Flying during pregnancy can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Whether you're planning a relaxing getaway, visiting loved ones, or handling work obligations, the journey requires a little extra preparation to ensure both your safety and comfort and that of your baby. While air travel is generally safe for pregnant women, there are vital considerations to remember—from understanding your health status to navigating airline rules and mitigating potential inflight health risks. A doctor on board delivered the baby with help from the cabin crew. For expectant mothers, flying can present unique challenges, such as swelling, fatigue, and an increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Additionally, navigating airline policies regarding pregnancy and knowing the right time to travel is vital for a smooth journey. Thankfully, with expert insights and a proactive approach, pregnant travelers can take to the skies confidently and safely. 1 Consult your healthcare provider before traveling Doctors can assess your ability to travel safely Before booking any flights, discussing your travel plans with your healthcare provider is crucial. They can assess your health and the progression of your pregnancy to determine if flying is advisable. Certain conditions, such as severe anemia, sickle cell disease, or a history of preterm labor, may necessitate special precautions or even a recommendation to avoid flying. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists , having a prenatal check-up before you leave to confirm your due date and ensure you're up-to-date on vaccinations is essential. Here's a checklist for traveling while pregnant: Time Activity Products Needed 1–2 Weeks Before Travel Prepare for travel Travel insurance, doctor's approval letter, prenatal records Pack essentials Maternity clothing, compression socks, travel-sized pregnancy pillow Day of Travel (Morning) Hydrate and prepare snacks Water bottle, healthy snacks, prenatal vitamins Dress comfortably Comfortable shoes, loose maternity clothing Prepare for relaxation Noise-canceling headphones, eye mask At the Airport/Station Ensure comfort and hygiene Toiletry kit (moisturizer, lip balm), small pillow for back support Stay mobile and comfortable Lightweight bag for essentials During Travel (First Few Hours) Support posture and circulation Maternity support belt, compression socks Stay entertained Books, podcasts, music Perform stretches No additional products (seated stretches recommended) Midway Through Journey Take a bathroom break No additional products Eat light meals/snacks Pre-packed healthy snacks Arrival (First Day) Adjust to destination Local hospital/clinic contact info Relax and settle in Extra pillows for sleeping comfort Unpack essentials Body lotion, hand sanitizer, wipes Daily Routine During Stay Stay comfortable and healthy Prenatal vitamins, nutritious food, comfortable bedding Explore or rest as needed Travel stroller (if applicable), portable fan (for warm climates) Emergency Preparedness Have essentials ready First aid kit, emergency contact list, phone charger The flag carrier states that expecting cabin crew may work in a temporary ground attachment and resume flying duties after maternity leave. 2 Understand airline policies and prepare the necessary documentation After 36 weeks, many airlines have restrictive travel policies Airlines have varying policies regarding pregnant travelers, especially as you approach your due date. Many airlines restrict travel after 36 weeks of pregnancy; some may require a letter from your doctor confirming your due date and that you're fit to fly. It's advisable to check with your specific airline before flying. As noted by the National ChildbirthTrust , some airlines require written documentation from your practice nurse, birthing specialist, or obstetrician to confirm you are in good health, that your pregnancy is uncomplicated, and your due date. Despite all the regulations and advisories, many women still fly while pregnant for a multitude of reasons, and that sometimes leads to unexpected deliveries on the aircraft: Date Airline Route Event Description January 19, 2023 Emirates Tokyo Narita to Dubai International A mother gave birth during the 12-hour overnight flight. September 2021 Turkish Airlines Istanbul to Chicago A Moroccan passenger delivered a child mid-flight. July 2019 Unspecified Doha, Qatar, to Beirut, Lebanon A baby was born, prompting a diversion to Kuwait for immediate medical care. August 2020 MIAT Mongolian Airlines Unspecified Twins were born aboard the flight; the airline granted them free flights for life. February 2020 Qatar Airways Bound for Bangkok The flight diverted to Kolkata after a baby was born onboard. October 2019 Air India Enroute to Kochi The flight diverted to Frankfurt following an in-flight birth. April 2017 Jet Airways Dammam to Kochi A baby boy was born mid-flight; the airline offered him free travel for life. June 2015 Cebu Pacific Air Dubai to Manila A baby girl was born at 36,000 feet; the airline awarded her 1 million frequent flyer miles. October 2011 AirAsia Kuala Lumpur to Kuching A baby boy was born mid-flight; the airline provided a gift and free flights. December 2009 Northwest Airlines Amsterdam to Boston A woman gave birth over the Atlantic Ocean; the flight continued to its destination. March 2004 Virgin Atlantic Johannesburg to London The airline experienced its first in-flight birth at 36,000 feet; the baby was named Virginia, and the airline named an aircraft in her honor. 3 Take measures to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) A common and dangerous side effect of traveling while pregnant Pregnancy increases the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition where blood clots form in the deep veins, often in the legs. Long flights can further increase this risk due to prolonged immobility. To mitigate this risk, consider the following strategies: Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the flight to maintain good circulation. Move regularly: Take short walks around the cabin every 30 minutes and perform in-seat exercises, such as ankle circles and foot flexes. Wear compression stockings: These can help improve leg blood flow and reduce swelling. The National Health Service advises wearing graduated elastic compression stockings to help reduce leg swelling and the risk of DVT. The airline allegedly banned on-duty breast pumping and penalized absences. 4 Choose the optimal time for travel. 14 to 28 weeks is considered the best time to fly The timing of your trip can significantly impact your comfort and safety. The second trimester (14 to 28 weeks) is often considered the safest and most comfortable time to travel. Morning sickness has typically subsided during this period, and energy levels are higher. The National Health Service notes that many women find the best time to travel or take a holiday in mid-pregnancy, between 4 and 6 months. Airline Flying While Pregnant Policy American Airlines Medical certificate required after 36 weeks for domestic flights Delta Air Lines No restrictions; consult with your doctor United Airlines Doctor’s note required within 7 days of due date Emirates Medical certificate required after 29 weeks Qantas Clearance needed for multiple pregnancies after 28 weeks Lufthansa Medical certificate needed after 28 weeks Ryanair Travel restricted after 36 weeks; 32 weeks for multiples JetBlue No formal policy; consult your doctor British Airways No flying after 36 weeks; doctor’s note after 28 weeks 5 Pack essential items and plan for comfort Comfort is critical while traveling pregnant. Ensuring your comfort during the flight can make a significant difference in your travel experience. Consider the following tips: Bring your maternity records: Carry a copy of your prenatal records if you need medical attention during your trip. The National Health Service recommends taking your maternity medical records with you so you can give doctors the relevant information if necessary. Dress comfortably: Wear loose-fitting clothing and comfortable shoes to accommodate any swelling. Use a seatbelt properly: Fasten the seatbelt under your bump and across your pelvis for safety and comfort. Stay nourished: Pack healthy snacks to maintain energy levels and prevent nausea. It is alleged the expecting mother was in between flights when her water broke.
Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, on Tuesday addressed the media at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi. He provided detailed insights into three major railway infrastructure projects approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) which will significantly boost connectivity in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. While discussing the details of the project and its benefits to the Khandesh region of North Maharashtra and connectivity to the Purvanchal region of Uttar pradesh, the Minister highlighted the significant role of the 375 km multi-tracking projects, which include the Jalgaon–Manmad 4th line (160 km), Bhusawal–Khandwa 3rd & 4th lines (131 km), and the Prayagraj (Iradatganj)–Manikpur 3rd line (84 km). These projects are set to boost connectivity between Mumbai and Prayagraj and aim to facilitate the movement of both passenger and goods trains, thereby driving the socio-economic growth of the region. The Minister further elaborated that these three projects, approved at the Cabinet level, are part of a comprehensive strategy to improve container movement between Purvanchal and Mumbai, including Varanasi. A detailed survey extending to Varanasi was conducted to ensure the corridor caters to the needs of emerging industries. These projects will enhance the logistic capacity to this section. This section will also work as a feeder section to Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), helping to decongest cities and major railway stations while enhancing connectivity to key ports in Maharashtra, such as Jawaharlal Nehru Port Mumbai and the upcoming Vadhwan Port. This connectivity will facilitate the seamless movement of both agricultural and industrial goods, thus strengthening the logistics ecosystem and supporting economic development. The Minister also emphasized the success of the recently launched Shetkari Samridhi Rail from Deolali to Danapur, which has achieved 200% occupancy since its inception. This innovative train service, with 10 passenger coaches and 10 coaches dedicated to agricultural produce, was introduced based on suggestions from farmers in Nashik. Many small-scale farmers expressed the need for a flexible transportation solution, as they are often unable to book an entire train. The Shetkari Samridhi Rail allows farmers to transport varied quantities, from half a quintal of produce like onions or pomegranates to larger consignments such as 10 quintals of soybeans. He further said that this train has been widely appreciated for its farmer-friendly approach, with positive feedback highlighting its popularity and utility. Encouraged by its success, plans are underway to expand similar services to other regions, enabling more farmers to benefit from affordable and reliable transportation for their agricultural products Answering a question from the media, the Minister discussed the implementation and progress of Kavach technology, aimed at enhancing safety and operational efficiency in the railway network. He highlighted that Kavach Version 3.2, which had been successfully implemented over 1600 km, is now being upgraded to the enhanced Kavach Version 4.0. Kavach Version 4.0 approved on 16th July 2024 by RDSO. The upgraded version incorporates advanced features to further bolster safety and efficiency in train operations. A massive initiative is underway to equip 10,000 locomotives with Kavach technology, with orders already placed and over 9,000 technicians and engineers trained for its installation. Comparing the scale of this project to starting a new telecom company, the Minister shared that testing between Sawai Madhopur and Kota has been successfully completed, and the section is now operational with Kavach 4.0. Additionally, certification for the Mumbai-Vadodara corridor is underway, while installation has commenced on routes such as Delhi-Mathura, Delhi-Alwar, and Delhi-Kanpur. As of now, Kavach 4.0 has been installed over 1,000 km, with plans to extend it to the entire country within the next six years. The Minister highlighted that while India is targeting nationwide coverage in just six years, other countries have taken more than 20 years to implement similar safety systems across their networks. The installation process has been made highly efficient, with Kavach being fitted on a locomotive in just 22 hours post-training. For achieving speeds of 130 km/h and beyond is not feasible without Automatic Train Protection (ATP) systems like Kavach, the Minister added. The Minister also outlined the environmental and economic benefits of the railway projects, emphasizing that the Railways, as an environment-friendly and energy-efficient mode of transportation, will play a crucial role in achieving the country’s climate goals while significantly reducing logistics costs. He highlighted that these projects will contribute to the reduction of 271 crore kilograms of CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to the plantation of 15 crore trees. The total cost of these three projects is approximately Rs 7,927 crore, and they are expected to be completed in four years. The projects will result in incremental loading of 50 million tons of cargo and will save a total of 15 crore liters of diesel per year. This underscores the Government's commitment to sustainable development and economic growth through green and efficient infrastructure. These sections of 375 km of railway line projects will connect key regions, including the Mumbai-Prayagraj-Varanasi route, Mumbai-Howrah golden diagonal, and Mumbai-Manmad-Bhusaval-Khandwa-Satna-Prayagraj-Varanasi route. The projects will enable the operation of additional passenger trains, benefiting pilgrims traveling to Jyotirlingas in Nashik (Trimbakeshwar), Khandwa (Omkareshwar), and Varanasi (Kashi Vishwanath), as well as to religious destinations in Prayagraj, Chitrakoot, Gaya, and Shirdi. By improving capacity and operational efficiency, the projects will also enhance connectivity between Khandesh region in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Purvanchal in North India, and Mumbai in the West. In addition to religious and cultural benefits, these projects will promote tourism by improving access to key attractions such as the Khajuraho UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ajanta and Ellora Caves UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Devgiri Fort, Asirgarh Fort, Rewa Fort, Yawal Wildlife Sanctuary, Keoti Falls, Purwa Falls, and more.

Billionaire Elon Musk poured more than $20 million into a mysterious super PAC at the end of the 2024 campaign, part of more than $250 million he spent overall to boost President-elect Donald Trump, new campaign finance reports show. Musk financed RBG PAC, according to the group's report filed Thursday night with the Federal Election Commission. The super PAC, which did not disclose its donors before the election, launched ads contending that Trump did not support a federal abortion ban. All of the money the group pulled in — $20.5 million — came from a single donation from the “Elon Musk Revocable Trust” located in Austin, Texas. RBG PAC spent almost all of its funds on digital ads, mailers and text messages, according to the campaign finance report, which covered Oct. 17 through Nov. 25. The group's website states that Trump and the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg agree on the abortion issue, drawing criticism from Ginsburg's granddaughter Clara Spara, who told the New York Times that the message was "nothing short of appalling." Trump took credit for the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, a decision that came after three Trump-appointed justices voted with the majority to overturn the national right to an abortion. (One of those justices, Amy Coney Barrett, was appointed to replace Ginsburg weeks before the 2020 election, after Ginsburg died in mid-September.) As president, he supported a federal ban on abortion after 20 weeks. But during this campaign, Trump backed away from that position and instead declared he supported states' rights to decide abortion laws . Democrats still hit Trump hard on those past positions to argue that if elected, he and a Republican Congress would act to restrict abortion nationwide. The late ad blitz from RBG PAC only represents a fraction of Musk's total election spending this year: He also financed America PAC, a super PAC which reported spending $157 million supporting Trump in the presidential race. America PAC's latest campaign finance report showed Musk donated $238 million to the group throughout the election cycle, including $120 million in the final weeks of the race alone. Federal disclosures show America PAC spent heavily on canvassing, text message-based get-out-the-vote efforts, printing and postage (likely for direct mail) and digital advertising too. It also ran a controversial cash giveaway that gave out $1 million each day to someone who signed the group's conservative-leaning petition. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner sued Musk and America PAC in late October trying to halt the giveaway, but a judge in the state didn't agree to stop the program . The Justice Department also warned the PAC around the same time that the giveaway might be illegal, but it's taken no public action on it. America PAC’s campaign finance report lists each of those $1 million prizes as payments for a "spokesperson consultant." Musk also gave $3 million to the MAHA Alliance , a super PAC affiliated with Robert F. Kennedy's "Make America Healthy Again" push, in late October. It's possible that Musk donated more to pro-Trump efforts too, as political committees continue to file fundraising reports pegged to Thursday night's deadline. The Space X and Tesla founder is one of Trump's top donors this cycle , but he's also been among his most visible. He's been a regular presence at Mar-a-Lago and by Trump's side during the transition (to the consternation of some in Trump's orbit ). Trump tapped Musk to advise him on cutting spending across the federal government as the co-chair of his " Department of Government Efficiency " initiative. This story first appeared on NBCNews.com . NoneThe Chinese threat actor known as Salt Typhoon has been spying on some high-value government and telecommunications organizations for several years now, recently debuting fresh backdoor malware, dubbed GhostSpider. Salt Typhoon (aka Earth Estries , FamousSparrow, GhostEmperor, and UNC2286) is among the People's Republic's most cutting advanced persistent threats (APT). In a campaign stretching back to 2023 , it has compromised more than 20 organizations. Those organizations tend to be of the highest order, from all corners of the globe, and their breaches have in some cases remained undetected for years. Most recently, it's been known for targeting US telcos, including T-Mobile USA , and ISPs in North America . With access to a targeted network, the APT that Trend Micro calls Earth Estries can deploy any one of its varied and powerful payloads, which it is consistently building out, according to a new analysis from the firm. There's Masol RAT — a cross-platform tool it's used against Linux servers from Southeast Asian governments — and the modular SnappyBee (aka Deed RAT). The newly discovered GhostSpider, meanwhile, is a highly modular backdoor, adjustable for any particular attack scenario, according to Jon Clay, Trend Micro's vice president of threat intelligence. Related: OpenSea Phishers Aim to Drain Crypto Wallets of NFT Enthusiasts "So, I can enact a specific module to do one specific thing, and it only does that one thing, and then if I need something else, I enact another module. And this does make it much more difficult for defenders and researchers to identify what's what," Clay says, because one instance of GhostSpider might look entirely different from another. Besides its backdoors, the group also possesses a rootkit called Demodex, and Trend Micro has speculated that it might even have used Inc ransomware in some of its operations. The diversity of Salt Typhoon's malware may be connected to the very nature of how it operates. According to the researchers, it is a structured organization of distinct, specialized teams. Its various backdoors, for example, are managed by different "infrastructure teams." The tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) utilized in different attacks might vary significantly, with unique teams focusing in different geographic regions and industries — another reason why pinning down the Chinese APT has been so difficult over the years. "They are very sophisticated [at] gaining access, maintaining access, maintaining persistence, and wiping their tracks when they have done something to make it look like they were never there," Clay says. Related: CyCognito Report Highlights Rising Cybersecurity Risks in Holiday E-Commerce Earth Estries had been conducting long-term espionage attacks against governments and other targets since 2020. Around the middle of 2022, though, a switch flipped. "In the past, they were doing a lot of phishing of employees," Clay recalls. "Now they're targeting Internet-facing devices using n-day vulnerabilities, finding any open ports [or] protocols, or applications that are running that they can exploit in order to gain access." "N-day" refers to recently disclosed bugs that organizations might not have had a chance to patch yet. The group's favorite vulnerabilities have been dangerous (but now well-documented), including: "And we see this across the board," Clay notes. "Certainly, emails are still a big way to gain access to organizations, but it used to be 80%-plus [of cases]. I think now you're looking at a much smaller percentage of these attacks beginning with a phishing campaign." Related: Faux ChatGPT, Claude API Packages Deliver JarkaStealer Often, Salt Typhoon doesn't exploit vulnerabilities directly in its target's network. Instead, it opts for a more tactful approach. Since 2023, its victims have spanned no fewer than four continents — from countries as diverse as Afghanistan, India, Eswatini, and the US — with the greatest concentration being in Southeast Asia . These organizations have come from the telecommunications, technology, consulting, chemical, transportation, and nonprofit sectors, with a special emphasis on government agencies. Not all of these organizations are necessarily the hackers' final destination, though. A nongovernmental organization (NGO), for example, may house interesting data worth stealing, or it might just provide a covert springboard for attacking a more important government agency. In 2023, for instance, researchers observed Salt Typhoon compromising consulting firms and NGOs that work with the US government and military, with the goal of more quickly and effectively breaching the latter.
