Republican North Carolina Rep. Virginia Foxx wrote to Department of Labor (DOL) Acting Secretary Julie Su Monday to ensure the agency continues to perform casework during the remainder of President Joe Biden’s lame duck term . During the 2016-2017 transition from former President Barack Obama to President-elect Donald Trump, the DOL slowed or ceased processing casework, creating a backlog of “hundreds of cases” and preventing everyday Americans from accessing needed assistance such as workers’ compensation, according to an oversight letter from the House Committee on Education and the Workforce obtained exclusively by the Daily Caller News Foundation. Now, Foxx is trying to prevent Biden’s DOL from engaging in similar obstructionist behavior, requesting the DOL provide weekly updates to the Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs from Dec. 6 until shortly before Inauguration Day. (RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: GOP Lawmakers Demand Answers From Biden-Harris Admin On ‘Botched’ Rollout Of Huge Jobs Revision) “It is the Committee’s understanding that, under the Obama administration, DOL either significantly slowed or quit processing casework in 2016-2017, leaving the incoming Trump administration with a backlog of hundreds of cases,” Foxx wrote. “These avoidable and unconscionable delays hampered the incoming administration and delayed redress for hundreds of Americans.” 11.25.24 DOL Casework Letter The letter argues the House Committee on Education and the Workforce retains the right to vet the status of DOL casework based on House Rule X , which stipulates the committee has the jurisdiction and responsibility to “review and study on a continuing basis ... the application, administration, execution and effectiveness of laws and programs addressing subjects within its jurisdiction.” Trump’s first presidency faced significant internal resistance from a variety of government bureaucrats, with Miles Taylor, then-chief of staff of the Department of Homeland Security, even going as far as publishing an anonymous New York Times op-ed vowing to “thwart part of [Trump’s] agenda and his worst inclinations.” Now, some members of Congress are attempting to avoid the strengthening of a second Trump resistance, with Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and other lawmakers writing a letter to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management to try and prevent Biden political appointees from being converted to civil service positions — a process sometimes referred to as “burrowing in.” “The Obama administration’s backlog of 2016-2017 must never be repeated,” Foxx’s letter states. “The outgoing Trump administration made a point not to follow the Obama administration’s example, instead continuing to process and finalize these cases in 2020-2021 until the transition was completed. I call on you to do the same.” All content created by the Daily Caller News Foundation, an independent and nonpartisan newswire service, is available without charge to any legitimate news publisher that can provide a large audience. European countries suspend Syrian asylum decisions after Assad's fallThirteen individuals, including two women, from the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), were sent to jail for organising an event that critiqued and allegedly tried to burn a copy of Manusmriti on the university campus. On December 25, the students conducted the event at the arts faculty intersection on the BHU campus to commemorate Dr BR Ambedkar’s historic burning of the Manusmriti on the same date in 1927. However, they were promptly stopped by the university security personnel leading to an altercation and eventual police detention. According to the police, the BHU security guards in their complaint alleged that the students attacked them, vandalised properties and obstructed official duties. On the other hand, eyewitness accounts state that it was the security guards who misbehaved with the students, dragged and manhandled them; injuring many. The students were later detained in the university’s proctorial board office, Maktoob Media reported. Police imposed serious charges, including non-bailable section 132 (assault on a government servant) , 121(2) (causing grievous hurt to a government servant) , 196(1)(b) (disturbing public harmony) , 299 (insulting religion) , 110 (attempt to culpable homicide) , 191(1) (rioting) , and 115(2) (causing intentional hurt) . Apart from BHU students, the arrested also included alumni and activists of a left-wing student organisation Bhagat Singh Morcha (BSM). On December 26, they were produced before the court and sent to 14 days of judicial custody. November 25, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s military leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on Monday ruled out any negotiations with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), saying the only solution is for them to lay down their arms and gather in designated areas. Since its launch on September 26, the army has made significant gains in its military campaign against the RSF, reclaiming numerous positions in the capital, Khartoum, and Sennar state. “There is no settlement and no negotiation,” Burhan said during a conference on women’s issues in eastern Sudan. “We have proposed a settlement: that these rebels lay down their arms and gather in specific areas, then the Sudanese people will consider their fate.” He accused the RSF of besieging El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, as well as South and West Kordofan, and parts of other states, cutting off food and water supplies, killing civilians, and raping women. “Negotiate with him about what? We will not negotiate with him,” Burhan said. He stressed that the army and other security forces are determined to “eliminate the rebellion and eradicate the criminal terrorist militia of the Daglo family,” referring to the RSF. Burhan also denied calling for a conference of political forces, saying “this talk is untrue and we have not invited politicians or anyone to negotiate and establish a platform.” He added: “Our hands are extended to every sincere Sudanese who is jealous for his country and has repented. The door to repentance is open to all, and repentance has conditions. It is known that those who repent deprecate the work they were doing before.” The military-led government has pursued criminal charges against leaders of the Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC) coalition, accusing them of collaborating with the RSF. The public prosecutor’s office says it has evidence that some FFC leaders were involved in war crimes, which the coalition denies. Burhan also praised Sudanese women for standing with the armed forces and supporting them in defending the country, calling for the utilization of resources in the east to develop and empower women in the region. He acknowledged harmful practices that have marginalized large segments of society, saying: “I have seen women living on the margins of life in remote areas without education or health. We want to correct this matter and care for these communities.” Women have paid a heavy price due to the ongoing conflict, especially those heading households after the widespread destruction of infrastructure and livelihoods. They also face horrific violations, including rape, forced displacement, and sexual exploitation.Christmas Day NFL Special Showdown: Kansas City Chiefs take on Pittsburgh Steelers in Streaming Debut on Netflix. COPPERAS COVE — For many, the holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and coming together with family and friends. Yet for some, in spite of the gifts, music, good food, and events, there is a struggle with depression, stress, and more. A Copperas Cove church wants people to know they are not alone. On Sunday, Dec. 1, at 9:30 and 11 a.m., Cadence City Church in Copperas Cove will devote its two service times for the 7th annual Mental Health Sunday. Jo Anne Harrison, M.Ed., LPC-S, is the founder of Killeen-based Restorative Hope Sanctuary, a Christian counseling facility which also uses equine therapy and talk therapy by licensed counselors. “This really means a lot to me, because of what God lets me do in the world. I’m super pumped about being able to share with people and get them hooked up with resources that they may need,” Harrison said. This year, Harrison has spearheaded the event for the church and has engaged with a lineup of counselors, mental health organizations, and community professionals to present their services and missions. The idea is to provide encouragement for those struggling with issues — and possibly the stigma — of looking for help. “We want to give people tools that when they do need them, they know where to look. Because if you don’t know where to look, then you try to suffer in silence,” Bernier said. On Dec. 1, the church hopes that those who attend the services will get connected with a group or organization that can help them. About Cadence City Church Cadence City Church is a nondenominational church with a vision to help people know God, find freedom, discover their purpose, and make a difference. Breaking News Don't miss out on the headlines from Breaking News. Followed categories will be added to My News. Britain, Germany, France, Italy and several other European countries said Monday they would freeze all pending asylum requests from Syrians, a day after the ouster of president Bashar al-Assad. While Berlin and other governments said they were watching the fast-moving developments in the war-ravaged nation, Austria signalled it would soon deport refugees back to Syria. Far-right politicians elsewhere made similar demands, including in Germany -- home to Europe's largest Syrian community -- at a time when immigration has become a hot-button issue across the continent. Alice Weidel, of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany, reacted with disdain to Sunday's mass rallies by jubilant Syrians celebrating Assad's downfall. "Anyone in Germany who celebrates 'free Syria' evidently no longer has any reason to flee," she wrote on X. "They should return to Syria immediately." World leaders and Syrians abroad watched in disbelief at the weekend as Islamist-led rebels swept into Damascus, ending Assad's brutal rule while also sparking new uncertainty. A German foreign ministry spokesman pointed out that "the fact that the Assad regime has been ended is unfortunately no guarantee of peaceful developments" in the future. Germany has taken in almost one million Syrians, with most arriving in 2015-16 under ex-chancellor Angela Merkel. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said many Syrian refugees "now finally have hope of returning to their Syrian homeland" but cautioned that "the situation in Syria is currently very unclear". The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees had imposed a freeze on decisions for ongoing asylum procedures "until the situation is clearer". She added that "concrete possibilities of return cannot yet be predicted and it would be unprofessional to speculate in such a volatile situation". Rights group Amnesty International slammed Germany's freeze on asylum decisions, stressing that for now "the human rights situation in the country is completely unclear". The head of the UN refugee agency also cautioned that "patience and vigilance" were needed on the issue of refugee returns. - 'Repatriation and deportation' - In Austria, where about 100,000 Syrians live, conservative Chancellor Karl Nehammer instructed the interior ministry "to suspend all ongoing Syrian asylum applications and to review all asylum grants". Interior Minister Gerhard Karner added he had "instructed the ministry to prepare an orderly repatriation and deportation programme to Syria". "The political situation in Syria has changed fundamentally and, above all, rapidly in recent days," the ministry said, adding it is "currently monitoring and analysing the new situation". The French interior ministry said it too would put asylum requests from Syrians on hold, with authorities in Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway announcing similar moves. Britain's interior ministry said it was taking the same measure "whilst we assess the current situation". The Italian government said late Monday after a cabinet meeting that it too was suspending asylum request "in line with other European partners." The leader of the far-right Sweden Democrats, a coalition partner in the government, said residence permits for Syrian refugees should now be "reviewed". "Destructive Islamist forces are behind the change of power" in Syria, wrote their leader Jimmie Akesson on X. "I see that groups are happy about this development here in Sweden. You should see it as a good opportunity to go home." In Greece, a government spokesman voiced hope that Assad's fall will eventually allow "the safe return of Syrian refugees" to their country, but without announcing concrete measures. - 'Populist and irresponsible' - In Germany, the debate gained momentum as the country heads towards February elections. Achim Brotel, president of a grouping of German communes, called for border controls to stop fleeing Assad loyalists reaching Germany. The centre-right opposition CDU suggested that rejected Syrian asylum-seekers should now lose so-called subsidiary protection. "If the reason for protection no longer applies, then refugees will have to return to their home country," CDU legislator Thorsten Frei told Welt TV. CDU MP Jens Spahn suggested that Berlin charter flights to Syria and offer 1,000 euros ($1,057) to "anyone who wants to return". A member of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats criticised the debate as "populist and irresponsible". Greens party deputy Anton Hofreiter also said "it is completely unclear what will happen next in Syria" and deportation talk was "completely out of place". Many Syrians in Germany have watched the events in their home country with great joy but prefer to wait and see before deciding whether to return. "We want to go back to Syria," said Mahmoud Zaml, 25, who works in an Arabic pastry shop in Berlin, adding that he hopes to help "rebuild" his country. "But we have to wait a bit now," he told AFP. "We have to see what happens and if it is really 100 percent safe, then we will go back to Syria." burs-fz/rlp/phz/gv/giv Originally published as European countries suspend Syrian asylum decisions after Assad's fall More related stories Breaking News Major 2GB change after Hadley’s shock exit The radio presenter dropped the major announcement while speaking on air, after his shock retirement last month.
