THUNDER BAY — Think of Wednesday’s Reverse Expo as speed dating for companies in the minerals sector. Four mining companies came to a local hotel ballroom and gave presentations to local companies that supply and service the sector. Following their presentations, the miners had business-to-business meetings with the service and supply businesses. One person hearing what the miners had to say was Denise Atkinson, a Red Rock Indian Band member who is chief executive officer of Tipi Horse Connects, which connects employers with Indigenous workers. “It’s been amazing,” Atkinson said of the Reverse Expo held by the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission and MineConnect. “There’s such a great cross section of different corporations, other entrepreneurs,” she said. “It’s great to have a seat at the table with all these amazing companies. “Mining companies are working on our traditional territories, so it’s really important for us as Indigenous entrepreneurs to get a chance at ... these opportunities in our area,” Atkinson said. The mining companies at the expo were First Mining Gold, Newmont Musselwhite (soon to be part of Orla Mining), West Red Lake Gold Mines and Green Technology Metals. First Mining is trying to start an open-pit mine at Springpole Lake in Northwestern Ontario. The Musselwhite gold mine recently acquired from Newmont by Orla Mining employs hundreds of people at a site north of Pickle Lake. West Red Lake told the expo it plans to restart the Madsen gold mine in the Red Lake district. Green Technology’s projects include the Seymour lithium project near Armstrong. The provincial government wants “to make sure that more local Northwestern Ontario businesses are involved” as mining grows in Northwestern Ontario, Kenora-Rainy River MPP and Northern Development Minister Greg Rickford told Newswatch at the expo. “And the reason I’m here with respect to that is, many of those businesses are currently supported through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund,” he added. “And so the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund is a partner with that business ... We want them to know that we’ve got their back and that they’ve got this.” Jamie Taylor, CEO of the Thunder Bay Economic Development Commission, said the city “is definitely a regional hub for mining supply and service. We have over 400 supply and service companies that are registered with us on our mining supply service list.” She said the expo “exemplifies (the commission’s) commitment to fostering partnerships and driving economic growth. “By connecting our local businesses directly with industry leaders, we’re unlocking opportunities that will strengthen our community and ensure a sustainable future.”Centre’s digitisation drive makes life easier for pensionersUber launches new rides to capitalize on Thanksgiving travel demand

's injury crisis meant manager Ange Postecoglou said he was forced to field against on Sunday despite the defender struggling with an ankle knock. Speaking after his side's in the , Postecoglou painted a grim picture of the club's plight with left-back the latest casualty. "Well we had no choice, if Radu doesn't play, I don't know who plays. He wasn't 100%, but he felt he could get through with his ankle," Postecoglou told reporters. Dragusin, who suffered an injury against on Thursday, is currently the only available centre-back at the club with , and all injured and still weeks away from a return. "There's no choice, but it's not a risk. I mean it's a judgment call. It's not like it's a muscle injury, it's a knock on his ankle, but yeah, we're making decisions," said Postecoglou, whose side are down in 11th place. "We've got no choice unless I throw another 18 or 17-year-old out there. That's the only fit players we have." Tottenham are also missing the likes of striker , winger and first-choice keeper and will be without midfielder for next weekend's home clash with after he picked up a fifth booking of the season to trigger a one-game ban. Udogie also went off in the 50th minute with a muscular injury, adding to Postecoglou's woes. "I think it was a hamstring. Again, we've been relying on a core group of players because we just haven't had the ability to rotate so at some point it was going to catch up with us. Unfortunately it caught up with Destiny," Postecoglou said. Tottenham have now won only once in their last seven Premier League games and will finish a year lower than seventh for the first time since the 2008-09 season. They conceded early against Wolves -- the 15th time this year they have fallen behind at home in a Premier League game. But goals by Rodrigo Bentancur and got them ahead by halftime, only for Norwegian substitute 's late effort to deny them a much-needed win. "It's a disappointing outcome. Obviously we went a goal down but after that I felt we controlled the game. It wasn't easy always to get openings but we did look pretty threatening every time we did get forward," Postecoglou said.

Scientists develop terrifying AI-powered death clock that predicts when you’ll die – are YOU brave enough to try it?The Dangers of Isolated Gameplay: A Faith-Based Approach to VR HeadsetsFormer President Jimmy Carter was remembered for his leadership and commitment to public service following his death. Carter died on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 100. RELATED STORY | Former President Jimmy Carter dies at age 100 President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden: Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian. Over six decades, we had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well. With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us. He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe. Donald and Melania Trump: I just heard of the news about the passing of President Jimmy Carter. Those of us who have been fortunate to have served as President understand this is a very exclusive club, and only we can relate to the enormous responsibility of leading the Greatest Nation in History. The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude. Melania and I are thinking warmly of the Carter Family and their loved ones during this difficult time. We urge everyone to keep them in their hearts and prayers. Bill and Hillary Clinton: Hillary and I mourn the passing of Jimmy Carter and give thanks for his long, good life. Guided by his faith, President Carter lived to serve others—until the very end. Statement from President Clinton and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of President Jimmy Carter pic.twitter.com/1Ejol6yjav — Angel Ureña (@angelurena) December 29, 2024 Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer: President Carter's faith in the American people and his belief in the power of kindness and humility leave a strong legacy. He taught us that the strength of a leader lies not in rhetoric but in action, not in personal gain but in service to others. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell: President Carter served during times of tension and uncertainty, both at home and abroad. But his calm spirit and deep faith seemed unshakeable. Jimmy Carter served as our commander-in-chief for four years, but he served as the beloved, unassuming Sunday school teacher at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia for forty. And his humble devotion leaves us little doubt which of those two important roles he prized the most. U.S. Sen. Jon Osoff (D-GA): Among his lifetime of service and countless accomplishments, President Carter will be remembered for his commitment to democracy and human rights, his enduring faith, his philanthropic leadership, and his deep love of family U.S. Sen. Rafael Warnock (D-GA): President Carter was one of my heroes. His leadership was driven by love, his life’s project grounded in compassion and a commitment to human dignity. For those of us who have the privilege of representing our communities in elected office, Jimmy Carter is a shining example of what it means to make your faith come alive through the noble work of public service. U.S. Sen. John Thun (R-SD): President Carter dedicated his life to serving the people of Georgia and our great country – as a naval officer, a governor, and as the 39th President of the United States. From peanut farming to the presidency and every step in between, his wife Rosalynn was by his side. House Speaker Mike Johnson Because of his work in brokering the Camp David Accords and his advocacy with Habitat for Humanity, the world is a more peaceful place, and more Americans have a place to call home. No one can deny that President Carter led an extraordinary life of service to his country. May he rest in peace.

If the Democratic Party wants to win future elections outside of deep blue areas, it might just need to take inspiration from Goodwill Industries and embrace its philosophy of “A hand up, not a handout.” Many election analysts attribute President-elect Donald Trump’s win to one or two major factors, such as the economy or immigration. And as time goes on, political scientists like me may learn more. But one takeaway that is not really being discussed is the role of work, aspiration and prosperity. Warning: I will be painting with a very broad brush here. Please proceed with the understanding that some people in our society require services, and this is by no means a suggestion that they not receive the assistance they need. Patrick Ruffini, a Republican pollster and author of “Party of the People: Inside the Multiracial Populist Coalition Remaking the GOP,” recently joined New York Times columnist Ezra Klein on Klein’s podcast for an episode titled “The Book That Predicted the 2024 Election.” Ruffini shared polling that he conducted with Hispanic voters living in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas. He asked them what is the No. 1 problem they see today with the Democratic Party. Ruffini told Klein that the answer they gave “wasn’t ‘too woke’ or the buzzword of socialism.” Rather, they perceived the Democratic Party as being “the party of welfare benefits for people who do not work.” “And if you look at how the Democratic Party has been perceived in the last four years, in particular in terms of letting immigrants into the country, illegal migrants into the country, and there’s a perception that they’re getting government benefits and not working,” Ruffini said. “And all of this is coming at the expense of people who made their way in America who started from the very bottom of the rung and worked their way up the economic ladder through their own hard work and not necessarily through government policies.” This advice, if heeded, could have helped Vice President Kamala Harris in her campaign. Harris’ economic policy agenda focused on cutting taxes for working families, going after businesses and corporations for price gouging, lowering health care costs, expanding the child tax credit and offering $25,000 for new homebuyers. While Harris’ plan may have put more money in working Americans’ pockets, the focus seemed to be on the government’s role in helping citizens rather than empowering them to achieve their own success. Consider it in light of Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu’s famous quote, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” A Harris administration would have doled out a lot of fish. Back in May, Trump held a large rally in the South Bronx, New York, one of the most Democratic counties in the nation, where he tried to reach out to Black and Hispanic voters. While Trump’s speech was littered with lies about the 2020 election and other ramblings, he spent a large portion of that rally talking about success, both for the country and for individual Americans. “Do you remember I used to give talks on success before politics?” Trump told the crowd. “It starts with getting the right leadership. It also involves men and women just like you. ... I think we’re in the Bronx, we have young people, people that aspire to success.” As we sift through the data of the election, it appears Trump was able to reach at least some of those voters. For example, he increased his vote share in the Bronx by 11 percentage points to nearly 30% on Nov. 5. Trump won the 2024 election by turning out his base of supporters, but he also expanded his coalition among other voters, including several groups that have traditionally been a part of the Democratic base. VoteCast conducted a sweeping survey of the American electorate, interviewing more than 120,000 voters nationwide from Oct. 28 to Nov. 5. Its results found that Trump picked up a small but significant share of Black and Hispanic voters and made narrow gains with men and women. Harris lost support from this portion of the electorate as compared with President Joe Biden’s coalition in 2020. Talking about success seems to have bred electoral success. For years now, Democrats have been wringing their hands over the loss of the working-class voter to Republicans. Instead of trying to “help” workers with aid and programs, Dems should acknowledge, praise and encourage Americans’ labor. Schmidt writes for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: SchmidtOpinions@gmail.com . NEW ORLEANS — Andrew Wiggins scored 30 points and the Golden State Warriors secured a knockout round spot in the NBA Cup with a 112-108 victory over the reeling New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night. Stephen Curry scored 19 for the Warriors, who improved to 3-0 in West Group C. Buddy Hield capped his 12-point performance with two free throws with 18.5 seconds left to help hold New Orleans at bay and ensure Golden State would advance out of group play as a wild card at least, if not the group winner. Trey Murphy III led New Orleans with 24 points but missed a 3-pointer for the lead with 5 seconds remaining — a shot made possible by Brandon Boston Jr's steal of a Golden State inbound pass. Golden State's Draymond Green was fouled as he grabbed the rebound of Murphy's miss and hit both free throws for the final margin. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl scored 19 points, Brandon Ingram added 18 and Boston 16 for the Pelicans, who fell to 1-2 in group play and lost for the 10th time in 11 games. The federal investigation agency (FIA) has registered an FIR against the scribe for allegedly making misleading propaganda against the state institutions. According to a video that has gone viral on social media, Harmeet, who is an anchor with a news channel in Islamabad, presently believed to be in a hiding, had been reporting and posting the events from X handle @HarmeetSinghPk during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party’s nationwide protests. The FIR, a copy of which is circulating on social media, reads that Harmeet had been allegedly making misleading propaganda and had unleashed a concocted and baseless campaign against state institutions and security agencies of Pakistan. “The contents promulgated through his tweets were inciting the general public of Pakistan towards the act of violence and terrorism from Nov 24 to 27,” read the FIR registered against Harmeet on Dec 6. Notably, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, led by former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently in jail, had organised the “final call” protest, also referred to as the “do-or-die” protest. The demonstration was led by Imran’s wife Bushra Bibi. During the protest, Imran Khan’s supporters had also clashed with the police in Islamabad as they were obstructed in their march to the capital city. “Harmeet was reporting on the events like any other journalist, but as a Sikh, a minority community member, he is being targeted. This incident has made us (Sikhs) feel alienated in our own country, which is unfortunate,” a prominent Sikh face from Nankana Sahib said on condition of anonymity. In a video message, which has also gone viral on the social media, Harmeet could be heard saying that the allegations outlined in the FIR against him had reached him only through his fellow journalists and no evidence had been provided so far. He also asked why the FIR was kept hidden all these days and why he was not informed of the registration of an FIR against him. The Sikh leader from Nankana Sahib informed that Harmeet would approach the court on Saturday seeking bail. The leader also appealed to the Sikh diasporas to keep an eye on the incident and use their influence on the Pakistan govt against any injustice meted out to Harmeet. New details on a triple stabbing that occurred on Sunday night in Monterey County, California. Deputies with the Monterey County Sheriff's Office responded to an area for reports of a stabbing. Deputies then located three people with stab wounds. Their injuries ranged from minor to critical. They were taken to a local hospital and are expected to survive. Deputies said that Devin Wolfgang Vandorhoef, 25, of Canada, became obsessed with a woman he played video games online with for years. He boarded a plane with Darius Avery Whyte, 25, of Canada, to Salinas, California. Vandorhoef did not tell the woman he played video games with online that he was in town with his friend. Vandorhoff then posed as a delivery man while carrying a package that contained handcuffs, knives and duct tape, per a deputy spokesperson. A deputy spokesperson is unsure how the suspect intended to use these items. When Vanderhoef knocked at the woman's door, her boyfriend answered the door. Vanderhoef then began stabbing the woman's boyfriend, who suffered critical injuries but is expected to survive. The woman then came to her boyfriend's defense and stabbed Vanderhoff with a sharp metal object, said the spokesperson. Vanderhoef then strangled and stabbed the woman, causing moderate injuries. Vandorhoef suffered various critical stab wounds during the struggle. Whyte was questioned at the scene but said he did not know what was going on and was allowed to leave. However, further investigation revealed he was a part of the scheme and was arrested Monday morning at a tarmac in San Jose as he was preparing to fly back to Canada. Vandorhoef and Whyte were both booked into Monterey County Jail. Vandorhoef was booked for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit a crime, mayhem, stalking and burglary. His bail was set at $4.15 million. Whyte was booked for conspiracy to commit a crime and attempted murder. His bail was set at $1 million.Jonah Goldberg Among elites across the ideological spectrum, there's one point of unifying agreement: Americans are bitterly divided. What if that's wrong? What if elites are the ones who are bitterly divided while most Americans are fairly unified? History rarely lines up perfectly with the calendar (the "sixties" didn't really start until the decade was almost over). But politically, the 21st century neatly began in 2000, when the election ended in a tie and the color coding of electoral maps became enshrined as a kind of permanent tribal color war of "red vs. blue." Elite understanding of politics has been stuck in this framework ever since. Politicians and voters have leaned into this alleged political reality, making it seem all the more real in the process. I loathe the phrase "perception is reality," but in politics it has the reifying power of self-fulfilling prophecy. Like rival noble families in medieval Europe, elites have been vying for power and dominance on the arrogant assumption that their subjects share their concern for who rules rather than what the rulers can deliver. Political cartoonists from across country draw up something special for the holiday In 2018, the group More in Common published a massive report on the "hidden tribes" of American politics. The wealthiest and whitest groups were "devoted conservatives" (6%) and "progressive activists" (8%). These tribes dominate the media, the parties and higher education, and they dictate the competing narratives of red vs. blue, particularly on cable news and social media. Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of Americans resided in, or were adjacent to, the "exhausted majority." These people, however, "have no narrative," as David Brooks wrote at the time. "They have no coherent philosophic worldview to organize their thinking and compel action." Lacking a narrative might seem like a very postmodern problem, but in a postmodern elite culture, postmodern problems are real problems. It's worth noting that red vs. blue America didn't emerge ex nihilo. The 1990s were a time when the economy and government seemed to be working, at home and abroad. As a result, elites leaned into the narcissism of small differences to gain political and cultural advantage. They remain obsessed with competing, often apocalyptic, narratives. That leaves out most Americans. The gladiatorial combatants of cable news, editorial pages and academia, and their superfan spectators, can afford these fights. Members of the exhausted majority are more interested in mere competence. I think that's the hidden unity elites are missing. This is why we keep throwing incumbent parties out of power: They get elected promising competence but get derailed -- or seduced -- by fan service to, or trolling of, the elites who dominate the national conversation. There's a difference between competence and expertise. One of the most profound political changes in recent years has been the separation of notions of credentialed expertise from real-world competence. This isn't a new theme in American life, but the pandemic and the lurch toward identity politics amplified distrust of experts in unprecedented ways. This is a particular problem for the left because it is far more invested in credentialism than the right. Indeed, some progressives are suddenly realizing they invested too much in the authority of experts and too little in the ability of experts to provide what people want from government, such as affordable housing, decent education and low crime. The New York Times' Ezra Klein says he's tired of defending the authority of government institutions. Rather, "I want them to work." One of the reasons progressives find Trump so offensive is his absolute inability to speak the language of expertise -- which is full of coded elite shibboleths. But Trump veritably shouts the language of competence. I don't mean he is actually competent at governing. But he is effectively blunt about calling leaders, experts and elites -- of both parties -- stupid, ineffective, weak and incompetent. He lost in 2020 because voters didn't believe he was actually good at governing. He won in 2024 because the exhausted majority concluded the Biden administration was bad at it. Nostalgia for the low-inflation pre-pandemic economy was enough to convince voters that Trumpian drama is the tolerable price to pay for a good economy. About 3 out of 4 Americans who experienced "severe hardship" because of inflation voted for Trump. The genius of Trump's most effective ad -- "Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you" -- was that it was simultaneously culture-war red meat and an argument that Harris was more concerned about boutique elite concerns than everyday ones. If Trump can actually deliver competent government, he could make the Republican Party the majority party for a generation. For myriad reasons, that's an if so big it's visible from space. But the opportunity is there -- and has been there all along. Goldberg is editor-in-chief of The Dispatch: thedispatch.com . May he rest in peace.Do carbon credits make a difference?

The family of late Australian Test cricketer Phillip Hughes has released a heartfelt statement on the 10th anniversary of their son and brother’s death. Hughes was batting for South Australia in the Sheffield Shield competition in November 2014 when he was struck on the neck and taken to hospital, where he died two days later. Scroll down to read the statement in full In a lengthy message issued by Cricket Australia on Wednesday, Hughes’s parents Greg and Virginia, siblings Jason and Megan and their respective families, said they hope his memory can continue to inspire young cricketers. “Phillip was a loving, humorous and an infectious person to be around,” the family said. “He always aimed to make those around him smile and enjoy the little things in life, where his beautiful smile would come to life. “He shined bright even in the tough times, which is a testament to who he was as a person, and we loved everything about him. “He was the light of our lives. Phillip had a profound love for his family and lived his life with respect to everyone around him.” The family hoped the story of Hughes’s journey in a documentary, The Boy From Macksville — premiering on Channel 7 and 7plus immediately after Day 1 of the Adelaide Test on December — would further honour his life. “We’d like to thank (everyone) for supporting this endeavour and each person who worked tirelessly behind the scenes for creating a celebration of Phillip’s life,” they added. “We hope we have been able to showcase that dreams really do come true and you will enjoy seeing his family, friends and teammates give more of an insight into his career from his baggy blue, baggy red, baggy green and many more moments in between, including unseen footage that can be watched for generations to come.” The documentary follows an official biography released in November 2015. “We hope between the biography and documentary, young cricketers around the world and everyone that was with Phillip along the way will see the hard working, dedicated, devoted and rare cricketer he was,” the family said. “His extraordinary talent is known by many, but his lasting impression of who he was as a person will always be remembered, which makes us extremely proud of him. “Phillip was always proud of the younger cricketing generation he met along the way and was always hoping he could be an inspiration, no matter where you were from, and that is also our hope.” They concluded by expressing the hole that still remains in their hearts. “It is essential for us to express our heartfelt thanks, sincere gratitude and appreciation to our extended family and friends, our hometown of Macksville and surrounding towns, to the wider cricketing community in Australia and overseas and the farming community,” the family said. “Phillip, we love you, we miss you and we are forever proud of you. We think about you every day and we are so thankful you were ours. Thank you for being the most extraordinary son and loving brother.” Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the passing of our treasured son and brother, Phillip Joel Hughes. Phillip was a loving, humorous and an infectious person to be around. He always aimed to make those around him smile and enjoy the little things in life, where his beautiful smile would come to life. He shined bright even in the tough times, which is a testament to who he was as a person, and we loved everything about him. He was the light of our lives. Phillip had a profound love for his family and lived his life with respect to everyone around him. Phillip, the small-town country boy, became an Australian Test, ODI and T20 cricketer, where he played on the toughest pitches around the globe, alongside the toughest of cricketers on the world stage, but never forgot where he came from and who helped along the way. He was a unique individual that took risky and adventurous strides to conquer the dreams he set for himself to become Test baggy green number 408. He played cricket for all the right reasons and had the ability to take it all in his stride. He loved being a part of a team and representing Australia for the game he loved so deeply. The number of stories, laughs shared, phone calls and conversations wouldn’t be able to be told over a quick drink at the local pub, which leads us to having the opportunity nine years ago to create the official biography of Phillip — ‘Phillip Hughes The Official Biography’ — that gave us the pleasure of sharing more about who Phillip was. Those pages consisted of his journey from his childhood to his final legacy of 63 NOT OUT*. Ten years on, a documentary, ‘The Boy from Macksville’, will be shared alongside Cricket Australia, who we’d like to thank for supporting this endeavour and each person who worked tirelessly behind the scenes for creating a celebration of Phillip’s life. We hope we have been able to showcase that dreams really do come true and you will enjoy seeing his family, friends and teammates give more of an insight into his career from his baggy blue, baggy red, baggy green and many more moments in between, including unseen footage that can be watched for generations to come. His extraordinary talent is known by many but his lasting impression of who he was as a person will always be remembered, which makes us extremely proud of him. Phillip was always proud of the younger cricketing generation he met along the way and was always hoping he could be an inspiration, no matter where you were from, and that is also our hope. Cricket gave Phillip the stepping stone to start a new adventure of Four O Eight Angus, named after his proud baggy green Test cap number. Black Stud Angus Cattle farming back in our hometown of Macksville, where he loved the land and his animals and would tell anyone who would listen.
