CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Known across the globe as the stuck astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams hit the six-month mark in space Thursday with two more to go. The pair rocketed into orbit on June 5 , the first to ride Boeing's new Starliner crew capsule on what was supposed to be a weeklong test flight. They arrived at the International Space Station the next day, only after overcoming a cascade of thruster failures and helium leaks . NASA deemed the capsule too risky for a return flight, so it will be February before their long and trying mission comes to a close. While NASA managers bristle at calling them stuck or stranded, the two retired Navy captains shrug off the description of their plight. They insist they're fine and accepting of their fate. "I like everything about being up here," Williams told students Wednesday from an elementary school named for her in Needham, Massachusetts, her hometown. "Just living in space is super fun." Both astronauts lived up there before, so they quickly became full-fledged members of the crew, helping with science experiments and chores like fixing a broken toilet, vacuuming the air vents and watering the plants. Williams took over as station commander in September. "Mindset does go a long way," Wilmore said in response to a question from Nashville first graders in October. He's from Mount Juliet, Tennessee. "I don't look at these situations in life as being downers." "When the crews go up, they know they could be there for up to a year," NASA Associate Administrator Jim Free said. Boeing said this week that input from Wilmore and Williams was "invaluable" in the ongoing inquiry of what went wrong. The company said it is preparing for Starliner's next flight but declined to comment on when it might launch again. NASA also has high praise for the pair. "Whether it was luck or whether it was selection, they were great folks to have for this mission," NASA's chief health and medical officer, Dr. JD Polk, said during an interview with The Associated Press. Braiden Koran, a former Dynamiter born and raised in Kimberley, has been excelling on and off the ice, most recently being recognized for the second time with the USPORTS All-Academic Canadian, OUA Academic Achievment Award and Ontario Tech Varsity Athletics Academic Award. After playing minor hockey in Kimberley, Cranbrook and the U18 AA East Kootenay Avalanche program, Koran joined the ranks of the Kimberley Dynamiters. In his second season with the team, from 2018 to 2019, the Dynamiters won 42 of their 48 games played. "Braiden developed immensely during his season with us," said Dynamiters head coach Derek Stuart. "He ended up becoming a big impact player for us as a rookie and helping us to the best regular season ever by a Dynamiter team. He was perhaps the hardest hitter in the league as a 17-year-old rookie and finished with almost a point per game." Koran had nine goals and 22 assists in 39 games played that season. In 2019 he was the recipient of the Jerry Bancks Award from the Selkirk Sports School hockey program, which is given to the student athlete that best embodies the statement, "living with purpose." He then played three years with the Humboldt Broncos. That stretch of his hockey career was impacted, like so many others, by the COVID pandemic. In a previous interview with The Bulletin Koran said while COVID was a low point for his hockey career, his time disconnected from the community and the ice turned into a learning experience, where he channelled his energy into training for the following season. His persistent work ethic he's developed over the years continues to serve him well with the Ontario Tech University Ridgebacks, who he signed to in 2022. Koran is currently studying criminology and justice and is on track to graduate next year. He said if his academic pursuits continue to go well and he continues enjoying it, he will pursue law school to become a lawyer. "That said, if I decide to pursue professional hockey after university, I’d likely fall back into policing later and work my way up to detective," Koran said in an interview with the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL). His schooling has been going exceptionally well so far. In addition to the aforementioned awards, Koran was also recently bestowed with the Bob and Sallie Baun Varsity Scholarship, a prestigious honour awarded to the eight varsity athletes with the highest grade point average. Koran also made the President's List for maintaining a GPA of at least 3.8 for two straight semesters, with an 80 per cent course load. He also received the Social Science and Humanities Oustanding Academic Achievement Award for 2023/24. "It's always nice to see alumni succeed in any aspect of life," Stuart said. "What I find most impressive with Braiden is he is succeeding at the most important part of his life and the hardest part of his life right now: in the classroom. He's worked hard and earned all the accolades he has received and our entire Dynamiter family is very proud of him." Koran said he learned to balance school and hockey while with the Dynamiters, as he was on the team while still in high school. "It was hard to learn that balance, so it’s helping me in university as I only did two university courses during my 18- and 19-year-old season in Humboldt," he said. "I didn’t take any during my 20-year-old season. It was a big adjustment to get back into school. " ... Stuart was great for me in my year that I was there and he helped develop me as a player and a person. The success we had as a team taught me what it takes to win. We’re translating that to our team this year in Ontario Tech. We’re third place in the division and we were nationally ranked for the first time in program history a couple weeks ago." Heading into his time in university, Koran said his goal was first and foremost to maintain his schooling, but said he's "a hockey player at heart." These mounting awards and scholarships very clearly illustrate he's been able to do both. "It’s really just a reflection of my hard work," he said. "I wasn’t necessarily the smartest guy in high school, but once I got to university, I realized that if I put my head down and worked hard, I could achieve great results.
