Both Trudeau and former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, who Trudeau has been courting to become Canada's next finance minister, shared posts on X Thursday, a day after Trump's latest jab at Canada in his Christmas Day message. It isn't clear if Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who has repeatedly insisted Trump's 51st state references are a joke, will raise the issue with Trump's team when he and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly meet with them in Palm Beach. The two are there to discuss Canada's new $1.3 billion border plan with just under four weeks left before Trump is sworn in again as president. He has threatened to impose a new 25 per cent import tariff on Canada and Mexico the same day over concerns about a trade imbalance, as well as illegal drugs and migration issues at the borders. The broad strokes of Canada's plan were made public Dec. 17, including a new aerial intelligence task force to provide round-the-clock surveillance of the border, and improved efforts using technology and canine teams to seek out drugs in shipments leaving Canada LeBlanc's spokesman, Jean-Sébastien Comeau, said the ministers will also emphasize the negative impacts of Trump's threatened tariffs on both Canada and the U.S. Comeau said the ministers will build on the discussions that took place last month when Trudeau and LeBlanc met Trump at Mar-a-Lago just days after Trump first made his tariff threat. It was at that dinner on Nov. 29 when Trump first raised the notion of Canada becoming the 51st state, a comment LeBlanc has repeatedly since insisted was just a joke. But Trump has continued the quip repeatedly in various social media posts, including in his Christmas Day message when he said Canadians would pay lower taxes and have better military protection if they became Americans. He has taken to calling Trudeau "governor" instead of prime minister. Trudeau had not directly responded to any of the jabs, but on Thursday posted a link to a six-minute long video on YouTube from 2010 in which American journalist Tom Brokaw "explains Canada to Americans." The video, which originally aired during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, explains similarities between the two countries, including their founding based on immigration, their trading relationship and the actions of the Canadian Army in World War 2 and other modern conflicts. "In the long history of sovereign neighbours there has never been a relationship as close, productive and peaceful as the U.S. and Canada," Brokaw says in the video. Trudeau did not expand about why he posted a link to the video, posting it only with the words "some information about Canada for Americans." Carney, who is at the centre of some of Trudeau's recent domestic political troubles, also called out Trump's antics on X Thursday, calling it "casual disrespect" and "carrying the 'joke' too far." "Time to call it out, stand up for Canada, and build a true North American partnership," said Carney, who Trudeau was courting to join his cabinet before Chrystia Freeland resigned as finance minister last week. Freeland's sudden departure, three days after Trudeau informed her he would be firing her as finance minister in favour of Carney, left Trudeau's leadership even more bruised than it already was. Despite the expectation Carney would assume the role, he did not and has not made any statements about it. LeBlanc was sworn in as finance minister instead the same day Freeland quit. More than two dozen Liberal MPs have publicly called on Trudeau to resign as leader, and Trudeau is said to be taking the holidays to think about his next steps. He is currently vacationing in British Columbia. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 27, 2024. Alessia Passafiume, The Canadian Press See a typo/mistake? Have a story/tip? AUDI has unveiled its new logo with major changes a mere few days after Jaguar was slammed over the "woke" EV rebrand. The car brand has divided drivers through its launch of a new sub-brand which gets rid of the iconic four rings logo. Meanwhile a 'new' classic Jaguar has been unveiled with a roaring petrol engine - just days after the British firm's controversial re-brand ahead of its electric revolution. A monstrous version of Jag's iconic XJS model has been revealed for the first time, although the marque won't be the ones making it. Indeed, Berkshire-based car maker Tom Walkinshaw Racing, known as TWR, is the brains behind this very cool looking XJS Supercat. Widely considered one of the most famous Jags, some 115,413 XJS models rolled off production lines in that time - and today it's considered a mainstay at classic car shows. "Available to commission" now, the timing of the arrival of TWR's XJS Supercat couldn't have come at a more curious period in Jaguar's 102-year history, as the manufacturer is in the midst of one of motoring history’s most outrageous rebrands. This month, they began the first phase of their transition by putting a stop to all of their current models being sold in dealerships , with only the F-Pace to be carried over into 2025. What is the FCA investigating and who is eligible for compensation? By Jacob Jaffa, Motors Reporter What is being investigated? The FCA announced in January that it would investigate allegations of "widespread misconduct" related to discretionary commission agreements (DCAs) on car loans. When you buy a car on finance, you are effectively loaned the value of the car while you pay it off. These loans have interest payments charged on top of them and are often organised on behalf of lenders by brokers - usually the finance arm of a dealership . These brokers earn money in the form of commission - a percentage of the interest payments on the loan. DCAs allowed brokers to, to a certain extent, increase the interest rate on a loan, which in turn increased the amount of commission they received. The practice was banned by the FCA in 2021. Who is eligible for compensation? The FCA estimates that around 40% of car deals may have been affected before 2021. There are two criteria you must meet to have a chance at receiving compensation. First, you must be complaining in relation to a finance deal on a motor vehicle (including cars, vans, motorbikes and motorhomes) that was agreed before January 28 2021. Second, you must have bought the vehicle through a mechanism like Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) or Hire Purchase (HP), which make up the majority of finance deals and mean you own the vehicle at the end of the agreement. Drivers who leased a car through something like a Personal Contract Hire, where you give the car back at the end of the lease, are not eligible.LG PRESENTS "LIVE BEYOND" WITH EXPANDED SECOND-GENERATION LG SIGNATURE LINEUP AT CES 2025

More than nine tonnes of fireworks will be set off in Sydney’s iconic New Year’s Eve display on Tuesday night, with an insider revealing the best spots to watch the spectacular showing. The display could become the city’s biggest ever, with 80 firing positions added tot he western side of the Harbour Bridge. Foti International Fireworks has spent more than 4,500 hours preparing the show, which will include eight water-based fireworks platforms with 1,000 fireworks to fire from the Sydney Opera House sails, 30,000 fireworks from the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and thousands of aerial shells with custom designs including birds, fish and emu tracks. Foti International Fireworks director Fortunato Foti said the 9pm Calling Country display — set to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talent — would be synched to a soundtrack, with about 150 pyrotechnics set off on four large drones as part of the 9pm and midnight fireworks. “So there’s a bit happening,” Mr Foti said. WHERE TO WATCH THE FIREWORKS He assured Sydneysiders they’d be able to catch a glimpse of the show “if you’re anywhere you can see the Harbour or the tops of the city skyline”. “Obviously anywhere down from the Harbour — Hunters Hill, Gladesville, down that way all the way to Shark Island, you’ll be able to see fireworks,” he said. “Being up in the sky, obviously front or back of the line, you’ll still get a good view. “It’s about enjoyment, I just hope everyone has a good time.” Sydney Park is known to have a good view of the fireworks, with many flocking to the top of the hill with picnic rugs to catch last year’s display. Bicentennial Park in Rozelle Bay also reportedly boasts a nice view, as does Cockatoo Island, according to Secret Sydney. The City of Sydney has put together a list of 50 vantage points across the city opening from as early as 7am, with people expected to queue early in an attempt to secure a good spot. The Sydney Opera House vantage point opens the earliest at 7am, with no tickets required and alcohol available for purchase. Birchgrove Park, Elkington Park, Illoura Reserve, Lookes Avenue Reserve, Mort Bay Park and Yurulbin Park all open at 8am and allow BYO alcohol, with no tickets required. Blues Point, Campbells Cove, Darling Harbour, Dawes Point (Tar-Ra) Park, East Circular Quay, Hickson Rd Reserve, Lavender Bay Parklands, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney: Bennelong Lawn and West Circular Quay all open at 9am with no tickets required but differing rules around alcohol. Bradfield Park and Mary Booth Reserve open from 9.30am along with Royal Botanic Garden Sydney: Tarpeian Lawn, while Simmons Point and Royal Botanic Garden Sydney: Fleet Steps and Mrs Macquaries Point all open from 10am. From midday, Barangaroo Reserve, Duff Reserve, McKell Park, Observatory Hill Park and Pyrmont Bay Park open, while The Rocks is set to open at 1pm and Pirrama Park at 2pm. Bradley’s Head: Amphitheatre, Athol Lawn and Mast Precinct all open at 3pm, however tickets have sold out. Dumaresq Reserve, Murray Rose Pool & Blackburn Gardens, Rose Bay Foreshore and Yarranabe Park also open at 3pm followed by Embarkation Park and Giba Park at 4pm, Manly Cove, North Head, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney: Foundation & Friends NYE Picnic and Strickland Estate at 5pm, and Taronga Zoo at 6pm. Last is Luna Park, which is set to open from 7pm. For those who prefer a quiet night in, the display will be live streamed on the Sydney New Year’s Eve website, as well as broadcast on TV. Mr Foti earlier said this year’s display would be “one of the most innovative New Year’s Eve displays in the world”. “Not only do we have more fireworks than ever before, we’re extremely excited to introduce the aerial platforms concept – the first time this has been done in Australian fireworks history,” Mr Foti said. “The introduction of 80 new positions on the bridge and an additional firing location on the western side has enabled us to extend the footprint of the display and offer people a better view of the fireworks. “No matter where you are around the harbour, you’re in for a great show!” Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the Foti family worked “magic” to put on an event that “continues to be bigger, brighter and more innovative and entertaining” each year. “It’s no wonder our New Year’s Eve display is regarded as one of the largest and most technologically advanced fireworks shows on earth,” Ms Moore said.

SEOUL - Investigators probing South Korea's Yoon Suk Yeol over his short-lived declaration of martial law said on Monday they had sought an arrest warrant for the suspended president after he failed to report for questioning. Yoon briefly suspended civilian rule this month, plunging South Korea into its worst political crisis in decades. He was stripped of his presidential duties by parliament over the action, but a constitutional court ruling is pending on whether to confirm the impeachment. The conservative leader also faces criminal charges of insurrection, which could result in life imprisonment or even the death penalty. A former prosecutor himself, Yoon had been summoned three times by investigators for questioning, but refused to present himself each time -- including by yesterday's deadline. "The Joint Investigation Headquarters filed an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol with the Seoul Western District Court", said the probe team in a statement. The application by investigators marks the first attempt in the country's history to forcibly detain a president before the impeachment procedure is complete. Yoon is being investigated by prosecutors as well as a joint team comprising police, defence ministry, and anti-corruption officials. A 10-page prosecutors' report seen by AFP stated that Yoon authorised the military to fire weapons if needed to enter parliament during his failed martial law bid. Yoon's lawyer Yoon Kab-keun had dismissed the prosecutors' report, telling AFP it was "a one-sided account that neither corresponds to objective circumstances nor common sense". - 'Drag them out' - Yoon declared martial law in an unannounced televised address on December 3, saying it was aimed at eliminating "anti-state elements". Lawmakers rushed to parliament within minutes of the declaration to vote it down. At the same time, heavily armed troops stormed the building, scaling fences, smashing windows and landing by helicopter. According to the prosecution indictment report, Yoon told the chief of the capital defence command, Lee Jin-woo, that military forces could shoot if necessary to enter the National Assembly. "Have you still not got in? What are you doing? Break down the door and drag them out, even if it means shooting," Yoon told Lee, according to the report. Yoon also allegedly told the head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command, General Kwak Jong-keun, to "quickly get inside" the National Assembly since the quorum for lifting the martial law declaration had not been met. "So quickly get inside the National Assembly and bring out the people inside the chamber, and break down the doors with an axe if necessary and drag everyone out," the report quotes Yoon as saying at the time. The report also said there was evidence that Yoon had been discussing declaring martial law with senior military officials as early as March. As investigations began against Yoon, attempts by prosecutors to search his offices were blocked by the presidential security team. South Korea's political turmoil deepened late last week when Yoon's replacement, Han Duck-soo, was also impeached by parliament for failing to sign through bills for investigations into Yoon. The Royal Family attended St Mary Magdalene's Church on the Norfolk estate for the Yuletide service at 11am on Christmas Day. After attending the traditional festive service on the Norfolk estate, the Prince of Wales, 42, stepped into full "dad mode" as he shook hands with crowds offering gifts to the royal children. Among the excited well-wishers was a fan handing over chocolates intended for six-year-old Prince Louis. But William playfully intervened, saying: "No, no, you can't give all the chocolates! Definitely not. "You've got to keep them for yourself as well." A video shared on social media captured the lighthearted moment, showing a visibly excited Prince Louis standing behind his father with his hands already full of presents from the crowd. At one point, Louis moved forward, seemingly eager for more gifts, but he quickly stopped and stood still after William's gentle command. The heartwarming exchange highlighted the Prince's firm yet affectionate parenting style as he managed the flow of chocolates, stuffed animals, and bouquets being handed to his children. Prince William, his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, and their three children - Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis - looked the picture of festive elegance as they greeted the public. The young royals, dressed in coordinated navy blue outfits, carried an assortment of gifts, including a large teddy bear and chocolates. During the walkabout, Prince Louis drew smiles when he accepted a Father Christmas headband from a well-wisher, graciously thanking them before asking his father for help carrying his growing haul. "Papa, can you carry some?" he sweetly asked, prompting laughter from the crowd. The festive outing marked an annual royal tradition, with senior family members, including King Charles and Queen Camilla, also greeting well-wishers after the church service. Hundreds of royal fans gathered outside the gates of Sandringham this morning hoping to catch a glimpse of t he royal family on Christmas. The King, wearing a camel coat and carrying an umbrella, waved to well-wishers and shook hands with the Rev Can Dr Paul Rhys Williams as he led the family into the church. He was followed closely behind by Queen Camilla, wearing an ivy green coat and beret. They were joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales, in a similar green outfit to the Queen, and their children Princes George and Louis, and Princess Charlotte, who waved at the crowds. Outcast Prince Andrew did not join the family amid his Chinese spy scandal . Mike Tindall followed behind the Kensingtons with his daughter Mia. He could be seen sharing a joke with niece Savannah Phillips as they waited to go into the chapel. His wife Zara, in a burgundy coat and matching headband, walked separately with her brother Peter Phillips and his other daughter Isla. By EMILY-JANE HEAP PENSIONER Karen MacLean was given a hug by the Princess of Wales outside Sandringham this morning after revealing she is battling cancer. The 73-year-old, from Humberston near Cleethorpes, Lincs, described the moment Kate embraced her as "overwhelmingly good". She told The Sun: "We were talking about our illnesses, because we're both cancer victims, when she reached out and hugged me. "It was really unexpected and such a joy... I gave her a tight squeeze back. It was such a surreal moment. "I wasn't expecting that at all. It was so overwhelmingly good." She added: "You get a camaraderie with other cancer victims. Unless you've been on that journey you can't understand what it's like." Karen, who is still under treatment for cancer, also spoke briefly to the King, Princess Beatrice and Prince George. She continued: "Kate is looking really well and The King looks quite good too. "They've not had the best of years, so it's nice to see them all back out together and united." She held hands with her youngest daughter Lena. Also in attendance was Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and stepson Christopher Woolf. Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh , in a pale pink coat, walked alongside her daughter Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, in a blue coat and beret. They were joined by Sir Timothy Laurence. Kansas has won consecutive games over Top 25 teams for the first time in school history, knocking off Iowa State before BYU. Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht has thrown a touchdown in a school-record 14 consecutive games, while receivers Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel both have more than 800 yards receiving. San Jose State is the only other FBS team with a pair of 800-yard receivers. Becht has 2,628 yards and 17 touchdowns passing for the Cyclones (8-2, 5-2), who are still in Big 12 contention. Oklahoma State goes into its home finale against Texas Tech with a seven-game losing streak, its longest since a nine-game skid from 1977-78. The only longer winless streak since was an 0-10-1 season in 1991. This is Mike Gundy's 20th season as head coach, and his longest losing streak before now was five in a row in 2005, his first season and the last time the Cowboys didn't make a bowl game. ... Baylor plays at Houston for the first time since 1995, the final Southwest Conference season. The Cougars won last year in the only meeting since to even the series 14-14-1. ... Eight Big 12 teams are bowl eligible. As many as six more teams could reach six wins. The Big 12 already has four 1,000-yard rushers, including three who did it last season. UCF's RJ Harvey is the league's top rusher (1,328 yards) and top scorer with 21 touchdowns (19 rushing/two receiving). The others with consecutive 1,000-yard seasons are Texas Tech career rushing leader Tahj Brooks (1,184 yards) and Kansas State's DJ Giddens (1,128 yards). Cam Skattebo with league newcomer Arizona State has 1,074 yards. Devin Neal, the career rushing leader at his hometown university, is 74 yards shy of being the first Kansas player with three 1,000-yard seasons. Cincinnati's Corey Kiner needs 97 yards to reach 1,000 again. Be the first to know Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Andre Drummond latest 76er to hit the injury listA court in Maharashtra's Beed district on Friday (December 27, 2024) extended till January 6 the police custody of NCP's former tehsil chief Vishnu Chate in connection with the kidnap and murder of village head Santosh Deshmukh . Chate is the fourth accused to be arrested in the murder case. He was produced before a court in Kej tehsil of Beed district after his police custody ended on Friday. Those arrested earlier are Jairam Chate, Mahesh Kedar and Pratik Ghule. Police are on the lookout for three others who have been named as wanted accused for kidnapping Santosh Deshmukh, sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, and brutally killing him on December 9. Among those wanted in connection with a related extortion case is Beed-resident Walmik Karad, reportedly a close associate of NCP minister and Parli MLA Dhananjay Munde. Karad's wife has been questioned as part of efforts to nab him, the official said. A CID team probing the murder case took custody of Vishnu Chate and interrogated him on Friday, the official said. Vishnu Chate was held December 18 by the crime branch from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in the extortion case. He allegedly demanded Rs 2 crore from an energy company that had installed a windmill in the district and threatened to stop their operations if their demands were not met, police said. Deshmukh had tried to intervene and stop the extortion, leading to his abduction, torture and murder on December 9, following which an FIR was registered against seven persons, including Vishnu Chate. The extortion case against Vishnu Chate, Walmik Karad and another person was registered on the complaint of the energy firm, police said. Following Deshmukh's murder, there were protests across Beed, especially after photographs of his body with injury marks were shared widely on social media. While Deshmukh belongs to the Maratha community, Vishnu Chate, considered one of the masterminds, and two other accused are from the Vanjari community, part of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs). This has given the horrific murder a caste angle, especially against the backdrop of the Maratha quota agitation and opposition by OBCs to it. A superb solo effort from Millennium High junior Leo Kristo was enough for the Falcons to take a hard-earned 1-0 road victory back to Tracy Tuesday night. Kristo was at the heart of everything dangerous for the Falcons’ offense against the Mustangs and he was finally able to break the deadlock just three minutes into the second half. Kristo went on a mazy run down the left sideline, beating two Mountain House defenders before entering the box and arrowing a nice shot into the bottom left corner to give his side the lead. With something to protect, the Falcons kept their discipline defensively and did not allow their hosts to create any clear-cut opportunities. The Falcons improved to 1-1 in the win after falling at the hands of Tracy High (1-0) 3-0 in their season opener last Friday. For the Mustangs, the defeat was their fourth straight after they took down Kimball 4-1 in their campaign curtain-raiser last Wednesday. Mountain House has been held scoreless in each of their four losses — raising some concern for head coach Luis Montanez. However, the hosts started brightly. They created plenty of chances in the early stages — largely through the speed of senior Jayden Lownes on their right wing. Lownes was extremely unlucky in the opening frame as he had five glorious opportunities to give his side the lead before the break. A couple of those were saved well by Millennium’s sophomore goalie Emiliano Valdez Hernandez. The others called the busy Falcons’ defense into action. Lownes’ best chance of the night came 22 minutes into the first half when he latched onto a crisp through ball from senior Priyansh Nath before rounding the keeper and seeing his open goal effort cleared off the goal line by the Falcons’ Rameen Sattar. Lownes also had another attempt blocked on its way past Valdez Hernandez by the Falcons’ Bryce Perry. After getting away with it on a couple of occasions, the Falcons grew into the game in the latter stages of the first half and should have taken the lead five minutes before the break if not for the woodwork. Kristo was menacing again on the left side and he was brought down inside the Mustangs’ area after winning a foot race to earn his team a penalty kick. His brother, Dario Kristo, stepped up to take and rattled the post to keep the game at 0-0 at the half. Spurred on by head coach Darlha Canas’ team talk, the Falcons came out of the interval with newfound energy and edged in front 180 seconds later. The visitors had an opportunity to ice the game in the 70th minute when a nice corner delivery from senior Landon Vatran found the foot of Leo Kristo on the goalmouth but his shot went just wide of the post. The Mustangs had a last ditch attempt at an equalizer in the last second after being awarded a free kick 25 yards out. Junior Rhys Dominguez claimed it but hit the wall with the ensuing shot, prompting the full time whistle. The Falcons will be back in action on Dec. 4 when they take a short trip to Kimball (0-2). The Mustangs will be at Grace Davis on Dec. 2. Elsewhere, the West High Wolf Pack have started their season 1-1. They beat Franklin 1-0 in their opener last Wednesday courtesy of a goal from junior Gavin Atwal. The Pack lost to Patterson 2-1 Monday night. Senior Alvin Gaitan was the lone scorer. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States on Monday sent its long-awaited report to President Joe Biden, a longtime opponent of the deal. Some federal agencies represented on the panel were skeptical that allowing a Japanese company to buy an American-owned steelmaker would create national security risks. That's according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter. Both Biden and President-elect Donald Trump opposed the merger and vowed to block it. Nippon Steel says it is confident the deal will go ahead. Honda will initially lead the new management, retaining the principles and brands of each company. Following is a quick look at what a combined Honda and Nissan would mean for the companies, and for the auto industry. An analyst looks ahead to how the US economy might fare under Trump WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump won a return to the White House in part by promising big changes in economic policy — more tax cuts, huge tariffs on imports, mass deportations of immigrants working in the United States illegally. In some ways, his victory marked a repudiation of President Joe Biden’s economic stewardship and a protest against inflation. It came despite low unemployment and steady growth under the Biden administration. What lies ahead for the economy under Trump? NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A lopsided, shutout loss has left the beat-up New Orleans Saints limping into the final two games of a lost season — and into a rather cloudy future beyond that. Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi figured that a visit to playoff-bound Green Bay would be a tall order for his injury-riddled squad, whose prominent missing players included starters at quarterback, running back and receiver. And when New Orleans’ mostly healthy defensive front struggled against a Packers ground game led by running back Josh Jacobs, the rout was on. Nothing “stuck out on film other than a lack of execution and lack of playmaking,” Rizzi said Tuesday after reviewing video of Monday night’s 34-0 loss at Green Bay. “We played against a playoff team, at their place, that has very few holes on their team,” Rizzi added. “It was a little bit of a perfect storm.” Rizzi, a special teams coordinator who has made no secret that he sees his eight-game interim stint as an opportunity to further his head-coaching ambitions, has two more games left in what has been an up-and-down audition. The Saints are 3-3 on his watch, which includes one of New Orleans’ most lopsided losses since the turn of the century. With the playoffs unattainable, and with a lot of reserves pressed into service, the final two weeks will serve primarily as a player-evaluation period heading into the offseason, when there are bound to be myriad changes on the roster and perhaps the coaching staff. Rizzi said the Saints, realistically, have been in evaluation mode “for the last month or so,” but added that there maybe be additional young or practice-squad players getting longer looks in the final two games. “My big thing this week is to see how we can respond,” Rizzi said. “We’re going to find out a lot about a lot of people.” What’s working Of the Saints’ four punts, three were inside the Green Bay 20 and New Orleans did not allow a single punt return yard. The punt team might have been the only unit that executed its job (even the kickoff unit allowed a 38-yard return). What needs help The Saints had trouble protecting the quarterback (three sacks) and protecting the football (two turnovers). They couldn’t run the ball (67 yards). They couldn’t stop the run (188 yards allowed). They couldn’t pass the ball consistently (129 yards) or stop the pass when they needed to. As former Saints coach Jim Mora once said, they couldn’t do “ diddly poo.” Although rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler largely struggled and was responsible for both New Orleans turnovers, he had enough highlights — including a jumping, first-down pass on third-and-long — to keep him penciled in as the starter if the injured Derek Carr remains unable to play, Rizzi said. “It was definitely a performance where we got to take the good with the bad,” Rizzi said. “We’ve got to get rid of those negative plays.” Stock up New Orleans native Foster Moreau has emerged as one of the Saints’ most reliable offensive players. The sixth-year NFL tight end made two catches for a team-high 33 yards on Monday night, giving him 25 catches for 335 yards this season. His four TDs receiving entering the game remain tied for the team lead. Stock down Rizzi was riding high after two wins to start his interim term as head coach, but Monday night’s ugly loss is the club’s third in four games and took a lot of luster off his candidacy for a longer-term appointment. Injury report Center Erik McCoy left the game with an elbow injury, while guard Lucas Patrick hurt his knee in the closing minutes. Rizzi said McCoy won’t need surgery but could miss the rest of the season. The coach said Patrick needs more tests but is not expected to play again this season. While the chances of Carr (non-throwing, left hand) or top running back Alvin Kamara (groin) playing again this season appear slim, the Saints have declined to rule that out. Rizzi said Carr is getting closer to being able to play and wants the opportunity to go against his former team, the Las Vegas Raiders. Meanwhile, Rizzi said Kamara “is working his tail off to try to come back” this season. “Alvin told me this morning, in my office, that he really would like to play again,” Rizzi said. Key number Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. 24 — The number of years since the Saints suffered a more lopsided shutout loss, 38-0 against San Francisco in 2002. Up next The Saints’ home finale against lowly Las Vegas will be an anticlimactic affair bound to generate a level of fan interest similar to, if not less than, a preseason game. But the game will be important to the current regime, which needs victories in each of the club’s final two games to avoid the franchise’s worst record since it was displaced by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and went 3-13. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL Advertisement Advertisement

Two years ago, Argyle came painfully close to a chance at playing for its third state championship in program history. The Eagles went undefeated through their first 14 games of the 2022 season in their first year at the 5A Division II level before a semifinal round matchup with defending state champion Dallas South Oak Cliff. Argyle had its chances in the contest but ultimately took a tough 14-6 defeat to the Golden Bears, which went on to win their second straight title. The No. 4-ranked Eagles (13-1) have earned a shot at turning the tables this fall behind another strong season that has led to a state semifinal rematch with No. 1 South Oak Cliff (12-2). The teams will square off at 7 p.m. Friday at SMU's Gerald J. Ford Stadium for a spot in the 5A DII championship game. Although many of Argyle's players from that 2022 squad have graduated, senior wide receiver Will Krzysiak is one who played in the last game against South Oak Cliff and remains fueled by what could have been. "It's something that I think about all the time," Krzysiak said. "That what if. What if we won? We could've gone to state. So, this is a really big game for us and it's kind of like a revenge tour." Krzysiak has been one of Argyle's key senior leaders during its state semifinal return. The Harvard commit leads the team in receiving this year with 60 catches for 1,014 yards and nine touchdowns. He was also the Eagles' top receiver last season at more than 1,000 yards after finishing as its second-leading receiver back in 2022 as a sophomore. Argyle's Will Krzysiak leads the team in receiving yards and is one of the only remaining players from the 2022 squad that fell to South Oak Cliff in the state semifinals. He's helped lead the way for an Argyle offense that's averaging 41.4 points per game this season and has put up at least 41 points in three of its first four playoff contests. Krzysiak feels the unit's growing chemistry has helped fuel its success. "As the season progresses, your chemistry becomes tighter and stronger," Krzysiak said. "That's really helped us move the ball around and get some points on the board. That's something really special about our team. "Being confident in our guys and what we do, that really allows us to put points on the board." Finding a way to score points against the Golden Bears is certainly no small task. They have allowed 14 or fewer points in each of their first four playoff games, including a dominant 56-14 win last week over defending state champion Port Neches-Groves in a rematch of the 2023 title game. South Oak Cliff's defense gave the Eagles plenty of trouble in the teams' meeting two years ago as well, holding them to six points on two field goals. Needless to say, Argyle hopes to find more success this time around. "I think we can definitely pressure them on both sides of the ball," senior defensive back Xavier Sanchez said. "We had some things we needed to fix from 2022. I think we're getting those fixed." Argyle's Xavier Sanchez, middle, has played a key part defensively this fall in helping the Eagles earn a rematch of their 2022 state semifinal loss to South Oak Cliff. Sanchez is one of the Eagles' top tacklers this season at 86 total stops (59 solo) alongside five pass breakups, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He's a key part of a secondary that aims to slow down South Oak Cliff's stalwart offense. The Golden Bears have averaged 45.4 points over their last 12 games since taking losses against 6A state powers Galena Park North Shore and Duncanville in the first two contests of the season. Their offense hasn't been required to score in bunches in the postseason due to the defense's dominant efforts, though the unit has still put up 35 or more points in all four playoff bouts. Argyle coach Todd Rodgers is plenty familiar with what awaits his team, but he feels a few years of 5A competition have helped better prepare his group for the challenge. Argyle coach Todd Rodgers signals to decline a penalty against Frisco Lone Star earlier this season. "We were very new to 5A and I think we're a little bit further down the road to understanding what 5A football requires," Rodgers said. "So, I think we're coming at it from a little bit different lens. I'm pleased with our football team. We're healthy, for the most part, and we just have to do the things we've been coached to do." As Argyle gets a rematch against South Oak Cliff in the Eagles' third state semifinal trip over the last five years, the team is not taking its special season for granted, or the opportunity at even more. "This is something that's very important to our team," Krzysiak said. "This is one of our goals. Our three goals are winning our district, playing in December and going to the state championship. So, it's something we value highly and it's great to be playing in December." Success! An email has been sent to with a link to confirm list signup. Error! There was an error processing your request. After careful evaluation and market research, selecting VictoriaMetrics’ Enterprise solution was the clear choice. "VictoriaMetrics is an essential part of data management for the Gemini project and is the backbone of IHI Terrasun’s data collection and management system. The platform's ability to handle massive datasets with ease has been invaluable” , explained Larry Kane, SVP of Project and Product Engineering at IHI Terrasun . “We use the data to generate operational insights for maintenance and optimization, which is essential for the health of the project. The VictoriaMetrics team’s resourcefulness and quick response makes them a great partner in this technically challenging endeavor." Stalwartly reliable and cost-effective real-time scalability VictoriaMetrics Enterprise’s advanced architecture and robust features made it the perfect solution for large-scale projects like Gemini for four reasons: “We’re thrilled to see VictoriaMetrics help grow IHI Terrasun's energy storage operations over the past six years. Our commitment to developing an efficient and scalable solution has been central to VictoriaMetrics’ mission, and we could not have achieved this success without IHI Terrasun’s invaluable feedback on our Enterprise product.” Artem Navoiev, Co-Founder of VictoriaMetrics , stated. “In these times where breaking heat records has become a new normal, I'm glad projects like Gemini exist, and VictoriaMetrics can support them. If we can help reduce CO2 emissions, we're making a difference. This is a win-win-win for IHI Terrasun, VictoriaMetrics, the Gemini project and ultimately, for the planet.” A bright future for clean energy As the Gemini project continues to deliver electricity with IHI Terrasun’s stewardship, VictoriaMetrics will remain a vital component of its success. With its commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction, VictoriaMetrics is well-positioned to support IHI Terrasun's energy storage projects and contribute to a more sustainable future. This setback comes as a blow to the team's prospects, as Aguero's presence on the field is always a game-changer. In addition to Aguero, both Kevin De Bruyne and Aymeric Laporte will also be missing in action due to various injuries.Amsterdam-based startup CarbonX has secured €4mn to industrialise a new anode material that could help Europe reduce its reliance on China for graphite, a substance which makes up half the weight of a typical lithium-ion battery. Netherlands-based VC Energy Transition Fund Rotterdam led the round. It’s an extension on CarbonX’s €10mn capital injection announced in February, capping off the funding round at a cosy €14mn. Graphite is the go-to material for lithium-ion battery anodes, which is the negative electrode responsible for storing and releasing electrons during the charging and discharging process . Its found in batteries that power everything from EVs to smartphones. The EU imports almost 100% of its graphite from China, which recently imposed restrictions on exports of the carbon-based material amid rising political tensions between Bejing and the West. The 💜 of EU tech The latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol' founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. It's free, every week, in your inbox. Sign up now! “A resilient battery supply chain is crucial for global electrification,” said CarbonX’s co-founder Rutger van Raalten. “Yet, we don’t see sufficient alternatives for locally sourcing critical raw materials such as graphite.” CarbonX wants to offer European and American battery makers a way to source a graphite alternative that is not just locally-made, but greener and better performing. Spun out from Delft University of Technology in 2014, the company has developed an “emulsion feedstock” technology that takes carbon black — a fine, black powder made mostly of pure carbon — and processes it into a material with a complex 3D porous structure. Similar to graphite, this hexagonal formation creates spaces where lithium ions can insert themselves during charging. However, CarbonX says that its material has even more little crevices for the lithium ions to hide. That equals faster charging and longer-lasting batteries. “CarbonX’s unique 3D porous network structure improves electron and lithium-ion transfer, while it is still highly compressible to achieve high energy densities,” explained Daniela Sordi, CTO and co-founder of CarbonX. CarbonX’s feedstock technology purportedly consumes much less energy compared to synthetic or natural graphite production. This equals lower costs and less carbon emissions, it said. The company’s carbon anode material is currently undergoing “late-stage qualifications” with “several top 10 global battery cell manufacturers.” It expects to secure its first offtake agreements halfway into 2025. Graphite demand is expected to rise by 20-25 times between 2020 to 2040, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). To cater to this “enormous market pull,” CarbonX plans to scale up quickly. CarbonX is currently planning its first high-capacity facility at an existing carbon black factory in the Port of Rotterdam. Its tech can “plug-in” to existing carbon black factories, using their current equipment, so there’s no need to build new plants. The company is also undergoing a feasibility study for a 20,000 ton per annum production line in both Europe and US, it said. “The founders of CarbonX found an answer to the developing Chinese export ban on graphite,” commented Jesse In ‘t Velt, investment manager of Energy Transition Fund Rotterdam.

Square Enix and Platinum Games say that Nier: Automata has sold more than 9 million copies, meaning that the androids-on-robots post-apocalypse is more popular than ever and going strong eight years after it first released. The NieR Series social media accounts announced the milestone by sharing an image celebrating "Over 9 Million Global Shipments & Download Sales" alongside the message "This isn't possible without you." This isn't possible without you ❤️ pic.twitter.com/uXQh3TLNk7 December 27, 2024 It's quite the testament to PlatinumGames' and creative lead Yoko Taro's vision of an action-heavy action RPG with a wildly complex and at times even confusing story. It's a series that's clearly a labor of love, with the producer insisting it'll continue as long as Taro is alive to work on it. And, clearly, there's demand for Nier with the game selling many millions of copies now despite the lack of any sequel in sight. It's buoyed long-term by the enthusiastic community of fans around it and the sheer value of the game: It's one of those that keeps serving up new content and secret endings even as you play dozens more hours and finish it over and over. Nier: Automata clocked a 79% PC Gamer Review back in 2017, held back more than anything by a pretty lackluster PC port. Andi Dorfman is on the mend after suffering postpartum complications following the birth of her first baby . Less than a week after welcoming her and husband Blaine Hart 's daughter Harper Bell Hart , the Bachelorette alum was hospitalized and underwent surgery to remove hematomas, or collections of blood that form outside blood vessels. "Welp, we're back! This time for Mama," Andi wrote on her Instagram Stories Dec. 27. "After getting home, I was in a ton of pain and it was getting worse by the day. Despite the internet saying recovery takes time, I still felt something was wrong and finally after trying every home remedy, called my doctors and they told me to come right in." The 37-year-old continued, "Turns out I had one large and one small hematoma that were the cause of the pain. Within a few hours, we were at the hospital and prepped for surgery. A very straightforward procedure but still pretty terrifying having a 6 day old baby (plus loads of hormones still lurking)." Andi said she felt "some guilt" worrying about herself instead of her daughter after giving birth. "But I realized," the Bachelor Nation star continued, "she's no good if I'm no good." Andi, who announced Harper's birth Dec. 22 and also previously shared she went through 28 hours of labor before welcoming her, also noted a valuable lesson she learned from her postpartum experience. "No matter how clueless you are about motherhood," she began, "you still know your body best! Listen to it! Yes, recovery is tough and everyone is different but your instincts are valid (and probably right)." The Bachelor alum later shared a video of her husband playing with their daughter, captioning it, "When Daddy is on duty." Blaine had praised his wife's strength on social media days before she revealed her postpartum complications and surgery. "Needless to say, feeling extra grateful and blessed this holiday season. Thankful for our growing family but most importantly to an incredibly loving, caring and strong wife (and now mother) in @andidorfman," he wrote on Instagram Dec. 25. "Harper and I are extremely lucky to have you as our navigational beacon. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!" Blaine and Andi married in Italy in 2023. Read on for updates on the love lives of more Bachelor Nation stars... Joan Vassos & Chock Chapple Status: Engaged After appearing on the first-ever season of The Golden Bachelor and leaving Gerry Turner 's season early, Joan Vassos handed out the roses on the debut season of The Golden Bachelorette . It was there that she met and got engaged to contestant Chock Chapple . "We are living proof that no matter what life throws at you that there is still hope, even at our age," Joan said on The Golden Bachelorette 's November 2024 finale before Chock proposed in Bora Bora . "I waited 'til this moment in this amazing location to tell you that I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to wake up next to you in the morning, and I want to kiss you when I go to bed at night." Jenn Tran & Devin Strader Status: Split During the season 21 finale of The Bachelorette , it looked like The Bachelor alum Jenn Tran was finally getting her happy ending with her final pick Devin Strader . But Jenn, 26, revealed on After the Final Rose back in September that Devin, 28, gave her the cold shoulder as soon as the cameras stopped rolling. "He was making bold proclamations of love and then suddenly the next day he was like, nothing and he denied ever being in love," Jenn told host Jesse Palmer during the Sept. 3 episode. "All the promises he had made to me, all of the love that he had wanted to give to me wasn't there anymore." Drama continued to play out when Devin shared a 13-minute video recounting his side of the story to Instagram, where in addition to taking "accountability” he shared insight into why he ended the relationship in a 15-minute phone call. While Jenn alleged he dumped her during the call in August, he claimed that Jenn demanded to know what was wrong as he tried to find a way to break the news in person. "I didn't really know what else to do," he explained, noting he had been waiting to tell her in person. "She kind of forced my hand." Since then, Jenn waltzed over to Dancing With the Stars and possibly into the heart of her partner Sasha Farber as they have continued to spark romance rumors since their Oct. 29 elimination. Victoria Fuller & Greg Grippo Status: Split In November 2022, Greg Grippo (one of Katie Thurston 's suitors on The Bachelorette a year prior) joined Victoria Fuller on the season eight finale of Bachelor in Paradise . There, the two announced that they were in a relationship. In April 2024, he revealed the two had called it quits . Status: Split Before Victoria Fuller and Greg Grippo went public with their romance on the finale of Bachelor in Paradise 's eighth season, she and her costar Johnny DePhillipo ended their engagement. Theresa Nist & Gerry Turner Status: Divorced Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist got engaged in November 2023 during the finale of the inaugural Golden Bachelor and tied the knot in a January 2024 televised ceremony. However, three months after their nuptials, the couple announced that they were breaking up. “Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations and we've looked closely at our situation, our living situation, so forth," Gerry said during a joint appearance on Good Morning America with Theresa April 2024. “We've come to the conclusion mutually that it's probably time for us to dissolve our marriage." They reached a divorce settlement in June 2024, according to court records reviewed by E! News. Joey Graziadei & Kelsey Anderson Status: Engaged After courting 32 potential brides , tennis pro Joey Graziadei found his perfect match in project manager Kelsey Anderson . "I can't wait another minute to tell you that I love you," Joey told his final rose recipient, before getting down on one knee during his season's March 2024 finale . "There is something about you. You have this infectious energy that makes me smile. It's a feeling I've never had before." Imagining his forever with the Louisiana native, he continued, "I have known for a while that I've wanted to have a beautiful life, but I truly didn't know how beautiful that life could be until I met you." Kat Izzo & John Henry Spurlock Status: Split Though underwater welder John Henry Spurlock (one of Charity Lawson 's suitors) and nurse Kat Izzo (she competed for Zach Shallcross ' heart) didn't connect until midway through season nine of Bachelor in Paradise , they were willing to dive into the deep end. "I'm going to try something a little different," he said while offering up an Ascher cut Neil Lane diamond. "I'm following my heart today. My heart's telling me that you are amazing, you are everything that I'm looking for." But days after the finale aired, the duo revealed they no longer saw forever in each other's eyes. "While our paths are taking different directions due to our career goals not aligning," they wrote in a joint Instagram post, "we are grateful for the love and support we’ve received from our family, friends, and Bachelor Nation." Eliza Isichei & Aaron Bryant Status: Split Despite her nerves about a Paradise engagement, an all-dressed-in-white Eliza Isichei (one of Clayton Echard 's exes) happily accepted Aaron Bryant 's oceanfront proposal. Touched by the software salesman's decision to reach out to her mom for her blessing, she gushed, "I knew I was not in control of what was going to come out of my mouth." The finale's coda acknowledged Charity's ex and marketing manager Eliza had hit some bumps after returning from Mexico, and days later they announced they had officially ended their engagement. "Tricky emotions watching it all unfold," he wrote on Instagram December 2023. "We’re leading our amicable split with nothing but positivity and mutual respect for one another." Aven Jones & Kylee Russell Status: Split Though postpartum nurse Kylee Russell lamented boyfriend Aven Jones ' unwillingness to get down on bended knee—a move he was purportedly prepared to make while romancing Bachelorette Rachel Recchia —she ultimately accepted Aven's Paradise proposal to "get out of here and make it work." Though that meant her planned engagement gown remained packed, "I just had to do what I felt was right," she said. "Love is all about taking risk." Two days after their December 2023 finale aired, she announced on her Instagram Stories that their relationship had "dissolved due to multiple infidelities." Aven later issued an apology to Kylee, writing, "I have made major mistakes in the relationship and hurt someone who was very close to me." Charity Lawson & Dotun Olubeko Status: Engaged "I am happy with how this season turns out!" Charity Lawson teased to E! News, a statement that way undersold her August 2023 finale. Dropping to one knee, integrative medicine specialist Dotun Olubeko proclaimed their love to be "perfect," asking the child and family therapist, "Would you do me the honor of turning this fairytale into a reality?" While their happily ever after awaits—the pair said they're considering a 2025 or 2026 wedding—the Georgia native will first take a spin through the Dancing With the Stars ballroom. "All right, baby," Dotun told Charity on The Bachelorette: After the Final Rose . "So I know you like to cut up, you like to dance and you like to get down. You know that we've talked about this—about how amazing this opportunity would be. And I am so happy to be the one to tell you that you're gonna be on Dancing With the Stars ! Baby, let's go!" Zach Shallcross & Kaity Biggar Status: Engaged Zach shall get his happy ending. Despite more than a few Fantasy Suite-related stumbles, Zach Shallcross ended season 27 in March 2023 down on one knee . "I am so in love with you," he told travel nurse Kaity Biggar . "You are my world. The love I feel for you is something I could have never imagined." In July 2023, the Texas-based duo made an even bigger step in their journey, with Kaity sharing on Instagram , "Officially roommates." They're currently planning their October 2025 vows. Status: Split Ah, Mom and Dad. Though they left BIP season seven hand-in-Neil-Lane-diamond-free-hand, Danielle Maltby , who lost her fiancé to a drug overdose years before she competed on Nick Viall 's season, and single dad Michael Allio (he shares 7-year-old son James with his late wife) seemed slated for Bachelor Nation couple goals status. But a year after Maltby relocated from Nashville to be with Allio in Ohio, he confirmed they'd split. "We both threw a lot into this relationship and it's really awful when it doesn't work out," Allio said on a September 2023 episode of Jason Tartick 's Trading Secrets podcast . "When things don't work out, when you realize that love is there, but you're not necessarily compatible, you mourn the loss, not of just that person and that friend in your life, but also the future that you had envisioned." Status: Split "I will love you until the end of time. I will love you until my last breath and I want to start forever with you," Brandon Jones proclaimed while proposing to "best friend" Serene Russell on season seven of Paradise . Alas, their journey was cut short. Five months after their engagement aired, Brandon (a runner-up on Michelle Young 's season) and Serene (who romanced Clayton Echard ) announced they had split in a joint May 2023 statement. "We have tried to work privately on our relationship which has been incredibly challenging in the public eye," they wrote on Instagram. "This has been immensely hard to accept and painful, as there is a lot of love between the two of us. We are deeply hurting and can only ask that there be no hate." Status: Split Pilot Rachel's engagement to general contractor Tino Franco stalled when he kissed another woman while their 2022 season was still airing. "I do not stand by what I did at all," he said on The Viall Files . "It was not cool. It wasn't fair to Rachel, and it haunts me daily still. It's something I'm ashamed of and certainly wish I could have done it differently like a million times over." Status: Split Well, it was certainly a journey. Susie Evans initially rejected Bachelor Clayton Echard 's overtures during the 2022 finale only to reunite with him off-camera...and then split once again six months later . But the L.A.-based videographer insists their breakup was for the right reasons . "The people around me could see that my sparkle had dulled and I was far from thriving," she wrote in a November 2022 post for her blog "Susie Was Like." She acknowledged they "had joyous moments often, but deep down I was struggling and felt misaligned with the best version of me." Susie went on to date Bachelor Nation member Justin Glaze , before the couple announced they had also broken up in August 2024. Status: Split Minnesota elementary school teacher Michelle accepted a Neil Lane sparkler from Texas-based sales exec Nayte Olukoya —and a $200,000 check from producers to put toward their future home. But, ultimately, the pair just didn't have the right foundation, announcing their breakup six months after their season's finale aired in December 2021. Though he said on The Viall Files , "There was lots of ups and downs, lots of arguments, lots of fights and just not really clicking, not really seeing eye-to-eye," Nayte acknowledged that not having that final split conversation in person was "a dick move." Michelle started dating Jack Leius in 2023, and they announced their engagement the following year. Status: Split Viewers fully got onboard with Maurissa Gunn and Riley Christian 's vision of a future filled with sweet Sunday mornings. But ultimately the BIP season seven duo only got a couple dozen weekends together. "We have decided to go our separate ways," patient coordinator Maurissa (who romanced Peter Weber ) and attorney Riley (one of Tayshia Adams ' suitors) announced in a joint January 2022 statement. "Never did we imagine this, but we've come to a point where we both need to work on ourselves." Demi Burnett & Kristian Haggerty Status: Split Bachelor Nation's first same-sex couple got engaged on season six of Bachelor in Paradise but announced their 2019 split on Halloween. "What has always been at the forefront of our relationship is love and care for one another. Our priority is doing what is best for us. With a heavy heart full of love for one another we have decided it is best for us to take a step back from our relationship," they said in a joint statement posted on Instagram. "We ultimately want what is best for us in the long run and for us right now, that means being apart and growing individually." Noah Erb & Abigail Heringer Status: Engaged Paradise lost? Not quite. Though Noah Erb and Abigail Heringer broke up in Mexico during the BIP 's seventh season, they realized they could see forever in each other's eyes. Initially settling in San Diego, the travel nurse (who competed for Tayshia's heart) and the financial manager (who received Matt James ' first impression rose) recently purchased a place in his hometown of Tulsa. "About to enter our Chip and Joanna Gaines era because your girl bought her very first house!!!" Abigail wrote on Instagram in July 2023. "Excited to start our next chapter and for all the memories we'll create here!!" Starting with a few wedding plans. Ahead of their move, Noah proposed at a beachfront San Diego home in August 2023. Status: Married Never hurts to have a little practice run. While planning their September 2023 vows, Serena Pitt (a finalist on Matt James' season) and Joe Amabile (the Chicago grocery store owner who found fame after Becca Kufrin sent him home night one in 2018) decided to just do the damn thing at City Hall near their New York City digs, roughly one year after leaving Paradise engaged. "JUST MARRIED !!" Serena, now hosting the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast with her husband, captioned the October 2022 video. "We are still having a wedding this September but who doesn't want to get married twice!" Kenny Braasch & Mari Pepin Status: Married "Mari, I am f--king so in love with you," boy band manager Kenny Braasch said as he slipped that Neil Lane diamond onto Mari Pepin 's finger on the 2021 Paradise finale. "And I literally, like, I can't see my life without you." So the Maryland beauty queen, who initially charmed Bachelor Matt, moved to Kenny's native Chicago and set about planning their forever. And before she and Kenny (eliminated by Tayshia Adams in week five) wed in a 65-guest oceanfront ceremony in Puerto Rico in November 2023, they made their love permanent, getting inked with matching tattoos during a May 2023 trip to the Bahamas. Status: Married Former Bachelorette Becca and Thomas Jacobs (one of Katie Thurston's suitors) got together on Bachelor in Paradise season seven in 2021, broke up on the show, then reconciled after production wrapped. In May 2022, they announced they were engaged, and that Becca proposed. "I hope that other people can now feel empowered and say it's okay to bend the rules," she told E! News . The real estate agent returned the favor that October. In September 2023, the two welcomed their first child , son Benson. Wrote Becca on Instagram , "No amount of words can begin to capture the amount of love and awe we have over this tiny man." Though she's awfully fond of her 6-foot-6 guy as well. Weeks after bringing home Benson, the pair wed in a spontaneous Oct. 13 ceremony. Status: Split On The Bachelorette 's season 17 finale in 2021, Katie got engaged to Blake Moynes . The pair first declared their love for one another during their overnight date, which involved a paintball excursion, a cowboy tub and a conversation under the stars. Getting down on one knee, Blake told Katie, "You deserve the world, and I'm excited to support you and be there for you every day moving forward." Three months after the proposal aired, the couple announced their split . They explained in matching statements, "We are so grateful for the moments we shared together and the entire journey that has unfolded this year, but we ultimately have concluded that we are not compatible as life partners, and it is the most caring choice for both of us to move forward independently." She is now engaged to comedian Jeff Arcuri . Rachael Kirkconnell & Matt James Status: Dating In the years since Matt and graphic designer Rachael Kirkconnell left his 2021 season together (then briefly split and eventually reunited), they've faced many a breakup rumor. But, yes , they're still sweet on each other. "I think everybody needs to take a break from social media," he exclusively told E! News at a July 18 Baskin-Robbins event. "Our lives are lived so much in front of our phones that when anybody steps out of being on their phone 24/7, people think it's the end of the world." Marriage remains the end-game for the L.A.-based pair. "I think the good thing about our relationship is we go at our own pace," the First Impressions: Off Screen Conversations With a Bachelor on Race, Family, and Forgiveness author told E! News in 2022 . "And you've seen with other couples—they force the engagement and they're not together anymore. So, I think what we got is a working recipe and we're gonna get there." Status: Split After stepping in to complete Clare Crawley 's 2020 season of The Bachelorette , Tayshia met and fell in love with Zac Clark . Though they left her season engaged, the former Bachelorette lead-turned-co-host later revealed that their relationship had some ups and downs. "It's hard to be in a new relationship and then kind of go away for a couple of weeks, you know what I mean? And this is me being real and honest," she said on The Ben and Ashley I. Almost Famous podcast in August 2021. She continued, "I think after that, it was kinda like we need to remember why we were with each other. And I think that that's absolutely normal." In November 2021, E! News confirmed the two had gone their separate ways. Status: Split Clare fell head over heels for Dale Moss during season 16 of The Bachelorette . In fact, the two were engaged by the fourth episode . The surprises didn't stop there as, weeks after Clare's replacement Tayshia nabbed an engagement of her own , Dale took to social media and revealed his love story with the hair dresser was already over. The pair sparked reconciliation rumors a month later when they were spotted together. Fast forward to July 2021, after several reunions, and Clare and Dale were fully back together —ring and all. But that September, the two called it quits again. Clare is now happily married to Ryan Dawkins and they're expecting their first daughter together . Status: Split After his brief engagement to winner Hannah Ann Sluss and then subsequent split from runner-up Madison Prewett , fans were hopeful that the third time would be the charm for Peter. Alas, his romance with The Bachelor season 24 standout Kelley Flanagan wasn't meant to be, the pilot sharing on New Year's Eve 2020 that their nine-month relationship was grounded . "While our relationship was filled with countless beautiful memories, our relationship simply didn't work out in the end," Pete posted to Instagram. "Kelley is someone I will always have a special love for." The pair attempted to take flight once more in 2022, before revealing this past May that their romance had reached its final destination . At the crossroads of news and opinion, 'Morning Joe' hosts grapple with aftermath of Trump meeting The reaction of those who defended “Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski for meeting with President-elect Trump sounds almost quaint in the days of opinionated journalism. Doesn't it makes sense, they said, for hosts of a political news show to meet with such an important figure? But given how “Morning Joe” has attacked Trump, its viewers felt insulted. Many reacted quickly by staying away. It all reflects the broader trend of opinion crowding out traditional journalist in today's marketplace, and the expectations that creates among consumers. By mid-week, the show's audience was less than two-thirds what it has typically been this year. Pilot dies in plane crash in remote woods of New York, puppy found alive WINDHAM, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a pilot and at least one dog he was transporting died when a small plane crashed in the snowy woods of the Catskill Mountains, though a puppy on the flight was found alive with two broken legs. The Greene County sheriff’s office says Seuk Kim of Springfield, Virginia, was flying from Maryland to Albany, New York, when the plane crashed at about 6:10 p.m. Sunday in a remote area. Officials believe the pilot died from the impact. The surviving dog was hospitalized, while a third dog was not located. The flight was connected with a not-for-profit group that transports rescue animals. Warren Buffett gives away another $1.1B and plans for distributing his $147B fortune after his death OMAHA, Neb. A desert oasis outside of Dubai draws a new caravan: A family of rodents from Argentina AL QUDRA LAKES, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A desert oasis hidden away in the dunes in the far reaches of skyscraper-studded Dubai has drawn a surprising new set of weary world travelers: a pack of Argentinian rodents. A number of Patagonian mara, a rabbit-like mammal with long legs, big ears and a body like a hoofed animal, now roam the grounds of Al Qudra Lakes, typically home to gazelle and other desert creatures of the United Arab Emirates. How they got there remains a mystery in the UAE, a country where exotic animals have ended up in the private homes and farms of the wealthy. But the pack appears to be thriving there and likely have survived several years already in a network of warrens among the dunes.

Daniel Jones is free to sign with any NFL team after clearing waivers on Monday, which also means the team that signs the former New York Giants quarterback won't be on the hook for the nearly $12 million that was remaining on his contract this year or his $23 million injury guarantee. Jones was released at his request by the Giants on Saturday after the former first-round pick was benched last week. He reportedly wants to join a contender, and there are expected to be multiple teams interested. The two teams reported to have the most initial interest in Jones are also being offered as the most likely to sign him by one sportsbook. The Baltimore Ravens currently have journeyman backup Josh Johnson behind starting quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jones would potentially provide a third option, and one whose mobility could make him an intriguing fit in offensive coordinator Todd Monken's system The Ravens were installed as the 2/1 favorites to land Jones ahead of the Minnesota Vikings (5/2), who have veterans Nick Mullens and Brett Rypien behind starter Sam Darnold. They would likely view Jones as an upgrade. "I really can't get into too much about any short-term or long-term," Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday when asked about Jones, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. "I can just say that I've been a big fan of Daniel's for a long time and I hope wherever his next step takes him, it's a good opportunity for him." The Las Vegas Raiders (5/1) don't fall into the category of contenders after falling to 2-9 amid a seven-game losing streak. However, they could provide the most immediate opportunity to play with Gardner Minshew suffering a season-ending broken collarbone on Sunday that is expected to end his season. Second-year quarterback Aidan O'Connell is close to returning from a thumb injury, but coach Antonio Pierce acknowledged after Sunday's game that, "We're going to need somebody, right?" If O'Connell isn't ready to face the Kansas City Chiefs on Black Friday, Desmond Ridder is expected to get the start. The Dallas Cowboys (7/1) would fall into a similar category, with Dak Prescott out for the season following hamstring surgery and being replaced by Cooper Rush. Another intriguing possibility lies with Detroit, where the 10-1 Lions' offense is rolling with Jared Goff at the helm. However, should he go down to injury the only other quarterback on the roster is rookie Hendon Hooker. That has contributed to the Lions having 7/1 odds to sign Jones. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The president of South Korea early Wednesday lifted the martial law he imposed on the country hours earlier, bending to political pressure after in which troops surrounded parliament and lawmakers voted to reject military rule. President Yoon Suk Yeol, who appeared likely to be impeached over his actions, imposed martial law late Tuesday out of frustration with the opposition, vowing to eliminate “anti-state” forces as he who control parliament and that he accuses of sympathizing with communist North Korea. Police and military personnel were seen leaving the grounds of parliament following the bipartisan vote to overrule the president, and the declaration was formally lifted around 4:30 a.m. during a Cabinet meeting. Parliament acted swiftly after martial law was imposed, with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik declaring that the law was “invalid” and that lawmakers would “protect democracy with the people.” In all, martial law was in effect for about six hours. The president’s surprising move harkened back to an era of authoritarian leaders that the country has not seen since the 1980s, and it was immediately denounced by the opposition and the leader of Yoon’s own conservative party. , leader of the liberal Democratic Party, which holds the majority in the 300-seat parliament, said the party’s lawmakers would remain in the Assembly’s main hall until Yoon formally lifted his order. Woo applauded how troops quickly left the Assembly after the vote. “Even with our unfortunate memories of military coups, our citizens have surely observed the events of today and saw the maturity of our military,” Woo said. While announcing his plan to lift martial law, Yoon continued to criticize parliament’s attempts to impeach key government officials and senior prosecutors. He said lawmakers had engaged in “unscrupulous acts of legislative and budgetary manipulation that are paralyzing the functions of the state.” Jo Seung-lae, a Democratic lawmaker, claimed that security camera footage following Yoon’s declaration showed that troops moved in a way that suggested they were trying to arrest Lee, Woo and even Han Dong-hoon, the leader of Yoon’s People Power Party. Officials from Yoon’s office and the Defense Ministry did not respond to requests for comment early Wednesday. Seemingly hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the Assembly, waving banners and calling for Yoon’s impeachment. Some protesters scuffled with troops ahead of the lawmakers’ vote, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or major property damage. At least one window was broken as troops attempted to enter the Assembly building. One woman tried unsuccessfully to pull a rifle away from one of the soldiers, while shouting “Aren’t you embarrassed?” Under South Korea’s constitution, the president can declare martial law during “wartime, war-like situations or other comparable national emergency states” that require the use of military force to maintain peace and order. It was questionable whether South Korea is currently in such a state. When martial law is declared, “special measures” can be employed to restrict freedom of press, freedom of assembly and other rights, as well as the power of courts. The constitution also states that the president must oblige when the National Assembly demands the lifting of martial law with a majority vote. Following Yoon’s announcement of martial law, South Korea’s military proclaimed that parliament and other political gatherings that could cause “social confusion” would be suspended, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said. The military said anyone who violated the decree could be arrested without a warrant. In Washington, the White House said the U.S. was “seriously concerned” by the events in Seoul. A spokesperson for the National Security Council said President Joe Biden’s administration was not notified in advance of the martial law announcement and was in contact with the South Korean government. Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said there was no effect on the more than 27,000 U.S. service members based in South Korea. The South Korean military also said that the country’s striking doctors should return to work within 48 hours, Yonhap said. Thousands of doctors have been striking for months over government plans to expand the number of students at medical schools. Soon after martial law was declared, the parliament speaker called on his YouTube channel for all lawmakers to gather at the National Assembly. He urged military and law enforcement personnel to “remain calm and hold their positions. All 190 lawmakers who participated in the vote supported the lifting of martial law. At one point, television footage showed police officers blocking the entrance of the National Assembly and helmeted soldiers carrying rifles in front of the building. An Associated Press photographer saw at least three helicopters, likely from the military, that landed inside the Assembly grounds, while two or three helicopters circled above the site. The leader of Yoon’s conservative party called the decision to impose martial law “wrong.” Lee, who narrowly lost to Yoon in the 2022 presidential election, said Yoon’s announcement was “illegal and unconstitutional.” Yoon said during a televised speech that martial law would help “rebuild and protect” the country from “falling into the depths of national ruin.” He said he would “eradicate pro-North Korean forces and protect the constitutional democratic order.” “I will eliminate anti-state forces as quickly as possible and normalize the country,” he said, while asking the people to believe in him and tolerate “some inconveniences.” Yoon — whose approval rating dipped in recent months — has struggled to push his agenda against an opposition-controlled parliament since taking office in 2022. His party has been locked in an impasse with the liberal opposition over next year’s budget bill. The opposition has also attempted to impeach three top prosecutors, including the chief of the central Seoul prosecutors’ office, in what the conservatives have called a vendetta against their criminal investigations of Lee, who has been seen as the favorite for the next presidential election in 2027 in opinion polls. During his televised announcement, Yoon also described the opposition as “shameless pro-North Korean anti-state forces who are plundering the freedom and happiness of our citizens.” He did not elaborate. Yoon has taken a hard line on North Korea over its nuclear ambitions, departing from the policies of his liberal predecessor, Moon Jae-in, who pursued inter-Korean engagement. Yoon has also dismissed calls for independent investigations into scandals involving his wife and top officials, drawing quick, strong rebukes from his political rivals. Yoon’s move was the first declaration of martial law since the country’s democratization in 1987. The country’s last previous martial law was in October 1979, following the assassination of former military dictator Park Chung-hee. Sydney Seiler, Korean chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, argued that the move was symbolic for Yoon to express his frustration with the opposition-controlled parliament. “He has nothing to lose,” said Seiler, comparing Yoon’s move to the Hail Mary pass in American football, with a slim chance of success. Now Yoon faces likely impeachment, a scenario that was also possible before he made the bold move, Seiler said. Natalia Slavney, research analyst at the Stimson Center’s 38 North website that focuses on Korean affairs, said Yoon’s imposition of martial law was “a serious backslide of democracy" that followed a “worrying trend of abuse” since he took office in 2022. South Korea “has a robust history of political pluralism and is no stranger to mass protests and swift impeachments,” Slavney said, citing the example of former President Park Geun-hye, the country’s first female president, who was ousted from office and imprisoned for . Associated Press writers Hyung-jin Kim in Seoul, South Korea, and Matt Lee, Didi Tang and Tara Copp in Washington contributed to this report.By Nora Eckert and David Shepardson DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors needed to exit its Cruise robotaxi business, most Wall Street analysts agreed on Wednesday, but the automaker's decision to do so was still a disappointing end for an operation that GM had touted as a potential $50 billion revenue generator by 2030. The largest U.S. automaker on Tuesday pulled the plug on Cruise after evaluating the continued investments needed in a competitive space, executives said, adding they intend to fold some of Cruise's talent into GM to continue development of driver assistance systems. "We consider the news a step in the right direction for GM, as we think investors were losing patience with its hefty spending (~$10B) related to robotaxi development with very little to show for its investment," Garrett Nelson, analyst at CFRA Research wrote. GM shares jumped 3% after-hours on Tuesday immediately after the announcement, but gave back those gains during Wednesday's regular session and were down about 1% in late afternoon. Nelson said the announcement was "a black eye for the credibility of GM management that, as recently as last year, told investors the Cruise business could generate $50 billion in annual revenue by 2030." For the year to date, GM has far outpaced its competitors. Its stock is up 45% for 2024, while Ford's is down 14% and Stellantis is down 37%. GM CEO Mary Barra was already scheduled to speak with reporters Wednesday evening. She will likely face questions on cost-cutting moves the automaker is taking as it navigates turbulence in EV demand, changing technology and a new presidential administration. “This is the latest in the series of decisions that GM has announced which underscore our focus on having the right technology for the future of our company and the industry and reflects our commitment to execute with speed and efficiency," Barra told analysts Tuesday. GM recently scaled back plans for electric vehicles, sold a stake in one of its joint venture battery plants and recorded a $5 billion loss on its China business as it restructures. GM is now doubling down on its core business: making gasoline-powered pickup trucks and other large vehicles. Cruise's competitors - including Alphabet's Waymo, Baidu and Tesla - are well funded, and may have better technology, analysts said. Waymo, which is expanding its autonomous ride-hailing services, is still losing billions of dollars per year. Barclays noted Alphabet, which has over $100 billion in earnings annually, can absorb costs associated with Waymo's development. GM, however, is expected to record earnings of $14 billion to $15 billion for 2024. "It’s clear from Waymo that an AV robotaxi business is best owned by an entity with deep pockets," Barclays said. It’s an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world’s premier racing series, and we’re committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world," GM President Mark Reuss said. Andretti in September stepped aside from leading his namesake organization, so the 11th team will be called Cadillac F1 and be run by new Andretti Global majority owners Dan Towriss and Mark Walter. Walter is the chief executive of financial services firm Guggenheim Partners and the controlling owner of both the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers and Premier League club Chelsea. “We’re excited to partner with General Motors in bringing a dynamic presence to Formula 1," Towriss said. “Together, we’re assembling a world-class team that will embody American innovation and deliver unforgettable moments to race fans around the world.” Mario Andretti, the 1978 F1 world champion, will have an ambassador role with Cadillac F1. But his son, Michael, will have no official position with the organization now that he has scaled back his involvement with Andretti Global. “The Cadillac F1 Team is made up of a strong group of people that have worked tirelessly to build an American works team,” Michael Andretti posted on social media. “I’m very proud of the hard work they have put in and congratulate all involved on this momentous next step. I will be cheering for you!” The approval has been in works for weeks but was held until after last weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix to not overshadow the showcase event of the Liberty Media portfolio. Max Verstappen won his fourth consecutive championship in Saturday night's race, the third and final stop in the United States for the top motorsports series in the world. Grid expansion in F1 is both infrequent and often unsuccessful. Four teams were granted entries in 2010 that should have pushed the grid to 13 teams and 26 cars for the first time since 1995. One team never made it to the grid and the other three had vanished by 2017. There is only one American team on the current F1 grid — owned by California businessman Gene Haas — but it is not particularly competitive and does not field American drivers. Andretti’s dream was to field a truly American team with American drivers. The fight to add this team has been going on for three-plus years and F1 initially denied the application despite approval from F1 sanctioning body FIA . The existing 10 teams, who have no voice in the matter, also largely opposed expansion because of the dilution in prize money and the billions of dollars they’ve already invested in the series. Andretti in 2020 tried and failed to buy the existing Sauber team. From there, he applied for grid expansion and partnered with GM, the top-selling manufacturer in the United States. The inclusion of GM was championed by the FIA and president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who said Michael Andretti’s application was the only one of seven applicants to meet all required criteria to expand F1’s current grid. “General Motors is a huge global brand and powerhouse in the OEM world and is working with impressive partners," Ben Sulayem said Monday. "I am fully supportive of the efforts made by the FIA, Formula 1, GM and the team to maintain dialogue and work towards this outcome of an agreement in principle to progress this application." Despite the FIA's acceptance of Andretti and General Motors from the start, F1 wasn't interested in Andretti — but did want GM. At one point, F1 asked GM to find another team to partner with besides Andretti. GM refused and F1 said it would revisit the Andretti application if and when Cadillac had an engine ready to compete. “Formula 1 has maintained a dialogue with General Motors, and its partners at TWG Global, regarding the viability of an entry following the commercial assessment and decision made by Formula 1 in January 2024,” F1 said in a statement. “Over the course of this year, they have achieved operational milestones and made clear their commitment to brand the 11th team GM/Cadillac, and that GM will enter as an engine supplier at a later time. Formula 1 is therefore pleased to move forward with this application process." Yet another major shift in the debate over grid expansion occurred earlier this month with the announced resignation of Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei, who was largely believed to be one of the biggest opponents of the Andretti entry. “With Formula 1’s continued growth plans in the US, we have always believed that welcoming an impressive US brand like GM/Cadillac to the grid and GM as a future power unit supplier could bring additional value and interest to the sport," Maffei said. "We credit the leadership of General Motors and their partners with significant progress in their readiness to enter Formula 1." There is only one American team on the current F1 grid — owned by California businessman Gene Haas — but it is not particularly competitive and does not field American drivers. "We credit the leadership of General Motors and their partners with significant progress in their readiness to enter Formula 1." AP auto racing: https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing

State Administration Council Chairman Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing received a delegation led by Mr Sholban Kara-Ool, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, at the Credentials Hall of the Office of the State Administration Council Chairman in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning. After the meeting, the Senior General and the Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation exchanged gifts and posed for the documentary photo. — MNA/KTZHThe large mysterious drones reported flying over parts of New Jersey in recent weeks appear to avoid detection by traditional methods, like helicopters and radio, according to a state lawmaker briefed Wednesday by the Department of Homeland Security. In a post on the social media platform X, Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia described the drones as up to 6 feet in diameter and sometimes traveling with their lights switched off. The Morris County Republican was among several state and local lawmakers who met with state police and Homeland Security officials to discuss the spate of sightings that range from the New York City area through New Jersey, westward into parts of Pennsylvania, including over Philadelphia. The devices do not appear to be being flown by hobbyists, Fantasia wrote. Dozens of mysterious nighttime flights started last month and have raised growing concern among residents and officials. Part of the worry stems from the flying objects initially being spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility; and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. Drones are legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial use, but they are subject to local and Federal Aviation Administration regulations and flight restrictions. Operators must be FAA certified. Most, but not all, of the drones spotted in New Jersey were larger than those typically used by hobbyists. The number of sightings has increased in recent days, though officials say many of the objects seen may have been planes rather than drones. It’s also possible that a single drone has been reported more than once. Gov. Phil Murphy and law enforcement officials have stressed that the drones don’t appear to threaten public safety. The FBI has been investigating and has asked residents to share any videos, photos or other information they may have. Two Republican Jersey Shore-area congressmen, U.S. Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, have called on the military to shoot down the drones. However, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters Wednesday that “our initial assessment here is that these are not drones or activities coming from a foreign entity or adversary.” Many municipal lawmakers have called for more restrictions on who is entitled to fly the unmanned devices. At least one state lawmaker proposed a temporary ban on drone flights in the state. “This is something we’re taking deadly seriously. I don’t blame people for being frustrated,” Murphy said earlier this week. A spokesman for the Democratic governor said he did not attend Wednesday’s meeting. Republican Assemblyman Erik Peterson, whose district includes parts of the state where the drones have been reported, said he also attended Wednesday’s meeting at a state police facility in West Trenton. The session lasted for about 90 minutes. Peterson said DHS officials were generous with their time, but appeared dismissive of some concerns, saying not all the sightings reported have been confirmed to involve drones. So who or what is behind the flying objects? Where are they coming from? What are they doing? “My understanding is they have no clue,” Peterson said. A message seeking comment was left with the Department of Homeland Security. Most of the drones have been spotted along coastal areas and some were recently reported flying over a large reservoir in Clinton. Sightings also have been reported in neighboring states. James Edwards, of Succasunna, New Jersey, said he has seen a few drones flying over his neighborhood since last month. “It raises concern mainly because there’s so much that’s unknown,” Edwards said Wednesday. “There are lots of people spouting off about various conspiracies that they believe are in play here, but that only adds fuel to the fire unnecessarily. We need to wait and see what is really happening here, not let fear of the unknown overtake us.”

BOULDER, Colo. — Travis Hunter is a throwback-type player — an elite receiver one moment, a lockdown cornerback the next — who rarely leaves the field and has a knack for making big plays all over it. The Colorado Buffaloes' two-way standout ( see: unicorn ) even celebrates at an elite level, unveiling imaginative dance moves following touchdowns and interceptions, some of which include the Heisman Trophy pose. It's one of the many awards he's in line to win. Hunter is the The Associated Press college football player of the year, receiving 26 of 43 votes Thursday from a panel of AP Top 25 voters. Boise State tailback Ashton Jeanty finished second with 16 votes and Arizona State running back Cameron Skattebo received one vote. Hunter kept piling up the hardware later Thursday night. He won the Walter Camp Award as player of the year along with the Chuck Bednarik Award as the top defensive player and the Biletnikoff Award for the best wide receiver. People are also reading... "Couldn't do what I do without my team," Hunter said in an email on a trip to Las Vegas for an awards ceremony. "So I view being up for these awards as team awards." Jeanty won the Maxwell Award as college football's top player and the Doak Walker Award for the nation's top running back after leading the nation with 2,497 yards and 29 touchdowns. Miami's Cam Ward was the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Year award winner with a nation-best 36 passing touchdowns along with 4,123 passing yards. The coach of the year was Indiana's Curt Cignetti, who led his team to the playoffs after being picked to finish 17th of 18 Big Ten teams. South Carolina defensive end Kyle Kennard captured the Bronco Nagurski Trophy as the top defensive player, racking up 11 1/2 sacks and 18 1/2 tackles for loss. Ohio State center Seth McLaughlin, an Alabama transfer, won the Rimington Trophy. The Jim Thorpe Award as the best defensive back went to Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron, who led the Southeastern Conference with five interceptions. The top punter was USC's Eddie Czaplicki, who captured the Ray Guy Award. Louisiana's Kenneth Almendares was picked as the top placekicker, winning the Lou Groza Award. Georgia's Jalon Walker won the Butkus Award as the nation's best linebacker, heading into the playoffs with 57 tackles, including 6 1/2 sacks and 10 1/2 tackles for loss. Texas left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. was the Outland Trophy winner as the top interior lineman. Penn State's Tyler Warren won the John Mackey Award given to the most outstanding tight end after setting school single-season records with 67 catches for 808 yards. Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe won the William V. Campbell Award as the top scholar-athlete. Oregon leading tackler Bryce Boettcher captured the Burlsworth Trophy as the best player who started his career as a walk-on. But the biggest winner was Hunter. A player with his particular set of skills doesn't come around that often. He's a flashback to the days of Charles Woodson at Michigan or Champ Bailey at Georgia. Or even his coach, Deion Sanders, a two-way star in the NFL. The prospect of significant playing time on both sides of the ball is what led Hunter to join Sanders at Jackson State and why he followed Sanders to Boulder. "Coach Prime was the only coach who would consider allowing me to do what I'm doing," said Hunter, who's expected to be a top-five pick next spring in the NFL draft, possibly even the No. 1 overall selection. "He did it and knows what it takes — how much you have to be ready on both sides of the ball." Want to fuel Hunter? Simply tell him he can't. "I'm motivated when people tell me I can't do something," Hunter said. "That I can't dominate on both sides of the ball. I want to be an example for others that anything is possible. Keep pursuing your dreams." Hunter helped the 20th-ranked Buffaloes to a 9-3 record and a berth in the Alamo Bowl against No. 17 BYU (10-2) on Dec. 28. He played 688 defensive snaps and 672 more on offense — the lone Power Four conference player with 30-plus snaps on both sides of the ball, according to Colorado research. Hunter has already won a second straight Paul Hornung award as the game's most versatile player. He's up for the Walter Camp (player of the year), Maxwell (most outstanding player), the Biletnikoff (best receiver) and Bednarik (top defensive player) awards. And, of course, the Heisman, where he's the odds-on favorite to win over Jeanty this weekend. Hunter can join the late Rashaan Salaam as the only Colorado players to capture the Heisman. Salaam won it in 1994 after rushing for 2,055 yards. Hunter wasn't a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation's top defensive back. That drew the wrath of Sanders, who earned the award with Florida State in 1988 and vowed to give his trophy to Hunter. Hunter's high school coach, Lenny Gregory, knew he had a special player the summer of Hunter's freshman year. Gregory, then the coach at Collins Hill in Georgia, had a conditioning test for his players — run six 200-yard dashes with a minute of rest in between. Defensive backs had to complete each in under 32 seconds. Hunter never even got winded. He played safety, cornerback and receiver as a freshman and helped Collins Hill to a state title his senior season. "I remember just talking to colleges the spring of his ninth-grade year and telling coaches that this kid's going to be the No. 1 player in the country," recounted Gregory, who's now the coach at Gordon Central High in Calhoun, Georgia. "They'd look at him and laugh at me, 'What are you talking about? This scrawny kid? He's not big enough.' I was like, 'Just watch. Just watch.'" Hunter finished the regular season with 92 catches for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns as a receiver. On defense, he had four interceptions, broke up 11 passes and forced one crucial fumble, which secured an OT win over Baylor. Overall, Hunter had 92 receptions and allowed 22. He hauled in 14 receiving TDs and allowed just one. He was responsible for 53 first downs and gave up just six. He was targeted 119 times by quarterback Shedeur Sanders & Co. but only 39 times by opposing QBs. Hunter's likely final game in Boulder, a rout of Oklahoma State, was a three-touchdown, one-interception performance. "I'm used to seeing him do all this spectacular stuff," Shedeur Sanders said. "I'm used to all this stuff — you all are just now seeing it on national stage." AP Sports Writer John Zenor contributed to this report. Be the first to know Get local news delivered to your inbox!

NEW YORK (AP) — No ex-president had a more prolific and diverse publishing career than Jimmy Carter . His more than two dozen books included nonfiction, poetry, fiction, religious meditations and a children’s story. His memoir “An Hour Before Daylight” was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2002, while his 2006 best-seller “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” stirred a fierce debate by likening Israel’s policies in the West Bank to the brutal South African system of racial segregation. And just before his 100th birthday, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation honored him with a lifetime achievement award for how he wielded "the power of the written word to foster peace, social justice, and global understanding.” In one recent work, “A Full Life,” Carter observed that he “enjoyed writing” and that his books “provided a much-needed source of income.” But some projects were easier than others. “Everything to Gain,” a 1987 collaboration with his wife, Rosalynn, turned into the “worst threat we ever experienced in our marriage,” an intractable standoff for the facilitator of the Camp David accords and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. According to Carter, Rosalynn was a meticulous author who considered “the resulting sentences as though they have come down from Mount Sinai, carved into stone.” Their memories differed on various events and they fell into “constant arguments.” They were ready to abandon the book and return the advance, until their editor persuaded them to simply divide any disputed passages between them. “In the book, each of these paragraphs is identified by a ‘J’ or an ‘R,’ and our marriage survived,” he wrote. Here is a partial list of books by Carter: “Keeping Faith: Memoirs of a President” “The Blood of Abraham: Insights into the Middle East” (With Rosalynn Carter) “Everything to Gain: Making the Most of the Rest of Your Life” “An Outdoor Journal: Adventures and Reflections” “Turning Point: A Candidate, a State, and a Nation Come of Age” “Always a Reckoning, and Other Poems” (With daughter Amy Carter) “The Little Baby Snoogle-Fleejer” “Living Faith” “The Virtues of Aging” “An Hour Before Daylight: Memories of a Rural Boyhood” “Christmas in Plains: Memories” “The Hornet’s Nest: A Novel of the Revolutionary War” “Our Endangered Values: America’s Moral Crisis” “Faith & Freedom: The Christian Challenge for the World” “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” “A Remarkable Mother” “Beyond the White House” “We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land: A Plan That Will Work” “White House Diary” “NIV Lessons from Life Bible: Personal Reflections with Jimmy Carter” “A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power” “A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety” The Associated Press

Stocks closed lower Thursday as investors parsed a hotter-than-expected inflation update. A down day for some of Wall Street's biggest stocks – including Nvidia ( NVDA , -1.4%) and Tesla ( TSLA , -1.6%) – also weighed on sentiment. Ahead of the opening bell, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said the Producer Price Index (PPI), which measures what businesses are paying suppliers for goods, increased 0.4% month over month in November. Year over year, PPI was up 3% – the biggest annual increase since February 2023. Core PPI, which excludes food and energy prices, rose 0.1% from October to November and 3.5% in the past 12 months. "Concerns about still-strong service sector prices are now compounded by recent concerns about an acceleration in goods prices, as we also saw yesterday with the release of the Consumer Price Index ," says Raymond James analyst Eugenio Alemán . "It is still not clear if businesses will be able to pass these increases in prices to the end consumer, but it increases the red flags for Federal Reserve policymakers." Separate data from the Department of Labor showed initial jobless claims rose by 17,000 in the week ending December 7, to 242,000. The reports did little to move rate-cut expectations for the next Fed meeting . According to CME Group's FedWatch tool , futures traders are pricing in a 98% chance the central bank will lower the federal funds rate by a quarter-percentage point next Wednesday afternoon. ServiceTitan soars 42% in market debut In single-stock news, ServiceTitan ( TTAN ) jumped 42.3% in its market debut. The cloud company that provides business management software to services contractors priced its initial public offering (IPO) at $71 per share on Wednesday – well above its previous range of $65 to $67. The stock opened and closed today and hit a high of $105 in intraday action. The IPO market has picked up steam this year, with 141 offerings priced at this point – a 33% increase from 2023, according to Renaissance Capital . The robust activity is expected to continue into 2025, too, with fintech firms Klarna and Chime among the hottest upcoming IPOs to watch for. Adobe slumps on weak revenue guidance Elsewhere in the tech space, Adobe ( ADBE ) stock plunged 13.7% after the Photoshop parent reported earnings. While ADBE beat top- and bottom-line expectations for its fiscal fourth quarter, it issued lower-than-anticipated revenue guidance for its fiscal first quarter and full fiscal year. "Adobe reported decent fiscal fourth-quarter results, though net new Creative Cloud annual recurring revenue only shows modest growth (partially from a tough year-over-year comparison with Acrobat), and initiated fiscal 2025 guidance below expectations," says Oppenheimer analyst Brian Schwartz (Outperform, the equivalent of Buy). He goes on to say that investors may see increased competition and slow monetization of artificial intelligence (AI) offerings as hindering Adobe's growth and guidance. UnitedHealth keeps falling UnitedHealth Group ( UNH ) stock fell 3.4% after lawmakers introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at breaking up large healthcare companies and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). "Over the past decade, pharmacy benefit managers – the middlemen between pharmacies and insurance companies – have morphed into large healthcare conglomerates that exercise control over every link in the prescription drug delivery chain," the group of legislators that includes Senators Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Josh Hawley, R-Mo., wrote a joint press release. UnitedHealth owns the nation's second-largest PBM, Optum Rx. UNH was up more than 18% on a total return basis (price change plus dividends) for the year to date in mid-November but has nearly erased this gain following the fatal shooting of the CEO of the company's insurance unit . Shares are clinging to an X% lead at last check. As for the main indexes, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gave back 0.5% to 43,914 – its sixth straight loss and longest losing streak since April. The S&P 500 shed 0.5% to 6,051 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.7% to 19,902. On November 25, 2024, Dr Disrespect, real name Guy Beahm, announced that he had joined Rumble after years of being permanently banned on Twitch and months of being demonetized on YouTube. As per a statement from Rumble , the Doc will both lead Rumble’s gaming division and provide “exclusive content” on Rumble Premium, with his streams officially starting on December 2, 2024. Now, even more teases are afoot as Rumble’s CEO has given yet another hint at what’s to come for the platform. On November 25, Pavlovski retweeted a post he’d made in October, where he laid out “step one” of his plan to “have the biggest gaming streamer on the internet in 2025 on Rumble.” After signing the Doc, Pavlovski says Rumble is “on track to have the biggest gaming creator for 2025.” “Step 2 complete. More work ahead,” he wrote. On track to have the biggest gaming creator for 2025. Step 2 complete. ace wild bird food Bears general manager Ryan Poles was granted a reprieve complete with a second swing at hiring a head coach in Chicago. Poles will interview candidates and select a replacement for Matt Eberflus, who was fired Friday after the Bears' sixth consecutive loss and fourth of the season decided on a final play. "Ryan Poles is the general manager of the Chicago Bears, and he will remain the general manager of the Chicago Bears," president and CEO Kevin Warren said Monday. "Ryan will serve as the point person of our upcoming search for a head football coach. We will closely, we will work together on a daily basis to make sure we have the right person as our head football coach." Warren said the McCaskey family provided "all the resources" to build a championship environment. He confirmed that Thomas Brown, who a month ago was passing game coordinator before replacing Shane Waldron as offensive coordinator, will serve as interim head coach and shift from the press box to the sideline starting this week. Warren did not say whether Brown would automatically receive an interview for the full-time coaching position, which he said "will be the most coveted head coaching job in the National Football League." Poles said consideration will be given to candidates with the plan to develop rookie No. 1 pick Caleb Williams, but there are no set plans to involve the quarterback in the interview process. He said the Bears showed great progress through two seasons but couldn't sustain growth. "At the end of the day, we just came up short too many times," Poles said of firing Eberflus, his pick to be the Bears' head coach in January 2022. Brown promoted wide receivers coach Chris Beatty to interim offensive coordinator on Monday and announced that defensive coordinator Eric Washington will be the defensive play caller, a role Eberflus previously held. Trailing 23-20 on Thanksgiving Day, the Bears were within field-goal range when quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked. With 32 seconds remaining, Eberflus elected not to use his final timeout as Williams heaved an incompletion down the right sideline as time expired. "When you look at the end-of-the-game situations, detailing to finish in some of those moments. We all know a lot of games come down to those critical moments where we weren't able to get over the hump," Poles said. Eberflus said after the game that everything was handled properly and held a press conference via Zoom on Friday voicing confidence he'd have the team ready to play the 49ers this week. But three hours later, he was fired. Warren admitted the franchise could've handled the timing better, but clarified there was no decision on Eberflus' status at the time of his media session. "The decision was made to terminate the employment of head coach Matt Eberflus," Warren said 72 hours later. "We try to do everything in a professional manner. That decision was made on Friday." "Coach Eberflus had his press conference, we had not made a final decision. I think you know me, you know Ryan you know George McCaskey. One thing we stand for is family, integrity, doing it the right way. In retrospect, could we have done it better? Absolutely." Eberflus, 54, went 14-32 in two-plus seasons. Quarterly net revenues were RMB539.4 million (US$76.9 million) 1 Quarterly lidar shipments were 134,208 units SHANGHAI, Nov. 25, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hesai Group (“Hesai” or the “Company”), (NASDAQ: HSAI), the global leader in three-dimensional light detection and ranging (lidar) solutions, today announced its unaudited financial results for the three months ended September 30, 2024. Operational Highlights Management Remarks “We are thrilled to share that our business continues to thrive and advance on a strong growth path,” said Yifan “David” Li, Hesai’s Co-Founder and CEO. “This quarter, we have made significant strides in the ADAS market, securing new design wins, partnerships, and development programs with key players, including a Top 3 OEM in Japan, SAIC Volkswagen, Leapmotor, and a premium EV brand backed by a leading Chinese automotive group. We also have reached a key milestone in our global expansion by successfully delivering B-sample units for our worldwide shipping programs with a leading global automotive OEM. OEMs at home and abroad have widely recognized lidar's essential safety features as a critical component in their holistic safety systems, similar to an ‘active’ seat belt or airbag. Furthermore, lidar’s versatility, with applications in emerging areas such as industrial robotics, smart factories and logistics, continues to garner attention. Our latest flagship product, OT128, a 360° mechanical, automotive-grade long-range lidar, is designed for scalable deployment in robotaxi and industrial applications. We are actively exploring new use cases and engaging with customers across both ADAS and AM sectors, leveraging our full lineup of versatile lidars. “I am also delighted to announce that Andrew Fan has joined us as our Chief Financial Officer. Andrew brings a wealth of experience in financial strategy and corporate finance, as well as an impressive track record of driving growth and operational efficiency in dynamic industries. His insights and leadership will be invaluable as we navigate the evolving landscape and continue to strengthen our position in the global lidar industry,” Dr. Li continued. “Andrew's strategic vision aligns seamlessly with our goals, and I believe his commitment to innovation and financial rigor will help us unlock new levels of success. I am confident that with his expertise and dedication, we are well-positioned for another exciting chapter of growth and accomplishment.” Mr. Andrew Fan, Hesai’s CFO, added, “Our strong third quarter financial performance was highlighted by robust operational execution across all key metrics. Quarterly shipment volume reached 134,208 units, marking our second consecutive quarter of nearly 50% sequential growth and propelling net revenues to RMB539.4 million (US$76.9 million), surpassing the upper range of our guidance. We maintained a robust blended gross margin of 47.7%, driven by effective cost management and our flywheel approach to cost and scale optimization. The margin was further bolstered by NRE revenues from our L4 lidar, which is being prepared for potential large-scale deployment by a leading global robotaxi player in the coming years. Our strong commitment to operational efficiency and financial discipline has also enabled us to consistently reduce our GAAP net loss for four consecutive quarters. Looking ahead, we’re expecting a record-breaking fourth quarter, with lidar shipments projected to reach 200,000 units—an astounding volume nearly matching our total shipments in 2023. Based on our current estimates, fourth quarter net revenues are expected to soar to nearly US$100 million, delivering an estimated net profit of US$20 million and a positive operating cash flow. Additionally, we anticipate achieving full-year profitability on a non-GAAP basis for 2024, positioning us to become the first automotive lidar company worldwide to achieve this remarkable milestone. This anticipated explosive growth underscores our robust momentum as we drive toward a landmark fiscal year finish!” Financial Highlights for the Third Quarter of 2024 (in RMB millions, except for per ordinary share data and percentage) Business Outlook For the fourth quarter of 2024, the Company expects net revenues to approach US$100 million (RMB702 million). The above outlook is based on the current market conditions and reflects the Company’s preliminary estimates of market and operating conditions and customer demand, which are all subject to change. Trump team signs deal to end transition 'standoff' with the Biden White House... with a few catches By NIKKI SCHWAB, CHIEF CAMPAIGN CORRESPONDENT FOR DAILYMAIL.COM IN WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA Published: 22:56 GMT, 26 November 2024 | Updated: 23:08 GMT, 26 November 2024 e-mail View comments Incoming White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles announced Tuesday that the Trump team had signed a 'Memorandum of Understanding' with President Joe Biden 's White House to get the presidential transition rolling after a three-week delay. The announcement ends the stand-off between the outgoing and incoming administrations, but Trump's team indicated they will not be handling the transition in the traditional fashion. They will not sign a separate MOU with the General Services Administration, which has office space and secure IT support at the ready. They vowed to abide by their own pre-existing 'Ethics Pledge' and will continue to use private funding for the transition efforts - but said they would disclose the names of donors to the American public - claiming 'we will not require additional government and bureaucratic oversight.' 'The Transition will not utilize taxpayer funding for costs related to the transition, which is consistent with President Trump's commitment to save taxpayers' hard-earned money,' the announcement said. The White House confirmed to DailyMail.com that the MOU had been signed, but expressed reservations. 'While we do not agree with the Trump transition team's decision to forgo signing the GSA MOU, we will follow the purpose of the Presidential Transition Act which clearly states that "any disruption occasioned by the transfer of the executive power could produce results detrimental to the safety and wellbeing of the United States and its people,"' said White House spokesperson Saloni Sharma. She added that the Biden White House felt they had little choice but to go along with the wishes of the incoming president's team. President-elect Donald Trump (left) shakes hands with President Joe Biden (right) during their Oval Office meeting on November 13. The transition had been held up because Trump's team refused to sign three MOUs with the federal government 'The fact is that on January 20 at 12 p.m., President Trump and his team will be in seat,' she said in a statement. 'We have 2 options. Option one is no transition, potentially risking the security of the American people and our country.' 'Option two is conduct a smooth transition with safeguards in the White House MOU to protect non-public information and prevent conflicts of interest,' she continued. 'Option two is the responsible course and in the best interest of the American people,' she added. Trump's team was supposed to sign three agreements to kick off the traditional transition process - one with the White House, one with the GSA and a third with the Department of Justice so that the president-elect's Cabinet picks could get vetted by the FBI, which has historically been needed for Senate confirmation. White House officials said Tuesday that the DOJ MOU 'is not signed but progress has been made towards an agreement.' The DOJ is 'ready to process requests for security clearances for those who will need access briefing materials and national security information once the MOU is signed,' officials said. Trump has long been skeptical of the so-called 'deep state,' and has suggested that his many indictments were proof that Biden's DOJ was after him - so it's not surprising that there was reluctance to sign an agreement with the Justice Department. But one of the crucial findings of the September 11 attack's report was that the drawn-out 2000 election - and delayed transition - contributed to President George W. Bush's team not being prepared for the Islamic terror threat. Incoming Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, pictured on the campaign trail in July, was quoted in the announcement put out by the Trump transition on Tuesday One of the biggest reasons to get the transition moving is to allow Trump's people access to vital national security information so they're prepared on day No. 1. Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren called attention to this issue in a stern letter to the GSA last week, asking the agency to articulate the serious problems that could crop up from team Trump's refusal to sign the agreements. 'President-elect Trump is undermining his administration’s ability to manage urgent national security threats, health and safety threats, and serious conflicts of interest starting on day one of his presidency,' she said. In a follow-up statement provided to DailyMail.com, Warren said Tuesday's announcement 'fails to answer key questions about national security threats and FBI vetting of nominees, and increases concerns about corruption.' 'There appear[s] to be serious gaps between the Trump transition's ethics agreement and the letter of the law,' the Massachusetts Democrat said. 'The reliance on private donors to fund the transition is nothing more than a ploy for well-connected Trump insiders to line their pockets while pretending to save taxpayers money.' White House officials said Tuesday that the MOU would allow incoming Trump officials to access non-public information, but it also provided guardrails. 'In the event it is necessary to share classified information with a transition team member, the relevant government agency must establish that the transition team member has the security clearance necessary to have access to that information, the requisite need to know, and has signed the requisite non-disclosure agreements,' officials said. And when New Orleans' mostly healthy defensive front struggled against a Packers ground game led by running back Josh Jacobs, the rout was on. Nothing "stuck out on film other than a lack of execution and lack of playmaking,” Rizzi said Tuesday after reviewing video of Monday night's 34-0 loss at Green Bay . “We played against a playoff team, at their place, that has very few holes on their team,” Rizzi added. “It was a little bit of a perfect storm." Rizzi, a special teams coordinator who has made no secret that he sees his eight-game interim stint as an opportunity to further his head-coaching ambitions, has two more games left in what has been an up-and-down audition. The Saints are 3-3 on his watch, which includes one of New Orleans' most lopsided losses since the turn of the century. “We’re going to find out a lot about a lot of people.” Of the Saints' four punts, three were inside the Green Bay 20 and New Orleans did not allow a single punt return yard. The punt team might have been the only unit that executed its job (even the kickoff unit allowed a 38-yard return). The Saints had trouble protecting the quarterback (three sacks) and protecting the football (two turnovers). They couldn't run the ball (67 yards). They couldn't stop the run (188 yards allowed). They couldn't pass the ball consistently (129 yards) or stop the pass when they needed to. As former Saints coach Jim Mora once said, they couldn't do “ diddly poo .” Although rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler largely struggled and was responsible for both New Orleans turnovers, he had enough highlights — including a jumping, first-down pass on third-and-long — to keep him penciled in as the starter if the injured Derek Carr remains unable to play, Rizzi said. “It was definitely a performance where we got to take the good with the bad,” Rizzi said. “We've got to get rid of those negative plays.” New Orleans native Foster Moreau has emerged as one of the Saints' most reliable offensive players. The sixth-year NFL tight end made two catches for a team-high 33 yards on Monday night, giving him 25 catches for 335 yards this season. His four TDs receiving entering the game remain tied for the team lead. Rizzi was riding high after two wins to start his interim term as head coach, but Monday night's ugly loss is the club's third in four games and took a lot of luster off his candidacy for a longer-term appointment. Center Erik McCoy left the game with an elbow injury, while guard Lucas Patrick hurt his knee in the closing minutes. Rizzi said McCoy won't need surgery but could miss the rest of the season. 24 — The number of years since the Saints suffered a more lopsided shutout loss, 38-0 against San Francisco in 2002. The Saints' home finale against lowly Las Vegas will be an anticlimactic affair bound to generate a level of fan interest similar to, if not less than, a preseason game. But the game will be important to the current regime, which needs victories in each of the club's final two games to avoid the franchise's worst record since it was displaced by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and went 3-13. The indictment, filed last month after the grand jury made its decision in November 2023, charges Abdul Salam Mahmoud and Jamil Hassan with “cruel and inhuman treatment” and creating an “atmosphere of terror” for people being held at the Mezzeh Military Airport prison in Syria. The country’s president, Bashar Assad, has fled to Russia after insurgent forces took over Damascus following nearly 14 years of civil war. Assad’s flight marks the end of almost 50 years of his family’s rule. Hassan, 72, was director of the Syrian Air Force Intelligence who oversaw detention facilities and prisons, and Mahmoud, 65, supervised operations at the airbase and prison, according to the indictment. The two officials and others supporting Al-Assad’s government arrested people “who the Syrian regime viewed as opponents” and allegedly subjected them to a litany of abuses while they were held at the Mezzeh prison. The indictment alleges that between 2012 and 2019, the two officials were involved with “forcibly removing (detainees’) toenails,” burning them with cigarettes, hot liquids and acid and hanging them by their wrists. Detainees were predominantly Syrian but also included American citizens, people with dual citizenship and foreign nationals, according to the indictment. Prisoners were held in overcrowded, dirty cells without access to food and water or medical treatments, sometimes alongside corpses, and were routinely exposed to the injuries and screams of other victims being abused, interrogated or threatened, the indictment alleges. Hassan, Mahmoud and others are also accused of threatening detainees’ families with imprisonment, sexual assault and death to coerce false confessions from prisoners, and lying to them about their family members being killed or arrested. Arrest warrants have been issued for both men, a news release said. The maximum sentence for a war crime conviction is life in prison.

WASHINGTON – U.S. prosecutors are accusing two senior Syrian officials of overseeing a notorious prison that tortured peaceful protesters and other political prisoners, including a 26-year-old American woman who was later believed to have been executed. The indictment was unsealed Monday, two days after a shock rebel offensive overthrew Syrian President Bashar Assad . The U.S., U.N. and others accuse him of widespread human rights abuses in a 13-year battle to crush opposition forces seeking his removal from power. Recommended Videos The war, which began as a largely nonviolent popular uprising in 2011, has killed half a million people. The indictment, filed Nov. 18 in federal court in Chicago, is believed to be the U.S. government's first against what officials say were networks of Assad intelligence services and military branches and other allied groups that detained, tortured and killed thousands of perceived enemies. It names Jamil Hassan, director of the Syrian air force's intelligence branch, who prosecutors say oversaw a prison and torture center at the Mezzeh air force base in the capital, Damascus, and Abdul Salam Mahmoud, who prosecutors say ran the prison. The indictment charges the two with conspiring to commit cruel and inhuman treatment of civilian detainees during the course of the Syrian civil war. Detainees at the prison were whipped, kicked, electrocuted, burned and subjected to other mental and physical abuse, including being housed in cells alongside corpses of dead detainees, prosecutors allege. Victims included Syrians, Americans and dual citizens, the indictment said. The U.S.-based Syrian Emergency Task Force has long pushed federal prosecutors for action on the cases, including that of 26-year-old American aid worker Layla Shweikani. The group presented witnesses who testified of Shweikani's 2016 torture at the prison. Syrian rights groups believe she was later executed at the Saydnaya military prison in the Damascus suburbs. “Now it is our time to capture these criminals and bring them to the United States for trial,” the Syrian Emergency Task Force said in a statement Monday. The group's leader, Mouaz Moustafa, said his relatives were among those tortured at the prison. Federal prosecutors said they had issued arrest warrants for the two officials, who remain at large. Prospects of bringing them to trial were unclear. Assad's toppling by the rebels over the weekend has scattered his government and left citizens searching prison torture centers around the country for survivors and evidence. The influx of chain hotels into county towns signals a shift in the industry dynamics, with major players recognizing the untapped potential and market demand in these areas. "Look, Taiwan's president is visiting countries in the region that support Taiwan. I don't find anything wrong with that. The United States is part of that. We support Taiwan," he said. Before heading to Guam, Lai already visited Hawaii, Marshall Islands, and Tuvalu, and also has plans to a make a final stopover to Palau. Tuvalu, Marshall Islands, and Palau are three Pacific Island countries that are among 12 other governments that recognise Taiwan diplomatically. "Taiwan's three allies and US stops we are making stopovers share the same universal values with Taiwan which is democracy, freedom, and human rights," Lai said while addressing CNMI and Guam stakeholders during a luncheon at the Grand Hyatt Guam. "We are all partners working together to contribute to the peace and stability of the world. That is why every person I have met during the trip whether it was a handshake or a hug, we encouraged each other I felt deeply connected to them," he said. Lai added visiting the Marianas, as well as Palau, Tuvalu, and the Marshalls, in a way, also reconnects Taiwan to their fellow Austronesian brethren in the Pacific. "This is my first official overseas trip since my inauguration on May 20, we are making a trip to our diplomatic allies. "The three Pacific allies we're visiting and the places we are making stopovers at share the same Austronesian roots with Taiwan, so we are one big family. Everywhere I go during this trip, I feel deeply connected to the local people." CNMI Governor Arnold Palacios, who flew to Guam to attend the luncheon along with members of the CNMI Leguislature, expressed his gratitude that he was invited to join the historic occasion. "It is indeed an honor for us to join Governor Lou Guerrero in honoring President Lai to the Mariana Islands. We share a distinct identity with the people of Guam with the only difference being politically," he said. "But we are all Americans. We share a distinct common value with Taiwan. That is democracy, friendship, cultural similarities, changes and we look forward to an enduring relationship despite the geopolitical environment we now live in. We continue to support Taiwan in making sure that our democracy across the region continues and endures." Leon Guerrero said the theme of Lai's Pacific trip, "Smart and Sustainable Developments for a Prosperous Austronesian Region," is one that deeply aligns with the goals and vision of her own people." Reform UK has secured victory in two council by-elections as leader Nigel Farage boasts "something is happening here." The results come as a blow to the Conservatives in the Kent area as Reform continues to threaten them from the right. Labour will also be concerned that this is indicative of a broader disenfranchisement with the current Government. Reform secured the victories on Kent County Council and Dartford Borough Council. In Swanscombe and Greenhithe, Kent, Reform won 29% of the vote, up from just 1.6% last time out. Labour was second with 24.6% of the vote while the Tories languished in fourth with 15.6%. The two seats were previously held by the independent Swanscombe and Greenhithe Residents’ Association (SGRA). Thomas Mallon was the Reform UK candidate who will now take a seat on the council. Swanscombe & Greenhithe (Kent) Council By-Election Result: ➡️ RFM: 29.1% (+27.5) ?????? LAB: 24.6% (-7.5) ??????️ SGRA: 16.5% (-23.9) ?????? CON: 15.6% (-10.3) ?????? GRN: 12.4% (New) ?????? LDM: 1.8% (New) Reform GAIN from SGRA. Changes w/ 2021. On the Dartford Borough Council - in the Greenhithe & Knockhall ward - Reform came first with 31% of the vote. They were followed by the SGRA (27%). Labour and the Tories were both beaten to third place by the Greens. Reform's candidate here was Michael David Brown. Reacting to the results, Mr Farage said: “Obviously I am very pleased with the results from Kent. It is all the more pleasing because we did it from a virtual standing start and it reflects our new, professionalised approach. “Now we are going all out for Kent County Council next May and I will be addressing a dinner in Hythe tonight (Nov 22) to that effect. Something is happening out there.” Tory backbencher Cllr Sarah Hudson added: “This says that Reform UK is going to win a hell of a lot of seats next May at the election. "It might be a by-election but it’s indicative of things. It means the Tories are still not loved and the Labour Party are not loved either. “Reform UK are filling the void of where we should be and the voters are telling us that we can’t be trusted to do any of the things that we said we would do but didn’t.” An Ipsos poll released earlier this week found that Mr Farage holds a better favorability rating that the Prime Minister. Mr Farage was seen favourably by 28% and unfavorably by 48% – a net approval rating of -20 Sir Keir Starmer is liked by 23% and disliked by 52%, the poll found. BERLIN (AP) — Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel recalls Vladimir Putin's “power games” over the years, remembers contrasting meetings with Barack Obama and Donald Trump and says she asked herself whether she could have done more to prevent Brexit, in her memoirs published Tuesday. Merkel, 70, appears to have no significant doubts about the major decisions of her 16 years as German leader, whose major challenges included the global financial crisis, Europe’s debt crisis, the 2015-16 influx of refugees and the COVID-19 pandemic. True to form, her book — titled “Freedom” — offers a matter-of-fact account of her early life in communist East Germany and her later career in politics, laced with moments of dry wit.
