To the Editor, Shortly before the election, Sheriff Josh Greene wrote a highly inflammatory post on Facebook. Several hundred people viewed and shared the post. In this post Sheriff Greene made some very strong allegations about Commissioner Aaron Summers; and, indicated he had proof to back up the allegations. What did the good citizens of Martin County do with this information, they reelected Mr. Summers. Now that the election is over, what are our County Attorney, Council and Commissioners going to do about Sheriff Greene’s allegations? We have our chief law enforcement officer accusing one of our elected Commissioners of making threats, intimidation, misuse of county personnel and abuse of power. One would think someone in the county government would want to investigate these allegations. So far all we’ve heard are crickets, as if the post never happened. If the allegations are true it will be detrimental to all the residents of the county, as our law enforcement will continue to be ham-strung in doing their jobs. If the allegations are not true then an innocent man was wrongly vilified and deserves nothing less than a public apology. What are all of our county and city elected officials going to do? Are the Shoals and Loogootee mayors and their councils going to sit on their hands and do nothing? Do they not care about the safety and welfare of their towns and it’s residents? Where is the County Attorney or the Prosecutor? These are serious allegations that will hamper the Sheriff’s Department from doing it’s job. Yet, to date no one has seems to have had any interest in pursuing this matter. This is no longer political, it is affecting our lives. If neither the elected officials nor the citizens nor the press is interested then the old adage is correct, we deserve the government we vote for. There are some people, perhaps a minority, who don’t deserve this self-serving, protecting it’s own county government. They want answers. They want an investigation and they want to know the truth. It’s time for our county officials to look into Sheriff Greene’s allegations. If they won’t perhaps it’s time to contact the State Attorney General. A new report by the United Nations’ leading child welfare agency, UNICEF, says the number of children being recruited by the country’s violent gangs has soared by 70 percent in the last year. The unprecedented spike, registered between the second quarter of 2023 and this year, is yet another example of how children in Haiti, already kept out of school due to violence and rape by gangs, are increasingly being robbed of their childhood. “Children in Haiti are trapped in a vicious cycle — recruited into the very armed groups that are fueling their desperation, and the numbers are growing,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “This unacceptable trend must be reversed by ensuring children’s safety and welfare are prioritized by all parties.” As many as half of all members of armed gangs in Haiti are children, the U.N. said. This revelations come as Haiti sees an escalation in violence by armed groups and rising vigilantism by residents desperate to protect their neighborhoods from being overtaken. A separate report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime says that as the country finds itself trapped between escalating violence and political paralysis, criminal groups are taking advantage of the institutional collapse and political vacuum to expand their territories. “In a political-institutional vacuum, the gangs have weaponized violence to exert pressure on the system,” the report said. Last week, dozens of suspected gang leaders were killed by police and residents during an attempt to invade the upscale community of Pétion-Ville in the capital. While police put the official death toll at 28, Haiti’s National Human Rights Defense Network said the actual number killed after police intercepted three vehicles on Tuesday was 90. Overall, at least 108 people were killed over a three-day span of violence involving gangs and communities fighting back. OTTAWA - Canada’s financial intelligence agency says it is modernizing with the aim of providing valuable information to police and security officials in real time — or as close to that goal as it can get. In its newly released annual report, the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada says it is working with businesses and federal partners to move more quickly in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing. The agency, known as Fintrac, identifies money linked to illicit activities by electronically sifting millions of pieces of information each year from banks, insurance companies, money services businesses, real-estate brokers, casinos and others. In turn, it discloses intelligence to police and security agencies about the suspected cases. In 2023-24, Fintrac produced more than 4,600 financial intelligence disclosure packages for recipients including the RCMP, municipal and provincial police, the Canada Border Services Agency and the Canada Revenue Agency. In a message in the report, Fintrac director Sarah Paquet says the agency aims to harness modern skills, tools and technologies to analyze data and produce intelligence in real time. Paquet said such swiftness could be a game-changer, for example, in the agency’s efforts to track financial transactions related to human trafficking for sexual exploitation. “It will allow us to proactively identify and assist law enforcement in disrupting networks much quicker,” she said. “This will mean rescuing victims sooner, saving them from prolonged abuse.
