed attempts to put a price on pollution in Washington state. It requires companies to buy pollution permits at quarterly auctions, a way to generate money for climate solutions and at the same time incentivize businesses to reduce their emissions. The number of permits available decreases over time. The program has so far raised billions to make public transit free for youth, install energy-efficient heat pumps in homes, and reduce local air pollution, among other measures. Across the state, almost 600 organizations joined the "No on 2117" coalition to defend the law, ultimately raising $16 million. Many businesses, religious organizations, health advocates, and agricultural organizations were on board. At the event on Tuesday, there were security guards representing unionized labor, the chair of the Suquamish Tribe, and a public policy manager from the tech giant Amazon. "We put together, all of us, the most extraordinary coalition in the history of this state, on any issue, ever," said Gregg Small, executive director of the group Climate Solutions, in a speech at the convention center. The initiative faced other headwinds. Ballots explicitly alerted voters to the fiscal costs of the repeal, despite appeals to the state Supreme Court by the Washington State Republican Party to get that language removed. In addition, Washington's gas prices -- which soared to $5, the highest in the country, in 2023 -- have now come down to around $4 a gallon. Another ballot initiative, which would complicate Washington state's plans to get off natural gas, was too close to call on Wednesday. With ballots still left to count, 51 percent of voters approved of the measure, which targets new building codes that make installing natural gas more difficult and legislation to help the state's largest utility accelerate its use of clean energy. Now that Washington's cap-and-trade program survived the repeal, the state can move forward with plans to link its carbon market up with California and Quebec's. The state can also begin the years-long process of implementing the Climate Commitment Act's program to regulate air quality. This summer, the state began releasing grants to help reduce air pollution in "overburdened" communities, but much of the work had been on hold as the state waited to see if voters would keep the law, according to David Mendoza, the director of public engagement and policy at the Nature Conservancy in Washington. The whole repeal initiative might have been a blessing in disguise, Nguyễn said. It gave people a chance to pay attention to all the work that Washington state had done on climate change that might have otherwise been ignored. A high-speed passenger train collided with a fire engine at a crossing on Saturday in Florida, injuring three firefighters and at least a dozen train passengers, authorities said. The crash happened at 10.45am in crowded downtown Delray Beach, multiple news outlets reported. The Brightline train was stopped on the tracks, its front destroyed, about a block away from the Delray Beach fire rescue truck, its ladder ripped off and strewn in the grass several yards away, The Sun-Sentinel newspaper reported. The Delray Beach Fire Rescue said in a social media post that three Delray Beach firefighters were in stable condition at a hospital. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue took 12 people from the train to the hospital with minor injuries. Emmanuel Amaral rushed to the scene on his golf cart after hearing a loud crash and screeching train brakes from where he was having breakfast a couple of blocks away. He saw firefighters climbing out of the window of their damaged truck and pulling injured colleagues away from the tracks. One of their helmets came to rest several hundred feet away from the crash. “The front of that train is completely smashed, and there was even some of the parts to the fire truck stuck in the front of the train, but it split the car right in half. It split the fire truck right in half, and the debris was everywhere,” Mr Amaral said. Brightline officials did not immediately comment on the crash. A spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board said it was still gathering information about the crash and had not decided yet whether it will investigate. The NTSB is already investigating two crashes involving Brightline’s high-speed trains that killed three people early this year at the same crossing along the railroad’s route between Miami and Orlando. More than 100 people have died after being hit by trains since Brightline began operations in July 2017 – giving the railroad the worst death rate in the United States. But most of those deaths have been either suicides, pedestrians who tried to run across the tracks ahead of a train or drivers who went around crossing gates instead of waiting for a train to pass. Kinder Morgan Announces 2025 Financial ExpectationsBy Allyson Chiu The Washington Post If you’re taking stock of your kitchen tools, a cursory scan around the room will probably reveal a common trend: black plastic. “Black plastic is in virtually every kitchen in America,” said Judith Enck, a former senior Environmental Protection Agency official in the Obama administration who now heads Beyond Plastics, an advocacy organization. But she and other experts are urging people to avoid using spoons, spatulas, ladles, tongs and containers made from the ubiquitous material. A growing body of research suggests black plastic, which can be made from recycled electronic waste, could contain toxic chemicals that might leach into your food while you’re cooking. Here’s what you need to know about how to deal with the black plastic in your kitchen. A recent peer-reviewed analysis of black plastic household products, including food trays and kitchen utensils, found that 17 out of 20 items tested (or 85 percent) contained brominated and organophosphate flame retardants. The chemicals detected in the study are often found in electronics and have been linked to a number of health hazards. “We know for a fact that these toxic flame retardants can migrate out of the products that they’re in and into our environment,” said Megan Liu, who co-authored the study. Heat, she noted, can make it easier for these chemicals to leach out. Liu, science and policy manager at Toxic-Free Future, an environmental health research and advocacy group that conducted the study along with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, said researchers did not link the exposure levels in the tested products to specific health outcomes. There is some debate over how much risk plastic kitchen tools contaminated with flame retardants could pose to people. Broadly, exposure to these chemicals have been linked to cancer and hormone disruption, but so far there hasn’t been enough research to link regular use of contaminated cooking utensils or food containers to health problems. The latest study has come under scrutiny for incorrectly calculating the safe exposure limit for Decabromodiphenyl ether, or BDE-209, one of the 11 flame retardants the researchers detected in the tested products. The paper estimated that using contaminated cooking utensils could cause a median intake of 34,700 nanograms per day, which the authors wrote “would approach” the maximum exposure levels considered safe by the Environmental Protection Agency for an adult weighing roughly 130 pounds. But that math was wrong. The maximum level is 420,000 nanograms per day, not 42,000. The study has since been corrected. Liu said the error does not change the study’s conclusions, that the presence of toxic chemicals in items people use on a daily basis should prompt concern. Some of the products tested contained multiple flame retardants, not only BDE-209. “There’s really no safe level of exposure to these harmful toxic flame retardants,” she said, adding these substances can build up in the body. Liu and other experts emphasized there’s a need for greater regulation and restrictions that keep these chemicals out of consumer products they’re not supposed to be in, they said. “We try and recycle plastic, but this is an example of where the recycling sort of breaks down and introduces potentially hazardous chemicals into products that they were never intended to be in,” said Andrew Turner, a plastic pollution expert at the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom. In the meantime, here are some steps you can take to help reduce your risk. It’s likely that not all the black plastic products in your kitchen contain recycled electronic waste, but it can be difficult to know for sure. Labeling that can tell consumers whether a product has recycled content isn’t always available. America’s Test Kitchen, notes that if kitchen utensils are made from virgin, or new, black plastic, they might still be okay to use because that material is unlikely to contain the contaminants found in recycled products. • Start with what touches your food. Instead of trying to guess which items might be contaminated, some experts recommend getting rid of anything made from black plastic that comes into contact with food. • If it gets exposed to heat, throw it out. If it feels overwhelming to purge your kitchen and replace everything at once, consider prioritizing getting rid of black plastic items that most often come into contact with hot pans and food or cooking oil, for example spatulas or stirring spoons, Turner said. “The concern about cooking utensils is the fact that firstly, you’re heating something up, which is bound to release more stuff,” said Turner, who published a peer-reviewed paper in 2018 highlighting the presence of recycled electronic waste in black plastic products. “Secondly, if you’re heating in oil, the oil acts like a solvent for the flame retardants. It’s a better way of getting flame retardants out of plastic than, say, water — even boiling water.” • Don’t use it to store or reheat food. You should also get rid of black plastic containers and generally avoid reheating food in any type of plastic or exposing the material to other sources of heat, such as a dishwasher. “Never put any plastic into the microwave,” Enck said. “I’m concerned because a lot of takeout food containers have black plastic on the bottom, and if you’re busy, you may just throw all the spaghetti from last night into the microwave, and you’re going to get some toxics in the marinara sauce.” • Don’t recycle it. Once you’ve collected your unwanted black plastic, don’t put it in with your recycling, Enck said. Recycling facilities typically don’t have the technology to sort black plastic, so the items end up discarded as waste, she said. “I just threw it all out in my garbage can,” said Enck, who got rid of black plastic in her kitchen. Plastic is used so often in cooking tools because the material can be molded and has the right balance of rigidity and flex to accomplish many tasks around the kitchen, said Hannah Crowley, executive editor for America’s Test Kitchen product reviews. “Plastic in general is incredibly versatile, which is why it has wormed its way into every facet of our lives,” Crowley said. But it can be easy and affordable to replace black plastic tools with ones made from wood, stainless steel or silicone. For food containers, experts recommend glass. Wood: Wood can be a great material for cooking tools, such as stirring spoons and bowls. Consider purchasing bamboo items, said Shanika Whitehurst, associate director of product sustainability, research and testing at Consumer Reports. Not only can bamboo be a more sustainable source of wood, the material is durable and cost-effective, she said. “You can find bamboo and utensils everywhere from Walmart to Macy’s,” she said. “They work great. They don’t take on too much of the food smells.” But don’t put wood products in the dishwasher, Crowley said. Because it’s a porous natural material, it will soak in a lot of water if it’s left in a wet environment and drying it out could crack it. Wood products also typically need to be oiled periodically. Stainless steel: Stainless steel can be a more low-maintenance option. “It can go in the dishwasher, no concerns there,” Crowley said. “It’s not going to break. You don’t need to oil it.” But, she noted, metal tools might not be the right choice if you want to protect your pans, particularly nonstick ones. Stainless steel could scratch certain pans if you’re really scraping at the surface. If you’re using stainless steel utensils, Crowley suggests cooking in a cast iron pan, which you don’t have to be as careful with. Silicone: Metal and wood tools aren’t as flexible as plastic, so if you’re in need of a tool that can easily remove cake batter from a bowl or clean your pan of scrambled eggs, silicone is an option, Crowley said. Silicone is made with plastic, and experts note that they’re still trying to understand potential risks. But Crowley said these products are typically designed to withstand higher temperatures than plastic utensils. Whitehurst recommended making sure that any silicone cooking tools you buy are labeled food grade. Many wood, stainless steel and silicone tools can be purchased for less than $20. You can also find deals buying secondhand utensils from places such as Goodwill or Salvation Army. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit Wednesday against chemical giants 3M and DuPont, accusing them of decades-long misrepresentations and omissions regarding the safety of PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” sold for use in countless consumer products. These products, sold under brand names such as Teflon, Stainmaster, and Scotchgard, have been staples in households across the nation despite mounting evidence that they contain chemicals that are harmful to human health. “These companies knew for decades that PFAS chemicals could cause serious harm to human health yet continued to advertise them as safe for household use around families and children,” Paxton said in a press release. “Texas is taking action to penalize these companies and hold them accountable for deceiving Texans into buying consumer products without vital information.” Daniel Turner, a spokesperson for DuPont, said in an email that the company has never manufactured PFOA and PFOS — two types of PFAS chemicals — or firefighting foam. "While we don’t comment on litigation matters, we believe this complaint is without merit, and we look forward to vigorously defending our record of safety, health and environmental stewardship," Turned wrote. Representatives of 3M could not be immediately reached for comment. PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, belong to a family of manmade chemicals used to make products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water. They’ve been used in industry and consumer products worldwide since the 1940s and have earned the name “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down and can persist in water and soil indefinitely. The lawsuit was filed in Johnson County nine days after a Texas Tribune story featured farmers in that county who have sued a fertilizer company, alleging the fertilizer they sell, which is made from municipal waste, contained PFAS that poisoned their land and killed their livestock. The farmers say they are not able to make a living off their own land because of the contamination. Dana Ames, the environmental crime investigator for Johnson County who discovered the contamination on the farmers' land, said the lawsuit represents a significant step forward in the ongoing fight against PFAS contamination. Michelle Compton and her son Liam own M&L Farm — short for Mommy & Liam's Farm — which is a mobile petting zoo based in Huntington. Liam’s father, William, is also involved in the family business. “We started our farm in 2020 when the pandemic happened,” Michelle said. “We started it for our son. He spent those three years at home due to his medical (issues). The animals helped with his social interaction.” Liam is autistic and is immune compromised. He requires oxygen 24/7, Michelle said. She said since he is a big animal lover, the petting zoo made sense. The Comptons have almost 50 animals, but they usually take two pigs (an adult and a baby), two goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens and ducks to set up the petting zoo. “Liam is one of the sweetest and most caring boys you could ever meet. He loves being out in the community and sharing his animals. I'm so proud of him,” Michelle said. She said Liam is homeschooled, so he gets excited going places. Panchabati Baske, 50, does not mind snakes in paddy fields. “These are non-poisonous and there are many of them around,” she dismisses them, as she walks through her fields, as a snake slithers through. “See this crop of Kerala Sundari? Some of it has fallen in the recent cyclone Dana but look at the yield,” Baske says. “Will someone believe that no [lab-made] fertilisers have been used while cultivating this?” She is standing amid a dense lush yellow crop of paddy, in Damodarpur village, Nayagram block of West Bengal’s Jhargram district located almost 200 kilometres from Kolkata. Baske is convinced that organic varieties yield more grains of paddy per stalk. “I have counted. Kerala Sundari has about 350 to 400 grains in every stalk, whereas Swana, (a regular variety of rice cultivated using fertilisers) has about 250 grains,” she says. For the past several years, Baske has been cultivating indigenous varieties of rice without using any store-bought pesticides. She is a cultivator associated with Aamon, a farmer producer company, which was registered in October 2020. Aamon in Bengali, is a reference to the June-July period of rice sowing. Aamon is an all-woman initiative that has about 8,000 farmers across 106 villages in Nayagram block. The company, formed in October 2020, started with 350 women. In the financial year 2023-24, they produced about 800 tonnes of six indigenous varieties of paddy that got them a turnover of about ₹2.2 crore. Each woman is a shareholder in the company that retails under the brand name Ecomust locally and under Aamon online. Baske and other women associated with Aamon feel their aspirations have taken wing. The farmer producer company has not only given economic freedom to the women farmers associated with it, but has also added to their confidence and social standing. Coming out of home A few hundred metres away from the field, Baske has cultivated black rice. “This crop is taller than you. Those who have not seen black rice ask how this crop looks. It is not black; it is just like any other variety of paddy,” she says. Not far from the paddy fields is Baske’s thatched home. Here, she has set up an elaborate vermicompost arrangement which she uses in the organic farming processes, to improve soil health and crop yields. “I had bought 500 earthworms for ₹1 a piece to start,” she says. Under the Central government’s Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), farmers get assistance to construct pits to produce organic manure through vermicomposting. “ This traditional method of cultivation is what we followed for generations. It is only in the past few decades that we have been using chemicals which are entering the food chain,” she says. The idea of Aamon came through self-help groups (SHG) of women who were promoting organic farming in the region. Once a hotbed of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) that led to the area being violence-ridden, coming out of home for community work was a challenge. In the financial year of 2023-24, the women farmers of Aamon produced about 800 tonnes of six indigenous varieties of paddy that got them a turnover of about ₹3 crore. | Photo Credit: Aamon “ I was the first to come out of my village and be associated with Jaiba Dal (an SHG promoting organic crops) and later Aamon,” Baske says. She speaks about how difficult it was for women to go out. “Often people would ask my family members, including my husband, why I was out for such long hours, what kind of work I did, and why I was out so late. This would result in fights at home,” she says. Building connections About 50 km from Baske’s house is Kharikamathani, a town in the heart of Nayagram block. On a Sunday afternoon, she and about 10 other women arrive at the office of PRADAN (Professional Assistance for Development Action), a non-government organisation that helps organise collectives. The office of the NGO is located above a motor garage and has meeting rooms. On one of the walls there are photographs of women farmers, honoured for best practices by the NGO. One such photograph is of Swarnaphabha Mahato, a farmer in her 20s, planting paddy seedlings in a muddy field. “This is me a few years ago,” Mahato says, smiling at the photograph. She says cultivating indigenous varieties of rice is not enough. Along with other women in cultivation, she has been attending several village fairs and festivals familiarising people with indigenous varieties of rice. “We used to cook rice and make payesh (rice pudding) and urge people to taste it just to promote these varieties,” says Mahato. Though most of the organic rice they cultivate is exported and sold in cities, the women feel it is important to find a local market for their produce. The women usually wear these at governing body and executive body meetings. They sit in a circle on the floor of one of the rooms where they hold the meeting to take stock of the yearly and seasonal production of paddy. Some farmers have a dual role of purchase officers, and keep a record of how much paddy is produced. Prabhati Das, 47, one of the women at the meeting, says that the challenge has not been so much about farming, but about convincing the men that women could cultivate on their own using the seeds and the method they wanted. “They (the men) used to crack jokes and discourage us. ‘What do the women know; they will not be able to do anything.’ We were repeatedly told this,” Das says. Das talks about how her husband gave her only three cottahs of land (about 720 square feet). “It was in 2016 when I first cultivated on this land. My husband told me that if it did not work, I would have to go back to my parents’ house,” she says. It worked. In the last financial year 2023-2024, her village, Nagripada, cultivated organic paddy on 77 acres of land. “There are 118 women farmers here who are growing organic paddy,” she says. Freedom from control Rekha Sinh, 42, a farmer who has been instrumental in getting 102 women farmers at her village Biriberia to join Aamon , says organic farming has been about breaking barriers. “Our husbands did not believe that we could achieve something. When we rode bicycles to hold meetings in and around villages, neighbours would pass comments,” she says. Now, many women hold driving licenses for cars. Sinh tells a story which the farmers often repeat to convince other women to join them and take up organic farming. In a village, a person has three sons: one sells seeds, another lab-made fertilisers and pesticides, the third is a doctor. The people go to the same family for everything, because after eating the harmful chemicals they visit a doctor. The women explain that by cultivating organic varieties they have been able to come out of the clutches of traders who sell both seeds and fertilisers. “Once you start buying from these local traders, often the same shops give you seeds on credit and then fertilisers on credit, but when the crops are harvested the farmers have to sell it to the trader,” Sinh says. For farmers of Aamon, 80% of their produce is bought by the company. There are various varieties of paddy which the women cultivate, such as Kerala Sundari, Shatia, Mallifullo, black and brown rice. They preserve seeds of these indigenous varieties from their annual harvest and use them every year, controlling seed quality. “ If a farmer has to spend ₹7,000 to cultivate one bigha of commercial paddy, we can do it for only ₹700, because we do not have to buy anything,” Das says. This, despite the fact that the soil is not free of the fertilizers and pesticides used for many years before, and the neighbouring fields may be using these that then seep into their produce, besides contaminating the ground water. Breaking boundaries The movement around organic farming has given the women more than economic freedom. “ We have been able to break the barriers of patriarchy and are recognised and respected for our work. It is not that we are doing something new, but our labour was never appreciated until we started our own enterprise,” Sinh says. Studies have shown that the female participation of women in agriculture in West Bengal is higher than men. In West Bengal, 57.12% of women are involved in agriculture, compared to 50.02% of men, says an essay in the INSEE Journal of the Indian Society for Ecological Economics. One of the reasons is men’s migration to other States. Among the dozen women at the PRADAN office, none of them have ownership of the land they cultivate. That is usually in the name of fathers, husbands, and sons. Despite that, the women of Aamon speak eagerly about the joy of riding a bicycle, participating in rural fairs, and travelling to Kolkata and Delhi to speak about their successes. Some like Krishna Bhunia, from Chandrasekharpur village, are happy they could get their daughters married after they turned adult, and not as children, for want of resources. They also operate a rice mill at Murakati village in Nayagram block, with a large nameplate and the words, Aamon Mahila Samiti in bold Bengali letters. Sacks of rice husk are stacked outside the mill. Inside, there is some husked black rice, which Baske eagerly picks up to show. The farmers sing a song while opening the rice mill or attending the general body meetings of Aamon. The lyrics go: “ Keetnasake desh bhasalo; Ebar jaiba saare kore chaasi dhan go; Akaler bachao poran (The country is laced with pesticides; O farmer, now cultivate paddy using organic fertiliser; Let us save lives).” A home of her own Sourangshu Banerjee, the team coordinator of PRADAN, says there are many farmer producer companies, but Aamon is unique because it is run by women and it promotes organic farming. PRADAN, which is aimed at eliminating rural poverty, was working with the conventional practices of agriculture until experts like Banerjee realised that fertilisers were not giving the desired results. They convinced the women farmers to shift to organic farming. “Aamon is now diversifying into cash crops like mustard and turmeric,” he says. Nayagram is located in the south-western part of West Bengal that is arid. The West Bengal government had initiated Usharmukti, a water management programme to rejuvenate severn major rivers, across 54 blocks in the State’s deprived Jangalmahal region. Though the initiative has suffered because the 100-day Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme has come to a halt in West Bengal since December 2021, efforts are on to implement Usharmukti through other government programmes. Another challenge for farmers in Nayagram is the herds of wild elephants that often destroy their crops. The fragmented forests of Jangalmahal have, over the past few years, become home to 180 to 200 elephants. It has emerged as one of the hotspots of human-elephant conflict.
