spin ph.99 Homeland Security shares new details of mysterious drone flights over New Jersey A New Jersey lawmaker from part of the state where several mysterious drones have been spotted in recent week says the devices appear to avoid detection by traditional methods. Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia was among state officials who met Wednesday with representatives from the Department of Homeland Security. She says lawmakers were told the drones have dodged detection by helicopters and radio. Fantasia says DHS described the devices as up to 6 feet in diameter and sometimes traveling with their lights off. The Morris County Republican made the comments in a post on X shortly after she and several other state and local lawmakers met with state police and Homeland Security officials. Juan Soto gets free luxury suite and up to 4 premium tickets for home games in $765M Mets deal DALLAS (AP) — Juan Soto gets free use of a luxury suite and up to four premium tickets behind home plate for regular-season and postseason New York Mets home games as part of his record $765 million, 15-year contract. Rape allegation against Jay-Z won’t impact NFL's relationship with music mogul, Goodell says IRVING, Texas (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says a rape allegation against rapper Jay-Z won’t impact the NFL's relationship with the music mogul. Jay-Z's company Roc Nation has produced some of the NFL’s entertainment presentations including the Super Bowl halftime show. A woman who previously sued Sean “Diddy” Combs alleging she was raped at an awards show after-party in 2000 amended the lawsuit Sunday to include an allegation that Jay-Z was also at the party and participated in the sexual assault. Jay-Z says the rape allegation made against him is part of an extortion attempt. The NFL teamed up with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation in 2019 for events and social activism. The league and the entertainment company extended their partnership a few months ago. Ohio politician proposes make flag planting a felony after fight in Michigan rivalry game An Ohio politician has seen enough flag planting. Republican state Rep. Josh Williams said Wednesday on social media he's introducing a bill to make flag planting in sports a felony in the state. His proposal comes after the Nov. 30 fight at the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry football game when the Wolverines beat the Buckeyes 13-10 and then attempted to plant their flag at midfield. A fight ensued and police had to use pepper spray to disperse the players. Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield famously planted a flag in the middle of the field at Ohio State after the Sooners beat the Buckeyes in 2017. Gastineau confronts Favre in documentary for his 'dive' on Strahan's record-breaking sack Former New York Jets star Mark Gastineau confronted Brett Favre last year at a memorabilia show and angrily accused the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback of deliberately going down on a record-breaking sack. The tense exchange is shown in the new ESPN 30 for 30 documentary “The New York Sack Exchange." It chronicles the Jets’ fearsome foursome defensive line of the 1980s that included Gastineau. Gastineau set an NFL record with 22 sacks in 1984, but Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan broke the mark when he sacked Favre in 2002 in a game between the Giants and Packers. Many have accused Favre of purposely taking the sack so Strahan could set the single-season record with 22 1/2. What happens next with Alex Jones' Infowars? No certainty yet after sale to The Onion is rejected Lawyers in the Alex Jones bankruptcy case are now in discussions on what could happen next after a federal judge in Texas rejected the auction sale of Jones’ Infowars to The Onion satirical news outlet. The next steps remained unclear Wednesday as the judge ordered the trustee who oversaw the auction to come up with a new plan. Judge Christopher Lopez in Houston rejected the bid late Tuesday, saying there was too much confusion about The Onion’s bid. The bankruptcy case was in the wake of the nearly $1.5 billion that courts have ordered Jones to pay for calling the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut a hoax. Sandy Hook families had backed The Onion’s bid. NFL and Nike extend their partnership with a 10-year deal, will focus on growing the sport globally IRVING, Texas (AP) — The NFL’s desire to become a global powerhouse is no secret. Nike, the world’s largest supplier of athletic shoes and apparel, has been the NFL’s exclusive provider of uniforms and sideline, practice and base layer apparel for all 32 NFL teams for 12 years. George Kresge Jr., who wowed talk show audiences as the The Amazing Kreskin, dies at age 89 NEW YORK (AP) — George Joseph Kresge Jr., otherwise known to TV watchers as the mesmerizing entertainer and mentalist The Amazing Kreskin, has died at age 89. Kreskin’s friend and former road manager, Ryan Galway, says he died Tuesday at his home in Caldwell, New Jersey. Kreskin launched his television career in the 1960s and remained popular for decades, appearing with everyone from Merv Griffin to Johnny Carson to Jimmy Fallon. Fans would welcome, if not entirely figure out, his favorite mind tricks — whether correctly guessing a playing card chosen at random, or, most famously, divining where his paycheck had been planted among the audience. He also hosted a show in the 1970s, gave live performances and wrote numerous books. Albertsons sues Kroger for failing to win approval of their proposed supermarket merger Kroger and Albertsons’ plan for the largest U.S. supermarket merger in history has crumbled. The two companies have accused each other of not doing enough to push their proposed alliance through, and Albertsons pulled out of the $24.6 billion deal on Wednesday. The bitter breakup came the day after a federal judge in Oregon and a state judge in Washington issued injunctions to block the merger, saying that combining the two grocery chains could reduce competition and harm consumers. Albertsons is now suing Kroger, seeking a $600 million termination fee, as well as billions of dollars in legal fees and lost shareholder value. Kroger says the legal claims are “baseless.” Keynote Selena Gomez spotlights prioritizing mental health during Academy Women's Luncheon LOS ANGELES (AP) — While surveying a room packed with Hollywood’s most influential figures, “Emilia Pérez” star Selena Gomez took center stage at the Academy Women’s Luncheon to spotlight a critical issue: Prioritizing mental health and supporting underserved communities often left behind in the conversation. (SimpleImages | Getty Images) SimpleImages | Getty Images Kevin Tampone | ktampone@syracuse.com The statewide minimum wage in New York is scheduled to rise. An increase to the wage of 50 cents an hour is set to take effect on Jan. 1, according to the state Labor Department . The increase will bring the minimum wage to $16.50 an hour in New York City, Westchester County and on Long Island. In the rest of the state, including Upstate New York, the new minimum wage will be $15.50 an hour. For the New York City area, the raise is an increase of about 3.1% and in the rest of the state, it’s a jump of about 3.3%. The increase means an extra $20 a week for a minimum wage earner working a full-time job at 40 hours per week. In Upstate New York, that would translate into pay of $620 a week. New York’s minimum wage is scheduled for another increase in 2026. That raise will also be for 50 cents an hour. After that, the minimum wage will increase by a three-year moving average of the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers in the Northeast region. The increases in 2025 and 2026 and the planned indexing of the wage to inflation are the result of policy changes passed previously as part of the state budget process. The legislation included provisions that allow the wage to be frozen if the state’s economy weakens, so the raises aren’t guaranteed. The minimum wage in New York has increased substantially in the last 10 years. A decade ago it was $7.25 an hour. Once the latest set of increases are in place, the wage will have increased over 120% from that level in Upstate New York. Vance takes on a more visible transition role, working to boost Trump’s most contentious picksDeliberations are underway in Atlanta after a year of testimony in the gang and racketeering trial that originally included the rapper Young Thug . Jurors are considering whether to convict Shannon Stillwell and Deamonte Kendrick, who raps as Yak Gotti, on gang, murder, drug and gun charges. The original indictment charged 28 people with conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Opening statements in the trial for six of those defendants happened a year ago. Four of them, including Young Thug, pleaded guilty last month. The rapper was freed on probation. Stillwell and Kendrick rejected plea deals after more than a week of negotiations, and their lawyers chose not to present evidence or witnesses. Both seemed to be in good spirits Tuesday morning after closings wrapped the previous night. Kendrick was chatting and laughing with Stillwell and his lawyers before the jury arrived for instructions. Kendrick and Stillwell were charged in the 2015 killing of Donovan Thomas Jr., also known as “Big Nut,” in an Atlanta barbershop. Prosecutors painted Stillwell and Kendrick as members of a violent street called Young Slime Life, or YSL, co-founded in 2012 by Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams. During closings on Monday, they pointed to tattoos, song lyrics and social media posts they said proved members, including Stillwell, admitted to killing people in rival gangs. Prosecutors say Thomas was in a rival gang. Stillwell was also charged in the 2022 killing of Shymel Drinks, which prosecutors said was in retaliation for the killing of two YSL associates days earlier. Defense attorneys Doug Weinstein and Max Schardt said the state presented unreliable witnesses, weak evidence and cherry-picked lyrics and social media posts to push a false narrative about Stillwell, Kendrick and the members of YSL. Schardt, Stillwell's attorney, reminded the jury that alleged YSL affiliates said during the trial that they had lied to police. Law enforcement played a “sick game” by promising they would escape long prison sentences if they said what police wanted them to say, Schardt said. He theorized that one of those witnesses could have killed Thomas. The truth is that their clients were just trying to escape poverty through music, Schardt said. “As a whole, we know the struggles that these communities have had,” Schardt said. “A sad, tacit acceptance that it’s either rap, prison or death.” Young Thug’s record label is also known as YSL, an acronym of Young Stoner Life. Kendrick was featured on two popular songs from the label’s compilation album Slime Language 2, “Take It to Trial" and “Slatty," which prosecutors presented as evidence in the trial. Weinstein, Kendrick’s defense attorney, said during closings it was wrong for prosecutors to target the defendants for their music and lyrics. Prosecutor Simone Hylton disagreed, and said surveillance footage and phone evidence supported her case. “They have the audacity to think they can just brag about killing somebody and nobody’s gonna hold them accountable,” Hylton said. The trial had more than its fair share of delays. Jury selection took nearly 10 months, and Stillwell was stabbed last year at the Fulton County jail, which paused trial proceedings. Judge Paige Reese Whitaker took over after Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville was removed from the case in July because he had a meeting with prosecutors and a state witness without defense attorneys present. Whitaker often lost patience with prosecutors over moves such as not sharing evidence with defense attorneys, once accusing them of “poor lawyering.” But the trial sped up under her watch. In October, four defendants, including Young Thug, pleaded guilty, with the rapper entering a non-negotiated or “blind” plea, meaning he didn't have a deal worked out with prosecutors. Nine people charged in the indictment, including rapper Gunna, accepted plea deals before the trial began. Charges against 12 others are pending. Prosecutors dropped charges against one defendant after he was convicted of murder in an unrelated case. ___ Kramon is a corps member for The Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative. Farrukh Dhondy | Chump returns! Democracy sets off nightmares across the globeAfter losing 7-2 to the worst team in the Pacific Division on Monday, the Kings will pivot straight into Wednesday’s showdown with the NHL’s best club. The Winnipeg Jets just moved to 18-4-0 with a resounding 4-1 win over another early-season powerhouse, the Minnesota Wild. Now, Winnipeg’s trip south will signify a visit from some former Kings cohorts: Gabriel Vilardi, Alex Iafallo and Rasmus Kupari, all of whom became Jets as a result of the disastrous Pierre-Luc Dubois trade . Vilardi has continued to be one of the top net-front presences in the NHL on the power play as well as a threat from the slot offensively, while providing outstanding defense and winning 63.6% of his faceoffs this season. Iafallo has emerged as a solid second-unit contributor for Winnipeg and scored two goals against Minnesota, including one with the extra man that was his 100th career tally, while Kupari recorded an assist. They’ve operated behind the team’s top-five scorers – Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Nikolaj Ehlers, Josh Morrissey and Neal Pionk – who have combined for 115 points in 22 games. During last season’s only meeting in Los Angeles, Vilardi scored a career-high four points to match the contributions of then-linemate Ehlers as the Jets turned a two-goal deficit into a comfortable win by way of five unanswered goals. That was part of a stretch of 34 straight games in which Winnipeg and its top goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, allowed three goals or fewer. This season, more feats have followed as the Jets have compiled the NHL’s best points total, points percentage, goal differential, power-play conversion rate, goals-against average and save percentage, all while scoring the most goals of any team. They’ve had two winning streaks of seven or more games in just 22 matches. While the Jets soared, the Kings remained in a holding pattern. They appeared to have four winnable games heading into this clash with the league’s top team, but continued their one-step-forward-one-step-back pattern by splitting bouts with Buffalo , Detroit , Seattle and San Jose. They’ve won consecutive games three times this season, but never more than two in a row. Their latest disappointment saw them fall to 0-2-0 in San Jose in 2024-25, losing to the lottery-bound Sharks on Monday in a game that was tied at the second intermission. No. 1 overall pick Macklin Celebrini got the third-period party started with a goal for San Jose and later drew a penalty before scoring a second goal, five-on-three. Kings coach Jim Hiller said that no one should “disrespect” San Jose – which had dropped six of seven decisions entering the contest – but finally deemed an effort, in this case a five-goals-allowed final frame, to be “unacceptable.” “That’s not a team that’s trying to tank, that’s a good hockey team, strong players, real good back end. We played them three times, they beat us twice, we barely beat them in the one at home,” Hiller said. “We completely fell apart in the third period. That’s just unacceptable, what happened in the third.” Anže Kopitar’s hand stayed hot with a goal and an assist to match the two points of linemate Adrian Kempe. Kempe has notched 13 points over his past 12 games while Kopitar has 16 points across those same dozen contests, putting the 37-year-old on track to top his best single-season total of 92 points from the 2017-18 season. Greg Gumbel, a longtime CBS sportscaster who broke barriers during his career calling some of the biggest sporting events, has died from cancer, according to a statement from family released by the news network on Friday. “He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten,” his wife Marcy Gumbel and daughter Michelle Gumbel said in a statement. In March, Gumbel missed his first NCAA Tournament since 1997 due to what he said at the time were family health issues. Gumbel was the studio host for CBS since returning to the network from NBC in 1998. Gumbel signed an extension with CBS last year that allowed him to continue hosting college basketball while stepping back from NFL announcing duties. In 2001, he announced Super Bowl 35 for CBS, becoming the first Black announcer in the U.S. to call play-by-play of a major sports championship. David Berson, president and CEO of CBS Sports, described Gumbel as someone who broke barriers and set standards for others during his years as a voice for fans in sports, including in the NFL and March Madness. “A tremendous broadcaster and gifted storyteller, Greg led one of the most remarkable and groundbreaking sports broadcasting careers of all time,” Berson said. Gumbel had two stints at CBS, leaving the network for NBC when it lost football in 1994 and returning when it regained the contract in 1998. He hosted CBS’ coverage of the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics and called Major League Baseball games during its four-year run broadcasting the national pastime. In 1995, he hosted the World Figure Skating Championships and the following year hosted NBC’s daytime coverage of the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta. But it was football and basketball where he was best known and made his biggest impact. Gumbel hosted CBS’ NFL studio show, “The NFL Today” from 1990 to 1993 and again in 2004-05. Earlier this year, Gumbel recalled replacing Brent Musburger as host of “The NFL Today” in 1990, describing it as intimidating and daunting. “The fact that I got to sit in the same chair and do the same thing or try to do the same thing that he did was an incredible honor,” he said. Gumbel also called NFL games as the network’s lead play-by-play announcer from 1998 to 2003, including Super Bowl 35 and 38. He returned to the NFL booth in 2005, leaving that role after the 2022 season. “Like all who knew and loved him, I too am saddened by his death, yet also so very grateful to have known him in my life,” Clark Kellogg, a CBS Sports college basketball game and studio analyst, said in a statement. “What a gift to be touched by such a good man and partner.” Gumbel was the older brother of Bryant Gumbel, the host of NBC’s “Today” show and “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” on HBO. Bryant Gumbel received a lifetime achievement award at the Sports Emmys in 2003. Greg Gumbel grew up in Chicago and graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1967 with a degree in English. He had plans to become an English teacher, but after his brother got into sportscasting, he auditioned at WMAQ-TV, an NBC affiliate in Chicago in 1973, according to the book “You Are Looking Live!: How The NFL Today Revolutionized Sports Broadcasting.” He was soon offered a position as weekend sports anchor. “I’m kind of surprised I got the job. I certainly wasn’t anyone who was polished,” he said in the book. “By my own reckoning, it took me a good year to start to feel comfortable in front of a camera.” Gumbel also worked for ESPN and the Madison Square Garden network. James Brown, who currently hosts “The NFL Today,” described Gumbel on Friday as “Mr. Versatility and also very telegenic.” “It was my pleasure to call him a friend and one who could do anything that was given to him in the wake of an assignment,” he added. Gumbel won local Emmy Awards during his long career and was the recipient of the 2007 Pat Summerall Award for excellence in sports broadcasting. Outside of his career as a sportscaster, he was affiliated with the March of Dimes for three decades, including as a member of its board of trustees. He also was a member of the Sports Council for St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital for 16 years. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Caroline Dwane Stanley announces resignation from Sinn Fein

ATLANTA — The U.S. government’s premier research body has made an important discovery that could help create new drugs to lower “bad” cholesterol, and hopefully prevent heart attacks and stroke. But the interesting part of that story isn’t just the discovery itself, but the technology responsible for it: a relatively new type of microscope that essentially froze LDL cholesterol molecules, allowing researchers for the first time to get a detailed view of the structure of LDL and find new ways to approach stopping LDL buildup into body. The technology, cryo-electron microscopy, allowed National Institutes of Health scientists to view how LDL accumulates in the blood. The microscope’s inventors won the Nobel Prize in 2017, and the tech promises breakthroughs of all kinds in science. Research with this tool is going to have serious health benefits, the NIH said, because it allowed them for the first time to see how “bad” cholesterol, known as low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol or LDL-C, builds up in the body, and causes heart attacks and strokes in people who have genetically high LDL cholesterol. That condition is known as familial hypercholesterolemia. The genetic disorder causes LDL (bad) cholesterol levels to spike and remain elevated. The condition begins at birth and can cause heart attacks at an early age, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. The researchers hope the breakthrough will help scientists cure FH, which affects 1 in 250 Americans, and increases their likelihood of dying from coronary artery disease at a younger age. Presently, most people who have FH treat it by taking statins or other drugs. But until the NIH discovery in December, which allowed them to take a sort of freeze-frame photo of the molecule, the actual way in which LDL accumulated in the body wasn’t completely understood. The findings provide new insights that one day can lead to new types of drugs, said Dr. Alan Remaley , senior investigator in lipoprotein metabolism at the NIH. “Our findings provide a potential new strategy for increasing the ability of the LDL receptor for binding and removing LDL from the circulation,” Remaley explained. Dr. Aditi Das and Dr. MG Finn, both with Georgia Tech’s School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, explained in an email that the technology represents a revolution in biology and biochemistry because it allows scientists to determine the structures of biological molecules in great detail. How molecules function is determined by their structures. “When we know their structures, we have a big clue as to how they work, how to fix them if they are defective, or how to stop them if they cause harm. Nature is the supreme molecular architect, and we need techniques like cryo-EM to see the details of what she builds,” Finn explained. Why LDL is bad The breakthrough came when the NIH was able to preserve the LDL’s structure, creating a sort of freeze-frame that literally trapped LDL in a form of ice that allowed it to be seen by an electron microscope. The images were sent to a computer algorithm that then built a 3D model of the molecule. Cryo-electron machines cost between $2 million and $3 million per device, and have become essential tools for modern biological and biomedical research, Finn said. Atlanta has two of them: one at Georgia Tech , the other at Emory . The fact that LDL cholesterol contributes to cardiovascular disease has been known for some time, but until the NIH finding, researchers couldn’t quite observe the process. LDL causes fatty deposits, known as plaque, to build up in the walls of arteries, which is a major cause of heart disease. LDL’s purpose isn’t entirely harmful: it’s job is to transport cholesterol to cells for energy, repair or hormone production. But excess LDL is harmful, and the liver produces too much LDL when we eat unhealthy fats (like saturated and trans fats), which contributes to cardiovascular risk. Excess LDL in the bloodstream can get stuck in the arteries, triggering inflammation and narrowing the blood vessels. Over time, this plaque buildup can reduce blood flow or rupture, forming clots that block blood supply to the heart or brain, leading to heart attacks or strokes. Saturated fats are found naturally in animal products (like butter, cheese, fatty meats) and some tropical oils (like coconut and palm oils). Overeating foods high in saturated fat can raise LDL cholesterol. Trans fats are found in margarine, shortening, baked goods and fried foods. They raise LDL cholesterol significantly while lowering HDL (good) cholesterol, making them much more harmful, according to the American Heart Association. For heart health, it’s best to replace these fats with unsaturated options like those found in fish, nuts, seeds, avocados and plant-based oils, said Dr. Danny J. Eapen, of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital and Emory University School of Medicine. Olive oil can also help lower cholesterol, especially when it replaces harmful fats such as butter and margarine, Eapen said. ©2024 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Visit at ajc.com . Following the Cavs’ 126-114 win over the Denver Nuggets, Cleveland moved to an NBA-best 20-3 on the season, recording another dominant win for the Cavs against a playoff contender. The storyline of the night was the three-point line. Cleveland outscored Denver 66-18 from behind the arc while shooting 45.8% on the night. Donovan Mitchell and Caris LeVert paced the Cavs with 11 made threes combined, but it was Evan Mobley ‘s stellar shooting night that is a recipe for success in Cleveland. Cavs Star Evan Mobley Finding Rhythm From Three Career Progression Towards the back end of last season, Mobley had begun to make the three a part of his game. He shot 37.3% on three-pointers on 1.2 attempts per game, way above his previous career-high of 25%. With the addition of new head coach Kenny Atkinson and his fast-paced offense, it was only natural that Mobley would shoot the ball more. So far this season, the Cavs 7-footer is shooting 34.8% from three on an increased 2.1 attempts per game. Mobley is coming off a career-high night from behind the arc, where he shot 3/5, tying his record for makes and setting a new record for attempts. After the game, Atkinson spoke on the importance of Mobley’s shooting, particularly his attempts, more than his makes. “I told him in the locker room, I like the bad one you took,” Atkinson said in a press conference postgame. “I’m joking but he needs to get over that hump, he’s starting to get over that hump where we need his gravity. I think when the playoffs come against these... elite, elite rim protectors and they just stay back in the paint, you got to keep them honest. I’m just really happy that he was more aggressive with the three.” As Mobley progresses with his three-point shot he will become part of the opposition scouting report. It is not extremely important for Mobley to become an elite shooter, but rather have the threat of shooting. Of the Cavs 10 main rotation players, Mobley is ninth in three-point attempts per game ahead of only Jarrett Allen, who takes none. Mobley will likely never become a high-volume three-point guy, but he’s showcased the ability to get hot and force closeouts. The more he does that, the more he will be able to create off the dribble either getting into the paint or creating as a playmaker. Season Progression As the season goes on expect Mobley to take more threes. He’s taken at least two a game in his last nine games, closing in on his career-best mark of 10 in a row in early 2024. While shooting at a higher rate and being more involved in the Cavs offense, with a career-high usage rate of 22.8%, Mobley is still an elite defender. Mobley leads the Cavs in blocks per game and is third on the team in steals. Shooting more threes and higher offensive production was gradually the next step in his career as someone who has always been a top-tier defender. With the way he is playing 23 games into this season, the future is bright for the 23-year-old . This article first appeared on Last Word On Sports and was syndicated with permission.
