A measure to bar Montana Rep. Zooey Zephyr, the state’s first transgender legislator, from using the women’s restroom at the State Capitol failed to pass the House Rules Committee on Tuesday, with several Republicans voting against it. The measure, introduced by Republican Rep. Jerry Schillinger, would have required state legislators to use the restrooms of their birth sexes. The measure “says what probably shouldn’t need to be said and puts into rules what probably shouldn’t need to be put into rules,” Schillinger said Tuesday at a meeting of the Joint House and Senate Rules Committees ahead of Montana’s next legislative session in January. The proposal, which needed support from a majority of both committees to pass, failed, with the Senate committee voting 11-7 in favor and the House committee voting 10-12 against. Zephyr — who drew international attention and became a nationally recognized face among the LGBTQ community last year when she was censured in the Montana Legislature — thanked her colleagues who voted against the measure in a statement on social media. “I’m happy to see that this proposed ban failed and am grateful for my colleagues—particularly my republican colleagues—who recognized this as a distraction from the work we were elected to do,” Zephyr wrote on X . “I’m ready to represent my constituents and look forward to working on behalf of the people of Montana.” Rep. David Bedey was among the four Republicans who voted against the measure, arguing that the Legislature’s rules are intended to allow the body to act on behalf of Montanans in an efficient manner. “This particular action will have the effect of making people famous in the national news and will not contribute to the effective conduct of our business,” Bedey said before Tuesday’s vote . He added that restroom access wasn’t an issue for the female legislators he spoke with in the last legislative session. Rep. Brad Barker, also a Republican, agreed with Bedey, saying the issue was becoming “a distraction.” Republican Rep. Jedediah Hinkle supported the measure, saying that the Legislature has only one trans legislator but that it could have more in the future. “I think it’s time this body addresses this issue now as they are addressing it nationally,” he said. “We need to set that precedent right now that women have their spaces and they need to be comfortable in those spaces, and I think we ought to stand up for them.” Hinkle appeared to be alluding to a recent debate in the U.S. Capitol following Delaware’s election of Sarah McBride, who will become the country’s first openly transgender member of Congress next month. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced a resolution last month to prohibit any lawmakers and House employees from “using single-sex facilities other than those corresponding to their biological sex.” In remarks that misgendered her, Mace told reporters that the measure was, indeed, intended to target McBride, adding that she is “absolutely 100% going to stand in the way of any man who wants to be in a women’s restroom, in our locker rooms, in our changing rooms.” She added, “I will be there fighting you every step of the way.” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said he supports Mace’s effort , though his statement of support doesn’t formally change the rules package for the new congressional session, which starts in January. On Nov. 20, McBride responded to Mace’s proposal and Johnson’s response, writing on X: “I’m not here to fight about bathrooms. I’m here to fight for Delawareans and to bring down costs facing families. Like all members, I will follow the rules as outlined by Speaker Johnson, even if I disagree with them. She added, “This effort to distract from the real issues facing this country hasn’t distracted me over the last several days, as I’ve remained hard at work preparing to represent the greatest state in the union come January.” In the days following McBride’s statement, Zephyr encouraged her not to “cede ground.” “When we see policies targeting trans women just trying to live their lives in the restroom, trying to play sports with their friends — that is not where the hate stops from the right,” Zephyr said in an interview with Scripps News at the time. “That hate is on display at every moment, which is why it’s important for us to resist these efforts to target our community.”
I'M A Celebrity suffered a very awkward tech blunder after Melvin's exit left Ant McPartlin frustrated. Presenter Ant , 49, couldn't contain his annoyance when a voicenote from Carol Vorderman, 63, was not played aloud for evicted star Melvin, 44, to hear. Though it was clearly audible to both Ant and Dec through their earpieces, and to viewers at home, the Radio 1 DJ was left out of the loop. In a flirty message, Carol teased: "Melvin, I'm blushing redder than that dress I'm wearing [inaudible], but I'll be rooting for you all the way through, see you on the outside." As it played, Ant looked on at the crew, saying: "We can't hear it on the floor. We can't hear it. "We can't hear it down here, I'm afraid, we've got it in our ear but you can't hear it. I'll play it for you privately." Dec chimed in: "Basically, she's blushing. We'll catch up with a bit more of that." Melvin was left stunned, asking: "Serious?" The London-native has made no secret of his crush on the Countdown legend. And, last week, The Sun told how he secretly attempted to get Carol's attention before going into the jungle. According to colleagues at the BBC, he asked Producer Tom to help him win her over - with an impressive idea. Host Danni Diston exclusively told us: "None of us knew about Melvin's crush on Carol, but apparently Producer Tom, who works at Radio One, did. "He helped Melvin DM Carol Vorderman in Welsh because obviously she's a Welsh queen." Danni added: "Whether or not she replied, I don't know. "I would like to see them go on a date. I think they'd be a cute couple. "I know she's done the jungle already, but do you reckon she'd go back in and surprise him? I don't think she would, but it would be great." In a recent installment, Melvin admitted fancying his "dream woman" Carol - and even asked her out live on TV. He acted out his desired 'date' with Carol to campmates - after admitting he'd been too shy to say hello to the former TV presenter. Carol reacted to the bizarre moment Melvin did role play with Tulisa in camp, as he asked Carol out to a Thai restaurant. In her first voicenote sent in to ITV2's Unpacked, Carol said: "Melvin, or should I say Jungle Man.. Melvin Vorderman... It sounds the same to me. "Right, question. Have you been spying on me because just last night I had a little Thai food. "I had pad Thai, quite a lot of it, with a little chicken satay on the side. "It was delicious, Jungle Man. "Anyway keep doing what you're doing. You're doing a brilliant job. See you on the other side." Melvin hosts the mid-morning show on BBC Radio 1 alongside his pal Rickie Haywood-Williams and Charlie Hedges. They also host the famous Live Lounge together. From January, his colleague Danni is moving to a new slot on BBC Radio One with her co-host Sam MacGregor. Sam and Danni, who previously held the Weekend Breakfast slot, will now host an afternoon show that runs from Friday to Sunday, 1-4pm. i'm A Celebrity is back for its 24th series, with a batch of famous faces living in the Aussie jungle. Richard Coles - Former BBC radio host the Rev Richard Coles is a late arrival on I’m A Celebrity , and he's ready to spill the beans on his former employer. The loneliness epidemic is becoming a real problem for many people. Multiple organizations have conducted studies consistently showing that 60% of the population is lonely. Loneliness is a lot higher in people with ASD and other neurodivergences. The good news is that there are new opportunities for people with autism who are struggling with loneliness. One of the many ways that they can get support is through using an AI Girlfriend or boyfriend. AI companions may help them find immediate relief from loneliness, as well as potentially help them develop better social skills to find real partners down the line. An AI companion is an online bot that is programmed with AI to act like a boyfriend or girlfriend. People can use AI companions in a number of ways, including: They can have conversations and express their emotions freely with them. They can exchange selfies and have video chats. They can roleplay different scenarios, such as pretending that they are taking them on real dates. They can ask them to provide feedback to help improve their social skills. AI companions have become a lot more common over the last couple of years. There were nearly two million searches for AI girlfriends this past year. A quarter of young men have admitted they have thought about using an AI girlfriend, and 40% of women are open to the idea. Therefore, it shouldn’t be surprising that sites are becoming a lot more popular. Society has finally started to recognize the challenges that neurodivergent people struggle with. An estimated 50 billion people in the United States are neurodivergent in some way. One in 37 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, which is one of the conditions that makes it hardest for people to navigate social situations. Neurodivergent people usually have a lot more difficulty finding a partner than neurotypical people. A study from a Toronto-based organization for people with autism showed that only 9% of autistic adults were married, and only 32.1% had ever had a romantic partner. This is in contrast with 50% of adults without autism who had ever had a partner. AI girlfriend platforms can be the perfect solution for people who are struggling with neurodivergence. They can customize AI partners that are accepting of their condition. AI partners can help them improve their social skills. AI companions can be very easy to use. However, neurodivergent people can get more out of them if they follow the right steps. Here are some tips for using AI companions effectively. Customize a Partner to Align with their Personality Traits and Interests to Get More Targeted Feedback One of the best things about the newer AI companion sites is that they let you customize your companion. This allows you to come up with a partner that you will be compatible with. You will want to think about the traits that you want to have in a partner. This will help you have a more enjoyable experience. Everybody seeking a partner needs to find someone that is compatible with them. Factors of compatibility include shared hobbies, religion, levels of extraversion, education and age. There is a lot of variability in the population among all of these factors, which can make it hard to know how to appeal to a new partner. Autistic people who want to use AI companions to become better at interacting with real people need to understand that everyone has different needs, views and preferences. They should customize their AI companion to match their ideal partner. This will help them get more relevant feedback for finding a compatible partner down the road. Practice Making Small Talk One of the best ways that autistic people can use AI companions is to practice small talk. They can come up with opening lines for conversations and ask their AI companion to share its feedback. They can make adjustments based on this feedback to be better at having authentic conversations with real people. This can make it easier for them to make friends and find romantic partners. Roleplay to Get Better at Handling Dates Autistic people can be great long-term partners, but they may have a hard time navigating the social norms of first dates. This can make it harder for them to enter long-term relationships in the first place. Fortunately, AI companions can help them better understand first dates. They can roleplay different scenarios and tweak their approach to be better aligned with what a regular partner is looking for. Practice Getting Comfortable Sharing Feelings in Socially Acceptable Ways One of the most challenging things that neurodivergent people struggle with is learning to share their feelings appropriately. The appropriate way to express emotions is very dependent on social contexts, such as location and nature of the relationship. Even many neurotypical people have a hard time expressing themselves, so it is understandable that people on the autistic spectrum have a hard time with it. AI companions can help neurodivergent people practice sharing their emotions. The best way to use them for this purpose is to ask them for input based on specific scenarios. For example, you can ask your AI companion whether a certain phrase is appropriate to say to someone on a first date and whether it is acceptable in a long-term relationship. Use Video Chats to Learn More About Body Language and Other Nonverbal Cues Many experts estimate that around 80% of all communication is nonverbal. Unfortunately, nonverbal communication can be particularly difficult for people with autism. You may use video chats with your AI companions to get a better understanding of their body language. You can ask them to explain why they are making certain facial expressions and using a different tone of voice. They will be more patient in helping you learn these cues than a human partner would. Try to Get Insights on New Cultures After Moving Many people have a hard time understanding cultural expectations when moving to a new area. Neurodivergent people have an even harder time adjusting to these changes. Unfortunately, failing to understand cultural differences with social norms can make finding new friends and romantic partners very challenging. Things like gender norms, the appropriateness of hugging someone you just met and the types of activities people do on first dates will all vary based on where you live. Neurodivergent people can use AI companions to help understand these nuances. They will have an easier time relating to people in their new home, which will make finding new friends and romantic partners easier. Practice Social Skills in Safe Environments without the Risk of Real-Life Consequences Learning to interact with real people can be overwhelming for many people. It can be especially difficult for people with ASD or other neurodivergences. Unfortunately, getting things wrong can lead to real problems. You can get fired at work if you make unwanted advances or your date can leave early if you annoy them or make them feel uncomfortable. AI companions can help people with neurodivergence improve their social skills in safe settings. This will help them get more confidence to take the initiative to talk to people in real life. Explore New Interests One of the challenges that a lot of neurodivergent people face with socializing is that they have different interests than most other people. A major organization dedicated to outreach for people affected by autism reports that they have highly focused interests rather than broader interests that are shared by most neurotypical people. They are more likely to be interested in things that are not as mainstream, such as anime. AI companions can be a healthy way for people with autism to become familiar with new hobbies. This can make it easier for them to have conversations about sports, current events and other topics that most people want to talk about. Practice Learning About Red Flags and Setting Boundaries People with autism are at a high risk of getting taken advantage of in the dating world. They often have a harder time recognizing warning signs that a person they are dating may not have their best interests in mind. They also tend to have more trouble setting clear boundaries to protect themselves. AI companions can be helpful for people who are trying to learn how to be safe when going on dates and making new friends. They can ask for a list of tips and their AI partner can help them learn how to protect themselves. Remember that AI Companions Won’t Be Exactly the Same as Human Companions One of the biggest reasons that neurodivergent people use AI companions is to improve their social skills. They can be very helpful in this regard. However, it is important to remember that they are not perfect substitutes for real people. Real people will be more unpredictable, so you need to take some of the things that you learn from AI companions with a grain of salt. You should use the feedback as a starting point to learn how to interact with the average person better, but you can only learn the nuances with real people. Most AI companion services are marketed more heavily towards men. However, many of them have great services for women as well. More women are starting to use AI companions, and some technology writers believe that they will use them even more than men in the near future. It is important to check an AI companion site out before joining it. You will want to make sure that it has the option to create partners based around your target gender. LGBT people with autism can also create AI companions. However, it is important to remember that these AI models rely on machine learning to become better partners over time. Since there are fewer LGBT people using these services, the services may not provide the same quality experience yet. For example, they may not be as familiar with some of the nuances of LGBT dating culture. Fortunately, they are likely to get better over time. There are a lot of sites that connect people with AI companions. It can be tricky to find the best one, but it will be easier if you follow these steps. Try Different AI Companion Websites The best AI companion website for one person isn’t necessarily the best for someone else. You will want to try different ones to figure out which is ideal for you. Some sites may be more geared towards people on the autistic spectrum. You may want to focus on sites that seem to align with your interests, but it is a good idea to give different ones a try. Most sites have free trials if you want to test them out before subscribing. You may want to do that if you don’t feel like spending a lot of money subscribing to different sites. Make Sure that You Understand the Rules Before Joining AI companion websites tend to have different rules. You will want to make sure that you understand them before joining. If you have an interest in roleplaying certain things that are not allowed on one site, then you will want to look for another one first. Take Price Into Consideration AI companion websites are usually more affordable than going on dates. However, you are going to want to carefully review the pricing policy before joining. Some sites charge a flat fee, while others require you to purchase tokens. The sites that charge for tokens may be cheaper if you don’t use them very often, but can be a lot more expensive for frequent users. You need to monitor the cost carefully if you are on a fixed budget. Many people with neurodivergences are starting to discover the wonders of AI companions. An advocacy group for people affected by autism even suggests they may make human partners a thing of the past . They can help them feel less lonely and improve their social skills. You may want to look into using these services if you have ASD or another neurodivergence. Google has named Debbie Weinstein, a senior executive for the tech giant in the UK, as its president in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Until now, Ms Weinstein has been the US firm’s vice president and managing director in the UK and Ireland, having previously worked at Unilever. She said her focus will be on “unlocking AI-powered growth for everyone”, calling the current AI boom a “pivotal” time for the tech giant. Google has joined many of its rivals in launching a string of high-profile generative AI products in recent times, led by the firm’s generative AI-powered assistant, Gemini. “Europe, the Middle East and Africa is an amazingly diverse and varied region, but the enormous growth opportunity that AI can create is universal,” she said. “My focus will be on unlocking that AI-powered growth for everyone – users, businesses, partners and governments across every part of the region. “I’m excited to be stepping into this role at a pivotal time, in a company where I’ve spent the last ten years and leading a region where I’ve spent much of my life.” Google employs more than 29,000 people across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with 56 offices across 35 countries in those regions working on many of the firm’s largest products, including its search engine, the Android mobile operating system and its Chrome web browser. Its AI research arm, at Google DeepMind, is also led from London. Philipp Schindler, Google senior vice president and chief business officer, said: “This is the AI era and we are only just beginning to see its transformative impact on business and society. “In such a pivotal moment for technology, I’m thrilled we’ve appointed a visionary leader to be our President of Google EMEA. “Debbie brings a track record of unlocking growth that benefits everyone, alongside the passion and focus needed to help our customers succeed, as we bring the best of Google’s Gemini-era to everyone across EMEA.”Trump taps Charles Kushner, father of his son-in-law, as envoy to FranceBy Kemberley Washington, CPA, Bankrate.com (TNS) As the end of the year approaches, now’s the time to start preparing for filing your 2024 tax return in 2025. When it comes to tax strategies, generally Dec. 31 is the deadline to make changes that might lower your tax bill. One major exception is the deadline for contributing to a Roth or traditional IRA : You have until April 15, 2025, to make a contribution to a Roth or traditional IRA for tax year 2024. If you qualify for deductible IRA contributions , then a contribution to your traditional IRA can reduce your taxable income for 2024. Here are tips and strategies to prepare now for the 2025 tax-filing deadline. If you had significant changes in your life in 2024 — maybe you got married or divorced, started your own business, or had to claim unemployment benefits — your taxes may be more complicated. Business | Savings rates stay strong despite dips: A 2024 recap and what’s next for 2025 As a result, you might need to hire a certified public accountant (CPA), enrolled agent (EA) or other tax professional to prepare and file your taxes. If you decide to hire someone, it’s best to start planning for that sooner rather than later. Waiting until the calendar flips to April could cost you. The average fee for a professional to prepare and file a simple Form 1040 tax return, with no itemized deductions, is about $220, according to a survey by the National Society of Accountants in 2020-2021, the most recent data available. But that amount rises quickly for more complex returns, and varies depending on where you live. For example, a Form 1040 with itemized deductions costs an average of $432 in states on the Pacific Coast, compared with $285 in New England. No matter where you live, prices usually rise as the tax deadline approaches, so it’s smart to start searching for a tax pro soon. If you’re uncomfortable doing your taxes on your own and can’t afford a CPA, enrolled agent or other tax pro, or to pay for tax software , there are free options to consider. The IRS currently offers three ways to prepare your taxes for free: •With the IRS Free File program, the IRS partners with for-profit tax-software companies that offer free tax-prep software to eligible taxpayers so they can file their federal tax returns for free. Some taxpayers may also qualify for a free state tax filing, depending on the software provider. In January, the IRS will announce the income limit to qualify for the program for the 2025 tax season (for filing 2024 tax returns). For the 2024 tax season (2023 tax returns), taxpayers’ adjusted gross income (AGI) couldn’t exceed $79,000. •The IRS also offers its Direct File program, a free tool that allows you to file your federal income tax return directly with the IRS at no cost. The program supports simple tax returns and is available only in certain states. Check to see if you qualify here. •Another free-filing option is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. IRS-certified volunteers offer free basic tax preparation in person to people who earn less than $67,000 a year, are disabled or whose English is limited. The IRS has an online location tool for hundreds of free tax preparation sites in the U.S. (the locator tool is updated from February through April). Some VITA sites also offer online tax-prep assistance. Now is a good time to create an IRS online account. If you want to see your Form 1040 from last year, or you’re missing a prior year Form W-2 or mortgage interest statement, you can find your documents using this free tax tool. Another benefit of creating an IRS online account is that it allows you to quickly obtain your prior year’s tax information without sitting on the phone for hours with an IRS representative, says Carl Johnson, a certified public accountant in New Orleans. An IRS online account also lets you view your account balance and payment history for each year. You can also create a payment plan to settle your federal income tax debt within minutes. If you’re 73 years old and have enjoyed watching your 401(k) or IRA grow tax-free without touching it, remember that the IRS is going to want its share each year. That means you’ll have to make withdrawals — and pay income tax. If you turned 73 in 2024, plan to take your required minimum distribution (RMD) at the latest by April 1, 2025. Read this IRS bulletin for more information. The amount of your RMDs is based on your age and the year-end values of your retirement accounts. A Roth IRA has two big tax advantages over a traditional IRA : Qualified withdrawals are not considered income for federal (and usually state) tax purposes, and you don’t have to take distributions from a Roth every year once you reach age 73. Converting a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA may save you money in the long run. Just know that when you convert an IRA to a Roth, it’s considered taxable income, which will raise your tax bill for that year. Generally, it’s best to convert to a Roth IRA when you’re in a low-income year. As tax season approaches, many people start receiving phone calls, emails and texts from entities claiming to be the IRS. Be wary, and understand that these are scams. Typically, the IRS will mail you a notice before using any other method of communication to notify you concerning issues with your tax return. The IRS won’t reach out via social media or text messaging. Relatedly, the IRS warns taxpayers to be careful when choosing a tax preparer. Taking time to vet your tax preparer is crucial to protect yourself from tax scams and fraud. Before hiring a tax professional, search that person’s name in the IRS database of federal tax return preparers to avoid dishonest “professionals.” “Taxpayers should check the tax professional’s credentials,” Johnson says. Tax pros without credentials “may take questionable positions without any degree of scrutiny or fear of losing their access to the profession,” Johnson says. Taxpayers who don’t file a tax return and owe a tax bill, or who file but don’t pay their tax bill on time, risk severe penalties. The IRS can even seize assets if necessary. Respond quickly if the IRS has been sending you letters because it found an error on your return or claims you owe back taxes. Typically, the IRS will send you a notice if you have a balance due, changes were made to your tax return, or the agency needs additional information. “If you ignore a collection letter from the IRS, you may face wage garnishments, liens, bank levies, and other adverse action. And in some cases, the amount due may increase for failure to respond,” Johnson says. Keep in mind the IRS does offer installment plans and other payment plans. Make copies of your correspondence and use only the U.S. Postal Service, the postmark from which is your proof of timeliness when responding. But whatever you do, don’t ignore the IRS because this may cause more issues in the future. ©2024 Bankrate.com. Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.
