The Vikings have obliterated even the most optimistic of external predictions for this transitional season, taking a sparkling 13-2 record into their matchup against the Green Bay Packers that has made O'Connell the current favorite for the NFL Coach of the Year award. “It’s a credit to who he is as a person, as a coach and as a leader,” tight end T.J. Hockenson said. “We’re very fortunate to be able to play under him.” The Vikings can not only win the NFC North for a second time in three seasons, but get the No. 1 seed with a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the NFC tournament if they beat both the Packers at home on Sunday and the Detroit Lions on the road next week. Don't expect the Vikings to ponder that possibility, though, as tantalizing as it would be. “It can be a very tired cliché to talk about going 1-0 until you’ve systematically built your entire operation daily of just trying to do that every single day,” O'Connell said after Minnesota's eighth consecutive victory . “These guys, it’s not a cliché at that point. It becomes part of your football foundation and the makeup of your locker room, of your leadership, your coaching staff.” Javascript is required for you to be able to read premium content. ( More Football News ) Having scored a hat-trick in Newcastle's 4-0 win at Ipswich Town on Saturday, Isak converted Jacob Murphy's cross to put the Magpies 2-0 up after 59 minutes on Boxing Day. Anthony Gordon and Joelinton were also on target for Newcastle, who had a further three goals disallowed as Villa collapsed following Jhon Duran's first-half red card. Isak is just the sixth Newcastle player to score in five or more consecutive Premier League appearances, after Alan Shearer (three times), Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand, Papiss Cisse and Joe Willock. He has seven goals in total in those matches, and 24 in the Premier League in 2024. Only Shearer, with 27 in 2002, has ever netted more for Newcastle in a single calendar year. With the Swede firing as Newcastle finish the year on a high, Howe feels he is irreplaceable for the Magpies. "I love Alexander Isak, he has unbelievable quality. He's the right age, has the right athletic profile, I signed him and love him. I wouldn't swap him for anyone," he told Amazon Prime. BY Stats Perform "Tonight, I will go back and watch the game again and see where we can improve. We go to Manchester United on Monday with real quality and confidence." Newcastle got off to a flying start at St James' as Gordon curled a wonderful finish home within 80 seconds of kick-off, the earliest goal in a Boxing Day fixture in the Premier League since 2014, when both Adam Johnson (30 seconds for Sunderland) and Harry Kane (57 seconds for Tottenham) scored within a minute. "It's a brilliant goal from Anthony," Howe said. "He's capable of that and it was great to see that go in as he has been working hard on his finishing and wants more goals. "Yes, it was 11 versus 10 but the game was never done at 1-0 and we showed good characteristics, we were adapting with the ball and managed the situation very well. "I'm delighted with the win. We were never comfortable until the second goal and I have to complement the players and how well they are playing, it is a good set of results and performances. "We looked like we could score at any moment, the attacking players have their confidence back which is great to see and we look in a great place." Howe did feel, however, that Newcastle were fortunate to see Duran sent off following a tussle with Fabian Schar, which saw the Villa striker slip and scrape his studs down his opponent's back as the pair fell to the ground. "I thought it was maybe harsh, that was my gut feeling," Howe said of the dismissal. "I was a little surprised the red card came out."The AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll is back every week throughout the season! Middle East latest: WHO chief says he was at Yemen airport as Israeli bombs fell nearbyWEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — President-elect Donald Trump this week escalated his threats to retake control of the Panama Canal, falsely accusing Panama of allowing Chinese soldiers to control the vital shipping route and of overcharging American ships. Trump has claimed Panama charges U.S. vessels “exorbitant prices” and warned that if they are not reduced after he takes office next month, he will demand that the United States be granted control of the canal “in full, quickly and without question.” On Wednesday, Trump went on another tear. Announcing his choice for ambassador to the Central American nation, Kevin Marino Cabrera, he accused the Panamanian government of “ripping us off on the Panama Canal, far beyond their wildest dreams.” In a holiday screed on his social media site, Truth Social, Trump wished a merry Christmas to “the wonderful soldiers of China” whom he inaccurately said were operating the canal, and griped that the United States “puts in Billions of Dollars” for canal maintenance “but will have absolutely nothing to say about ‘anything.’” While it is unclear what prompted Trump’s recent obsession with the Panama Canal, some Republicans have long objected to turning it over to Panamanian control. When Ronald Reagan ran for president, he said the people of the United States were the canal’s “rightful owners” and brought audiences to their feet with the line: “We bought it; we paid for it; we built it.” The United States under President Jimmy Carter’s administration entered into two treaties, culminating in formally turning over control of the canal to the Panamanians on Dec. 31, 1999. “There’s a certain wing of the Republican Party that’s always been skeptical of the handover,” said Ryan C. Berg, the director of the Americas program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. “Complaints tend to crop up around the anniversary, and now that seems to be coming to a head because of the China issue and the desire to compete with China in the region,” he said. Here’s three important things to know about the Panama Canal as the issue moves forward. Who owns the Panama Canal? The Panama Canal was built by the United States between 1904 and 1914, and the U.S. government managed it for several decades. That situation created significant tensions with Panama over the years, and in 1964, anti-American riots broke out in the Canal Zone. The riots led to the renegotiation of the Panama Canal treaties, and in 1977 Carter and Panamanian leader Omar Efraín Torrijos signed the Torrijos-Carter Treaties. The pair of agreements guaranteed the permanent neutrality of the Panama Canal. After a period of joint custody, the treaties called for the United States to relinquish control over the canal by the year 2000. Panama took full control in 1999, and has since operated the canal through the Panama Canal Authority. In a statement of rebuke to Trump on Sunday, President José Raúl Mulino of Panama said “every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area belong to PANAMA.” Are U.S. vessels being overcharged? Mulino says they are not. Rates being charged to ships and naval vessels, he insisted, are “not on a whim.” Panamanian officials said all countries are subject to the same fees, though they would differ based on ship size. They are established in public meetings by the Panama Canal Authority, and take into account market conditions, international competition, operating and maintenance costs, Mulino said. Rates have gone up recently, however. That’s because starting in 2023, Panama experienced severe drought, driven by a combination of El Nino and climate change. With water levels at Gatun Lake, the principal hydrological reserve for the canal, at historically low levels, authorities reduced shipping through the canal to conserve the lake’s fresh water. Trump has called climate change a hoax. Does China control the Panama Canal? Chinese soldiers are not, as Trump has claimed, “operating” the Panama Canal. “There are no Chinese soldiers in the canal, for the love of God,” Mulino said in a speech Thursday. “The world is free to visit the canal.” A Hong Kong-based firm, CK Hutchison Holdings, does manage two ports at the canal’s entrances. And some experts have said that does raise valid competitive and security concerns for the United States because Hong Kong is now part of China. For example, Berg noted, the company would likely have data on all ships coming through the Panama Canal, giving it a data advantage. China also has been using its shipping and maritime operations to gather foreign intelligence and conduct espionage. “China exercises, or could exercise, a certain element of control even absent some military conflagration,” Berg said. “I think there is reason to be worried.” Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, said Tuesday that China “will as always respect Panama’s sovereignty” over the Panama Canal. China is the second-largest user of the Panama Canal after the United States. In 2017, Panama cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan and recognized it as part of China, a major win for Beijing. Can the United States reassert control? Not easily. Mulino has made clear the Panama Canal is not for sale. He noted that the treaties established permanent neutrality of the canal and “guaranteeing its open and safe operation for all nations.” And the Senate ratified the Panama Canal treaties in 1978. Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s former chief of staff, suggested that the provocations were merely part of a negotiating tactic to get rates down. “You know, I don’t envision American troops going in to retake the canal, but you got to think that someone is out there scratching their head going, ‘Is Donald Trump crazy enough to do something like that?’” Mulvaney said Tuesday on “The Hill” on NewsNation. Berg said the neutrality agreement made it unlikely that Panama would even be able to grant special rates to the United States. And, he noted, Mulino is “incredibly pro-American” and likely eager to help the incoming Trump administration deal with issues like illegal immigration. “President Mulino is going to be a great ally with the United States,” Berg said. “We should not want this to devolve into some kind of political fight because we’re going to need President Mulino on a number of other issues.” This article originally appeared in The New York Times.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Republican senators pushed back on Sunday against criticism from Democrats that Tulsi Gabbard , Donald Trump's pick to lead U.S. intelligence services , is “compromised” by her comments supportive of Russia and secret meetings , as a congresswoman, with Syria’s president, a close ally of the Kremlin and Iran. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an Illinois Democrat and veteran of combat missions in Iraq, said she had concerns about Tulsi Gabbard, Trump's choice to be director of national intelligence . “I think she’s compromised," Duckworth said on CNN’s “State of the Union," citing Gabbard's 2017 trip to Syria, where she held talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad. Gabbard was a Democratic House member from Hawaii at the time. “The U.S. intelligence community has identified her as having troubling relationships with America’s foes. And so my worry is that she couldn’t pass a background check,” Duckworth said. Gabbard, who said last month she is joining the Republican Party, has served in the Army National Guard for more than two decades. She was deployed to Iraq and Kuwait and, according to the Hawaii National Guard, received a Combat Medical Badge in 2005 for “participation in combat operations under enemy hostile fire in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III." Duckworth's comments drew immediate backlash from Republicans. “For her to say ridiculous and outright dangerous words like that is wrong," Sen. Markwayne Mullin, a Republican from Oklahoma, said on CNN, challenging Duckworth to retract her words. “That’s the most dangerous thing she could say — is that a United States lieutenant colonel in the United States Army is compromised and is an asset of Russia.” In recent days, other Democrats have accused Gabbard without evidence of being a “Russian asset.” Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, has claimed, without offering details, that Gabbard is in Russian President Vladimir “Putin’s pocket.” Mullin and others say the criticism from Democrats is rooted in the fact that Gabbard left their party and has become a Trump ally. Democrats say they worry that Gabbard's selection as national intelligence chief endangers ties with allies and gives Russia a win. Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat just elected to the Senate, said he would not describe Gabbard as a Russian asset, but said she had “very questionable judgment.” “The problem is if our foreign allies don’t trust the head of our intelligence agencies, they’ll stop sharing information with us,” Schiff said on NBC's “Meet the Press.” Gabbard in 2022 endorsed one of Russia’s justifications for invading Ukraine : the existence of dozens of U.S.-funded biolabs working on some of the world’s nastiest pathogens. The labs are part of an international effort to control outbreaks and stop bioweapons, but Moscow claimed Ukraine was using them to create deadly bioweapons. Gabbard said she just voiced concerns about protecting the labs. Gabbard also has suggested that Russia had legitimate security concerns in deciding to invade Ukraine, given its desire to join NATO. Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt of Missouri said he thought it was “totally ridiculous” that Gabbard was being cast as a Russian asset for having different political views. “It’s insulting. It’s a slur, quite frankly. There’s no evidence that she’s a asset of another country,” he said on NBC. Sen. James Lankford, another Oklahoma Republican, acknowledged having “lots of questions” for Gabbard as the Senate considers her nomination to lead the intelligence services. Lankford said on NBC that he wants to ask Gabbard about her meeting with Assad and some of her past comments about Russia. “We want to know what the purpose was and what the direction for that was. As a member of Congress, we want to get a chance to talk about past comments that she’s made and get them into full context,” Lankford said.Penn State preparing for hard-charging Jeanty and Boise State in CFP quarterfinalsNew York Giants star rookie wideout Malik Nabers (toe) missed practice Thursday and termed himself a game-day decision. He also is unsure if he will be able to participate on Friday. The Giants host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. "I'm hoping so, it all depends on how it feels tomorrow, that's really it," Nabers said Thursday. Nabers, 21, has been one of the few bright spots for the Giants and leads the team with 97 receptions for 969 yards and four touchdown catches in 13 games (12 starts). Selected sixth overall out of LSU, Nabers has caught 10 or more passes on three occasions but has just one touchdown catch over the past 10 games. Though the Giants (2-13) are mired in a franchise-worst 10-game losing streak, Nabers isn't down about the situation. "We're happy where we're at," Nabers said. "Continue to grow every day. A lot of things to fix, a lot of things we can look back on in our rookie year and continue to try to get better for next year." In addition to Nabers, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (ankle), center John Michael Schmitz (ankle), linebacker Micah McFadden (neck), cornerbacks Greg Stroman (shoulder/shin) and Dee Williams (toe) and safety Raheem Layne (knee) sat out practice Thursday. Quarterback Drew Lock (right shoulder) was a limited participant. This article first appeared on Field Level Media and was syndicated with permission.

Eagles WR DeVonta Smith (hamstring) ruled out vs. RamsSouth Korea's main opposition party, the Democratic Party (DP), has filed a motion to impeach the country's acting President and acting leader, Han Duck-soo. Han, who is from the ruling People Power Party, took on the role of acting president after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached on Dec. 14, 2024, after declaring a surprise order for martial law for six hours on Dec. 3. What comes after impeachment? However, despite his impeachment, Yoon has not been removed from his post. In South Korea, after a successful impeachment vote, the constitutional court has 180 days to rule on whether Yoon should be removed from office, or whether to reject the impeachment and restore his powers. If Yoon is removed, another presidential election must be held within 60 days. There are usually nine justices on the constitutional court, however at the moment, only six justices are serving. This poses a challenge for a successful removal of Yoon, as a ruling to remove him from office needs support from six justices. As there are only six of them at the moment, this means just one dissenting voice would be enough to allow Yoon to remain in power. And for such a politically important decision, the court would be reluctant to render a judgement without a full bench of justices. Why is the opposition doing this? The opposition party therefore moved to impeach Han due to his refusal to appoint three justices to complete the constitutional court's nine-member bench , reported Korean news agency Yonhap. The justices were nominated by the National Assembly (equivalent to Singapore's Parliament). At the moment, the opposition party has a majority of the members in the assembly, not the party of Yoon and Han. Han also refused to review two opposition-sponsored bills that called for investigations into the declaration of martial law and alleged corruption by First Lady Kim Keon Hee, according to the BBC . DP's party leader Park Chan Dae coined Han's actions as "prolonging the insurrection, adding that Han is " is neither qualified nor willing to defend the constitution." Why is Han refusing to appoint new justices? Explaining his refusal to appoint the justices in a national address on Dec. 26, Han said that he will not appoint them until rival parties can "reach a consensus". " It is the consistent spirit of our Constitution and laws that the acting president refrain from exercising the vital and exclusive authority of the president, including appointments to constitutional institutions," said Han, according to Yonhap . He added that both the ruling and opposition parties needed to first "reach an agreement" about the use of his powers as acting president to appoint justices, and would "defer" the appointment until both had reached an agreement. "Once the ruling and opposition parties submit an agreed-upon measure, I will immediately appoint the Constitutional Court justices." Impeachment vote likely to occur on Dec. 27 By law, an impeachment motion must be put to a vote between 24 to 72 hours after a motion has been filed. Hence, the vote to impeach Han is likely to take place during a plenary session on Dec. 27. For the impeachment of Han to succeed, 151 of 300 votes must be cast in favour for it, reported BBC . India traditionally observes an official mourning period for former Prime Ministers, with the central government deciding whether to declare a public holiday. Tributes - Tributes poured in from political leaders, reflecting on Singh's legacy as a leader and economist. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, tweeting, "Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives." Omar Abdullah described Manmohan Singh as an "intellectual giant." "Very sorry to hear about the demise of former PM Dr Manmohan Singh. I had many occasions to interact & learn from him. Jakes experienced a "slight health incident" during a Sunday sermon in Dallas on Sunday, his church wrote in a statement. The well-known bishop, who boasts over 4.5 million followers on X, formerly Twitter , posted a statement from The Potter's House megachurch where he preaches at, reading: "During today's service, Bishop T.D. Jakes experienced a slight health incident and received immediate medical attention following his powerful hour-long message." The statement added that "Jakes is stable and under the care of medical professionals. The entire Potter's House family is grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from the community. Thank you for your understanding and continued prayers." A spokesperson for the church on Sunday afternoon sent Newsweek the official statement and provided no additional comment. Unverified videos of Jakes' sermon online show the pastor unable to rise from his chair, potentially losing consciousness, with his body jolting. People rushed to his side before the livestream video cut off, and the audience can hear a prayer being said for Jakes. Newsweek has not been able to access the livestream as of Sunday afternoon. The Potter's House, which Jakes founded in 1996, is a non-denominational, multicultural church, that, according to its website, has more than 30,000 members. Given that the church livestreams sermons, it is likely many members join from afar. The church primarily operates out of Dallas, however, "accelerated growth and shifting demographics have necessitated expansion to additional sites in North Dallas (Frisco, Texas,) Fort Worth, Texas and Denver." Jakes is also an author of several books and is the owner and CEO of T.D. Jakes Enterprises. On November 21, T.D. Jakes Enterprises acquired an e-commerce technology start up, Castiron, which, according to the press release, will allow the company to launch "Nourysh." "We know all too well that building your own business is difficult. To help simplify this for many small and underrepresented entrepreneurs across the country, we have created an all-in-one e-commerce platform to help small businesses across the country scale up and create the access needed to their products, further helping nourish the dreams of entrepreneurship," Jakes said earlier this week in a press release about the acquisition. Meanwhile, Jakes is also among the names in a court filing in connection with music producer Rodney Jones' $30 million lawsuit against music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs. Jones filed his lawsuit on February 26, making a number of accusations against Combs, including sexual misconduct and grooming. Jones has also accused Combs of participating in sex-trafficking activity. Attorneys for Combs have strongly denied the allegations, previously telling Newsweek , "We have overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies." Jakes, is not accused of anything in the lawsuit. According to the court documents, Jones alleges that Combs "planned to leverage his relationship with Bishop T.D. Jakes to soften the impact on his public image of Cassie Ventura's lawsuit ."

The Los Angeles Clippers have solidified their home court advantage with seven straight wins at home. Can the Intuit Dome prove to be a tough place for opponents to play? LA is very sports-oriented when it comes to the diversity of fans and how much they love their teams. It’s also a place where tradition is taken seriously from generation to generation by fans. Clippers Win Seven Straight in First Full Month at Intuit Dome In the month of October and to start November, LA had not really established their home court dominance, especially in the very beginning. They lost their first four home games against the Phoenix Suns twice, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Clippers lost the first three by an average margin of 3.3 points, showing signs of not being able to close out games. After struggling on the road in Oklahoma City and Houston, and still without star Kawhi Leonard , there wasn’t much to lean on coming back home, but that all changed. Needing wins to cement themselves as a playoff contender in the Western Conference, the team finally got back on track at home. The Clippers have beaten some mediocre teams, but also some better teams such as the Golden State Warriors at home in November. How Did the Clippers Get Here? Down by 26 points after one quarter, the Clippers rallied to win their first game at the Intuit Dome against the San Antonio Spurs. The next game resulted in a win against the underachieving Philadelphia 76ers. That was followed by a nail-biting win against the Toronto Raptors. The Clippers then lost three in a row on the road, before getting a win in Utah against the Jazz. Finally getting back home to Inglewood, LA rattled four straight key victories. The Clippers secured wins against the Utah Jazz, Golden Warriors, Orlando Magic and an NBA Cup game against the Sacramento Kings. It seems like head coach Tyronn Lue has figured out a way to win games that they are expected to win and make a statement against the best teams in the league. The Intuit Dome Creates a New Legacy for the Clippers The Intuit Dome was built for the hope that Clippers fans show up and show out at every home game. Finally having their own arena and being out of the shadow of the Lakers in downtown LA, the Clippers have something to call their own. It’s a bit ironic that the Intuit Dome is neighbors directly with The Forum where the Lakers called home and cemented their legacy. The LA Clippers have released rules for "The Wall" — the Intuit Dome's new section of 51 uninterrupted rows of fans. • Cannot cheer for opposing team • Cannot wear opponent gear • Tickets can only be resold in Clippers marketplace A season on "The Wall" ranges from $5K-$25K. pic.twitter.com/7hQEfDizdo — Front Office Sports (@FOS) January 16, 2024 However, in a new generation in Clippers basketball, owner Steve Ballmer created a new identity for the Clippers.
