Chilling confession of killer who stabbed teenage boy at random before turning himself in By ISHITA SRIVASTAVA FOR DAILYMAIL.COM Published: 21:04, 21 November 2024 | Updated: 21:14, 21 November 2024 e-mail 1 View comments A Toronto man has pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing and killing a 16-year-old stranger at a subway station. Jordan O'Brien-Tobin, 22, of Newfoundland admitted to killing Gabriel Magalhaes at a Keele Station in an unprovoked attack at around 8:53 pm on March 25, 2023. The killer had originally been charged with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on November 20. Magalhaes and his friend were sitting on a bench on the ground floor of the subway station when Tobin went down a set of stairs near them, according to a statement of facts read in court. O'Brien-Tobin was wearing a backpack, which he moved to his front before walking down the stairs. Surveillance footage showed O'Brien-Tobin turned and stared at Gabriel as the teenaged boys remained unaware of his presence. O'Brien-Tobin then briefly exited the station but continued to watch the duo through a set of automatic doors. Shortly after, he reached into his backpack and returned back into the station. 'He then walked away, exiting the subway station. Gabriel collapsed on the floor.' As O'Brien-Tobin walked away, the young victim collapsed on the floor and his friend began to attempt first aid until emergency crews arrived. But an hour later, at 9:46 pm, Magalhaes was pronounced dead at a hospital. Autopsy results revealed that a single stab wound to the chest injured his left lung, pericardium and heart - leading to his death. Prosecutors also noted at around 9:37 pm, O'Brien-Tobin spoke to a priest and another member of the parish at a church on Roncesvalles Avenue. Nash said : 'He was acting strange and told them he felt like killing someone. They became concerned and escorted him out of the church approximately 20 minutes later.' O'Brien-Tobin then went to the emergency room at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto about 20 minutes later and confessed to his crimes. Further inspection of his mobile phone also showed the accused was sending messages to his girlfriend, friends and mother before and after the murder. Some of the texts read 'someone's dying TN' , 'I just stabbed someone random' and 'I stabbed someone and got away with it.' After Magalhaes' death, his mother Andrea told CBC : 'We need more social services. We need more investment into physical and mental health. We need more supports for housing. 'I feel like, as things go the way they are going right now, so many people are going to be suffering the horrible pain that I am going through right now.' At the time of the incident. two of Magalhaes' classmates also set up a small memorial for him outside the station. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for February. By pleading pleading guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder, O'Brien-Tobin can be sentenced to life with the possibility of parole. The unidentified teen is alleged to have frantically called her father before dialing 911 after stabbing her little sister more than 10 times just after 1pm on Saturday in Taylor, Michigan . The suspect, who was watching her sibling while their parents were out of the house, allegedly waited in the bathroom for the little girl after their heated argument, and stabbed her multiple times with a hunting and butcher's knife, police said. When authorities arrived at the home they found the unnamed girl with 'over 10 stab wounds ranging from the abdomen, to the head, to the neck,' Taylor Detective Cpl. Zachary Digiacomo said. The younger sibling was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Trump's CBP nominee Rodney Scott is a 29-year border-enforcement veteran who clashed with President Joe Biden's team on how best to tackle illegal immigration and other border-related matters. He was asked to leave his Border Patrol position within the first six months of Biden taking office in 2021. Scott's return signals how seriously Trump is taking his ambitious immigration and border security agenda, which includes launching a mass deportation effort within his first 100 days. As the border patrol chief during Trump's first tenure as president, Scott helped implement the Remain in Mexico Policy , Title 42 and Safe Third Country agreements. The president-elect said he was "thrilled" to bring Scott back to public service. Customs and Border Protection has more than 60,000 federal employees, which makes it one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the country. It carries the responsibility of inspecting roughly 300 ports of entry, such as airports, seaports and land borders. That will be a significant role in Trump's returning administration should he keep his pledge to impose strict tariffs on foreign countries such as Canada, Mexico and China. Trump has unveiled a host of other appointments as part of his immigration crackdown featuring well-known hardliners such as Caleb Vitello, an assistant director for firearms and tactical programs as acting director of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement; Tony Salisbury as deputy homeland security adviser; and Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, to be ambassador to Chile. Heather Gonzalez, vice president of American Families United Vice President, a liberal-leaning immigration reform group , said Friday the nominations, "signal a dangerous commitment to continuing and even escalating" policies that could lead to family separation. "We reject any attempt to further criminalize immigrants, vilify them and break up families for political gain," Gonzalez said. "The nominees' track records suggest they will not work to protect the values of family unity and justice that are foundational to our nation. Instead, their leadership will only deepen the wounds inflicted on communities already living in fear and uncertainty." But South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, who has been plucked to be Trump's head of the Department of Homeland Security, praised Scott and Vitello's selection in a social media post Friday, welcoming both to the team. "Together, we will Make America Safe Again," Noem said in a post on Truth Social. Contributing: Josh Meyer
