Jaime Battiste, who is Mi’kmaq, said there has been an “attack” on fellow Liberal MP Randy Boissonnault, who left his position as employment minister on Wednesday after allegations of shifting claims of Indigenous identity and questions around his past business dealings. Boissonnault has been the subject of two ethics committee probes, and Battiste said a third one by the Indigenous and northern affairs committee is “a waste of time, and it seems to be the Conservatives’ way of ensuring that nothing gets done in the House of Commons.” The Conservatives, NDP and Bloc Québécois all supported pushing ahead with the third study, even after Boissonnault left cabinet. Though Liberal MPs did not object to the motion Thursday, Battiste said the committee’s time would be better spent studying legislation on important issues such as First Nations policing, a modern treaty commissioner and clean water for First Nations. “It’s very much my fear and frustration that politics is now becoming more important at the Indigenous and northern affairs committee than actually Indigenous Peoples that we’re there every day to try to make life better for,” he said. NDP MP Lori Idlout, who is a member of the committee, said Canadians deserve answers and she doesn’t expect the probe to cut into the committee’s other work. “It’s not a waste of time to have MP Boissonnault answer for why his identity kept changing. (AP) — Dayle Haddon, an actor, activist and trailblazing former “Sports Illustrated” model who pushed back against age discrimination by reentering the industry as a widow, has died in a Pennsylvania home from what authorities believe was carbon monoxide poisoning. Authorities in Bucks County found Haddon, 76, dead in a second-floor bedroom Friday morning after emergency dispatchers were notified about a person unconscious at the Solebury Township home. A 76-year-old man police later identified as Walter J. Blucas of Erie was hospitalized in critical condition. Responders detected a high level of carbon monoxide in the property and township police said Saturday that investigators determined that “a faulty flue and exhaust pipe on a gas heating system caused the carbon monoxide leak.” Two medics were taken to a hospital for carbon monoxide exposure and a police officer was treated at the scene. As a model, Haddon appeared on the covers of Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle and Esquire in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the 1973 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. Siegel, 63, spoke with Marc Beckman of the Some Future Day podcast about her experiences. She was released in an eight-day truce last November — one that Hamas later broke — but Keith remains behind, one of the “ American Seven ” who are still in Gaza, three of whom are thought to be alive. Siegel was born in South Africa and moved to Israel when she was a child. She met Siegel when he was a student from North Carolina visiting Israel. He remained in Israel after they fell in love, and the two of them eventually settled on a communal farm in southern Israel, Kibbutz Kfar Aza. Siegel recalled how the terrorists invaded their bomb shelter on October 7 after shooting and wounding Keith, her husband of 43 years. They broke his ribs in the process of abducting him, and took the couple to Gaza in Keith’s car. In Gaza, they were met by crowds of civilians — including women and children — who cheered the terrorists bringing hostages from Israel. They were forced into a tunnel, where they were later joined by other hostages, many wounded. They would be moved from one location to another 13 times before Aviva was freed. In one tunnel, she said, she was convinced that they would die for lack of oxygen. They were denied food and water for whole days at a time, she said. At one point, she personally witnessed a Hamas terrorist molesting one of the female Israeli hostages. She was later told that the molestation was frequent, though rarely in the open. Another time, several Hamas terrorists bound a female hostage and beat her brutally. When the young girl returned, wounded and crying, Siegel asked her why she had not screamed. She replied that she had not wanted to give the terrorists the satisfaction of hearing her screaming. She and Keith had promised to remain strong for each other, and she hoped to see him again. The suffering they endured was so intense from the first moments, she said, that anyone who understood it would not have allowed them to be held in Gaza at all. She said that while she was hopeful that President-elect Donald Trump could bring the hostages home, she did not want to stop urging President Joe Biden to do the same: January 20 might be too late.
