What if elites are the ones who are bitterly divided while most Americans are fairly unified? History rarely lines up perfectly with the calendar (the "sixties" didn't really start until the decade was almost over). But politically, the 21st century neatly began in 2000, when the election ended in a tie and the color coding of electoral maps became enshrined as a kind of permanent tribal color war of "red vs. blue." Elite understanding of politics has been stuck in this framework ever since. Politicians and voters have leaned into this alleged political reality, making it seem all the more real in the process. I loathe the phrase "perception is reality," but in politics it has the reifying power of self-fulfilling prophecy. Like rival noble families in medieval Europe, elites have been vying for power and dominance on the arrogant assumption that their subjects share their concern for who rules rather than what the rulers can deliver. In 2018, the group More in Common published a massive report on the "hidden tribes" of American politics. The wealthiest and whitest groups were "devoted conservatives" (6%) and "progressive activists" (8%). These tribes dominate the media, the parties and higher education, and they dictate the competing narratives of red vs. blue, particularly on cable news and social media. Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of Americans resided in, or were adjacent to, the "exhausted majority." These people, however, "have no narrative," as David Brooks wrote at the time. "They have no coherent philosophic worldview to organize their thinking and compel action." One of the most profound political changes in recent years has been the separation of notions of credentialed expertise from real-world competence. This isn't a new theme in American life, but the pandemic and the lurch toward identity politics amplified distrust of experts in unprecedented ways. Indeed, some progressives are suddenly realizing they invested too much in the authority of experts and too little in the ability of experts to provide what people want from government, such as affordable housing, decent education and low crime. Kirk Herbstreit wanted to cry and moan after the game about how the best teams, NOT the most deserving ones, should have been in. That kind of felt like stumping for the 9-loss posse of the SEC, but I think Miami deserves to be in that conversation as well. A theme amongst the teams getting trucked was an embarrassing lack of offense for much of the blame. That’s where Miami would have succeeded. There’s little doubt this offense will put up points on pretty much anyone. And that alone gives Miami a chance to be competitive against just about anyone. And Miami didn’t get blown out once, providing competitive games each week - oh, unless they were blowing teams out, like Florida, Florida State , and USF. Now he knows the odds, and so do we; extratextually, we know that this version of Squid Game has to up the ante for Gi-hun in order to do it for us in the audience. And it does, with the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) accepting Gi-hun’s challenge to go back in the game, and opting to go in alongside him. In a way this is a repeat of what we saw in season 1, with Gi-hun unknowingly befriending and protecting a member of the game’s establishment. But Lee Byung-hun’s and Lee Jung-jae’s performance brings the dynamic — and the themes of the show — to a new level. This is Squid Game , in radically new form. The Front Man — now disguised as Player 001, and using the name Oh Young-il — approaches him and pours honey into his ear. But all the while, he continues the grander conversation of what the games are driven by. As Young-il, he says Gi-hun’s success is what convinced him to stay, that he trusts his judgment. But after voting to keep the game going once, he votes no every time, verbally and physically supporting Gi-hun’s agenda. It’s never enough, which feels poignant. It’s not that people are inherently good or bad, but they are desperate and trapped. Gi-hun is the one fighting an uphill battle here, and even with the guy running the thing on his side (ostensibly, at least) the game goes on. At a press event earlier this year, Lee Byung-hun told Polygon that the performance was a challenging one, where he was balancing his personas, including the Front Man’s actual backstory as Hwang In-ho, through just his eyes. “So at times, I would have to switch on and off from my eyes having to be that of Young-il and then the next glance, having to be that of In-Ho, and having to switch that immediately on and off with each fleeting moment.” Having his shift be that small is a constant strength of Squid Game season 2. You never lose the character, whether he’s docile as Young-il or sinister and imposing as the Front Man. And it bolsters the show’s grander conversation where a weaker show might fail: we’re able to see the places he laces his lies with the truth of his own life, and how that’s corrupted him so deeply he can’t see Gi-hun’s hope as anything other than naiveté. Beyond Gi-hun’s desperation, the second season explores a variety of people’s reasons for going in the games — the hope to pay off medical treatments, gambling debts, or just provide for an actual future among the capitalistic stakes of the real world. Plus, with our first look behind the scenes at some of the guards’ motivations, Squid Game actually feels like it’s building to something bigger (presumably in a third season that will feel more like part 2 of this season). As their stories all meld and swirl, Squid Game finds a groove, constantly dancing between the despair of their current predicament and the hopelessness of the life that brought them here. For Griffin, the hardest part of using the new drugs wasn’t access. It was finding out that the much-hyped medications didn’t really work for her. “I have been on Wegovy for a year and a half and have only lost 13 pounds,” said Griffin, who watches her diet, drinks plenty of water and exercises regularly. “I’ve done everything right with no success. It’s discouraging.” In clinical trials, most participants taking Wegovy or Mounjaro to treat obesity lost an average of 15% to 22% of their body weight — up to 50 pounds or more in many cases. But roughly 10% to 15% of patients in those trials were “nonresponders” who lost less than 5% of their body weight. Now that millions of people have used the drugs, several obesity experts told The Associated Press that perhaps 20% of patients — as many as 1 in 5 — may not respond well to the medications. The hippocampus plays a crucial role in memory formation, learning and emotional regulation. Hippocampal neuroinflammation occurs in a range of diseases and disorders such as Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis and Depression. People with these diseases often experience common symptoms such as apathy, difficulty with daily activities and changes to food preferences. These symptoms also tend to be more severe in women than in men. "While inflammation in the hippocampus is not solely responsible for behaviour changes, it likely triggers wider brain activity that influences behaviour," said study co-author Dr Laura Bradfield, Director of the Brain and Behaviour Lab at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). "This research suggests that treatments targeting hippocampal neuroinflammation could help reduce cognitive and behavioural symptoms in these diseases and improve brain health, especially in women," she said. They found the toxin only activated neurons in the presence of other types of brain cells such as microglia and astrocytes. To examine behaviour, the researchers injected lipopolysaccharide directly into the hippocampus of mice and observed their activity and food-seeking behaviours. They discovered that neuroinflammation increased movement and activity levels in both sexes but had a more pronounced effect on food-seeking behaviours in females. Lead author Dr Kiruthika Ganesan, who recently completed her PhD at UTS, said the study underscores the importance of considering sex-specific effects when developing treatments for neurological diseases. More women began working outside of the home in the post-World War II era, which provided avenues to financial security and independence outside of marriage. Greater emphasis on postsecondary educational attainment and career development have led young people to wait longer to enter marriage. States began to adopt no-fault divorce laws throughout the 1960s and 1970s that made it easier to end a marriage. Meanwhile, changing social and cultural attitudes have made it more common for couples to cohabitate, combine finances, and raise children prior to getting married—or without getting married at all. These trends have contributed to a decline in the overall number of marriages and to delays in when people get married for the first time. In the U.S., there are currently only 6.5 marriages per 1,000 people each year , compared to 10.9 five decades ago. For those who do choose to get married, the age of first marriage is happening later. As late as the early 1970s, the median age for a first marriage in the U.S. was just 22. By 2018, that figure had increased to 28.8. These shifts have also affected how likely married couples are to stay together. As women entered the workforce in the mid-20th century and feminism and the sexual revolution took hold, rates of divorce rose quickly throughout the 1960s and 1970s. From 1960 to 1980, the divorce rate per 1,000 people in the U.S. more than doubled from 2.2 to 5.2. But the rate began to fall steadily after 1980, and as of 2018, the rate of divorce had dropped to 2.9 per 1,000 people. Divorce rates have declined alongside increasing marriage ages since the 1980s The link between rates of divorce and age at first marriage has been borne out over time, but it also explains geographic differences in rates of divorce. Today, most of the states with the lowest rates of divorce are also those with a higher median age for marriage. States like New Jersey, New York, California, and Massachusetts all stand out for having fewer than 10% of adults divorced and an age at first marriage above 30. The late hit put Lawrence in the fencing position — both fists clenched — and he stayed on the ground for several minutes, while a brawl ensued. Lawrence didn’t require hospitalization for his concussion but it’s unknown when he’ll return. “Thank you to everyone who has reached out/been praying for me,” Lawrence wrote on X. “I’m home and feeling better. Means a lot, thank you all.” Al-Shaair was ejected from the game and faces a fine and potential suspension after his latest unsportsmanlike penalty. After "Gladiator II" and the first part of "Wicked" were released Friday, movie theaters are nearing their truest chance at another "Barbenheimer," a viral phenomenon that in 2023 drove audiences to the multiplexes by the millions, leaving a massive mark in pop culture and at the box office. As for a name for this latest prospective double feature, perhaps presciently, "Gladiator II" star Paul Mescal thought "Glicked" (pronounced glick-id) was the most suitable portmanteau back in July. "'Wickiator' doesn't really roll off the tongue, does it?" he said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the time. "I think the films couldn't be more polar opposite and kind of worked in that context previously, so fingers crossed people come out and see both films on opening weekend." But as seen online, many social media users have commented that we should all stop trying to make #Glicked happen, since it lacks the organic spontaneity that defined #Barbernheimer. But both films had been hyped for over a year before their releases, thanks to marketing that kept much of the secrets of both films but offered fans just enough to keep them excited. Additionally, familiarity and continuations of franchises decades later can work: "Top Gun: Maverick" was the first huge success since Covid-19 kneecapped movie theaters and spoke to viewers beyond those who'd seen the original "Top Gun" back in 1986, Nunan said. But whether audiences will seek out that nostalgia again is harder to predict. 'Barbenheimer' had an air of prestige Another "Barbenheimer" advantage was both films' sublime pairing of director and subject matter. Here was indie staple and Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig helming her biggest film yet about the country's most famous doll - even those less familiar with her work were eager to see whether she could pull off "Barbie." (The consensus was that she did.) "Oppenheimer" director Christopher Nolan also has a distinct style and a dedicated fanbase, which has cemented Nolan as a reliable box office draw, with six of his 12 films making between half a billion to over $1 billion worldwide. The best picture-winning "Oppenheimer" almost cracked a billion. The "artistic audacity" that both "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" promised was thrilling in its own right, Nunan said, and part of what drove the more hardcore film fans to the theater for repeat viewings. And that's the test for a true blockbuster, he said: whether viewers find it worth it to return and pay to see the same film again and again. The critical and commercial track records for the directors behind "Gladiator II" and "Wicked" are less consistent, Nunan said, which could make a difference in the cultural and box-office impact they have. The prolific Ridley Scott of "Gladiator II" has made classics like "Blade Runner," "Alien" and "Thelma and Louise." But his more recent films haven't "moved the needle" like his earlier work, Nunan said. As for Scott's recent oeuvre, last year's "Napoleon" and 2021's "House of Gucci" made decent money but earned middling reviews; 2021's "The Last Duel," though lauded, was declared a "bomb" by trade publications. "Wicked" director Jon M. Chu is perhaps best known for "Crazy Rich Asians," which was a hit with audiences in 2018, though his last film, 2021's adaptation of the musical "In the Heights," was beset by Covid-era box office challenges. 'Glicked' does have star power Directors aside, as with "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" before them, "Gladiator II" and "Wicked" both have star power in spades. The Roman Empire-set epic has a cast full of "internet boyfriends," the men for whom countless fans have pined since their breakout performances: Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn, to name three. Mescal starred in the pandemic-era series "Normal People" and became an Oscar nominee for "Aftersun" at 27, before truly breaking out with last year's acclaimed "All of Us Strangers"; the seasoned Pascal reached new heights of heartthrobbery with HBO's "The Last of Us," and Quinn appeared in the most recent season of "Stranger Things," one of the most-watched Netflix series of all time. Scott's upcoming film also boasts a star so stratospherically charismatic that the New York Times named him the greatest actor of the 21st century: Denzel Washington, who nearly runs away with the trailer (and, it would seem, the movie itself). As for "Wicked," the sprawling musical is anchored by one of the premier pop divas of our time, Ariana Grande, who plays Galinda (yes, Ga-linda), the blonde foil to Oscar-nominated actor Cynthia Erivo's green-skinned Elphaba. Grande hasn't played a major leading role in a film yet, and she's only appeared in cameos and bit parts over the last decade, but the buzz around both of their turns here has grown palpable. It's possible, however, that star power alone doesn't play as large a role as it once did in getting butts in seats, Nunan said. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, who played crucial supporting roles in "Barbenheimer," starred in "The Fall Guy" earlier this spring, which faltered at the box office and was sent to VOD just weeks after it hit theaters. "I don't know, with these blockbuster tentpole films, if the casting is as important as the movie itself," Nunan said. "It's the quality and execution of the film." He cited "Oppenheimer," which featured several major stars in supporting roles, like Blunt, Matt Damon and Robert Downey, Jr. Their inclusion in the cast maybe further lent the film that air of prestige, but he's not sure that any of them were the sole reason people saw the movie. "I don't think any of us went to see (it) because Matt and Emily and Robert were in it, but it helped," he said. There was something alchemical about the "Barbenheimer" moment of last summer that exceeded all predictions about how popular both films would prove. It might have been easy to assume that viewers of one film wouldn't want to see the other since they were so dissimilar, Nunan said, but "audiences proved the studios wrong" and went to see both. "That summer, 'Barbenheimer' was meeting on so many levels of special," he said. Some magic just can't be replicated, though "Gladiator II" and "Wicked" do seem poised to drum up the same must-see prestige as the films that dominated the summer of 2023. Is it a plan in motion or more rhetoric? On the campaign trail, Trump often called for expanding the federal death penalty — including for those who kill police officers, those convicted of drug and human trafficking, and migrants who kill U.S. citizens. “Trump has been fairly consistent in wanting to sort of say that he thinks the death penalty is an important tool and he wants to use it,” said Douglas Berman, an expert on sentencing at Ohio State University’s law school. “But whether practically any of that can happen, either under existing law or other laws, is a heavy lift.” Berman said Trump’s statement at this point seems to be just a response to Biden’s commutation. “I’m inclined to think it’s still in sort of more the rhetoric phase. Just, ‘don’t worry. The new sheriff is coming. I like the death penalty,’” he said. Most Americans have historically supported the death penalty for people convicted of murder, according to decades of annual polling by Gallup, but support has declined over the past few decades. About half of Americans were in favor in an October poll, while roughly 7 in 10 Americans backed capital punishment for murderers in 2007. Death row inmates are mostly sentenced by states Before Biden’s commutation, there were 40 federal death row inmates compared with more than 2,000 who have been sentenced to death by states. “The reality is all of these crimes are typically handled by the states,” Berman said. He could also attempt to take cases from states that have abolished the death penalty. Could rape now be punishable by death? Berman said Trump’s statement, along with some recent actions by states, may present an effort to get the Supreme Court to reconsider a precedent that considers the death penalty disproportionate punishment for rape. “That would literally take decades to unfold. It’s not something that is going to happen overnight,” Berman said. One of the men Trump highlighted on Tuesday was ex-Marine Jorge Avila Torrez, who was sentenced to death for killing a sailor in Virginia and later pleaded guilty to the fatal stabbing of an 8-year-old and a 9-year-old girl in a suburban Chicago park several years before. The other man, Thomas Steven Sanders, was sentenced to death for the kidnapping and slaying of a 12-year-old girl in Louisiana, days after shooting the girl’s mother in a wildlife park in Arizona. Some families of victims expressed anger with Biden’s decision, but the president had faced pressure from advocacy groups urging him to make it more difficult for Trump to increase the use of capital punishment for federal inmates.
