Global market sentiment has been boosted by President-Elect Donald Trump signaling his intention to nominate Key Square Group founder Scott Bessent as U.S. Treasury secretary. Investors have generally viewed the pick favorably and see the hedge fund manager as someone who will be supportive of the equity market. However, Trump stated that Bessent would help him implement protectionist trade policies, which could affect the market. Meanwhile, Asia-Pacific markets mostly rose Monday, with investors awaiting a slew of economic data this week, including China industrial data and India's third-quarter gross domestic product numbers. It is not merely one of the most important video games of all time, but, I would argue, one of the greatest works of anything of the past half-century. Considering the international scope of its influence, one could make the case for the game as the final major piece of Soviet art. It’s the embodiment of interactive artistic design. Tetris posits a simple vocabulary of seven differently shaped blocks of four units each, and an even simpler grammar: Blocks fall, one unit at a time, stacking at the bottom of the screen, and vanish if you manage to fill an entire row. From this premise springs mesmerizing displays, infinite variations of symbols in motion. Over the years, there have been hundreds of different versions of Tetris released for any device with which you can play a video game, but no matter what twists in rules or variations on gameplay they throw in, the core is unchanged from what Alexey Pajitnov devised all that time ago. This year, the Tetris Company observes the 40th anniversary of the game. In celebration, developer Digital Eclipse released Tetris Forever , a tribute game that incorporates 17 of those hundreds of versions in the third entry in its Gold Master Series , which has been testing ways to build out games as documentaries. Tetris Forever includes an interactive timeline that allows players to inspect primary documents like photos and advertising. It also includes roughly an hour and a half worth of interviews with figures like Pajitnov and his longtime friend and collaborator Henk Rogers, who was key to bringing the game to consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy. Get the latest art news, reviews and opinions from Hyperallergic. Daily Weekly Opportunities Tetris Forever struggles under some of the same constraints as those of a traditional linear documentary, most notably problems of access. Digital Eclipse clearly found terrific cooperation from the Tetris Company and Rogers’s studio Blue Planet Software, (previously Bullet-Proof Software), evident in the fact that the majority of Tetris versions included are courtesy of BPS. But there are also notable gaps. Despite how much time the game spends talking about the process by which Tetris came to platforms like the NES and Game Boy (both of which were crucial for its worldwide proliferation), neither version can be played here. There’s so much Tetris out there that a labyrinth of rights issues run around and between them — it’s difficult for a project like this to be even close to comprehensive. Still, within its restrictions, Tetris Forever works as a documentary game because it lets each part of that descriptor inform the another. A player has complete freedom to navigate the timeline of Tetris ’s development, spread, and evolution, and they can play variations of the game that allow them to viscerally understand interviewees’ explanations of how Tetris es work. There’s a remarkable recreation of Pajitnov’s original 1985 conception of the game, which, due to the vagaries of technological change, can only be played via emulators like this. You can then skip to, say, any of the releases of Bombliss , which is Tetris but with blocks that can blow up whole parts of the screen, or Hatris, a goofy 1990 variation in which you stack hats on different characters’ heads, which Pajitnov developed with his friend Vladimir Pokhilko. (One of the many stories sadly left out of this narrative is Pokhilko’s, who was the first to conduct psychological experiments on people playing the game, and who died in a murder-suicide in 1998.) The overarching story of Tetris is distilled into the game’s new Tetris variant, Tetris Time Warp. It plays as fully traditional Tetris, except at certain moments, it will briefly shift into an earlier version, posing the player a challenge before it returns to “the modern day.” You might be transported into a game of Bombliss with the task of detonating a large bomb, or be commanded to clear two lines in the MS-DOS version of Tetris. As this newest iteration shows, Tetris is endlessly malleable and yet always recognizably itself, the gravitational center of interactive art. Tetris Forever (2024) is available now on multiple platforms. We hope you enjoyed this article! The NBA will have startups compete for a grand prize ahead of the All-Star gameKidman, Pearce, Blanchett and Watts nominated for Golden GlobesTORONTO — Canada's decision to deploy a drone to spy on a New Zealand training session at the Paris Olympics was "completely stupid," says FIFA vice-president Victor Montagliani. "In the sense that I have no idea what the hell you're going to get out of that," said Montagliani, a former Canada Soccer president who is also president of CONCACAF, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean. The scandal cost Canada women's coach Bev Priestman her job, with assistant coach Jasmine Mander and analyst Joe Lombardi also leaving Canada Soccer. All three are serving one-year suspensions from FIFA. "Now, listen, do clubs and countries push the envelope to try to gain an upper hand? Yeah," said Montagliani when asked about the scandal at a media roundtable Monday. "If we say no to that, we're fools. "We've all been into countries that will do anything they can, whether its fireworks the night before a match. Whatever they think that will get you three points. Because when it comes to football, a lot of countries think it's war. But for me personally I just thought it (the drone spying) was the definition of stupidity." FIFA, which runs the football competition at the Olympics, also docked the Canadian women six points at the tournament after a Canadian staffer was caught using a drone to spy on New Zealand team practices before the start of competition at the Paris Games. Canada Soccer was also fined 200,000 Swiss francs ($322,500). Canada Soccer continues to investigate just how deep a culture of spying was ingrained in the organization and has opened a disciplinary hearing into former Canada men's and women's coach John Herdman, who resigned as Toronto FC coach last month. "If any of this stuff reveals any new information whatsoever that's subject to FIFA jurisdiction, the FIFA ethics committee or discipline committee, or both, will act on it," Montagliani said. Montagliani says disciplinary issues in soccer usually fall under the national governing body. But Canada Soccer could refer the matter to FIFA if it has wider-ranging implications. --- Follow @NeilMDavidson on X platform This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 8, 2024. My Top Cryptocurrency to Buy Right Now (Hint: It's Not Bitcoin)LOS ANGELES — In an effort to fight the sexual exploitation of children, federal authorities will teach Los Angeles Unified School District students, staff and parents how to stay safe online. A memorandum of understanding between the nation's second-largest school district, the U.S. Attorney's Office and Homeland Security Investigations was announced Friday. HSI Los Angeles special agents, primarily from the Child Exploitation Investigations Group, will offer the so-called iGuardian trainings, which aim to educate participants about the dangers of online sexual predators and instruct them how to avoid and report abuse. The in-person training program will focus mainly on preteens and teenagers but can be tailored to younger children, as well as staff and parents, officials said in a news release . The program is part of a national campaign by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to raise awareness about online child sexual exploitation, which the agency calls a "rapidly escalating threat." That effort also stems from a long-running U.S. Department of Justice initiative that seeks to combat technology-facilitated sex crimes against children. ©2024 Los Angeles Times. Visit latimes.com . Mumbai: Indian equities are poised to build on Friday's surge-the third-strongest in a day in 2024 so far -as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition's convincing victory in the Maharashtra elections over the weekend could fuel the renewed bullish momentum. The BJP's better-than-expected performance in a key state after a disappointing show in the April-June general elections bodes well for investor sentiment , which has been dented due to slowing corporate earnings growth, signs of China's resurgence and the outcome of the US presidential elections, investors and analysts said. "The Maharashtra election was a litmus test for the BJP, especially after the disappointment in the general election," said Niket Shah, CIO, Motilal Oswal Asset Management. "Maharashtra is an important state, considering it is the largest contributor (13% of India's GDP) and the hub of equity markets, and the BJP's landslide victory is expected to boost investor sentiment." Agencies Eye on Overseas Investors "The markets were raring for an opportunity to move higher, and the Maharashtra election outcome is likely to be that trigger, but it is largely a sentimental flip," said Rohit Srivastava, founder, indiacharts.com. "An oversold market feeds on itself and the short covering Friday was just the beginning." Srivastava said the markets were waiting to move up but news of the Adani corruption indictment had dampened investor sentiment last week. Seven out of 11 Adani Group stocks rose on Friday, recouping some of the previous day's losses, when they had plummeted 6-24% in response to the US indictment against Gautam Adani and others over bribery charges. Whether the market can extend the newfound strength also depends on overseas investors, who have been on a selling spree in Indian equities in the last two months. Some expect a slowdown in activity in December and early January-when several overseas fund managers are absent over the holiday period-to fuel an upmove as domestic institutions remain buyers. Srivastava is betting on the Nifty to regain 24,500, following which it could touch 25,150 by the end of December. "Foreign investors are also likely to perceive the outcome (of the Maharashtra elections) favourably and that could lead to a slowdown in the selloff," said Shah.
