“India mourns loss of one of its most distinguished leaders”: PM Modi condoles Manmohan Singh’s demiseCHICAGO (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks placed running back Kenneth Walker III on injured reserve prior to their game against the Chicago Bears on Thursday because of an ankle injury. Walker hurt his ankle in last week's loss to Minnesota and left that game after sitting out the previous two because of a calf problem. He also missed two weeks in September with an oblique issue. Walker has run for 573 yards and seven touchdowns on 153 carries. A second-round draft pick by Seattle in 2022, he has 2,528 yards rushing and 24 TDs in his career. Walker could, in theory, return if the Seahawks win two playoff games, though their postseason hopes were slim entering the game against Chicago. Seattle (8-7) trailed the NFC West-leading Los Angeles Rams (9-6) by one game with two to play. The Seahawks' best path to the postseason was to win the final two regular-season games and have Los Angeles lose to Arizona on Saturday. Seattle visits the Rams to close the regular season. With Walker out, Seattle signed rookie running back George Holani off the practice squad. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL
HOUSTON — The Houston area is under a Tornado WATCH until 7 p.m. Below is information from Chief Meteorologist David Paul about what to do in the event of a tornado. ___________________________ In Houston, tornadoes can happen at any time of day, during any season, month or day of the year. Although the statistics show that they are more likely in late fall, winter and spring, there really is no "off season" for severe weather and tornadoes in Houston. Staying weather alert in Houston is a full time job for all of us. This starts with knowing what the weather forecast is so you and your family don't get caught off guard. Sign up for notifications on your phone. An old school NOAA weather radio is a great way to always have the latest updates too. Make sure your family knows where to go to take shelter from an approaching storm, and where you'll meet up afterwards. If a tornado threatens your home, school or business, the best place to take cover is on the first floor, in an interior hallway or closet, away from windows if possible. This will put as much frame and structure of the building in-between you and the storm as possible. In a high rise apartment or condo the same principals apply. Move to the first floor of the building if possible. Move into an interior hallway or stairwell. Take pillows, blankets, even a bike or motorcycle helmet if you have one are all great ways to protect from flying debris. Practice you plan! Take a moment with you family to go over where you'll go to protect yourself and where you'll meet up after the storm if separated. Remember, cell phone service may be impacted and unavailable in the aftermath. Think of tornado awareness and preparedness as a two-pronged attack. The meteorologists at KHOU 11 News will give you the information you need to stay weather smart, so you can take action to keep you and your loved ones safe. NoneNIE Networks have warned it may take days for power to be restored to all customers across the region. More than 20,000 customers remain without power across Northern Ireland following Storm Darragh. NIE Networks have warned it may take days for power to be restored to all customers in the region following damage caused by gusts of up to 70mph. At the peak, some 48,000 were without power. NIE Networks said by 9pm on Saturday, about 22,000 remained without power. A spokesperson said it is anticipated that a small number will have power restored overnight. “At this stage, NIE Networks estimate that it may be a number of days before they can reconnect all those customers impacted,” they said. Trains and some bus services and flights were cancelled across Saturday as the storm battered Northern Ireland. A bus was involved in a road crash in Co Antrim in the early hours of Saturday while Stena Line ferry services from Belfast to Cairnryan in Scotland were cancelled. A ferry remained off the coast of Co Antrim on Saturday, believed to have been sheltering from the weather conditions. A major power station reported damage to a chimney from the storm, adding it had halted electricity generation temporarily while the damage was assessed and addressed. EP Ballylumford station manager Tim McCullough said: “We are fully committed to ensuring the safe restoration of operations. “The safety of our staff and the integrity of our equipment are our top priorities, and we are working closely with all necessary parties to minimise any disruption to electricity supply.” The Department for Infrastructure said multi-agency partners have been meeting in response to the Met Office’s amber weather warning for wind which remained in place until 9pm. In a statement, the Stormont department urged people to make only essential travel because road conditions were challenging. They said disruption to bus and train services as well as some flights was continuing and the Strangford ferry has been suspended until further notice. “Translink have taken steps to mitigate against the effects of Storm Darragh. Additional buses are on standby. Additional support and teams are also on standby, including chainsaw crews, to assist with any fallen debris blocking the railway,” a department spokesman said. “If roads are blocked, it may be necessary to divert Ulsterbus or Goldliner services. “Safety is Translink’s number one priority. All passengers should check the Translink Journey Planner or social media channels in advance of travel and to allow extra time for their journeys. “Department for Infrastructure staff have been working through the night to respond to approximately 900 incidents which are mainly debris on the roads, fallen trees and branches and flooding.” A Translink spokesperson said a driver on the bus involved in the collision in Co Antrim had been the only person on board at the time and was taken to hospital for treatment. “We can confirm that the driver has since been discharged from hospital,” they said. “Our immediate priority is the welfare of our colleague, and we are providing support to them and their family. An internal investigation is under way, and we are working closely with the relevant authorities to establish the circumstances of the incident.” A number of roads, including Castle Street in Belfast city centre, were closed on Saturday morning while clean-up work was carried out. Some events in Northern Ireland, including three Irish League football clashes and a planned vigil in Belfast for the women of Afghanistan have been called off, while the Apprentice Boys of Derry shutting of the gates event in Londonderry was set to go ahead. The Belfast Christmas Market was not expected to open, with organisers saying they need to ensure visitors and traders are kept safe. In the Republic of Ireland, almost 400,000 customers are without power. A spokesperson for NIE Networks said community assistance centres will be opened across Northern Ireland on Sunday to offer assistance to those still without power. A number of leisure centres in Craigavon, Lisburn, Newtownards, Ballymena, Cookstown, Kilkeel and Fermanagh will be open from 2-4pm on Sunday. Edel Creery, NIE Networks Customer and Market Services Director, said: “With the amber weather warning in place until 9pm tonight (Saturday) outages have continued to be reported throughout the day. “Due to the widespread damage we anticipate it could be a number of days before power is successfully restored to all customers impacted. We would ask customers to bear with us as our teams work to restore power. “Additionally, we would ask members of the public to check in on relatives, friends and neighbours who may require further support and also ensure that their power cut has been reported.” NIE Networks is also reminding the public to stay clear of any damaged electricity equipment, keep children and animals away and to report any incidents of damage immediately to the NIE Networks Customer Helpline on 03457 643 643.
Sirikanya Tansakul, deputy leader of the People's Party (PP), criticised the government on social media for failing to clarify its position regarding reports of a proposed value-added tax ( VAT ) hike. On Saturday she was responding to Suksit Srijomkwan, the prime minister's deputy secretary-general for political affairs, who defended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra amid growing speculation about the VAT increase. Mr Suksit claimed the prime minister was working to dispel misunderstandings about the issue and accused Ms Sirikanya, whose party advocates for a welfare state, of obstructing tax reform. Ms Sirikanya countered in a post on X, saying she had appeared in multiple forums over the past week to discuss the VAT issue. Despite this, she was accused of hindering reforms. She acknowledged that VAT, a significant source of government revenue set at 7% since 1999 despite a legal ceiling of 10%, might require an increase. However, she argued any hike should be gradual, capped below 15%, and accompanied by measures to mitigate economic impacts. Prime Minister Paetongtarn, she said, failed to adequately address the issue when questioned by the media on Thursday. Instead, the prime minister posted on X the following day, asserting there were no plans to raise VAT to 15%. Earlier, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira faced backlash after proposing at a forum to increase VAT to 15% while simultaneously reducing corporate and personal income taxes to enhance state revenues, improve competitiveness, and reduce economic disparities. Ms Paetongtarn later dismissed the proposal, saying no such VAT adjustment was under consideration. Ms Sirikanya criticised the government's poor communication, warning that it undermines efforts to reform the tax structure. Separately, Charnnarong Buristrakul, chairman of the Khon Kaen Chamber of Commerce, said the government might consider raising VAT to address urgent issues such as flood rehabilitation. However, he cautioned that any increase should be limited to 10% due to the economy's vulnerability. Sirikanya Tansakul

Mortgage rates ended 2024 with a bang – but not the kind that’s good for borrowers. And for anyone in the market for a home – or a refinance – 2025 may not be much kinder. In the week ending Dec. 26, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.85%, mortgage guarantor Freddie Mac said Thursday . The popular loan product averaged 6.72% throughout the year, compared to 6.81% throughout 2023, even as the Federal Reserve cut its benchmark interest rate three times in 2024. It’s not surprising that mortgage rates haven’t followed bank interest rates downward. As USA TODAY has previously reported, rates for home loans take their cue from the bond market , which the Fed does not directly influence. The bigger question is what will happen in 2025. As analysts and housing market watchers have noted repeatedly, multiple factors may keep inflation simmering in the coming months. Buy that dream house: See the best mortgage lenders The fiscal policies promised by President-elect Donald Trump are the big one. Bright MLS Chief Economist Lisa Sturtevant had this to say after the November election : “Bond yields are rising because investors expect Trump’s proposed fiscal policies to widen the federal deficit and reverse progress on inflation.” More: Lock in a mortgage rate after the Fed cuts? This might be your last chance On Dec. 19, the day after t he Fed delivered its final interest rate cut of 2024 , Apollo Global Management’s Torsten Slok wrote in a note to clients, “The strong economy, combined with the potential for lower taxes, higher tariffs, and restrictions on immigration, has increased the risk that the Fed will have to hike rates in 2025. We see a 40% probability that the Fed will raise interest rates in 2025.” That could mean a repeat of 2022, Slok added: inflation that’s too high, rising interest rates, falling stock prices. In the housing market, 2022 wasn’t an awful year. Some 503,000 previously-owned homes were sold that year, versus 409,000 in 2023, and likely about that many this year. One big difference is the price of homes. Throughout 2022, the median price of homes sold was $392,800, while the median sale price in November 2024, the most recent data available, was $406,000. Will prices have to dip slightly to get back to a stronger pace of sales, particularly if rates remain elevated? Analysts say no, unfortunately. “Elevated mortgage rates will cause many homeowners to hang onto their homes − and the low rates they have locked in,” wrote Redfin Senior Economist Sheharyar Bokhari in a recent analysis. “That means there will be enough buyers competing over a relatively low number of homes to keep prices ticking up consistently.”Manmohan Singh, the former Indian prime minister whose economic reforms made his country a global powerhouse, died at 92 and current leader Narendra Modi said Thursday. India “mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders,” Modi posted on social media platform X shortly after news broke of Singh’s passing. “As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives.” Singh was taken to a hospital in New Delhi after he lost consciousness at his home on Thursday, but could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at 9:51 pm local time, according to a statement by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Singh, who held office from 2004 to 2014, is credited with having overseen an economic boom in Asia’s fourth-largest economy in his first term, although slowing growth in later years marred his second stint. “I have lost a mentor and guide,” opposition Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in a statement, adding that Singh had “led India with immense wisdom and integrity.” “Millions of us who admired him will remember him with the utmost pride,” said Gandhi, a scion of India’s powerful Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and the most prominent challenger to Modi. Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of the opposition in parliament’s upper house, said, “India has lost a visionary statesman, a leader of unimpeachable integrity, and an economist of unparalleled stature.” President Droupadi Murmu wrote on X that Singh will “always be remembered for his service to the nation, his unblemished political life and his utmost humility.” – ‘Mr Clean’ – Born in 1932 in the mud-house village of Gah in what is now Pakistan, Singh studied economics to find a way to eradicate poverty in India and never held elected office before taking the vast nation’s top job. Singh worked in a string of senior civil posts, served as a central bank governor, and also held various jobs with global agencies, including the United Nations. He was tapped in 1991 by then Congress prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao to reel India back from the worst financial crisis in its modern history. In his first term, Singh steered the economy through a period of nine-percent growth, lending India the international clout it had long sought. He also sealed a landmark nuclear deal with the United States that he said would help India meet its growing energy needs. Known as “Mr Clean,” Singh nonetheless saw his image tarnished during his decade-long tenure when a series of corruption cases became public. Several months before the 2014 elections, Singh said he would retire after the polls, with Sonia Gandhi’s son Rahul earmarked to take his place if Congress won. But Congress crashed to its worst-ever result at that time as the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Modi, won in a landslide. Singh — who said historians would be kinder to him than contemporary detractors — became a vocal critic of Modi’s economic policies, and more recently warned about the risks that rising communal tensions posed to India’s democracy.
