Both Trudeau and former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, who Trudeau has been courting to become Canada's next finance minister, shared posts on X Thursday, a day after Trump's latest jab at Canada in his Christmas Day message. It isn't clear if Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who has repeatedly insisted Trump's 51st state references are a joke, will raise the issue with Trump's team when he and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly meet with them in Palm Beach. The two are there to discuss Canada's new $1.3 billion border plan with just under four weeks left before Trump is sworn in again as president. He has threatened to impose a new 25 per cent import tariff on Canada and Mexico the same day over concerns about a trade imbalance, as well as illegal drugs and migration issues at the borders. The broad strokes of Canada's plan were made public Dec. 17, including a new aerial intelligence task force to provide round-the-clock surveillance of the border, and improved efforts using technology and canine teams to seek out drugs in shipments leaving Canada LeBlanc's spokesman, Jean-Sébastien Comeau, said the ministers will also emphasize the negative impacts of Trump's threatened tariffs on both Canada and the U.S. Comeau said the ministers will build on the discussions that took place last month when Trudeau and LeBlanc met Trump at Mar-a-Lago just days after Trump first made his tariff threat. It was at that dinner on Nov. 29 when Trump first raised the notion of Canada becoming the 51st state, a comment LeBlanc has repeatedly since insisted was just a joke. But Trump has continued the quip repeatedly in various social media posts, including in his Christmas Day message when he said Canadians would pay lower taxes and have better military protection if they became Americans. He has taken to calling Trudeau "governor" instead of prime minister. Trudeau had not directly responded to any of the jabs, but on Thursday posted a link to a six-minute long video on YouTube from 2010 in which American journalist Tom Brokaw "explains Canada to Americans." The video, which originally aired during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, explains similarities between the two countries, including their founding based on immigration, their trading relationship and the actions of the Canadian Army in World War 2 and other modern conflicts. "In the long history of sovereign neighbours there has never been a relationship as close, productive and peaceful as the U.S. and Canada," Brokaw says in the video. Trudeau did not expand about why he posted a link to the video, posting it only with the words "some information about Canada for Americans." Carney, who is at the centre of some of Trudeau's recent domestic political troubles, also called out Trump's antics on X Thursday, calling it "casual disrespect" and "carrying the 'joke' too far." "Time to call it out, stand up for Canada, and build a true North American partnership," said Carney, who Trudeau was courting to join his cabinet before Chrystia Freeland resigned as finance minister last week. Freeland's sudden departure, three days after Trudeau informed her he would be firing her as finance minister in favour of Carney, left Trudeau's leadership even more bruised than it already was. Despite the expectation Carney would assume the role, he did not and has not made any statements about it. LeBlanc was sworn in as finance minister instead the same day Freeland quit. More than two dozen Liberal MPs have publicly called on Trudeau to resign as leader, and Trudeau is said to be taking the holidays to think about his next steps. Helene, who worked with Liam and One Direction as a vocal coach, posted an emotional tribute on Instagram, explaining how after spending a week in London she'd been left feeling full of "love and sadness". In addition to this, she thanked Liam's parents, Karen and Geoff Payne, and his sisters, Nicola and Ruth Payne, and promised to continue sharing stories about Liam. Alongside photos from her trip to the UK, as well as some snaps with Liam, Helene wrote: "As my week in London comes to an end I am filled with love and sadness. Thank you Karen, Geoff, Ruth and Nicola - I will as promised continue to tell Liam's story and share my memories." The FCA announced in January that it would investigate allegations of "widespread misconduct" related to discretionary commission agreements (DCAs) on car loans. When you buy a car on finance, you are effectively loaned the value of the car while you pay it off. These loans have interest payments charged on top of them and are often organised on behalf of lenders by brokers - usually the finance arm of a dealership . These brokers earn money in the form of commission - a percentage of the interest payments on the loan. DCAs allowed brokers to, to a certain extent, increase the interest rate on a loan, which in turn increased the amount of commission they received. The practice was banned by the FCA in 2021. Who is eligible for compensation? The FCA estimates that around 40% of car deals may have been affected before 2021. There are two criteria you must meet to have a chance at receiving compensation. First, you must be complaining in relation to a finance deal on a motor vehicle (including cars, vans, motorbikes and motorhomes) that was agreed before January 28 2021. Second, you must have bought the vehicle through a mechanism like Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) or Hire Purchase (HP), which make up the majority of finance deals and mean you own the vehicle at the end of the agreement. More than nine tonnes of fireworks will be set off in Sydney’s iconic New Year’s Eve display on Tuesday night, with an insider revealing the best spots to watch the spectacular showing. The display could become the city’s biggest ever, with 80 firing positions added tot he western side of the Harbour Bridge. Foti International Fireworks has spent more than 4,500 hours preparing the show, which will include eight water-based fireworks platforms with 1,000 fireworks to fire from the Sydney Opera House sails, 30,000 fireworks from the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and thousands of aerial shells with custom designs including birds, fish and emu tracks. Foti International Fireworks director Fortunato Foti said the 9pm Calling Country display — set to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talent — would be synched to a soundtrack, with about 150 pyrotechnics set off on four large drones as part of the 9pm and midnight fireworks. “So there’s a bit happening,” Mr Foti said. WHERE TO WATCH THE FIREWORKS He assured Sydneysiders they’d be able to catch a glimpse of the show “if you’re anywhere you can see the Harbour or the tops of the city skyline”. “Obviously anywhere down from the Harbour — Hunters Hill, Gladesville, down that way all the way to Shark Island, you’ll be able to see fireworks,” he said. “Being up in the sky, obviously front or back of the line, you’ll still get a good view. “It’s about enjoyment, I just hope everyone has a good time.” Sydney Park is known to have a good view of the fireworks, with many flocking to the top of the hill with picnic rugs to catch last year’s display. Bicentennial Park in Rozelle Bay also reportedly boasts a nice view, as does Cockatoo Island, according to Secret Sydney. The City of Sydney has put together a list of 50 vantage points across the city opening from as early as 7am, with people expected to queue early in an attempt to secure a good spot. The Sydney Opera House vantage point opens the earliest at 7am, with no tickets required and alcohol available for purchase. Birchgrove Park, Elkington Park, Illoura Reserve, Lookes Avenue Reserve, Mort Bay Park and Yurulbin Park all open at 8am and allow BYO alcohol, with no tickets required. Blues Point, Campbells Cove, Darling Harbour, Dawes Point (Tar-Ra) Park, East Circular Quay, Hickson Rd Reserve, Lavender Bay Parklands, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney: Bennelong Lawn and West Circular Quay all open at 9am with no tickets required but differing rules around alcohol. Bradfield Park and Mary Booth Reserve open from 9.30am along with Royal Botanic Garden Sydney: Tarpeian Lawn, while Simmons Point and Royal Botanic Garden Sydney: Fleet Steps and Mrs Macquaries Point all open from 10am. From midday, Barangaroo Reserve, Duff Reserve, McKell Park, Observatory Hill Park and Pyrmont Bay Park open, while The Rocks is set to open at 1pm and Pirrama Park at 2pm. Bradley’s Head: Amphitheatre, Athol Lawn and Mast Precinct all open at 3pm, however tickets have sold out. Mr Foti earlier said this year’s display would be “one of the most innovative New Year’s Eve displays in the world”. “Not only do we have more fireworks than ever before, we’re extremely excited to introduce the aerial platforms concept – the first time this has been done in Australian fireworks history,” Mr Foti said. “The introduction of 80 new positions on the bridge and an additional firing location on the western side has enabled us to extend the footprint of the display and offer people a better view of the fireworks. “No matter where you are around the harbour, you’re in for a great show!” Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the Foti family worked “magic” to put on an event that “continues to be bigger, brighter and more innovative and entertaining” each year. “It’s no wonder our New Year’s Eve display is regarded as one of the largest and most technologically advanced fireworks shows on earth,” Ms Moore said.

SEOUL - Investigators probing South Korea's Yoon Suk Yeol over his short-lived declaration of martial law said on Monday they had sought an arrest warrant for the suspended president after he failed to report for questioning. Yoon briefly suspended civilian rule this month, plunging South Korea into its worst political crisis in decades. He was stripped of his presidential duties by parliament over the action, but a constitutional court ruling is pending on whether to confirm the impeachment. The conservative leader also faces criminal charges of insurrection, which could result in life imprisonment or even the death penalty. A former prosecutor himself, Yoon had been summoned three times by investigators for questioning, but refused to present himself each time -- including by yesterday's deadline. "The Joint Investigation Headquarters filed an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol with the Seoul Western District Court", said the probe team in a statement. The application by investigators marks the first attempt in the country's history to forcibly detain a president before the impeachment procedure is complete. Yoon is being investigated by prosecutors as well as a joint team comprising police, defence ministry, and anti-corruption officials. A 10-page prosecutors' report seen by AFP stated that Yoon authorised the military to fire weapons if needed to enter parliament during his failed martial law bid. Yoon's lawyer Yoon Kab-keun had dismissed the prosecutors' report, telling AFP it was "a one-sided account that neither corresponds to objective circumstances nor common sense". - 'Drag them out' - Yoon declared martial law in an unannounced televised address on December 3, saying it was aimed at eliminating "anti-state elements". Lawmakers rushed to parliament within minutes of the declaration to vote it down. At the same time, heavily armed troops stormed the building, scaling fences, smashing windows and landing by helicopter. According to the prosecution indictment report, Yoon told the chief of the capital defence command, Lee Jin-woo, that military forces could shoot if necessary to enter the National Assembly. "Have you still not got in? What are you doing? Break down the door and drag them out, even if it means shooting," Yoon told Lee, according to the report. Yoon also allegedly told the head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command, General Kwak Jong-keun, to "quickly get inside" the National Assembly since the quorum for lifting the martial law declaration had not been met. "So quickly get inside the National Assembly and bring out the people inside the chamber, and break down the doors with an axe if necessary and drag everyone out," the report quotes Yoon as saying at the time. The report also said there was evidence that Yoon had been discussing declaring martial law with senior military officials as early as March. As investigations began against Yoon, attempts by prosecutors to search his offices were blocked by the presidential security team. South Korea's political turmoil deepened late last week when Yoon's replacement, Han Duck-soo, was also impeached by parliament for failing to sign through bills for investigations into Yoon. Born in Los Angeles in 1941 to a filmmaker father, Shyer's big breakthrough came with co-writing “Private Benjamin” for which he and Nancy Meyers received an Oscar nomination. He and Nancy Meyers were frequent collaborators through their nearly 20-year marriage, including on the remake of “The Parent Trap," starring Lindsay Lohan. Dolan, who founded some of the most prominent U.S. media companies including Home Box Office Inc. and Cablevision Systems Corp., has died at age 98. Newsday reports that a statement issued Saturday by his family says Dolan died of natural causes. Dolan’s legacy in cable broadcasting includes founding HBO in 1972, Cablevision in 1973 and the American Movie Classics television station in 1984. He also launched News 12 in New York City, the first U.S. 24-hour cable channel for local news. Dolan also held controlling stakes in companies that owned Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall and the New York Knicks and New York Rangers sports franchises. The star guard’s business manager tells multiple media outlets there was a break-in at Doncic’s home Friday night. Lara Beth Seager says nobody was home, and Doncic filed a police report. The Dallas Morning News reports that jewelry valued at about $30,000 was stolen. Doncic is the sixth known pro athlete in the U.S. whose home was burglarized since October. Andre Drummond latest 76er to hit the injury listA court in Maharashtra's Beed district on Friday (December 27, 2024) extended till January 6 the police custody of NCP's former tehsil chief Vishnu Chate in connection with the kidnap and murder of village head Santosh Deshmukh . Chate is the fourth accused to be arrested in the murder case. He was produced before a court in Kej tehsil of Beed district after his police custody ended on Friday. Those arrested earlier are Jairam Chate, Mahesh Kedar and Pratik Ghule. Police are on the lookout for three others who have been named as wanted accused for kidnapping Santosh Deshmukh, sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, and brutally killing him on December 9. Among those wanted in connection with a related extortion case is Beed-resident Walmik Karad, reportedly a close associate of NCP minister and Parli MLA Dhananjay Munde. Karad's wife has been questioned as part of efforts to nab him, the official said. A CID team probing the murder case took custody of Vishnu Chate and interrogated him on Friday, the official said. Vishnu Chate was held December 18 by the crime branch from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in the extortion case. He allegedly demanded Rs 2 crore from an energy company that had installed a windmill in the district and threatened to stop their operations if their demands were not met, police said. Deshmukh had tried to intervene and stop the extortion, leading to his abduction, torture and murder on December 9, following which an FIR was registered against seven persons, including Vishnu Chate. The extortion case against Vishnu Chate, Walmik Karad and another person was registered on the complaint of the energy firm, police said. Following Deshmukh's murder, there were protests across Beed, especially after photographs of his body with injury marks were shared widely on social media. While Deshmukh belongs to the Maratha community, Vishnu Chate, considered one of the masterminds, and two other accused are from the Vanjari community, part of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs). This has given the horrific murder a caste angle, especially against the backdrop of the Maratha quota agitation and opposition by OBCs to it. A superb solo effort from Millennium High junior Leo Kristo was enough for the Falcons to take a hard-earned 1-0 road victory back to Tracy Tuesday night. Kristo was at the heart of everything dangerous for the Falcons’ offense against the Mustangs and he was finally able to break the deadlock just three minutes into the second half. Kristo went on a mazy run down the left sideline, beating two Mountain House defenders before entering the box and arrowing a nice shot into the bottom left corner to give his side the lead. With something to protect, the Falcons kept their discipline defensively and did not allow their hosts to create any clear-cut opportunities. The Falcons improved to 1-1 in the win after falling at the hands of Tracy High (1-0) 3-0 in their season opener last Friday. For the Mustangs, the defeat was their fourth straight after they took down Kimball 4-1 in their campaign curtain-raiser last Wednesday. Mountain House has been held scoreless in each of their four losses — raising some concern for head coach Luis Montanez. However, the hosts started brightly. They created plenty of chances in the early stages — largely through the speed of senior Jayden Lownes on their right wing. Lownes was extremely unlucky in the opening frame as he had five glorious opportunities to give his side the lead before the break. A couple of those were saved well by Millennium’s sophomore goalie Emiliano Valdez Hernandez. The others called the busy Falcons’ defense into action. Lownes’ best chance of the night came 22 minutes into the first half when he latched onto a crisp through ball from senior Priyansh Nath before rounding the keeper and seeing his open goal effort cleared off the goal line by the Falcons’ Rameen Sattar. Lownes also had another attempt blocked on its way past Valdez Hernandez by the Falcons’ Bryce Perry. After getting away with it on a couple of occasions, the Falcons grew into the game in the latter stages of the first half and should have taken the lead five minutes before the break if not for the woodwork. Kristo was menacing again on the left side and he was brought down inside the Mustangs’ area after winning a foot race to earn his team a penalty kick. His brother, Dario Kristo, stepped up to take and rattled the post to keep the game at 0-0 at the half. Spurred on by head coach Darlha Canas’ team talk, the Falcons came out of the interval with newfound energy and edged in front 180 seconds later. The visitors had an opportunity to ice the game in the 70th minute when a nice corner delivery from senior Landon Vatran found the foot of Leo Kristo on the goalmouth but his shot went just wide of the post. The Mustangs had a last ditch attempt at an equalizer in the last second after being awarded a free kick 25 yards out. Junior Rhys Dominguez claimed it but hit the wall with the ensuing shot, prompting the full time whistle. The Falcons will be back in action on Dec. 4 when they take a short trip to Kimball (0-2). The Mustangs will be at Grace Davis on Dec. 2. Elsewhere, the West High Wolf Pack have started their season 1-1. They beat Franklin 1-0 in their opener last Wednesday courtesy of a goal from junior Gavin Atwal. The Pack lost to Patterson 2-1 Monday night. Senior Alvin Gaitan was the lone scorer.
