Bharatharaj Moruejsan, a 35-year-old software engineer, decided to check out Walmart's offers because he was jet-lagged after returning from a monthlong family vacation to India. He scored an iPad for his 1-year-old daughter for $250, 32% off its original $370 price tag. "That's a good deal," Moruejsan said. After visiting stores and shopping centers on Long Island, Marshal Cohen, chief retail adviser at market research firm Circana, said that apart from people lining up for Target's Taylor Swift merchandise, the number of shoppers appeared typical. "The spreading out of the holidays has created the lack of need and lack of urgency," said Cohen, who had a 20-person team monitoring crowds nationwide. "This is going to be a long, slow, tedious process" of getting shoppers to buy, he said. Michael Brown, a partner at management consulting firm Kearney, saw no lines at the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey, 10 minutes before the 7 a.m. opening. People are also reading... "It's not the old Black Friday that we used to know," he said. Retailers that offered at least 40% off drove shoppers' attention, according to Brown. For example, Forever 21 had 50% to 70% discounts and had lines to the stores, while H&M, which offered 30% discounts, was relatively quiet. Enough consumers still enjoy holiday shopping in person that Black Friday nonetheless was expected to retain its crown remains the biggest day of the year for retail foot traffic in the U.S., according to retail technology company Sensormatic Solutions. At Macy's Herald Square in Manhattan, the setting for the 1947 Christmas movie "Miracle on 34th Street," a steady stream of shoppers early Friday found some shoes and handbags priced half-off, special occasion dresses marked down by 30%, and 60% off the store's luxury bedding brand. Keressa Clark, 50, and her daughter Morghan, 27, who were visiting New York from Wilmington, North Carolina, arrived at 6:15 a.m. "I am actually shocked to see so many Black Friday deals because so many things are online," Morghan Clark said. Karessa Clark, who works as a nurse practitioner, said President-elect Donald Trump's pending return to the White House made her feel better about the economy. She plans to spend $2,000 this holiday season, about $500 more than a year ago. Julie Rambo, a retired school teacher, shoved aside her worries about the incoming Trump administration as she shopped with her grandchildren at the Target in Southfield, Michigan. Rambo, 74, said she was "totally, completely scared of tariffs because I'm still going to need an automobile," but it was a problem to confront later. As she does each year, she was primarily looking for Christmas gifts through a prison ministry for children with parents who are incarcerated. "As we're shopping, we find things for ourselves too," Rambo said. Online sales figures from Thanksgiving Day gave retailers a reason to remain hopeful for a lucrative end to the year. Vivek Pandya, the lead analyst at Adobe Digital Insights, said consumers spent a record $6.1 billion online Thursday, 8.8% more than on Thanksgiving last year. Bigger-than-expected discounts helped spur spending on electronics, apparel and other categories, Pandya said. Across the board, Black Friday weekend discounts should peak at 30% on Cyber Monday and then retreat to around 15%, according to Adobe's research. Analysts forecast a solid holiday shopping season overall in the U.S., though perhaps not as robust as last year. Retailers were even more under the gun to get shoppers in to buy early and in bulk since there are five fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. We’ve already seen the first snow of the year, which felt rather early compared to winters gone by. And as someone who is particularly nesh when it comes to dipping temperatures, I’ve been looking at ways to keep warm without compromising on style or feeling like the Michelin Man in a million layers. I popped into Uniqlo a few weeks ago to try on some of their new-in styles , and spotted their range of Heattech in store. And while it wasn’t necessarily chilly at the time, present me is very much thanking past me for picking up a pair of the Ultra Warm Leggings ahead of the frosty nights. Heattech is Uniqlo’s innovative fabric technology that traps heat generated by your body to keep you warm. The Ultra Warm version of these leggings takes this up a notch, being 2.25 times warmer than the standard range, according to CLO values. READ MORE: Best beauty advent calendars for 2024 that are available to buy now from Boots, Liz Earle and more READ MORE: I worked at Boots and these are the best early Black Friday deals to shop now for Christmas Usually £24.90, the leggings are currently reduced to £19.90 for Black Friday , saving £5 on the RRP. They come in sizes XXS to XXL and are made from stretchy fabric for a snug yet comfortable fit. For reference, I’m a size 10 and ordered a size M - though I could have potentially opted for the S as they were surprisingly generous. I wore these leggings to a Christmas light trail paired with a leather skirt, red jumper, boots, and duvet coat. The leggings have a fleecy inner lining which is ultra-soft against your skin, and despite the cosy material, they’re not at all bulky, which means you can wear them as a base layer under jeans, or on their own with skirts, dresses, or a long jumper. They’re also pretty high waisted, and the stretch allows you to pull them up quite high to keep you warm from tummy to ankle . During my walk around the festive trail, I was extremely toasty, but their sleek design ensured my outfit looked chic for all of the festive photo opportunities. But they’re not just great for outdoors, because they’re ideal for wearing around the house, too - and could help you save money on your heating bills this winter. Their insulating properties mean you can comfortably turn down the thermostat without sacrificing warmth, which is ideal if you work from home, like me. What’s more is that they’re made to last, with a special knit fabric that ensures they retain their shape even after repeated washes. I’m not the only one who rates these Heattech leggings, either, having earned themselves a 4.5 star rating based on 250 global reviews . One said: “Very satisfied with this product. I’ve been wearing them all winter and haven’t felt cold. The fabric is soft and light, easy to wash. I think I might order more.” Another added: “These leggings fit comfortably like a second skin, keep you super warm and are opaque! Perfect!” While a third said: “Purchased all the colours as I can’t get enough of these! You can wear them on their own or put them under your jeans or trousers. So soft that it feels really good on your skin, too. Perfect way to keep warm during the winter season.” However, some agree with me that they’re quite generously sized, with one commenting: “The feeling is very soft and comfy, however, a bit big in size. I should have bought a size smaller than the recommended one.” Another added: “The AI tool suggested I get a size XL and I bought L. Still too big and baggy (usually UK size 12). Returned and bought M which was perfect. Warm and great for working from home.” Elsewhere, Lovall’s Extreme Fleece Lined Leggings have also been reduced in the Black Friday sale. They come in a wide range of sizes from 6-28, and feature an extra soft, cosy fleece lining to tackle the extreme cold. They were £36, but have been reduced to £32.50 for a limited time. Marks and Spencer also have these Heatgen Maximum Thermal Fleece Leggings for £20. Available in sizes 6-22, they come in four chic shades and have plenty of added stretch that means they move with you for a comfortable fit. Or you can pick up a pair of the Uniqlo Heattech Ultra Warm Leggings here for under £20.Canadian freestyle skier star Mikael Kingsbury is juggling both moguls and fatherhood. The 32-year-old Olympic and world champion from Deux-Montagnes, Que., opens his World Cup season Saturday in Ruka, Finland, with partner Laurence Mongeon and their infant son Henrik in tow. Henrik was born Aug. 25. "It changes your life, that's for sure," Kingsbury said Tuesday from Ruka in a media conference call. "Get used to waking up in the middle of the night, but at the same time, it is the most beautiful thing in the world. "It brings a beautiful balance to my career." While Kingsbury acknowledges there are great hockey players named Henrik, he says the inspiration for the name was his niece liking a boy named Henrik in her kindergarten class. "I always liked the name anyway," Kingsbury said. "Laurence and I agree it fits his face. "I didn't ski as much this summer because I wanted to be home and I wanted to be present. We're five weeks on the road for the start of this season, so I couldn't see myself doing five weeks without seeing my kid. "I would have missed my family too much, so I brought them on the road for three weeks." Regarded as the most dominant moguls skier of all time, the Canadian achieved another significant milestone last season when he surpassed Swedish alpine skier Ingemar Stenmark for the most all-time World Cup victories by a male athlete in any ski discipline. Kingsbury embarks on his 16th World Cup season with a career 90 victories. He's finished in the medals in 129 of 151 career World Cup starts. But while Kingsbury claimed last season's dual moguls crown, Japan's Ikuma Horishima challenged Kingsbury's reign by claiming his first crystal globe in moguls. "The mindset is still the same. The goals are still the same," Kingsbury said. "Coming into the season, I want to focus on one race at a time. That's how you get to a crystal globe. "The main focus is being consistent, staying healthy to start the season, try to get the momentum of the start and stay healthy until the end of this season. "I usually start strong, and I can finish very strong, and that's how you win crystal globes." Kingsbury won an Olympic moguls gold medal in 2018 and silver in both 2014 and 2022. Dual moguls makes its Olympic debut in 2026 in Milan-Cortina, Italy. Kingsbury has swept both moguls and dual moguls gold medals in three straight world championships. He'll attempt the double a fourth time March 18-21 in Engadin, Switzerland. "Henrik and my family now are my priority and skiing comes second, but I know I can still win," Kingsbury said. "It's going to be different. My family is going to be home and it might be a bit more difficult, but at the same time I see a lot of positive in being a dad. I feel way more relaxed on the mountain." One secret to Kingsbury's success has been his durability. His only major injury hiccup so far was fracturing two vertebrae in his back training in Ruka ahead of the 2020-21 season. Kingsbury sat out the first three World Cups and won the fourth upon return to action. He's closer to the end of his career than the beginning, so quality training, not quantity, is important to him. "As I get older, I cannot do too much, but I've got to do the right amount and make sure I can peak in 2026," he explained. "The challenge is going to be the best dad I can and the best skier I can and try to manage in the middle. It's never going to be perfect, but I'm to do as best as I can and make sure I'm ready in 2026. "I feel fortunate for all the team (members) that I have around me, teammates, and all the coaches and staff that are working with me. They're going to make my life easy when it's going to be difficult." This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 26, 2024. Donna Spencer, The Canadian Press

DALLAS (AP) — More than 60 years after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated , conspiracy theories still swirl and any new glimpse into the fateful day of Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas continues to fascinate . President-elect Donald Trump promised during his reelection campaign that he would declassify all of the remaining government records surrounding the assassination if he returned to office. He made a similar pledge during his first term, but ultimately bended to appeals from the CIA and FBI to keep some documents withheld. At this point, only a few thousand of the millions of governmental records related to the assassination have yet to be fully released, and those who have studied the records released so far say that even if the remaining files are declassified, the public shouldn't anticipate any earth-shattering revelations. “Anybody waiting for a smoking gun that’s going to turn this case upside down will be sorely disappointed,” said Gerald Posner, author of “Case Closed,” which concludes that assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Friday's 61st anniversary is expected to be marked with a moment of silence at 12:30 p.m. in Dealey Plaza, where Kennedy's motorcade was passing through when he was fatally shot. And throughout this week there have been events marking the anniversary. When Air Force One carrying Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy touched down in Dallas , they were greeted by a clear sky and enthusiastic crowds. With a reelection campaign on the horizon the next year, they had gone to Texas on political fence-mending trip. But as the motorcade was finishing its parade route downtown, shots rang out from the Texas School Book Depository building. Police arrested 24-year-old Oswald and, two days later, nightclub owner Jack Ruby fatally shot Oswald during a jail transfer. A year after the assassination, the Warren Commission, which President Lyndon B. Johnson established to investigate the assassination, concluded that Oswald acted alone and there was no evidence of a conspiracy. But that hasn't quelled a web of alternative theories over the decades. In the early 1990s, the federal government mandated that all assassination-related documents be housed in a single collection in the National Archives and Records Administration. The collection of over 5 million records was required to be opened by 2017, barring any exemptions designated by the president. Trump, who took office for his first term in 2017, had boasted that he'd allow the release of all of the remaining records but ended up holding some back because of what he called the potential harm to national security. And while files have continued to be released during President Joe Biden's administration, some still remain unseen. The documents released over the last few years offer details on the way intelligence services operated at the time, and include CIA cables and memos discussing visits by Oswald to the Soviet and Cuban embassies during a trip to Mexico City just weeks before the assassination. The former Marine had previously defected to the Soviet Union before returning home to Texas. Mark S. Zaid, a national security attorney in Washington, said what's been released so far has contributed to the understanding of the time period, giving “a great picture” of what was happening during the Cold War and the activities of the CIA. Posner estimates that there are still about 3,000 to 4,000 documents in the collection that haven’t yet been fully released. Of those documents, some are still completely redacted while others just have small redactions, like someone's Social Security number. There are about 500 documents where all the information is redacted, Posner said, and those include Oswald's and Ruby’s tax returns. “If you have been following it, as I have and others have, you sort of are zeroed in on the pages you think might provide some additional information for history,” Posner said. Trump's transition team hasn’t responded to questions this week about his plans when he takes office. From the start, there were those who believed there had to be more to the story than just Oswald acting alone, said Stephen Fagin, curator of the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which tells the story of the assassination from the building where Oswald made his sniper's perch. “People want to make sense of this and they want to find the solution that fits the crime," said Fagin, who said that while there are lingering questions, law enforcement made “a pretty compelling case” against Oswald. Larry J. Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, said his interest in the assassination dates back to the event itself, when he was a child. “It just seemed so fantastical that one very disturbed individual could end up pulling off the crime of the century," Sabato said. “But the more I studied it, the more I realized that is a very possible, maybe even probable in my view, hypothesis.”Trump taps Brooke Rollins as agriculture secretary

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Dejounte Murray plans to return to the New Orleans Pelicans ' lineup on Wednesday night for the first time since fracturing his left hand in a season-opening victory over Chicago on Oct. 23. And when Murray takes the court against the Toronto Raptors , his mother will be on his mind. After practice on Tuesday, Murray discussed his impending return and disclosed more details about the previously unspecified “personal matters” that caused him to leave the team during the final days of the preseason. His mother had a stroke, he said. “It was tough to leave and go deal with that. As she got better, she wanted me to come play,” Murray said of his last-minute decision to start against Chicago. He added that his hand injury near the end of that game was God's way of telling him, “‘Nah, you need to stay with your mom.’” “I was more concerned about my mother. That was my priority,” Murray continued. “I wasn’t really worried about my recovery.” Murray's mother has recovered well, he said, while he is “healthy and ready to help this team.” “I’m ready to hoop. Play for my mother — she’s going to be watching," Murray said. “I’m ready to compete, bring that winning spirit.” The Pelicans (4-14) certainly could use the help, having lost 14 of 16 games since opening the season with a pair of victories. Injuries have ravaged the roster. At times, all five starters have been out. Star power forward Zion Williamson has missed 12 games this season — one with an illness and 11 with a hamstring injury. Herb Jones has been sidelined by a shoulder strain and Brandon Ingram's status is in doubt after he sat out practice on Tuesday with calf soreness that also sidelined him during a loss on Monday night at Indiana. But at least two starters — Murray and fellow guard CJ McCollum — are expected to play against the Raptors. “I don’t care how many games we’ve lost. I just know every time I step on the floor I feel like we can win games,” said Murray, who had 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds in his lone game with the Pelicans. "That’s just my mentality, and I feel like it can carry over to a lot of guys.” AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA
