Carter's death came over a year after the death of his wife, Rosalynn Carter , who died on November 19, 2023, at age 96. Two days before her death, Rosalynn joined her husband in hospice care at their home in Georgia. The former first lady and fierce advocate for mental health was diagnosed with dementia in early 2023. Before his death, Jimmy Carter was the first to pay tribute to his wife of 77 years, "Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. "She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me." During Rosylann's service in late November 2023, Amy, the Carters' daughter, read her father's love letter he dedicated to his wife while he was in the Navy. ATLANTA — On Jan. 18 and 19 the AT&T Playoff Playlist Live! will be held at State Farm Arena in advance of the College Football Playoff national championship on Jan. 20. The star-studded lineup was announced Thursday at a news conference at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Performances will include Lil Wayne and GloRilla on Saturday; and Camila Cabello, Myles Smith and Knox on Sunday. On game day, the Allstate Championship Tailgate, taking place just outside Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the Home Depot Backyard, will feature country acts on the Capital One Music Stage, including global superstar Kane Brown and iHeartCountry “On The Verge” artist Ashley Cooke. The concerts are just two of the festivities visiting fans can enjoy in the days leading up to the big game. The fan experience for both ticket holders and the general public has been a focus for event planners. Her 16-year-old son found her on the kitchen floor. First, he called Dad in a panic. Then 911. “I had a stroke and my life made a 180-degree turn,” Lara told the Miami Herald, recalling the medical scare she experienced in May 2020 in the early months of the COVID pandemic. “The stroke affected my left side of the body,” the North Miami woman and former high school math teacher said. Lara, an avid runner and gym goer, couldn’t even walk. “It was hard,” the 50-year-old mom said. After years of rehabilitation therapy and a foot surgery, Lara can walk again. But she still struggles with moving. This summer, she became the first patient in South Florida to get an implant of a new and only FDA-approved nerve stimulation device designed to help ischemic stroke survivors regain movement in their arms and hands. This first procedure was at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Lara’s rehab was at at the Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, part of a partnership between Jackson Health System and UHealth. Every year, thousands in the United States have a stroke , with one occurring every 40 seconds, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The majority of strokes are ischemic, often caused by blood clots that obstruct blood flow to the brain. For survivors, most of whom are left with some level of disability, the Vivistim Paired VNS System, the device implanted in Lara’s chest, could be a game changer in recovery, said Dr. Robert Starke, a UHealth neurosurgeon and interventional neuroradiologist. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the stroke rehabilitation system in 2021 to be used alongside post-ischemic stroke rehabilitation therapy to treat moderate to severe mobility issues in hands and arms. Lara’s occupational therapist can activate the device during rehabilitation sessions to electrically stimulate the vagus nerve, which runs from the brain down to the abdomen and regulates various parts of the body’s nervous system. The electrical stimulation rewires the brain to improve a stroke survivor’s ability to move their arms and hands. Lara also has a magnet she can use to activate the device when she wants to practice at home. Her therapy consists of repetitive tasks, including coloring, pinching cubes and grabbing and releasing cylindrical shapes. After several weeks of rehabilitation therapy with the device, Lara has seen improvement. “Little by little, I’m noticing that my hand is getting stronger. I am already able to brush my teeth with the left hand,” she told the Miami Herald in September. Since then, Lara has finished the initial six-week Vivitism therapy program, and is continuing to use the device in her rehabilitation therapy. She continues to improve and can now eat better with her left hand and can brush her hair with less difficulty, according to her occupational therapist, Neil Batungbakal. Lara learned about the device through an online group for stroke survivors and contacted the company to inquire. She then connected them with her Jackson medical team. Strokes are a leading cause of disability worldwide. While most stroke survivors can usually recover some function through treatment and rehabilitation, they tend to hit a “major plateau” after the first six months of recovery, he said. Vivistim, when paired with rehabilitation therapy, could change that. When you think of pigeons, you might conjure up images of grey speckled birds pecking bits of food off city streets. But there's a lot more to the feathered flock. In fact, some pigeons are quite fancy, according to Gary Parsons — and he would know. The veteran pigeon breeder from Sarnia, Ont., can boast of having the top show pigeon in the country, for now. His helmet pigeon was crowned grand champion pigeon at the Canadian Pigeon Fancier's National Show in January in Portage la Prairie, Man. Now, he's gearing up to bring 15 of his finest birds to compete at the next national championships, which are in Winnipeg from Jan. 10 to 11 and he's hoping for another successful year. "That would be outstanding," said Parsons, who's been pigeon keeping and breeding for five decades. They'll nibble at your fingers tips." 50 years of pigeon breeding About 800 birds and their owners are expected to make the trek to Manitoba next month, along with top-tier judges from as far away as Germany and the U.K. There are hundreds of breeds of pigeons but they are grouped into three types: racing pigeons, homing pigeons and show pigeons. "Most people just think of the pigeons that they see flying downtown or under the overpasses of the highways," Parsons said. "These show pigeons look totally different. Most people don't recognize them as being pigeons." Places like China, Austria and Hungry are seeing incredible interest," Heck said, noting pigeons can be raised in urban areas where bylaws allow for domestic birds. And while breeding and raising pigeons has been around for centuries, and was even a fixation for Charles Darwin as he worked to understand genetics, the hobby is in a slump here at home, experts say. The Sarnia group that Parsons belongs to has a current membership of approximately 10 people. Most of the members have 20 or 30 pigeons they keep in a shed or coop in their backyard to raise for competitions. Recruiting kids, Parsons said, is harder these days because there are so many other activities pulling their attention. Heck said he's looking to 4H groups interested in starting clubs to peak the interested of a new generation of pigeon aficionados. "People are drawn to the pigeon for their beauty, their strong flying abilities and their usefulness." Even Parsons's wife, Georgette, admits she has come to understand and love the hobby, at first out of necessity when her husband's job had him travelling and she had to care for the animals, and now because she enjoys being with the birds. "I got immersed because somebody had to pick up and do it, and I really got to enjoy the hobby," she said. "I didn't think you could get attached to these birds, but yeah, you can, very much so. Judges look at each pigeon's colour, size and weight to see how close they are to the standard for their breed, and there are many colours, including pale blues and pinks and spotted hues. "Each and every one of them has got unique features that are just absolutely striking," Georgette said. Kreskin's friend and former road manager, Ryan Galway, told The Associated Press that he died Tuesday at his home in Caldwell, New Jersey, where he spent much of his life. Galway said Kreskin had not been feeling well in recent weeks but otherwise did not provide a cause of death. David Pryor was considered one of the Democratic party’s giants in Arkansas and remained active in public life after he left office, including serving on the University of Arkansas’s Board of Trustees. Davis had been managing the disease for 1 1/2 to 2 years but it became acute shortly after his 80th birthday on Feb. 2. Davis was music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1975-88, Britain’s Glyndebourne Festival from 1988-2000, chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1989-2000, then was music director of the Lyric Opera from 2000-21. The lion share of those came in his 50s, 60s, and 70s, as filmmakers and TV producers turned to him again and again to imbue small but pivotal parts with a wizened and worn soulfulness. Cobbs appeared on television shows including “The Sopranos," “The West Wing,” “Sesame Street” and “Good Times.” He was Whitney Houston's manager in “The Bodyguard” (1992), the mystical clock man of the Coen brothers' “The Hudsucker Proxy” (1994) and the doctor of John Sayles' “Sunshine State” (2002). Cobbs rarely got the kinds of major parts that stand out and win awards. Instead, Cobbs was a familiar and memorable everyman who left an impression on audiences, regardless of screen time. By the 1980s, Friedman was writing crime novels that often included a version of himself, and he wrote a column for Texas Monthly magazine in the 2000s. Friedman's run at politics brought his brand of irreverence to the serious world of public policy. In 2006, Friedman ran for governor as an independent in a five-way race that included incumbent Republican Rick Perry. Friedman launched his campaign against the backdrop of the Alamo. Mull often played slightly sleazy, somewhat slimy and often smarmy characters as he did as Teri Garr's boss and Michael Keaton's foe in 1983's “Mr. Mom.” He played Colonel Mustard in the 1985 movie adaptation of the board game “Clue,” which, like many things Mull appeared in, has become a cult classic. The 1980s also brought what many thought was his best work, “A History of White People in America,” a mockumentary that first aired on Cinemax. Mull co-created the show and starred as a “60 Minutes” style investigative reporter investigating all things milquetoast and mundane. Willard was again a co-star. In the 1990s he was best known for his recurring role on several seasons on “Roseanne,” in which he played a warmer, less sleazy boss to the title character, an openly gay man whose partner was played by Willard, who died in 2020 . The Las Vegas Grand Prix was a mixed bag for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who finished fifth in Saturday night’s race on the Strip but clinched his fourth straight Formula One championship . The race was also a mixed bag for Las Vegas sportsbooks a year after they set record betting handles, or amount of money wagered, on the inaugural F1 race on the Strip. Station Sports and BetMGM again reported record handles for the F1 race as both sportsbooks shattered last year’s mark. “The handle was phenomenal,” Red Rock Resort sportsbook director Chuck Esposito said. “It was, by far, the largest F1 handle we had this year and easily surpassed the record handle we had last year on it.” BetMGM, which took the largest wager on last year’s race at $200,000 on Verstappen (who won as a -200 favorite), took twice as much money in bets on Saturday’s event. This year’s race was won in dominant fashion by pole winner George Russell of Mercedes, who closed as the +350 third favorite at Caesars Sportsbook. Betting was way down at the Westgate SuperBook, however. It wrote only 35 percent of what it handled last year, according to vice president of risk Ed Salmons. Caesars also saw a drop in the action. The book shattered its record handle on any auto race on the Las Vegas Grand Prix last year, when vice president of trading Craig Mucklow said it took well over $1 million in wagers. Mucklow said Caesars took in three times as much on the event as the Daytona 500, aka the Super Bowl of NASCAR. Verstappen was the odds-on favorite last year, but closed as the +550 fourth choice at Caesars this year before Saturday’s race. He was behind Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, the +220 favorite, Sainz’s teammate Charles Leclerc, the +275 second choice, and Russell. McLaren’s Lando Norris was the 9-1 fifth favorite, followed by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, a 22-1 long shot who drove from 10th place to second to give his team a sweep of the top two spots. Russell started on the pole and led every lap. “The handle was not on par this year compared to last, primarily due to George Russell’s dominance, which affected in-play wagering on the event,” Mucklow said. “However, we did benefit from the race being more competitive this year compared to last year’s pre-race (odds).” Sainz and Leclerc finished third and fourth, respectively. Station won on the event, while the Westgate was a small loser overall. “Getting Russell to win was a really good outcome for us,” Esposito said. “That was one of the best cases for us.
