UNITED NATIONS, United States (AFP)— A massacre of more than 200 people in Haiti this month followed a gang-ordered manhunt that saw victims, many of them elderly, pulled from their homes and shot or killed with machetes, the UN said Monday. The victims were suspected of involvement in voodoo and accused by a gang leader of poisoning his child, with the suspects taken to a “training center” where many were dismembered or burned after being killed. A civil society organisation had said at the time that the gang leader was convinced his son’s illness was caused by followers of the religion. “On the evening of December 6, (Micanor Altes) ordered the members of his gang — around 300 — to carry out a brutal ‘manhunt.’ They stormed into about ten alleys of the (Port-au-Prince) neighborhood and forcibly dragged the victims out of their homes,” said the report, authored jointly by the UN office in Haiti, BINUH, and the UN Human Rights Commissioner (OCHR). In the days that followed, the gang returned to the neighborhood, abducting adherents from a voodoo temple, targeting individuals suspected of tipping off local media and slaughtering people seeking to escape. Some of the bodies “were then burned with gasoline, or dismembered and dumped into the sea,” the report concluded. A total of 134 men and 73 women were killed in total over six days, the report said. A mosaic of violent gangs control most of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The impoverished Caribbean country has been mired for decades by political instability, made worse in recent years by gangs that have grown in strength and organisational sophistication. Despite a Kenyan-led police support mission, backed by the United States and UN, violence has continued to soar. “According to BINUH and OHCHR, since January 2024, more than 5,358 people have been killed and 2,155 injured,” the report said. “This brings the total number of people killed or injured in Haiti to at least 17,248 since the beginning of 2022.” The UN Security Council “strongly condemned the continued destabilising criminal activities of armed gangs and stressed the need for the international community to redouble its efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to the population.” A spokeswoman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said “these crimes touched the very foundation of Haitian society, targeting the most vulnerable populations.” Voodoo was brought to Haiti by African slaves and is a mainstay of the country’s culture. It was banned during French colonial rule and only recognised as an official religion by the Haitian government in 2003. While it incorporates elements of other religious beliefs, including Catholicism, voodoo has been historically attacked by other religions.Intech Investment Management LLC decreased its holdings in shares of MSA Safety Incorporated ( NYSE:MSA – Free Report ) by 39.8% in the third quarter, according to its most recent Form 13F filing with the Securities & Exchange Commission. For months, members of the General Assembly have been holding hearings about what some say is the need to enhance benefits for some public employees hired after 2011, because their benefits may not be in line with standards set by Social Security. There were also arguments that the benefits are not enough to attract and retain talent for the public sector. Groups of labor unions took part in Friday’s Illinois House Personnel and Pensions Committee, pitching a measure to increase the wage cap, change the cost of living adjustments, and restore the Tier I retirement age for Tier II public employees hired after 2011. Pat Devaney with the We Are One coalition said the taxpayer cost isn’t known. “We stand ready to work with the leaders in the General Assembly and the governor’s office to identify revenue to pay for our proposals when the costs are known,” Devaney told the committee. It’s also unclear what it could cost to comply with Social Security standards if nothing is done. During an Illinois House committee Friday, Pat Devaney with the We Are One Coalition and state Rep. Steven Reick, R-Woodstock, discuss the unknown taxpayer cost of pension enhancements. Separately, Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Wirepoints President Ted Dabrowski discuss pensions. “I’ve seen several estimates, let’s just call it three to $6 billion total over a 20-plus year period,” Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Thursday at an unrelated event. “So that is something that has to be done.” State Rep. Steven Reick, R-Woodstock, said without knowing the costs, they need to focus on the debt that is known. “And I think it gives the taxpayers, people who are actually paying the bill, an understanding of what we are doing about this debt because this debt is hanging over us like the Sword of Damocles and it's never going to go away,” Reick said during the committee hearing Friday. The Illinois Commission on Government and Accountability reports the state’s unfunded liability grew $1.5 million last year to $143.7 billion, the second highest since it was $144.2 billion in 2020. Separately, Wirepoints President Ted Dabrowski said the conversation should be about cutting the costs, not increasing benefits. “Some of these Tier II plans increase costs for taxpayers by billions, some as much as $80 billion, and so we’re not going to fix Illinois until we fire a bunch of those politicians that refuse to talk about pension reform,” Dabrowski told The Center Square. Dabrowski advocates for a constitutional amendment to allow for pension benefits to be reduced.jolibet reviews

Vacaville Police host Shop With a CopIrish premier Simon Harris has said Fine Gael will gain seats in the General Election despite a further fragmentation of Irish politics. Fine Gael won 35 seats in the 2020 election, but 18 of those TDs did not seek re-election in Friday’s poll. An exit poll puts the party’s support at 21%, a fraction of a percentage behind the main opposition party Sinn Fein. Mr Harris, the outgoing Taoiseach, was elected with 16,869 first preference votes, well above the quota. Ahead of his re-election, Mr Harris told reporters he was “cautiously optimistic” about the election result and said it was “clear that my party will gain seats”. “It’s also clear that Fine Gael will top the poll in at least 10 constituencies, many more than we did the last time, that we will gain seats in constituencies where we haven’t had seats in many years, like Tipperary South and Waterford, and that we will add second seats in other constituencies as well,” he said. “I think the people of Ireland have now spoken. We now have to work out exactly what they have said, and that is going to take a little bit of time.” Simon Harris is hugged by his wife after being re-elected (Niall Carson/PA) He described the Sinn Fein vote as “pretty significantly down”, the Fianna Fail vote as “marginally down” and the Fine Gael vote as “static” compared with its 2020 vote. He said it was “a very close, a very competitive election” and that “we haven’t seen a Sinn Fein surge or anything like it”. He said: “It was predicted by many that I would become the Taoiseach for a brief period of time, take over from Leo Varadkar, and then have to rebuild my party from the opposition benches as Sinn Fein led a government. “We don’t know what’s going to happen on government formation yet, but that is now looking less likely than it was.” “Definitely, politics in Ireland has gotten much more fragmented,” he said. Fine Gael minister Helen McEntee said that her party’s campaign had been “positive”. “The feeling on the doors was very much that people were relatively happy with the government,” she said on RTE Radio. “It will come down to the last seats and it will come down to transfers,” she said of the final result, adding that Fianna Fail and Fine Gael were performing better than the exit poll estimated. This ASX 200 uranium stock is 'incredibly cheap'

Michigan, Ohio State fight broken up with police pepper spray after Wolverines stun Buckeyes 13-10WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawmakers, meet your latest lobbyists: online influencers from TikTok. The platform is once again bringing influencers to Washington, this time to lobby members of Congress to reject a fast-moving bill that would force TikTok’s Beijing-based parent company to sell or be banned in the United States. On Tuesday, some influencers began a two-day advocacy event in support of TikTok, which arranged their trip ahead of a House floor vote on the legislation on Wednesday. But unlike a similar lobbying event the company put together last March when talks of a TikTok ban reached a fever pitch, this year’s effort appeared more rushed as the company scrambles to counter the legislation, which advanced rapidly on Capitol Hill. Summer Lucille, a TikTok content creator with 1.4 million followers who is visiting Washington this week, said if TikTok is banned, she “don’t know what it will do” to her business, a plus-sized boutique in Charlotte, North Carolina. “It will be devastating,” Lucille said in an interview arranged by the platform. The legislation is drawing unusual support in Congress In an unusual showing of bipartisanship, a House panel unanimously approved the measure last week. President Joe Biden has said he will sign the legislation if lawmakers pass it. But it’s unclear what will happen in the Senate, where several bills aimed at banning TikTok have stalled. The legislation faces other roadblocks. Former president and current presidential candidate Donald Trump, who holds sway over both House and Senate Republicans, has voiced opposition to the bill, saying it would empower Meta-owned Facebook, which he continues to lambast over his 2020 election loss. The bill also faces pushback from some progressive lawmakers in the House as well as civil liberties groups who argue it infringes on the First Amendment. TikTok could be banned if ByteDance, the parent company, doesn’t sell its stakes in the platform and other applications it owns within six months of the bill’s enactment. The fight over the platform takes place as U.S.-China relations have shifted to that of strategic rivalry, especially in areas such as advanced technologies and data security, seen as essential to each country’s economic prowess and national security. The shift, which started during the Trump years and has continued under Biden, has placed restrictions on export of advanced technologies and outflow of U.S. monies to China, as well as access to the U.S. market by certain Chinese businesses. The Biden administration also has cited human rights concerns in blacklisting a number of Chinese companies accused of assisting the state surveillance campaign against ethnic minorities. TikTok isn’t short on lobbyists. Its Beijing-based parent company ByteDance has a strong lobbying apparatus in Washington that includes dozens of lobbyists from well-known consulting and legal firms as well as influential insiders, such as former members of Congress and ex-aides to powerful lawmakers, according to the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will also be in Washington this week and plans to meet with lawmakers, according to a company spokesperson who said Chew’s visit was previously scheduled. Influencers descend on Washington But influencers, who have big followings on social media and can share personal stories of how the platform boosted their businesses — or simply gave them a voice — are still perhaps one of the most powerful tools the company has in its arsenal. A TikTok spokesperson said dozens of influencers will attend the two-day event, including some who came last year. The spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about how many new people would be attending this year’s lobbying blitz. The company is briefing them ahead of meetings with their representatives and media interviews. Lucille, who runs the boutique in North Carolina, says has seen a substantial surge in revenue because of her TikTok page. The 34-year-old began making TikTok content focusing on plus-sized fashion in March 2022, more than a decade after she started her business. She quickly amassed thousands of followers after posting a nine-second video about her boutique. Because of her popularity on the platform, her business has more online exposure and customers, some of whom have visited from as far as Europe. She says she also routinely hears from followers who are finding support through her content about fashion and confidence. JT Laybourne, an influencer who also came to Washington, said he joined TikTok in early 2019 after getting some negative comments on videos he posted on Instagram while singing in the car with his children. Laybourne, who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, said he was attracted to the short-form video platform because it was easy to create videos that contained music. Like Lucille, he quickly gained traction on the app. He says he also received more support from TikTok users, who reacted positively to content he produced on love and positivity. Laybourne says the community he built on the platform rallied around his family when he had to undergo heart surgery in 2020. Following the surgery, he said he used the platform to help raise $1 million for the American Heart Association in less than two years. His family now run an apparel company that gets most of its traffic from TikTok. “I will fight tooth-and-nail for this app,” he said. But whether the opposition the company is mounting through lobbyists or influencers will be enough to derail the bill is yet to be seen. On Tuesday, House lawmakers received a briefing on national security concerns regarding TikTok from the FBI, Justice Department and intelligence officials. ____ AP Journalist Didi Tang contributed to this report. ___ This story was originally published on March 12, 2024. The US Energy Department said on Tuesday it is offering initial contracts to six companies to produce domestic uranium fuel for conventional nuclear plants to generate electricity. The department is trying to kick-start a domestic uranium fuel supply chain to reduce dependence on Russia, from which US reactors get about 25% of their enriched uranium in recent years. The United States put a ban on the imports from Russia as part of a package of sanctions on Moscow over its full scale invasion of Ukraine. The ban allows waivers until 2028. The US is investigating uranium imports to see if China is helping Russia circumvent the ban. “These contracts generated from this action will help spur the safe and responsible build-out of uranium enrichment capacity in the United States,” said Michael Goff, principal deputy assistant secretary for nuclear energy. The following companies won contracts: Centrus’s American Centrifuge Operating; General Matter; Global Laser Enrichment; Urenco’s Louisiana Energy Services; Laser Isotope Separation Technologies and Orano Federal Services. Four of those companies got initial US contracts in October to produce a more enriched fuel called high-assay low-enriched uranium, or HALEU, to be used in smaller reactors that are not yet commercial. Conventional uranium fuel is up to 5% enriched while HALEU is up to 20% enriched. The contracts at the start are for a minimum of $2 million. They will last for up to 10 years with $2.7 billion available for the program. (By Timothy Gardner)

Penn State opened an investigation into the incident involving Jason Kelce slamming a fan’s phone to the ground outside Beaver Stadium last month. That investigation is now closed. Penn State University Police and Public Safety confirmed to PennLive on Tuesday night that the investigation around the incident involving Kelce on Nov. 2 has closed. “The individual in the video football circulating on social media has not been identified, and no one has come forward to University Police with a related complaint about damage to personal property,” a Penn State police spokesperson confirmed to PennLive. The incident occured before Penn State’s high-profile game against Ohio State. Taunts and homophobic slurs were hurled toward Kelce outside Beaver Stadium. The former Philadelphia Eagles star and current ESPN analyst appeared on “College GameDay” before the game. Videos on social media showed a fan in a Penn State sweatshirt walking behind Kelce. “Hey Kelce! How does it feel your brother is a (expletive) for dating Taylor Swift?” Kelce’s brother, Travis, is a star for the Kansas City Chiefs and dates the superstar singer. Kelce turned around, grabbed the fan’s phone and threw it on the ground. Then, he picked the phone up and continued walking with it. Another video shared on social media showed the fan chasing Kelce asking for his phone back. Kelce replied: “Who’s the (expletive) now?” Kelce addressed the altercation on ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” a couple days later, saying he was “not proud” of the situation. “In a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate, and I don’t think that’s a productive thing. I really don’t,” Kelce said. “I don’t think it leads to discourse and (I don’t think) it’s the right way to go about things. In that moment, I fell down to a level that I shouldn’t have.” Penn State coach James Franklin later commented on the situation when asked about fan frustrations around the Nittany Lions’ eventual loss to Ohio State. “I saw something with Jason Kelce,” Franklin said. “Jason Kelce was coming to State College. I wanted him to have a wonderful experience. I didn’t get a chance to meet him or see him. I saw something that I wasn’t very, very proud of. I wish that didn’t happen.” After the incident, Penn State University Police and Public Safety opened an investigation after an officer “observed a visitor damaging personal property” at an intersection outside of Beaver Stadium, according to Penn State police’s daily crime log. Tom Homan explains how he plans to implement mass deportations for illegal migrants on ‘Hannity.’ EXCLUSIVE: Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin will introduce a budget proposal banning "sanctuary cities" in his state, along with ensuring tax money will not go to counties or independent cities that aren’t complying with ICE. The proposal will require local police and corrections officers to fulfill Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer requests for criminal illegal immigrants and notify the federal government within two days of releasing any such person who matriculates through the justice system. Additionally, any municipality that identifies as a sanctuary city or enacts similar policies will have state funding typically allocated toward supporting their police departments withheld by Richmond. The Department of Criminal Justice Services, currently led by Youngkin appointee and former Prince William County Officer Jackson Miller, will be advised to withhold what is called "599 Funding" in that regard. YOUNGKIN ‘PERSONALLY INVITES’ NEW TRUMP ADMIN TO RELOCATE TO VIRGINIA OVER DC Youngkin speaks at a Salem, Virginia, Trump rally. (AP/Steve Helber) "Criminals who are in the United States illegally will be turned over to ICE," Youngkin told Fox News Digital on Thursday. "We must stop the cycle of violence and crime that is being enabled by some local governments. Virginia is not a sanctuary state, and we must be clear that we will not allow localities to become ‘sanctuary cities.'" The Republican governor, who is term-limited next year under Virginia’s one-and-done policy, said that if local governments "pander to pro-illegal immigrant groups" they’ll see the state-taxpayer assistance spigot turned off. The news comes amid recent violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants in Virginia, most recently the sexual assault of a jogger on a popular Herndon rail-trail. Shortly before Thanksgiving, Honduran national Denis Humberto Navarette-Romero was charged with intent to defile and rape a woman on the Old Dominion Trail. The Washington, D.C., suburb’s police chief said it was the first stranger-rape case in her 12 years on the job. YOUNGKIN: EDUCATION IS THE ‘BEDROCK OF THE AMERICAN DREAM’ Glenn Youngkin holds a campaign event in Amherst, Virginia, Oct. 28, 2021. (Charles Creitz/Fox News) Critics pointed to Fairfax County’s sanctuary-type policies as Navarette-Romero had been previously arrested for auto theft and indecent exposure. In 2018, Fairfax County Sheriff Stacey Kincaid notified ICE her office will no longer hold inmates past release dates unless an administrative request to hold the suspects is accompanied by a legal criminal detainer. Kincaid told WJLA earlier this year her department requires such a warrant, after ICE officials criticized a lack of cooperation with Virginia’s largest county by-population. Only three of 725 "undocumented individuals" in Fairfax custody between July 2023 and July 2024 were transferred to ICE, the outlet reported. Also in November, Arlington County’s board voted 4-1 in favor of a policy stipulating police may only notify ICE in cases involving gang members and very serious crimes, according to ArlNow. The vote came as activists chanted "ICE Out Of Arlington!" CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Alexandria, an independent city, initiated a policy in 2007 stating it would not inquire about citizenship "beyond what is required by state and federal law." In 2017, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney responded to President Trump’s immigration policies by ordering the city's police department not to consent to participate in ICE collaboration agreements and not to inquire about citizenship status "in the interest of public safety." Virginia officials have said the state Department of Corrections has always and continues to recognize ICE detainers during Youngkin’s tenure. Incoming Trump "Border Czar" Thomas Homan has repeatedly pledged a "mass deportation" initiative and similarly warned sanctuary cities he will use the might of the federal government to enforce compliance with the law. The company filed in documents in Federal Court in Vancouver on Thursday. The government ordered the dissolution of TikTok’s Canadian business in November after a national security review of the Chinese company behind the social media platform. That means TikTok must "wind down" its operations in Canada, though the app will continue to be available to Canadians. TikTok wants the court to overturn the government’s order and to place a pause on the order while the court hears the case. It is claiming the minister's decision was "unreasonable" and "driven by improper purposes." The review was carried out through the Investment Canada Act, which allows the government to investigate any foreign investment with potential to harm national security. Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said in a statement at the time the government was taking action to address "specific national security risks," though it didn’t specify what those risks were. TikTok’s filing says Champagne "failed to engage with TikTok Canada on the purported substance of the concerns that led to the (order.)" The company argues the government ordered "measures that bear no rational connection to the national security risks it identifies." It says the reasons for the order "are unintelligible, fail to reveal a rational chain of analysis and are rife with logical fallacies." The company's law firm, Osler Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, declined to comment, while Champagne’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A TikTok spokesperson said in a statement that the order would "eliminate the jobs and livelihoods of our hundreds of dedicated local employees — who support the community of more than 14 million monthly Canadian users on TikTok, including businesses, advertisers, creators and initiatives developed especially for Canada." In league memos previously obtained by The Associated Press, the NFL said homes of professional athletes across multiple sports have become "increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups." The glamorous TV reporter has spent the last six years working for NBC Sports Philadelphia, winning an army of fans for her brilliant coverage of the Eagles , 76ers , Phillies and Flyers. She is loved by viewers, players and teams for her superb coverage on the sideline for NBA , MLB, NFL and NHL games. Hatcher, 31, has also won fans over for her playful social media content - which once included calling out a hater by revealing the woman's SON had slid into her DMs. Philly Sports Fan and Rutgers Hatcher grew up in Delran, New Jersey, which is just over the Delaware river from downtown Philadelphia. Her father was a huge Philadelphia sports fan and played college basketball. READ MORE NBA NEWS That rubbed off on Hatcher and her siblings, with one of her brothers - who is now a helicopter pilot in the US Navy - a hockey player. Hatcher played soccer up to high school level, in midfield and defense, although a serious knee injury ended her hopes of getting a college scholarship - although she has described that as a "blessing in disguise". She later told the SheWritesSports blog: "My dad was a big influence. We grew up watching a ton of sports together. "One night when I was little he pointed out to me that you could get paid to watch and talk about sports on TV. Most read in Basketball "It was a done deal. I never really entertained the idea of pursuing another career after that." She eventually enrolled at Rutgers, where she graduated early with a journalism/political science double major. During her time in college, Hatcher interned at CBS in New York and CSN in South Philadelphia, as well as appearing on school broadcasts and the Big Ten Network. Hatcher would also supplement her income by waiting tables at Chickie's & Pete's in Bordentown. She then made the decision to move nearly 5,000 MILES away to Honolulu, Hawaii, to take a job at Hawaii News Now. Fans' Favorite Hatcher told South Jersey magazine that the move to Hawaii was "random". "I knew I had to leave to get my foot in the door," she said, "Philly is a huge market and I needed to go get reps somewhere else." Around the time of the finals she applied for jobs in Wisconsin, Missouri and Hawaii and they were the first to call back for an interview. The big move took a bit of adjustment, with Hatcher later admitting to Philadelphia magazine: "I was in so over my head. "Once I got comfortable and found a rhythm, they really let me be creative and show my personality, which I think helped me here." After three years in the Pacific, Hatcher came back home to Philadelphia - a move she was "crazy excited" for having grown up supporting Philly teams and previously interning at the station. In the six years since being back, she has became a firm favorite for Philly sports fans and has been gaining some national attention. Players and staff of the major league clubs joke and banter with her on first name terms and she has the trust of the biggest stars in the city. She has also become a must-follow for local fans and has now racked up almost 200,000 followers across her social media channels. Hatcher frequently gets messages describing her as "beautiful" and like a "supermodel" - but also faces vile abuse. Bringing Down Haters Like many other women working in sports, Hatcher has to deal with toxic messages and online abuse. She says experience has taught her to ignore them, but one of her favorite stories was when dealing with a woman who messaged her to say, "you dress like a cheap hooker." Read More on The US Sun Hatcher revealed she checked the woman's profile and recognised a name tagged in a post - it was the son of the hater who had been in her DMs trying to buy USED clothes of Hatcher's. She sent a screenshot of the message back to the woman and replied: "It seems like your son likes my clothes just fine."

Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects isn’t necessarily known as a news breaker or insider among NHL circles, but he is a fairly trusted source for hockey and prospect news. Following news that Tyler Seguin will be on the shelf for up to six months, Robinson has ignited speculation with a trade rumor suggesting Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin could be headed to the Dallas Stars. Robinson shared the buzz on social media, noting, “It feels like the right time to slip it out there.” Evgeni Malkin to the Dallas Stars? I've been sitting on this rumour for awhile, but it feels like the right time to slip it out there pic.twitter.com/rV9XDp1yAs The timing of this rumor is noteworthy, as the Stars recently placed Seguin on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) following hip surgery. Robison suggested that the Stars were always aware this was likely to happen and have already dug into the idea of Malkin being added to the roster with Seguin’s $9.85 million cap hit temporarily off the books. Dallas has an estimated $6.5 million in cap space, potentially setting the stage for a blockbuster move. He notes: A couple weeks back, I had a little birdie whisper in my ear, watch out for Dallas and Evgeni Malkin. .. They were considering shutting him [Seguin] down before the December 10th deadline, putting him on LTIR unit the regular season ended, then he’d be ready to go for the playoffs. They would save all that cap space and with that cap space, they would then go out and trade for Evgeni Malkin.” A Few Hurdles the Stars Would Have To Dump To Make Malkin a Reality Robinson admitted there are a lot of moving parts here. First, the numbers have to work, but he believes they already jive. Second, Jim Nill and Kyle Dubas would need to come to an agreement on a trade package. What would it take from Dallas to get Malkin? Robinson threw out a few names, but in a follow-up post, he wrote, “For clarity, I didn’t say Dallas would move [Logan] Stankoven, [Wyatt] Johnston or [Thomas] Harley. I’m saying for Pittsburgh to agree and take it to Malkin, the ask would have to be high.” Finally, Malkin would have to agree to the trade. He’s got a no-move clause, and he’s been fairly consistent in his messaging that he doesn’t want to leave long-time teammates Sidney Crosby or Kris Letang. Would Malkin Even Help the Stars? Malkin, 38, remains a productive force with 24 points (six goals, 18 assists) in 27 games this season. He is signed through 2025-26 with a $6.1 million AAV. However, the pieces Robinson mentions in trade going back are not easy pieces for Dallas to part with. It’s fair to argue it’s not worth doing. Obviously, President Kyle Dubas would be open to the move, allowing the Penguins to get younger and build for the future. Malkin is an icon in Pittsburgh, but the team — despite four wins in a row — is not likely a Cup contender. Dubas wants to make the roster younger. Malkin’s addition would bolster Dallas’ playoff aspirations, filling the offensive void left by Seguin. Fans will be watching closely to see if this rumor gains traction or if this is just someone spitballing, and there’s really not much to do about it. **Author’s Note: On paper, there are some real flaws in this theory, not the least of which is the Stars potentially giving up a huge package to land an aging Malkin. However, the idea that Dallas might be looking at an impact player and intend to use the LTIR money saved by Seguin’s injury is not far-fetched. LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Austin Seibert choked back tears taking responsibility for missing the extra point that would have tied the score in the final minute. Jeremy Reaves choked back tears blaming himself for a missed assignment that led to a kickoff return touchdown. And John Bates choked back tears talking about moving forward from his costly fumble. All of those late mistakes contributed to the Washington Commanders' third consecutive loss , 34-26 to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday in a game that was wholly unremarkable until fourth quarter chaos. The teams combined to score 31 points in the final four minutes, the most in an NFL game in more than a decade, and the Commanders (7-5) came out on the wrong end of it in a defeat that further endangers their playoff chances. “Any time you lose a game or you lose a game in that type of fashion, it’s very difficult and it’s tough, but it never comes down to one play,” rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels said. “There’s plays throughout the game where little things add up to big things.” There were a lot of little things. After Bates fumbled, the Cowboys (4-7) took an 11-point lead and the Commanders made a 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to three, Dallas' KaVonte Turpin returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. “I didn’t make the play when it was there to make, and it cost us,” said Reaves, one of the league’s top special teams players and the All-Pro pick for that two seasons ago. “No excuse, man. I’ve made that play 100 times, and I didn’t make it today and it cost us the game. It’s unacceptable. It’s solely on me. It’s going to sting for a while. It’s going to hurt.” After Seibert made a 51-yard field goal, Daniels connected with Terry McLaurin on an 86-yard TD that made it 27-26 with 21 seconds left. Coach Dan Quinn said no thought was given to going for 2 in that situation. Seibert, who missed the past two games with a right hip injury, was wide left on the point-after attempt. “I just wasn’t striking it well,” said Seibert, who added he felt fine and did not blame a low snap for his miss. "It didn’t make a difference at all. It was on me.” Juanyeh Thomas returned the onside kick immediately after 43 yards for a touchdown to put Dallas up eight with 14 seconds left. The 31 combined points are the second most in a game since at least 2000, behind only Minnesota and Baltimore's 36 in their game Dec. 8, 2013. Cowboys-Commanders was the first game in the Super Bowl era to have two missed extra points, two kickoff return touchdowns and a blocked punt. “We got down to the end there and it was a game-situational extravaganza,” Dallas coach Mike McCarthy said. “It was like Yahtzee. Everything was in there." While Washington's skid continued, the Cowboys ended their losing streak at five thanks to strong play from QB Cooper Rush, a defense that forced two turnovers and, of course, special teams success. Rush was 24 of 32 for 247 yards and TD passes to Jalen Tolbert and Luke Schoonmaker. “Lot of games left,” Rush said. “We’re sitting at 4-7. This is why you play them.” The Commanders have some soul-searching to do after losing as a 10 1/2-point favorite in the meeting of NFC East rivals and doing so in a way that left players so emotional. “The crazy games, I know they feel a little bit better whenever you win them,” punter and holder Tress Way said. “But that’s a tough pill to swallow.” Cowboys: LG Tyler Smith was inactive with ankle and knee injuries. ... RG Zack Martin (ankle), CB Trevon Diggs (groin/knee) and TE Jake Ferguson (concussion) were ruled out prior to game day and did not travel for the game. Commanders: RB Austin Ekeler was concussed on a kickoff return in the final seconds and taken to a hospital for further evaluation. ... RB Brian Robinson Jr. left with an ankle injury in the first half, returned and then left again. ... RT Andrew Wylie was concussed in the third quarter and did not return. ... C Tyler Biadasz was evaluated for a concussion in the fourth. ... CB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring) missed a third consecutive game since being acquired at the trade deadline from New Orleans. Cowboys: Host the New York Giants on Thursday in the traditional Thanksgiving Day game in Dallas. Commanders: Host the Tennessee Titans next Sunday in Washington’s final game before its late bye week. KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — Police arrested a 16-year-old student after he allegedly brought a gun to his high school in Kenosha, the second time in less than a month that someone has apparently tried to bring a firearm into one of the southeastern Wisconsin city's schools. Indian Trail High School and Academy's resource officer learned Monday that a photo of the student with a gun had been posted on social media, police said in a statement Wednesday. The student was located, escorted to an office, arrested and taken to the police department. Investigators later determined that the student had hidden a gun in a “sensitive area," making it difficult for officers to locate the weapon initially.Saquon Barkley tops 2,000 yards rushing and moves within 100 of Dickerson's record PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley became the ninth running back in NFL history to top 2,000 yards rushing in a season, reaching the milestone with a 23-yard run in the fourth quarter against the Dallas Cowboys. That rush gave Barkley 2,005 yards with one game left and left him exactly 100 yards from Eric Dickerson’s record of 2,105, set in 1984 for the Los Angeles Rams. Barkley could potentially top the record in next week’s finale against the New York Giants. However, that game will be mostly meaningless for the Eagles, who could opt to rest Barkley to protect him from injury ahead of the playoffs. Bills clinch the AFC's No. 2 seed with a 40-14 rout of the undisciplined Jets ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Josh Allen threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score and the Buffalo Bills clinched the AFC’s No. 2 seed with a 40-14 rout of the New York Jets. The Bills put the game away by capitalizing on two Jets turnovers and scoring three touchdowns over a 5:01 span in the closing minutes of the third quarter. Buffalo’s defense forced three takeaways overall and sacked Aaron Rodgers four times, including a 2-yard loss for a safety in the second quarter. The five-time defending AFC East champion Bills improved to 13-3 to match a franchise single-season record. Saquon Barkley tops 2,000 yards rushing as Eagles beat Cowboys 41-7 to clinch NFC East PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley rushed for 167 yards to top 2,000 on the season, backup quarterback Kenny Pickett ran and threw for scores before departing with injured ribs, and the Philadelphia Eagles clinched the NFC East title by routing the Dallas Cowboys 41-7. Barkley has 2,005 yards and needs 101 in next week’s mostly meaningless regular-season finale to top Eric Dickerson and his 2,105 yards for the Los Angeles Rams in 1984. The Eagles led 24-7 in the third quarter when Pickett was drilled by defensive end Micah Parsons, ending his first start in place of the concussed Jalen Hurts. Penn State coach James Franklin says Nick Saban should be college football's commissioner SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Franklin made the suggestion Sunday at Penn State’s College Football Playoff quarterfinals media day ahead of the Fiesta Bowl. The team’s fifth win in the past six weeks nudged the first-place Bucs a half-game ahead of Atlanta for the best record in the NFC South at 9-7. The Falcons played on the road later Sunday night at Washington. Atlanta holds the tiebreaker in the division race and can end Tampa Bay’s three-year reign as NFC South champions by beating the Commanders and winning again next week at home against the last-place Panthers. The Lakers also sent forward Maxwell Lewis and three second-round draft picks to Brooklyn. Russell averaged a career-low 12.4 points per game for the Lakers this season in a diminished role under new coach JJ Redick. Finney-Smith is a steady 3-and-D wing who fills an obvious need for the Lakers. Russell is being traded by the Lakers to the Nets for the second time in his career. He also made the move in 2017. LeBron James at 40: A milestone birthday arrives Monday for the NBA's all-time scoring leader When LeBron James broke another NBA record earlier this month, the one for most regular-season minutes played in a career, his Los Angeles Lakers teammates handled the moment in typical locker room fashion. They made fun of him. Dubbed The Kid from Akron, with a limitless future, James is now the 40-year-old from Los Angeles with wisps of gray in his beard, his milestone birthday coming Monday, one that will make him the first player in NBA history to play in his teens, 20s, 30s and 40s. He has stood and excelled in the spotlight his entire career. Rising Sun Devils: Arizona State looks to pull off another big surprise at the Peach Bowl ATLANTA (AP) — As they prepare for Arizona State’s biggest game in nearly three decades, the guys who made it happen aren’t the least bit surprised to be rated a nearly two-touchdown underdog in the College Football Playoff. That’s a familiar position for the Sun Devils. They've been an underdog most of the season. Of the eight teams still vying for a national championship, there’s no bigger surprise than 11-2 Arizona State. The Sun Devils went 3-9 a year ago and were picked to finish dead last in their first season in the Big 12 Conference. Now, they're getting ready to face Texas in the Peach Bowl quarterfinal game on New Year’s Day. Penn State's polarizing QB Drew Allar puts critics on mute and keeps winning games SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Even when Penn State quarterback Drew Allar gets some praise, it’s usually a backhanded compliment. They say he’s a good game manager and stays within himself, or that he doesn’t try to do too much. They mention he might not be flashy, but he gives the team a chance to win. And here’s the thing about Penn State since Allar stepped under center: The Nittany Lions have won games. A lot of them. Sometimes that’s hard to remember considering the lukewarm reception he often gets from fans. The polarizing Allar has another chance to quiet his critics on Tuesday, when Penn State plays Boise State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals at the Fiesta Bowl. Feels like 1979: Nottingham Forest moves into 2nd place behind rampant Liverpool in Premier League The Premier League table is starting to have a 1979 kind of feel to it with Liverpool at the top of the standings and Nottingham Forest in second place as the closest challenger. Liverpool padded its lead with a 5-0 rout of West Ham on Sunday while upstart Nottingham Forest climbed into second place by beating Everton 2-0 to continue its surprising push for a Champions League place. Manchester City marked Pep Guardiola's 500th game in charge by beating Leicester 2-0 but is still 14 points behind Liverpool having played a game more.Uncover the Mysterious Altcoin Poised to Skyrocket 7,400% – Is This the Next Big Meme Coin Obsession?

Several of President-elect Donald Trump's Cabinet nominees this week were on the receiving end of bomb threats and a form of criminal harassment called "swatting," his camp said. According to a statement from Trump transition spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, the bomb and swatting threats were made on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. “Law enforcement and other authorities acted quickly to ensure the safety of those who were targeted,” Leavitt said. “President Trump and the entire Transition team are grateful for their swift action. An FBI official told USA TODAY the agency is aware of the incidents and is actively investigating. "We take all potential threats seriously, and as always, encourage members of the public to immediately report anything they consider suspicious to law enforcement," the official said. Among the nominees saying they were targeted were New York Rep. Elise Stafanik, Trump's pick to be the next ambassador of the United Nations; Matt Gaetz, Trump's initial attorney general selection; former New York congressman Lee Zeldin, who was tapped to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. But what is swatting? Here's what to know. What is swatting? The FBI describes “swatting” as a prank designed to draw an emergency law enforcement response to a hoax victim, often creating a situation where a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team arrives ready for a possible violent encounter. “The individuals who engage in this activity use technology to make it appear that the emergency call is coming from the victim’s phone,” said one FBI public announcement in 2013, titled, “ The Crime of 'Swatting': Fake 9-1-1 Calls Have Real Consequences — FBI . "Sometimes swatting is done for revenge, sometimes as a prank. Either way, it is a serious crime, and one that has potentially dangerous consequences.” The FBI first warned about the phone hacking phenomenon in 2008 and has arrested hundreds of people over the years on federal charges stemming from swatting incidents. It says most are handled by local and state law enforcement agencies, but that the FBI often provides resources and guidance in these investigations. “The FBI looks at these crimes as a public safety issue,” Kevin Kolbye, an assistant special agent in charge of its Dallas Division, said in the 2013 public warning. “It’s only a matter of time before somebody gets seriously injured as a result of one of these incidents.” Swatting incidents increased as 2024 presidential election approached Federal cybersecurity officials warned of a significant increase in swatting incidents in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election and said numerous incidents had targeted election workers and polling places to disrupt the electoral process. In May 2024, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a joint warning about the threat to elections, noting “multiple swatting incidents specifically targeting election workers” in late 2023 and early 2024. The frequency of the attacks increased dramatically in the weeks before the election and on election day, federal officials said in briefings and public postings. “Both foreign and domestic actors use swatting as a method to harass or intimidate individuals and businesses, including U.S. government officials, faith-based institutions, schools, journalists, company executives, and celebrities,” the agencies said in the May 2024 warning, which provided detailed guidance on how election workers and law enforcement agencies could prevent and respond to swatting incidents. “They may also seek to disrupt critical infrastructure operations, induce fear or chaos, divert law enforcement from other crimes or emergencies, or simply gain attention or notoriety,” the joint warning said. Contributing: Karissa Waddick, USA TODAYODON — A number of communities are holding events to welcome in the holidays. One of the first of the area parades will be the Odon Lighted Christmas Parade on Dec. 2. The event is sponsored by the Odon Business Alliance and Alliance President Morgan Wininger says the parade will reach from one end of town to the other with the parade running from the old high school down Main Street and ending in the park on the west side of town. “The parade starts at 6:30 p.m. The lineup begins around 5:30 p.m. on John Poindexter Street across from Ketcham Memorial,” she said. “Everyone is welcome to participate. You don’t have to register. You just show up and the Odon Fire Department helps line everyone up.” Organizers say the parade has a theme but they don’t require that people adhere to it. “The theme this year is Gingerbread Christmas. We have prizes for the best decorated float,” said Wininger. “We are very excited about it. It brings out a lot of people to Main Street. There are some fun warm things to do out at the park after the parade, put on by The Spirit of Christmas committee.” Officials call the parade a chance to let the people in the area get some closeness heading into Christmas. “It just brings some warmth and happiness to Main Street and it is a way reacquaint the community with what we have to offer locally,” said Wininger. Like in most communities the parade is just a kick-off to even more events. When it ends at the Odon Park that is where the Spirit of Christmas events for the community begins. “We have Santa in the log cabin. People can come to the Pete Sims Building, which is the big metal building. We have hot chocolate and cookies, games and crafts. This year we are have a gingerbread man decorating contest with four different levels. One for pre-k and kindergarten. One for grades one through three, grades four, five and six, and then junior high and high school,” said Spirit of Christmas committee chairman Sue Dart. “The business association will also give away a girl’s bike and a boy’s bike.” The Spirit of Christmas Committee is made up of representatives of several churches in the Odon area. “We try to involve all of the churches because this is our holiday. This is when we celebrate the birth of our Savior. When you get down to it, it is all about Jesus,” said Dart. “Prisoners from Wabash Valley Correctional came in and put up the majority of the lights. The Daviess County inmates are running the extension cords. They play an important part in putting this on.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Front Row Motorsports, one of two teams suing NASCAR in federal court, accused the stock car series Thursday of rejecting the planned purchase of a valuable charter unless the lawsuit was dropped. Front Row made the claim in a court filing and said it involved its proposed purchase of the charter from Stewart-Haas Racing. Front Row said the series would only approve it if Front Row and 23XI Racing dropped their court case. “Specifically, NASCAR informed us that it would not approve the (charter) transfer unless we agreed to drop our current antitrust lawsuit against them,” Jerry Freeze, general manager of Front Row, said in an affidavit filed in the U.S. District Court of Western North Carolina. The two teams in September refused to sign NASCAR's “take-it-or-leave-it” final offer on a new revenue sharing agreement. All other 13 teams signed the deal. Front Row and 23XI balked and are now in court. 23XI co-owner Michael Jordan has said he took the fight to court on behalf of all teams competing in the top motorsports series in the United States. NASCAR has argued that the two teams simply do not like the terms of the final charter agreement and asked for the lawsuit be dismissed. Earlier this week, the suit was transferred to a different judge than the one who heard the first round of arguments and ruled against the two teams in their request for a temporary injunction to be recognized in 2025 as chartered teams as the case proceeds. The latest filing is heavily redacted as it lays out alleged retaliatory actions by NASCAR the teams say have caused irreparable harm. Both Front Row and 23XI want to expand from two full-time cars to three, and have agreements with SHR to purchase one charter each as SHR goes from four cars to one for 2025. The teams can still compete next season but would have to do so as “open” teams that don't have the same protections or financial gains that come from holding a charter. Freeze claimed in the affidavit that Front Row signed a purchase agreement with SHR in April and NASCAR President Steve Phelps told Freeze in September the deal had been approved. But when Front Row submitted the paperwork last month, NASCAR began asking for additional information. A Dec. 4 request from NASCAR was “primarily related to our ongoing lawsuit with NASCAR,” Freeze said. “NASCAR informed us on December 5, 2024, that it objected to the transfer and would not approve it, in contrast to the previous oral approval for the transfer confirmed by Phelps before we filed the lawsuit,” Freeze said. “NASCAR made it clear that the reason it was now changing course and objecting to the transfer is because NASCAR is insisting that we drop the lawsuit and antitrust claims against it as a condition of being approved.” A second affidavit from Steve Lauletta, the president of 23XI Racing, claims NASCAR accused 23XI and Front Row of manufacturing “new circumstances” in a renewed motion for an injunction and of a “coordinated effort behind the scenes.” “This is completely false,” Lauletta said. Front Row is owned by businessman Bob Jenkins, while 23XI is owned by retired NBA Hall of Famer Jordan, three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin and longtime Jordan adviser Curtis Polk. NASCAR had been operating with 36 chartered teams and four open spots since the charter agreement began in 2016. NASCAR now says it will move forward in 2025 with 32 chartered teams and eight open spots, with offers on charters for Front Row and 23XI rescinded and the SHR charters in limbo. The teams contend they must be chartered under some of their contractual agreements with current sponsors and drivers, and competing next year as open teams will cause significant losses. “23XI exists to compete at the highest level of stock car racing, striving to become the best team it can be. But that ambition can only be pursued within NASCAR, which has monopolized the market as the sole top-tier circuit for stock car racing,” Lauletta said. "Our efforts to expand – purchasing more cars and increasing our presence on the track – are integral to achieving this goal. “It is not hypocritical to operate within the only system available while striving for excellence and contending for championships,” he continued. “It is a necessity because NASCAR’s monopoly leaves 23XI no alternative circuit, no different terms, and no other viable avenue to compete at this level.” AP auto racing: https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing

jollibee x The long-running gang and racketeering trial that led Atlanta rapper Young Thug to plead guilty in October ended on Tuesday with the last two defendants found not guilty of racketeering, murder and gang-related charges. Deamonte Kendrick, who raps as Yak Gotti, was acquitted of all charges and Shannon Stillwell was found guilty only of gun possession. The verdicts came nearly two years after jury selection began and a year after opening statements in a trial plagued with problems. The original, sweeping indictment used song lyrics and social media posts as evidence and charged 28 people with conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Young Thug, a Grammy-winning artist whose real name is Jeffery Williams, was set free on probation after he pleaded guilty in October to gang, drug and gun charges. RELATED STORY | Rapper Young Thug pleads guilty to gang, drug and gun charges Kendrick and Stillwell were charged in a 2015 drive-by shooting outside an Atlanta barbershop that killed Donovan Thomas Jr., also known as “Big Nut,” who prosecutors said was in a rival gang. Stillwell also was charged with fatally shooting Shymel Drinks at a red light in 2022, allegedly in retaliation for the killings days earlier of two associates in a gang known as YSL, which prosecutors said was co-founded by Young Thug. Stillwell was sentenced to the 10-year maximum for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon previously convicted of a felony involving a gun, with credit for the two years he already served and the balance to be served on probation. Nine of the defendants, including the rapper Gunna, accepted plea deals before the trial began, and four more pleaded guilty during the trial, in October. Charges against 12 others remain pending. Prosecutors dropped charges against one defendant after he was convicted of murder in an unrelated case. That left Kendrick and Stillwell, both of whom were stabbed while in jail — Stillwell last year and Kendrick on Sunday. Tuesday's verdicts were a major setback for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Critics had criticized her use of the state’s anti-racketeering law, which she also used to bring charges against President-elect Donald Trump for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election. “We always respect the verdict of a jury,” said Jeff DiSantis, a spokesperson for Willis. Defense attorneys said the state relied on faulty evidence — song lyrics, cherry-picked social media posts and unreliable witness testimony — to create a misleading narrative about young men who turned to music to escape economic hardship and difficult pasts. The jury's decision left Tasha Kendrick, Kendrick's mom, in tears. “I’m just thankful for a lot of things right now,” she said. “My emotions are all over the place right now." RELATED STORY | Judge removed from gang and racketeering case against rapper Young Thug Prosecutors said Williams and two others founded Young Slime Life in association with the national Bloods gang in 2012. The 33-year-old artist also has a record label called Young Stoner Life. Kendrick is featured on two of the most popular songs from the label’s compilation album Slime Language 2, “Take It to Trial” and “Slatty,” as well as Young Thug’s “Slime Sh-t," which prosecutors presented as evidence. Williams entered a risky “blind” plea — meaning he pleaded guilty without an agreement on his sentence — in October. Williams’ lawyer said he felt like they were winning, but the rapper complained that sitting in court felt like “hell” and wanted to go home to his family. Judge Paige Reese Whitaker let him out of jail on probation with tight restrictions, including a 10-year ban from metro Atlanta except for certain occasions. The trial shook Atlanta’s rap scene. Williams grew up in a violent Atlanta housing project and became a highly successful artist who added his own melodic twist to the modern Southern trap sound he helped popularize. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville was removed from the case in July after he met with prosecutors and a state witness without defense attorneys present. Kendrick’s attorney Doug Weinstein said defendants got a “fair trial” once Whitaker took over. Among other things, she reprimanded the prosecution for being disorganized and not sharing evidence. During closings, Stillwell’s defense attorney Max Schardt sought to cast doubts on the gang investigators and other state witnesses. Several alleged YSL members testified they had lied to police to stay out of prison. Schardt said officers had threatened them with long prison sentences if they didn’t say the right thing. Prosecutors said those witnesses were honest with police but lied on the stand, in front of the people they had “snitched” on. They said their statements were corroborated by other evidence such as songs and social media posts where they said defendants were “bragging about murder.” RELATED STORY | Why Young Thug's popularity is making his court case so complex Prosecutors threw together lyrics, social media posts and irrelevant evidence to “see what sticks,” Weinstein argued, but did not prove they were connected to a criminal enterprise. While defendants did commit crimes in the past, Schardt said during closings, it was to make money for themselves in communities stripped of economic opportunity — not to advance a gang. And music let some of them move on. “As a whole, we know the struggles that these communities have had,” Schardt said. “A sad, tacit acceptance that it’s either rap, prison or death.” Both defense attorneys said Kendrick and Stillwell have other pending charges but hope to get them released from jail as soon as possible. Stillwell is not “blind to the fact that he is getting a second chance at life," Schardt said. Weinstein said Kendrick, who is close friends with Young Thug, was laser-focused on his music career before the state pulled him back into the criminal justice system. “I’m so happy that he can kind of draw a line in the sand now,” Weinstein said. “All of this is behind him. He can get on with his life and not worry about this nonsense.”Empowered Funds LLC Has $769,000 Stock Holdings in Peoples Bancorp of North Carolina, Inc. The north’s ‘transport minister’ Erhan Arikli on Tuesday night called for ‘parliamentary’ elections to be held “as soon as possible” . Speaking to Genc TV, he built on earlier comments made by himself and other ‘ministers’ regarding the year ahead, saying “there are problems coming in 2025 and urgent and strict policies are needed”. He then added, “let’s have elections as soon as possible. We will talk about this in the coming days. What we could not do is more than what we did. We will evaluate this within the government.” He was then keen to differentiate himself and his party the YDP from the UBP, the north’s three-party ruling coalition’s largest party. “ They say a government partner should not complain, but I am not just an ordinary UBP MP or minister . I am a partner in this government. My party will be held accountable when we have elections. I will continue to criticise what I see as wrong,” he said. He added, “no one should take offence, I will also discuss this in cabinet. There is a habit from the past whereby people say, ‘the coalition is a whole, no one can speak out’. What has that got to do with anything?” That criticism came in the form of a list of “many deficiencies” in the current ‘government’ as described by Arikli. “Information technology laws, election laws, public service reforms ... there are 70 or 80 pieces of legislation we could not put forward . We need to sit down and talk again when the budget is passed. The people will ask to hold us to account in an election,” he said. Arikli’s comments build on statements he made last week, when he said there would be a “ great benefit ” for the ruling coalition’s three parties to hold elections as soon as possible because “2025 will be a very difficult year for all of us, especially for the government”. Those comments came just a day after the ruling coalition’s ‘parliamentary’ majority fell to just six, after ‘MP’ Hasan Tosunoglu left the ruling coalition’s other party, the DP . Tosunoglu was one of three ‘MPs’ from the DP elected at the ‘parliamentary’ elections in January 2022 and remained on the backbenches throughout the almost three years since then, but spoke of a disillusionment with his party’s direction. He said his party has become “silent, apolitical, and without an attitude”, with the party’s political platform in recent years having grown ever closer to that of the UBP. Arikli is also not the only ‘minister’ who has spoken of tough times ahead for Turkish Cypriots, with ‘economy minister’ Olgun Amcaoglu having said last month that 2025 will be “ much more difficult ” economically than previous years.

With Christmas just around the bend, many Brits are scratching their heads over what stocking fillers to get for their loved ones. If you're in a similar predicament, consider snagging an during Amazon's Black Friday sale. Last year, I gifted an to a family member who was quite technophobic. By "technophobic", I mean someone who needed assistance with online shopping on platforms like eBay and basic computer troubleshooting such as printing tickets or accessing emails. I decided it was high time they got acquainted with 21st-century tech and so, an Echo Dot became their present. I anticipated a polite thank you, a brief trial run over the festive period, and then silence. However, a few weeks after Christmas, I received a call asking how to set up Amazon Music. To my surprise, they had fallen head over heels for the device, enjoying its music-playing capabilities and the fun of posing various questions to it while pottering about the house. Currently, as part of its Black Friday sale. The product has also garnered rave reviews from other purchasers, reports . One buyer commented: "Out of the box, this product feels extremely quality. It has a nice weight to it and the materials used feel premium. Setup was extremely easy using the app and only took five minutes." Some owners however have expressed frustration with the device, particularly with the voice control feature. One user wrote: "Bought it to play BBC Sounds. It just will not. Have tried everything possible that is suggested to rectify the problem but to no avail. "Have linked to my BBC account, have had emails to confirm, have re-set, unplugged, re-plugged, emailed BBC, unlinked and re-linked, re-routed and un-routed and still the bloody thing, when asked to play BBC Radio 4 or any BBC radio programme comes up with some random American radio station or a Kids Skills something or other or, even more annoyingly says 'this is not supported'. "Driven to distraction and three hours of mounting temper and frustration, I shall just go back to my radio, and Alexa and her annoying little ball of pulsing lights can go back from whence she came. As someone said - a very expensive kitchen timer! ". However, other users have had a more positive experience, finding the device to be extremely handy for general questions, playing music, and more. If you're not sold on the Echo Dot, there are alternative options available, such as the Echo Pop for £18.99 at Currys, or the stylish Roberts Revival Petite 2 DAB/DAB+/FM/BT Radio for £92 at Debenhams.23 of the best gifts our editors are buying that are all on sale for Cyber Monday

Saquon Barkley becomes ninth running back to rush for 2,000 yards in a season

How Washington outsider Jimmy Carter wooed voters tired of Vietnam and WatergateNEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s recent dinner with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his visit to Paris for the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral were not just exercises in policy and diplomacy. They were also prime trolling opportunities for Trump. Throughout his first term in the White House and during his campaign to return, Trump has spun out countless provocative, antagonizing and mocking statements. There were his belittling nicknames for political opponents, his impressions of other political figures and the plentiful memes he shared on social media. Now that's he's preparing to return to the Oval Office, Trump is back at it, and his trolling is attracting more attention — and eyerolls. On Sunday, Trump turned a photo of himself seated near a smiling first lady Jill Biden at the Notre Dame ceremony into a social media promo for his new perfume and cologne line, with the tag line, “A fragrance your enemies can’t resist!” The first lady’s office declined to comment. When Trudeau hastily flew to Florida to meet with Trump last month over the president-elect's threat to impose a 25% tax on all Canadian products entering the U.S., the Republican tossed out the idea that Canada become the 51st U.S. state. The Canadians passed off the comment as a joke, but Trump has continued to play up the dig, including in a post Tuesday morning on his social media network referring to the prime minister as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.” After decades as an entertainer and tabloid fixture, Trump has a flair for the provocative that is aimed at attracting attention and, in his most recent incarnation as a politician, mobilizing fans. He has long relished poking at his opponents, both to demean and minimize them and to delight supporters who share his irreverent comments and posts widely online and cheer for them in person. Trump, to the joy of his fans, first publicly needled Canada on his social media network a week ago when he posted an AI-generated image that showed him standing on a mountain with a Canadian flag next to him and the caption “Oh Canada!” After his latest post, Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Tuesday: “It sounds like we’re living in a episode of South Park." Trudeau said earlier this week that when it comes to Trump, “his approach will often be to challenge people, to destabilize a negotiating partner, to offer uncertainty and even sometimes a bit of chaos into the well established hallways of democracies and institutions and one of the most important things for us to do is not to freak out, not to panic.” Even Thanksgiving dinner isn't a trolling-free zone for Trump's adversaries. On Thanksgiving Day, Trump posted a movie clip from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” with President Joe Biden and other Democrats’ faces superimposed on the characters in a spoof of the turkey-carving scene. The video shows Trump appearing to explode out of the turkey in a swirl of purple sparks, with the former president stiffly dancing to one of his favorite songs, Village People’s “Y.M.C.A." In his most recent presidential campaign, Trump mocked Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, refusing to call his GOP primary opponent by his real name and instead dubbing him “Ron DeSanctimonious.” He added, for good measure, in a post on his Truth Social network: “I will never call Ron DeSanctimonious ‘Meatball’ Ron, as the Fake News is insisting I will.” As he campaigned against Biden, Trump taunted him in online posts and with comments and impressions at his rallies, deriding the president over his intellect, his walk, his golf game and even his beach body. After Vice President Kamala Harris took over Biden's spot as the Democratic nominee, Trump repeatedly suggested she never worked at McDonalds while in college. Trump, true to form, turned his mocking into a spectacle by appearing at a Pennsylvania McDonalds in October, when he manned the fries station and held an impromptu news conference from the restaurant drive-thru. Trump’s team thinks people should get a sense of humor. “President Trump is a master at messaging and he’s always relatable to the average person, whereas many media members take themselves too seriously and have no concept of anything else other than suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome,” said Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director. “President Trump will Make America Great Again and we are getting back to a sense of optimism after a tumultuous four years.” Though both the Biden and Harris campaigns created and shared memes and launched other stunts to respond to Trump's taunts, so far America’s neighbors to the north are not taking the bait. “I don’t think we should necessarily look on Truth Social for public policy,” Miller said. Gerald Butts, a former top adviser to Trudeau and a close friend, said Trump brought up the 51st state line to Trudeau repeatedly during Trump’s first term in office. “Oh God,” Butts said Tuesday, “At least a half dozen times.” “This is who he is and what he does. He’s trying to destabilize everybody and make people anxious,” Butts said. “He’s trying to get people on the defensive and anxious and therefore willing to do things they wouldn’t otherwise entertain if they had their wits about them. I don’t know why anybody is surprised by it.” Gillies reported from Toronto. Associated Press writer Darlene Superville contributed to this report.

The seabed has increasingly emerged as a significant and contested domain in recent years, drawing global attention due to unprecedented events and developments. In 2022 alone, incidents such as the breaking of the Svalbard subsea communication cable, the explosion of the Nord Stream 1 & 2 subsea gas pipelines and the breakage of the SHEFA-2 communication cable underscored the vulnerability of underwater critical infrastructure (UCI). This trend persisted into 2023, with similar disruptions affecting subsea communication cables, such as the one connecting Taiwan. Even in 2024, Pakistan had only gone through four incidents of submarine cables, which cost the nation millions of rupees. These events have not only highlighted the fragile nature of UCIs, including oil and gas pipelines, power transmission cables and submarine communication systems, but they have also spurred significant political, military, and scholarly interest in what is now termed "seabed warfare." Historically, seabed warfare is not a new concept. Navies have long conducted operations on the seabed, particularly during the Cold War, when the U.S. and the Soviet Union developed extensive acoustic surveillance systems for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and strategic intelligence. Notably, the U.S. Navy's Operation IVY BELLS in the 1970s involved tapping Soviet subsea cables, yielding critical intelligence. Seabed warfare has evolved into a complex, multi-dimensional field, incorporating advanced technologies and strategies to protect and disrupt Underwater Critical Infrastructure (UCIs), reflecting its growing importance in defensive and offensive naval operations. The last two decades have witnessed a major boom in the energy distribution sector through the seabed. Various oil and gas pipelines run on the seabed in different oceans, which ensures energy supply among other countries and regions; they hold vital economic importance. Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines transport Russian gas to Europe and run on the seabed of the Baltic Sea. Within Europe, there is also a network of underwater gas pipelines that transport Norwegian gas to the U.K., France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Poland. These gas pipelines run on the seabed of the North and Baltic Seas . In the East, the subsea Ichthys Export Pipeline (Timor Sea) transports gas from the Ichthys field to mainland Australia. Yacheng 13-1 gas pipeline transports gas from the Yacheng gas field to mainland China, and the list goes on. Subsea oil pipelines are also being extensively used to transport oil from offshore terminals to land. According to surveys, the web of 2,381 operational oil and gas pipelines spread across 162 nations back in 2020. Similarly, offshore drilling for new energy resources on the seabed of different oceans around the world is also witnessing a boom. Keeping in view projects such as the Trans Caspian, subsea energy transportation is likely to have an upward trend. Subsea communication cables also hold significant importance for the world’s economic growth and stability. More than 97% of the world’s internet data flows through the ocean. Let alone subsea communication cables enable money transactions worth $10 trillion per day across the world. Any disruption to these cables is considered socio-economically catastrophic. Politically, growing subsea connectivity and dependency on energy and information are being considered lucrative foreign policy tools. Subsea pipelines and cables have gained unprecedented strategic importance. Safe operations of subsea pipelines and cables are crucial for socio-economic stability, but at the same time, their blockage and disruption can impose significant strategic effects. New international relations (IR) terms such as ‘pipeline diplomacy’ reflect the same political thought. For military strategists, seabed warfare capability to protect (defensive) and even disrupt (offensive) subsea pipelines and cables has become a priority area. Seabed warfare is inherently attractive for the hybrid military strategy; therefore, it has great potential to grow in "no war-no peace" and "low-intensity conflict" environments. Based on an analysis of seabed operations in naval history, recent events and development strategies of different navies, the scope of emerging seabed warfare can be divided into benign, defensive and offensive operations. Benign operations will be mainly aimed at oceanographic research, search and rescue (SAR) and salvage operations. Defensive operations will focus on the protection of UCIs. Emerging concepts like Seabed-to-Space Situational Awareness (S3A), Distributed Remote Sensing (DRS), the Great Underwater Wall, etc., will define the framework of defensive seabed operations. Similarly, offensive operations will focus on the destruction or disruption of UCIs and the tapping of digital data flowing through subsea communication cables. Technological advancements enabled seabed access more than ever. Modern hydro-mechanical systems, advanced electronics and artificial intelligence are enabling the maritime industry to produce ships, submarines and UUVs (uncrewed underwater vehicles) that would carry out activities on the seabed. So where research, exploration and productive machines can go, there will also be military vehicles accessing the seabed to turn it into a new battlefield. Seabed warfare is a technologically intensive field. Artificial intelligence is reckoned to be the backbone of all enablers of seabed warfare. Enablers of seabed warfare can be divided into three categories: launch platforms (submarines, ships, extra-large UUVs), execution vehicles (UUVs, ROVs, and AUVs) and remote sensors (underwater buoys, ocean data buoys, and air/satellite-based sensors). It is interesting to highlight that there is significant technological progress in each category. The Belgorod Class Submarine (Russian Navy) is designed to address this requirement for seabed operations. Though U.S. submarines have the capability to carry out similar operations at present, it has decided to develop the VA SSW (Modified Virginia Subsea and Seabed Warfare) submarine. The same trend is followed even by conventional submarines; the latest Swedish A-26 Class submarines have specific features such as rapid and straightforward bottoming and UUV launch and control capability for seabed warfare. The Italian NFS (Near Future Submarine) project and the German-Norwegian Type 212 CD have similar claims. UUV technology is considered the linchpin of seabed warfare. A long list of special ships will be mainly used for benign and defensive seabed operations. UUVs are becoming more capable in terms of operating depths, endurance, power and propulsion day by day. UUVs are the world’s leading defense companies' top priority. Data from remote sensors such as underwater hydrophone networks, ocean buoys and even satellites can be fused together for robust surveillance. As seabed warfare continues to evolve, driven by rapid technological advancements and strategic competition, it is becoming an increasingly sophisticated and high-stakes arena. The development of seabed warfare capabilities, such as the Russian Belgorod Class Submarine and the U.S. Virginia-class submarines, reflects the growing emphasis on controlling this new battlefield. Until clear international rules are established to govern seabed warfare, the potential for conflict in this domain remains significant, with implications for global security and stability. Moreover, in the context of Pakistan, a country with a strategic vicinity and growing dependence on undersea cables, it is imperative to assess its preparedness and resilience against emerging threats of seabed warfare.

Is ‘SNL’ New This Weekend? Here’s Everything to KnowOttawa police 'Purse Project': Need for feminine hygiene products greater than ever

WASHINGTON (AP) — One year after the , U.S. Capitol attack, Attorney General Merrick Garland the Justice Department was committed to holding accountable all perpetrators “at any level” for “the assault on our democracy.” That bold declaration won't apply to at least one person: Donald Trump. Special counsel Jack Smith's move on Monday to abandon the against Trump means jurors will likely never decide whether the president-elect is criminally responsible for his attempts to cling to power after losing the 2020 campaign. The decision to walk away from the election charges and the separate against Trump marks an abrupt end of the Justice Department’s unprecedented legal effort that once threatened his liberty but appears only to have galvanized his supporters. The abandonment of the cases accusing Trump of endangering American democracy and national security does away with the most serious legal threats he was facing as he returns to the White House. It was the culmination of a monthslong defense effort to delay the proceedings at every step and use the criminal allegations to Trump's political advantage, putting the final word in the hands of voters instead of jurors. “We always knew that the rich and powerful had an advantage, but I don’t think we would have ever believed that somebody could walk away from everything,” said Stephen Saltzburg, a George Washington University law professor and former Justice Department official. “If there ever was a Teflon defendant, that’s Donald Trump.” While prosecutors left the door open to the possibility that federal charges could be re-filed against Trump after he leaves office, that seems unlikely. Meanwhile, Trump's presidential victory has thrown into question the future of the two state criminal cases against him in New York and Georgia. Trump was supposed to be sentenced on Tuesday after his , but it's possible the sentencing could be delayed until after Trump leaves office, and the defense is pushing to dismiss the case altogether. Smith's team stressed that their decision to abandon the federal cases was not a reflection of the merit of the charges, but an acknowledgement that they could not move forward under longstanding Justice Department policy that says sitting presidents cannot face Trump's presidential victory set “at odds two fundamental and compelling national interests: On the one hand, the Constitution’s requirement that the President must not be unduly encumbered in fulfilling his weighty responsibilities . . . and on the other hand, the Nation’s commitment to the rule of law,” prosecutors wrote in court papers. The move just weeks after Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris underscores the immense personal stake Trump had in the campaign in which he turned his legal woes into a political rallying cry. Trump accused prosecutors of bringing the charges in a bid to keep him out of the White House, and he promised revenge on his perceived enemies if he won a second term. “If Donald J. Trump had lost an election, he may very well have spent the rest of his life in prison,” Vice President-elect JD Vance, wrote in a social media post on Monday. “These prosecutions were always political. Now it’s time to ensure what happened to President Trump never happens in this country again.” After the Jan. 6 attack by Trump supporters that left more than 100 police officers injured, Republican leader Mitch McConnell and several other Republicans said it was up to the justice system to hold Trump accountable. The Jan. 6 case brought last year in Washington alleged an increasingly desperate criminal conspiracy to subvert the will of voters after Trump's 2020 loss, accusing Trump of using the angry mob of supporters that attacked the Capitol as “a tool” in his campaign to pressure then-Vice President and obstruct the certification of Democrat Joe Biden's victory. Hundreds of Jan. 6 rioters — many of whom have said they felt called to Washington by Trump — have pleaded guilty or been convicted by juries of federal charges at the same courthouse where Trump was supposed to stand trial last year. As the trial date neared, officials at the courthouse that sits within view of the Capitol were busy making plans for the crush of reporters expected to cover the historic case. But Trump's argument that he from prosecution quickly tied up the case in appeals all the way up to the Supreme Court. The high court ruled in July that , and sent the case back to the trial court to decide which allegations could move forward. But the case was dismissed before the trial court could got a chance to do so. The other indictment brought in Florida accused Trump of at his Mar-a-Lago estate sensitive documents on nuclear capabilities, enlisting aides and lawyers to help him hide records demanded by investigators and cavalierly showing off a Pentagon “plan of attack” and classified map. But U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon . Smith appealed to the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, but abandoned that appeal on Monday. Smith's team said it would continue its fight in the appeals court to revive charges against Trump's two co-defendants because “no principle of temporary immunity applies to them.” In New York, jurors spent weeks last spring hearing evidence in a state case alleging a Trump scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through who said the two had sex. New York prosecutors recently expressed openness to delaying sentencing until after Trump's second term, while Trump's lawyers are fighting to have the conviction dismissed altogether. In Georgia, a trial while Trump is in office seems unlikely in a state case charging him and more than a dozen others with conspiring to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state. The case has been on hold since an appeals court agreed to review whether to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis over her with the special prosecutor she had hired to lead the case. Iowa followed its lowest-scoring game of the season with a 110-point eruption the next time out. The Hawkeyes will be one week removed from that scorching effort when they host Northwestern in Tuesday's Big Ten opener in Iowa City, but rust won't be the only roadblock for a potential repeat showing. Iowa (6-1) also is bracing for stiffer competition in conference play while navigating an injury to Seydou Traore. The reserve forward suffered a sprained ankle midway through the first half of a 110-77 home rout of South Carolina Upstate on Nov. 26. Also missing frontcourt contributors Even Brauns and Cooper Koch, the Hawkeyes still flexed their resilience and depth. Brock Harding notched a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds and Owen Freeman netted 17 points as five Iowa players scored in double figures. "Coming off a loss, going into Thanksgiving break here, we've got a couple days off coming, it'd be easy to kinda (think), ‘All right, let's relax for this one, guys sit out,'" Harding said. "But I think we really locked in." Northwestern (6-2) overcame 40.8 percent shooting to defeat UNLV 66-61 in the third-place game of the Arizona Tip-Off on Friday in Tempe, Ariz. Brooks Barnhizer, a preseason All-Big Ten pick who was sidelined by a foot injury during the Wildcats' first four games, had team highs of 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists. He has scored at least 20 points in three of four games. Northwestern limited UNLV to a 42.1 percent effort from the floor. Matthew Nicholson propelled the defense with two of the Wildcats' seven steals to go with two blocks. "We're a defensive-minded team and, you know, our identity is just getting stops," Barnhizer said. "Everything else will take care of itself. So, the older guys were trying to come out here and do that tonight and I think we did a pretty good job of it." Strong ‘D' helped Northwestern's ball movement, too, as the Wildcats assisted on 15 of 20 made field goals. Northwestern went 8-for-18 (44.4 percent) from long range to improve to 3-0 this season when connecting on 40 percent of its 3-point shots or better. --Field Level MediaPREP ROUNDUP: Lady Devils Drop Two In Knoxville

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday walked investors through next week's Federal Reserve meeting and big earnings from General Mills , Darden Restaurants , Nike and more. > Philadelphia news 24/7: Watch NBC10 free wherever you are On Monday, the trial between Qualcomm and Arm Holdings begins. Cramer said a victory for Arm Holdings would take away Qualcomm's license to use some important chips in cellphones and laptops. He added that the smart move is to bet on a settlement, which he believes would be good for everyone. Retail sales numbers are out Tuesday morning, on the eve of the Fed meeting, and Cramer said there will be hot debates around the numbers as investors aim to figure out whether consumers rallied on Black Friday amid a shortened timeframe between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Fed meets Wednesday and is expected to cut interest rates by a quarter percent. Cramer said the fixation on the Fed can distract from long-term performance and lead to bad decisions from investors. Wednesday also brings earnings from General Mills, Micron and Lennar . Cramer said he's worried about GM as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s healthy-eating approach could put a major source of the company's profits under fire. Micron could keep rising after shares rallied on Friday, but Lennar may have a harder time as housing stocks fell following Toll Brothers ' sub-par earnings, Cramer said. Darden Restaurants, Nike and FedEx report on Thursday. Cramer said Darden's high prices might get pushback and the company needs to entice more consumers who are looking for the best value, while Nike needs to bring more innovation to compete with Adidas , Deckers ' Hoka and On Holding . With transport numbers on the rise, Cramer said he's more hopeful for FedEx amid the company's efforts to cut costs and improve gross margins. The personal consumption expenditures index is out on Friday, and Cramer said the Fed's decision may bring a lot of negative discussion if the number runs hot. Former US president Jimmy Carter dies aged 100A 39-year-old teacher and girls’ soccer coach in Arcadia was charged Friday with possessing hundreds of images of child pornography, prosecutors announced, and authorities say they’re concerned he may have victimized girls in his care. Justin Akio Yasutake, of Pasadena, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of being in possession of child or youth pornography. According to prosecutors, Yasutake knowingly had possession of images that showed child sexual abuse, including 10 or more images of a prepubescent minor or a minor who was under the age of 12, according to the charging documents. Authorities received a tip about Yasutake on Nov. 11, according to the Arcadia Police Department. The tipster said that someone sent suspicious messages over social media asking about juvenile girls. The person also sent lewd videos. Police used a search warrant to probe his electronic devices on Nov. 12 as part of their investigation. He was eventually arrested. “Child pornography will not be tolerated ... and individuals who exploit children will be vigorously prosecuted, especially when they are educators who hold positions of trust in the community,” said Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman in a statement. Authorities believe there could be additional victims and are asking anyone with information about the case to contact authorities. Yasutake has been a girls’ soccer coach for about 20 years and has been possibly exploiting girls during that time, the Arcadia Police Department announced in a news release . Anyone with information about the case can contact the Arcadia Police Department at (626) 574-5188. Anonymous tips can be made by phone at (800) 222-8477 or online at lacrimestoppers.org.

Slot’s impact has been equally evident in Europe, where the Merseyside club has dominated the Champions League, securing victory in all five of their league phase matches. With the January transfer window approaching, Liverpool are reportedly targeting Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong to strengthen their squad and sustain their dominance across all competitions. Liverpool make offer for Frenkie de Jong According to a report by , the Dutch international is seen as an ideal successor to Ryan Gravenberch, who is drawing strong interest from Real Madrid. It was that the Reds could make an offer for de Jong and as per this report, the Reds want to sign the midfielder and have made an offer worth €40m as they look to take advantage of the player’s current situation with the Spanish side. The report adds that Arne Slot has personally advised the club to sign him. De Jong has struggled with injuries at Barcelona The 27-year-old endured a difficult previous season, with an ankle injury sidelining him for the majority of the campaign, resulting in 47 missed games for both club and country. Under Barcelona’s new coach Hansi Flick, De Jong has made 11 appearances this season but only two starts, highlighting his diminished role within a crowded midfield. Since joining Barcelona, he has made 224 appearances for them, scoring 18 and assisting 22. His overall tally across all competitions and levels is 35 goals and 48 assists in 385 games. ( ) He has been a long-term Manchester United target as well under former manager Erik ten Hag and as per a recent report, it is suggested that . Slot’s vision of a possession-focused, dynamic midfield makes De Jong an ideal fit. Known for his ability to control the tempo, break defensive lines, and maintain composure under pressure, he would complement Liverpool’s attacking philosophy perfectly. Should the move materialise, De Jong’s arrival could mark a pivotal step in Liverpool’s quest for domestic and European success while providing him a platform to re-establish himself as one of the world’s best midfielders.

The Reform UK leader pushed back against reports suggesting that legal action would be the next step, saying he would make a decision in the next couple of days about his response if there is no apology for the “crazy conspiracy theory”. Mr Farage also said the party has “opened up our systems” to media outlets, including The Daily Telegraph and The Financial Times, in the interests of “full transparency to verify that our numbers are correct”. His remarks came after Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch accused Mr Farage of “fakery” in response to Reform claiming they had surpassed the Tories in signed-up members. Mrs Badenoch said Reform’s counter was “coded to tick up automatically”. A digital counter on the Reform website showed a membership tally before lunchtime on Boxing Day ticking past the 131,680 figure declared by the Conservative Party during its leadership election earlier this year. Mr Farage, on whether he was threatening legal action or not, told the PA news agency: “I haven’t threatened anything. I’ve just said that unless I get an apology, I will take some action. “I haven’t said whether it’s legal or anything.” He added: “All I’ve said is I want an apology. If I don’t get an apology, I will take action. “I will decide in the next couple of days what that is. So I’ve not specified what it is.” Mr Farage, on the move to make membership data available to media organisations, said: “We feel our arguments are fully validated. “She (Mrs Badenoch) has put out this crazy conspiracy theory and she needs to apologise.” On why Mrs Badenoch had reacted as she did, Mr Farage said: “I would imagine she was at home without anybody advising her and was just angry.” Mr Farage, in a statement issued on social media site X, also said: “The accusations of fraud and dishonesty made against me yesterday were disgraceful. “Today we opened up our systems to The Telegraph, Spectator, Sky News and FT in the interests of full transparency to verify that our data is correct. “I am now demanding Kemi Badenoch apologises.” A Conservative Party source claimed Mr Farage was “rattled” that his Boxing Day “publicity stunt is facing serious questions”. They added: “Like most normal people around the UK, Kemi is enjoying Christmas with her family and looking forward to taking on the challenges of renewing the Conservative Party in the New Year.” Mrs Badenoch, in a series of messages posted on X on Thursday, said: “Farage doesn’t understand the digital age. This kind of fakery gets found out pretty quickly, although not before many are fooled.” There were 131,680 Conservative members eligible to vote during the party’s leadership election to replace Rishi Sunak in the autumn. Mrs Badenoch claimed in her thread that “the Conservative Party has gained thousands of new members since the leadership election”. Elsewhere, Mr Farage described Elon Musk as a “bloody hero” and said he believes the US billionaire can help attract younger voters to Reform. Tech entrepreneur Mr Musk met Mr Farage earlier this month at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, amid rumours of a possible donation to either Mr Farage or Reform. Mr Farage told The Daily Telegraph newspaper: “The shades, the bomber jacket, the whole vibe. Elon makes us cool – Elon is a huge help to us with the young generation, and that will be the case going on and, frankly, that’s only just starting. “Reform only wins the next election if it gets the youth vote. The youth vote is the key. Of course, you need voters of all ages, but if you get a wave of youth enthusiasm you can change everything. “And I think we’re beginning to get into that zone – we were anyway, but Elon makes the whole task much, much easier. And the idea that politics can be cool, politics can be fun, politics can be real – Elon helps us with that mission enormously.”

The Australian sharemarket is tipped to open stronger after a quiet post-holiday session on Wall Street, where the latest data on jobless claims did little to change the minds of investors on where interest rates are headed next. The ASX 200 futures were up 0.2 per cent to 8,217 points as of 7.50 AEDT, while the Australian dollar was down 0.3 per cent to 62.19 US cents. Overnight, US stocks struggled to gain traction after a rally that sent the S&P 500 to its best Christmas Eve performance since 1974, according to data compiled by Bespoke Investment Group. With major European markets closed, volume in the US equity gauge was well below the average of the past month. Volumes will remain muted.” To Jonathan Krinsky at BTIG, the market can continue to make upside progress into year-end, hitting a fresh all-time high for the S&P 500 above 6,100. Looking ahead to January, however, he thinks volatility will re-emerge. “If the S&P 500 does make new highs, there are going to be massive divergences in breadth and momentum, which is another red flag as we get into January,” he noted. Meanwhile, Brent crude price slipped 0.6 per cent to $US73.12/barrel on news that US crude exports to China had slipped by almost half this year as shifts in the nation’s economy weighed on demand, and it bought more barrels from other countries, including Russia and Iran.
