MANILA: Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte said on Saturday she would have President Ferdinand Marcos Jr assassinated if she herself were killed, prompting Marcos' office to vow "immediate proper action". In a dramatic sign of a widening rift between the two most powerful political families in the Southeast Asian nation, Duterte told an early morning press conference that she had spoken to an assassin and instructed him to kill Marcos, his wife and the speaker of the Philippine House if she were to be killed. "I have talked to a person. I said, if I get killed, go kill BBM (Marcos), (first lady) Liza Araneta, and (Speaker) Martin Romualdez. No joke. No joke," Duterte said in the profanity-laden briefing. "I said, do not stop until you kill them and then he said yes," she said. She was responding to an online commenter urging her to stay safe, saying she was in enemy territory as she was at the lower chamber of Congress overnight with her chief of staff. Duterte did not cite any alleged threat against herself. The Presidential Communications Office responded with a statement saying: "Acting on the Vice President's clear and unequivocal statement that she had contracted an assassin to kill the president if an alleged plot against her succeeds, the Executive Secretary has referred this active threat to the Presidential Security Command for immediate proper action. "Any threat to the life of the president must always be taken seriously, more so that this threat has been publicly revealed in clear and certain terms," it said. Duterte's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the presidential office's statement. "This country is going to hell because we are led by a person who doesn't know how to be a president and who is a liar," she said in the briefing. Duterte, the daughter of Marcos' predecessor, resigned from the cabinet in June while remaining vice president, signalling the collapse of a formidable political alliance that helped her and Marcos, son and namesake of the late authoritarian leader, secure their 2022 electoral victories by wide margins. Duterte's outburst is the latest in a series of startling signs of the feud at the top of Philippine politics. In October, she accused Marcos of incompetence and said she had imagined cutting the president's head off. The two families are at odds over foreign policy and former president Rodrigo Duterte's deadly war on drugs, among others. Past political violence in the Philippines has included the assassination of Benigno Aquino, a senator who staunchly opposed the rule the elder Marcos, as he exited his plane upon arrival home from political exile in 1983.WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday named Pam Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida, to be U.S. attorney general just hours after his other choice, Matt Gaetz, withdrew his name. Bondi is a longtime Trump ally and was one of his lawyers during his first impeachment trial when he was accused — but not convicted — of abusing his power as he tried to condition U.S. military assistance to Ukraine on that country investigating then-former Vice President Joe Biden. She has been a chair at the America First Policy Institute, a think tank set up by former Trump administration staffers. Bondi is from Tampa and spent more than 18 years as a prosecutor. She was Florida's first female attorney general. Gaetz withdrew Thursday amid continued fallout over a federal sex trafficking investigation that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation's chief federal law enforcement officer. The announcement capped a turbulent eight-day period in which Trump sought to capitalize on his decisive election win to force Senate Republicans to accept provocative selections like Gaetz, who had been investigated by the Justice Department before being tapped last week to lead it. The decision could heighten scrutiny on other controversial Trump nominees, including Pentagon pick Pete Hegseth, who faces sexual assault allegations that he denies. "While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition," Gaetz, a Florida Republican who one day earlier met with senators in an effort to win their support, said in a statement. "There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I'll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump's DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1," he added. Hours later, Gaetz posted on social media that he looks "forward to continuing the fight to save our country," adding, "Just maybe from a different post." Trump, in a social media post, said: "I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect. Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!" He did not immediately announce a new selection. Last week, he named personal lawyers Todd Blanche, Emil Bove and D. John Sauer to senior roles in the department. Another possible contender, Matt Whitaker, was announced Wednesday as the U.S. ambassador to NATO. The withdrawal, just a week after the pick was announced, averts what was shaping up to be a pitched confirmation fight that would have tested how far Senate Republicans were willing to go to support Trump's Cabinet picks. The selection of the fierce Trump ally over well-regarded veteran lawyers whose names had circulated as possible contenders stirred concern for the Justice Department's independence at a time when Trump has openly threatened to seek retribution against political adversaries. It underscored the premium Trump places on personal loyalty and reflected the president-elect's desire to have a disruptor lead a Justice Department that for years investigated and ultimately indicted him. In the Senate, deeply skeptical lawmakers sought more information about Justice Department and congressional investigations into sex trafficking allegations involving underage girls, which Gaetz has denied. Meanwhile, Justice Department lawyers were taken aback by the pick of a partisan lawmaker with limited legal experience who has echoed Trump's claims of a weaponized criminal justice system. As Gaetz sought to lock down Senate support, concern over the sex trafficking allegations showed no signs of abating. In recent days, an attorney for two women said his clients told House Ethics Committee investigators that Gaetz paid them for sex on multiple occasions beginning in 2017, when Gaetz was a Florida congressman. One of the women testified she saw Gaetz having sex with a 17-year-old at a party in Florida in 2017, according to the attorney, Joel Leppard. Leppard has said that his client testified she didn't think Gaetz knew the girl was underage, stopped their relationship when he found out and did not resume it until after she turned 18. The age of consent in Florida is 18. "They're grateful for the opportunity to move forward with their lives," Leppard said Thursday of his clients. "They're hoping that this brings final closure for all the parties involved." Gaetz has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. The Justice Department's investigation ended last year with no charges against him. Gaetz's political future is uncertain. He had abruptly resigned his congressional seat upon being selected as attorney general, a move seen as a way to shut down the ethics investigation into sexual misconduct allegations. He did win reelection in November for the new Congress, which convenes Jan. 3, 2025, but he said in his resignation letter last week to House Speaker Mike Johnson that he did not intend to take the oath of office. He transmitted a similar letter to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as the state launched a special election process to fill the vacancy. Republicans on the House Ethics Committee declined this week to release the panel's findings, over objections from Democrats in a split vote. But the committee did agree to finish its work and is scheduled to meet again Dec. 5 to discuss the matter. As word of Gaetz's decision spread across the Capitol, Republican senators seemed divided. Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin, who served with Gaetz in the House, called it a "positive move." Maine Sen. Susan Collins said Gaetz "put country first and I am pleased with his decision." Others said they had hoped Gaetz could have overhauled the department. Florida Sen. Rick Scott, a close ally of Trump, said he was "disappointed. I like Matt and I think he would have changed the way DOJ is run." Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said he hoped that Trump will pick someone "equally as tenacious and equally as committed to rooting out and eliminating bias and politicization at the DOJ." Gaetz is not the only Trump pick facing congressional scrutiny over past allegations. A detailed investigative police report made public Wednesday shows that a woman told police that she was sexually assaulted in 2017 by Hegseth, the former Fox News host now tapped to lead the Pentagon, after he took her phone, blocked the door to a California hotel room and refused to let her leave. "The matter was fully investigated and I was completely cleared," Hegseth told reporters Thursday at the Capitol, where he was meeting with senators to build support for his nomination.

(Reuters) – Cloud-based streaming platform Brightcove said on Monday Bending Spoons will buy the company in a transaction valued at about $233 million, adding to a string of deals by the Italian tech firm as it looks to bolster its app portfolio. The all-cash, take-private deal values each share of the Boston, Massachusetts-based company at $4.45, representing a premium of close to 40% to the stock’s last closing price. Bending Spoons, which owns services such as note-taking tool Evernote and photo editor Remini, has been pressing ahead with acquisitions throughout the year. The Italian app developer bought file-sharing platform WeTransfer and digital publishing platform Issuu in July. Bending Spoons is also seen as a potential candidate for a public listing, owing to its multiple buyouts, Reuters reported last month. Brightcove, which allows media companies and enterprises to monetize content through streaming, said the deal would enable it to leverage the technology and market expertise of Bending Spoons. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2025. Yin had a two-shot lead walking to the 17th tee only to wind up settling for the $1 million check as runner-up after closing with a 66. The win and the massive check came down to the 18th hole, Thitikul and Yin tied at 21-under par after the Thai’s key eagle. Yin hit her approach to 15 feet and narrowly missed her birdie try, leaving Thitikul to make her winner. It was the second straight day Thitikul finished eagle-birdie. Lydia Ko closed with a 63 to finish third. Nelly Korda, who ends her season with seven wins, had a 66 and tied for fifth. PGA Tour ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Maverick McNealy finally became a winner on the final tournament of his fifth year on the PGA Tour, hitting 6-iron to 5 feet for birdie on the 18th hole at Sea Island for a 2-under 68 and a one-shot victory in the RSM Classic. The victory came in his 134th start as a pro, and it sends him to Maui to start the year at The Sentry and to the Masters in April for the first time. Daniel Berger missed a 20-foot birdie attempt on the 18th that preceded McNealy’s winner. He tied for second with Nico Echavarria and Florida State sophomore Luke Clanton, both of whom missed par putts from inside 8 feet on the final hole that created the four-way tie. Berger got a small consolation prize, moving inside the top 125 to keep a full PGA Tour card for 2025 when the fields will be smaller and only the top 100 will keep cards. Henrik Norlander also moved into the top 125, while Joel Dahmen shot 64 to help him stay at No. 124. European tour and PGA Tour of Australia BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Elvis Smylie closed with a 4-under 67 to win the Australian PGA Championship on Sunday by two shots over former mentor Cameron Smith. Smith, who fell behind with a bogey on the par-5 ninth hole, shot 69. It was the second straight week Smith had at least a share of the lead going into the final round and failed to win. A Hull rugby club is offering children the chance to play the sport and make new friends with free Saturday morning sessions. Bransholme Bears has starters as young as three attending training, come rain or shine, at Lambwath Playing Fields, Biggin Avenue. The coaching is all voluntary and can be geared to individuals’ needs. A spokesperson for Bransholme Bears said: “The League started Bransholme Bears a couple of years ago but it didn’t take off because they couldn’t get enough volunteers. It was relaunched this summer and we’ve got Karl Beardshaw, the Scotland under-16s coach, involved.” Also among the volunteer coaches are John Baines, who works in security at the local shopping centre – “he’s been really good in organising his shifts so they don’t clash with a Saturday morning” – and local vicar Andrew Silley. The club has Hull FC legend Danny Houghton, who grew up on Bransholme and started with Bransholme Bulldogs, as honorary chairman and Hull KR ’s Dean Hadley as an ambassador. The spokesperson said: “It helps with kids’ social skills and those who have been coming have really become friends with each other. Even last Saturday, when we had all that rain (with Storm Bert’s arrival) we still had about 30 kids down, they were so keen. “We’ve got about 40 to 50 kids, girls and boys, but we have the capacity for more to come along. We have a mini-Bears session for the young ones, it gives them something to do and, as they get older, they get a bit more out of the specific rugby skills, but it’s more about fun really. “I’m from Bransholme and when my two boys wanted to play, there wasn’t anywhere for them to go - there used to be four teams. We know there are children on the Bransholme estate with the potential but they don’t have the opportunities; we want to give them that opportunity. “We have had support from the League with getting equipment and so on, and I’ve met with Karl Turner MP who is hoping to speak to a few people. The council has been really supportive as well. It’s just a pitch to be sorted now.” Keep up to date with all the latest breaking news and top stories from Hull with our free newsletter He added: “The Sutton Arms pub has donated a lot of selection boxes to give out to the kids at our Christmas party. We would be pleased to hear from anyone who can help the Bransholme Bears with sponsorship or anything.” One local mum spoke about the “amazing work” of the club. She said: “They deserve a bit of recognition; all of the coaches do this out of the kindness of their own hearts, the money comes out of their pockets and they don’t charge anyone to join. “My boys have flourished being part of this team. They both have autism and ADHD but that didn’t matter to the club; they welcomed them with open arms. “They are creating stability for kids who might not have any otherwise. I think that’s amazing.” Bransholme Bears offers free training on Saturdays from 9.30am to 10.30am at Lambwath Playing Fields, Biggin Avenue, HU7 4WN, with all skills/abilities welcome and no upper age limit.
