His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs ( HMRC) has explained a tax rule which all savers need to be aware of, including those using Individual Savings Account (ISA). The rules concern how much people can make in interest before having to file a self-assessment and pay tax on it. Responding to a query from a customer on a popular social media platform, X, who wanted to know whether they had made enough to pay tax, HMRC cleared up the situation. The person had asked if they would need to fill in a self-assessment tax return if they were earning more than £2,000 a year in interest. HMRC explained it would need to be over £10,000, depending on the type of account. The tax authority replied: “If you have more than £10,000 from dividends or savings and interest, you would need to complete a self-assessment tax return.” Speaking on ISA, the HMRC noted that the account is tax-free, including some NS&I accounts. “If you have an Individual Savings Account (ISA), this is tax-free as well as some National Savings and Investment (NS&I) accounts.” According to Express, people can save up to £20,000 a year in ISAs with no tax to pay on the amount. It explained further with the rules, savers get a starting rate allowing them to earn £5,000 in interest each year without paying tax on it, but this reduces by £1 for each £1 you earn above your personal allowance, of £12,570. Those on the basic rate of income tax can earn up to £1,000 a year in interest tax-free, which drops to £500 if you are on the higher rate and then to £0 for those on the additional rate. NS&I customers with Premium Bonds also have no tax to pay on any prizes they win in the monthly draw, and NS&I has a Direct ISA and a Junior ISA. Taylor Swift has made a surprise stop at a Kansas City children’s hospital, shocking parents and patients alike as she laughed with them, posed for photos and exchanged gifts. All parent Cassie Thomas was told beforehand was that she might want to brush her hair and teeth because there was going to be a special visitor. But she was stunned when Swift, fresh off her Eras Tour and one day before her 35th birthday, walked into her son's son Beckett Thomas' room on Thursday at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. “No rumors. Like, we literally had absolutely no idea this was happening,” Thomas recalled. Her 13-year-old son, Beckett Thomas, is a cancer patient and a fan of Swift's Kansas City Chiefs tight-end boyfriend, Travis Kelce. Beckett uses a 3D printer to make earrings bearing his and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' names, walking around the hospital unit selling them to nurses. Now, Swift has a pair as well. “She was amazing,” Beckett's mom said. “So down to earth.” Another patient told Swift that her favorite song was “Love Story" and had some questions about San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, whose team played the Chiefs in the Super Bowl earlier this year. Surprised, Taylor, muttered: “Brock Purdy, What? I mean, I don’t mind Brock Purdy.” She then continued: “He put me through a lot last February.” Asked before the Super Bowl whether he was prepared to disappoint Swift, Purdy responded: “Yes.” The game ended with Mahomes rallying the Chiefs to second straight Super Bowl title, 25-22 over the 49ers in overtime. “I was very stressed for a second but it all ended up fine,” Swift told the girl, their recorded conversation posted online. The girl then chimed in: “I like Travis now.” Swift responded with: “Me too. That’s an absolute yes on that one." There is no word on whether Swift will be in the stands when the Chiefs play the Browns on Sunday in Kelce’s hometown of Cleveland.WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A ban on New Zealanders wearing or displaying symbols of gang affiliation in public took effect on Thursday, with police officers making their first arrest for a breach of the law three minutes later. The man was driving with gang insignia displayed on the dashboard of his car and was among more than a dozen people arrested or summoned to appear in court for exhibiting such symbols since the law took force, New Zealand’s police said Friday. The prohibition on displaying gang insignia anywhere outside private homes, including on clothing or in vehicles, is among a suite of new measures intended to bolster police powers to disrupt the groups. Wearing or displaying the insignia of 35 listed gangs will now prompt a fine of up to 5,000 New Zealand dollars ($2,940) or up to six months in jail. New Zealand’s center-right government, which pledged ahead of last October’s election to tackle gang crime, says the measures will reduce the membership of groups responsible for violence and drug offenses. But detractors say the law breaches civil liberties and could drive gang activities underground. "Gangs aren’t community groups. They’re not a Rotary club," Prime Minister Christopher Luxon wrote on social media Thursday. “They thrive on destroying the lives of other New Zealanders, whether that’s by peddling drugs or through brutal acts of violence that leave communities in fear.” Under the new law, officers can also disperse public gatherings of three or more members, bar some gang affiliates from associating with each other, and enter homes of those who keep breaking the law to search for banned items. Gang membership will now be considered by the courts when sentencing offenders. Police Minister Mark Mitchell told reporters Thursday that two people were arrested hours after the law took effect for wearing gang “patches,” which are large insignia often worn by gang members on the backs of leather jackets or vests. The government says the patches are intimidating because members are required to earn them through violent acts. The measures shift New Zealand's response to gangs closer to that of neighboring Australia, which also uses a law to suppress the public visibility of gangs, and away from jurisdictions like the U.S. and Britain, which use criminal law to respond to specific activities carried out by organized crime groups, according to a report published by Treasury officials in February. Facial tattoos that display gang insignia are exempt from the ban, as is the wearing of gang colors. The government was criticized by some for not including white supremacist groups in its list of 35 organizations targeted by the new law. That means displaying swastikas and making Nazi salutes remains legal in New Zealand -– unlike in Australia, which banned both in a law that took effect in January. There are nearly 9,400 people on a New Zealand police list of known gang members. New Zealand’s population is 5 million. Successive governments have vowed to tackle criminal gangs, which often are linked to poverty and other deprivation. The previous center-left government was decried by Luxon’s administration for working with gangs on social initiatives, including COVID-19 vaccination efforts, while the current government has been denounced for advancing policies that are likely to ensnare some of New Zealand’s most marginalized groups, including Indigenous Māori. Official reports say three-quarters of those on the national gang list are Māori, who make up less than 20% of New Zealanders, and that 80% to 90% of those in two of the most notorious gangs are former wards of the state. Luxon made a formal apology this month for the widespread abuse of children and vulnerable adults in state care over the past seven decades.

NBA Veteran Forward Nearing Deal With Sacramento Kings: Report

New Delhi: In its reply to the Election Commission of India notice on the Congress complaints against Union home minister Amit Shah 's campaign speeches during the Maharashtra and Jharkhand polls, the BJP has cited Jawaharlal Nehru 's letters to chief ministers on reservations besides Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi-led governments sitting on Mandal Commission reports. It has argued that the BJP is "duty bound to set the record straight by calling the Opposition's bluff," ET has learnt. The Congress, which also earned an ECI notice for BJP complaints against Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi 's speeches, has defended its leader, citing a series of news reports as the basis for his comments and termed BJP's complaints as "false, malicious and defamatory." ET gathers that the ECI is seized of both communications but is yet to take a final view on the matter. Faced with complaints from both BJP and Congress for alleged violation of the model code of conduct by top leaders of BJP and Congress, Amit Shah and Rahul Gandhi, respectively, the poll panel had sent notices to their party presidents - BJP's JP Nadda and Congress' Mallikarjun Kharge on November 16. Both parties had sought extension of time and while the Congress responded by late November, BJP's reply came in earlier this month. They also point to how the Mandal Commission report was completed and presented on December 31, 1980, when Indira Gandhi was the PM, followed by Rajiv Gandhi but it was not implemented until 1989. It has also referred to the Congress alliance with the National Conference in J&K and the latter's manifesto on seeking restoration of Article 370. This amounts to undoing reservation and hence vicarious Congress support for depriving OBCs, SCs and STs, BJP has told ECI. It has also once again gone on to single out former PM Manmohan Singh's statement on Muslims having the "first right on India's resources" besides alleging that the Congress ruled Karnataka is aiming at reservations for Muslims. In its submissions to ECI, the BJP said that its star campaigners have not violated any law or instructions of the poll panel and have instead "lived up to their national duty of exposing the web of lies woven by INC". Congress stand BJP complaints mischievously "force a malicious interpretation onto what is fair political commentary on the actions of BJP," the Congress is learnt to have said in its reply. These actions have been widely reported and discussed in the public domain, the Congress has stated, listing out a series of news reports reflecting the alleged links between serving vice chancellors and BJP/RSS, a subject which found mention in Gandhi's election speeches. It has also cited news article sources for other statements made by Gandhi on relocation of industrial projects from Maharashtra. The party has written that "not a single one of the offences cited by the BJP has been committed by" Rahul Gandhi or any Congress leader and all comments made were based on "verifiable facts and would fall within the ambit of fair political commentary". The party has also alleged that the BJP has attempted to "thrust a false narrative about the INC" to mislead the public. (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel )

Trump team signs transition agreement with Biden White House after delaysJaquelin Roy’s season has come to an end with four games remaining. The New England Patriots moved the defensive tackle to injured reserve on Friday, shortly after he had been ruled out on the final injury report of the week due to a foot injury. Roy, 24, missed back-to-back practices after coming out of the bye as a limited participant. The 6-foot-3, 305-pound LSU product signed to the practice squad following a workout in September. A promotion to the 53-man roster followed as the calendar turned to October. Across six appearances, including one start, Roy had a hand in 17 tackles as well as the initial two sacks of his NFL career. He played 141 defensive snaps over that span, yet missed three consecutive games from November into December because of a neck issue. Entering the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round of the 2023 draft at No. 141 overall, Roy saw action in a dozen contests during his rookie campaign in the NFC North. He totaled one start and eight tackles before being waived at the league’s cutdown deadline in August. A spot on the 53-man roster in Foxborough now opens with his placement on injured reserve. The Arizona Cardinals host Sunday’s 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff at State Farm Stadium.

The widow of the late England rugby star Tom Voyce has expressed that the family has been "overwhelmed" by the outpouring of support following his tragic disappearance. Tom Voyce, 43, and a former wing for England, was tragically swept away while attempting to drive across a swollen river during Storm Darragh near Alnwick, Northumberland, last weekend. After days of relentless searching by emergency services and local volunteers, a body was discovered in the River Aln on Thursday (December 12), found downstream from where Mr Voyce's car was lost. It has now been officially confirmed that the recovered body is indeed Mr Voyce, who was born in Truro and played throughout his youth in Cornwall. His wife, Anna, released a heart-wrenching statement: "Absolutely devastated and heartbroken doesn't even describe how we feel." She continued with poignant determination, focusing on their son: "My main focus now is our son Oscar, having done what he asked, 'find Daddy'." Anna also highlighted the family's involvement in the search efforts: "All of Tom's family were involved in the search." Expressing gratitude towards those who coordinated the search, she said: "I will be forever grateful to my brothers Hugh and Jamie, Aidan Philipson and Garry Whitfield for co-ordinating the search party working alongside the police teams." Reflecting on the community's response, she added: "Tom would be blown away by the amount of people that were out there helping." "We have all been overwhelmed by the support of friends, many travelling from far afield to help with the search." Anna spoke of the tight-knit community they are part of: "We are just so lucky to live in such a special community that pulled together to find Tom." She concluded by sharing a personal detail about their life changes: the family had moved from London to Northumberland in 2019, and her husband had left his position at Investec bank to start Trevow Vegetation Management. Voyce was well-established within the communities of Northumberland and Scottish Borders, areas that have seen many local residents come forward to aid in the search efforts, according to Mrs Voyce. She mentioned: "Tom was fully immersed in Alnwick Rugby Club and was much loved by Oscar's under sevens team which he coached with gusto, giving back to the game that gave him so much." "Oscar is immensely proud of his daddy and he was the best father and role model that Oscar could have asked for." "Tom was proud, and cherished, his rugby memories and as an adopted 'Northumbrian' local he leaves a hole in so many of our hearts." "With his big warm smile, passion and funny stories he loved nothing better than sitting round a table chatting with family and friends." Tom studied at Cirencester Agricultural College where he encountered his future brother-in-law Jamie and subsequently befriended Anna, leading to their marriage at Babington House, Somerset in 2015. Following her tenure as a consultant for the British Lions, she founded her own web-based homeware brand, OSSKI, post the birth of their child. Mr. Voyce's mother Christine still lives in Cornwall, the county of Tom's upbringing alongside his late father Michael and sister Emily, who has taken up residence in New York. The family expresses immense gratitude to the police, mountain rescue, and all specialist teams involved in the search operations, while requesting privacy during this time. Anxiety regarding Voyce's whereabouts arose on Sunday after he did not return home from socialising with friends the preceding Saturday. His Toyota Hilux was found downstream from Abberwick Ford, leading police to believe he was carried away while attempting to flee the vehicle. The river's level was notably high over the weekend as Storm Darragh battered the UK. A large-scale search operation was initiated, involving Northumbria Police, drone technology, a police helicopter, coastguard officers, and the North of Tyne and Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Teams. Family members and friends of the much-admired former rugby player also participated in the search efforts. On Thursday, specialist officers from the Marine Unit of Northumbria Police discovered something in the river near Abberwick Mill. The rugby community expressed its shock and sorrow when he disappeared, with messages coming from World Cup champions Matt Dawson and Lawrence Dallaglio, who tragically lost his sister in the Marchioness disaster on the Thames in 1989. During his career, Voyce earned nine caps for England and spent six years at Wasps, from 2003 to 2009, where he contributed to their European and domestic victories. He transferred there from Bath before moving on to Gloucester in 2009. Before retiring in May 2013, he made 220 Premiership appearances.

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Deshawn Purdie threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to O'Mega Blake for the go-ahead score and Charlotte defeated Florida Atlantic 39-27 on Saturday in a game that matched two new interim coaches. Charlotte (4-7, 3-4 American Athletic Conference) fired Biff Poggi on Monday and Tim Brewster took over. FAU (2-9, 0-7) fired Tom Ferman, also on Monday, with Chad Lunsford taking charge. After Blake's third touchdown catch of the game that came with 5:25 left, the 49ers extended their lead when Tyriq Starks was strip-sacked by Ja'Qurious Conley and 335-pound Katron Kevans carried it 22 yards into the end zone. Blake made five catches for a career-high 205 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown. Purdie was 16 of 30 for a career-best 396 yards passing with the three scores plus an interception. The 49ers only rushed for 46 yards. Stephen Rusnak kicked four field goals. Starks was 12-of-23 passing for 179 yards including a 65-yard score to Omari Hayes in the final minute of the third quarter to get FAU within six of the 49ers. CJ Campbell rushed 58 yards to score early in the fourth quarter and the Owls had a 27-26 lead. Campbell finished with 150 yards on 21 carries.
