Guwahati: Year 2024 saw the Assamese film industry exhibit a commendable commitment to exploring a diverse range of narratives, tackling sensitive social issues with nuance and depth. Among the 29 films released, several standouts emerged, showcasing the industry's willingness to confront complex themes and challenge societal norms. Since the release of the first Assamese movie "Joymoti" in 1935, directed by the visionary cultural icon Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, the cinemascape of the industry has undergone tremendous changes in the last 89 years, extending a visual retreat to its audience. One notable film addressed the pervasive issue of homophobia, shedding light on the struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community in a thought-provoking and empathetic manner. Another film delved into the intricate dynamics of gender roles and the status of women in a male-dominated society, offering a poignant critique of patriarchal structures. Alongside these socially conscious narratives, the year also witnessed the release of gripping action-packed mystery thrillers, captivating the audience with their suspenseful plots and high-octane sequences. The industry took a significant leap forward in 2024 that explored a wide range of themes and genres. This new wave of Assamese cinema is not only a testament to the industry's growth in terms of technicalities and commercial aspect, but also a promising trend in storytelling. The films that hit the theatres this year till Nov 2024 include two in Bodo and one Sadri language, which is spoken by the tea tribe. In 2023, 21 movies including one each in Dimasa and Bengali languages were released. Movies released in 2024 like "Satya The Truth", "Ata Nirjon Duporiya" and "Mini" touched sensitive social issues like homophobia, women's status in a male-dominated society and the hardships and challenges of tea garden workers of the 200-year-old tea industry. "Mini" also brought laurels to the state as it was screened at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in presence of President Draupadi Murmu. While other films like "Bidurbhai", "Joy Hanu Man" and "Local Kung Fu 3" enthralled and captivated audience with action and "belly-aching comedy". The director of "Satya The Truth" Rupjyoti Borthakur claimed the film to be first-of-its-kind in the industry to address same-sex relationships. The film released in Feb was set in the aftermath of India's decision to decriminalize same-sex relationship. "The idea behind making the film was to address the issue, which still considered as a taboo but very much rampant in our society. Due to social stigma, people fear to express their innate desires and hide it from the society. Interestingly enough, on the same day the film was released one of my relative in London attended a same-sex marriage in London. Although the film was not a commercial hit, if it has inspired at least a single person to express their love they believe, is a bigger success for me," Borthakur said. Khanjan Kishore Nath, who directed "Ata Nirjon Duporiya", explored the plight of a young couple who plans to spend some intimate moments together and while doing so they become victim of taboo where the system exploits them. "In third world countries like India, women are mostly considered as second class citizens and are very much conservative on subjects like sexuality. I just wanted to convey that society should not bother about what an adult couple in consensus do in their private space. Though the movie did not go well in the theatres, soon it will be released on OTT, and we are keeping our hopes high," Nath said. Both the directors expressed hope that with young filmmakers venturing out for filmmaking in the industry, Assamese audience will soon find diverse taste. Despite the release of 29 movies, only four of them "Bidurbhai", "Swargarath", Zubeen-garg starrer "Sikaar" and "Local Kung Fu 3" managed to good box office collection. Sources said "Bidurbhai" has earned over Rs 12 crore. "Joy Hanu Man" directed by Himanshu Prasad Das introduced the concept of "superheroes" in Assamese cinema where a college boy in order to find the murderer of a dear one, fights an evil political gangster nexus in the disguise of 'Hanuman', the famous Monkey god. He said the movie was not exactly a superhero movie, but attempted to show how a common man can also become a superhero if he has the urge and intention to good for the society. He noted that the new-generation filmmakers are experimenting not only in terms of subjects, but in the aspect of direction treatment as well. "With limited budget and resources, Assamese cinema has progressed leaps and bounds in last few years. Due to financial constraints and limited screens available, we obviously cannot dare to spend like South-Indian movies. Had the circumstances been similar, we too have the potential to make blockbusters like them," he added, with a hope that Assamese film industry will too achieve the grandeur like South-Indian industry in the future. Sen. Noel Frame , D-Seattle, sent the missive last Friday as a follow-up to discussion during a Washington state Senate Democratic Caucus retreat. But she inadvertently blasted it out to every Republican senator too. You can predict what happened next. Her email and attached PowerPoint presentation found their way onto social media. A furor followed. Conservative podcaster Brandi Kruse, a former television journalist, led the way, calling the materials “worse than getting a lump of coal in your stocking.” “Probably the worst email and ideas in state history,” wrote Rep. Travis Couture , R-Allyn, on X. He will be the lead Republican on the House Appropriations Committee next session. Frame on Monday described the email mixup as a “very simple error.” She said her presentation was intended as an “education exercise” for her Democratic colleagues. With the state facing a multi-billion dollar shortfall, she said her role as vice chair of finance on the Senate Ways and Means Committee is to explore tax options while others try to identify savings. “I wanted to get the conversation started early. Not this early. Now, every legislator is better prepared,” she said Frame’s email says the quiet part out loud. House Speaker Laurie Jinkins and Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen have said voters’ preserving of the capital gains tax in the November election is a sign they’re comfortable with requiring super-wealthy individuals and large businesses to pay a little more. And Democratic budget writers in the two chambers have already indicated that they plan to consider all revenue options to erase a shortfall estimated between $12 billion and $16 billion over the next four-and-a-half fiscal years. They’ve just not itemized tax policies in the manner Frame did. For example, there have been private conversations on attempting a statewide version of Seattle’s JumpStart tax levied on companies with large payrolls and high-paid employees . Frame puts it atop her list. The idea is employers would pay a tax on the total compensation paid to employees making more than $168,600 annually. It would affect companies with an annual payroll of $8 million or more in Washington. A “wealth tax” is on her list as well. Last year, she proposed a 1% levy on intangible assets above $250 million such as cash, bonds and stocks. Gov. Jay Inslee last week called for a similar tax on wealth above $100 million. Frame’s PowerPoint includes a guesstimate of what might be raised if the threshold is lowered to $50 million. In addition, Frame suggests the Democratic majorities in the House and Senate could make another run at a 1% real estate transfer tax on any portion of property sales above $3.025 million. That proposal didn’t reach the finish line last session. Her roster includes a 1% surcharge on taxes paid by the state’s largest corporations, an excise tax on guns and ammunition sales, a lift of the 1% cap on annual property tax increases , and a sales tax on self-storage unit rentals. “We can fund world-class schools, affordable housing, and more by making the wealthy few pay what they owe,” reads the PowerPoint. “We have to identify the villain and the problem blocking our progress and how we can take action to solve the issue.” Pedersen said Monday he doesn’t think it’s “necessarily a bad thing” the email got out. Democrats are trying to be transparent on the pluses and minuses of different revenue options, he said, adding that there will be months of discussion “before we get to the answer.” Even so, Pedersen distanced himself from the content. “The PowerPoint contained language that Sen. Frame was trying to sell the caucus on and I’ll say that reflects Sen. Frame’s viewpoint, and that’s not necessarily the viewpoint of any other member,” he said. Frame also outlined tax relief ideas such as a renters’ credit and a property tax exemption for one’s primary residence. A margin tax for businesses is on the list too. This would allow a company to choose a major deduction — like the cost of labor — before tax is calculated on its gross receipts. In her email, Frame invited her Democratic colleagues to reach out if they had interest in sponsoring a revenue bill. “Let’s spread that tax policy love around! 😊,” she wrote. 2025 Revenue Discussion slides The PowerPoint presentation emailed by Sen. Noel Frame featuring discussion and possible messaging about tax policy proposals for 2025. 2025 SDC revenue policy handout – FINAL The PowerPoint presentation emailed by Sen. The Colorado Buffaloes are typically one of the more controversial programs in college football, but fans across the country united on Saturday to call out what many are perceiving as a missed call by officials. With the No. 16 Buffaloes (8-2) taking on the Kansas Jayhawks (4-6) at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Colorado found themselves trailing early. The Jayhawks led by as many as 17 points in the first half, but Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders was able to overcome a slow start and chip away at the lead. Sanders was also able to overcome a vicious hit to his knees by Kansas defensive end Dean Miller, which many fans felt should have been called roughing the passer. Kansas with a big hit on Shedeur Sanders 😬 pic.twitter.com/5jXVaGb1Rh While the officials contemplated making the call, they concluded that Miller's hit was not a penalty due to the fact Sanders was out of the pocket, This decision caused college football fans to be outraged and also led to many social media rants about the missed call. "Insane that that’s not roughing bro what are we doing," questioned one fan. "crazy not to call that," wrote another. "SHOULD’VE EJECTED HIM! THAT’S SO DIRTY," added another outraged fan. "Should be ejected for this. Dirty," commented another. Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images While fans are focused on the hit, Sanders is more likely focused on leading the Buffs to a comeback. Colorado went into halftime trailing by a score of 23-14, and looking to improve its 5-8 record when trailing at halftime to 6-8. Sanders still had himself a productive first half, completing 12-of-13 passes for 157 yards and two scores. Newcastle United’s hopes of returning to European football after a one-season absence have been boosted ahead of their Boxing Day home clash with top six rivals Aston Villa. Eddie Howe’s side have reacted well to their disappointing 4-2 defeat at Brentford earlier this month by taking maximum points from a home game against struggling Leicester City and Saturday’s visit to Ipswich Town . There has also been an upturn in United’s form in front of goal after they plundered their way to a combined eight goals in the consecutive victories. Another route to Europe moved a step closer when Sandro Tonali scored twice in last week’s 3-1 win in a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with Brentford that helped set up a two-legged semi-final meeting with Arsenal .
