Max Verstappen wasn’t the biggest fan of the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix before the event’s inaugural race in 2023. He said he looked “like a clown” during last year’s opening ceremonies. Now, after two trips around the 17-turn, 3.8-mile course on the Las Vegas Strip, Verstappen has made far better memories in the city. The 27-year-old won his fourth consecutive F1 world title at Saturday night’s Las Vegas Grand Prix. He finished fifth in the race, but claimed enough points to solidify the championship with two events remaining. Verstappen also won the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix in 2023. “It was a very challenging season, and as a person at times it was very challenging,” Verstappen said. “This season taught me a lot of lessons that I’m very proud of how we handled it. In a way, that makes it very special.” Mercedes driver George Russell dominated the race from pole position, leading every lap in an easy victory. Russell finished 7.313 seconds ahead of Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. was third. Verstappen is the third F1 driver to clinch the world title in Las Vegas. Nelson Piquet (1981) and Keke Rosberg (1982) both clinched championships at the Caesars Palace Grand Prix, which was held in the parking lot of the hotel. Here are three takeaways from the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix: 1. Verstappen’s title season not as dominant Verstappen won his first championship after a thrilling battle with Hamilton in 2021. He then waltzed to titles in 2022 and 2023 with dominant efforts. This year wasn’t as easy for Verstappen. He appeared to be cruising to a championship early in the season after winning seven of the first 10 races. But then he had a tough summer. Verstappen went 10 races without a win, which allowed McLaren’s Lando Norris to pull close in the standings . Verstappen snapped his skid with a victory in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix on Nov. 3 to give him a comfortable lead over Norris. He said he prefers more straightforward seasons, but he believes this title was his most impressive. “Last year I had a dominant car, but I always felt that not everyone appreciated what we achieved as a team,” Verstappen said. “I’m very proud of this season because for most of the season, I would say 70 percent of the season, we didn’t have the fastest car.” Verstappen, who is third on F1’s all-time wins list with 62, is tied with Sebastian Vettel and Alain Prost for the fourth-most F1 titles with four. Hamilton and Michael Schumacher are tied for the most with seven. Juan Manuel Fangio is the lone five-time champion. “I was just happy to be there and dreaming of potential victories and standing on the podium, the normal things that are already very difficult to achieve,” Verstappen said. “Then we go on that run after a tough few years and we kept trying and we hit the ground running. To be standing here as a four-time world champion is just incredible.” 2. Mercedes finished 1-2 Russell and Hamilton were puzzled all weekend about the speed their cars showed during practice and qualifying. Fortunately for them, their pace carried over to the race. Russell was hardly challenged during his second victory of the season. Hamilton, after qualifying 10th on Friday, charged his way into second place. “I’m over the moon. What a weekend and totally unexpected, which makes it even sweeter,” Russell said. “It’s been a real surprise seeing how strong our pace has been and securing the pole. ... It was just a case of managing my pace, managing in the right corners and bringing it home.” The race marked the first time Mercedes finished first and second since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. It was a much-needed run for Hamilton, who placed 10th his last race in Brazil on Nov. 3. He will drive for Ferrari next season after a 12-year run with Mercedes that included six championships. “A great performance. It’s not that I didn’t think I could do it,” Hamilton said. “I’ve had many races like this, but I’m generally happy to have had the recovery. ... That was honestly one of the most enjoyable races.” 3. Constructors title battle Verstappen secured the drivers championship Saturday, but the fight for the constructors (team) title is still up in the air. Second-place Ferrari cut into its deficit after Sainz finished third and Charles Leclerc placed fourth. The team has 584 points, 24 behind first-place McLaren (608) with two races to go. Norris finished sixth Saturday and his teammate Oscar Piastri was seventh. “We just need to go into (the last two races) trying to maximize whatever we have,” Sainz said. “I think over the last few weekends we’ve done a good job. ... That’s why it was important for us to get (the) maximum number of points available, and we kind of did that for the pace that we had.” This year’s Las Vegas Grand Prix was a much better weekend for Sainz, who crashed after he ran over a manhole cover in the opening practice session last year. “I was hoping that (Las Vegas) had something to offer me after what happened last year. I’ll take a podium,” Sainz said. Contact Alex Wright at awright@reviewjournal.com . Follow @AlexWright1028 on X. Calgary, Canada, Nov. 22, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — , the innovative nanotechnology company that has developed a one-step, environmental solution that extracts lithium at exceptional rates, has just announced its pilot is now operational. This successful scale-up marks another important milestone in the lithium market, unlocking vast and untapped energy sources in North America and Europe. The Litus pilot follows the official opening of its patented nanomaterial production at its Calgary-based facility late last year. “We are thrilled our pilot is up and running,” shares Litus CEO Ghada Nafie. “Creating this pilot is a vision we have had since we founded the company and a mission we set out to accomplish. Now, we have validated this scale-up. We are already testing brines and extracting lithium. We are well on our way to making energy more efficient and more abundant!” The aqueous reservoirs in North America and Europe contain lithium in low concentrations that, until now, were not viable to extract. Litus LiNC is so efficient and effective it selectively harvests lithium from these sources with unmatched results. The Litus pilot is a plug-and-play modular unit integrating with systems already in place. Infrastructure requirements are low, and minimal water and energy are needed, for an environmental approach to lithium extraction that leaves the existing ecosystem intact. With Litus LiNC, the patented nanomaterial composites extract lithium in a matter of hours, creating a product so pure it does not require additional processing and can be sent directly to battery production plants. The pilot is designed to be transported on-site and is designed to be easily scaled up to commercial level. Litus LiNC is a low-cost, low-risk opportunity, making it easy to break even when lithium prices drop. And when lithium prices are high, Litus LiNC provides a very lucrative revenue stream. Orchestra that allowed youths to film performances on their phones lets grime rappers Lady Leshurr and Big Dog Yogo into its ranks to boost classical music audiences By TOM LAWRENCE Published: 14:58 EST, 27 December 2024 | Updated: 15:13 EST, 27 December 2024 e-mail View comments A British orchestra is teaming up with two UK grime artists in a bid to encourage more young listeners to get interested in classical music. The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) has been taking radical steps to try to appeal to a younger audience and earlier this year caused a stir over their policy to allow people to film during their shows. Tenor Ian Bostridge stopped a performance at Birmingham Symphony Hall last month criticising audience members using their phones during the show, although he later said he was unaware about the relaxation of the rules. Emma Stenning, the chief executive of the CBSO, told The Times that it was launching a 'listening project' in 2025 that would relax rules and allow widespread use of phones in the concert hall, to see if there was a desire for audience members to do so. She said: 'How do we make the symphony hall more welcoming and a place where people feel comfortable and themselves and how do we protect that space so that it is right for artists and so that people engage in the music in the best possible way?' The concert is being produced in collaboration with Punch Records, which will see some of its artists including Big Dog Yogo and Lady Leshurr perform live with the orchestra. The Legacy gig, which will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at Birmingham Symphony Hall, has stemmed from a book and documentary of the same name by the Punch Records agency, about the untold stories of Birmingham's grime, hip-hop, and rap scene Ms Stenning said the CBSO and other orchestras need to experiment to keep classical music alive for future generations. The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra are experimenting with new ways to attract a younger audience British singer and grime artist Lady Leshurr is set to perform with the CBSO in the special concert Grime artist Big Dog Yogo is also set to join the orchestra for the performance in April She told The Times: 'All the research that we do into new audiences says that people are really wanting a more immersive experience, something that speaks more directly to the music they might listen to at home and feels more relevant in their day-to-day lives,' Stenning said, adding that the grime concert was one of the projects trying to 'bring new people into the concert hall'. Tom Spurgin, the creative director of the CBSO, said that orchestral music and grime acts were not as far apart as they first seemed. He said: 'A huge amount of grime music is based on orchestral samples, so many of the bass lines those artists work with are tubas, trombones, bass trombones and double basses.' Mr Spurgin said the orchestra's musicians were supportive of the project and were transfixed when conductor Phil Meadows took them through the arrangements for the show. In May, Mr Bostridge urged the orchestra to reverse the policy on allowing phones in the concerts, after halting his performance. He clarified that he 'wasn't making a protest' but was simply unable to concentrate due to the distraction from at least two individuals filming. He said: 'You're looking at the audience and it's very interrupting and distracting to have phones being held up. It breaks the spell'. 'I didn't know about this policy and I wasn't making a protest of any sort to begin with, I simply couldn't carry on because I couldn't concentrate.' The concert is being produced in collaboration with Punch Records, which will see some of its artists including Big Dog Yogo performing Emma Stenning said the CBSO and other orchestras need to experiment to keep classical music alive for future generations The Classical Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in action (stock photo) Read More Singer who halted concert after audience on phones insists he 'wasn't making a protest' but urges orchestra to stop allowing filming during shows He added that 'almost all' of the audience applauded after he halted the concert. Despite Bostridge's criticisms, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra vowed to continue challenging concert hall conventions by permitting mobile phone filming, sparking backlash from traditionalists. However, Emma Stenning, the orchestra's chief executive, defended the decision, telling The Times that the orchestra cannot expect young listeners 'to come on the old rules'. Ms Stenning, who is due to meet Mr Bostridge this month, told the paper that some of the audience members were actually reading the translation of the French on their digital program - not recording. To prevent future distraction she said the orchestra was creating a 'dark more' setting on its website to prevent too much light from appearing. And the chief executive said there were also discussions being had about introducing 'quiet carriages' in the concert hall, like those on trains, where phones were not allowed. The CBSO Centre, the home and rehearsal centre of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra High-profile tenor Ian Bostridge (pictured) stopped an ongoing performance at the city's Symphony Hall to lambast audience members who were using their phones To this, Bostridge said: 'We do have an issue attracting new audiences but I don't think this is the way to go. 'And in general I don't think that radically changing the way that concerts happen is a good idea either because the special thing about this sort of concert, classical concerts is it's a space where people come and they concentrate on what's happening onstage. 'I certainly haven't met or spoken to a single musician or singer in the past few days who doesn't think I'm right about this.' 'I hope they [Birmingham's orchestra] will' change their minds. The East Region No. 1-seeded Mustangs defeated the East Region No. 3 Fargo Shanley 25-11, 25-17, 15-25 and 26-24 in the Class A semifinals Friday at the Fargodome. "It's so special to me," said Sheyenne senior outside hitter Alexa Killoran. "Coming back as a senior, it just means so much more." The two-time defending state champion Mustangs will battle West Region No. 1 Bismarck Century in the title match at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23. Century defeated West Region No. 3 Bismarck Legacy in three sets in Friday's other semifinal. Century is a nine-time state champion and was going for its own three-peat in 2022 when Sheyenne defeated the Patriots in five sets for the Mustangs' first state title. Sheyenne head coach Leah Newton said that, as with the Mustangs' other state title-appearing teams, it's been rewarding to see the growth of this team's players throughout the season. "You want it so bad for them," Newton said. "The fact they were able to fight and make that happen is pretty cool." The Mustangs fended off a fourth-set push from the Deacons, who were trying to force a fifth set. Both teams never led by more than two points. Tied at 24-24, Sheyenne scored back-to-back points, with right-side hitter Cora Metcalf delivering the match-winning kill. Killoran said the team focused on remaining calm, but needed to be ready for whatever was thrown its way. "We said, 'Just pretend the score is 0-0,' " Killoran said. "We wanted to come out aggressive every single time the ball was served or touched. We wanted to have that same intensity." The Mustangs erupted offensively in the first set to lead 13-1. Libero Baylor Dinger served three straight aces en route to Killoran's set-sealing kill. Sheyenne trailed throughout the first half of the second set, but a seven-point run turned the tides and the Mustangs gained control at 19-13. Sheyenne closed out the set with a 4-0 run, capped by outside hitter Abby Smithoff's kill. Shanley countered in the third set. Already leading by five, the Deacons rattled off eight-straight points to go ahead 18-6. Outside hitter Katelyn Ommen had multiple kills and an ace in the set. Mustangs middle hitter Reilly Bryant notched a team-high seven kills. Metcalf had five kills and seven blocks, and Dinger aced five serves. Makayla Amundson ended with 19 set assists and Marley Budeau had 18 assists. "We came out with a fiery attitude," Newton said. Ommen led the the Deacons with nine kills, three blocks and 22 digs. Clara Robin and Megan Dietz both had six kills. Ella Stimpson had 26 set assists and 18 digs, and Carly Hulstein had four kills and three blocks. Shanley will face off against Bismarck Legacy in the third-place contest at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23. "We're going to go hard (Saturday) and we're going to finish strong," said Deacons head coach Taylor Preston. The Mustangs remain poised for what the championship match will bring, Newton said. "We're going to have to play tough team ball and be ready," Newton said. "(The team we play) is going to be wanting it just as bad as us." Killoran added: "We need to come out confident and aggressive. Serve the ball super aggressive and just have faith in ourselves and our teammates."

A Modern Lens on an Ancient Institution Developed by an international team of Catholic journalists and researchers led by Vatican expert Edward Pentin and executive director Diane Montagna, the site serves as a comprehensive database for exploring the Sacred College of Cardinals. Supported by Sophia Institute Press and Cardinalis Magazine, this project bridges historical precedent and modern technology to offer a uniquely interactive user experience. The platform provides visitors with a wealth of information, from biographical sketches to analyses of cardinals’ leadership styles in the core roles of sanctifying, governing, and teaching. Users can filter data by geography, age, and ecclesiastical roles, navigate interactive maps, and propose updates to cardinal profiles, making this a living and collaborative resource. Insights into Potential Papal Candidates A particular highlight is the in-depth profiling of 40 prominent cardinals, including those widely regarded as “papabili”—potential successors to Saint Peter. Key figures include: Emerging figures also feature prominently, such as: Notably, African leadership is spotlighted through Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu of Kinshasa, reflecting the Church’s growing focus on the continent. Reviving a Historical Practice While “Collegio Cardinalizio: Una Rassegna” is pioneering in its digital format, its intent echoes historical traditions. Pentin and Montagna noted that centuries ago, detailed biographies of cardinals were meticulously compiled by scribes and shared among diplomatic circles. Today’s platform aims to replicate this depth of knowledge, albeit on a global and accessible scale. Addressing an Emerging Need The initiative responds to the evolving dynamics within the Sacred College under Pope Francis. Many newly appointed cardinals hail from “peripheral” regions and are less familiar to their peers. With fewer regular consistories and limited opportunities for in-person meetings, the cardinals often lack comprehensive insights into each other’s backgrounds and perspectives. This tool seeks to fill that gap, particularly as the conclave nears. “In an age of information and globalization, it’s paradoxical how little the cardinals know about one another,” observed Montagna. “This resource not only enhances transparency but fosters connection among the Church’s highest leaders.” A Vision for the Future As the project evolves, the platform plans to expand its profiles, integrate multilingual options, and continue refining its database to meet the needs of clergy, media professionals, and laypeople alike. Pentin emphasized the enduring value of the project: “While we avoid speculation about papal elections, our aim is to offer a reliable resource that enables informed perspectives. By fostering familiarity among the cardinalate, we hope this platform supports the Church’s leadership in navigating its critical challenges ahead.” Thank you for reading our content. With a new year ahead and the holiday fanfare behind, this is a great time to set money goals, especially if you recently spent a lot on gifts and travel and want to get your finances in shape. You’d be in good company, too — according to a January 2024 survey from the Pew Research Center, of the 30% of Americans who made at least one New Year’s resolution, 61% had a goal that was money-related. Right now, you may be highly motivated to solve every single one of your money issues in the next few months, but daily life is guaranteed to get in the way. Your financial to-do list, once so full of promise, can eventually get stuffed in the back of a drawer while you manage more pressing matters. The vast majority of New Year’s resolutions go unfulfilled. So how can you improve your odds of success? It comes down to accepting that you won’t have the time or energy to complete every task to perfection. Creating a system where you can prioritize, plan ahead and hold yourself accountable can help. Many start by setting a goal to trim frivolous costs, which can certainly be helpful, but there are other ways to make a big difference. Taylor Schult — a certified financial planner and founder of Define Financial, an advisory firm in San Diego — recommends starting with a few overlooked financial tasks. Freezing your credit is a quick, easy way to guard yourself against identity theft. It’s free to do, and you can temporarily lift the freeze when you’re applying for a loan or credit card. Schulte also suggests looking into umbrella insurance , which offers additional coverage beyond what your auto, homeowners and other insurance policies provide. This coverage can spare you from massive out-of-pocket costs in the event you get sued. Basic estate planning, including creating a will, is another thing to put high on your list. Putting off this task can create a major headache for your loved ones if something happens to you unexpectedly. “I know it’s a pain point and it’s often kicked down the road,” Schulte says. Paying attention to your spending is always important, but don’t neglect taking steps to protect your money, yourself and your loved ones. So many money goals are born out of social pressure. You “should” want to save up to own a home, even if you’re happily renting. You “should” sacrifice short-term needs and wants to stash away as much as possible for retirement, even though it leaves you feeling deprived. But money goals should be tied to the things that matter most to you. If they aren’t, you’ll quickly lose interest. “If you don’t know what goals to choose, go back to your values and have them guide the goals you set,” says Eric Roberge, a certified financial planner and founder of Beyond Your Hammock, a financial advisory firm in Boston. You can combine goal-setting with a little planning, so expenses are less likely to creep up on you throughout the year. Think about what expected costs will be coming up in the next six to 12 months, like recurring bills, vacations, anticipated home or car repairs, and other expenses. This approach allows you to set money aside each month to put toward planned costs, as well as longer-term goals. Forgetting your goals can be far too easy, so to make something stick, write it down . It can be as simple as a handwritten list you keep on the fridge, or online calendar reminders that will nudge you every so often. For time-sensitive goals, set deadlines. One tactic is to make multiple lists based on what you need to complete within the next week, month or three months. As time passes and you check off items, you can update the list. Enlist others’ help, too. Weekly or monthly household money meetings are useful if you’re completing financial tasks as a group. Or share your goals with a trusted friend or family member who can serve as an accountability partner. Looping in loved ones can help keep you on track. “We don’t mind letting ourselves down,” Schulte says. “But we hate to let other people down.” It’s easy to get stuck in decision-making mode when trying to pick a high-yield savings account, credit card or possible investments, but eventually, you need to make a good-enough choice . Taking action now can have more of a positive effect on your life than waiting until you’ve painstakingly considered each option. Roberge says that though he’d prefer to optimize every financial decision, he doesn’t because if he did, he wouldn’t get things done. “Everything in moderation is one of the things that I live by,” he says. “Going to extremes in any one thing, at the detriment of other things that are important, doesn’t work long-term.” More From NerdWallet Sara Rathner writes for NerdWallet. Conor McGregor embarked on a social media rampage as he called rape accuser Nikita Hand a "vicious liar" after a civil jury found that the MMA fighter sexually assaulted his accuser in a Dublin hotel in 2018. The 36-year-old was found liable by a jury in the High Court in the Irish capital, as $259,002.55 was awarded to the complainant in the civil trial. The allegations were first made by Ms Hand in 2021, with the verdict eventually delivered after six hours and ten minutes of deliberation from the jury on Nov. 22. This followed an eight-day trial, during which the former UFC champion admitted he had consensual sex with Ms Hand , as well as taking cocaine with her. McGregor having since vowed to appeal against the decision, while it was determined by the jury that a second defendant, James Lawrence, was cleared of any wrongdoing after being accused of assault. McGregor has now taken to social media to give his view on the findings of the civil trial, as posted the following message on Twitter/X: "Justice was served for James Lawrence, yes! Deplorable what they done. Nikita Hand, vicious liar! APPEAL! Every word Conor McGregor rape accuser said outside court after winning assault case Conor McGregor supported by Dee Devlin at court before losing civil court case "Two men falsely accused. One vindicated, the other soon to be! Congrats James Lawrence on absolute exoneration! Twice this heinous accusation was put to you and twice it was shown as FALSE! LIES! "It is absolutely disgraceful what they put you through here. Disgraceful! I look forward to seeing you further vindicate yourself and lambast those responsible in court! We know what happened that night! Everyone present knows, yet it was ignored. Every single statement of persons present on the night was ignored. And they all disputed Nikita’s LIES! "However James they did believe you but just in certain parts for some strange reason. And they apparently did not believe Danielle Kealy at all. Laughable! Also with the damages (60k and 188k, interesting choice of figures it seems they didn’t believe Nikita much either. How could they, her original story was she was gang raped by security and chased from the hotel on foot. "Absolute nonsense. How these lies were accepted, I will never know. A court of feeling and opinion, brainwashed in to people via the mainstream media. Not of fact! The reporting in court a laughing stock to everyone present. As clear as day bias. This is not a court of hard evidence and truth." He added: "It is a kangaroo court of opinions and feelings. We are not done yet. Not by a long shot. No chance. On we fight! Justice and truth will prevail! Appeal! Appeal! Appeal! As well as other. Congrats James! Onwards and upwards!" Speaking after the conclusion of the civil trial, Ms Hand issued a statement as she expressed gratitude for the support she has received during proceedings. She said: "I would like to start off by saying I’m overwhelmed and touched by the support I have received from everybody.” “I want to thank all the women and men out there who have supported me throughout this trial. For every person who reached out to me – a card, a letter, an email, everything – it hasn’t gone unnoticed. Thank you, I really appreciate it so much. Ms Hand added: "I know this has impacted not only my life, my daughter’s, my family and friends tremendously. It’s something that I’ll never forget for the rest of my life. Now that justice has been served, I can now try and move on and look forward to the future with my family and friends and daughter."

Hemant Soren dodges all guns blazed by BJP, retains JharkhandNow that he’s stepped back into the role of being a starter, Dalton Risner is working tirelessly to make sure he’s at his best for the Vikings. ADVERTISEMENT That could be easier said than done in the short term. After starting exclusively at left guard since entering the NFL, Risner got the start at right guard for the first time last weekend with the Vikings playing the Tennessee Titans. Though he said he was extremely grateful for the opportunity, Risner also admitted there’s a learning curve now playing a new position. Not that he’s complaining about his place on the offensive line. “It was awesome,” Risner said. “I’m really happy with how I played. A few things to clean up. I think I’ll only continue to get better.” ADVERTISEMENT After rewatching the game, head coach Kevin O’Connell praised Risner for the way he competed in the trenches. “He showed some of that veteran moxie to win some downs that were some hard downs,” O’Connell said. “There are some things he’ll continue to improve with the speed and physicality of it as he finds his groove.” The biggest hurdle for Risner is getting his mind to think in reverse. He has spent so much time at left guard throughout his career that switching over to right guard has forced him out of his comfort zone. “All of it is flip-flopped,” Risner said. “It’s not an easy process.” ADVERTISEMENT It was made even more difficult last weekend with Risner going up against the combination of star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons and rookie defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat. “That’s about as good of a pair as we’re going to find in the NFL,” offensive coordinator Wes Phillips said. “We knew it was going to be a challenge up front with those guys. There are some things we could’ve done better from a technique perspective. We expect these guys to respond.” That includes Risner as the Vikings prepare for the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field. As he gains more experience at his new position, his hope is that it becomes second nature to him at some point soon. ADVERTISEMENT “I don’t know how many reps it’ll be or how many games it’ll be,” Risner said. I know I’ll consistently get more and more comfortable there.” The only player listed as a non-participant on the injury report was tight end Josh Oliver (wrist/ankle). He hasn’t practiced at all this week, so his availability for this weekend is very much up in the air. ______________________________________________________ This story was written by one of our partner news agencies. They are investigating whether his short-lived martial law decree earlier this month amounted to rebellion. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials, which is leading a joint investigation with police and military authorities into the power grab that lasted only a few hours, confirmed it requested the warrant on Monday. Investigators plan to question Mr Yoon on charges of abuse of authority and orchestrating a rebellion. Mr Yoon has dodged several requests by the joint investigation team and public prosecutors to appear for questioning and has also blocked searches of his offices. It is not clear whether the court will grant the warrant or whether Mr Yoon can be compelled to appear for questioning. Under the country’s laws, locations potentially linked to military secrets cannot be seized or searched without the consent of the person in charge and it is unlikely Mr Yoon will voluntarily leave his residence if he faces detainment. Mr Yoon’s presidential powers were suspended after the National Assembly voted to impeach him on December 14 over his imposition of martial law that lasted only hours but has triggered weeks of political turmoil, halted high-level diplomacy and rattled financial markets. His fate lies with the Constitutional Court, which has begun deliberations on whether to uphold the impeachment and formally remove Mr Yoon from office or reinstate him. Mr Yoon has defended the martial law decree as a necessary act of governance, describing it as a warning against the liberal opposition Democratic Party, which has been bogging down his agenda with its majority in the parliament. Parliament voted last week to also impeach Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who had assumed the role of acting president after Mr Yoon’s powers were suspended, over his reluctance to fill three Constitutional Court vacancies ahead of the court’s review of Mr Yoon’s case. The country’s new interim leader is Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok, who is also finance minister.Bobby Islam Gets Death Threats Over Whatsapp Call

The head of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol ’s governing party on Friday signaled more openness to his removal as president for plunging the key U.S. ally into chaos with a short-lived declaration of martial law , reversing his position the day before an impeachment vote. Han Dong-hoon, leader of the conservative People Power Party (PPP), had earlier said he opposed impeaching Yoon because it would only create more turmoil. But on Friday he said he had learned that Yoon ordered the arrest of prominent politicians in addition to declaring martial law, an order that was lifted six hours later after lawmakers voted to reject it. > Watch NBC Bay Area News 📺 Streaming free 24/7 “In light of these new revelations, I have come to the conclusion that it is necessary to suspend President Yoon from exercising his mandate to protect the South Korea and its people,” Han said, adding that Yoon was “not acknowledging his wrongdoings.” If Yoon continues as president, Han said, “I fear that there will be a great risk of radical actions such as this state of emergency repeating, and he will put South Korea and its people in great danger.” Han’s comments increased the likelihood that Yoon will be impeached when a vote is held around 7 p.m. local time Saturday (5 a.m. ET). The opposition bloc holds 192 of the unicameral legislature’s 300 seats, just under the two-thirds majority needed for the motion to pass. The PPP, which repudiated Yoon’s martial law declaration, had asked him to leave the party but said earlier that it opposed the impeachment motion. Before Han changed his position, at least eight lawmakers from the PPP would have had to break with their party in order for it to pass. Six opposition parties had proposed impeaching Yoon over the martial law order, which banned political activity and censored the media. If Yoon is impeached, he will be suspended from office until the Constitutional Court decides whether to uphold the motion, with a deadline of 180 days. The deeply unpopular Yoon, whose approval rating was already at 19% before the emergency martial law, had blamed opposition lawmakers in his declaration, accusing them of paralyzing the government by seeking the impeachment of multiple government officials and slashing critical funding from next year’s national budget. Opposition lawmakers have expressed concern that Yoon, who has not made any public appearances since lifting the order, might declare martial law a second time if he is impeached or even earlier. “I feel that danger is imminent tonight,” Lee Jae-myung, leader of the liberal opposition Democratic Party, said Friday. “I have a gut feeling that something might happen again tonight or early morning tomorrow.” Acting Defense Minister Kim Seon-ho, whose predecessor resigned this week over his role in the martial law declaration, dismissed such concerns and said that even if Yoon made such an attempt, the Ministry of Defense and the South Korean military “would categorically reject it.” Yoon’s special forces commander, Kwak Jong-keun, also said Friday that it would be impossible for Yoon to declare martial law again “because I will refuse to comply with any such order.” In a call Thursday with his South Korean counterpart, Cho Tae-yul, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed “deep concerns” about the martial law declaration and welcomed the lifting of the order. “The Secretary conveyed his confidence in the democratic resilience of the ROK during this period, and noted he expects the ROK’s democratic process to prevail,” the State Department readout said, using an abbreviation for South Korea’s formal name, the Republic of Korea. Blinken also reaffirmed the “ironclad” nature of the U.S. alliance with South Korea, which it views as an important bulwark against North Korea, China and Russia, and which hosts almost 30,000 American troops. The U.S. confirmed Thursday that meetings of the U.S.-South Korea Nuclear Consultative Group and related tabletop military exercises that were planned in Washington this week had been postponed amid the turmoil in South Korea. Meanwhile, more details emerged of the chaotic hours between Yoon’s declaration of martial law around 10:30 p.m. local time Tuesday and the lifting of the order around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. South Korea’s National Election Commission said Friday that after Yoon declared martial law in a surprise late-night TV address on Tuesday, about 300 troops infiltrated its headquarters and related facilities in what the commission called “a clear violation of the Constitution and the law.” The soldiers confiscated the mobile phones of five people on duty and restricting access to the premises, the commission said, occupying its headquarters for about 3 hours and 20 minutes. “While it has been confirmed that no internal materials were taken by the troops thus far, a thorough and continuous review will be conducted to verify any potential damages,” the commission said in a statement. Kwak, the special forces commander, said some units at the National Election Commission stayed in their vehicles while others “secured and guarded the external perimeter as instructed.” He said they were in the area for about 20 minutes and then moved to withdraw when Kwak issued an order to halt operations at 1:09 a.m., around the same time lawmakers voted to reject the emergency martial law and ordered soldiers to leave the legislature in central Seoul. Kwak said that no one entered the premises, and that there were no plans to detain or obstruct commission personnel. “Basically, I halted the mission before any actions were carried out,” he said. I was talking by phone last week with California’s new senator-elect, Adam Schiff, as he plowed through papers in a temporary basement office of the Capitol in his transition from House member to Congress’s upper chamber — famously, or formerly, “the greatest deliberative body in the world.” More on his feelings about that in a bit. First, as we began our conversation — this was a day before his clownish former House colleague Matt Gaetz dropped out from consideration as attorney general — we had a laugh about the often-ludicrous qualities of so many of the names put forward by the president-elect for his cabinet. “When he was president before” — and before Schiff led an impeachment prosecution against him in the Senate trial — “I had a meeting with him in the Oval Office. And I said, ‘You know, we should work together on infrastructure,’ and I also brought up the high cost of prescription drugs ... He was affable, and personable, and I think the first thing he said to me was, ‘You know, you do a really good job.’ And I think he meant, on TV. Because it echoed something that Jared Kushner told me during his deposition” for the impeachment. “During one of the recesses he came up to me and said, ‘You do a really good job on TV.’ Trump had just attacked me for the very first time, on Twitter. ‘Sleazy Adam Schiff spends too much time on TV,’ and blah blah blah. And I said, ‘Well, apparently your father-in-law doesn’t think so.’ And his response was, ‘Oh, yes he does, and that’s why.’ ... He’s obviously picked a lot of his cabinet by watching them on Fox. And he also watches his adversaries on Fox.” I asked Schiff if he would be able to work with Trump during his second term. “Well, I think he sees political value in attacking me. It’s why I was such a constant feature in his rallies. Even up to the very end, his closing argument was about me — ‘He’s the enemy from within.’ All I can do is do my job. Try to get stuff done in defending our democracy, our rights and freedoms. He can call me whatever he wants. I’m not going to lose focus on core responsibilities.” Back to the difference between being a congressman and a senator. Schiff and the 11 other new incoming senators — six Democrats, six Republicans — just spent the last week in official orientations about how the upper house works. After 20 years in the House, he was at least a bit familiar. But some things are different. “It’s been a combination of briefings from Senate officers and the sergeant at arms — including with our spouses; they wanted us all to get to know each other — about your Washington office, and your district office, and personal security. We would take a meal break and have lunch together. Social interaction is very important. We had other sessions with veteran senators of both parties about things to do, and things not. A main thing seems to be: Don’t just work together and not socialize. Invite people out to dinner. Don’t judge a book by its cover — guys who you know from TV” may be different in real life. I asked about the “greatest deliberative body” idea: “It really seems like a different culture in the Senate,” Schiff said. “There’s a recognition that you can’t get anything done unless you can find a partner on the other side of the aisle. It’s a small place and you can get to know each other well. There is a group of folks in the Senate who don’t want to get anything done. But apart from that group, there’s lots of opportunities to collaborate and deliver and so I’m very excited about it. It’s very entrepreneurial.” “I was worried,” he continued. “I’d been hearing that the character of the Senate was changing — that a number of the bomb throwers in the House had come over — but the climate is very different. There’s a real willingness to say, ‘Hey, we may disagree on this and that, but I know you’re interested in housing, or rural hospitals, so let’s work together.’” Although I didn’t want to get too deep into the weeds on the inevitable question of what’s next for Democrats after they lost the White House, still don’t have the House and lost the Senate, I was still curious about how California’s new senator could work with a guy who rails against him: “This president, given his track record, is going to abuse his office. But my first priority is to get things done. Playing defense is secondary.” Larry Wilson is on the Southern California News Group editorial board. lwilson@scng.com.None

Zelenskiy Accuses Slovak PM Of Wanting To 'Help Putin' Through Gas PaymentsMicrosoft has been working on adding internal and third-party artificial intelligence models to power its flagship AI product Microsoft 365 Copilot , in a bid to diversify from the current underlying technology from OpenAI and reduce costs, sources familiar with the effort told Reuters. ET Year-end Special Reads Gold outshines D-St with 20% returns, but 2025 may be different The year of the pause: How RBI maneuvered its policy in 2024 2024, the year India defeated China's salami-slicing strategy It is the latest effort by Microsoft, which is a major backer of OpenAI, to lessen its dependence on the AI startup - a departure from recent years when Microsoft touted its early access to OpenAI's models. When Microsoft announced 365 Copilot in March 2023, a major selling point was that it used OpenAI's GPT-4 model. Microsoft is also seeking to reduce 365 Copilot's reliance on OpenAI due to concerns about cost and speed for enterprise users, according to the sources, who requested anonymity to discuss private matters. A Microsoft spokesperson said OpenAI continues as the company's partner on frontier models, a term for the most advanced AI models available. The original agreement between the two companies allows the software giant to customise OpenAI's models. "We incorporate various models from OpenAI and Microsoft depending on the product and experience," Microsoft said in a statement. OpenAI declined to comment. Microsoft's leaders, including chief executive officer Satya Nadella , are tracking the efforts closely, the same source added. The move mirrors those of other Microsoft business units which have changed the ways in which they use OpenAI models. GitHub, which Microsoft acquired in 2018, added models from Anthropic and Google in October as alternatives to OpenAI's GPT-4o. Its consumer chatbot Copilot, revamped in October, is now powered by in-house models as well as OpenAI models. Microsoft 365 Copilot, an AI assistant built in to Microsoft's suite of enterprise software including Word and PowerPoint, is still trying to prove its return on investment to enterprises. Microsoft has not shared specific sales data on the number of licenses sold, and there have been concerns about pricing and utility. A survey of 152 information technology companies showed the vast majority of them had not progressed their 365 Copilot initiatives past the pilot stage, research firm Gartner said in August. Still, analysts at BNP Paribas Exane said they have seen an acceleration in adoption, and expect Microsoft to sell 365 Copilot to more than 10 million paid users this year. Microsoft also said in a November blog post that 70% of Fortune 500 companies are using 365 Copilot. DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Ousted Syrian leader Bashar Assad fled to Moscow and received asylum from his longtime ally, Russian media said Sunday, hours after a stunning rebel advance seized control of Damascus and ended his family’s 50 years of iron rule . Thousands of Syrians poured into streets echoing with celebratory gunfire and waved the revolutionary flag in scenes that recalled the early days of the Arab Spring uprising, before a brutal crackdown and the rise of an insurgency plunged the country into a nearly 14-year civil war. The swiftly moving events raised questions about the future of the country and the wider region. “Our approach has shifted the balance of power in the Middle East," President Joe Biden said , crediting action by the U.S. and its allies for weakening Syria’s backers — Russia, Iran and Hezbollah. He called the fall of Assad a “fundamental act of justice” but also a “moment of risk and uncertainty,” and said rebel groups are “saying the right things now” but the U.S. would assess their actions. Russia requested an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council to discuss Syria, according to Dmitry Polyansky, its deputy ambassador to the U.N., in a post on Telegram. The arrival of Assad and his family in Moscow was reported by Russian agencies Tass and RIA, citing an unidentified source at the Kremlin. A spokesman there didn't immediately respond to questions. RIA also said Syrian insurgents had guaranteed the security of Russian military bases and diplomatic posts in Syria. Earlier, Russia said Assad left Syria after negotiations with rebel groups and that he had given instructions to transfer power peacefully. The leader of Syria's biggest rebel faction, Abu Mohammed al-Golani , is poised to chart the country’s future. The former al-Qaida commander cut ties with the group years ago and says he embraces pluralism and religious tolerance. His Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS, is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the U.N. In his first public appearance since fighters entered the Damascus suburbs Saturday, al-Golani visited the Umayyad Mosque and described Assad's fall as “a victory to the Islamic nation.” Calling himself by his given name, Ahmad al-Sharaa, and not his nom de guerre, he said Assad had made Syria “a farm for Iran’s greed.” The rebels face the daunting task of healing bitter divisions in a country ravaged by war and split among armed factions. Turkey-backed opposition fighters are battling U.S.-allied Kurdish forces in the north, and the Islamic State group is still active in remote areas. Syrian state television broadcast a rebel statement saying Assad had been overthrown and all prisoners had been released. They urged people to preserve the institutions of “the free Syrian state,” and announced a curfew in Damascus from 4 p.m. to 5 a.m. An online video purported to show rebels freeing dozens of women at the notorious Saydnaya prison, where rights groups say thousands were tortured and killed . At least one small child was seen among them. “This happiness will not be completed until I can see my son out of prison and know where is he,” said one relative, Bassam Masr. "I have been searching for him for two hours. He has been detained for 13 years.” Rebel commander Anas Salkhadi appeared on state TV and sought to reassure religious and ethnic minorities, saying: “Syria is for everyone, no exceptions. Syria is for Druze, Sunnis, Alawites, and all sects.” “We will not deal with people the way the Assad family did," he added. Celebrations in the capital Damascus residents prayed in mosques and celebrated in squares, calling, “God is great.” People chanted anti-Assad slogans and honked car horns. Teenage boys picked up weapons apparently discarded by security forces and fired into the air. Soldiers and police fled their posts and looters broke into the Defense Ministry. Families wandered the presidential palace, walking by damaged portraits of Assad. Other parts of the capital were empty and shops were closed. “It’s like a dream. I need someone to wake me up," said opposition fighter Abu Laith, adding the rebels were welcomed in Damascus with “love.” Rebels stood guard at the Justice Ministry, where Judge Khitam Haddad said he and colleagues were protecting documents. Outside, residents sought information about relatives who disappeared under Assad. The rebels “have felt the pain of the people,” said one woman, giving only her first name, Heba. She worried about possible revenge killings by the rebels, many of whom appeared to be underage. Syria’s historically pro-government newspaper al-Watan called it “a new page for Syria. We thank God for not shedding more blood.” It added that media workers should not be blamed for publishing past government statements ordered from above. A statement from the Alawite sect that formed the core of Assad's base called on young Syrians to be “calm, rational and prudent and not to be dragged into what tears apart the unity of our country.” The rebels mainly come from the Sunni Muslim majority in Syria, which also has sizable Druze, Christian and Kurdish communities. In Qamishli in the northeast, a Kurdish man slapped a statue of the late leader Hafez Assad with his shoe. Calls for an orderly transition The rebel advances since Nov. 27 were the largest in recent years, and saw the cities of Aleppo, Hama and Homs fall within days as the Syrian army melted away. The road to Damascus from the Lebanese border was littered with military uniforms and charred armored vehicles. Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, which provided crucial support to Assad, abandoned him as they reeled from other conflicts. The end of Assad’s rule was a major blow to Iran and its proxies, already weakened by conflict with Israel . Iran said Syrians should decide their future “without destructive, coercive, foreign intervention.” The Iranian Embassy in Damascus was ransacked after apparently having been abandoned. Hossein Akbari, Iran’s ambassador to Syria, said it was “effectively impossible” to help the Syrian government after it admitted the insurgents' military superiority. Speaking on Iranian state media from an undisclosed location, he said Syria's government decided Saturday night to hand over power peacefully. “When the army and the people could not resist, it was a good decision to let go to prevent bloodshed and destruction,” Akbari said, adding that some of his colleagues left Syria before sunrise. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking on state TV, said there were concerns about the “possibility of civil war, disintegration of Syria, total collapse and turning Syria into a shelter for terrorists.” Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi Jalali has said the government was ready to “extend its hand” to the opposition and turn its functions over to a transitional government. A video on Syrian opposition media showed armed men escorting him from his office to a hotel. The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, has called for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” The Gulf nation of Qatar, a key regional mediator, hosted an emergency meeting of foreign ministers and top officials from eight countries with interests in Syria late Saturday, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Turkey. Majed al-Ansari, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, said they agreed on the need “to engage all parties on the ground," including the HTS, and that the main concern is “stability and safe transition.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli troops had seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights established in 1974, saying it was to protect Israeli residents after Syrian troops abandoned positions. Israel’s military later warned residents of five southern Syria communities to stay home for their safety, and didn’t respond to questions. Israel captured the Golan in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed it. The international community, except for the U.S., views it as occupied, and the Arab League on Sunday condemned what it called Israel’s efforts to take advantage of Assad’s downfall to occupy more territory. It seems the Ohio State Buckeyes weren’t done throwing hands even after their matchup against the Michigan Wolverines ended this Saturday. Despite facing the favored Buckeyes on the road, the Wolverines kept their win streak alive against their Big Ten rivals. The 2023 CFP champions even managed to knock Ohio State out of the B1G Championship, but it was when they went to demonstrate their territorial conquest that trouble ensued. After defeating the Buckeyes for the fourth straight year, 13-10, Michigan players attempted to plant a flag (with a bold M on it) in the middle of the field. It’s a tradition often seen in CFB games, where the winning team plants the flag to assert dominance over their opponents. Linebacker Kenneth Murray did the same to Ohio State back in 2017, much to the dismay of the fans. But this week, it wasn’t the fans who seemed upset—it was also the Buckeyes squad, who appeared furious. It started with edge rusher Derrick Moore carrying the flag to midfield, which led to some back-and-forth. Then punches were thrown, and kicks too. Both sides landed some solid jabs, with several players getting maced by the authorities. And all of this fight was broadcast on live TV — something Deion Sanders Jr. (son of Deion Sanders) seemed to appreciate. As someone who specializes in recording and sharing moments with the world, he couldn’t help but admire how the camera crew captured “the high wide angle so we can enjoy the full fight.” Another person who seemed to enjoy the fight was Vikings QB JJ McCarthy. Having won the national championship with U-M last year, he’s all too familiar with how intense things can get when the team wins. He expressed his appreciation for the celebration—and perhaps the fight—as part of the game. However, not many viewed the post-game fight as part of the game. Robert Griffin III, for example, shared a brief clip of the altercation and wrote, “No place for this in the game. EVER” Skip Bayless, too, wasn’t happy with how things transpired after the game. However, he mentioned that while planting flags isn’t his style, what the Buckeyes did (throw punches) was justified. He was rather pleased that the home team managed to snatch the flag away. According to Zach Shaw of CBS Sports , Buckeyes DE Jack Sawyer grabbed the flag from Moore’s hands, ripped it off the pole, dropped it to the ground, and stepped on it. It’s quite the image if you want to picture it.

Robotics is becoming more and more popular with each passing year as demand for efficient and cost-effective solutions rises. With robotic technology offering convenience and improved safety and the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning, allowing for more advanced robotic capabilities, it's no surprise that the global robotics market is expected to surpass $200 billion by the end of this decade . Another evidence of robotics' growing usage is the global installation of industrial robots, which reached 541,302 in 2023, the second-highest annual installation in history. The record was made the year before that when 552,946 units were installed . With that, the total number of operational robots has now reached a new high of around 4.3 million units worldwide, with Asia leading this growth at 70%, followed by Europe at 17%, and then America at 10%. As for robot manufacturing, Japan is in the lead, accounting for a 46% market share. According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), robotics growth will accelerate in 2025 and will continue at this speed in the years to come. Now, when it comes to industries that are driving robotics' massive expansion, automotive is in the lead, with electronics, metal and machinery, waste management, agriculture, retail, construction, and food services being other sectors utilizing robots. Robots in Healthcare While robots are being used across industries, there is one sector where it has a far greater and more positive impact, and that's medicine. The global medical robotic systems market is actually fast-growing, and it is estimated that its size will increase from $16 billion in 2024 to $33.8 billion by 2029. Robots are being used in all areas of healthcare, from supplying medications and assisting in rehabilitation to helping with diagnostics, surgery, and drug delivery. For instance, robotic arms are used for mixing, dispensing, counting, and inspecting, while programmed supply robots are used to deliver items to specific locations. These autonomous mobile robots are simplifying routine tasks for healthcare professionals by reducing the physical demands on human workers and addressing staffing shortages. They even keep track of inventory and make sure all the supplies are always in stock when needed, in addition to sanitizing rooms and getting them ready for patients. By taking up all these routine tasks, autonomous mobile robots allow medical staff to focus on patients and their specific needs that can't be met by the technology. The robot called Tug from Aethon is one such example that comes with the capability to move through challenging conditions to make safe deliveries to where they are needed and when they are needed. These robots also help create a safe work environment by handling the tasks of cleaning, disinfection, and transporting supplies to hospitals and regions where there's a risk of pathogen exposure. According to the CDC, about one in 31 hospital patients has at least one healthcare-associated infection on a given day. This is due to hospitals' inability to disinfect rooms completely. To help address such problems, automated robots like FDA-authorized Xenex are being built that use pulsed UV rays to sterilize hospital rooms in just minutes. Technological innovation has also led to advanced surgical-assistance robots that help surgeons achieve greater speed and more accuracy when performing complex operations. A multi-armed wonderbot called da Vinci Surgical System is one such robot used to make surgery less invasive, reduce surgical errors, and provide enhanced control. The Cyberknife is another one that treats cancers by delivering radiation therapy to tumors with extreme precision. Then there are pharmaceutical robots, which are gaining a lot of traction because of the aging population and those with chronic diseases that require ongoing medication and precision treatment. By automating critical processes that are usually done manually and are time-consuming, pharmaceutical robots further help improve quality and precision. Robots for Drug Delivery Driven by technological advancements and the increasing need for automation in drug development and patient care, robots are making drug delivery more efficient and precise, improving patient care. Companies are developing micro and nanorobots that move independently to deliver drugs to hard-to-reach areas powered by chemical reactions or external sources like light, electric fields, or magnetic fields. By targeting disease sites, these robots improve therapeutic efficacy and reduce side effects. A couple of years ago, a team of researchers developed MANiACs, which are tiny tumbling robots having magnetic nanorods encased in a soft spherical shell. Back in 2022, a Stanford mechanical engineer built multifunctional wireless robots for the same. And just a couple of months ago, NTU Singapore researchers developed grain-sized soft robots for targeted drug delivery. The robot, which is made with magnetic microparticles and controlled using magnetic fields, can transport as many as four different drugs and release them in reprogrammable doses and orders. This research was built on the team's previous work that involved magnetically controlled miniature robots that can grip tiny objects and swim through tight spaces, among other complex movements. Taking inspiration from a 1960s sci-fi movie, ‘Fantastic Voyage,' where a crew shrunk to cell size to repair damage in a scientist's brain, the research is bringing imagination to reality. The highly dexterous robot, when tested in lab experiments, moved at speeds of between 0.30 mm and 16.5 mm per second, successfully delivered drugs in more challenging environments, and even after eight hours of constant movement, showed minimal drug leakage. The NTU team is now looking into making these robots even smaller so they can ultimately be used to treat bladder cancer, brain tumors, and colorectal cancer. Microbots: Tiny Robots That Revolutionize Precision Medicine Microrobots utilize miniaturized sensors and actuators to carry out actions that they are programmed to do. Their micron size makes them easy to use in environments that have been traditionally too intricate and difficult to reach. This ability makes these robots invaluable for minimally invasive surgery, disease diagnosis, detoxification, and precision drug delivery. However, they are not without their challenges in terms of their efficacy and localization through deep tissue. Another major issue is that they have proved to be m ore show than substance. Over the past two decades, several versions of micro- or nanorobots have been released, but so far, their applications in living systems have been rather limited. Then there's the fact that moving objects with high accuracy in complex biofluids like saliva, urine, and blood is also pretty complex. Other obstacles for nanorobots include real-time detection within the body and achieving precise remote control for targeted therapy. Also, when designing these microbots, the question arises of whether they should be tethered or untethered. For an untethered microrobot to operate effectively in the human body, it must have steady propulsion through biofluids, strong payload capacity, high biocompatibility to avoid surgical removal, enhanced imaging for real-time visualization, and precise targeting. Here, acoustically actuated robots are showing substantial potential due to the benefits of deep-tissue penetration, non-invasive operation, rapid response, robust propulsive forces, and safety. So, researchers from Caltech introduced BAM — a hydrogel-based, imaging-guided, bioresorbable acoustic microrobot that can navigate the human body with high stability. BAM is not a metal humanoid or bio-mimicking robot, it is a tiny bubble-like sphere. According to co-corresponding author of the paper on bots, Wei Gao, who's a professor of medical engineering at Caltech and Heritage Medical Research Institute Investigator: “We have designed a single platform that can address all of these problems.” In their research , the scientists noted that when tested, the bots helped the team successfully deliver therapeutics that decreased the size of bladder tumors in mice. “Rather than putting a drug into the body and letting it diffuse everywhere, now we can guide our microrobots directly to a tumor site and release the drug in a controlled and efficient way.” – Gao As BAM technology progresses, the study anticipates the device will make a substantial impact on the healthcare sector and patient care. The Design & Development of BAM The new microrobot, which has spherical microstructures, is made of a hydrogel called poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate. Hydrogel starts in liquid or resin form, but when the network of polymers within them becomes cross-linked, it becomes solid. Having such composition and microstructure allows hydrogels to retain large amounts of fluid, helping the team overcome the problem of robots being biocompatible. Meanwhile, additive manufacturing fabrication enables the outer sphere to carry the therapeutic cargo to a target site within the body. The microstructures and hydrogel recipe were made with the help of Julia R. Greer, the co-corresponding author, and Ruben F. and Donna Mettler, Professor of Materials Science, Mechanics, and Medical Engineering. For this, her group made use of two-photon polymerization (TPP) lithography. In this 3D printing technique, a laser is used to create complex structures. Here, ultra-fast pulses of infrared laser light are used to selectively cross-link photosensitive polymers while following a specific design . The TPP lithography basically builds a high-resolution structure layer by layer, allowing the team to achieve complex forms and high precision. The group was able to print (write) microstructures that are roughly 30 microns in diameter, which is the same as human hair. Talking about the sphere shape of the structure, Greer noted that it is “very complicated to write” and requires having a knowledge of “certain tricks of the trade to keep the spheres from collapsing on themselves,” so it's a huge achievement that the team was able to create them. “We were able to not only synthesize the resin that contains all the biofunctionalization and all the medically necessary elements, but we were able to write them in a precise spherical shape with the necessary cavity.” – Greer This is the inner structure of the sphere, and as for its outer structure, the microrobots will incorporate magnetic nanoparticles and the therapeutic drug within it in their final form. The magnetic nanoparticles allow the researchers to control the robots and direct them to a location that they want using an external magnetic field. And when they finally reach the target, the robots stay in that location, and the drug spreads out passively. When it comes to the microstructure's exterior, the team further designed it to be hydrophilic, which means it is attracted to water. Doing so makes sure that the individual robots do not stick together as they travel through the body. Unlike the microrobot's exterior surface, the inner surface is not made hydrophilic but rather hydrophobic because it needs to capture an air bubble, which is easy to dissolve. To build a hybrid microrobot whose exterior attracts water while the interior repels water, the team designed a chemical modification. This modification involved two steps; the first one involved affixing long-chain carbon molecules to the hydrogel, effectively making it hydrophobic. In the second step, the scientists utilize the oxygen plasma etching technique to remove the carbon structures from the exterior, making the outside hydrophilic. Calling their chemical modification “one of the key innovations of this project,” Gao stated that the asymmetric surface modification was what really allowed them “to use many robots and still trap bubbles for a prolonged period of time in biofluids, such as urine or serum.” As per the team's demonstration, this technique allowed bubbles to last for several days as opposed to a few minutes otherwise. Now, just why do we need to trap these bubbles in the first place? Well, having trapped bubbles is necessary to move the robots and to keep track of them with real-time imaging. To enable the microrobot to move forward, the researchers have the sphere with two cylinder-like openings. The team found that having two openings allowed the robots to move in various biofluids at greater speeds than a single opening. When exposed to an ultrasound field, the bubbles within the robot vibrate, causing the fluid surrounding it to stream away from it, propelling the robot through the fluid. The bubble, which is trapped in each microstructure, acts as a great ultrasound imaging contrast agent, allowing for bots' real-time monitoring in vivo. The team then put the microrobots on trial as a drug-delivery tool in mice having bladder tumors. In 22 days, four deliveries of therapeutics were made with the help of microrobots. These deliveries were found to be more successful in reducing the size of tumors than the ones that didn't make use of robots. According to Gao: “We think this is a very promising platform for drug delivery and precision surgery. Looking to the future, we could evaluate using this robot as a platform to deliver different types of therapeutic payloads or agents for different conditions. And in the long term, we hope to test this in humans.” Click here to learn about sticky metal that could have widespread application in robotics. In a recent shocking revelation by Indonesian media, it has been uncovered that the Indonesian national football team has three more potential "secretly-naturalized" players in the pipeline. One of these players reportedly hails from Manchester United, adding a significant twist to the ongoing naturalization saga that has gripped the footballing world.

ATLANTA — As she checked into a recent flight to Mexico for vacation, Teja Smith chuckled at the idea of joining another Women’s March on Washington . As a Black woman, she just couldn’t see herself helping to replicate the largest act of resistance against then-President Donald Trump’s first term in January 2017. Even in an election this year where Trump questioned his opponent’s race , held rallies featuring racist insults and falsely claimed Black migrants in Ohio were eating residents’ pets , he didn’t just win a second term. He became the first Republican in two decades to clinch the popular vote, although by a small margin. “It’s like the people have spoken and this is what America looks like,” said Smith, the Los Angeles-based founder of the advocacy social media agency, Get Social. “And there’s not too much more fighting that you’re going to be able to do without losing your own sanity.” After Trump was declared the winner over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris , many politically engaged Black women said they were so dismayed by the outcome that they were reassessing — but not completely abandoning — their enthusiasm for electoral politics and movement organizing. Black women often carry much of the work of getting out the vote in their communities. They had vigorously supported the historic candidacy of Harris, who would have been the first woman of Black and South Asian descent to win the presidency. Harris’ loss spurred a wave of Black women across social media resolving to prioritize themselves, before giving so much to a country that over and over has shown its indifference to their concerns. AP VoteCast , a survey of more than 120,000 voters, found that 6 in 10 Black women said the future of democracy in the United States was the single most important factor for their vote this year, a higher share than for other demographic groups. But now, with Trump set to return to office in two months, some Black women are renewing calls to emphasize rest, focus on mental health and become more selective about what fight they lend their organizing power to. “America is going to have to save herself,” said LaTosha Brown, the co-founder of the national voting rights group Black Voters Matter. She compared Black women’s presence in social justice movements as “core strategists and core organizers” to the North Star, known as the most consistent and dependable star in the galaxy because of its seemingly fixed position in the sky. People can rely on Black women to lead change, Brown said, but the next four years will look different. “That’s not a herculean task that’s for us. We don’t want that title. ... I have no goals to be a martyr for a nation that cares nothing about me,” she said. AP VoteCast paints a clear picture of Black women’s concerns. Black female voters were most likely to say that democracy was the single most important factor for their vote, compared to other motivators such as high prices or abortion. More than 7 in 10 Black female voters said they were “very concerned” that electing Trump would lead the nation toward authoritarianism, while only about 2 in 10 said this about Harris. About 9 in 10 Black female voters supported Harris in 2024, according to AP VoteCast, similar to the share that backed Democrat Joe Biden in 2020. Trump received support from more than half of white voters, who made up the vast majority of his coalition in both years. Like voters overall, Black women were most likely to say the economy and jobs were the most important issues facing the country, with about one-third saying that. But they were more likely than many other groups to say that abortion and racism were the top issues, and much less likely than other groups to say immigration was the top issue. Despite those concerns, which were well-voiced by Black women throughout the campaign, increased support from young men of color and white women helped expand Trump’s lead and secured his victory. Politically engaged Black women said they don’t plan to continue positioning themselves in the vertebrae of the “backbone” of America’s democracy. The growing movement prompting Black women to withdraw is a shift from history, where they are often present and at the forefront of political and social change. One of the earliest examples is the women’s suffrage movement that led to ratification in 1920 of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution , which gave women the right to vote. Black women, however, were prevented from voting for decades afterward because of Jim Crow-era literacy tests, poll taxes and laws that blocked the grandchildren of slaves from voting. Most Black women couldn’t vote until the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Black women were among the organizers and counted among the marchers brutalized on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama, during the historic march in 1965 from Selma to Montgomery that preceded federal legislation. Decades later, Black women were prominent organizers of the Black Lives Matter movement in response to the deaths of Black Americans at the hands of police and vigilantes. In his 2024 campaign, Trump called for leveraging federal money to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs in government programs and discussions of race, gender or sexual orientation in schools. His rhetoric on immigration, including false claims that Black Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating cats and dogs, drove support for his plan to deport millions of people . Tenita Taylor, a Black resident of Atlanta who supported Trump this year, said she was initially excited about Harris’ candidacy. But after thinking about how high her grocery bills have been, she feels that voting for Trump in hopes of finally getting lower prices was a form of self-prioritization. “People say, ‘Well, that’s selfish, it was gonna be better for the greater good,’’’ she said. “I’m a mother of five kids. ... The things that (Democrats) do either affect the rich or the poor.” Some of Trump’s plans affect people in Olivia Gordon’s immediate community, which is why she struggled to get behind the “Black women rest” wave. Gordon, a New York-based lawyer who supported the Party for Socialism and Liberation’s presidential nominee, Claudia de la Cruz, worries about who may be left behind if the 92% of Black women voters who backed Harris simply stopped advocating. “We’re talking millions of Black women here. If millions of Black women take a step back, it absolutely leaves holes, but for other Black women,” she said. “I think we sometimes are in the bubble of if it’s not in your immediate circle, maybe it doesn’t apply to you. And I truly implore people to understand that it does.” Nicole Lewis, an Alabama-based therapist who specializes in treating Black women’s stress, said she’s aware that Black women withdrawing from social impact movements could have a fallout. But she also hopes that it forces a reckoning for the nation to understand the consequences of not standing in solidarity with Black women. “It could impact things negatively because there isn’t that voice from the most empathetic group,” she said. “I also think it’s going to give other groups an opportunity to step up. ... My hope is that they do show up for themselves and everyone else.” Brown said a reckoning might be exactly what the country needs, but it’s a reckoning for everyone else. Black women, she said, did their job when they supported Harris in droves in hopes they could thwart the massive changes expected under Trump. “This ain’t our reckoning,” she said. “I don’t feel no guilt.” AP polling editor Amelia Thomson DeVeaux and Associated Press writer Linley Sanders in Washington contributed to this report. In morning trade, the semiconductor company's shares are up 14% to 27.5 cents. Why is the Brainchip share price rocketing? Investors have been bidding the company's shares higher today after it a new license agreement. According to the release, Frontgrade Gaisler has licensed the company's Akida 1.0 Neuromorphic AI IP for incorporation into its space-grade, fault-tolerant, system-on-chip solutions for hardware AI acceleration across multiple product generations. Frontgrade Gaisler is a Swedish provider of radiation-hardened microprocessors for space applications The release notes that this builds on their collaboration announced earlier this year to evaluate Brainchip Akida silicon devices. Management believes this commercial licence agreement paves the way for artificial intelligence (AI) chips to be deployed in space. Its notes that the Akida neuromorphic computing solution was selected based upon providing real time data stream processing with resiliency, autonomy, and accuracy at the lowest power, mass, and volume. Successful evaluation Brainchip revealed that the licence agreement progressed after a successful evaluation engagement with Frontgrade Gaisler where the two parties and the European Space Agency (ESA) collaborated to evaluate the Akida neuromorphic processor silicon on insulator samples and software. The ESA's microelectronics and data handling engineer, Laurent Hili, commented: While many fields no doubt can benefit from neuromorphic computing, one essential area is computer vision applications where current FPGA or GPU technologies do not bring satisfactory results for edge deployments when considering mass, volume and power constraints. This program has demonstrated the superiority of neuromorphic technology through several on-going activities with satellites, IP and component suppliers such as Frontgrade Gaisler and BrainChip. Agreement terms The release reveals that under this new commercial Akida IP licence agreement, Brainchip is entitled to receive a 10% royalty on the net sale price of Frontgrade's first licensed product. Furthermore, after 24 months Frontgrade has the option to purchase additional software maintenance for $125,000 per year. Frontgrade also has the option to obtain an additional Akida 1.0 IP licence for one more licensed product for a fee of 150,000 euros or a royalty of 15% of the net sale price of the second licensed product. However, Brainchip warned that it is currently unable to estimate potential future royalty revenues. Brainchip CEO, Sean Hehir, said: This collaboration with Frontgrade Gaisler to licence Akida IP for implementation into space SoCs represents an important step in space-based AI deployments, turning into reality what once was considered unattainable. We are pleased to expand on our trusted relationship with Frontgrade as they push the boundaries of space computing.

Imagine a world where food on grocery store shelves is ranked by its healthiness, with simple, research-backed scores. In some countries, that world already exists. Nutrient profiling systems, or NPSs, support clear front-of-package labels that assess food quality based on nutrient content . Nutri-Score in France is a rainbow-colored system grading foods from A to E. Health Star Rating in Australia is a five-star system rating foods in half-star increments. And the Traffic Light System in the U.K. labels nutrient levels as green, yellow or red. In contrast, the U.S. lacks a front-of-package ranking system for food. Food Compass was recently developed out of Tufts University to help address this gap and shortcomings in other systems. But it uses nutritional information not currently available for most foods and consumers. As a gastroenterologist and physician-scientist , I focus on making the latest microbiome and nutrition data more accessible to the public. Drawing on this research, I developed Nutrient Consume Score, or NCS , which rates foods from 1 to 100 using nutritional information available for all foods and incorporates factors important for a healthy microbiome. But how do nutrient profiling systems work? And how do they compare to other nutrition guides for consumers? Nutrient ciphers Each nutrient profiling system uses different scoring algorithms , but most assign positive points to nutrients and foods that are typically underconsumed, such as fiber, fruits and vegetables. Conversely, negative points are given to overconsumed nutrients like sugar, saturated fat and sodium, which are often added to processed foods. These points are combined into a single score: higher scores indicate healthier foods, while lower scores indicate less healthy options. For example, kale—rich in fiber, potassium and unsaturated fats , while low in sugar, sodium and saturated fats—would earn a high score. In contrast, Twinkies, which are high in sugar, sodium and saturated fats, but low in fiber, potassium and unsaturated fats, would receive a low score. A food like black olives, high in fiber but also high in sodium, would fall somewhere in between. Nutrient profiling systems work similarly to the Nutrition Facts labels on the back or sides of food packages in helping consumers make informed choices. These labels provide information about a food's nutrient content, including calories, macronutrients, and key vitamins and minerals. The values are determined through laboratory analysis and nutrient databases based on standardized serving sizes regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. But NPSs differ in that they combine nutrition information into a single actionable score. This means you don't have to spend time deciphering Nutrition Facts labels, which are often in small print and can be confusing to interpret. Ultraprocessed profiling Nutrient profiling system algorithms are all quite similar in their high ranking of unprocessed foods—beans, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables and whole grains—and low ranking of processed foods like hot dogs, soft drinks, cakes and cookies. They help people rebalance their diets that have been skewed by food processing, or the degree to which the ingredients have been altered. They complement the NOVA classification system developed by researchers at the University of São Paulo, which categorizes foods based on their level of processing. This system introduced the term " ultra-processed foods ," which are foods that have undergone significant industrial processing and contain ingredients not typically found in home cooking. While NOVA has linked ultra-processed foods to poor health outcomes like obesity, worse mental health, cancer and early death, it treats all such foods equally, overlooking differences like amount of sugar, sodium and other additives. Nutrient profile systems help provide nuance by identifying healthier options within the ultra-processed category. For example, plant-based milks, such as almond or soy milk, may be classified as ultra-processed under the NOVA system, but they can have relatively higher NPS scores if they contain minimal added sugars and salt. Ratios and bioactives in balance While nutrient profiling systems can be useful for choosing healthier options, current systems have limitations. They don't always align perfectly with other research , often overlook the bioactive chemicals that regulate the microbiome and body processes, and may rely on incomplete data. Current systems also don't account for the caloric and health effects of alcohol. The Nutrient Consume Score I designed aims to address these gaps by incorporating these neglected components of food. For example, it uses food categories as proxies for areas with limited data, including bioactive compounds like polyphenols, omega-3 fats and fermentable fibers . Proxies for bioactive compounds found in unprocessed foods—such as fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, nuts and seeds—are integrated into the score's core algorithm, which uses nutrient ratios to measure the degree of food processing. Nutrient ratios —including carbohydrate-to-fiber, saturated fat-to-unsaturated fat and sodium-to-potassium—reflect the natural balance of nutritional content of the cells in unprocessed foods, which research has shown correlate with cardiometabolic health . For example, the cell walls of plants provide structural strength and are rich in fiber, while their energy vesicles store carbohydrates. Fiber reduces sugar absorption and is fermented into the compound butyrate , which maintains blood sugar and regulates appetite . The fat profiles of unprocessed foods are similar to the fat composition in cell membranes . Saturated fat-to-unsaturated fat ratios capture how different types of fat , affect inflammation and weight. Finally, the potassium-to-sodium ratio reflects the natural function of cell membrane pumps , which concentrate potassium inside cells while transporting sodium out. This affects blood pressure as well as the microbiome and metabolic health. Research currently under peer review shows that the Nutrient Consume Score compares favorably with other systems. Derived from nutrition data from nearly 5,000 Americans, NCS sores are linked to blood pressure, waist circumference and weight. NCS has also been incorporated into a smartphone app intended for public use, currently in beta testing . Empowering smart choices While nutrient profiling systems are a promising tool for healthier food choices, they come with important caveats. Most studies testing how well they work focus on how two factors relate to each other rather than whether one directly causes the other. Correlation doesn't prove causation. Further studies are needed to assess whether these systems influence buying habits, consumption trends, and health outcomes like weight and blood pressure. Additionally, individual dietary needs can vary, and personalized algorithms could help refine these scores for tailored recommendations. Despite these considerations, nutrient profiling systems are promising tools to combat rising rates of metabolic disease. Their use in Europe demonstrates their potential to shift consumer purchasing habits and inspire food companies to create healthier products. Americans may one day see similar front-of-package labels in the U.S. Until then, smartphone technologies can offer a practical way to help consumers make smarter choices today. UNITY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The search for a woman who is believed to have fallen into a sinkhole in western Pennsylvania shifted to a recovery effort after two treacherous days of digging through mud and rock produced no signs of life, authorities said Wednesday. Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson Trooper Steve Limani said during a news conference that authorities no longer believe they will find 64-year-old Elizabeth Pollard alive, but the search for her remains continues. “We’ve had no signs of any form of life or anything” to make rescuers think they should “continue to try and push and rush and push the envelope, to be aggressive with the potential of risking harm to other people,” Limani said. He noted oxygen levels below ground were insufficient. Emergency crews and others have tried to locate Pollard for two days. Her relatives reported her missing early Tuesday and her vehicle with her unharmed 5-year-old granddaughter inside was found about two hours later, near the sinkhole above a long closed, crumbling mine. Rescue workers continue to search for Elizabeth Pollard, who is believed to have disappeared in a sinkhole while looking for her cat, Wednesday in Marguerite, Pa. “We feel like we failed,” Limani said of the decision to change the status of the effort from a rescue to a recovery. “It’s tough.” Limani praised the crews who went into the abandoned mine to help remove material in the search for Pollard in the village of Marguerite, about 40 miles east of Pittsburgh.. “They would come out of there head to toe covered in mud, exhausted. And while they were getting pulled up, the next group’s getting dropped in. And there was one after the next after the next,” Limani said. Authorities said earlier that the roof of the mine collapsed in several places and was not stable. “We did get, you know, where we wanted, where we thought that she was at. We’ve been to that spot," Pleasant Unity Fire Chief John Bacha, the incident's operations officer, said earlier Wednesday. “What happened at that point, I don’t know, maybe the slurry of mud pushed her one direction. There were several different seams of that mine, shafts that all came together where this happened at.” Searchers used electronic devices and cameras as surface digging continued with the use of heavy equipment, Bacha said. In coming days, they plan to greatly widen the surface hole, with winter weather forecast in the region. Rescue workers search through the night in a sinkhole for Elizabeth Pollard, who disappeared while looking for her cat, Tuesday in Marguerite, Pa. Sinkholes occur in the area because of subsidence from coal mining activity. Rescuers used water to break down and remove clay and dirt from the mine, which has been closed since the 1950s. Crews lowered a pole camera with a sensitive listening device into the hole, but it detected nothing. Another camera lowered into the hole showed what could be a shoe about 30 feet below the surface, Limani said Tuesday. Searchers also deployed drones and thermal imaging equipment to no avail. Pollard's family called police about 1 a.m. Tuesday to say she had not been seen since going out at about 5 p.m. Monday to search for Pepper, her cat. The temperature dropped well below freezing that night. Limani said the searchers met with her family before announcing the shift from rescue to recovery. Pollard's son, Axel Hayes, described her as a happy woman who liked going out to have fun. She and her husband adopted Hayes and his twin brother when they were infants. She used to work at Walmart but recently was not employed. Hayes called Pollard “a great person overall, a great mother” who “never really did anybody wrong.” He said at one point Pollard had about 10 cats. “Every cat that she’s ever come in contact with, she has a close bond with them,” Hayes said. The top of a sinkhole is seen Tuesday in the village of Marguerite, Pa., where rescuers searched for a woman who disappeared. Police said they found Pollard's car parked behind Monday's Union Restaurant in Marguerite, about 20 feet from the sinkhole. Hunters and restaurant workers in the area said they had not noticed the manhole-size opening in the hours before Pollard disappeared, leading rescuers to speculate the sinkhole was new. Pollard lived in a small neighborhood across the street from where her car and granddaughter were found by state police. It's unclear what happened to the cat. In an era of rapid technological advancement and environmental change, American agriculture is undergoing a revolution that reaches far beyond the farm gate. From the food on consumer plates to the economic health of rural communities, the transformation of U.S. farming practices is reshaping the nation's landscape in ways both visible and hidden. LandTrust explores how these changes impact everyone, whether they live in the heartland or the heart of the city. The image of the small family farm, while still a reality for many, is increasingly giving way to larger, more technologically advanced operations. According to the USDA, the number of farms in the U.S. has fallen from 6.8 million in 1935 to about 2 million today, with the average farm size growing from 155 acres to 444 acres. This shift has profound implications for rural communities and the food system as a whole. Despite these changes, diversity in farming practices is on the rise. A landmark study published in Science , involving data from over 2,000 farms across 11 countries, found that diversifying farmland simultaneously delivers environmental and social benefits. This challenges the longstanding idea that practices boosting biodiversity must come at a cost to yields and food security. The adoption of precision agriculture technologies is transforming how farmers manage their land and resources. GPS-guided tractors, drone surveillance, and AI-powered crop management systems are becoming commonplace on many farms. These technologies allow farmers to apply water, fertilizers, and pesticides with pinpoint accuracy, reducing waste and environmental impact while improving yields. However, the digital divide remains a challenge. More than 22% of rural communities lack reliable broadband internet access, hindering the widespread implementation of AI and other advanced technologies in agriculture. While technology offers new opportunities, farmers are also facing significant economic challenges. The USDA's 2024 farm income forecast projects a 4.4% decline in net farm income from 2023, following a sharp 19.5% drop from 2022 to 2023. This financial pressure is compounded by rising production costs and market volatility. Climate variability adds another layer of complexity. Extreme weather events, changing precipitation patterns, and shifting growing seasons are forcing farmers to adapt quickly. These factors could reduce agricultural productivity by up to 25% over the coming decades without significant adaptation measures. But adapting requires additional financial resources, further straining farm profitability. In the face of these challenges, many farmers are turning to diversification as a strategy for resilience and profitability. The Science study mentioned earlier found that farms integrating several diversification methods supported more biodiversity while seeing simultaneous increases in human well-being and food security. Agritourism is one popular diversification strategy. In 2022, 28,600 U.S. farms reported agritourism income, averaging gross revenue of $44,000 from these activities. Activities like farm tours, pick-your-own operations, and seasonal festivals not only provide additional income but also foster a deeper connection between consumers and agriculture. The changing face of agriculture is directly impacting consumers. The rise of farm-to-table and local food movements reflects a growing interest in where our food comes from and how it's produced. If every U.S. household spent just $10 per week on locally grown food, it would generate billions of dollars for local economies. However, the larger challenges in agriculture can also lead to price fluctuations at the grocery store. The USDA's Economic Research Service projects that food-at-home prices will increase between 1.2% and 2.2% in 2024. Looking ahead, several innovations are poised to reshape agriculture: The transformation of American agriculture affects everyone, from the food we eat to the health of our environment and rural communities. Consumers have the power to support sustainable and diverse farming practices through our purchasing decisions. As citizens, they can advocate for policies that support farmers in adopting innovative and sustainable practices. The challenges facing agriculture are complex, but they also present opportunities for innovation and positive change. By understanding and engaging with these issues, everyone can play a part in shaping a more resilient, sustainable, and equitable food system for the future. Get local news delivered to your inbox!Cryptocurrency may have started as a rebel yell against traditional finance, but its future is increasingly converging with it. And with the news Wednesday (Dec. 4) that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump plans to nominate Paul Atkins as chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), observers are hopeful that the crypto-friendly move could turn the industry from a volatile gamble into a stable powerhouse. Atkins, if confirmed by lawmakers, would succeed the current SEC chair Gary Gensler, who for years was considered by industry insiders to be the crypto sector’s public enemy number one. If the SEC under his leadership adopts a more cooperative crypto tone, it could unlock new opportunities for Web3 innovation. The shift comes at a critical moment, with several high-profile lawsuits — like those involving Coinbase and Ripple — reshaping how crypto companies operate in the U.S. A regulatory framework that balances investor protection with the sector’s need for experimentation could establish the U.S. as a global hub for crypto — something the industry has been clamoring for. Still, that’s not to say that crypto’s wild west days are far behind it. Regulators still need to keep an eye out for bad actors and fraud. News also broke this Wednesday that the United Kingdom’s national crime agency had uncovered a multibillion-dollar money laundering scheme run out of London, Moscow and Dubai that enabled bad actors such as Russian spies and European drug traffickers to evade sanctions using cryptocurrency. That’s part of why the next phase of the sector’s maturation will be so crucial. The Ongoing Evolution of the Crypto Landscape The convergence of Web3 and payments continues to pick up steam. Nuvei on Wednesday launched a blockchain-based payment solution for merchants across Latin America, saying it enables these businesses to make faster cross-border B2B payments and settlements. The new solution allows businesses to use a Visa -supported physical or virtual card to make payments using stablecoins from a digital asset wallet anywhere Visa is accepted. And with one of President-elect Donald Trump’s businesses, Trump Media & Technology (TMTG), reportedly eyeing getting into the crypto payments game, shopping with crypto is increasingly for more consumers than digital asset diehards and technophiles. Thanks to expanding merchant acceptance and dedicated payment processors, crypto holders can use their assets to purchase a variety of goods and services, ranging from food, airline tickets, jewelry, cars and houses . But trading and investing the digital assets remains their top use case, and one that crypto companies are innovating to cater to. On Wednesday (Dec. 4), cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase upgraded its Coinbase One subscription program and launched a new tier called Coinbase One Premium. Two days earlier, on Monday (Dec. 2), digital assets solutions provider BitGo debuted a dedicated retail platform , designed to offer retail customers access to BitGo’s digital asset trading, staking, wallets and qualified custody services. Still, it was reported Friday (Nov. 29) that retail investors may not be embracing the ongoing crypto boom the same way they did during the pandemic, perhaps because they’re recalling how quickly that 2021 bubble popped. Stablecoins and the Future of Finance Stablecoins have surged north of a $190 billion market capitalization, jumping 46% year over year. For example, Tether , issuer of USDT — the world’s largest stablecoin — has seen its stablecoin token’s circulation rise to almost $133 billion, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the stablecoin market. But, as a result of the European Union’s landmark Markets in Crypto-Assets Act (MiCA), Tether, which has faced controversy throughout its history, is pulling issuance and operational support for its euro-pegged stablecoin, EURT, in the region. Still, rather than pursuing EU’s MiCA compliance directly, Tether is reportedly pivoting its European strategy toward its Hadron platform , which will support MiCA-compliant stablecoins issued by other entities. Elsewhere, on Monday (Dec. 2), the blockchain-based payments solutions company Orbital announced the launch of its Stablecoin Payments Dashboard . “Stablecoins are transforming global commerce, but businesses lack clarity on how to leverage them effectively,” Orbital said in a news release . Still, with the news Monday (Dec. 2) that the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB) reportedly aims to prevent centralized exchanges from allowing their users to withdraw stablecoins to self-custodial wallets, it’s worth reiterating that a lot of the economics behind stablecoins and their monetization comes from interest income and is predicated on users holding, not using, their stablecoins. That’s why PYMNTS unpacked how , while the promise of stablecoins is immense, their adoption comes with nuanced considerations. For finance professionals , an understanding the operational benefits, regulatory landscape and strategic implications is critical for integrating stablecoins into modern treasury operations. After all, FinTech and crypto investor Marc Andreessen kicked off a firestorm over the weekend by alleging , on Joe Rogan’s podcast, that those two sectors — and dozens of companies backed by his namesake firm, Andreessen Horowitz — were being fundamentally “debanked” by U.S. financial institutions (FIs). But while the tech investor’s remarks may resonate with the frustrations of many in the cryptocurrency and FinTech sectors, the reality could be far more nuanced than an SEC or political assault on crypto and FinTech — and could be one that requires a particular eye toward compliance as a growth engine, rather than cost center.

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang will be scratched due to an undisclosed injury for Sunday’s game against the New York Islanders at PPG Paints Arena. The team announced Letang’s status approximately a half hour before the opening faceoff but did not provide substantive details as to the nature of Letang’s ailment. Letang logged one of his highest time on ice figures of the season during a 6-3 road loss to the Islanders on Saturday, clocking 25:04 on 27 shifts. A six-time All-Star, the right-handed Letang has appeared in 34 games this season and scored 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) while averaging 23:24 of ice time per contest. His absence adds to the Penguins’ woes on the blue line as left-handers Marcus Pettersson (undisclosed) and Owen Pickering (concussion) are currently designated to injured reserve. With Letang scratched, Nate Clurman is expected to make his NHL debut. The 26-year-old right-hander participated in warmups and skated on the third pairing with left-hander Ryan Shea. In 23 American Hockey League games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, Shea has six points (two goals, four assists). Clurman has been recalled to the NHL roster three times this season, all within the past month. The most recent recall happened on Friday.

Maupay also had a dig at Everton when he departed on loan to Marseille in the summer and his latest taunt has further angered the Premier League club’s supporters. The 28-year-old said on X after Sean Dyche’s side had lost 2-0 to Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park on Sunday: “Whenever I’m having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile.” Whenever I’m having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile 🙂 — Neal Maupay (@nealmaupay_) December 29, 2024 Former boxer Tony Bellew was among the Toffees’ supporters who responded to Maupay, with the ex-world cruiserweight champion replying on X with: “P****!” Maupay endured a miserable spell at Everton, scoring just one league goal in 29 appearances after being signed by the Merseysiders for an undisclosed fee in 2022. He departed on a season-long loan to his former club Brentford for the 2023-24 season and left Goodison for a second time in August when Marseille signed him on loan with an obligation to make the deal permanent. After leaving Everton in the summer, Maupay outraged their fans by posting on social media a scene from the film Shawshank Redemption, famous for depicting the main character’s long fight for freedom.A cautious tone dominated markets before a key US jobs report that may give traders insight on the Federal Reserve’s policy path. US equity futures edged lower. Modest gains in the dollar put the greenback on course to rise for the ninth week out of the last 10. Treasury yields ticked higher. Oil extended its slide to a third day. Economists estimate that US nonfarm payrolls rose by 220,000 in November as hiring rebounded from weather-related and strike disruptions. It’s the final payrolls report before the Fed’s next interest-rate decision, with swaps trading putting the odds of a quarter-point reduction later this month at around 65%. “If we get a surprisingly hot number, you can expect pricing to come back more to 50-50,” said Michael Brown, a senior strategist at Pepperstone. “Given the time of the year, market volumes are lighter than usual, so you are more likely to see an outsize reaction — and that’s another reason for people to sit on their hands.” France’s week of political tumult was set to end positively in markets. The nation’s bonds outperformed euro-area peers after National Rally leader Marine Le Pen told Bloomberg News a budget could be delivered within weeks. The euro was steady. The CAC 40 index climbed more than 1%, rising for a seventh day in the longest winning streak in almost 10 months. Friday’s US labor market reading will have a big say over whether the S&P 500 can build on its 27% rally this year. Excitement around artificial intelligence and optimism that President-elect Donald Trump’s policies will boost US markets have propelled the benchmark toward its best year since 2019. Bank of America Corp. strategist Michael Hartnett said that powerful rally in US stocks as well as cryptocurrencies has left the asset classes looking frothy. The S&P 500’s price-to-book ratio has surged to 5.3 times in 2024, approaching a peak of 5.5 hit in March 2000 during the height of the technology bubble, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. BofA’s Hartnett said there’s a high risk of “overshoot” in early 2025 if the S&P 500 nears 6,666 points — about 10% above current levels. On Bitcoin, Hartnett said that with a market capitalization of over $2 trillion, the digital asset was comparable in size to the 11th largest economy in the world. On Friday, bitcoin pulled back from a record high set above $103,000, with its slump reaching as much as 7% at one point. In Asian trading, shares in China rose in a sign that investors were positioning for fresh economic support measures from a key policy meeting starting on Wednesday. South Korea was another focal point, with the won paring losses from earlier declines after the nation’s Army Special Forces Commander said there will be no second martial law. The country’s benchmark stock index fell as much as 1.8% before paring the drop. In commodities, oil added to its declines on concerns that OPEC ’s decision to push back the revival of halted production won’t prevent a surplus forming next year. He pointed to the possible advantages of easing sanctions on Syria and emphasized the possibilities presented by regional changes, especially in trade and investment. Prof. Dr. Raad Al-Tal, who teaches economics at the University of Jordan, highlighted how the nation's political stability and structural changes have enabled it to successfully handle geopolitical problems, such as the Gaza conflict. “The tourism sector, in particular, has shown notable recovery, bolstered by improved regional security and increased visitor numbers,” Al-Tal said, as reported by the Jordan News Agency. He also acknowledged that the country's foreign reserves had been strengthened by remittances from Jordanian expats. Despite regional constraints, Jordan's economy has proven resilient, according to economic analyst Dr. Ahmad Al-Majali. He credited this to the benefits of the Economic Modernization Vision, which has promoted development in a number of industries, as well as prudent monetary measures that have preserved stability. Although the majority of residents are aware of the harmful effects of burning crop waste, it is still a widespread practice, with serious consequences for health, household expenditures and the environment. One of the most notable findings was that migrant agricultural workers, who stay in the region only during seed cultivation time, reported better health than the residents of the stubble burning areas. This suggests that exposure to stubble burning may play a significant role in deteriorating the health of the local population." Koustuv Dalal, project leader, senior health economist and professor of public health, at Mid Sweden University The report "Insights and Realism of Stubble Burning in India: Health Economics Analyses" results from a collaborative project between Mid Sweden University and the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar. The project, funded by the Swedish Research Council, has deepened the understanding of the social, economic, environmental and health consequences of stubble burning in Punjab, India. "Our research shows that stubble burning has far-reaching consequences for air quality and people's quality of life. We discovered that the health-related quality of life is so low in the region that the results indicate a need for extensive efforts to improve both health and the environment", says Professor Koustuv Dalal. The research studies, conducted in four districts of Punjab, measured emissions from stubble burning and analyzed its effects on water and soil quality. In addition, focus groups and interviews evaluated the residents' health, economy, awareness, and perception. The report states that stubble burning can be linked to a number of health problems, such as coughing, breathing problems, allergic reactions, cancers, and indigestion problems. Students report that they are affected in their daily activities, and infertility in the core areas of problem areas of the region has increased significantly. Universal Corporation Receives NYSE Notice Regarding Filing of Form 10-Q for the Fiscal Quarter Ended September 30, 2024North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has pledged to enforce the “toughest” anti-U.S. policy, according to state media reports, in anticipation of Donald Trump assuming the U.S. presidency. Kim’s declaration comes amid uncertainties regarding a swift return to high-level diplomacy between Pyongyang and Washington upon Trump’s return to the White House. During his first term, Trump engaged in multiple summits with Kim, but experts predict Trump will initially address other international conflicts before revisiting nuclear diplomacy with North Korea. Kim made his stance clear during a Workers’ Party plenary meeting, denouncing the U.S. as a state committed to anti-communism. He condemned the growing U.S.-South Korea-Japan security collaborations as forming a “nuclear military bloc for aggression.” The Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim outlined a strategy for aggressive counteraction against the U.S., emphasizing the enhancement of North Korea’s military and the strengthening of its soldiers’ mental resilience. The previous period of diplomacy between Trump and Kim reduced belligerent exchanges and led to historic meetings. However, talks broke down in 2019 over disagreements on sanctions, and North Korea has advanced its weapons testing since. The U.S. and South Korea have consequently increased military exercises, which North Korea perceives as invasion rehearsals. Further complicating diplomatic efforts is North Korea’s military cooperation with Russia, including the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia’s conflict in Ukraine. This has raised concerns about the potential exchange of advanced weapons technology between Moscow and Pyongyang. North Korea’s military support for Russia and ongoing missile tests have made it challenging for international bodies, hindered by Russia and China’s vetoes, to impose additional sanctions. Kim recently reiterated his belief that his country’s nuclear armament is essential for countering perceived threats from the U.S.

TOKYO and CAMBRIDGE, Mass. , Dec. 4, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Eisai Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo , CEO: Haruo Naito , "Eisai") and Biogen Inc. (Nasdaq: BIIB, Corporate headquarters: Cambridge, Massachusetts , CEO: Christopher A. Viehbacher , "Biogen") announced today that the Federal Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risk (COFEPRIS) in Mexico has approved humanized anti-soluble aggregated amyloid-beta (Aβ) monoclonal antibody "LEQEMBI ® " (lecanemab) for the treatment of early Alzheimer's disease (AD)*. LEQEMBI selectively binds to soluble Aβ aggregates (protofibrils**), as well as insoluble Aβ aggregates (fibrils) which are a major component of Aβ plaques, thereby reducing both Aβ protofibrils and Aβ plaques in the brain. LEQEMBI is the first approved treatment shown to reduce the rate of disease progression and to slow cognitive and functional decline through this mechanism. LEQEMBI is also approved and being marketed in the U.S., Japan , China , South Korea , Hong Kong , Israel , the United Arab Emirates, and Great Britain . LEQEMBI's approval is based on the large global Phase 3 Clarity AD study. In the Clarity AD study, LEQEMBI met its primary endpoint and all key secondary endpoints with statistically significant results. 1,2 Approximately 1.3 million people in Mexico are estimated to suffer from AD, accounting for 60-70% of all dementia diagnoses. 3 AD most commonly affects individuals over the age of 65. 3 Eisai serves as the lead of LEQEMBI development and regulatory submissions globally with both Eisai and Biogen co-commercializing and co-promoting the product and Eisai having final decision-making authority. Eisai and Biogen will co-commercialize and co-promote LEQEMBI in Mexico . * Collectively referred to mild cognitive impairment due to AD or mild AD dementia. ** Protofibrils are believed to contribute to the brain injury that occurs with AD and are considered to be the most toxic form of Aβ, having a primary role in the cognitive decline associated with this progressive, debilitating condition. 4 Protofibrils cause injury to neurons in the brain, which in turn, can negatively impact cognitive function via multiple mechanisms, not only increasing the development of insoluble Aβ plaques but also increasing direct damage to brain cell membranes and the connections that transmit signals between nerve cells or nerve cells and other cells. It is believed the reduction of protofibrils may prevent the progression of AD by reducing damage to neurons in the brain and cognitive dysfunction. 5 Notes to Editors 1. About lecanemab (LEQEMBI ® ) Lecanemab is the result of a strategic research alliance between Eisai and BioArctic. It is a humanized immunoglobulin gamma 1 (IgG1) monoclonal antibody directed against aggregated soluble (protofibril) and insoluble forms of amyloid-beta (Aβ). Lecanemab is approved and being marketed in the U.S., Japan , China , South Korea , Hong Kong , Israel , the United Arab Emirates and Great Britain for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or mild dementia stage of disease (collectively referred to as early AD). The treatment's approvals in these countries was based on Phase 3 data from Eisai's global Clarity AD clinical trial, in which it met its primary endpoint and all key secondary endpoints with statistically significant results. 1,2 The most common adverse events (>10%) in the lecanemab group were infusion reactions, ARIA-H (combined cerebral microhemorrhages, cerebral macrohemorrhages, and superficial siderosis), ARIA-E (edema/effusion), headache, and fall. Lecanemab is under regulatory review in 16 countries and regions, including the European Union. In November 2024 , the treatment received a positive opinion from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommending approval. Since July 2020 the Phase 3 clinical study (AHEAD 3-45) for individuals with preclinical AD, meaning they are clinically normal and have intermediate or elevated levels of amyloid in their brains, is ongoing. AHEAD 3-45 is conducted as a public-private partnership between the Alzheimer's Clinical Trial Consortium that provides the infrastructure for academic clinical trials in AD and related dementias in the U.S, funded by the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health, Eisai and Biogen. Since January 2022 , the Tau NexGen clinical study for Dominantly Inherited AD (DIAD), that is conducted by Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network Trials Unit (DIAN-TU), led by Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis , is ongoing and includes lecanemab as the backbone anti-amyloid therapy. 2. About the Collaboration between Eisai and Biogen for AD Eisai and Biogen have been collaborating on the joint development and commercialization of AD treatments since 2014. Eisai serves as the lead of lecanemab development and regulatory submissions globally with Eisai and Biogen co-commercializing and co-promoting the product and Eisai having final decision-making authority. 3. West Ham pay Antonio tribute before Wolves gameSolid Minerals Development Minister, Dele Alake, has called on investors worldwide to take advantage of Nigeria’s geo-data digital platforms to access information on the country’s rich mineral resources. Alake also announced plans to fund more geological research and leverage the findings from both private and public institutions to build additional data. A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Minister, Kehinde Bamigbetan, on Wednesday noted that the minister highlighted the benefits while addressing Chief Executive Officers of global mining conglomerates at the ongoing annual Mines & Money Conference, held at the Business Design Centre in Islington, United Kingdom. The minister said Nigeria has adopted digital technology to market its minerals, making business enquiries easier and promoting transparent transactions. He listed three web platforms—Nigerian Mineral Decision Support System (NMRDSS), Electronic Mining Cadastral (EMC+), and National Geo-Data Centre—as key information resources for serious investors. Describing the NMRDSS as a web application that provides read-only access to geo-scientific and geo-economic data, Alake said it allows users to analyse mineral occurrence locations and make informed decisions regarding mining activities. He said, “By providing publicly available data about the geology and mineral wealth of Nigeria, this dynamic resource, updated regularly to keep the data as current as possible, enables investors to explore the environment of their chosen mineral occurrences. It answers queries on hydrology, demography, geography, urban planning, and transportation. Explaining EMC+, the minister said it is an online, real-time system for administering mineral titles throughout their lifecycle, offering efficiency and transparency. “This means investors can research and plan their application for titles remotely, as long as they have the necessary data for the application process,” he noted. Related News FG, France sign MoU to boost mining Benue govt set to enact electricity law Niger invites Russian firms to exploit uranium, other resources He also assured that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to acquiring more geological data to enhance the value of these platforms. On certifying the quality of the data, Alake, who also serves as Chairman of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group comprising African mining ministers, commended the efforts of African geoscientists in developing a new coding system to certify research reports. He stressed the need for value addition and beneficiation in the downstream segment of the mining value chain, stating that recent exploration has positioned Nigeria as a key player in supplying critical minerals to the world. “The deliberate investment in accurate geoscientific data, particularly for critical minerals such as lithium and rare earth minerals, has positioned Nigeria as a key player in the global transition to a green economy. This transition aligns with our commitment to sustainability and our role in the global fight against climate change,” he said. He urged major mining companies to partner with the Tinubu administration in its efforts to diversify the economy in favour of the solid minerals sector, adding that such collaboration would unlock the country’s vast mineral resources. He concluded his address with a strong pitch to top decision-makers in the global mining sector: “The future of Nigeria’s solid minerals is brimming with promise... Our doors are open to partnerships, and we invite you to join us on this transformative journey.” Chief executives at the event included Barrick’s President and Chief Executive, Mark Bristow, Traxys’ Chief Executive Officer, Mark Kristoff, and Anglo-American’s General Counsel, Kate Southwell. Earlier, the Minister engaged with investors at the Ministry’s exhibition booth, answering enquiries about mining opportunities.

Starmer to take aim at Whitehall with new UK ‘mission’ targetsDuring an interview with CBS’s “The Takeout” podcast released on Friday, Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV) said that the 17 Nobel laureates that the Biden administration used to justify spending in the American Rescue Plan were “17 educated idiots” who told the Biden administration what it wanted to hear because the administration “paid them.” Manchin stated that [relevant remarks begin around 12:05] inflation, immigration, and Afghanistan were the biggest blind spots of the Biden administration and the Harris campaign and addressed inflation first by stating, “I warned of that, and I got criticized, as you recall, they told me they had 17 Nobel laureates.” He added that both parties sent out stimulus checks under the Trump presidency and said that we didn’t do that during the Great Depression, but the pandemic was an unknown situation, where “you couldn’t do something, you weren’t supposed to go anywhere. That was a mistake, we found out later, but we erred on the [side] of caution. ... And then, by the time it was over and the election was over in 2020...we had put $3.2 trillion in mostly — all in a bipartisan way. Joe Biden gets elected, comes in, I say something on the floor when I hear they want to do the American Rescue Plan and want to go [through] reconciliation.” He further stated, “Remember when I stopped and it shut down for about eight or ten hours? That’s because they were extending unemployment benefits and we had a vaccine that worked. And I told him then, I said, you’ve got a vaccine that’s working, you’ve got people that have got money because we sent a check to everybody, and if we didn’t send a check, it was by mistake, because you tried to send a check to everybody, and I said, and they’ve got nowhere to go now, they’ve been cloistered in their home...and they’re going to go out there and find out...the supply chain’s been weak, things were shut down, they’re going to be paying — I want this, I’ll pay whatever price I can to get it, and they’re going to inflate it. You’ve got inflation coming at you hard when you do this, and now you’re still keeping people out of the workforce because you’re going to give them an extension clear up until October 2021 of unemployment benefits and they can’t go back and can’t be threatened to lose their unemployment benefits. You’ve got a perfect storm hitting you. ... That’s when they threw out the 17 Nobel laureates, and I said, you’ve got 17 educated idiots that are telling you what you want to hear because you paid them.” Follow Ian Hanchett on Twitter @IanHanchett

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — When Dan Quinn left the Dallas Cowboys after three years as their defensive coordinator to coach the Washington Commanders, it looked as if he was leaving a perennial playoff contender for a rebuilding project. Instead, Quinn's Commanders are in the thick of the playoff race even after consecutive losses provided something of a speed bump, while the Cowboys' season has fallen apart . Dallas (3-7) visits Washington (7-4) on Sunday in a franchise role reversal for the NFC East rivals. "For me and for the guys, man, it’s Washington-Dallas Week, let’s get down," Quinn said. “I don’t make one (game) too often bigger than another. I just think they’re all really important, and we absolutely go after it as hard as we can.” Quinn, defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. and a handful of former Dallas players have been part of Washington's turnaround, including pass rusher Dante Fowler, defensive end Dorance Armstrong, center Tyler Biadasz and receiver Noah Brown, who famously caught rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels' Hail Mary toss for the game-winning touchdown last month to beat Chicago . Armstrong has followed the Cowboys' downfall since leaving in free agency, saying simply, “It’s not good.” And that was before a piece of their stadium's roof fell Monday night before their fifth consecutive loss , a 34-10 blowout by Houston . Injuries, including starting QB Dak Prescott's torn hamstring that led to season-ending surgery, have been the backdrop for Dallas' forgettable year. Coach Mike McCarthy, who's approaching the end of his contract and possibly his tenure, said he and his staff are “going to stay the course” and play who's available. That means Cooper Rush again getting the nod in place of Prescott, though McCarthy said a package of plays could open up to get 2021 No. 3 pick Trey Lance into the game. “Cooper’s been there for a little minute, so he knows the system really good," said Fowler, who leads the Commanders with 8 1/2 sacks. "Trey Lance is really good with his legs, and he’s a dynamic quarterback, as well. You don’t want to go out there half-stepping against those guys because they do play good football, as well.” The Commanders have played far better football than the Cowboys so far this season, so much that the home team is a 10 1/2-point favorite on BetMGM Sportsbook. Washington has never been more than a nine-point favorite against Dallas in any game going back to at least 2003, according to BetMGM. The Cowboys could get a bit of a spark with the anticipated return of receiver Brandin Cooks, who has seen way too much sorrow around him since he last played in Week 4. “Get guys playing at a high level, playing fun, playing free, and having a great time out there,” Cooks said. “That’s what I’m not seeing right now. I think we can go out there and be more joyful in our process.” There's plenty of joy in Washington, with the playoffs still on the line, unlike Dallas. “It’s definitely cool to be in that type of position rather than being on the other side," Fowler said. “Just cool to see what Coach Quinn has just done since he came here with this team and getting a group of guys to come together and play as one.” A rib injury knocked Daniels out of a rout of Carolina on Oct. 20, and while he did not miss a game, the 23-year-old has not been as dangerous or effective since. The No. 2 pick out of LSU and reigning Heisman Trophy winner has completed 59.5% of his passes the past four games after 75.6% before getting injured, and he has had his average rushing yards cut nearly in half from 53.1 to 27.5. Quinn insists Daniels is not injured and pinned the regression on a lack of practice time in recent weeks. Daniels also said he's good to go after some extra rest following a 26-18 loss at Philadelphia on Thursday, Nov. 14. “The mini bye, I think it just helps everything, just to reset your mind and get ready for the second half of the season,” Daniels said. “I was able to reset and refocus, restart.” The offensive line has been a problem all season for the Cowboys. Now it’s a major injury concern. Perennial All-Pro right guard Zack Martin and promising young left guard Tyler Smith sustained ankle injuries on the same drive in the fourth quarter for the Cowboys against the Texans. Martin, who is also dealing with a shoulder issue, is doubtful. Smith is questionable while also working through a knee injury. T.J. Bass and Brock Hoffman were the replacements at guard against the Texans. The Cowboys could start four linemen 25 or younger, although veteran tackle Chuma Edoga could make his season debut. Edoga was the projected starter at left tackle before injuring a toe in training camp. He is listed as questionable. “With Zack, he’s a keystone for our offensive line," McCarthy said. "That will be a big one. But it’s more opportunity for these young players who haven’t played a lot and are getting a lot of work." McCarthy said the Cowboys “took a step backward, clearly” running the ball against Houston after making progress the previous couple of games. Rico Dowdle, now the clear lead back after ineffectiveness and off-field drama from Ezekiel Elliott, had just 28 yards on 10 carries, and the Cowboys finished with 64 yards. They allowed 141 yards, including 109 and three touchdowns by Joe Mixon, and have the NFL's second-worst rushing defense. Washington's Brian Robinson Jr. has already set a career high with seven TD runs and could be in for a lot of carries. “I look forward to running the ball any time,” Robinson said. “I’m prepared, I’m ready and if it happens like that, I’m ready for it." This move is part of the country’s broader strategy to attract local and global investments. During the opening ceremony of the sixth edition of the Supply Chain Conference in Riyadh, Saleh Al-Jasser, minister of transport and logistics, announced that the Kingdom plans to increase the number of logistics zones from 22 to 59 by 2030. “The Kingdom has successfully strengthened its logistical capabilities to support the national economy. This progress has attracted leading global companies to invest in the logistics sector,” Al-Jasser said. He further stated: “Both local and international private sectors have committed to establishing several logistics zones, with contracts signed for the creation of 18 logistics zones in ports, totaling investments exceeding SR10 billion.” Al-Jasser also highlighted the Kingdom’s rising position in the global container handling rankings. According to the UNCTAD report for 2024, Saudi Arabia gained an additional 231 points in the Liner Shipping Connectivity Index and added 30 new maritime shipping lines, underscoring the Kingdom’s key role in global trade. “Saudi Arabia has played an active role in enhancing the efficiency of global supply chains and establishing the foundations necessary to ensure the smooth flow of goods and commodities across the region,” Al-Jasser said. He added: “This has been achieved by leveraging the Kingdom’s strong and growing logistical capabilities, which include an advanced network of regional and international airports, a robust series of highly efficient ports, and modern railway and road networks. These assets accelerate shipping, handling, and export activities, linking the Kingdom to global markets.” Al-Jasser emphasized the ongoing efforts to enhance the Kingdom’s position as a global logistics hub. He highlighted that the integration of various transport modes—such as ports, airports, and railways—into a unified and efficient system will boost competitiveness and facilitate seamless trade flows. “The Kingdom will continue to enhance its logistical capabilities to facilitate exports, support supply chains, and improve its performance in global logistics indicators,” Al-Jasser said. He further emphasized: “The focus will remain on bolstering maritime shipping routes, expanding air freight operations, increasing rail freight capacities, and activating logistics centers to support sustainable development, further cementing the Kingdom's role as a global logistics hub and a vital link in international supply chains.” Al-Jasser also underlined the importance of supply chains in Saudi Arabia’s broader economic strategy, noting their fundamental role in achieving the sustainability and integration goals set out in the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Vision 2030. “We consider them a fundamental pillar for achieving the sustainability and integration we aspire to, in line with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and the Kingdom’s Vision 2030,” he said. After his speech, Al-Jasser told Arab News that the growing interest from global multinational companies in Saudi Arabia’s logistics sector is a testament to the Kingdom’s strategic location and commitment to becoming a global logistics hub. “This will not only create jobs for Saudis and make it more efficient for Saudi companies to operate, but will also enable various sectors across Saudi Arabia,” Al-Jasser said. He added: “This comes as part of the implementation of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which stems from Vision 2030 that is inspired and steered by his royal highness the crown prince.” Saudi Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Alkhorayef Meanwhile, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bander Alkhorayef emphasized the Kingdom’s natural resources and abundant energy supply as crucial advantages for its industrial sector. “The diverse resources of the Kingdom, including its natural wealth and abundant energy supply, are all positive factors that make Saudi Arabia an important partner in the industrial sector,” he said. Alkhorayef also highlighted the vital role logistics plays in enabling Saudi industries to compete globally, particularly given the limitations of the domestic market. “The presence of robust supply chains and logistics services is of utmost importance in reducing costs for manufacturers and investors, while enhancing the Kingdom's overall competitiveness,” he stated. He continued: “First, the natural resources available in the Kingdom are very large and are among the foundations of the main national strategies, especially the Industrial Strategy and the Mining Strategy. Maximizing the benefit from these resources is a priority, particularly in oil, gas, petrochemicals, and minerals.” Alkhorayef further noted, “Secondly, the geographical location of the Kingdom qualifies it to connect different regions of the world. In addition, the excellent infrastructure and the availability of energy at globally competitive prices make the Kingdom a natural choice for many manufacturing industries, whether intermediate products to become final in other regions or vice versa.” The minister also stressed Saudi Arabia’s strong domestic market, which is further bolstered by the Gulf region’s high purchasing power, making it an attractive market for various products, especially those in critical sectors such as food security, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and water-related industries. “Essentially, the Kingdom’s robust local demand and the Gulf’s economic strength create significant opportunities for businesses and investors in these essential sectors,” Alkhorayef added. Reflecting on global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, and disruptions in global supply chains, Alkhorayef acknowledged that these issues underscore the Kingdom’s potential to attract investments and use its resources and advanced technologies to address supply chain challenges. He also highlighted Saudi Arabia’s success in re-exports, stating, “In 2024, re-exports reached SR61 billion, representing a 23 percent growth compared to the previous year.” “This remarkable achievement was made possible through outstanding capabilities, robust infrastructure, and the seamless coordination among various entities,” he added. Alkhorayef emphasized that Saudi Arabia’s strategic location and infrastructure are key enablers of its growing industrial sector. “The excellent infrastructure and the availability of energy at globally competitive prices make the Kingdom a natural choice for many manufacturing industries,” he said. A new prospect in rail projects Al-Jasser also discussed the Northern Train Line, which he described as the Kingdom’s largest rail project and a cornerstone for the mining sector. The line, connecting mining areas with key ports, plays a vital role in supporting industrial and economic growth. “The Northern Train Line is likely the largest rail project in the Kingdom. It has been established as a foundation to enable the mining sector. Therefore, all infrastructure development plans are interconnected with the inputs from various sectors,” he said during the panel session. Al-Jasser noted that the Saudi Railway Co. is currently expanding and duplicating the Northern Train Line with investments exceeding SR5 billion. This expansion is part of the Kingdom's broader plans to enhance the mining sector and ensure efficient connectivity between the railway and eastern ports, supporting both export and trade growth. Through these efforts, Saudi Arabia is continuing to align its industrial and logistics sectors with the ambitious goals of Vision 2030, fostering a sustainable and globally competitive economy. It is worth noting that the conference brings together an exclusive group of international experts and specialists, focused on sharing best practices and the latest methods to enhance supply chain performance and efficiency. The program features a series of engaging dialogue sessions, as well as workshops and an entrepreneurship corner. Additionally, a platform has been created to empower Saudi women in the supply chain sector, offering training and development opportunities to boost their contributions to the Saudi economy and open new career paths in key industries.

Lawyer says ex-Temple basketball standout Hysier Miller met with NCAA for hours amid gambling probe PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A lawyer for former Temple basketball standout Hysier Miller says the 22-year-old sat for a long interview with the NCAA amid an investigation into unusual gambling activity. But neither the lawyer nor federal law enforcement officials on Friday would confirm reports that a federal probe is now under way. Lawyer Jason Bologna says Miller cooperated because he hopes to play again. Miller was released last month after transferring to Virginia Tech. Temple President John Fry says the Philadelphia school has not been asked for any information from federal law enforcement officials.Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra Is Missing Some Magic

Management cannot reliably predict or estimate, without unreasonable effort, the impact and timing on future operating results arising from certain items excluded from segment margin or adjusted EPS. We therefore, do not present a guidance range, or a reconciliation to, the nearest GAAP financial measures of operating margin or EPS. 3 Adjusted EPS and adjusted EPS V% guidance excludes items identified in the non-GAAP reconciliation of adjusted EPS at the end of this release, including the impact of amortization expense for acquisition-related intangible assets and other acquisition-related costs, and any potential future items that we cannot reliably predict or estimate such as pension mark-to-market. We describe many of the trends and other factors that drive our business and future results in this release. Such discussions contain forward-looking statements within the meaning of Section 21E of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, as amended (the Exchange Act). Forward-looking statements are those that address activities, events, or developments that management intends, expects, projects, believes, or anticipates will or may occur in the future and include statements related to the proposed spin-off of the Company's Advanced Materials business into a stand-alone, publicly traded company. They are based on management's assumptions and assessments in light of past experience and trends, current economic and industry conditions, expected future developments, and other relevant factors, many of which are difficult to predict and outside of our control. They are not guarantees of future performance, and actual results, developments, and business decisions may differ significantly from those envisaged by our forward-looking statements. We do not undertake to update or revise any of our forward-looking statements, except as required by applicable securities law. Our forward-looking statements are also subject to material risks and uncertainties, including ongoing macroeconomic and geopolitical risks, such as lower GDP growth or recession, supply chain disruptions, capital markets volatility, inflation, and certain regional conflicts, that can affect our performance in both the near- and long-term. In addition, no assurance can be given that any plan, initiative, projection, goal, commitment, expectation, or prospect set forth in this release can or will be achieved. These forward-looking statements should be considered in light of the information included in this release, our Form 10-K, and our other filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Any forward-looking plans described herein are not final and may be modified or abandoned at any time. This release contains financial measures presented on a non-GAAP basis. Honeywell's non-GAAP financial measures used in this release are as follows: Segment profit, on an overall Honeywell basis; Segment profit margin, on an overall Honeywell basis; Organic sales growth; Free cash flow; and Adjusted earnings per share. Management believes that, when considered together with reported amounts, these measures are useful to investors and management in understanding our ongoing operations and in the analysis of ongoing operating trends. These measures should be considered in addition to, and not as replacements for, the most comparable GAAP measure. Certain measures presented on a non-GAAP basis represent the impact of adjusting items net of tax. The tax-effect for adjusting items is determined individually and on a case-by-case basis. Refer to the Appendix attached to this release for reconciliations of non-GAAP financial measures to the most directly comparable GAAP measures. Appendix Non-GAAP Financial Measures The following information provides definitions and reconciliations of certain non-GAAP financial measures presented in this press release to which this reconciliation is attached to the most directly comparable financial measures calculated and presented in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Management believes that, when considered together with reported amounts, these measures are useful to investors and management in understanding our ongoing operations and in the analysis of ongoing operating trends. Management believes the change to adjust for amortization of acquisition-related intangibles and certain acquisition- and divestiture-related costs provides investors with a more meaningful measure of its performance period to period, aligns the measure to how management will evaluate performance internally, and makes it easier for investors to compare our performance to peers. These measures should be considered in addition to, and not as replacements for, the most comparable GAAP measure. Certain measures presented on a non-GAAP basis represent the impact of adjusting items net of tax. The tax-effect for adjusting items is determined individually and on a case-by-case basis. Other companies may calculate these non-GAAP measures differently, limiting the usefulness of these measures for comparative purposes. Management does not consider these non-GAAP measures in isolation or as an alternative to financial measures determined in accordance with GAAP. The principal limitations of these non-GAAP financial measures are that they exclude significant expenses and income that are required by GAAP to be recognized in the consolidated financial statements. In addition, they are subject to inherent limitations as they reflect the exercise of judgments by management about which expenses and income are excluded or included in determining these non-GAAP financial measures. Investors are urged to review the reconciliation of the non-GAAP financial measures to the comparable GAAP financial measures and not to rely on any single financial measure to evaluate Honeywell's business. Honeywell International Inc. Definition of Organic Sales Percent Change We define organic sales percentage as the year-over-year change in reported sales relative to the comparable period, excluding the impact on sales from foreign currency translation and acquisitions, net of divestitures, for the first 12 months following the transaction date. We believe this measure is useful to investors and management in understanding our ongoing operations and in analysis of ongoing operating trends. A quantitative reconciliation of reported sales percent change to organic sales percent change has not been provided for forward-looking measures of organic sales percent change because management cannot reliably predict or estimate, without unreasonable effort, the fluctuations in global currency markets that impact foreign currency translation, nor is it reasonable for management to predict the timing, occurrence and impact of acquisition and divestiture transactions, all of which could significantly impact our reported sales percent change. Honeywell International Inc. Reconciliation of Operating Income to Segment Profit, Calculation of Operating Income and Segment Profit Margins (Unaudited) (Dollars in millions) Three Months Ended December 31, Twelve Months Ended December 31, 2023 2023 Operating income $ 1,583 $ 7,084 Stock compensation expense 1 54 202 Repositioning, Other 2,3 569 952 Pension and other postretirement service costs 3 17 66 Amortization of acquisition-related intangibles 76 292 Acquisition-related costs 4 1 2 Segment profit $ 2,300 $ 8,598 Operating income $ 1,583 $ 7,084 ÷ Net sales $ 9,440 $ 36,662 Operating income margin % 16.8 % 19.3 % Segment profit $ 2,300 $ 8,598 ÷ Net sales $ 9,440 $ 36,662 Segment profit margin % 24.4 % 23.5 % 1 Included in Selling, general and administrative expenses. 2 Includes repositioning, asbestos, environmental expenses, equity income adjustment, and other charges. 3 Included in Cost of products and services sold and Selling, general and administrative expenses. 4 Includes acquisition-related fair value adjustments to inventory. We define operating income as net sales less total cost of products and services sold, research and development expenses, impairment of assets held for sale, and selling, general and administrative expenses. We define segment profit, on an overall Honeywell basis, as operating income, excluding stock compensation expense, pension and other postretirement service costs, amortization of acquisition-related intangibles, certain acquisition- and divestiture-related costs and impairments, and repositioning and other charges. We define segment profit margin, on an overall Honeywell basis, as segment profit divided by net sales. We believe these measures are useful to investors and management in understanding our ongoing operations and in analysis of ongoing operating trends. A quantitative reconciliation of operating income to segment profit, on an overall Honeywell basis, has not been provided for all forward-looking measures of segment profit and segment profit margin included herein. Management cannot reliably predict or estimate, without unreasonable effort, the impact and timing on future operating results arising from items excluded from segment profit, particularly pension mark-to-market expense as it is dependent on macroeconomic factors, such as interest rates and the return generated on invested pension plan assets. The information that is unavailable to provide a quantitative reconciliation could have a significant impact on our reported financial results. To the extent quantitative information becomes available without unreasonable effort in the future, and closer to the period to which the forward-looking measures pertain, a reconciliation of operating income to segment profit will be included within future filings. Acquisition amortization and acquisition- and divestiture-related costs are significantly impacted by the timing, size, and number of acquisitions or divestitures we complete and are not on a predictable cycle, and we make no comment as to when or whether any future acquisitions or divestitures may occur. We believe excluding these costs provides investors with a more meaningful comparison of operating performance over time and with both acquisitive and other peer companies. For the twelve months ended December 31, 2023, adjusted earnings per share utilizes weighted average shares of approximately 668.2 million. For the three and twelve months ended December 31, 2024, expected earnings per share utilizes weighted average shares of approximately 653 million and 655 million, respectively. 2 Pension mark-to-market expense uses a blended tax rate of 18%, net of tax benefit of $27 million, for 2023. 3 For the three and twelve months ended December 31, 2023, acquisition-related intangibles amortization includes $62 million and $231 million, net of tax benefit of approximately $14 million and $61 million, respectively. For the three and twelve months ended December 31, 2024, expected acquisition-related intangibles amortization includes approximately $110 million and $330 million, net of tax benefit of approximately $30 million and $85 million, respectively. 4 For the three and twelve months ended December 31, 2023, the adjustment for acquisition-related costs, which is principally comprised of third-party transaction and integration costs and acquisition-related fair value adjustments to inventory, is approximately $2 million and $7 million, net of tax benefit of approximately $0 million and $2 million, respectively. For the three and twelve months ended December 31, 2024, the expected adjustment for acquisition-related costs, which is principally comprised of third-party transaction and integration costs and acquisition-related fair value adjustments to inventory, is approximately $20 million and $65 million, net of tax benefit of approximately $5 million and $15 million, respectively. 5 For the three and twelve months ended December 31, 2024, the expected adjustment for divestiture-related costs, which is principally comprised of third-party transaction costs, is approximately $25 million, net of tax benefit of approximately $5 million. 6 For the three and twelve months ended December 31, 2023, the adjustments were a benefit of $2 million and $3 million, without tax expense, respectively. For the twelve months ended December 31, 2024, the expected adjustment is a $17 million expense, without tax benefit, due to the settlement of a contractual dispute with a Russian entity associated with the Company's suspension and wind down activities in Russia. 7 For the the twelve months ended December 31, 2023, the adjustment was $8 million, net of tax benefit of $3 million, due to the net expense related to the NARCO Buyout and HWI Sale. 8 Bendix Friction Materials ("Bendix") is a business no longer owned by the Company. In 2023, the Company changed its valuation methodology for calculating legacy Bendix liabilities. For the three and twelve months ended December 31, 2023, the adjustment was $330 million, net of tax benefit of $104 million, (or $434 million pre-tax) due to a change in the estimated liability for resolution of asserted (claims filed as of the financial statement date) and unasserted Bendix-related asbestos claims. The Company experienced fluctuations in average resolution values year-over-year in each of the past five years with no well-established trends in either direction. In 2023, the Company observed two consecutive years of increasing average resolution values (2023 and 2022), with more volatility in the earlier years of the five-year period (2019 through 2021). Based on these observations, the Company, during its annual review in the fourth quarter of 2023, reevaluated its valuation methodology and elected to give more weight to the two most recent years by shortening the look-back period from five years to two years (2023 and 2022). The Company believes that the average resolution values in the last two consecutive years are likely more representative of expected resolution values in future periods. The $434 million pre-tax amount was attributable primarily to shortening the look-back period to the two most recent years, and to a lesser extent to increasing expected resolution values for a subset of asserted claims to adjust for higher claim values in that subset than in the modelled two-year data set. It is not possible to predict whether such resolution values will increase, decrease, or stabilize in the future, given recent litigation trends within the tort system and the inherent uncertainty in predicting the outcome of such trends. The Company will continue to monitor Bendix claim resolution values and other trends within the tort system to assess the appropriate look-back period for determining average resolution values going forward. 9 For the twelve months ended December 31, 2024, the expected impairment charge of indefinite-lived intangible assets associated with the personal protective equipment business is $37 million, net of tax benefit of $11 million. 10 For the twelve months ended December 31, 2024, the expected impairment charge of assets held for sale is $125 million, with no tax benefit. Note: Amounts may not foot due to rounding. We define adjusted earnings per share as diluted earnings per share adjusted to exclude various charges as listed above. We believe adjusted earnings per share is a measure that is useful to investors and management in understanding our ongoing operations and in analysis of ongoing operating trends. For forward-looking information, management cannot reliably predict or estimate, without unreasonable effort, the pension mark-to-market expense as it is dependent on macroeconomic factors, such as interest rates and the return generated on invested pension plan assets. We therefore do not include an estimate for the pension mark-to-market expense. Based on economic and industry conditions, future developments, and other relevant factors, these assumptions are subject to change. Acquisition amortization and acquisition- and divestiture-related costs are significantly impacted by the timing, size, and number of acquisitions or divestitures we complete and are not on a predictable cycle and we make no comment as to when or whether any future acquisitions or divestitures may occur. We believe excluding these costs provides investors with a more meaningful comparison of operating performance over time and with both acquisitive and other peer companies. Honeywell International Inc. Reconciliation of Expected Cash Provided by Operating Activities to Expected Free Cash Flow (Unaudited) Twelve Months Ended December 31, 2024(E) ($B) Cash provided by operating activities ~$5.8 - $6.1 Capital expenditures ~(1.2) Free cash flow ~$4.6 - $4.9 We define free cash flow as cash provided by operating activities less cash for capital expenditures. We believe that free cash flow is a non-GAAP measure that is useful to investors and management as a measure of cash generated by operations that will be used to repay scheduled debt maturities and can be used to invest in future growth through new business development activities or acquisitions, pay dividends, repurchase stock, or repay debt obligations prior to their maturities. This measure can also be used to evaluate our ability to generate cash flow from operations and the impact that this cash flow has on our liquidity.
