Israel has killed all life in GazaJimmy Carter, the United States’ longest-lived president, was never afraid of speaking his mind. Forthright and fearless, the Nobel Prize winner took pot-shots at former prime minister Tony Blair and ex-US president George W Bush among others. His death came after repeated bouts of illness in which images of the increasingly frail former president failed to erase memories of his fierce spirit. Democrat James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr swept to power in 1977 with his Trust Me campaign helping to beat Republican president Gerald Ford. Serving as 39th US president from 1977 to 1981, he sought to make government “competent and compassionate” but was ousted by the unstoppable Hollywood appeal of a certain Ronald Reagan. A skilled sportsman, Mr Carter left his home of Plains, Georgia, to join the US Navy, returning later to run his family’s peanut business. A stint in the Georgia senate lit the touchpaper on his political career and he rose to the top of the Democratic movement. But he will also be remembered for a bizarre encounter with a deeply disgruntled opponent. The president was enjoying a relaxing fishing trip near his home town in 1979 when his craft was attacked by a furious swamp rabbit which reportedly swam up to the boat hissing wildly. The press had a field day, with one paper bearing the headline President Attacked By Rabbit. Away from encounters with belligerent bunnies, Mr Carter’s willingness to address politically uncomfortable topics did not diminish with age. He recently said that he would be willing to travel to North Korea for peace talks on behalf of US President Donald Trump. He also famously mounted a ferocious and personal attack on Tony Blair over the Iraq war, weeks before the prime minister left office in June 2007. Mr Carter, who had already denounced George W Bush’s presidency as “the worst in history”, used an interview on BBC radio to condemn Mr Blair for his tight relations with Mr Bush, particularly concerning the Iraq War. Asked how he would characterise Mr Blair’s relationship with Mr Bush, Mr Carter replied: “Abominable. Loyal, blind, apparently subservient. “I think that the almost undeviating support by Great Britain for the ill-advised policies of President Bush in Iraq have been a major tragedy for the world.” Mr Carter was also voluble over the Rhodesia crisis, which was about to end during his presidency. His support for Robert Mugabe at the time generated widespread criticism. He was said to have ignored the warnings of many prominent Zimbabweans, black and white, about what sort of leader Mugabe would be. This was seen by Mr Carter’s critics as “deserving a prominent place among the outrages of the Carter years”. Mr Carter has since said he and his administration had spent more effort and worry on Rhodesia than on the Middle East. He admitted he had supported two revolutionaries in Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo, and with hindsight said later that Mugabe had been “a good leader gone bad”, having at first been “a very enlightened president”. One US commentator wrote: “History will not look kindly on those in the West who insisted on bringing the avowed Marxist Mugabe into the government. “In particular, the Jimmy Carter foreign policy... bears some responsibility for the fate of a small African country with scant connection to American national interests.” In recent years Mr Carter developed a reputation as an international peace negotiator. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his commitment to finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, his work with human rights and democracy initiatives, and his promotion of economic and social programmes. Mr Carter was dispatched to North Korea in August 2008 to secure the release of US citizen Aijalon Mahli Gomes, who had been sentenced to eight years of hard labour after being found guilty of illegally entering North Korea. He successfully secured the release of Mr Gomes. In 2010 he returned to the White House to greet President Barack Obama and discuss international affairs amid rising tensions on the Korean peninsula. Proving politics runs in the family, in 2013 his grandson Jason, a state senator, announced his bid to become governor in Georgia, where his famous grandfather governed before becoming president. He eventually lost to incumbent Republican Nathan Deal. Fears that Mr Carter’s health was deteriorating were sparked in 2015 when he cut short an election observation visit in Guyana because he was “not feeling well”. It would have been Mr Carter’s 39th trip to personally observe an international election. Three months later, on August 12, he revealed he had cancer which had been diagnosed after he underwent surgery to remove a small mass in his liver. Mr Obama was among the well-wishers hoping for Mr Carter’s full recovery after it was confirmed the cancer had spread widely. Melanoma had been found in his brain and liver, and Mr Carter underwent immunotherapy and radiation therapy, before announcing in March the following year that he no longer needed any treatment. In 2017, Mr Carter was taken to hospital as a precaution, after he became dehydrated at a home-building project in Canada. He was admitted to hospital on multiple occasions in 2019 having had a series of falls, suffering a brain bleed and a broken pelvis, as well as a stint to be treated for a urinary tract infection. Mr Carter spent much of the coronavirus pandemic largely at his home in Georgia, and did not attend Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration in 2021, but extended his “best wishes”. Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the closest adviser to Mr Carter during his term as US president, died in November 2023. She had been living with dementia and suffering many months of declining health. “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” Mr Carter said in a statement following her death. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”

Leafs captain Auston Matthews received support from Vegas Golden Knights superstar Jack Eichel for his decision to push for his preferred treatment for his injury. Auston Matthews has been sidelined for nearly a month with a mysterious upper-body injury. After being placed on injured reserve, the organization remained mum about the situation, until the new captain travelled to Germany for further treatment. Of course, the fact that Matthews had to travel across the world to receive treatment was a worrying sign, but some believed it was the right course of action and even gave him some praise for going to those lengths, as covered by Nick Barden of The Hockey News. Vegas Golden Knights' star Jack Eichel is no stranger to controversial treatments for concerning injuries and treatment as he underwent an experimental neck surgery that wasn't supported by his former team, the Buffalo Sabres, which ultimately led to his trade to Vegas. 'I think teams are communicating well with players and giving them the chance to see the people they want to see and I think that's been a big part of it as well. I think it goes both ways. It's good that he's been able to get the treatment that he needs, or wants. Hopefully, he can get healthy. 'I had a similar situation here years ago with my neck surgery. The [Vegas] organization was super supportive of what I wanted to do, so I give him a ton of credit on that.' It didn't sound like there was anything to be truly concerned about when it came to Matthews' injury and recovery timeline, and Brad Treliving believes that Matthews should be on the right track to a return to game-action sooner rather than later. While he is ruled out for tonight's game against Utah, Matthews' next chance to return would be Wednesday's game against Florida. Should they opt to give him some more time, the schedule would allow that as they wouldn't play again until Saturday in Tampa Bay. Chiwenga, Mnangagwa In Renewed FightFiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry has called on the Prime Minister to shift its focus from road inspections to the urgent needs of flood victims in the Western Division. In a social media post, Mr Chaudhry urged the Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to concentrate on areas where the need was more urgent. “It is strange that Prime Minister Rabuka should be touring the North to inspect road maintenance works in his area when he should be focusing on providing urgently needed assistance to the flood victims in the West,” he said. Former prime minister said they had received reports from Sigatoka, Nadi, Ra, Ba and Tavua indicating that relevant government agencies had made no efforts to reach out. “We urge the Prime Minister to please concentrate on where the need is more urgent. “The cyclone season has only just begun. “Any slackness on the part of the relief agencies in responding to the needs of the disaster victims, must be addressed and rectified right now.”The Toronto Maple Leafs ' recent struggles in net since the Anthony Stolarz injury a strong indicator of just how important he is to the overall success of the team. The 22-13-2 Maple Leafs currently sit atop the Atlantic Division, but they have been mediocre in their last eight games, posting a 4-4 record. A common denominator in this poor stretch has been the absence of solid goaltending since Anthony Stolarz was injured. As per LeafsLatest on X: .869 SV% 3.88 GAA Shots Against: 237 Saves: 206'' Before his injury, Stolarz was outstanding for the Leafs, ranking among the league leaders with a 2.15 GAA and a .927 save percentage. Since Stolarz went down, the Leafs have been forced to rely on Joseph Woll and Matt Murray in net, with mixed results. The team has been plagued by an unfortunate schedule, featuring numerous back-to-back games , which certainly hasn't helped. Early in the season, the tandem of Woll and Stolarz handled this with ease, but since Stolarz's injury, back-to back games have become a weak point for the team. Matt Murray, who has been attempting an NHL comeback after a plethora of injuries, has been serviceable if not subpar at best so far. He acknowledged that the Leafs' recent disappointing loss to the Washington Capitals was due in part to his lacklustre performance in goal . Given the situation, it may be time for the Maple Leafs to consider shoring up their goaltending depth, especially with Stolarz still roughly a month away from returning. This stretch has underscored just how vital Stolarz is to the team's success moving forward. If the Leafs can tighten up on defense to help insulate their goalies for the next month, it may negate the need for a stop gap solution in net. If not, they had better hope that Dennis Hildeby is ready for a larger workload, because the current setup isn't quite working out as planned. JOSH BERMAN JOINS ASSEMBLY AS EVP, ASSEMBLY LEAD IN NORTH AMERICAOTTAWA — Dave Cameron and his players once again found themselves in an uncomfortable position. Coming off a stunning, embarrassing loss to Latvia some 48 hours earlier at the world junior hockey championship, Canada led another of the sport's lesser lights by a single goal late in regulation Sunday. The tournament hosts would get the job done in the end. It wasn't pretty. Oliver Bonk, Caden Price and Mathieu Cataford, into the empty net, scored as the wobbly Canadians picked up an unconvincing 3-0 victory over Germany. "We're snake-bitten," Cameron, at his third world juniors as the country's head coach, said of the roster's toothless attack. "We're getting chances. That's all you can do ... it'll break." Carter George made 25 saves to register the goaltender's second straight shutout for Canada, which was coming off Friday's 3-2 upset loss to Latvia in a shootout. "I just want to go out there and do my part to get this team a win," said George, who took a shot at the empty net that dribbled wide. "We all pitch into the system." Nico Pertuch stopped 33 shots for Germany, which dropped its Group A opener at the men's under-20 tournament 10-4 to the United States before falling 3-1 to Finland. Canada, which entered with a 17-0 record all-time and a combined 107-26 score against Germany at the world juniors, went more than 120 minutes against a pair of hockey minnows without scoring a goal at 5-on-5. "It gets a little tense there when it was 1-0 with five minutes left," said defenceman Tanner Molendyk. "But I thought we handled it well." "A little tighter than maybe we would have expected," added fellow blueliner Sam Dickinson. Despite another sub-par performance, the victory sets up a mouth-watering New Year's Eve matchup against the U.S. for first place in the pool after the Americans fell 4-3 to the Finns in overtime earlier Sunday. Canada suffered one of the worst defeats in the program's history when Latvia — outscored 41-4 in four previous meetings at the event — shocked the hockey world. And while the plucky Europeans were full marks for their victory, the Canadians were largely disjointed and surrendered the middle of the ice for long stretches despite firing 57 shots on goal. There was more of the same Sunday through the two periods. "It's a quick turnaround, maybe, from (the Latvia loss)," said Canadian forward Berkly Catton. "That hurt, but we've got to be ready." Cameron made a couple of changes to his lineup — one out of necessity and another for tactical reasons. With star defenceman Matthew Schaefer, who could go No. 1 at the 2025 NHL draft, out of the world juniors after suffering an upper-body injury Friday, Vancouver Canucks prospect Sawyer Mynio drew in. Cameron also sat forward Porter Martone for Carson Rehkopf. Canada opened the scoring on the power play, which also had a new look after going 1-for-7 through two games, when Bonk scored from his normal bumper position in the slot at 9:40 of the first period. "Great feeling," said the Ottawa native and son of former NHLer Radek Bonk. "Fans have been awesome." Dickinson then chimed a one-timer off the post on another man advantage before George, who was in goal for Canada's 4-0 opener against Finland, made a couple of stops on the penalty kill inside a red-clad Canadian Tire Centre. "He's been unbelievable," Catton said of the netminder. "He held us in that game when we weren't playing great. He's been the heart and soul of our team." Petruch made a big save off Tanner Howe in the second before also denying Calum Ritchie from the slot on a power play, but the Canadians again looked out of sorts against a decidedly inferior opponent on paper. "You need different clubs in your bag to win this tournament," Cameron said. "Right now our defence and our goaltending are leading the pack. They're the clubs we're using the most. "The offence in this group's going to get going." Catton hit another post for Canada early in the third as a group with 11 first-round NHL draft picks finally started to flex its muscles. Molendyk then also found iron against Germany, set to meet Latvia in a crucial Monday matchup at the bottom of the Group A standings. "It was a lot better," Bonk said of the overall effort. "We didn't score as much as we should have or wanted to. It happens, but the goals will come." Price finally broke the 5-on-5 goose egg with 4:58 left in regulation on a shot that caromed off the end boards, Pertuch and in before Cataford fired into the empty net on another nervy night for the 20-time gold medallists. "Win a hockey game," Catton said of the feeling on the bench. "That's all that really matters — 1-0, 3-0, 10-0 — it's all the same. "We need the wins and we got it." Canada's biggest rival is now on deck. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 29, 2024. Joshua Clipperton, The Canadian Press

LET me tell you one thing, if you ever want to make people jealous, it’s by going on holidays to the sun in the darker months over here. I spent the end of February in California , and I am pretty sure I was blocked by most people on social media by the end. It wasn’t the bright lights of LA or the place I spent my J1, San Diego that had my Instagram followers cursing me. It was the beauty of the Joshua Tree National Park, the stunning surroundings of the Borrego Valley and the cool city vibes of Palm Springs. Ireland will always associate Joshua trees with U2 , so it was fascinating to go into the park and see them myself up close and personal. The park itself is 795,156 acres, apparently bigger than the state of Rhode Island , and slightly bigger than the park beside me at home. In comparison, Phoenix Park is 1,750 acres, so yeah, it was a surprise to me how big it is, especially in my head as I thought I would just be walking around it. Luckily we had our trusted guide Shannon who was driving us around and knew just where we had to go. First stop being of course to see some Joshua trees. I know I have seen them on the cover of the U2 album of the same name but they are magnificent in person. I tend to feel tiny most of the time, standing at 5ft 1, but this was another thing. They are tall but also stretch out in weird ways, just not your average oak tree. Also in the park, we visited a cactus farm - after all, we were in a desert area! One easy tip to stick to was staying on the provided path as no one wanted to be the person who fell into one of the many cacti sprouting their spines around the place. Now I’m guessing most people have heard of the Joshua Tree National Park, but have you heard of Borrego Springs? It was this amazing little town where their local tourist store was full of treats, from crystals to books, to t-shirts. There you can see wildflowers all along the roadsides, and then a bunch of metal sculptures of dinosaurs, elephants and more. Yes really! Wild cactus in a range of colours beside a giant steel sculpture of a T-Rex. We took a walk out through the sculptures, which were by welder Ricardo Breceda. There are around 130 of them dotted around 22 miles, and you can drive up to most of them, or there is even an option of a tour. It gave the vibes of what it would have been like to roam as humans beside these huge animals. I also loved driving around to see the many types of plant growing in the desert, such as a bright pink cactus. There were splashes of purple, yellow, pink and green along the roadside, which would be a stunning way to head to work. The Borrego Valley Inn is an adult-only, contactless hotel, with a very chilled aura, rocking chairs outside the rooms, and an electric fire inside to give cosy vibes. And being an adult-only hotel, there was even a nude pool if you fancied taking a dip - not that I did, because no one needed to see that. But I loved turning on the electric fire, curling up under the blanket and having some chill time. Dinner that evening was relaxed and we went for the nearby Big Horn food joint for some traditional burgers and fries. And as a veggie, I was delighted they had some fake meat for a burger for me too, so I could get the American experience. And it meant we were up early for a giant breakfast in Kendall’s cafe nearby before hitting the road to Palm Springs. You probably have heard of that part of California, it is mentioned in songs like Katy Perry’s California Girls, many of the Real Housewives have had episodes there and celebs such as Elvis have lived there. It is a gorgeous city, colourfully painted around the place, with a huge LGBTQ+ community - so we made sure to go to the drag bingo taking place in the Ace Hotel, where we were staying. We did a lot better in that than in the following quiz about the area! The Ace had a real 70s boho vibe about it, right down to the retro radio in the rooms. My room overlooked one of the two pools - the quieter one, while the main one had music and good vibes late into the evening. While staying here, I made sure to check out some of the vintage stores and if I had a bigger case, my house would look a lot cooler right now! One highlight we did was the Red Jeep Tour, which picks you up at your hotel and takes you around the Indian Canyons. We got to do a short hike around and see the stunning views in the valleys, see how the natives would have lived years ago, and see a side to California a lot of tourists miss out on. For March, it was already warm and I loved having a break in the Californian nature with the sun. We then dusted ourselves off from the canyons and threw on some robes and headed to the Spa at Sec-he for a soak. After some pampering, it was out to the pool to laze about in a private cabana, and take a dip with a Prosecco in hand - I could live this CA life I tell you! No wonder everyone wants to go to Hollywood! But the highlight of Palm Springs for me had to be Boozehounds. Yes, I loved walking the streets and the adorable shops where I picked up many a Taylor Swift -themed gift to bring home. I loved the open-roof Red Jeep Tour, where we got to swing by the Don’t Worry Darling set. But animals take preference over humans for me so the fact that I had my last night at a bar and restaurant that even gives dogs their own entrance and menu is 5 stars from me! And not only that, but they encouraged me to drink cocktails, as the proceeds from the Go Fetch Frosé go to a local animal shelter. God, heading home after this trip was hard - can someone become famous so I can be part of your entourage and go back to Palm Springs? GETTING THERE: Aer Lingus flights from €589 return, business class €2,199 return. STAYING THERE: Ace Hotel, €192pp per night, Borrego Valley Inn, €190pp per night DO THERE: Joshua Tree National Park - €28 per vehicle, Red Jeep Tour, €146pp (4 people min); Séc-he Spa day pass, €133 EATING: Palm Springs Surf Club, Big Horn Burgers & Shakes, Boozehounds
