He was 100 years old. The longest-lived American president died on Sunday, more than a year after entering hospice care , at his home in the small town of Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died at 96 in November 2023 , spent most of their lives, The Carter Center said. “Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,” the center said in posting about his death on the social media platform X. He also turned a cold shoulder to Washington’s news media and lobbyists, not fully appreciating their influence on his political fortunes. “It didn’t take us long to realize that the underestimation existed, but by that time we were not able to repair the mistake,” Carter told historians in 1982, suggesting that he had “an inherent incompatibility” with Washington insiders. Carter insisted his overall approach was sound and that he achieved his primary objectives — to “protect our nation’s security and interests peacefully” and “enhance human rights here and abroad” — even if he fell spectacularly short of a second term. Ignominious defeat, though, allowed for renewal. The Carters founded The Carter Center in 1982 as a first-of-its-kind base of operations, asserting themselves as international peacemakers and champions of democracy, public health and human rights. “I was not interested in just building a museum or storing my White House records and memorabilia,” Carter wrote in a memoir published after his 90th birthday. “I wanted a place where we could work.” That work included easing nuclear tensions in North and South Korea, helping to avert a U.S. invasion of Haiti and negotiating cease-fires in Bosnia and Sudan. By 2022, The Carter Center had declared at least 113 elections in Latin America, Asia and Africa to be free or fraudulent. Recently, the center began monitoring U.S. elections as well. Carter’s stubborn self-assuredness and even self-righteousness proved effective once he was unencumbered by the Washington order, sometimes to the point of frustrating his successors . He went “where others are not treading,” he said, to places like Ethiopia, Liberia and North Korea, where he secured the release of an American who had wandered across the border in 2010. “I can say what I like. I can meet whom I want. I can take on projects that please me and reject the ones that don’t,” Carter said. He announced an arms-reduction-for-aid deal with North Korea without clearing the details with Bill Clinton’s White House. He openly criticized President George W. Bush for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He also criticized America’s approach to Israel with his 2006 book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.” And he repeatedly countered U.S. administrations by insisting North Korea should be included in international affairs, a position that most aligned Carter with Republican President Donald Trump. Among the center’s many public health initiatives, Carter vowed to eradicate the guinea worm parasite during his lifetime, and nearly achieved it: Cases dropped from millions in the 1980s to nearly a handful. With hardhats and hammers, the Carters also built homes with Habitat for Humanity. The Nobel committee’s 2002 Peace Prize cites his “untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.” Carter should have won it alongside Sadat and Begin in 1978, the chairman added. Carter accepted the recognition saying there was more work to be done. “The world is now, in many ways, a more dangerous place,” he said. “The greater ease of travel and communication has not been matched by equal understanding and mutual respect.” Carter’s globetrotting took him to remote villages where he met little “Jimmy Carters,” so named by admiring parents. But he spent most of his days in the same one-story Plains house — expanded and guarded by Secret Service agents — where they lived before he became governor. He regularly taught Sunday School lessons at Maranatha Baptist Church until his mobility declined and the coronavirus pandemic raged. Those sessions drew visitors from around the world to the small sanctuary where Carter will receive his final send-off after a state funeral at Washington’s National Cathedral. The common assessment that he was a better ex-president than president rankled Carter and his allies. His prolific post-presidency gave him a brand above politics, particularly for Americans too young to witness him in office. But Carter also lived long enough to see biographers and historians reassess his White House years more generously. His record includes the deregulation of key industries, reduction of U.S. dependence on foreign oil, cautious management of the national debt and notable legislation on the environment, education and mental health. He focused on human rights in foreign policy, pressuring dictators to release thousands of political prisoners . He acknowledged America’s historical imperialism, pardoned Vietnam War draft evaders and relinquished control of the Panama Canal. He normalized relations with China. “I am not nominating Jimmy Carter for a place on Mount Rushmore,” Stuart Eizenstat, Carter’s domestic policy director, wrote in a 2018 book. “He was not a great president” but also not the “hapless and weak” caricature voters rejected in 1980, Eizenstat said. Rather, Carter was “good and productive” and “delivered results, many of which were realized only after he left office.” Madeleine Albright, a national security staffer for Carter and Clinton’s secretary of state, wrote in Eizenstat’s forward that Carter was “consequential and successful” and expressed hope that “perceptions will continue to evolve” about his presidency. “Our country was lucky to have him as our leader,” said Albright, who died in 2022. Jonathan Alter, who penned a comprehensive Carter biography published in 2020, said in an interview that Carter should be remembered for “an epic American life” spanning from a humble start in a home with no electricity or indoor plumbing through decades on the world stage across two centuries. “He will likely go down as one of the most misunderstood and underestimated figures in American history,” Alter told The Associated Press. James Earl Carter Jr. was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains and spent his early years in nearby Archery. His family was a minority in the mostly Black community, decades before the civil rights movement played out at the dawn of Carter’s political career. Carter, who campaigned as a moderate on race relations but governed more progressively, talked often of the influence of his Black caregivers and playmates but also noted his advantages: His land-owning father sat atop Archery’s tenant-farming system and owned a main street grocery. His mother, Lillian , would become a staple of his political campaigns. Seeking to broaden his world beyond Plains and its population of fewer than 1,000 — then and now — Carter won an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1946. That same year he married Rosalynn Smith, another Plains native, a decision he considered more important than any he made as head of state. She shared his desire to see the world, sacrificing college to support his Navy career. Carter climbed in rank to lieutenant, but then his father was diagnosed with cancer, so the submarine officer set aside his ambitions of admiralty and moved the family back to Plains. His decision angered Rosalynn, even as she dived into the peanut business alongside her husband. Carter again failed to talk with his wife before his first run for office — he later called it “inconceivable” not to have consulted her on such major life decisions — but this time, she was on board. “My wife is much more political,” Carter told the AP in 2021. He won a state Senate seat in 1962 but wasn’t long for the General Assembly and its back-slapping, deal-cutting ways. He ran for governor in 1966 — losing to arch-segregationist Lester Maddox — and then immediately focused on the next campaign. Carter had spoken out against church segregation as a Baptist deacon and opposed racist “Dixiecrats” as a state senator. Yet as a local school board leader in the 1950s he had not pushed to end school segregation even after the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision, despite his private support for integration. And in 1970, Carter ran for governor again as the more conservative Democrat against Carl Sanders, a wealthy businessman Carter mocked as “Cufflinks Carl.” Sanders never forgave him for anonymous, race-baiting flyers, which Carter disavowed. Ultimately, Carter won his races by attracting both Black voters and culturally conservative whites. Once in office, he was more direct. “I say to you quite frankly that the time for racial discrimination is over,” he declared in his 1971 inaugural address, setting a new standard for Southern governors that landed him on the cover of Time magazine. His statehouse initiatives included environmental protection, boosting rural education and overhauling antiquated executive branch structures. He proclaimed Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the slain civil rights leader’s home state. And he decided, as he received presidential candidates in 1972, that they were no more talented than he was. In 1974, he ran Democrats’ national campaign arm. Then he declared his own candidacy for 1976. An Atlanta newspaper responded with the headline: “Jimmy Who?” The Carters and a “Peanut Brigade” of family members and Georgia supporters camped out in Iowa and New Hampshire, establishing both states as presidential proving grounds. His first Senate endorsement: a young first-termer from Delaware named Joe Biden. Yet it was Carter’s ability to navigate America’s complex racial and rural politics that cemented the nomination. He swept the Deep South that November, the last Democrat to do so, as many white Southerners shifted to Republicans in response to civil rights initiatives. A self-declared “born-again Christian,” Carter drew snickers by referring to Scripture in a Playboy magazine interview, saying he “had looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times.” The remarks gave Ford a new foothold and television comedians pounced — including NBC’s new “Saturday Night Live” show. But voters weary of cynicism in politics found it endearing. Carter chose Minnesota Sen. Walter “Fritz” Mondale as his running mate on a “Grits and Fritz” ticket. In office, he elevated the vice presidency and the first lady’s office. Mondale’s governing partnership was a model for influential successors Al Gore, Dick Cheney and Biden. Rosalynn Carter was one of the most involved presidential spouses in history, welcomed into Cabinet meetings and huddles with lawmakers and top aides. The Carters presided with uncommon informality: He used his nickname “Jimmy” even when taking the oath of office, carried his own luggage and tried to silence the Marine Band’s “Hail to the Chief.” They bought their clothes off the rack. Carter wore a cardigan for a White House address, urging Americans to conserve energy by turning down their thermostats. Amy, the youngest of four children, attended District of Columbia public school. Washington’s social and media elite scorned their style. But the larger concern was that “he hated politics,” according to Eizenstat, leaving him nowhere to turn politically once economic turmoil and foreign policy challenges took their toll. Carter partially deregulated the airline, railroad and trucking industries and established the departments of Education and Energy, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He designated millions of acres of Alaska as national parks or wildlife refuges. He appointed a then-record number of women and nonwhite people to federal posts. He never had a Supreme Court nomination, but he elevated civil rights attorney Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the nation’s second highest court, positioning her for a promotion in 1993. He appointed Paul Volker, the Federal Reserve chairman whose policies would help the economy boom in the 1980s — after Carter left office. He built on Nixon’s opening with China, and though he tolerated autocrats in Asia, pushed Latin America from dictatorships to democracy. But he couldn’t immediately tame inflation or the related energy crisis. And then came Iran. After he admitted the exiled Shah of Iran to the U.S. for medical treatment, the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun in 1979 by followers of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Negotiations to free the hostages broke down repeatedly ahead of the failed rescue attempt. The same year, Carter signed SALT II, the new strategic arms treaty with Leonid Brezhnev of the Soviet Union, only to pull it back, impose trade sanctions and order a U.S. boycott of the Moscow Olympics after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. Hoping to instill optimism, he delivered what the media dubbed his “malaise” speech, although he didn’t use that word. He declared the nation was suffering “a crisis of confidence.” By then, many Americans had lost confidence in the president, not themselves. Carter campaigned sparingly for reelection because of the hostage crisis, instead sending Rosalynn as Sen. Edward M. Kennedy challenged him for the Democratic nomination. Carter famously said he’d “kick his ass,” but was hobbled by Kennedy as Reagan rallied a broad coalition with “make America great again” appeals and asking voters whether they were “better off than you were four years ago.” Reagan further capitalized on Carter’s lecturing tone, eviscerating him in their lone fall debate with the quip: “There you go again.” Carter lost all but six states and Republicans rolled to a new Senate majority. Carter successfully negotiated the hostages’ freedom after the election, but in one final, bitter turn of events, Tehran waited until hours after Carter left office to let them walk free. At 56, Carter returned to Georgia with “no idea what I would do with the rest of my life.” Four decades after launching The Carter Center, he still talked of unfinished business. “I thought when we got into politics we would have resolved everything,” Carter told the AP in 2021. “But it’s turned out to be much more long-lasting and insidious than I had thought it was. I think in general, the world itself is much more divided than in previous years.” Still, he affirmed what he said when he underwent treatment for a cancer diagnosis in his 10th decade of life. “I’m perfectly at ease with whatever comes,” he said in 2015 . “I’ve had a wonderful life. A California man confessed to helping the North Korean regime prepare for an attack in a “sophisticated scheme” to illegally obtain restricted weapons and military grade technology, federal prosecutors announced Tuesday. Shenghua Wen, a Chinese national residing unlawfully in Ontario, California, conspired with North Korean officials to obtain prohibited items before traveling to the US as a student in 2012, the Justice Department alleged in a criminal complaint. Wen, who allegedly overstayed his visa and remained in the U.S. illegally, was arrested Tuesday by the FBI. In addition to weapons and equipment, Wen told investigators the North Korean regime also tasked him with obtaining military uniforms in the US, which “would subsequently be used by the North Korean military to disguise their soldiers to conduct a surprise attack on South Korea,” the complaint states. Thousands of U.S. military personnel are stationed in South Korea to help bolster security and stability in the region. Justice Department officials said the arrest was unrelated to Tuesday’s internal political turmoil amid a declaration of martial law and clashes outside South Korean parliament. Prosecutors allege Wen established an export company in Texas, where firearms and ammunition were procured and transported to the Los Angeles area, then ultimately packed in cargo containers bearing fake inventory manifests for shipment to North Korea as recently as 2023. While executing a search warrant at Wen’s home, authorities seized 50,000 rounds of ammunition, sophisticated chemical detection equipment, and a tool used for detecting listening devices, which Wen allegedly said he intended to also ship to North Korea. The U.S. Congressional Budget Office released its monthly budget review on Monday, which showed that in the first two months of this fiscal year, the federal government has run up a deficit of $622 billion. “That amount is $242 billion more than the deficit recorded during the same period last fiscal year,” CBO said in its report . That figure means the deficit is nearly 40% higher than this time last year. “The most alarming turkey in November was the federal government’s inability to live within its means,” Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said in a statement. “We are only two months into the fiscal year, and we have already borrowed a staggering $622 billion, with $365 billion in the month of November alone." Deficits never surpassed one trillion dollars before the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, they remain well above one trillion and for this next fiscal year are well beyond the pace to surpass $1 trillion. The deficit last fiscal year was about $1.8 trillion. Billionaire Elon Musk, now an advisor to President-elect Donald Trump, lamented the debt, which is about $36 trillion, on X Monday. “If we don’t fix the deficit, everything will suffer, including essential spending like DoD, Medicare & Social Security,” Musk said. “It’s not optional.” CBO did explain that some of the increase is from accounting changes. From CBO: The change in the deficit was influenced by the timing of outlays and revenues alike. Outlays in October 2023 were reduced by shifts in the timing of certain federal payments that otherwise would have been due on October 1, 2023, which fell on a Sunday. This is a problem from motion planning and robotics. Instead of a piano, however, participants are captured maneuvering a T-shaped object through a space divided into three chambers. These are connected by narrow slits. Humans tackled the task by themselves or in groups of up to 26 people, meanwhile the ants worked in groups ranging from one to 80. The ants in the experiment are Paratrechina longicornis, also known as "crazy ants" due to their erratic movements. Human participants were told to avoid any verbal or gestural communication as this mirrors the ants' natural constrains. They could also only handle the object using specific designated handles equipped with force meters. Experts found that when humans worked alone, they outperformed ants by a wide margin. They were also said to have used strategic planing to complete the task efficiently. But in group settings, ant colonies showed incredible coordination and problem-solving abilities. The small but mighty insects showed a unified force, using collective memory to process their mistakes and maintain consistent progress to fit the T through. Humans, meanwhile, struggled to improve their performance after making mistakes with their communication restricted. Instead of attempting to work as a group, human participants showed to have "greedy" strategies, with a focus on short-term solutions. Experts therefore credited this discrepancy to the ants' social structure as, in a colony, they operate as a "super-organism". He was in his 60s, she was young enough to be his daughter. He wrote letters to her incessantly — sometimes two or three a day — and they reveal a man besotted. But here’s the catch. This was all happening on the threshold of the First World War. The elderly lover was the Liberal prime mister of Great Britain — Herbert Henry Asquith. The object of his affection was 26-year-old Venetia Stanley, a child of the aristocracy and young woman of intelligence and determination. So did Asquith’s infatuation in any way alter the course of history? That’s a question that novelist Robert Harris kept asking himself during the writing of Precipice, a thriller that immediately shot to the top of the bestseller lists when it was initially published in the United Kingdom. What is clear is that Stanley was not only an obsession for Asquith but also a dangerous distraction — and the evidence is there in the aging prime minister’s fevered letters to her. It’s from them, for example, that we learn of Asquith’s determination at a time of crisis to flee London and spend time with her in North Wales. “It’s absolutely extraordinary, isn’t it?” Harris says. “Here he is, looking at railway timetables less than a week before war breaks out. It’s quite astonishing that he could do that. I think it just shows you that our statesmen had no idea what they were getting into in 1914.” In today’s climate of tight security protection for major political figures, Asquith’s freedom to do what he wanted seems unimaginable. But that’s how it was. The prime minister could take a stroll along the embankment or board a train without anyone really taking notice. “There was no bodyguard. He didn’t even take a private secretary.” The thought still leaves Harris incredulous. “When the whole country is being mobilized, he can slink off on a Friday through to Monday. It’s quite an extraordinary situation to be out of touch that long from the central government — and all because of an obsession for this young woman.” The novel is not only a riveting account of an intense but blighted love affair. It also explains with unusual clarity why the 1914 assassination of an Austrian archduke led to a catastrophic European conflict. The novel’s supporting cast of real-life players — including Winston Churchill and David Lloyd George — are necessary components in the story Harris tells. For him, writing about Asquith and Venetia opened a window to wider issues that he could not disregard. “When I started to write the book I found that I could clear away a lot of the fog of war,” he says. “I felt for the first time that I fully understood what was happening in 1914 and 1915.” Harris is on the phone from his home in rural England, taking a breather after a major European book tour as well as a massive publicity campaign on behalf of Conclave, the hit movie version of his best-selling novel about power politics within the Vatican. “I think it’s a brilliant film, and I’m immensely proud to have provided the source material for it,” the 67-year-old writer says. Harris, an ex-journalist turned best selling novelist, has a fascination for how systems work and what happens to them under stress. That fascination is a driving force in Conclave, as it is in Precipice. This new novel may be a fictional recreation, but it’s anchored in the reality of Prime Minister Asquith’s letters to Venetia Stanley. Venetia’s replies were destroyed, but the Asquith side of the correspondence, provided solid clues to the nature and content of her responses which in this book are products of Harris’s own imagination. When an early selection of Asquith’s letters was published a few decades ago, Harris was willing to accept a “consensus” that the affair was no more than a “platonic diversion.” Later access to the full body of letters changed his mind. “Once I set myself the task of composing her replies and began working out from his letters where the two of them were when written and the daily details of it all, the whole thing shot into much larger focus. You begin to see for the first time how much of a preoccupation she was for Asquith, how much of an obsession.” The novel even hints that this obsession contributed to the allies’ disastrous Gallipoli campaign, a pet project of Winston Churchill who at that time was First Lord Of The Admiralty. “The evidence is inescapable from Asquith’s own letter,” Harris says. “During the crucial meeting when Churchill first proposed the idea, Asquith spent the best part of hall an hour in correspondence with Venetia. So I think we can say that if Asquith had been paying more attention, he might have examined Churchill’s ideas more forensically and concluded they had not been properly thought through.” Asquith’s letters weren’t just expressions of lovesick rapture. They were also notoriously indiscreet about top-secret meetings and the inner workings of government. When they met, Asquith thought nothing of showing her confidential dispatches and soliciting her opinions on government policy. “Up until 1914, he was the dominant political personality in Britain,” Harris says. “He was so intellectually able and such a powerful debater that he could control a government that included people like Churchill and Lloyd George. He was a significant figure but was overwhelmed by the First World War, as many others were. So I think he increasingly sought refuge in Venetia’s company and advice.” Harris feels sympathy for Asquith but he doesn’t subscribe to the view of some commentators that there was nothing physical in his relationship with Venetia. “He wrote her 560 letters — and she kept them all. She must have written more than 300, and he read them all. I think the notion that there wasn’t a physical element to the romance is absurd when one gets to examine all the evidence. “First of all, we know that Asquith was notorious for making advances to young women. Secondly Venetia also had a lot of affairs with married men, including Lord Beaverbrook, in later life. “Asquith is a Victorian gentleman. He’s not going to write in detail about a physical relationship, but the hints are there. The temperament was there. The opportunity was there. I think it’s naive to pretend there was not a sexual element to it.” Harris was determined to write about Asquith — in many ways a “decent man” — with compassion. ” It would have been easy to have written a sort of me too book about a young woman and a much older predatory man. But I don’t think that would have been historically accurate, I think Vanessa was a formidable character and not without power herself. So there was something tragically doomed about his love for her. His in a way was the tragedy of a man brought down by his own folly. I wanted to convey that.”

The British-Canadian computer scientist often called the godfather of AI said over the weekend that he doesn’t have any guilty regret, which he said is when someone has done something when they know they shouldn’t have at the time. “In the same circumstances, I would do the same again,” he said of his research, which dates back to the 1980s and has formed the underpinnings of AI. “However, I think it might have been unfortunate in that we're going to get superintelligence faster than I thought, and I wish I'd thought about safety earlier.” Superintelligence surpasses the abilities of even the smartest humans. Hinton thinks it could arrive in the next five to 20 years and humanity may have to “worry seriously about how we stay in control.” Hinton made his prediction during a press conference in Stockholm, where he is due to a receive the Nobel Prize in physics on Tuesday. Hinton, a University of Toronto professor emeritus, and co-laureate John Hopfield, a Princeton University professor, are being given the prize because they developed some of the foundations of machine learning, a computer science that helps AI mimic how humans learn. Hinton kicked off his Nobel week on Saturday with the press conference, where he appeared with laureates in chemistry and economics and was asked about AI safety and regulation. Hinton left a job at Google last year to speak more freely about the technology's dangers, which he has said could include job losses, bias and discrimination, echo chambers, fake news, battle robots and even the end of humanity. On Saturday, he said he considers lethal autonomous weapons to be a short-term danger. "There isn't going to be any regulation there," he said, pointing out that European regulations have a specific clause exempting military use of AI from restrictions. "Governments are unwilling to regulate themselves, when it comes to lethal autonomous weapon, and there is an arms race going on between all the major arms suppliers like the United States, China, Russia, Britain, Israel and possibly even Sweden, though I don't know." A day later, Hinton put his concerns about AI aside to deliver a lecture with Hopfield explaining the research that earned them their Nobel. "Today I am going to do something very foolish." Hinton said in introducing his portion of the pair's hour-long speech. "I am going to try and describe a complicated technical idea for a general audience without using any equations." The audience chuckled. The talk began with Hopfield describing a network he invented that could store and reconstruct images in data. It led Hinton to later create the Boltzmann machine, which learns from examples, rather than instructions, and when trained, can recognize familiar characteristics in information, even if it has not seen that data before. Hinton said students in his lab and others run by fellow AI pioneers Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun were using Boltzmann machines to pre-train neural networks — machine learning models that make decisions in a manner similar to the human brain — between 2006 and 2011. By 2009, two of Hinton's students had showed the technique "worked a little bit better than the best existing techniques for recognizing fragments of phonemes in speech and that then changed the speech recognition community," Hinton said. Phonemes are small units of sound that can change the meaning of a word. Google later began working on technology based on Hinton's discoveries and "suddenly the speech recognition on the Android got a lot better." Even though the kind of Boltzmann machines Hinton was working with back then are no longer used in the same ways as he used them, he said "they allowed us to make the transition from thinking that deep neural networks would never work to seeing that deep neural networks actually could be made to work." Nobel Week will continue Monday with a discussion about the future of health before an awards ceremony and banquet is held Tuesday. Hinton has said he will donate a portion of the prize money — equivalent to about C$1.45 million — he and Hopfield will be given to Water First, which is working to boost Indigenous access to water, and a charity supporting neurodiverse young adults. He is also reportedly due to donate an early Boltzmann chip to the Nobel Prize Museum. The Nobel is not the only prize Hinton scooped up this month. On Friday, he, Bengio, LeCun, Chinese-American computer scientist Fei-Fei Li and Nvidia founder Jensen Huang, were awarded the Vin Future Prize, a US$3 million prize for science breakthroughs in a ceremony in Vietnam. Despite a challenging final quarter, the market delivered strong returns for the year, with midcap and smallcap stocks outperforming and rewarding investors handsomely. “However, benchmark indices like the Nifty and Sensex lagged behind their global counterparts, particularly the US markets. This underperformance was largely driven by persistent and aggressive selling by FIIs,” Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart Ltd, said. From the all-time highs in September, the BSE benchmark is down 8.46 per cent while Nifty has lost 9.37 per cent from the record peak level. The challenges deepened in the final quarter as disappointing corporate earnings and weaker-than-expected economic growth further dampened investor confidence, contributing to the subdued performance of the headline indices, Meena said. Markets came under bear attack from October onwards amid concerns of foreign investors fleeing the domestic market and stretched valuations. However, the Indian equity market faced headwinds due to record levels of aggressive selling by FIIs. Adding to the challenges, disappointing Q2 earnings by India Inc. and a slowdown in GDP growth further dampened investor sentiment,” Meena said. In 2023, the BSE benchmark jumped 11,399.52 points or 18.73 per cent, and the Nifty climbed 3,626.1 points or 20 per cent. Additionally, FII flows will remain a crucial factor in determining the performance and direction of largecap stocks, given their outsized influence on market sentiment,” he added. “Factors dependent for growth would again be similar to last year like geopolitical tussle, US Fed interest rate trajectory and Donald Trump’s tariff policies along with revival of local corporate earnings followed by domestic government policies to support growth. The research shows how successful terrestrial micro-organisms are at colonization, even on extraterrestrial materials. The samples were collected by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency ( JAXA )'s spacecraft Hayabusa2 , which launched in December 2014 and rendezvoused with Ryugu in June 2018. Haybusa2 then spent a year studying the asteroid, which has a diameter of around 3,000 feet (900 meters), before diving to its surface and scooping out a sample. This Ryugu sample was returned to Earth on Dec. 6, 2020, but Haybusa2 continued on to study more asteroids. The sample was split and sent to various teams of scientists, including the team that made this new discovery. "We found micro-organisms in a sample returned from an asteroid. They appeared on the rock and spread with time before finally dying off," team leader Matthew Genge of Imperial College London told Space.com. "The change in the number of micro-organisms confirmed these were living microbes. However, it also suggested they only recently colonized the specimen just before our analyses and were terrestrial in origin." The discovery took the form of rods and filaments of organic matter, which the team interpreted as filamentous microorganisms. Exactly what type of microorganisms these were isn't known by the team, but Genge has a good idea of what they may be. "Without studying their DNA , it is impossible to identify their exact type," the researcher said. "However, they were most likely bacteria such as Bacillus since these are very common filamentous micro-organisms, particularly in soil and rocks." Of course, with humanity currently engaged in the search for microbial life beyond the limits of our planet, particularly on Mars , the question is, could these micro-organisms have been present on Ryugu when the sample was gathered and thus could they represent alien life ? Disappointingly, the team has successfully and conclusively ruled this out. "Before we prepared the sample, we performed nano-X-ray computed tomography, and no microbes were seen," Genge said. "In any case, the change in population suggests they only appeared after the rock was exposed to the atmosphere, more than a year after it was returned to Earth." The researchers found that within a week of exposing the specimen to the Earth's atmosphere, 11 microbes were present on its surface. Just a week later, the population of terrestrial colonizers had grown to 147. "It was very surprising to find terrestrial microbes within the rock," Genge said. "We usually polish meteorite specimens, and microbes rarely appear on them. However, it only needs one microbial spore to cause colonization." While these results don't really tell us anything about extraterrestrial life, they do speak to the hardiness of life forms here on Earth, particularly micro-organisms. The findings also have implications for the effects that spacecraft and rovers could have on the planets they visit. "It shows that microorganisms can readily metabolize and survive upon extraterrestrial materials. On Earth, there is abundant home-grown organic material available, but on planets such as Mars, extra-martian organic materials may support an ecosystem," Genge said. "Our findings suggest that space missions could be contaminating space environments. It also shows that terrestrial microorganisms are adept at rapid colonization." Fortunately, as Genge pointed out, space agencies employ planetary protection efforts designed to minimize the likelihood of contamination. Genge also warns that scientists should be cautious of contamination when future samples are returned to Earth before assuming the detection of extraterrestrial life. "The fact that terrestrial microbes are the Earth's best colonizers means we can never completely discount terrestrial contamination," the researcher continued. "Most of the time, contamination is not a problem as long as you know its source. The problem comes when scientists attempt to claim that the 'pristine' nature of a specimen is evidence that features are extraterrestrial." As for the Imperial College of London researcher and his team, they are looking forward to examining more asteroid samples, hopefully free from visitors from Earth! "The team is continuing to study samples from Ryugu and Bennu . Hopefully, next time without terrestrial bacteria colonizing these materials!" Genge concluded.
