mr beast casino app We all know what happens when voice acting goes wrong. There’s a reason your brain still reads "It's-a-me, Mario!" in Charles Martinet’s legendary voice, not whatever Chris Pratt’s doing (or isn’t doing) in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog family flicks are playing the same adaptation game, but avoid making the same mistakes when it comes to gimmick casting that doesn’t benefit the role. That's the problem with celebrity stunt casting in animated movies and why it should be avoided — you sacrifice quality for a (hopeful) box office cheat code. Everyone's favorite Parks and Recreation brat isn't just Ben Schwartz-ing through Sonic's dialogue. The actor strives to honor Sonic's voice in past SEGA video games while putting his spin on a more juvenile character interpretation. There's an art to Schwartz's voice acting and acknowledgment of Sonic's prior iterations. Like Mario, Sonic's voice appears in television shows and video games when speech became more than 8-bit garble or speech synthesis. Why would you want to erase all that history and relation? The difference in quality between The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise depicts the stark contrast between memorable and forgettable revamps. Universal and Illumination's mushroom-eating adaptation opts for the aforementioned celebrity stunt castinga cold and transactional method focused on maximizing profits at all costs. Sonic the Hedgehog invests in transformative voice acting, where the draw isn't who's behind pixelated recordings but the characters on screen. It's an animated film's job to immerse audiences in fantastical worlds, which the hybrid live-action Sonic movies accomplish whether in the fictional town of Green Hills, modern-day Tokyo, or a digitized mushroom planet. That’s because no matter the backdrop, Schwartz and company want you to believe Sonic, Tails, and the whole gang are real. They don’t want the credit themselves. The Super Mario Bros. Movie boasts a stacked cast, but what do they bring to their character personalities? Jack Black grumbles and croons as a serviceable Bowser (Black himself is a cartoon character, so that checks out), but even impressionist Keegan-Michael Key's Toad is oddly flat. Luigi sounds like Charlie Day but vaguely New Yorker, Donkey Kong is straight-up Seth Rogen, Princess Peach is an unaltered Anya Taylor-Joy — there's no passion behind vocal development. It's the equivalent of dialogue cosplay if purchased on Temu, like slapping a novelty mustache on Chris Pratt while he holds a plunger. Meanwhile, Ben Schwartz has a motormouth zip about his words that matches Sonic's hyperspeed lifestyle. Schwartz can be hilarious as Sonic does his best Quicksilver from X-Men impression during slow-motion action scenes, but also heartfelt and emotional when Sonic faces insurmountable odds or learns everlasting lessons. There's depth to Schwartz's vocal performance that speaks to the values of professional voice acting, which is infinitely harder than it looks. You’re reading lines off scripts in silent isolation, unable to interact with co-stars who’ll share scenes with your pixelated and dubbed role — yet Schwartz makes it look easy. Sonic never feels out of place next to James Marsten or Jim Carrey, as Schwartz’s range, through sound only, hits more dimensions than live-action actors benefitting from all their theatrical tools. What's distracting and frustrating about The Super Mario Bros. Movie is how all the film's voices have countless reference points, none of which the studio cares to duplicate or reward. When novels or comic books are adapted to film, there's a freedom to cast without direct audible comparisons. But a video game series with hours upon hours of line readings from voice actors who are still readily available for role reprisals? It's not only disrespectful to the artists who've mastered their crafts and helped galvanize a studio's brand, but distracting from a fanbase standpoint. Slaslfilm’s BJ Colangelo makes a compelling case to "stop screwing with legacy characters," and she's right. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 takes its reverence for its source material a step farther,, introducing beloved animal buddies Miles "Tails" Prower and Knuckles the Echidna. Now, Tails has one of the more unique voices in the Sonic universe — so Paramount went right to the source by hiring Tails' voice actress since 2010, Colleen O'Shaughnessey. Knuckles eventually went to Idris Elba, but not as stunt casting. Elba's take on Knuckles understands the fight-first character, echoing his Drax-like barbarian mannerisms with a gruff warrior's tone. There's even a video of Elba wearing personalized Knuckles gloves during recording sessions so he can disappear into the role, which helps us forget there's an Englishman in a box somewhere reading lines. Then there's the casting of Keanu Reeve as Shadow in Sonic The Hedgehog 3. A handful of voice actors have put their spin on Shadow as a baddie and anti-hero, which Reeves manipulates into his John Wickian hedgehog. You can hear Reeves in Shadow's bluntness and gravel, but there's a more profound parallel. Shadow's history is one of coldness and tragedy at the hands of G.U.N., which Reeves handles with empathy. Reeves himself has dealt with unthinkable hardships throughout his life, tying this sympathetic bond between actor and character. Keanu Reeves isn’t playing Shadow the Hedgehog, he is Shadow the Hedgehog, and the parallels between actor and character help develop a well-rounded alien who is himself on screen, not the man behind the words (even if he sounds just like him). Each actor's connection to their colorful counterparts is the secret sauce that's elevated Paramount's Sonic franchise above other video game adaptations. The Super Mario Bros. Movie sold itself on the backs of Chris Pratt, Jack Black, and the entire ensemble cast. Sonic the Hedgehog has enlisted equally impressive stars, but these movies aren't about Keanu Reeves or Idris Elba. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow are the stars — the characters are who we’re talking about after after the credits roll. When you watch any Sonic the Hedgehog after or before The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the debate over celebrity stunt casting falls apart. As an Italian, I laughed when Chris Pratt was announced as Mario but kept an open mind only to be proven wrong. As a Sonic fan who saw those nightmare first renderings of Sonic with teeth, I entered even more nervous — once again proven wrong. Paramount's voice cast choices have been aces thus far, endearing these movies to Sonic fans instead of pushing them away. Let's give kudos where appropriate — the fantastic voice actors selflessly bringing Sonic and his buddies to life on the big screen. What is Salt Typhoon? CAIRO (AP) — Famine is spreading in Sudan due to a war between the military and a notorious paramilitary group that has devastated the country and created the world’s largest displacement crisis, a global hunger monitoring group said Tuesday. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, or IPC, said it detected famine in five areas, including in Sudan’s largest displacement camp, Zamzam , in North Darfur province, where famine was found for the first time in August. The report said the war has triggered unprecedented mass displacement and a collapsing economy. It said hostilities can result in farmers abandoning their crops, looting and stock destruction. Along with the Zamzam camp, which has more than 400,000 people, famine was also detected in two other camps for displaced people, Abu Shouk and al-Salam in North Darfur, and the Western Nuba Mountains, the IPC report said. Five other areas in North Darfur are projected “with reasonable evidence” to experience famine in the next six months, including el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur, it said. Seventeen areas in the Nuba Mountains and the northern and southern areas of Darfur are at risk of famine, it added. The report also said some areas in the capital, Khartoum, and the east-central province of Gezira “may be experiencing” famine-like conditions. It said experts were unable to confirm whether famine threshold has been surpassed due to lack of data. “It is not merely a lack of food but a profound breakdown of health, livelihoods and social structures, leaving entire communities in a state of desperation,” it said. There is widespread hunger, with food in markets scarce and prices high. Aid groups say they struggle to reach the most vulnerable as warring parties limit access, especially in North Darfur province. Ahead of the IPC's report, Sudan’s government said it had suspended its participation in the global monitoring system, according to a senior United Nations official with knowledge of the move. In a letter dated Dec. 23, Agriculture Minister Abu Baker al-Beshri accused the IPC of “issuing unreliable reports that undermine Sudan’s sovereignty and dignity,” said the U.N. official, who spoke in condition of anonymity to discuss the letter. Sudan's 20-month war has killed more than than 24,000 people and driven over 14 million people — about 30% of the population — from their homes, according to the United Nations. An estimated 3.2 million Sudanese have crossed into neighboring countries including Chad, Egypt and South Sudan. The war began in April 2023 when tensions between its military and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces exploded into fighting in Khartoum before spreading to other areas. The conflict has been marked by atrocities including ethnically motivated killing and rape, according to the U.N. and rights groups. The International Criminal Court is investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Dervla Cleary, a senior emergency and rehabilitation officer at the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization, said 638,000 people are experiencing famine. “The situation in Sudan is just awful. It is unacceptable in a world like today,” she said. The IPC report called for a ceasefire, calling it the only way to reduce the risk of famine spreading further." Sudan is the third country where famine was declared in the past 15 years, along with South Sudan and Somalia. The IPC comprises more than a dozen U.N. agencies, aid groups and governments that use its monitoring as a global reference for analysis of food and nutrition crises. The organization has also warned that large parts of Gaza’s Palestinian population face the threat of famine.Tagovailoa carves up Pats with 4 TDs, Dolphins win 3rd straight game with 34-15 rout of New England

Commanders get by Falcons in OT for long-awaited playoff berthSri Lanka is witnessing a significant shift towards sustainable finance with Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) introducing the listing and trading of Green Bonds in 2023. DFCC Bank led the way among financial institutions to issue the first green bond in the country, aimed at funding renewable energy projects particularly in the solar energy sector. This has been followed by Alliance Finance announcing the plans to issue redeemable green bonds to raise Rs. 1 billion. The issuance of green bonds by these institutions is an encouraging sign, especially in the context of global and local climate change concerns. As the world grapples with the impacts of climate change, these initiatives are crucial for driving the transition to a low-emission economy. With Sri Lanka’s commitment to achieve net zero carbon status by 2050, the adoption of green finance instruments is a positive step towards mitigating environmental risks and fostering sustainable development. While Green Bonds are promising, the current focus remains largely on the aspects of issuance and uptake. It should be noted that the success of green bonds depends not only on their issuance but also on their effective deployment towards projects that genuinely contribute to environmental sustainability. MTI recently completed the Green Finance Taxonomy for the Maldives and was appointed as an Observer Organization of the Green Climate Fund Thus, a critical question arises: Does Sri Lanka have the necessary green finance ecosystem, infrastructure, and impact measurement mechanisms to ensure that the funds raised through green bonds are effectively deployed to mitigate climate change? A robust green finance ecosystem is essential to provide clear guidelines, regulatory frameworks, and impact measurement tools to track the environmental benefits of the projects funded by green bonds. A national green finance taxonomy plays a crucial role in this context. A well-defined taxonomy provides a framework for classifying and evaluating green projects, ensuring that the funds are directed towards genuinely sustainable initiatives to prevent greenwashing. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) launched Sri Lanka’s national green taxonomy in 2022 to classify economic activities that can be considered as ‘Green’. The directions issued by CBSL require financial institutions to follow; Yet, providing specific and comparable impact reporting guidelines remains unaddressed. Public accountability is another vital aspect. Linking green bond issuance to measurable impact ensures transparency and accountability. It is essential for financial institutions to regularly report on the environmental outcomes of the projects funded by green bonds. This not only builds trust among investors but also ensures that the funds are making a tangible difference in addressing climate change. In conclusion, the issuance of green bonds by Sri Lankan financial institutions marks a significant advancement towards sustainable finance. However, to fully realize the potential of these green bonds, it is crucial to establish a robust green finance ecosystem with comprehensive impact measurement mechanisms to achieve a greener and more sustainable future. Media Contact: Brandon Price , at [email protected] or (602) 325-9431 SOURCE Integro BankInstitute for Systems Biology (ISB) researchers have gained new insights into the strengths and limitations of using artificial intelligence (AI) to identify social determinants of health from electronic health records. Their results are published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research . The ISB team, collaborating with Providence, leveraged large language models (LLM) developed from generative pre-trained transformers (GPT). Their research was conducted completely within the secure Providence internal environment. The study—aimed at detecting housing instability—was conducted on over 25,000 clinical notes from 795 pregnant women and evaluated two large language models (GPT-4 and GPT-3.5), a named entity recognition model, regular expressions, and human review. This research goes beyond previous studies in two important ways. First, researchers measured how well AI can find housing challenges, distinguish between current and past housing instability, and provide direct evidence from clinical notes. Second, they measured whether AI performed differently if the notes had been de-identified. GPT-4 was the most effective of the four technologies tested, and was better than humans at finding cases of housing instability (recall). Humans, however, were better at understanding when people did not have housing instability (precision). Humans were also better at providing correct evidence from a clinical note. "These results show that LLMs present a scalable, cost-effective solution for an initial search for patients who may benefit from outreach," said ISB Associate Professor Jennifer Hadlock, MD, corresponding author of the paper. GPT-4 generally provided the same text that humans had selected to justify answers. Notably, no hallucinated comments appeared in the GPT-4 responses that were reviewed, most likely because the researchers designed the LLM instructions to request verbatim evidence from notes. However, there were cases where the AI interpretation of note text was incorrect in ways that could be misleading. This is especially important because housing status can intersect with many other challenging or risky situations, such as domestic abuse. "When a health care professional decides whether and how to reach out to offer help, they take great care to consider patient safety. Our results illustrate that it would still be essential to have a human read the actual text in the chart, not just the LLM summary," Hadlock added. Further, in a novel experiment, researchers showed that recall was worse when run on de-identified versions of the same clinical notes. These notes had been de-identified with an automated technique called "hide in plain sight," which replaces potentially sensitive information (such as names, locations and dates) with realistic but fictitious alternatives. The de-identification sometimes reclassified critical information enough to skew the ability to accurately determine housing instability . "This highlights the need to refine de-identification methods to preserve privacy without losing important details about social determinants of health," said Alexandra Ralevski, Ph.D., lead author of the study. Are Sania Mirza and Mohammed Shami Planning to Get Married? Here’s What We KnowProducts linked to McGregor dropped from about 1,000 stores as retailer boycott intensifies

In Ancient Greece, northern tribes often journeyed to the Oracle of Dodona, a sacred sanctuary where priests and priestesses interpreted the rustling of oak leaves, the behavior of birds, and sounds from bronze cauldrons as messages from the god Zeus. The oracle stood as a beacon of accuracy and wisdom, attracting those seeking guidance – from contemplating rulers and generals to ordinary travelers hoping to understand their fate. Today, the art of prediction is still practiced, although it has evolved. Modern militaries churn through massive amounts of satellite information and real-world data with human analysts and AI. Entire battles can be simulated by computer. Companies use predictive models to forecast demand... weather forecasters use simulations to determine the chance of rain... ...and savvy investors often use these same tools to figure out what comes next in the market. Investors like Tom Yeung, who joins me once a week here at Smart Money to keep you updated about markets, investing, and everything in between. Tom’s market analysis is remarkable. He’s essentially practicing a modern form of auspicy, or the ancient art of divining future events. He has done this most recently by analyzing President-Elect Donald Trump’s current actions and their future effects on the stock market’s potential trajectory. While he’s no divine profit, Tom has a unique approach to predicting market signals, using social media and political developments as his bronze cauldrons and rustling leaves. In today’s Smart Money , I want to share some of Tom’s recent auspicious insights... including why the key to investing in politically sensitive stocks over the next four years will be understanding that Trump needs to be taken seriously, but not literally. Here’s what he has to say... From the Smart Money “Oracle” In November 2016, Google search terms for “move to Canada” spiked 20-fold. Who could blame the millions of worried Americans? The incoming president was a polarizing figure that had campaigned on issues like repealing the Affordable Care Act, eliminating gun-free zones at schools, ending birthright citizenship, and so on. Half the country was terrified. But what came next over the following four years was the same type of prioritization that every American president faces in office. Many campaign promises were kept, while others were watered down or abandoned entirely. It turned out that many of Donald Trump’s promises were about outlining his world views, rather than specific blueprints to implement. A promise to cut the corporate tax rate to 15% was only partially fulfilled. So were goals of raising GDP growth to 4%, saving the coal industry, and so on. Wilder ambitions of “eliminating wasteful spending in every department” went nowhere. Fast-forward to today, and this explains why the betting market’s calling Trump’s “bluff” on imposing 20% across-the-board tariffs. Polymarket, a betting site that correctly predicted Trump’s recent election victory, gives a 38% chance of large tariffs being implemented in his first six months and only a 29% chance he will follow through with a recent threat to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada. Instead, people seem to believe Trump is threatening tariffs as a negotiating tool. Countries like China will see some increase in tariffs, especially if their leaders fail to offer something in return. But many other regions will see room to negotiate lower tariffs (or none at all) in exchange for something else. It’s more than likely that Trump will come to an agreement with Canada to keep the oil and gas taps open. So, we see no reason to panic-sell commodity-producing stocks that export to the United States. Now,the picture is a little more muddled with healthcare stocks . Trump’s selection of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the next head of Department of Health and Human Services ( HHS ) injects enormous uncertainty into the industry. While his well-known vaccine skepticism raises concerns for vaccine manufacturers like Pfizer Inc. ( PFE ) , there are healthcare stocks that remain on the “right” side of Trump’s mandate. ( You can learn more about Eric’s healthcare stock recommendations at Fry’s Investment Report .) In fact, many of Trump’s goals for his second presidency will be good for pharma companies with strong pipelines. This includes repealing the Medicare negotiation provision of the Inflation Reduction Act, reducing Federal Trade Commission oversight of mergers and acquisitions among corporations, lowering corporate taxes, and more. Our investment strategy continues to focus on identifying stocks with attractive valuations, while managing potential political volatility. A New Stock Prediction Tool So, just like the Oracle of Dodona, Tom too makes stock market predictions by interpreting signs from the natural world (in this case, Trump’s current actions). However, he isn’t the only auspice here at InvestorPlace . In fact, my colleague Luke Lango has a new quant system that does the same thing. His new tool – called Auspex – scans over 10,000 stocks to find the ones that meet his strict criteria for fundamental, technical, and sentiment strength. It then divines the immediate future of each stock to tell you which ones are the best over the best month. And the Auspex screener can get you in front of big winners roughly every 30 days. Over a 5-year period from September 2019 to September 2024, Luke’s historical analysis shows the Auspex portfolio, rebalanced monthly, would have returned 1,0534% The S&P 500 only put up 109% over the same 5-year period. So, we’re talking about an outperformance of the market by 9X. And it has beaten the market every single month since Luke started live testing it in July with a small group of his subscribers. It requires just about 10 minutes of work a month, and exposure to only 10 or so equities at a time. On Wednesday, December 11, at 1 p.m. Eastern time , he’ll reveal this new screener to a wider audience during his free The Auspex Anomaly Event next Wednesday. Luke will also reveal the name and ticker symbol of a stock he used Auspex to uncover during this free broadcast. It’s an event that you won’t want to miss. So, be sure to click here to reserve your spot . Regards, Eric Fry

IHSA football championships shouldn't lump private and public high schools togetherTrump’s tariff threat a grim reminder of turbulent trade in first administrationAP News Summary at 6:05 p.m. EST

Mid-American Conference football goes all in on November weeknights for the TV viewersFrance celebrated the re-opening of Notre Dame cathedral on Saturday at a special church service that featured a standing ovation for the firefighters who saved the 12th-century landmark from destruction during a 2019 blaze. A two-hour service attended by incoming US president Donald Trump among other world leaders began with the archbishop of Paris knocking on the doors of the cathedral three times. "Notre Dame, model of faith, open your doors to bring together the far-flung children of God in joy," archbishop Laurent Ulrich commanded, banging with a wooden staff crafted from a roof beam that survived the inferno five years ago. Trump could be seen sitting on the front row as guest of honour next to French President Emmanuel Macron, with invitees marvelling at the freshly cleaned walls, new furniture and state-of-the-art lighting installed as part of the overhaul. In a short speech, Macron expressed the "gratitude of the French nation" for the restoration work, achieved at frenzied speed over the last five years. France had "rediscovered what great nations can do -- achieve the impossible", he said. One of the most moving moments came when firefighters in their protective gear walked through the congregation to thunderous applause as the word "Merci" ("Thank you") was beamed on the intricate facade and famous belltowers of the Gothic masterpiece. Small crowds of Parisians and tourists braved wet weather and high winds outside to witness the renaissance of a monument, which came close to collapsing due to the intensity of the inferno that toppled its roof and spire. "I find it really beautiful, even more so now that the spire has been restored," Marie Jean, a 27-year-old dentist from southwest France, told AFP outside. The reconstruction effort cost around 700 million euros ($750 million), financed from donations, with the re-opening achieved within a five-year deadline despite predictions it could take decades. Workers had to overcome problems with lead pollution, the Covid-19 epidemic, and the army general overseeing the project falling to his death while hiking in the Pyrenees last year. Saturday's service featured classical music, the cathedral's choir as well as the "re-awakening" of the 8,000-pipe organ which is considered the voice and soul of the cathedral. A televised public concert planned outside featuring Chinese piano virtuoso Lang Lang and possibly US singer and fashion designer Pharrell Williams had to be pre-recorded on Friday night because of the stormy weather. Held up as an example of French creativity and resilience by Macron, Notre Dame's renaissance so soon after the fire comes at a difficult time for the country. The sense of national accomplishment in restoring a symbol of Paris has been undercut by political turmoil that has left France without a proper government since last week when prime minister Michel Barnier lost a confidence vote. Macron is hoping the re-opening might provide a fleeting sense of national pride and unity -- as the Paris Olympics did in July and August. He scored a major coup by attracting Trump along with around 40 heads of state and government, including Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, who was given a round of applause as he entered Notre Dame. Macron hosted three-way talks with Zelensky and Trump at the presidential palace shortly before the ceremony, with future US military support for Ukraine's war effort against Russia's invasion expected to have been discussed. Trump has vowed to end the nearly three-year Ukraine war when he takes office on January 20, sparking fears in Kyiv that he will force Ukraine to make territorial concessions to Russia. "It seems like the world is going a little crazy right now and we will be talking about that," Trump told reporters as he prepared to sit down for talks with Macron. One surprising absentee on Saturday was Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church. He sent a message addressed to the French people and weighed into a row about whether the place of worship and tourist attraction should remain free to enter. The "immense" numbers set to visit Notre Dame should be welcomed "generously and free of charge", he said, clearly opposing a proposition from the French culture ministry to charge for entry. The exact cause of the 2019 blaze has never been identified despite a forensic investigation by prosecutors, who believe an accident such as an electrical fault was the most likely reason. On Sunday, the first mass with 170 bishops and more than 100 Paris priests will take place at 10:30 am (0930 GMT), followed by a second service in the evening at 6:30 pm which will be open to the public. adp-sjw/jj

Tariff Threats Show Trump’s Commitment to Upending Global TradePV Sindhu, the renowned champion of Olympic badminton, tied the knot with Venkata Datta Sai on the festive day of December 22, 2024. Their love story, which interestingly sparked mid-air during a flight, was jubilantly celebrated. Published: December 25, 2024 6:32 PM IST By Edited by Noteworthy Indian Olympian, PV Sindhu, renowned for bagging two Olympic medals, recently tied the knot with Venkata Datta Sai, a top-tier official at Posidex Technologies, located in Hyderabad. Their intimate wedding ceremony took place on December 22, 2024. Sindhu, who achieved silver medals during 2016’s Rio Olympics as well as Tokyo’s 2020 Games, holds the title of the most successful Indian badminton player. A couple of days post their matrimony, she took to social media sharing the joy of her nuptials, punctuated by a gallery of beautiful wedding pictures and a love-filled emoji. Furthermore, Sindhu delved into their blossoming love story in an interview that followed. 22fun casino Smart Aquaculture - Water Quality Online Monitoring System 12-17-2024 11:26 PM CET | Industry, Real Estate & Construction Press release from: ABNewswire Image: https://ecdn6.globalso.com/upload/p/1459/image_product/2024-11/1-1-3.png Industry status In recent years, with the continuous development of the aquatic industry, the breeding density has continued to increase, the breeding environment has deteriorated, and the breeding costs have continued to rise. Traditional breeding methods can no longer meet the development needs of aquaculture, and intelligent breeding facilities are imperative. Many aquatic companies have begun to explore the path of intelligent breeding, actively trying to use the help of Internet of Things technology to achieve functions such as water environment monitoring and remote control. Image: https://ecdn6.globalso.com/upload/p/1459/image_product/2024-11/1-2-2.png Farmers can use computers at home to understand the situation of their ponds. They can not only grasp the changes in real-time water quality data, view videos, and monitor the on-site environment in real time; more importantly, once a problem is discovered, the oxygenation equipment in the pond can be remotely operated automatically and in a timely manner. This provides great convenience for farmers and achieves the effect of reducing costs and increasing efficiency. The entire transmission line online monitoring system consists of three parts: front-end monitoring device, full-network industrial wireless router, and remote monitoring center. 01Front-end monitoring device The front-end monitoring device includes cameras and various sensors. The 4-way cameras are connected to the router LAN port after being aggregated through the switch to monitor the surrounding environment of the breeding pond, personnel activities, pond water level, etc. In case of emergency, the on-site video can also be viewed remotely. Various sensors are connected to the router serial port through the 485 bus. 02 All-Network Industrial Wireless Router All-Network 4G wireless router, industrial-grade design, adaptable to harsh outdoor installation environments. It supports three networking methods: WAN, WIFI, and operator network. In this project, the public cellular network is used to provide a network for on-site equipment. At the same time, after networking, the serial port application will actively connect to the remote center to achieve serial port data transparent transmission. 03Remote Monitoring Center Image: https://ecdn6.globalso.com/upload/p/1459/image_product/2024-11/1-3-2.png The remote monitoring center can realize functions such as water environment monitoring and remote control. It can monitor the temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia nitrogen content, and water level in the breeding pond in real time and turn them into data that can be viewed at any time, providing farmers with real-time and scientific breeding basis and performing remote operations. At the same time, the on-site monitoring video can be viewed through the video cloud platform to discover safety hazards in a timely manner. Image: https://ecdn6.globalso.com/upload/p/1459/image_product/2024-11/1-4-1.png Using technologies such as the Internet of Things, big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, the aquaculture environment (such as water temperature, water quality, dissolved oxygen, pH value, etc.) is monitored in real time, and the aquaculture conditions are automatically adjusted according to preset parameters to ensure that aquatic organisms are in the best growth state. The entire aquaculture process can be traced to ensure the quality and safety of aquatic products. Media Contact Company Name: Tianjin ShareShine Technology Development Co., Ltd. Syrians poured into streets in celebration on Sunday after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule . Russian state news agencies were reporting that President Bashar Assad and his family had arrived in Moscow and were given asylum. Russia said Assad left the country after negotiations with rebel groups and that he had given instructions to transfer power peacefully. Joyful crowds gathered in central squares in Damascus, waving the Syrian revolutionary flag. Others ransacked the presidential palace and residence. Abu Mohammed al-Golani , a former al-Qaida commander who cut ties with the group years ago leads the biggest rebel faction in Syria and is poised to chart the country’s future. He made his first public appearance since fighters entered the Damascus suburbs Saturday, at the capital’s sprawling Umayyad Mosque, and called himself by his given name, Ahmad al-Sharaa. He said Assad’s fall was “a victory to the Islamic nation.” The rapidly developing events have shaken the region. Lebanon said it was closing all its land border crossings with Syria except for one that links Beirut with Damascus. Jordan closed a border crossing with Syria, too. Israel has issued warnings to villages in southern Syria and its forces seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights. Here's the Latest: The Israeli military said on Sunday it was reinforcing a barrier along its border with Syria as part of its “enhanced preparedness” in the area following the fall of the Assad regime. Israel released images of the construction, which showed bulldozers digging what appeared to be a trench. The army said in a statement that the barrier was named “New East.” Satellite images analyzed by The Associated Press show that as early as September, Israel began building what could be a new road right along the so-called Alpha Line that separates the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria . The United Nations confirmed that Israeli troops entered the demilitarized zone during the work. Over the weekend, the Israeli military sent additional troops to the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights to bolster Israel’s presence along the border with Syria. Russian state news agencies reported that ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad has arrived in Moscow with his family and been given asylum. The agencies, Tass and RIA, cited an unidentified Kremlin source. The Associated Press was not immediately able to verify the reports but had contacted the Kremlin for comment. CAIRO — The Arab League on Sunday condemned Israel for taking advantage of Syrian President Bashar Assad's downfall by moving into more Syrian territory. Hours after Assad’s overthrow, Israel announced it had seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights that was established by a cease-fire agreement with Syria in 1974. In a statement, the Arab League said Israel illegally sought to occupy more territories. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the 50-year-old agreement regarding Syrian territory had collapsed and that Syrian troops had abandoned their positions, necessitating Israel taking over as a “temporary defensive position.” UNITED NATIONS — The United Nations secretary-general is marking the “fall of the dictatorial regime” in Syria and says the future of the country is “is a matter for the Syrians to determine.” A statement by Antonio Guterres also called for calm and the protection of the rights of all Syrians as well as of diplomatic and consular facilities in Syria. He said there is much work ahead to ensure an “orderly political transition to renewed institutions,” and he called on the international community to ensure that “any political transition is inclusive and comprehensive and that it meets the legitimate aspirations of the people of Syria, in all their diversity.” KYIV, Ukraine - Ukraine’s top diplomat on Sunday responded to Assad’s ouster by describing him as a “dictator” who relied on Russia to prop up his rule - a reference to the military campaign Moscow has waged in Syria since September 2015, teaming up with Iran to allow Assad’s government to fight armed opposition groups and reclaim control over most of the country. "Assad has fallen. This has always been and will be the case with all dictators who bet on Putin. He always betrays those who rely on him,” foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on X. In a separate update on the social network, Sybiha said Kyiv was ready to take steps towards restoring relations with Syria, severed months into Russia’s full-scale invasion of the neighboring state. Kyiv broke off diplomatic ties after Damascus in June 2022 recognized Kremlin-occupied parts of eastern Ukraine as independent territories, in a move welcomed by Moscow and decried by the West as a clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty. JERUSALEM — The Israeli military has issued a warning to residents of five villages and towns in southern Syria to stay inside their homes for their safety. “The fighting in your area is forcing the IDF to act,” the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman said on X. The military didn’t respond to questions. Earlier, Israel said its troops had seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights established in 1974, saying it was to protect Israeli residents after Syrian troops abandoned their positions. Defense Minister Israel Katz said on X that the IDF has been instructed to “seize the buffer zone and control points to ensure the protection of all Israeli communities in the Golan Heights – Jewish and Druze – so that they are not exposed to threats from the other side.” Israel captured the Golan in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed it. The international community, except for the United States, views it as occupied. BEIRUT - The leader of the largest insurgent group in Syria visited the Syrian capital’s sprawling Umayyad Mosque and declared that the victory against President Bashar Assad “is a victory to the Islamic nation.” Ahmad al-Sharaa, who was formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, made his first public appearance and remarks since fighters entered Damascus. He told hundreds of people at the historic mosque that Assad had made Syria “a farm for Iran’s greed.” He added that Assad made Syria a base for the illegal amphetamine Captagon that brought cash to Assad’s circles. Al-Sharaa, the leader of the jihadi Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, said Sunday that the victory was achieved because of “God and the blood of martyrs.” He said that he left Syria 20 years ago and since then his heart has longed for this movement. AMMAN, Jordan — The vast majority of the Jordanian people are welcoming the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the success of the Syrian revolution. “There is no doubt that I felt overwhelming joy at the fall of the Assad regime," said Badi Al-Rafaia, Engineer, union activist and member of the Islamic Action Front. "There is no doubt that we are happy with what happened in Syria, happy with the success of the revolution, happy with the Syrian people getting rid of an oppressor and criminal who treated the Syrian people and made the Syrian state a failed state.” Al-Rafaia said that Jordan is benefiting from what happened in Syria, and "we hope that Jordan will help the revolution succeed and not work against it.” Amman resident Muhab al-Majali said the fall of the Assad regime is “The end of every unjust and tyrannical rule, and more than that, it mortgaged the country and its people to the Iranians, who abandoned it in minutes... I believe that the future is beautiful and prosperous for the Syrians.” BERLIN — The International Committee of the Red Cross is calling for safe humanitarian access and protection of civilians in Syria after the fall of Bashir Assad’s government. “Our teams in Syria, including in Damascus, have been closely monitoring the fast-evolving security and humanitarian situation in coordination with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent,” the ICRC’s head of delegation in Syria, Stephan Sakalian, said in a written statement Sunday. The ICRC is “responding wherever possible, with further efforts underway, as hundreds of thousands of people need care and humanitarian assistance,” he said. Sakalian called “on all parties to urgently enable safe and unhindered access for medical and humanitarian workers to reach those in need, to protect civilians, and to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law.” BAGHDAD — The Iraqi government said in a statement Sunday that it “supports all international and regional efforts seeking to open a dialogue” for Syria “leading to the adoption of a pluralistic constitution that preserves the human and civil rights of Syrians, and supports cultural, ethnic and religious diversity.” The statement from government spokesperson Bassem al-Awadi, said that Iraq understands “the necessity of respecting the free will of all Syrians, and stresses that the security of Syria, the unity of its territories, and the preservation of its independence are of utmost importance, not only for Iraq but also for its connection to the security and stability of the region.” It cautioned against “interfering in Syria’s internal affairs, or supporting one party for the benefit of another.” Iraq, which has a close relationship with Iran - once a strong ally of former Syrian President Bashar Assad - has taken in some 2,000 Syrian army soldiers who fled the country amid the advance of armed opposition groups. CAIRO — The head of Yemen’s internationally recognized government welcomed the fall of the government of President Bashar Assad of Syria. “It’s a historic moment,” Rashad al-Alimi, who chairs the ruling presidential council, wrote on X platform of Assad’s downfall. “It’s time for the Iranian regime to stop meddling in Yemen, respect its sovereignty and identity.” Al-Alimi, who is backed by Saudi Arabia, was referring to Iran’s support of Houthi rebels who are at war with Yemen’s internationally recognized government for a decade. DAMASCUS — Families wandered through the high-ceilinged halls of the presidential palace in Damascus on Sunday, along with some armed men. Some paused to take family portraits or selfies on the few remaining couches against the backdrop of mosaiced walls, while others walked out with chairs and other items under their arms. On the massive parking lot out front, cars drove in circles honking ecstatically. In central Damascus’ Umayyad Square, drivers passing by also honked jubilantly, while young men piled onto a tank abandoned in the square. But for some the celebration was bittersweet. “I am very happy, but this happiness will not be completed until I can see my son out of the prison and know where is he is,” said Damascus resident Bassam Masr. “I have been searching for him for two hours - he has been detained for 13 years.” TEL AVIV, Israel – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israeli forces have seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights established by a 1974 ceasefire agreement with Syria. He spoke from an overlook near the border between Syria and the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, after Syrian rebels tore through the country and dramatically ended Assad’s rule on Sunday morning. Netanyahu said the 50-year-old agreement had collapsed and that Syrian troops had abandoned their positions, necessitating the Israeli takeover as a “temporary defensive position.” Israel captured the Golan Heights in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it. The international community, except for the United States, views it as occupied Syrian territory. Satellite images analyzed by the Associated Press show that as early as September, Israel began construction of what could possibly be a new road right along the so-called Alpha Line that separates the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria . The United Nations confirmed that Israeli troops entered the demilitarized zone during the work. The United Nations maintains a peacekeeping force in the demilitarized zone called the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, or UNDOF, with around 1,100 peacekeepers from Fiji, India, Kazakhstan, Nepal, and Uruguay. After the 1973 Mideast war, the U.N. Secretary Council voted to create UNDOF to patrol a roughly 400 square kilometer (155 square mile) demilitarized zone and maintain the peace there. DAMASCUS, Syria — An Associated Press journalist in Damascus reported airstrikes in the area of the Mezzeh military airport, southwest of the capital Sunday. The airport has previously been targeted in Israeli airstrikes, but it was not immediately clear who launched Sunday's strike. The Israeli military refused to comment on the airport strike. Israel often does not publicly claim responsibility for attacks in Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, reported that Israeli warplanes also targeted warehouses belonging to the Syrian army’s Fourth Division and another former military site outside of Damascus Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday, the Israeli military sent additional troops to the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights to bolster Israel’s presence along the border between Israel and Syria. Agricultural areas along the border were declared closed military zones and some schools shifted to online classes in anticipation of unrest.

Syria latest: Syrians celebrate in the streets as Russian media says Assad has arrived in Moscow

Liverpool's new manager Arne Slot and his dressing room are keeping their feet firmly on the ground despite the Reds holding a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League , citing past examples where Manchester City successfully chased down league leaders. With Liverpool set to face Southampton , Slot remains cautious: "We are all aware of the fact we are only 11 games into the season and will not get carried away," he emphasised. The Liverpool boss is mindful of recent history, recalling how Arsenal and even his own club previously let leads slip late in the season against a relentless City side. He asserts that neither he, the owners, nor the players are under any illusions about the challenges ahead: "It is not like this is the first time in Liverpool history we have been top of the league. I don't think the owners will get carried away. I am for sure not getting carried away, and the players will not as well." As Liverpool gears up for a pivotal week, which includes a Champions League clash with Real Madrid and an impending showdown with City at Anfield, the spotlight is on whether they can maintain their pole position. Liverpool have edged ahead as the bookies' pick to clinch the Premier League title, while Opta's supercomputer also forecasts a triumph for the Reds come May. However, Slot remains uninterested in such speculation, stating: "I don't talk about favourites. It is boring but I just talk about the next game which is a challenge in itself. I have said many times that in the Premier League the margins are very small. That is true all season. "Last season I followed the league and there was a moment when City were eight points behind Arsenal (it was 2022-23) so there is no use in getting carried away at all at this moment in time. "These teams like City, Arsenal and Chelsea and even [Manchester] United and all the others are able to put together a run of games like we did." Slot emphasized the importance of focus and effort: "So we are not getting carried away at all and looking at it like you just said in terms of favourites or whatever. "The players know what they have to do to win a game, and it's a lot. If they could give 50 percent less and still win, maybe we would think we have 50 per cent extra in the tank and not need to give our maximum for results. But we know it has been a close call in many games."TransMedics Appoints Gerardo Hernandez as Chief Financial Officer and Provides Updated 2024 Financial OutlookNone12. Right-wing pundit and author Dinesh D’Souza has now admitted that the central premise of his election conspiracy film and accompanying book, “2,000 Mules,” is false. In the 2022 film, D’Souza cited the right-wing activist group True the Vote to claim cell phone geolocation data proved that volunteers for nonprofits were stuffing ballot boxes with votes in favor of President Joe Biden, helping him to defeat Donald Trump in the 2020 election. “We recently learned that surveillance videos used in the film may not have actually been correlated with the geolocation data,” said a statement quietly posted to D’Souza’s website on Monday. “I now understand that the surveillance videos used in the film were characterized on the basis of inaccurate information provided to me and my team. If I had known then that the videos were not linked to geolocation data, I would have clarified this and produced and edited the film differently,” he added. D’Souza’s note apologized to Mark Andrews, a Georgia man recorded on video footage that was used in the movie with his face blurred. In the original version of the film, D’Souza narrated the scene with Andrews and said, “What you are seeing is a crime. These are fraudulent votes.” Despite D’Souza’s attempt to lay all the blame at the feet of True the Vote, this claim was the central premise of his movie and accompanying book. Salem Media Group, which published the book and distributed the film version, previously apologized to Andrews and said the company would no longer distribute the book or film. Georgia law enforcement agencies previously debunked the film’s allegations but the right-wing provocateurs—led by prominent figures like Trump—have touted the allegations and similar conspiracies for years. D’Souza is a longtime conservative commentator and activist who made the transition to conspiracy theorist several years ago. He has written and directed eight movies since 2012 attacking Democrats and liberals. Among the films are “2016: Obama’s America,” supposedly depicting the dystopia that would occur if President Barack Obama won reelection in 2012; “Death of a Nation,” which compared Trump to Abraham Lincoln; and the debunked tract “2000 Mules.” There was a gap in D’Souza’s filmmaking because in 2014 he pleaded guilty to federal charges of making illegal contributions to the Senate campaign for Wendy Long, the Republican nominee in New York’s 2012 Senate race. Despite D’Souza’s attempt to help, Long lost to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand by 46 percentage points. D’Souza was later pardoned by Trump in 2018, reflecting Trump’s habit of delivering politically for figures who have lavished him with praise—similar to the FBI director nomination he recently offered to Trump fanfic writer Kash Patel. The D’Souza saga is a microcosm of the right-wing media world and conservative culture in general, where utterly false and easily debunked claims are promoted for years on end, only to quietly be cast off when people are no longer paying attention. 'Suay' to one family, 'pakiam' to another

Trump's tariffs in his first term did little to alter the economy, but this time could be different WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump loved to use tariffs during his first presidency. But their impact was barely noticeable in the overall economy, even if their aftershocks were clear in specific industries. The data show they never fully delivered on his promised factory jobs. Nor did they provoke the avalanche of inflation that critics feared. This time, though, his tariff threats might be different. The president-elect is talking about going much bigger — on a potential scale that creates more uncertainty about whether he’ll do what he says and what the consequences could be. His proposed tariffs against Canada and Mexico could blow up an existing trade deal. US consumer price increases accelerated last month with inflation pressures resilient WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumer price increases accelerated last month, the latest sign that inflation’s steady decline over the past two years has stalled. According to the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, consumer prices rose 2.3% in October from a year earlier, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. That is up from just 2.1% in September, though it is still only modestly above the Fed’s 2% target. Trump fills out his economic team with two veterans of his first administration WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump is turning to two officials with experience navigating not only Washington but the key issues of income taxes and tariffs as he fills out his economic team. Trump on Tuesday announced he has chosen international trade attorney Jamieson Greer to be his U.S. trade representative and Kevin Hassett as director of the White House National Economic Council. While Trump has in several cases nominated outsiders to key posts, these picks reflect a recognition that his reputation will likely hinge on restoring the public’s confidence in the economy. US economy grows at 2.8% pace in third quarter on consumer spending, unchanged from first estimate WASHINGTON (AP) — The American economy expanded at a healthy 2.8% annual pace from July through September on strong consumer spending and a surge in exports, the government said Wednesday, leaving unchanged its initial estimate of third-quarter growth. The Commerce Department reported that growth in U.S. gross domestic product — the economy’s output of goods and services — slowed from the April-July rate of 3%. But the GDP report still showed that the American economy — the world’s largest — is proving surprisingly durable. Growth has topped 2% for eight of the last nine quarters. Trump’s latest tariff plan aims at multiple countries. What does it mean for the US? WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has identified what he sees as an all-purpose fix for what ails America: Slap huge new tariffs on foreign goods entering the United States. On Monday, Trump sent shockwaves across the nation’s northern and southern borders, vowing sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, as well as China, as part of his effort to crack down on illegal immigration and drugs. Trump said he will impose a 25% tax on all products entering the country from Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, as one of his first executive orders. The UK will consult on sales targets for automakers during the transition to electric vehicles LONDON (AP) — Britain’s new Labour government will launch a consultation on sales targets set for auto manufacturers during the transition to electric vehicles. That's in the wake of the decision by Stellantis, the owner of Vauxhall, to close its van factory in southern England at the potential cost of 1,100 jobs. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds told lawmakers Wednesday that the problems encountered by Stellantis in the transition to electric vehicles are not unique, adding that the government will do all it can to prevent the closure of the plant. Stellantis blamed its decision on the U.K.’s “stringent” zero-emission vehicle mandate that sets strict targets for manufacturers. After fast start, electric cars need a recharge as range limits, cost leave some drivers skeptical DETROIT (AP) — While sales of electric vehicles surge in China, the spread of more environmentally friendly vehicles is stumbling in the United States and Europe as carmakers and governments struggle to meet years-old promises about affordability and charging stations. And consumers worried more about price and practicality are holding back where first-adopter climate warriors once piled in. Range, charging infrastructure and higher prices are sore points among both electric car enthusiasts and skeptics in Europe and the U.S. China is the exception. Driven by government subsidies and mandates, vehicles with electric motors, including plug-in hybrids that combine electric and fossil fuel motors, topped 50% of sales in July. Stock market today: Wall Street wavers as Big Tech stocks fall Stocks wavered on Wall Street as losses for Big Tech companies offset gains elsewhere in the market. The S&P 500 was down 0.4% in afternoon trading on Wednesday, even though more stocks were rising than falling within the index. Losses for Nvidia and Microsoft helped pull the index lower. Dell sank after reporting revenue that fell shy of forecasts, and HP fell after giving a weaker-than-expected outlook. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.3% from its record high a day earlier. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.7%. U.S. markets will be closed Thursday for Thanksgiving, and will reopen for a half day on Friday. Average rate on a 30-year mortgage in the US slips to 6.81% The average rate on a 30-year mortgage in the U.S. eased this week, though it remains near 7% after mostly rising in recent weeks. The rate slipped to 6.81% from 6.84% last week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Wednesday. That’s still down from a year ago, when the rate averaged 7.22%. The average rate on a 30-year mortgage has been mostly rising since sliding to a two-year low of 6.08% in late September. Elevated mortgage rates and rising home prices have kept homeownership out of reach of many would-be homebuyers. U.S. home sales are on track for their worst year since 1995. Landmark fish and meat markets in London to close, ending 1,000 years of tradition LONDON (AP) — Two of London’s most famous markets — one selling fish, the other meat — are set to close in the coming years, bringing an end to traditions stretching back to medieval times. On Wednesday, The City of London Corporation, the governing body in the capital city’s historic hub, is set to present a bill to Parliament to bring an end to its responsibilities to operate the Billingsgate fish market and the Smithfield meat market, both of which have existed in some shape or form since the 11th century. That comes a day after the corporation decided not to relocate the markets to a new development just east of London in Dagenham.

Trump offers support for dockworkers union by saying ports shouldn't install more automated systemsWind. The popular hymn of St. Francis of Assisi names wind as ‘brother,’ we find it obeying Christ in Matthew 8, and wind from God sweeps across the yet-to-form Creation in the very opening of Scripture in Genesis. For many faith traditions, wind is a sacred gift, and like all sacred gifts, should be used wisely. This is what ‘wind conversion technology’ or ‘wind turbines’ do; they safely combine the work of our hands with the work of the land; stewardship in practice. A Nov. 13 report from the Effingham City Plan Commission that is due for a vote by the Effingham City Council on Dec. 3 seeks to add bureaucratic red tape and inefficiency to this process. Setting in place a long series of hoops that must be jumped through instead of a simple permitting process denies the possibility of new good-paying jobs from a developing industry. It denies supplemental income to farmers who fall under zoning of the city. It prevents cleaner air for the public by continuing our reliance on only fossil fuels that are both causing climate change and increasing rates of asthma. I urge the residents of Effingham to have their city councilors allow the people to benefit from a gift that has already been given to us. Rev. Clayton Summers, Dieterich This month, we will celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Many will be cooking turkeys, baking apple pies, pumpkin pies, and sweet potato pies. It is important to get together with family and friends. As we celebrate, let us reflect back on how blessed we are. Let’s not allow food and football to make us forget the reason we celebrate this day. We have many reasons to be thankful. I often find myself reflecting back on giving thanks. My mother always believed that you can learn a lot about a person if you sit down and share a meal with them. I think of our Savior – during a meal, He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to others. Then after supper, He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to others as well. Let us all be people with grateful hearts to others and let us show acceptance and appreciation. Maya Angelou once said: “Let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel to say your nightly prayer.” Being thankful brings the power of gratitude to life. When we show our appreciation, our hearts will overflow with thankfulness because we have a reason to be grateful. Gratitude tenderizes the heart. It helps us focus on what is important to us and it opens us up to love, kindness, and goodness. Does thanking someone come naturally to us or do we need to be reminded to thank someone? Have you ever forgotten to give thanks? I know I have. When was the last time you gave of yourself instead of receiving? Some people are appreciative by nature. Thankfulness is the opposite of selfishness. Let’s make sure we take time this Thanksgiving to celebrate and spend time with our families, and do things that we enjoy. Most of all, take the time to say thank you to the people who have blessed us with so much. To every supporter of Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois – thank you for your gifts of time and talent. Thank you for investing in our girls because you are making a difference in their lives. Making a difference is the motivation and the satisfaction of why you support us. Thank you for believing in an organization that is building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who will truly make our world a better place – because true love is not what we receive; it is what we give!!! THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!!! Loretta Graham, CEO, Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois I turned the big 60. I cannot even comprehend this in my brain. My brain still thinks my body is young and fit. Can you imagine it still thinks I can still stack those heavy bales five and six rows high? But the reality of the body is maybe only four high to not be too painful. It seems now you can find pains you never knew could exist. What about that stiffness? If you sit too long it is just like starting over. I believe if we could invent WD-40 for the joints life would be amazing and pain and stiffness free. I never understood how an elderly person needed a walker or cane to get around but could do couple-dancing all night long. Now I understand how that works. They support each other and limber up. But, my biggest question is, “Where does time go?” My grandmother always said after age 21, time flies. At the time I thought she did not know what she was talking about. I used to think 40 was old. But now when I say that happened forty years ago it shocks me into a reality. All you young mothers remember, “The days may be long but the years are short.” On another note we are always asking God for favors. Always asking for what we want or need. He will answer in due time. Why is everything about time? But ask yourself, “What is His time, how can we know when it will be?” Here we go on about time. After Hurricane Helene hit North Carolina a Bible wrapped around a fence posted and was open to Revelations. Revelation 14: 7-8 states: “Fear God and give him Glory, for his TIME has come to sit in judgement. Worship him who made heaven and earth and sea and springs of water.” A second angel followed, saying; “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, that made all the nations drink the wine of her licentious passion.” We never know how much time we have on this earth, but we do know the good Lord is coming in his time. I have a question or two for all of us. 1.) If it was your time to meet Jesus today, would you be ready? 2.) Have you stored up earthly riches or have you been concerned about storing up heavenly riches? 3.) If Jesus came today would you tell him, “Sorry Jesus but I am not ready.” But in reality this is not an option. 4.) Have you asked God for forgiveness for your wrong doings or your sins? 5.) Again, will we be ready when the time comes for Him to return. Always remember age is only a number and prayer can be said anywhere whether indoors or outdoors. Always be ready. Lisa Rexroat, DieterichIn conclusion, the eruption of the Taal Volcano in the Philippines has unleashed a wave of destruction and disruption, prompting the evacuation of residents and raising alarm among communities. The coming days and weeks will be critical in assessing the extent of the damage and providing support to those affected. The resilience and unity of the Filipino people will be instrumental in overcoming this crisis and rebuilding stronger in its aftermath.

Have a pretty little ChristmasWith the debut of the new Precision Agricultural program, Flint Hills Technical College anticipates the new program will fill a hole in technical agricultural education in Emporia. The new Precision Agriculture program would have taken longer to debut, according to Kim Dhority, Dean of Academic Affairs, without the $672,288 grant recently obtained from the Patterson Family Foundation. The Patterson Family Foundation is a Kansas City nonprofit that focuses on investing in rural communities through monetary support. They reached out with interest to FHTC concerning their new Precision Agriculture program and CDL license training, and FHTC submitted a grant proposal outlining all new equipment and ideas for the program. To Dhority’s surprise, FHTC was approved for every one of their proposed ideas. Dhority said, “We basically got everything that we needed. It was pretty exciting when we heard back because we figured they would cut some things out and they didn’t.” Precision Agriculture is a relatively new field in agricultural education. It focuses on more technology-centric aspects of farming, such as crop science, analyzing data, and working with a GPS system. “Precision agriculture is dealing more with the GPS systems that are included in modern day equipment,” Dhority said. “Back when my dad bought a tractor, that was not even considered.” Dhority said that FHTC first became aware of a need for more advanced agricultural education during an agricultural summit hosted in Emporia several years ago. Many of Kansas’ leading agricultural experts and farmers attended and were surprised that FHTC did not teach an agricultural program. According to Dhority, “It was a matter of research to find out, ‘What do we need to include in this?” FHTC’s Precision Agriculture program will launch in August of 2025. Dhority said that the college plans to eventually dedicate a separate space for the program, but for now it will be hosted in currently unused classrooms. FHTC is considering land in several places for a new building, including land next west of its Southern Campus 3701 W 6th Ave. No plans have been finalized yet. Precision Agriculture’s plan sent to the Patterson Family Foundation outlined the use for a greenhouse to study crop science. The greenhouse will be funded through the grant, and Dhority wants to hold off on finalizing details of the greenhouse until an instructor is hired. Dhority said, “It’s going to be their program. Let them be part of that process and that person will spend this Spring semester working on those kinds of things, working on finalizing curriculum, what equipment we want to purchase, having that all in place.” FHTC is currently on the hunt for a Precision Agriculture Instructor and hopes to fill the role by the beginning of January. The only requirements for the job are an Associate’s Degree and at least two years of related job experience in an agricultural field. Dhority stated, “We like people to be dynamic, so it’s not just going to be ‘come in and here’s your curriculum,’ and you teach it. They’re going to be responsible for that curriculum.” The program offers two possible routes - a one-year certificate and an Associate’s. The incoming class will be capped at 20 students, a relatively normal amount for FHTC. Dhority believes a wide variety of students will be interested in enrolling due to the program’s focus on both agriculture and technology. “As we get going and we start talking about some of the technical side of things, we're going to see some of those people that maybe are computer programmers or network type students that are going to go, ‘Wait a minute, this is the route that I want to go down,” Dhority said. The Precision Agriculture program was approved by the Kansas Board of Regents but has yet to be approved by the Higher Learning Commission, which accredits most colleges in the U.S. An accreditation with HLC would allow FHTC to provide financial aid to students in that program and let students transfer into other programs. Once approval is granted, the proposed program must then be approved by the Federal Department of Education. According to Dhority, many farmers in the area volunteered their equipment to be used for class assignments and offered students the chance to test out their skills by working on their farms. FHTC excels in offering their students opportunities to learn in a hands-on environment and sees this as a way to give back to the community. “We kept hearing from business and industry, ‘Why didn't we have an agricultural program? Why don't we have an agricultural program? Why is there no agriculture?” Dhority said. “If you look at our surrounding area, we are an agricultural community. That’s what pushed us to go in this direction. My hope is that we have other programs that come out of this program.”

The Future Outlook of A-Shares: Policy Boosts Market ConfidenceSan Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will miss Sunday's game against the Packers with a sore throwing shoulderFirst and foremost, revisiting the concept of "moderate easing" demonstrates the enduring relevance of the idea in navigating economic challenges. The fact that policymakers are once again considering this approach suggests that it has stood the test of time and continues to offer a viable solution to current economic pressures. In a world marked by increasing volatility and uncertainty, the flexibility and adaptability of "moderate easing" as a policy tool make it a valuable resource for policymakers seeking to maintain economic stability.

In the case of Mr. Smith and his daughter, it is important for them to have a candid conversation about his monitoring behavior. Mr. Smith should explain his concerns and intentions behind his actions, while also listening to his daughter's feelings and perspectives. Finding a middle ground that respects the daughter's privacy while ensuring her safety is essential for fostering a healthy parent-child relationship. One of the key advantages of Incremental Policy 2.0 is its flexibility and adaptability. By taking a gradual and iterative approach to policy-making, governments can carefully monitor the impact of their interventions and make adjustments as needed. This allows for a more targeted and precise response to economic challenges, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and effectively.

Real Madrid, the Spanish giants with a storied history of success, are always in the market for top talent to enhance their squad. With their recent struggles in La Liga, sitting behind the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the standings, Real Madrid is keen on recruiting fresh blood to inject new energy into the team. Zinedine Zidane, the team's head coach, is known for his strategic and calculated approach to transfers, but the current financial constraints and limited availability of quality players in the market pose a significant challenge for the club.

Policing costs for cost an estimated $1.9 million, deputy chief Lauren Pogue told the Toronto Police Service Board on Thursday. The cost each concert night was comparable to what’s typically needed for a Raptors playoff game, Pogue added. The city spent 10 days in the middle of November as the centre of the Taylor Swift universe, playing host to the Eras Tour and welcoming up to 500,000 visitors. Friendship bracelets adorned the wrists of every other pedestrian in the downtown core during that two-week stretch, with makeshift bracelets even placed on the Rogers Centre and mounted police horses. Optics aside, there are legitimate security reasons for police to provide a motorcade for a VIP Swift’s initial arrival into the city was after police had cleared the Gardiner Expressway for the mega pop star and provided officers to lead her motorcade through the city. A Toronto police spokesperson confirmed that the $1.9 million spent on policing costs included the police escort for her motorcade. Officers provided “some scout cars and motorcycles” to Swift’s motorcade, a police spokesperson said at the time, but taxpayers didn’t foot the bill for her limo. Much of the effort went to protecting the massive crowds that accumulated downtown on concert days, Pogue said, which present a “soft target” for would-be attackers. Months before her Toronto stint, Swift’s Eras Tour shows in Vienna were abruptly cancelled after two men were arrested in a foiled terror plot. A 19-year-old main suspect and a 17-year-old were reportedly inspired by the and officials said one had confessed to planning to “kill as many people as possible outside the concert venue.” The Eras Tour has moved on to its final stop in Vancouver. For some fans, it leaves “While the safety and security of Taylor Swift herself was always a consideration, the primary focus of the security planning was the protection of the 282,000 concert goers and thousands more members of the public who attended the area to celebrate the Eras event,” Pogue said. Pogue said officers received “many compliments on social media about the professionalism and positivity of our officers,” and police even seized on the concert as a recruiting opportunity. A former CSIS director weighs in on whether Toronto is ready to host six shows. “The energy was incredible, and it was really inspiring to engage directly with so many women and girls,” Pogue added. “As the week went on, we saw a meaningful opportunity to promote the fact that we are trying to recruit talented women.” “With this goal in mind, I invited 25 women members to engage with Swift fans and talk about career opportunities for women at the Toronto Police Service,” she said. “This engagement focused on fostering positive interactions that could inspire someone to consider a career in policing in their future.”

Ever since pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto published a whitepaper on Bitcoin BTC/USD in 2008, there have been plenty of cryptocurrency skeptics. President-elect Donald Trump was one of them . “I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which are not money, and whose value is highly volatile and based on thin air,” Trump tweeted in 2019. He also called out Libra, a virtual currency that Meta Platforms was working on at the time. The Facebook parent company should “seek a new Banking Charter and become subject to all Banking Regulations, just like other Banks,” he insisted. But during his 2024 U.S. presidential campaign , Trump changed his mind. He suggested a strategic national crypto stockpile for the U.S. Trump also launched his own non-fungible tokens on the Polygon MATIC/USD blockchain and accepted Ethereum ETH/USD as a payment option. The Trump transition team is considering a proposal to eliminate a controversial car-crash reporting requirement, largely opposed by Tesla, according to sources. The move could significantly undermine federal oversight of vehicle safety standards, particularly those with automated-driving systems. Tesla, which has been a key subject of data-driven investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), stands to benefit from the removal. The company argues the current rules disproportionately impact them, as they report a substantial portion of crashes to regulators. Some industry insiders and consumer safety advocates argue that eliminating the crash-reporting provision will curb valuable data collection, essential for understanding the safety impacts of emerging autonomous technologies. NHTSA emphasizes the importance of such data in guiding recalls and addressing consumer safety concerns. (With inputs from agencies.)Hamza Igamane put Rangers ahead early in the second half but Spurs battled back and Dejan Kulucevski netted an equaliser that earned his side a point from a thrilling game. Spurs almost got off to an explosive start when the ball was worked to Timo Werner in the box within the first 20 seconds but the German was thwarted and Jack Butland collected the resultant corner with ease. From there, Rangers were on top, with Ridvan Yilmaz and then Hamza Igamane having early shots at the Spurs goal. Former Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster had been given a loud reception from the Rangers fans when his name was read from the team sheets pre-match but he astonished the home fans ten minutes in with a fingertip save to deny a powerful shot from Nedim Bajrami that was destined for the top corner. Philippe Clement had been urging his players on from the first whistle and they continued to take the game to their more fancied opponents, with Vaclav Cerny next to threaten but choosing the wrong pass after breaking into space. The Czech winger forced a save from Forster soon after and Rangers were frustrated soon after when a low cross from Jefte was just out of Bajrami’s reach with the goal wide open to him. There was a blow for the Ibrox side just after the half hour mark though, when John Souttar went down with an apparent groin injury and he had to be replaced with Leon Balogun. Spurs had looked disjointed and wasteful but they weren’t without attacking threat and Butland had to be sharp to deny Brennan Johnson from close range, though the offside flag went up soon after. At half-time there was no doubt who the better team had been but the scoreline remained goalless. That changed just two minutes after the restart. James Tavernier carried the ball forward down the right flank and curled in a cross from deep. Hamza Igamane ran on to the ball and fired in a clinical shot low into the corner as Ibrox erupted. Dejan Kulusevski had replaced Werner at half time as Ange Postecoglou sought to get something from his side and the Swede set up Johnson but saw the forward fail to test Butland from 12 yards out. Mohamed Diomande was next to try his luck with an ambitious half-volley that went wide and the noise level at Ibrox went up another notch. Spurs made a triple change, bringing on Dominic Solanke, Pape Sarr and Lucas Bergvall for Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma and Johnson. The visitors had another good chance soon after when James Maddison had a free-kick just outside the Rangers box but put his effort well over the bar. Rangers seemed unsure of whether to defend their lead or push for a killer second, while Spurs were putting their foot to the floor in pursuit of an equaliser. They got that with 15 minutes left to play. A swift passing move saw the side in white glide up the pitch and after an exchange of passes Kulusevski slotted a finish low past Butland to bring his side level and set up a thrilling finale. Tavernier was forced into a desperate block to deny Solanke as Spurs pushed on but there was plenty of space for the host to pour into when they took possession. Cyriel Dessers had come on to replace Igamane and he was given a golden opportunity with five minutes left. The striker slipped past Archie Gray and fired in his shot but Forster saved, forcing the ball wide when all of Ibrox thought it was destined for the back of the net. The Rangers striker had the ball in the net moments later, only to be flagged offside. Solanke had a last chance to make the headlines when Maddison picked him out in the last minute of regulation time but his weak header was collected by Butland and both sides had to reflect on missed opportunities as they were forced to settle for a point each. Activate your Online Access Now Article content While I haven’t missed receiving the numerous pieces of mail my financial institution used to send me or my monthly credit card bill in the mail in the past decade, what I do miss getting are hand-written greeting cards, postcards and notes. People now text you a “Happy Birthday,” “Merry Christmas” and “Congratulations” rather than mailing cards. They share their vacation memories over social media instead of writing a postcard, and send you a “Thank You” email for a gift or thoughtful gesture rather than penning a note. More immediate? Yes. Less expensive? Definitely (as it now costs $1.15 for a domestic stamp). As meaningful? Not to me. There is something special about receiving something personalized and hand-written in the mail. I’m one of the few in my friend-group who still mails out holiday cards. Despite receiving only a handful myself in recent years and knowing that a booklet of stamps costs double the price I paid for my box of cards, I still love sending them. I buy the newly issued festive stamps each year, write my message in green ink, and drop my cards in the mailbox the first week of December. I send them that early because I know it is called “snail mail” for a reason (it sometimes takes a full week for something to get delivered within my own city). I also know that people who don’t have a mailbox right outside their front door don’t check theirs regularly anymore. Because they, too, are getting so few of them as the years go on and technology usurps this cherished tradition. In Canadian Neil Pasricha’s international best-selling book, The Book of Awesome , about the little things in life that make us happy, “Getting something with actual handwriting on it in the mail” is listed as an awesome thing. He writes, “These little endangered parcels have something special about them,” and explains it’s so fantastic to receive them because they’re so rare. Pasricha recommends treasuring these handwritten notes when you get them. And if you don’t get them, he points out that “there’s and easy way to start. Man, just send a couple.” I have noticed that a few people to whom I’ve sent holiday cards have, for the very first time, started to send ones in return, creating that ripple effect Pasricha had hoped for. So, while many people will go about their business and go on with their days without being affected by the current Canada Post strike, some of us sentimental luddites will struggle in this holiday season if it drags on. We will miss the joy of sending that glittery card with a heartfelt note that will brighten someone’s day, and know it will never be substituted by a generic greeting and Santa emoji sent via text. Donald Trump Jr. has reportedly emerged as a pivotal figure in the transition process, exerting significant influence over the formation of his father Donald Trump’s cabinet The eldest son of the President-elect has played a crucial role in selecting candidates, prioritizing loyalty over experience for top administration positions, according to sources familiar with the situation, Reuters reported. Sources close to the transition, including political allies, donors, and personal friends, revealed, the news report said, that Donald Trump Jr. has helped shape critical appointments, including championing Senator JD Vance as a potential vice-presidential pick and blocking former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from joining the cabinet. Reuters sources, which include political allies, donors, and personal friends, reported that Don Jr. has played a key role in promoting or blocking candidates, notably championing Senator JD Vance as Trump’s running mate and preventing former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from joining the cabinet. In addition to his involvement in the transition, Don Jr. is set to join conservative venture capital fund 1789 Capital. However, the news report citing sources said that he will continue to host his politics-focused podcast and support candidates who align with his father 's political philosophy. Despite his growing influence, Don Jr. is unlikely to be involved in day-to-day White House operations, though he will offer advice to his dad . Donald Trump Jr.’s primary focus has been ensuring that cabinet picks are loyal to Trump and share his anti-establishment worldview, according to the report. This includes a preference for protectionist economic policies and a reduction in military interventions and foreign aid. The news report pointed out that Trump Jr.'s advocacy for certain candidates, however, may face significant challenges, as two of his favored choices— Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for US health official and Tulsi Gabbard for intelligence chief—could encounter a difficult Senate confirmation process. Kennedy, an environmental activist, has drawn controversy over his anti-vaccine views, while Gabbard has been criticized for her past comments on Russia and Syria. Further complicating matters, Donald Trump Jr. was a key figure in lobbying for Vance to be Trump’s running mate. While Vance remains popular among Trump’s base, his anti-corporate rhetoric and opposition to Ukraine aid have raised concerns among some donors. However, Trump ultimately embraced Vance, providing Don Jr. with additional political influence during the transition, a source was reported to have said. According to sources close to the matter, as per the report, Donald Trump Jr. was particularly keen on securing a prominent position for his personal friend and former U.S. ambassador to Germany, Ric Grenell, as Secretary of State. However, despite his advocacy, President-elect Trump ultimately chose Senator Marco Rubio for the role. Two of the sources close to Donald Trump Jr. said, the report stated, that he has not been involved in all personnel decisions and is not working full-time on the transition or from Mar-a-Lago. His role has largely focused on high-level appointments, with little influence expected over lower-level personnel vetting, according to one of the sources. These sources clarified that Don Jr.'s involvement in the transition process remains strategic, rather than exhaustive.Chargers QB Justin Herbert does not practice because of left ankle injury

The government also intends to provide new technology, tools and resources to the Canada Border Services Agency to seek out fentanyl using chemical detection, artificial intelligence and canine teams. The union representing rank-and-file Mounties is welcoming the federal plan unveiled in the fall economic update Monday. Money, to be spread over six fiscal years, is earmarked for the RCMP, Public Safety Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency and the cyberspies at the Communications Security Establishment. RCMP members enforce laws between official points of entry and investigate criminal activities related to the border. National Police Federation president Brian Sauvé says members have been protecting the border with limited resources, and the new money will allow them to continue delivering on their mandate. Aaron McCrorie, the border services agency’s vice-president of intelligence and enforcement, said in a recent interview that irregular migration and smuggling of drugs such as fentanyl are common concerns for Canada and the United States. “These aren’t concerns that are unique to the United States. We share those same concerns,” he said. “In that sense, it really speaks to the need for us to work collaboratively.” McCrorie said the Canadian border agency is working closely with U.S. counterparts including Customs and Border Protection, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Homeland Security, as well as with agencies in Britain, Australia and New Zealand. “Criminal enterprises, organized crime, they don’t respect international boundaries. They collaborate, they exploit weaknesses in the system,” McCrorie said. “And so the best way to confront them is to is to collaborate on our side, fill those gaps, support each other’s efforts.” He said Canada’s border agency has two targeting officers embedded with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the American agency plans to soon send a targeting officer to Canada.

Robert Fernandez was a 17-year-old with a sense of wanderlust when he enlisted in the Navy in August 1941. Four months later, he was a cook aboard the USS Curtiss docked at Pearl Harbor the morning of the cataclysmic Japanese surprise attack on Dec. 7. “I just thought I was gonna go dancing all the time, have a good time, see the world,” Fernandez recalled in 2016. “What’d I do? I got caught in the war.” Fernandez, who died Wednesday at age 100 in Lodi, California, was among the hundreds of service members who survived the attack. His death leaves barely more than a dozen surviving Pearl Harbor veterans. Fernandez planned to attend the annual commemoration of the attack in Hawaii last weekend, but a downturn in his health forced him to cancel at the last minute. His death was announced in a post on the social platform X by Pacific Historic Parks. Fernandez was busying himself in the ship’s mess the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, anticipating liberty later in the day. When the ship’s alarms when off, he raced up to the deck of the Curtiss, a seaplane tender. A plane flew so close he felt he could reach out and touch it. “And the pilot didn’t even look at me; he just kept on going,” Fernandez said in 2016 for the Library of Congress’s Veterans History Project. “I just run right home to my battle station.” “All I could see was a red ball,” he said, referring to the rising sun emblem on the plane. He was scared. “My knees were knocking,” he said. “I seen a couple guys on the deck just praying and praying and praying.” Fernandez’s battle station was three decks below, where he was sealed up “like they do in a submarine,” he said. His job was to pass ammunition to the gunners. The Curtiss was one of few ships that managed to get underway during the attack. The ship’s crew sighted the periscope of a Japanese midget submarine in the harbor and fired. Shipboard gunners hit a Japanese plane, which crashed into the Curtiss. Minutes later, a Japanese dive bomber struck the ship and damaged several decks. Twenty-one crew members of the Curtiss died that day, with many more wounded. Fernandez served aboard the ship for the rest of the war. It saw service during the battles at Midway, Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands. He was discharged from the Navy in 1947.FBI Director Christopher Wray announced his resignation today, which will be effective next month when Biden-Harris leave and Trump-Vance enter: The F.B.I. director, Christopher A. Wray, told bureau employees on Wednesday that he intends to resign in January, bowing to the reality that President-elect Donald J. Trump had publicly declared his desire to replace him. The announcement comes after Mr. Trump said in late November that he intended to nominate Kash Patel, a longtime loyalist, to run the F.B.I., and more than two years before Mr. Wray’s 10-year term would have expired. His resignation would likely mean that Paul Abbate, the deputy F.B.I. director, would run the bureau at least until the end of April, when he is set to retire. Over more than seven years, Mr. Wray oversaw one of the most consequential and tumultuous periods in the bureau’s history, juggling high-profile criminal investigations of political figures, heated congressional inquiries and two attempted assassinations of Mr. Trump. The full post from @Julie_Kelly2: Chris Wray’s legacy will be turning the world’s most powerful law enforcement agency into a domestic terror operation that includes raiding the home of the former president, entrapping individuals into politically-oriented hoaxes like Whitmer fednapping, colluding with Big Tech to protect the Biden crime family by censoring Americans, and using the FBI counterterrorism task force to investigate, raid, and arrest nearly 1,600 Americans who protested the 2020 election on January 6. His failures include record crime, a bleeding southern border, out of control fentanyl crisis, and historic low trust in the FBI. Seems impossible but the worst FBI director in US history. The damage he caused this country may never be fully repaired. And there's one ! Oh, and does anybody want to ask Wray why somebody who broke wind a hundred yards from the Capitol on January 6th was tracked down within days but there's still been no movement on identifying the pipe bomb suspects? Europe must be ready to fill the potential gaps in funding and weapons for Ukraine that may arise when U.S. President-elect Donald Trump takes office, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said Friday. In an exclusive sit-down interview with VOA Eastern European Bureau chief Myroslava Gongadze, Sikorski noted that Trump and fellow Republicans appear reluctant to continue robust U.S. support for Ukraine, and he said it would be crucial to leverage frozen Russian assets to sustain Ukraine's defense. Sikorski also called on EU nations to increase defense spending to meet the challenges posed by Russia’s aggression. Sikorski said solidarity between the EU and the U.S. remains vital to sustaining Ukraine’s fight, deterring further Russian aggression and safeguarding democratic values on the continent. The interview has been edited for brevity and clarity. VOA: We start with the latest development, specifically on Russia using ballistic missiles in Ukraine, basically testing ballistic missiles on the civilian population. Do you see this as a new escalation of the war, and what should the West’s response be? Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski: There's a lot of noise, as you know, as to what exactly hit Ukraine. Russia has been using ballistic missiles throughout this war, but this is alleged to have been an intercontinental ballistic missile — which normally has a different use, which, if it is the case, is on the one hand an escalation and a signal, but on the other hand also an act of desperation that Putin is unable to win in this war, and we see signs of the Russian economy in real stress. We have reports of Russian soldiers deserting. And of course, inviting mercenaries from North Korea is not exactly a sign of strength. VOA: Still, what would be Poland’s response, and how are you concerned about this latest development? You advocated for extending the air defense over part of Ukraine, western Ukraine. NATO and Brussels didn't agree. Do you think it's time to reconsider? Sikorski: Maybe, let's be precise about what the stakes are. Poland is a victim of Russian missiles and drones. We assume that they lost control, and we've had several drones, as has Lithuania and Romania, and also cruise missiles. One of them traveled two-thirds of Poland and fell 10 kilometers from my house in western Poland. There was another incident in which a Russian missile launched at western Ukraine was shot down and the debris killed two Polish citizens, obviously, on our side of the border. We also had Russian cruise missiles breaching our airspace briefly in order to hit Lviv from the west, and there is no legal or operational doubt that once this stuff is in our airspace, we have the right to shoot it down, but when we do that over our territory, the debris damages something or can kill someone. So, the debate is about whether the right of self-defense extends only to one's own airspace or to the immediate area of a neighboring country, particularly when that neighboring country is asking us to shoot Russian missiles over its territory. And you can have a genuine difference of opinion as to this issue. I personally think that when the Russians send missiles or drones into another country, the least they can expect is that they'll lose the missile or the drone. VOA: So, would you be lobbying NATO on this idea of extending protection of airspace over Ukraine? Sikorski: We've had this discussion in the summer, and no decisions were taken by the alliance. And we do want to act as an alliance, because we have an integrated radar system and integrated anti-aircraft system, and we want our allies to be able to react to any further Russian escalations jointly. VOA: Recently, you opened a new military base near Kaliningrad. This base was planned for a long time. You signed the agreement with Americans a long, long, long time ago. However, now Russia is saying that this base will be a target. How significant is the opening of this base for Poland, and how do you respond to threats from Russia? Sikorski: Well, here we are in Warsaw. I mean, that was also a target. But the base would be capable of shooting down such Russian missiles as the one that hit Ukraine a couple of days ago because it is Aegis on shore — it's essentially an American destroyer built on land, and it could handle all types of missiles, not only ones aimed at the United States but also ones aimed at Europe. Transatlantic tensions VOA: Recently, you hosted five ministers of foreign affairs of European countries here in Warsaw, and you talked about boosting defense spending, U.S.-EU collaboration and supporting Ukraine. What are the biggest challenges you see in all those three areas? Sikorski: Well, we don't know what the new administration will do in regards to supporting Ukraine. If they wanted to threaten Putin with escalation, they would have to be ready to pass another package of support for Ukraine in Congress, and so far, we see no willingness to do that. If they don't pass another package, then it's up to Europe to step in, and it would be expensive. But the war is costing us about half a percent of GDP. We are a 15 trillion-euro economy. My view is that if we allowed Putin to win, the cost of deterring him then would be much higher. So, it's better to help Ukraine, particularly as we have resources and ready finance that only requires political will to take action — namely, the frozen Russian assets, and not only the loan, but the capital itself. So, $45 billion Ukraine is getting already. We could use the remaining $250 billion. My personal judgment is that by the end of next year, the Russian economy will be really in trouble, and therefore the challenge is to sustain Ukraine for one more year, and we have the money, so that's as regards support for Ukraine. Europe also needs to do more for its own sake, but also, if we are to gain respect in Washington, we need to show Donald Trump that we listened when he was right when he demanded that European countries spend more [on defense]. Poland has done more than its fair share. We are spending 4.7% of our GDP on defense next year, more than double, almost triple, of what some richer countries are doing. But we know the realities in Germany, and constitutional court judgments in Italy and France. We also have a high budget deficit, but we've had the success of euro bonds secured on the joint credibility of the entire European Union. And it turns out that the European Commission can raise money very cheaply in the financial markets for the COVID recovery plan, hundreds of billions of euros. VOA: Experts say that Europe needs $720 billion to invest in defense and military modernization in general. Do you feel that European countries are ready to spend, that they understand the needs and are now ready to move ahead with this? Sikorski: At the Warsaw meeting, we discussed this idea. It didn't find its way into the communique, but in our conversations, there seems to be general receptiveness to such a plan. VOA: President-elect Trump is promising to achieve peace. How do you see your relationship with the U.S. now, with the old administration going and the new administration coming? Sikorski: Everybody wants peace. If Ukraine capitulated, there would be peace. So, Putin also wants peace. The question is, on what conditions? You know, under communism, we had peace, but it was like the peace of a prison. So, the question is, will the U.N. Charter be respected, and will the security and border guarantees that Ukraine already had, including from Russia, be respected? And the question is how to achieve it. The war will end, not when Ukraine stops fighting. In that case, there would simply be no Ukraine. The war will end when Putin stops fighting. So, what needs to happen is for Putin to come to the judgment that the war was a mistake and that it cannot be won at an acceptable price. And I think he's actually closer to it than he pretends. He is all braggadocio. In fact, it's a catastrophic outcome so far, and he's in trouble. He's just trying to position himself into hypothetical negotiations. But the United States, Europe and Ukraine have stronger cards than he thinks. VOA: Were you able, or will you be planning to deliver this understanding to the newly elected U.S. president? Sikorski: I'm in touch with his former officials and the people who are being talked of as future officials. Our president has been in touch with Donald Trump all along. He calls him his friend, an American hero. We hope that that personal relationship will also be effective. VOA: He [Trump] pushed Europe to put more in defense, and Europe may have to stand alone. He said that Europe has to take responsibility for its security. Sikorski: Given that America cannot handle two conflicts at the same time, and given that successive U.S. presidents have told us frankly that for them, their competition with China is the number one issue, we should take greater responsibility for our security. VOA: And Europe is ready? Sikorski: Europe is always a little tardy, because we are democracies, because you always have to make choices between guns and butter, and our societies prefer butter. But I think the scale of Russian atrocities, the pictures of civilian targets being hit, the threat of what Putin is trying to cause, which is another wave of millions of refugees — this should be a wake-up call to all Europeans.Independent TDs are seeking as many as three junior ministerial roles as well as a super junior appointment as part of Government negotiations, but the role of Ceann Comhairle remains up for grabs. It is understood that the two main parties have indicated a willingness to give those in the regional group of Independents two minister of state roles as well as a super junior role, which would allow that person attend Cabinet. However, the group of Independents is pushing for more than this with one indicating that “we might get one more” before adding that “it’s hard to keep everyone happy”. The group of non-party TDs is also seeking the backing of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael to ensure Verona Murphy is appointed Ceann Comhairle next week. But one source indicated that Micheál Martin "still has some work to do" to convince party members to back her for the powerful position, with veteran TD John McGuinness entering the race alongside outgoing Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl. Mr McGuinness filed his nomination papers to fill the position as the Dáil's chair on Thursday. He told the Irish Examiner that Mr Martin was aware of his decision. He said he had been nominated by "a smattering" of people across parties and said reform of the Dáil is needed. "I'm in the Dáil for 27 years and know the workings inside and out. I know the changes that need to be made to allow members go front and centre to make it more democratic. I see reform as being a centrepiece of this work. I see the members being central to that." The vote to fill the Ceann's chair will be held on Wednesday when the 34th Dáil sits for the first time. Fianna Fáil sources said they believe that the party's TDs would "much rather" vote for one of their own than Ms Murphy. While some said the Wexford TD had "annoyed" Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael in previous dealings across the Dáil chamber, one party TD said that it was "not personal". "Why wouldn't we want to see one of our TDs elected to the role?" they said. Others questioned whether Mr Martin and Taoiseach Simon Harris could even promise the role to anyone given that it is one of the rare instances of a secret ballot in Irish politics. In 2020, the Government's nominee for Leas Ceann Comhairle Fergus O'Dowd was beaten by Galway TD Catherine Connolly in a shock result. A Fianna Fáil TD questioned whether Mr Martin would leave himself open to a similar result. Meanwhile, the Social Democrats will continue discussions with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael around government formation next week, the party has decided. Deputy leader Cian O'Callaghan has said that he expects the party's five dealbreakers to come into focus when they meet with Micheál Martin and Simon Harris again. With this in mind, it was decided that talks will also continue with Sinn Féin and Labour. Labour will meet with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael on Friday, but the growing expectation is that the party will not go into government. The Social Democrats negotiating team, made up of Mr O'Callaghan, Jennifer Whitmore, and Gary Gannon, had met with the Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael ministers on Wednesday and updated the party on Thursday. "We reported that the meetings had been positive and constructive with a good exchange of views," Mr O'Callaghan said. He said there were detailed discussions with the two leaders around climate, housing, disability, healthcare, and childcare. The Social Democrats outlined its red line issues during the campaign and said it intends to stand by these. He said there was "some interest" shown in the proposal to have a senior minister for disability. "I wouldn't say it was rejected outright or anything like that but it was very initial discussions that we were having in those areas," Mr O'Callaghan said. The most challenging topic of the discussions was in terms of climate, he said, but added there were further challenges in other areas as well.LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 26, 2024-- Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Charlie , banking* for 62+ Americans, launched CharlieSaver , the most comprehensive source for senior discounts nationwide. CharlieSaver has scoured stores all across America to identify over 20,000 senior discounts across 1,000 shopping centers. CharlieSaver is free to use and available to all older Americans, not just Charlie customers. Senior discounts are an excellent way for older Americans to stretch their budget and make the most of the hard work they've put in over the years. This is especially true given that nearly half of older Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck, and over 17 million American adults over 65 are economically insecure. At the same time, there are thousands of senior discounts available to this population that are difficult to find and impossible to keep track of. Older Americans could be missing out on hundreds of dollars in savings each year because there is no way to know about all the discounts available to them, and many retailers only offer a discount when asked directly by a customer. CharlieSaver does the important work of gathering all senior discounts in one simple-to-search website. CharlieSaver will continue to expand as new deals are discovered and more stores and restaurants join in to offer these valuable discounts. Charlie is also encouraging the public to share any discounts they find that are not listed on the platform and invites retailers to reach out if they want their senior discount included in CharlieSaver. CharlieSaver is Charlie’s latest effort to empower older Americans to make the most out of their money and keep it safe. Last week, Charlie announced Family FraudShield , a first-of-its-kind financial conversation guide aimed at helping people discuss financial fraud with their older parents and relatives. In June, Charlie introduced SpeedBump , a proprietary combination of pauses, alerts, and real-time education introduced at the exact moments customers are most vulnerable to fraud. After years of planning, preparation and investment, 2024 marked the first time that residents and visitors could see, feel and experience the benefits of redevelopment. Not only was this the year that major projects were completed, but a number of exciting plans were also confirmed for 2025 and beyond. The year started with the official reopening of Bolton Central Library in January, following a £4.43m renovation to provide an expanded children’s area, improved social spaces, updated digital facilities and the brand-new Café Crescent. Bolton Council Leader Cllr Nick Peel and Deputy Leader Cllr Akhtar Zaman visit the newly opened homes at the Moor Lane development (Image: Bolton Council) Time kept ticking on, and in February the council intervened to repair and restore the clock tower at Bolton Train Station. While regeneration and new developments are vital, the move was said to have underscored a commitment to protecting and enhancing the borough’s many great heritage assets. Cllr Hamid Khurram, Cabinet Member responsible for Transport, with the newly restored train station clock tower (Image: Bolton Council) Elsewhere in the borough, the council is working with Heritage England, investors and other partners to bring historic buildings like Hall i’ th’ Wood, Number 1 Newport Street, and Rock Hall back into public use. In March, then Mayor of Bolton Cllr Mohammed Ayub cut the ribbon at Elizabeth Park, the town centre’s first new green space in over a century. Featuring a central lawn, broad flower beds, a rain garden, generous seating and a public performance space, the park would go on to win “Project of the Year” at the regional Civil Engineering Contractors Association awards. Regeneration is happening right across the borough, with Farnworth among the district centres benefiting from significant investment. Farnworth has previously secured funding from the Future High Street Fund and the Greater Manchester Investment Fund. This had already seen the Leisure Centre being upgraded, new homes , shops, and a community hub at Farnworth Green, as well as streetscape improvements which started in April. In May, residents were consulted on a new long term plan for Farnworth which will see £20m invested in the town, spread over the next ten years with projects and priority areas decided by local people. Bolton Market Food Hall (Image: Paul Heyes) Regeneration goes far beyond just new buildings and major investment, but also means creating vibrant communities and building a sense of pride in where people live. Bolton has a well-deserved reputation for its performing arts, major events, and cultural scene and this plays a vital role in attracting people to live, work , visit, study and invest locally. Once again, Bolton took centre stage when it was declared this year’s Greater Manchester Town of Culture in May. Announcing his decision, the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said: "I'm confident that we'll see the very best of Bolton over the next 12 months and that people will come from far and wide to see what this brilliant town has to offer." During the summer, work to build the £40m first of its kind, Bolton Institute of Medical Sciences was also completed ahead of welcoming its first students for the new term. June was a big month for food lovers as the traders at the Bolton Market Food Hall opened for businesses, just in time for live screenings of UEFA European Football Championship. Part of the wider £5.9m market transformation, the hall offers cuisine from around the world and has proved a massive hit with customers. Bolton Market offers fresh, locally sourced produce at reasonable prices, making it the ideal shopping destination for the many new residents who are expected to move to the town centre as part of the regeneration masterplan. This took a major step forward in July when local developers Watson secured land at Church Wharf to deliver a £75m project to include a hotel and 400 new homes. Watson continued to invest in the community as headline sponsors of August’s Bolton Food and Drink Festival. Food and Drink Festival (Image: Paul Heyes) After Storm Lilian put the event in doubt, council staff, local businesses and volunteers worked through the night to ensure the festival could go ahead. Major events are a key part of Bolton’s Visitor Economy Strategy, a plan to drive footfall, enhance the quality of life of residents and boost the economy. Off the back of the strategy, Bolton was chosen in September as a pilot area for the Greater Manchester Visitor Economy Accelerator Programme. The aim of the programme is to foster growth and increase collaboration within the tourism and hospitality sectors through masterclasses, workshops and one-to-one support. Wellsprings Innovation Hub (Image: Bolton Council) September also gave residents their first look at the Wellsprings Innovation Hub backed by £6.9m from the Towns Fund and a further £1.4m from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Since then, entrepreneurs and business start-ups from the creative and technology sectors have been applying for office spaces at the facility which opens in early 2025. The Wellsprings offers co-working space and meeting rooms, call pods, bike storage and kitchen facilities. October brought one of the year’s most significant announcements with news that the demolition of Crompton Place is due to start in 2025 with work already underway to appoint a developer for the site. Bolton Council Leader, Cllr Nick Peel, said: “The redevelopment of Crompton Place is a once in a generation opportunity to replace and reimagine an underused and unappealing building with something everyone in Bolton can be proud of. “It also gives us the opportunity to enhance Victoria Square and open up a direct link to Bradshawgate, with various buildings and open spaces on the site, rather than the single large building we have at present. “This will be our flagship redevelopment project, signalling to the private sector that Bolton Council is serious about regeneration and thereby attracting even more commercial investment.” The announcement followed years of work by Bolton Council to support existing tenants to relocate to other areas of the town centre, as part of a plan to consolidate a quality retail offer around the Market Place. This culminated in November with the grand opening of the shopping centre’s new Primark. Store Manager, Caroline Wood, said: “We’ve been in the heart of Bolton now for 48 years so this is an important move for us, and we’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response already from shoppers who’ve joined us today.” In December, attention turned to the enormous potential of some of the town centre’s other buildings. During a business event, property owners and potential investors were given advice and information about converting existing buildings for residential use in the centre. This followed a similar successful event focused on the hospitality sector, and a planned event in February focusing on buildings with potential to be used as office space. The year ended with even more exciting news, as the first residents moved into their new homes at Moor Lane. Bolton at Home and Step Places have jointly developed the 214-home Neighbourhood Moor Lane development in partnership with Bolton Council. Deansgate Gardens (Image: Bolton Council) Developments like Moor Lane and the nearby Deansgate Gardens, among others, are expected to bring an additional 5,000 people to live in the town centre, creating vibrant urban neighbourhoods and supporting local businesses. Reflecting back on the year, Bolton Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Akhtar Zaman, said: “In January, I said that 2024 would be the year that Bolton residents would first see and feel the tangible benefits of regeneration. “As we come to the end of the year, we can already see the positive impact that projects like the new Food Hall and renovated library are having. “As Moor Lane and Deansgate Gardens welcome their first residents, this will boost the town centre economy and build market confidence to attract more inward investment. “Now is the time to build on this success and we look forward to more exciting announcements in 2025.”

TBILISI (AP): Former soccer player Mikheil Kavelashvili was formally inaugurated as president of Georgia on Sunday, cementing the ruling party’s grip in what the opposition calls a blow to the country’s European Union (EU) aspirations. Outgoing pro-Western Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili said Sunday morning that she would vacate her residence at the Orbeliani Palace in Tbilisi, but insisted she was still the legitimate office holder. “I will come out of here, come out to you and be with you ... . This presidential residence was a symbol as long as there was a president here who was legitimate. I bring legitimacy with me,” Zourabichvili told a crowd of supporters outside the palace. She called Kavelashvili’s inauguration a “parody”. Kavelashvili, 53, who was the only candidate on the ballot, easily won the vote earlier in December, given the Georgian Dream party’s control of a 300-seat electoral college that replaced direct presidential elections in 2017. It is made up of members of parliament, municipal councils and regional legislatures. In his speech on Sunday, Kavelashvili promised to be “everyone’s president, regardless of whether they like me or not”. He called for the nation to unite behind him around “shared values, the principles of mutual respect, and the future we should build together”. Georgian Dream retained control of Parliament in the South Caucasus nation in an October 26 election that the opposition alleges was rigged with Moscow’s help. The party has vowed to continue pushing towards accession in the European Union, but also wants to “reset” ties with Russia. BOYCOTTED Georgia’s outgoing president and main pro-Western parties have boycotted the post-election parliamentary sessions and demanded a rerun of the ballot. In 2008, Russia fought a brief war with Georgia, which led to Moscow’s recognition of two breakaway regions as independent, and an increase in the Russian military presence in South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Critics have accused Georgian Dream –established by Bidzina Ivanishvili, a shadowy billionaire who made his fortune in Russia – of becoming increasingly authoritarian and tilted towards Moscow, accusations the ruling party has denied. The party recently pushed through laws similar to those used by the Kremlin to crack down on freedom of speech and LGBTQ+ rights. Georgian Dream’s decision last month to suspend talks on their country’s bid to join the EU added to the opposition’s outrage and galvanised protests. Protesters in front of the parliament building on Sunday held red cards, in reference to Kavelashvili’s career in soccer. “Because today our president is a footballer, we are showing him a red card. The next step will be sending him off the pitch. The Georgian people will definitely do this, because it was a circus that they have held today in the parliament,” protester Sofia Shamanidi told The Associated Press. NEW ELECTIONS Zourabichvili, 72, was born in France to parents with Georgian roots and had a successful career with the French foreign ministry before President Mikheil Saakashvili named her Georgia’s top diplomat in 2004. Constitutional changes made the president’s job largely ceremonial before Zourabichvili was elected by popular vote with Georgian Dream’s support in 2018. She became sharply critical of the ruling party, accusing it of pro-Russia policies, and Georgian Dream unsuccessfully tried to impeach her. Zourabichvili has rejected government claims that the opposition was fomenting violence. “We are not demanding a revolution,” she told The Associated Press. “We are asking for new elections, but in conditions that will ensure that the will of the people will not be misrepresented or stolen again.” Who is the new president? Georgia’s opposition has mocked Kavelashvili for lacking higher education. He was a striker in the English Premier League for Manchester City and played for several clubs in the Swiss Super League. He was elected to parliament in 2016 on the Georgian Dream ticket, and in 2022 co-founded the People’s Power political movement, which was allied with Georgian Dream and become known for its strong anti-Western rhetoric. Kavelashvili was one of the authors of a controversial law requiring organizations that receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad to register as “pursuing the interest of a foreign power,” similar to a Russian law used to discredit critical organizations. The EU, which granted Georgia candidate status in December 2023 on condition that the country meets the bloc’s recommendations, put its accession on hold and cut financial support in June following approval of the “foreign influence” law. HOW DID PROTESTS UNFOLD? Thousands of demonstrators converged on the parliament building every night after the government announced the suspension of EU accession talks on November 28. Riot police used water cannons and tear gas almost daily to disperse and beat scores of protesters, some of whom threw fireworks at police officers and built barricades on the capital’s central boulevard. Hundreds were detained and over 100 treated for injuries. Several journalists were beaten by the police, and media workers accused the authorities of using thugs to deter people from attending anti-government rallies, which Georgian Dream denies. The crackdown has drawn strong condemnation from the United States and EU officials.

BEIRUT — Israel's military launched airstrikes across Lebanon on Monday, unleashing explosions throughout the country and killing at least 31 while Israeli leaders appeared to be closing in on a negotiated ceasefire with the Hezbollah militant group. Israeli strikes hit commercial and residential buildings in Beirut as well as in the port city of Tyre. Military officials claimed they targeted areas known as Hezbollah strongholds. They issued evacuation orders for Beirut's southern suburbs, and strikes landed across the city, including meters from a Lebanese police base and the city's largest public park. The barrage came as officials indicated they were nearing agreement on a ceasefire, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Security Cabinet prepared to discuss an offer on the table. Bulldozers remove the rubble of a destroyed building Monday that was hit in an Israeli airstrike in Dahiyeh, in the southern suburb of Beirut, Lebanon. Foreign ministers from the world’s leading industrialized nations also expressed cautious optimism Monday about possible progress on a ceasefire. “Knock on wood,” Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said as he opened the Group of Seven meeting outside Rome. “We are perhaps close to a ceasefire in Lebanon," he said. "Let's hope it's true and that there's no backing down at the last-minute.” A ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon was foremost on the agenda of the G7 meeting in Fiuggi, outside Rome, that gathered ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, in the last G7 encounter of the Biden administration. For the first time, the G7 ministers were joined by their counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, as well as the Secretary General of the Arab League. Thick smoke, flames and debris erupt Monday from an Israeli airstrike that targeted a building in Tayouneh, Beirut, Lebanon. Meanwhile, massive explosions lit up Lebanon's skies with flashes of orange, sending towering plumes of smoke into the air as Israeli airstrikes pounded Beirut's southern suburbs Monday. The blasts damaged buildings and left shattered glass and debris scattered across nearby streets. Some of the strikes landed close to central Beirut and near Christian neighborhoods and other targets where Israel issued evacuation warnings, including in Tyre and Nabatiyeh province. Israeli airstrikes also hit the northeast Baalbek-Hermel region without warning. Lebanon's Health Ministry said Monday that 26 people were killed in southern Lebanon, four in the eastern Baalbek-Hermel province and one in Choueifat, a neighborhood in Beirut's southern suburbs that was not subjected to evacuation warnings on Monday. The deaths brought the total toll to 3,768 killed in Lebanon throughout 13 months of war between Israel and Hezbollah and nearly two months since Israel launched its ground invasion. Many of those killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hezbollah have been civilians, and health officials said some of the recovered bodies were so severely damaged that DNA testing would be required to confirm their identities. Israel claims to have killed more than 2,000 Hezbollah members. Lebanon's Health Ministry says the war has displaced 1.2 million people. Destroyed buildings stand Monday in the area of a village in southern Lebanon as seen from northern Israel. Israeli ground forces invaded southern Lebanon in early October, meeting heavy resistance in a narrow strip of land along the border. The military previously exchanged attacks across the border with Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group that began firing rockets into Israel the day after the war in Gaza began last year. Lebanese politicians have decried the ongoing airstrikes and said they are impeding ceasefire negotiations. The country's deputy parliament speaker accused Israel of ramping up its bombardment to pressure Lebanon to make concessions in indirect ceasefire negotiations with Hezbollah. Elias Bousaab, an ally of the militant group, said Monday that the pressure has increased because "we are close to the hour that is decisive regarding reaching a ceasefire." Israeli officials voiced similar optimism Monday about prospects for a ceasefire. Mike Herzog, the country's ambassador to Washington, earlier in the day told Israeli Army Radio that several points had yet to be finalized. Though any deal would require agreement from the government, Herzog said Israel and Hezbollah were "close to a deal." "It can happen within days," he said. Israeli officials have said the sides are close to an agreement that would include withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and a pullback of Hezbollah fighters from the Israeli border. But several sticking points remain. A member of the Israeli security forces inspects an impact site Sunday after a rocket fired from Lebanon hit an area in Rinatya, outskirts of Tel Aviv, Israel. After previous hopes for a ceasefire were dashed, U.S. officials cautioned that negotiations were not yet complete and noted that there could be last-minute hitches that either delay or destroy an agreement. "Nothing is done until everything is done," White House national security spokesman John Kirby said Monday. The proposal under discussion to end the fighting calls for an initial two-month ceasefire during which Israeli forces would withdraw from Lebanon and Hezbollah would end its armed presence along the southern border south of the Litani River. The withdrawals would be accompanied by an influx of thousands more Lebanese army troops, who have been largely sidelined in the war, to patrol the border area along with an existing U.N. peacekeeping force. Western diplomats and Israeli officials said Israel demands the right to strike in Lebanon if it believes Hezbollah is violating the terms. The Lebanese government says such an arrangement would authorize violations of the country's sovereignty. On paper, being more sustainable and eco-friendly while shopping sounds great—so why don't more people do it? There is growing consumer consciousness about the environmental impact of where people choose to shop and the sustainability of the products they buy. According to McKinsey, over 60% of individuals surveyed in 2020 said they would be willing to pay more for a product that is packaged in an eco-friendly way. Since 2019, products marketed as being environmentally sustainable have seen a 28% growth in revenue compared to 20% for products with no such marketing, a 2023 McKinsey and NielsenIQ report found. Much of this is thanks to the preferences and attitudes of Gen Z, who, on average, care more than their older counterparts about being informed shoppers. The younger generation also has more social justice and environmental awareness altogether. Shoppers are willing to spend around 9.7% more on a product they know is sourced or manufactured sustainably, with 46% saying they would do so explicitly because they want to reduce their environmental footprint, according to a 2024 PwC report. Sustainable practices consumers look for from companies include production methods, packaging, and water conservation. But despite the growing consciousness around being more environmentally responsible, consumer actions don't always align with their values. In psychology, this is defined as the "say-do gap": the phenomenon wherein people openly express concern and intention around an issue, but fail to take tangible action to make a change. According to the Harvard Business Review in 2019, most consumers (65%) say they want to buy from brands that promote sustainability, but only 1 in 4 follow through. So why don't people actually shop sustainably, despite how much they express a preference for eco-friendly products—and how can we close the gap? The RealReal examined reports from the Harvard Business Review and other sources to explore why some shoppers want to buy sustainably but struggle to follow through. This lack of action isn't due to a lack of caring—in many cases, it's hard to know how to be a sustainable consumer and other factors are often outside of shoppers' control. But the more people shop sustainably, the easier and more accessible that market will be for everyone—making it much easier for folks to buy aligned with their values. There are many obstacles preventing shoppers from upholding eco-friendly habits as much as they may want to—but not all of these barriers are necessarily real, or accurately understood. Shopping sustainably simply isn't convenient or accessible for many. Those who live in apartment buildings are 50% less likely to recycle , according to Ipsos. Reasons for this can vary from lack of space to buildings being excluded altogether because of recycling contamination issues. Many believe that sustainable products are too expensive or of a lower quality. The former is often true, which does create a hurdle for many: The manufacturing processes and materials for sustainable products are pricey. For instance, organic cotton requires an intensive production process free of certain chemicals or pesticides; by definition, true eco-friendly products can't be mass-produced, further upping their price tag. Using recycled materials for packaging, or obtaining an eco certification, can also be expensive. However, although the narrative of eco-friendly products being more expensive is true, there is often more of an effort to use better quality materials that last longer than their noneco-friendly counterparts. This could end up saving consumers money in the long run: By paying more upfront, they can get more wear out of sustainable fashion, for instance. There is also undeniable political rhetoric surrounding eco-friendly products—however, despite many Conservative politicians decrying sustainable products, members of all generations are increasingly choosing to prioritize shopping sustainably regardless of their political affiliation, according to research from NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business . This finding shows a trend toward seeing sustainability as a nonpartisan subject everyone can benefit from, no matter where they lie on the political spectrum. Some might think eco-friendly clothing, in particular, is not fashion-forward; after all, many of the top clothing retailers in the world partake in fast fashion. However, brands are increasingly being recognized as 'cool' and 'trendy' for supporting environmentally ethical practices, particularly as younger generations prioritize sustainability, as noted before. Many increasingly popular online stores are taking advantage of this paradigm shift by offering secondhand shopping options that are not only fashionable, but also more affordable, like ThredUp or Poshmark. Additionally, many legacy large-name brands are hopping on the sustainability movement and are gaining appreciation from loyal customers. Amazon's Climate Pledge Friendly program partners with third-party certification bodies to make it easier for shoppers to identify eco-friendly products as they browse the website. H&M's newly launched H&M Rewear program debuts a resale platform that allows the resale of all clothing brands—not just their own. Similarly, Patagonia's Worn Wear program allows shoppers to trade in and buy used gear and clothing. The federal government is also working to close this gap. The Environmental Protection Agency's Safer Choice program is attempting to make sustainable shopping easier for consumers and companies alike. It includes a directory of certified products, a list of safer chemicals to look out for on labels, a "Safer Choice" label that products can earn to denote they are eco-friendly, and resources for manufacturers looking to adopt more sustainable practices. Most of all, though, the biggest way shoppers can shift toward sustainable shopping is through their behaviors and attitudes amongst their peers and communities. Studies show that humans largely care what others think of their actions; the more shoppers make environmentally conscious shopping the norm, the more others will follow suit. From an economic perspective, the more consumers shop eco-friendly, the more affordable and accessible these products will become, too: Sustainable products are currently more expensive because they are not in high demand. Once demand rises, production rates and prices can lower, making these products more accessible for all. Story editing by Carren Jao. Additional editing by Kelly Glass. NBA: 7 ejected late in Heat's comeback win over Rockets

'Bootkitty' First Bootloader to Take Aim at LinuxDALLAS — If President-elect Donald Trump makes good on his threat to start charging Mexico and Canada a 25% tariff on all products coming into the United States, Texas could be on the receiving end of an economic body blow. Mexico is Texas’ largest trading partner, while Canada comes in second. Renowned economist Ray Perryman says the tariffs could cost the state tens of billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of jobs. “Texas alone would lose about 370,000 jobs if something like this came into place and stayed in place,” Perryman said on Y’all-itics. “It has the potential to have profound impacts. We're looking at about a $47 billion loss in gross product in Texas.” President-elect Trump says he wants those countries to do more to stop undocumented immigrants from coming into the U.S. If the 25% tariffs were to become reality, the Perryman Group crunched the numbers to determine the impact. And it’s severe. According to the economic and financial analysis firm, Americans would be paying an extra $20 billion for food products, $19 billion more for trucks and cars, an additional $22 billion for electronics, and another $18 billion for oil and other petroleum products. “So a lot of things that we use every day filling up our cars, driving our cars, owning our cars, eating, you know, our phones, our devices, our televisions, all of those things come into play when you start talking about these countries, because it's a huge amount of economic activity,” Perryman said. These 25% tariffs would also threaten the free trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada, known as the USMCA, initially proposed by then President Trump in 2018 and taking effect on July 1, 2020. Because of that agreement, Perryman says we essentially enjoy free trade back and forth between our countries, with a few exceptions. But the tariffs, he says, would almost certainly lead to retaliation by Mexico and Canada. “If everything that crosses the border is subject to a 25% tariff on our end, that's not free trade. That's the exact opposite of free trade,” Perryman warned. “I mean, just looking at the numbers, we see it lowering the GDP (gross domestic product) by almost 1%, about $250 billion, if this thing went in effect, and stayed in effect. Losing almost two million jobs in the country. I mean, it's a very major situation. What’s more, Dr. Perryman says tariffs would lead to inflation and the Federal Reserve might have to start raising interest rates again. He also explains how 25% tariffs would threaten the “Texas Miracle” of economic growth. But the economist says as a practical matter, once everyone realizes just how costly the tariffs are, some solution would likely be found quickly. Listen to the entire episode to learn more. Cheers!

Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler, who was aggressive in his oversight of cryptocurrencies and other financial markets, will step down from his post on Jan. 20. Gensler pushed changes that he said protected investors, but the industry and many Republicans bristled at what they saw as overreach. President-elect Donald Trump had promised during his campaign that he would remove Gensler. But Gensler on Thursday announced that he would be stepping down from his post on the day that Trump is inaugurated. Bitcoin has jumped 40% since Trump’s victory. It hit new highs Thursday and was nearing $100,000. Bitcoin moved notably higher still after Gensler's resignation was announced. Gensler's stance on the rise of cryptocurrencies was captured during a speech he gave during the first year of his chairmanship in 2021 where he described the market as “the Wild West.” “This asset class is rife with fraud, scams, and abuse in certain applications,” he said in a speech at the Aspen Security Forum. “There’s a great deal of hype and spin about how crypto assets work. In many cases, investors aren’t able to get rigorous, balanced, and complete information.” Under Gensler, the SEC brought actions against players in the crypto industry for fraud , wash trading and other violations, including as recently as last month when the commission brought fraud charges against three companies purporting to be market makers, along with nine individuals for trying to manipulate various crypto markets. Yet access to cryptocurrencies became more widespread under Gensler. In January, the SEC approved exchange-traded funds that track the spot price of bitcoin. With such ETFs, investors could get easier access to bitcoin without the huge overlays required to buy it directly. Gensler, however, acknowledged the SEC had denied earlier, similar applications for such ETFs, including Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, among the first to eventually be approved by the SEC. “Circumstances, however, have changed,” Gensler said, pointing to a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia that said the SEC failed to adequately explain its reasoning in rejecting Grayscale’s proposal. Even there, Gensler made sure not to endorse the merits of bitcoin. He pointed to how ETFs that hold precious metals are tracking prices of things that have “consumer and industrial users, while in contrast bitcoin is primarily a speculative, volatile asset that’s also used for illicit activity including ransomware, money laundering, sanction evasion, and terrorist financing.” Gensler was tested early in his tenure with the rise of the meme stock phenomenon that shocked the financial system in early 2021. Earlier this year, the SEC under Gensler pushed Wall Street to speed up how long it takes for trades of stocks to settle, one of the areas where the commission’s staff recommended changes following the reckoning created by GameStop , one of the first meme stocks. In the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, hordes of smaller-pocketed and novice investors suddenly piled into the stock of the struggling video-game retailer. During the height of the frenzy, several brokerages barred customers from buying GameStop after the clearinghouse that settles their trades demanded more cash to cover the increased risk created by its highly volatile price. In May 2024, new rules meant broker-dealers have to fully settle their trades within one business day of the trade date, down from the previous two. Critics of the SEC under Gensler have called many of the agency's proposals overly burdensome. The investment industry, for example, is pushing against a proposal to force some advisers and companies disclose more about their environmental, social and governance practices, otherwise known as ESG. Critics say the proposal is overly complex and increases the risk of investor confusion, while imposing unnecessary burdens and costs on funds. On Thursday, Gensler stood by the SEC's track record under his direction. “The staff and the Commission are deeply mission-driven, focused on protecting investors, facilitating capital formation, and ensuring that the markets work for investors and issuers alike," Gensler said in prepared remarks. “The staff comprises true public servants." Gensler previously served as Chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, leading the Obama Administration’s reform of the $400 trillion swaps market. He also was senior advisor to U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes in writing the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (2002) and was undersecretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance and assistant secretary of the Treasury from 1997-2001.casino bingo

Factbox-How Trump's new FTC chair views AI, Big Tech

NoneNEW YORK (AP) — Technology stocks are dragging down the market as Friday as Wall Street closes out a holiday-shortened week. The S&P 500 fell 1.6%, with more than 80% of stocks in the benchmark index losing ground. The benchmark index was managing to hold onto a modest gain for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 475 points, or 1.1%, to 42,850 as of 11:35 a.m. Eastern time. The Nasdaq composite fell 2%. Technology stocks were the biggest drag on the market Friday. Semiconductor giant Nvidia slumped 2.4%. Its enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes. Other Big Tech stocks losing ground included Microsoft, with a 1.9% decline. A wide range of retailers also fell. Amazon fell 2% and Best Buy slipped 1%. The sector is being closely watched for clues on how it performed during the holiday shopping season. Energy was the only sector within the S&P 500 rising. It gained 0.4% as crude oil prices rose 1.2%. Investors don't have much in the way of corporate or economic updates to review as the market moves closer to another standout annual finish. The S&P 500 is on track for a gain of just under 25% in 2024. That would mark a second consecutive yearly gain of more than 20%, the first time that has happened since 1997-1998. The gains have been driven partly by upbeat economic data showing that consumers continued spending and the labor market remained strong. Inflation, while still high, has also been steadily easing. A report on Friday showed that sales and inventory estimates for the wholesales trade industry fell 0.2% in November, following a slight gain in October. That weaker-than-expected report follows an update on the labor market Thursday that showed unemployment benefits held steady last week. The stream of upbeat economic data and easing inflation helped prompt a reversal in the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy this year. Expectations for interest rate cuts also helped drive market gains. The central bank recently delivered its third cut to interest rates in 2024. Even though Inflation has come closer to the central bank's target of 2%, it remains stubbornly above that mark and worries about it heating up again have tempered the forecast for more interest rate cuts. Inflation concerns have added to uncertainties heading into 2025, which include the labor market’s path ahead and shifting economic policies under incoming President Donald Trump. Worries have risen that Trump’s preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation , a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. Amedisys rose 4.5% after the home health care and hospice services provider agreed to extend the deadline for its sale to UnitedHealth Group. The Justice Department had sued to block the $3.3 billion deal, citing concerns he combination would hinder access to home health and hospice services in the U.S. The move to extend the deadline comes ahead of an expected shift in regulatory policy under Trump. The incoming administration is expected to have a more permissive approach to dealmaking and is less likely to raise antitrust concerns. In Asia, Japan’s benchmark index surged as the yen remained weak against the dollar. Stocks in South Korea fell after the main opposition party voted to impeach the country’s acting leader. Markets in Europe gained ground. Bond yields held relatively steady. The yield on the 10-year Treasury remained at 4.59% from late Thursday. The yield on the two-year Treasury slipped to 4.31% from 4.33% late Thursday. Wall Street will have more economic updates to look forward to next week, including reports on pending home sales and home prices. There will also be reports on U.S. construction spending and snapshots of manufacturing activity.President-elect Donald Trump’s team submitted an ethics plan guiding the conduct of its members throughout the transition period that does not appear to include provisions for one key member of the team: the president himself. “There does not appear to be a provision addressing the requirement for the president-elect to address his conflicts of interest,” said Valerie Smith Boyd, director of the Center for Presidential Transition at the nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service. CNN has asked the Trump transition for comment on why there is no provision addressing Trump’s potential conflicts of interest. During his first term, Trump was repeatedly criticized by ethics groups for potential conflicts of interest relating to his businesses and brands. Both Trump’s and his family’s foreign business ties have also come under intense scrutiny throughout his time in office and on the campaign trail. Still, after winning in 2016, Trump took some nominal steps toward alleviating ethical concerns before entering the White House by pledging to relinquish control of his companies and put his business holdings in a trust, which was controlled by his two sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. He has made no such assurances this time. Rather, Trump lately has added potential conflicts of interest with some of his latest business dealings. Much of his wealth these days is tied up in stock for Trump Media & Technology Group, a newly publicly traded company that owns his social media website TruthSocial. While campaigning, he hawked several new products capitalizing on his name and fame, including a line of watches, some retailing for $100,000, that he launched through an opaque licensing agreement with a company of undisclosed origins. CNN traced the business to a shopping plaza in Sheridan, Wyoming, that is the registered address for dozens of other companies. Trump and his sons also kickstarted a cryptocurrency venture just weeks before the election, even as he promised to push through an agenda favorable to Bitcoin enthusiasts and investors. Trump has not said how he would guarantee that he won’t pursue these policies – with potentially massive implications for financial markets and the future of the US dollar – in the interest of benefiting his family’s new enterprise. The ethics agreement, posted late Tuesday to the General Services Administration’s website , otherwise “does appear to comply with most of the requirements in the Presidential Transition Act,” a law governing the protocols around transition activities, said Boyd. Updates to that act requiring the ethics pledge were introduced by Trump ally Sen. Ron Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican, and signed into law by Trump in March 2020. The plan requires transition team members to “avoid both actual and apparent conflicts of interest,” to “safeguard classified information” and “non-public information and other information that is not readily available to the public.” It also prohibits team members who have participated in lobbying activities in the last year or are registered as lobbyists, and forbids team members from serving as registered foreign agents while serving the transition. Each team member is required to sign the code of ethical conduct detailing those provisions. Trump’s team blew past a pair of September and October deadlines to sign agreements with the Biden White House and General Services Administration laying the groundwork for a smooth transition. Democrats and watchdogs sounded the alarms over potential risks to national security and continuity between administrations in the absence of those agreements. Three weeks after the election, the Trump team submitted its ethics plan and signed the White House agreement, but skipped the GSA agreement, saying in a statement that the transition “will operate as a self-sufficient organization” and that its “organizational autonomy means a streamlined process.” Trump’s team also has yet to sign an agreement with the Department of Justice to begin processing the security clearances needed for staffers to access classified information during the transition period, White House officials said, adding that “progress has been made towards an agreement.” The Trump transition did not immediately respond to CNN’s inquiry regarding whether it would enter into the agreement before Inauguration Day. CNN previously reported that Trump’s transition team is bypassing traditional FBI background checks for at least some of his Cabinet picks while using private companies to conduct vetting of potential candidates for administration jobs, people close to the transition planning said. Trump and his allies believe the FBI system is slow and plagued with issues that could stymie the president-elect’s plan to quickly begin the work of implementing his agenda, people briefed on the plans said. Critics say the background checks sometimes turn up embarrassing information used to inflict political damage. When he takes office January 20, Trump will have the authority to make his own changes to the security clearance system, which is largely based on executive orders. For instance, he could charge individuals he trusts to adjudicate the information found during background investigations and make a determination on clearance status, rather than the traditional federal experts who have traditionally managed that process. Still, Boyd said it was “promising” that progress has been made in the transition process. “We all continue to hope that agreement will be signed because it will reduce confusion if the Trump team has people with federally-vetted background investigations ready to go on day one,” she said. Trump’s team declined to sign an agreement with the GSA unlocking access to federal resources like office space and secure communications equipment, which has also raised concerns. In the absence of that agreement, Boyd said, Trump’s team “may not be operating on a federally-approved secure network,” requiring federal agencies to find ways to protect the sensitive information they share with incoming officials. The White House on Tuesday night provided guidance to various agencies relating to “best practices to facilitate secure information sharing” with the Trump transition team if needed, a White House official said. White House deputy chief of staff Natalie Quillian met with the Agency Transition Directors Council, which is comprised of senior career leaders at agencies across the federal government, and the deputy chiefs of staff for each department on Wednesday morning to discuss next steps for working with Trump’s agency landing teams, the official said. The Trump transition team signing the White House agreement, Boyd said, is a “really important step.” “Both parties should be commended on reaching an agreement to share information. The most concerning scenario would be if the incoming president’s team was not communicating with federal agencies. Now that the communication is open, we’re in a better position for sharing information about national security risks,” Boyd said.

Biden administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies , as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, told reporters Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. The update from Neuberger is the latest development in a massive hacking operation that has alarmed national security officials, exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and laid bare China's hacking sophistication. The hackers compromised the networks of telecommunications companies to obtain customer call records and gain access to the private communications of “a limited number of individuals." Though the FBI has not publicly identified any of the victims, officials believe senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures are among those whose whose communications were accessed. Neuberger said officials did not yet have a precise sense how many Americans overall were affected by Salt Typhoon, in part because the Chinese were careful about their techniques, but a “large number" were in the Washington-Virginia area. Officials believe the goal of the hackers was to identify who owned the phones and, if they were “government targets of interest,” spy on their texts and phone calls, she said. The FBI said most of the people targeted by the hackers are "primarily involved in government or political activity.” Neuberger said the episode highlighted the need for required cybersecurity practices in the telecommunications industry, something the Federal Communications Commission is to take up at a meeting next month. “We know that voluntary cyber security practices are inadequate to protect against China, Russia and Iran hacking of our critical infrastructure,” she said. The Chinese government has denied responsibility for the hacking.

"The FBI is aware of numerous bomb threats and swatting incidents targeting incoming administration nominees and appointees, and we are working with our law enforcement partners," the agency said in a statement. Swatting refers to the practice in which police are summoned urgently to someone's house under false pretenses. Such hoax calls are common in the United States and have seen numerous senior political figures targeted in recent years. Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for Trump's transition team, earlier said that several appointees and nominees "were targeted in violent, unAmerican threats to their lives and those who live with them." Elise Stefanik, a Trump loyalist congresswoman tapped to be UN ambassador, said her residence in New York was targeted in a bomb threat. She said in a statement that she, her husband, and small son were driving home from Washington for the Thanksgiving holiday when they learned of the threat. Lee Zeldin, Trump's pick to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, said his home was targeted with a pipe bomb threat sent with a "pro-Palestinian themed message." The former congressman from New York said he and his family were not home at the time. Fox News Digital quoted unidentified sources saying that John Ratcliffe, Trump's nominee to head the CIA, and Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary pick, were also targeted. Ahead of his return to the House in January, Trump has already swiftly assembled a cabinet of loyalists, including several criticized for a severe lack of experience. The Republican, who appears set to avoid trial on criminal prosecutions related to attempts to overturn his 2020 election loss, was wounded in the ear in July in an assassination attempt during a campaign rally. The shooter was killed in counter-fire. In September, authorities arrested another man accused of planning to shoot at Trump while he played golf at his course in West Palm Beach, Florida. bur/sms/bjtIf one sits down to pen India’s economic history after Independence, it could be broadly classified into two eras — Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s socialist era from 1950 to 1991 and Dr Manmohan Singh’s liberal economic regime from 1991 onwards. The economic policies before 1991 were largely influenced by India’s suspicion of foreign traders, in view of its experience with the British who sailed to Indian shores for trade and entrenched themselves as rulers. The distaste for foreign investment continued even though the Indian economy performed at suboptimal level growing at an yearly average of 3.9 per cent from 1950 to 1990. While India managed to lay the foundation for large basic industries, the lack of competition and a captive market robbed the Indian manufacturers of incentive to produce world-class products. In 1991, following India’s worst financial crisis, Dr Manmohan Singh dismantled the old Fabian socialist thought in India by opening up the Indian economy. Instead of fear for foreign capital, Dr Singh’s Budget speech exuded his confidence in the Indian economy. He argued for allowing direct foreign investment into India for capital, technology, and markets. His words about the arrival of India on the global stage proved to be truly prophetic. Since 1991, India’s economic growth has picked up and helped more than 500 million people to come out of extreme levels of poverty. Manmohan Singh’s reforms, which were continued by his successors, created globally competitive companies in India. His policies laid the path for the robust expansion of the middle class. It also created prosperity in the country, which funded the government’s ambitious welfare programmes like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, subsidised food grains to the poor, midday meals at schools and social security schemes for elderly. In one of his last interviews in 2023, Dr Singh sounded confident about the Indian economy’s ability to navigate through the recent geopolitical and geoeconomic maelstroms, provided the country remains a harmonious society. India must not forget this prescription of Dr Singh ever.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York state government agencies will have to conduct reviews and publish reports that detail how they’re using artificial intelligence software, under a new law signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul. Hochul, a Democrat, signed the bill last week after it was passed by state lawmakers earlier this year. The law requires state agencies to perform assessments of any software that uses algorithms, computational models or AI techniques, and then submit those reviews to the governor and top legislative leaders along with posting them online. It also bars the use of AI in certain situations, such as an automated decision on whether someone receives unemployment benefits or child care assistance, unless the system is being consistently monitored by a human. State workers would also be shielded from having their hours or job duties limited because of AI under the law. State Sen. Kristen Gonzalez, a Democrat who sponsored the bill, called the law an important step in setting up some guardrails in how the emerging technology is used in state government.Stocks dropped Friday led by a decline in mega-cap tech firms. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped above 4.6%. Still, equities ended the holiday-shortened week in the green. US stocks sank on Friday as technology firms led a broad-sweeping decline across each major index. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 1.49% while the S&P 500 lost 1.11%. The Dow Jones shed 333 points to end the day. "I think what you see today is a lack of faith," UBS senior portfolio manager Alan Rechtschaffen told CNBC , citing uncertainty around trade and productivity. A sell-off in government bonds is also weighing on equity appetite, with the 10-year Treasury yield now trading above 4.6%. Bond traders may be adjusting to expectations of higher-for-longer interest rates next year, and are monitoring how the Trump administration responds to rising fiscal deficits. Despite Friday's sharp decline, indexes remained in the green for the holiday week. Investors may still be holding out for stocks to rally into the year-end, as is typical during the last five trading days of the year. While gains have been made during the holiday-shortened week, it could bode ill if the so-called Santa Claus rally fails to manifest. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts is still in the NFL's concussion protocol, forcing the Philadelphia Eagles to play against Dallas without their star quarterback. The Eagles will turn to backup Kenny Pickett on Sunday because Hurts is still dealing with the lingering effects of a concussion suffered against Washington. Hurts was injured early at Washington after his head slammed against the ground on one run and he was hit in the helmet by Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu at the end of another. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said the Eagles would lean on the medical staff on a daily basis to know where Hurts — who passes and ran for a pair of scores in the first meeting against Dallas in November — was in his recovery from the head injury. The 26-year-old Hurts did not practice this week, leaving Pickett — who suffered a rib injury in relief action against the Commanders — in line for his first start as an Eagle. Pickett was 14 of 24 for 143 yards against the Commanders, throwing a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown and an interception. Pickett is from New Jersey and said when he was that he had “great memories” of going to games at Lincoln Financial Field with his dad and grandfather since he was 5. The chance to run out of the home team tunnel — which he could get Sunday if he’s the starting QB — left him absolutely delighted. “It's a big opportunity,” Pickett said this week. “I've been working hard to stay ready. I felt like I was in a good position last game with my preparation. Now, having a week to practice, I'll feel even better going into the stadium.” Pickett, a first-round pick out of Pitt in 2022, went 14-10 as a starter for the Steelers. The Eagles will bump third-stringer Tanner McKee to the backup spot. The Eagles also signed QB Ian Book this week to the practice squad. There has been recent precedent for quarterbacks to play a week after entering the league’s concussion protocol. Jacksonville's Trevor Lawrence sustained a head injury while scrambling up the middle on the team’s final drive in Week 15 loss to Baltimore last season. Lawrence misfired on seven of his final eight passes after the hit, a stretch that raised concerns on the sideline about his health. Lawrence reported symptoms after the game. He entered the protocol but was cleared in time to start the next game at Tampa Bay. The Eagles (12-3) could decide to play it safe and rest Hurts with the team needing a win against Dallas or the New York Giants to clinch the NFC East and the No. 2 seed in the NFC. Hurts shook off a sluggish start over the first four games and has thrown 18 touchdowns against just five interceptions to turn the Eagles into Super Bowl contenders. Thanks in large part to the tush push, Hurts has 14 rushing touchdowns this season. The Eagles won the Super Bowl for the 2017 season behind backup QB Nick Foles when starter Carson Wentz went down with a late-season injury. AP NFL:Ole Miss ' playoff hopes have likely ended, but it's rivalry week, and facing Mississippi State is -- and always will be -- the biggest game of the season in the Magnolia State. A promising season has soured for the Rebels (8-3, 4-3 SEC) following a 24-17 loss at Florida . Now outside the 12-team playoff hunt, the Rebels can still claim a 10-win season for the third time in four years. Meanwhile, Mississippi State (2-9, 0-7) is limping to the end of a terrible debut season under first-year head coach Jeff Lebby. The Bulldogs are in danger of losing a 10th game for the first time since 2003 (Jackie Sherrill's final season) and going winless in the SEC for the first time since 2002. Saturday is also a reunion for the coaches. Lebby served as Lane Kiffn's offensive coordinator at Ole Miss in 2020 and 2021, and helped lead the program to the Sugar Bowl three years ago. The two respect each other, though Kiffin hasn't been afraid to poke fun at the Mississippi State head coach on social media. Ole Miss has won three of the last four in the Egg Bowl, but only one win was by double digits. Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss: Need to know It's a bad matchup for MSU's offensive line : Mississippi State figures to be in a load of trouble in the trenches against Ole Miss. The Rebels lead the nation with 4.5 sacks per game, including 25 in the last four games. Princely Umanmielen and Suntarine Perkins co-lead the team with 10.5 sacks. The Bulldogs' offensive line has been porous allowing 3.2 sacks per game, ranking 122nd nationally in the 134-team FBS. "I don't think there is a question about it: it's the most talented roster we've played all season long," Lebby said of Ole Miss. "It's on the tape; you know what it is from a personnel standpoint." Ole Miss' losses are kinda weird : How does Ole Miss have three losses on the schedule despite owning the nation's No. 2 offense and a top-5 scoring defense? It bucks the metric and makes this season all the more frustrating for the Rebels, who were built to win a championship and are likely set to fall short of a 12-team playoff. It's been a weird season, and weird things tend to happen in the Egg Bowl. How does Jaxson Dart respond? Jaxson Dart threw two costly interceptions near the end of the game -- including the game-sealing pick -- to hand Florida the win last week. He apologized to his teammates, coaches, and fans after the game in a scene reminiscent of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow's "promise" speech after losing to Ole Miss in 2008. Dart spent time at Kiffin's house Saturday night in Oxford, discussing the game and how to move forward. "He took it really hard," Kiffin said. Dart has been exceptional most of the season -- Kiffin said receivers dropped passes that would have resulted in 100 more yards against Florida -- and is the winningest quarterback in Ole Miss history. He can become the school's all-time leading passer Saturday with 49 yards, surpassing Eli Manning's record of 10,119. Bulldogs don't do anything particularly well : Jeff Lebby promised the Bulldogs would score loads of points with his cutting-edge offense, but that hasn't happened. He wasn't expecting his hand-picked quarterback from the transfer portal ( Blake Shapen ) to be lost for the season due to injury, but averaging only 26.9 points per game (78th) is a non-starter for an offense designed to put defenses in terrible spots. Just last week, Missouri held the ball for more than 40 minutes. The defense is a disaster, too, ranking 127th in total defense (461.8 ypg) and 121st in points allowed (34.8). Unsurprisingly, MSU is 130th in time of possession. How to watch Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss live Date : Friday, Nov. 29 | Time : 3:30 p.m. ET Location : Vaught-Hemingway Stadium – Oxford, Mississippi TV: ABC | Live stream: fubo (Try for free) Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss prediction, picks One could argue that Ole Miss will come out on fire, motivated by its loss to Florida and looking to take out its frustrations with rival Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl. I understand the sentiment, but weird stuff happens in this rivalry, and I suspect the Rebels' disappointment in missing the playoff will lead to a flatter-than-expected performance. That's not to say the Bulldogs will win or make it close, but Mississippi State's performances in previous road games at Texas , Georgia and Tennessee (all covers) provide enough evidence to believe Jeff Lebby will keep this within the betting line. The 30-year-old social media influencer shared her engagement joy with fans on Instagram , posting an intimate video of the sweet proposal by her now-fiancé, James Bridgwood. Surrounded by a romantic setting of rose petals and champagne at home, with their daughter Angelina Grace blissfully playing in the background, the couple celebrated their love. Sophia reminisced about dating Liam from 2013 to October 2015 – known for being asked out 20 times before she said yes – and has since remained close to his circle despite his tragic passing at age 31 this past October. Posting the engagement video set to the tunes of Dan Berk's acoustic cover "Anyone," Sophia captured the moment with a caption that read, "Yes a million times over. 25.12.24," complete with a red heart emoji. Kate Cassidy shares emotional message on grief during the holidays after Liam Payne's death Cheryl and Bear's first Christmas without Liam Payne as she 'goes to great lengths' to make it special Overwhelmed with emotions as she admired her new ring, while their daughter Angelina was more interested in dolls, the post quickly filled with congratulations messages from pals like Lottie Tomlinson, who responded with crying emojis and pink hearts, and Lou Teasdale, who commented an affectionate, "Aw Soph," accompanied by a red heart. Reality TV personality Maura Higgins also chimed in with: "Congratulations." One fan exclaimed: "Omggggggggg. Congratulations! ! ! ! ! ! ! " Another shared their delight, commenting, "Favourites forever can't stop watching this video," Meanwhile, a third chimed in with enthusiasm, writing: "Yayyyyy! So happy for you both! Congratulations.", reports the Mirror . Throughout their time together, Sophia was a familiar presence by Liam's side and was seen attending One Direction's final concert tour dates with him. After they parted ways nearly a decade ago, Liam expressed his profound sadness to The Sun on Sunday, stating: "In order to do right by somebody, sometimes it's better not to do what your heart wants, but to do what's better for them." It had come to light that the once inseparable pair had even contemplated tying the knot prior to their breakup. He opened up to Attitude Magazine, revealing: "We have talked about marriage, but 22 seems a bit young for us. Sophia needs to go off and do what she wants to do. I don't want her to be one of those stay-at-home girlfriends who doesn't really do much." Sophia's announcement of joy arrives nearly three months following the devastating news of Liam's untimely passing. The beloved former member of One Direction tragically lost his life at the young age of 31, after a fall from the third floor of a hotel. An autopsy concluded that Liam died instantaneously from the fall, which inflicted "multiple traumatic injuries" that led to "internal and external haemorrhage."

Key Takeaways Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming regulated industries like healthcare, finance and legal services, but navigating these changes requires a careful balance between innovation and compliance . In healthcare, for example, AI-powered diagnostic tools are enhancing outcomes by improving breast cancer detection rates by 9.4% compared to human radiologists, as highlighted in a study published in JAMA . Meanwhile, financial institutions such as the Commonwealth Bank of Australia are using AI to reduce scam-related losses by 50%, demonstrating the financial impact of AI . Even in the traditionally conservative legal field, AI is revolutionizing document review and case prediction, enabling legal teams to work faster and more efficiently, according to a Thomson Reuters report . However, introducing AI into regulated sectors comes with significant challenges. For product managers leading AI development, the stakes are high: Success requires a strategic focus on compliance, risk management and ethical innovation. Related: Balancing AI Innovation with Ethical Oversight Why compliance is non-negotiable Regulated industries operate within stringent legal frameworks designed to protect consumer data, ensure fairness and promote transparency. Whether dealing with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in healthcare, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe or the oversight of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in finance, companies must integrate compliance into their product development processes. This is especially true for AI systems. Regulations like HIPAA and GDPR not only restrict how data can be collected and used but also require explainability — meaning AI systems must be transparent and their decision-making processes understandable. These requirements are particularly challenging in industries where AI models rely on complex algorithms. Updates to HIPAA, including provisions addressing AI in healthcare, now set specific compliance deadlines, such as the one scheduled for December 23, 2024. International regulations add another layer of complexity. The European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act, effective August 2024, classifies AI applications by risk levels, imposing stricter requirements on high-risk systems like those used in critical infrastructure, finance and healthcare. Product managers must adopt a global perspective, ensuring compliance with local laws while anticipating changes in international regulatory landscapes. The ethical dilemma: Transparency and bias For AI to thrive in regulated sectors, ethical concerns must also be addressed. AI models, particularly those trained on large datasets, are vulnerable to bias. As the American Bar Association notes, unchecked bias can lead to discriminatory outcomes, such as denying loans to specific demographics or misdiagnosing patients based on flawed data patterns. Another critical issue is explainability. AI systems often function as "black boxes," producing results that are difficult to interpret. While this may suffice in less regulated industries, it's unacceptable in sectors like healthcare and finance, where understanding how decisions are made is critical. Transparency isn't just an ethical consideration — it's also a regulatory mandate. Failure to address these issues can result in severe consequences. Under GDPR, for example, non-compliance can lead to fines of up to €20 million or 4% of global annual revenue. Companies like Apple have already faced scrutiny for algorithmic bias. A Bloomberg investigation revealed that the Apple Card's credit decision-making process unfairly disadvantaged women, leading to public backlash and regulatory investigations. Related: AI Isn't Evil — But Entrepreneurs Need to Keep Ethics in Mind As They Implement It How product managers can lead the charge In this complex environment, product managers are uniquely positioned to ensure AI systems are not only innovative but also compliant and ethical . Here's how they can achieve this: 1. Make compliance a priority from day one Engage legal, compliance and risk management teams early in the product lifecycle. Collaborating with regulatory experts ensures that AI development aligns with local and international laws from the outset. Product managers can also work with organizations like the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to adopt frameworks that prioritize compliance without stifling innovation. 2. Design for transparency Building explainability into AI systems should be non-negotiable. Techniques such as simplified algorithmic design, model-agnostic explanations and user-friendly reporting tools can make AI outputs more interpretable. In sectors like healthcare, these features can directly improve trust and adoption rates. 3. Anticipate and mitigate risks Use risk management tools to proactively identify vulnerabilities, whether they stem from biased training data, inadequate testing or compliance gaps. Regular audits and ongoing performance reviews can help detect issues early, minimizing the risk of regulatory penalties. 4. Foster cross-functional collaboration AI development in regulated industries demands input from diverse stakeholders. Cross-functional teams, including engineers, legal advisors and ethical oversight committees, can provide the expertise needed to address challenges comprehensively. 5. Stay ahead of regulatory trends As global regulations evolve, product managers must stay informed. Subscribing to updates from regulatory bodies, attending industry conferences and fostering relationships with policymakers can help teams anticipate changes and prepare accordingly. Lessons from the field Success stories and cautionary tales alike underscore the importance of integrating compliance into AI development. At JPMorgan Chase, the deployment of its AI-powered Contract Intelligence (COIN) platform highlights how compliance-first strategies can deliver significant results. By involving legal teams at every stage and building explainable AI systems, the company improved operational efficiency without sacrificing compliance, as detailed in a Business Insider report . In contrast, the Apple Card controversy demonstrates the risks of neglecting ethical considerations. The backlash against its gender-biased algorithms not only damaged Apple's reputation but also attracted regulatory scrutiny, as reported by Bloomberg. These cases illustrate the dual role of product managers — driving innovation while safeguarding compliance and trust. Related: Avoid AI Disasters and Earn Trust — 8 Strategies for Ethical and Responsible AI The road ahead As the regulatory landscape for AI continues to evolve, product managers must be prepared to adapt. Recent legislative developments, like the EU AI Act and updates to HIPAA, highlight the growing complexity of compliance requirements. Discovery of ancient walls offers insights into China’s earliest dynastyKansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany are expecting the arrival of their new addition soon -- as in, very soon. The couple has two children: daughter Sterling and son Bronze. A baby girl will be arriving soon, and the three-time Super Bowl champion said he wants to be in attendance. "Any day now," Mahomes, 29, told Netflix studio host Kay Adams of Brittany's due date. "Brittany says I've been stressing her out too much this season, so I gotta try to not put that much stress on her through these football games and get that bye. And hopefully God works the right way and we can have that baby maybe on the bye week somewhere and then everything will work out perfectly." "(She's the) MVP because she'll go in there and crush it and what, three babies? I can take a break for a long time and just focus on playing football and raising those babies." On Wednesday, Mahomes and the Chiefs (14-1) were visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-5) in what will be the third game in 11 days for both teams. If Kansas City wins, it clinches the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs -- and Mahomes may have a break in his schedule as a result. The Chiefs conclude the regular season against the host the Denver Broncos in Week 18. --Field Level Media
