State charges were also filed Wednesday in Florida against two of the brothers and a third man stemming from three alleged sexual assaults over the past decade. Federal prosecutors allege in the New York indictment that Oren and Tal Alexander, known for brokering deals on high-end properties in New York City and Miami, and sibling Alon Alexander used their wealth and influence to take advantage of victims from at least 2010 to 2021. “This conduct was heinous,” U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams said at a news conference in his Manhattan office. The brothers, who all reside in Miami, used “deception, fraud, and coercion” to entice victims to travel with them or attend parties or events in which they covered flights, hotels and other expenses, according to the indictment. They also at times used the promise of a romantic relationship, it said. The women were then drugged and raped by one or more of the brothers, as well as other men, the U.S. Attorney said. After the assaults, the brothers often gave their victims concert tickets and luxury items, Williams added. The brothers typically met their victims on dating apps, through social events and at bars and nightclubs, but they also used party promoters to “source” women, according to Williams. He added that the women were often provided drugs, including cocaine, psychedelic mushrooms and GHB. The brothers even surreptitiously drugged some of the women’s drinks, leaving them physically impaired and unable to fight back or escape from the sexual assaults, prosecutors said in their indictment. "In some instances, the defendants physically restrained and held down their victims during the rapes and sexual assaults and ignored screams and explicit requests to stop,'' the indictment said. In the Florida cases, state prosecutors described one incident in December 2016 as a “gang rape” of a woman who said she was invited to a barbecue at Alon Alexander’s Miami Beach apartment only to discover no one there, save Alon, his brother Oren and another man. The woman, who is not named, said she was led into a bedroom where the brothers argued over who would rape her first as she pleaded with them not to assault her, according to Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. The second incident, in October 2017, involved a woman who said she was sexually assaulted by Oren Alexander at his apartment following a real estate event. The woman said she was given a glass of wine that made her feel weak and unable to control her body before she was attacked, according to prosecutors. They said the third incident happened in October 2021 and involved a woman who said she was assaulted by Oren Alexander after going out to dinner with him and then going back to his residence with some of her friends. Williams, the U.S. Attorney in New York, said the three brothers were arrested in Florida on Wednesday and will appear in Miami federal court before being brought to New York to answer to the charges. He declined to say if others also will be charged and urged any other possible victims to come forward as the investigation is ongoing. “They were not acting alone,” Williams said. A lawyer representing one of the brothers denied the charges, which include one count of engaging in a sex trafficking conspiracy for each sibling. "Oren Alexander is innocent," attorney Susan Necheles wrote in an email. “The evidence will show that neither he nor his brothers ever committed a crime.” Lawyers for the other brothers did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment. Bradley Moss, a lawyer in Washington who specializes in national security work, has his doubts, and said Wray should have forced Trump to fire him, given the man Trump wants to replace him with. “Utterly spineless. By doing this, Director Wray has guaranteed the very thing he was supposed to avoid: the FBI becoming a politicized institution,” Moss said. “If there was any question that going forward the position of director will change every time the party in power changes, something the Watergate statutory reforms were supposed to prevent, that idea is dead.” FBI directors serve 10-year terms as a result of a post-Watergate reform implemented after President Richard Nixon tried to use both the FBI and the CIA to cover up his attempts to cheat in the 1972 election by spying on the Democratic Party . Not long after Wray announced his decision, Trump — a convicted criminal who eluded federal charges by winning back the presidency — continued lying about his prosecutions and the FBI’s role in them. “Under the leadership of Christopher Wray, the FBI illegally raided my home, without cause, worked diligently on illegally impeaching and indicting me, and has done everything else to interfere with the success and future of America,” Trump posted on social media. In fact, the search of Trump’s South Florida country club was approved by a federal judge. Agents who executed the warrant found dozens of secret documents that Trump had refused to turn over despite a subpoena demanding that he do so. Further, Wray had nothing to do with either of Trump’s impeachments — the first in 2020 for his attempt to extort Ukraine into smearing Biden; the second for his Jan. 6, 2021, coup attempt. Both impeachments were carried out by the House of Representatives. In May 2017, Trump fired then-FBI director James Comey after he refused to pledge Trump his personal loyalty. Trump replaced him with Wray, who at the time was in the private sector after having served in the Justice Department under President George W. Bush. Mark Warner, a Democratic senator from Virginia who will soon go from chair to ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he was sorry to see Wray step down. “I understand that Director Wray is simply trying to do what he has always done – which is act with integrity – and I thank him for the principled leadership he brought to the FBI and for his service to the country,” Warner said in a statement. Patel, who worked in Trump’s first administration in various roles but seemed most interested in undermining evidence that Russia had helped Trump win in 2016, said in an interview last year that he would go after Trump’s critics if Trump returned to the White House. “We will go out and find the conspirators, not just in the government, but in the media,” Patel said . “Yes, we’re going to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections. We’re going to come after you. Whether it’s criminally or civilly, we’ll figure that out, but yeah, we’re putting you all on notice.” In fact, no one helped Biden “rig” any election. Biden beat Trump by 7 million votes in 2020. Nonetheless, in a book he wrote called “Government Gangsters,” Patel laid out in an appendix the names of 60 people who may need going after. They include former Trump Attorney General Bill Barr, former Trump press secretary Stephanie Grisham, former Trump Defense Secretary Mark Esper as well as Biden, Harris, and Trump’s 2016 opponent, Hillary Clinton. And the legal fight over the ability to fire Wray given the statutory protection instituted post-Watergate would have been bloody,” he said. With US government agencies and lawmakers reportedly considering a ban on TP-Link's products in the United States, one might think the company would rank high on the list of networking vendors with the most vulnerabilities currently being exploited by cyberattackers. Not by a long shot. The Chinese firm, whose products are popular among consumers and small businesses, currently has two security issues gracing the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) list curated by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), compared with 74 for Cisco Systems, 23 for Ivanti, and 20 for D-Link. Yet US government officials' concern is less about known vulnerabilities, and more about unknown risks, including its routers' popularity in the United States — where it accounts for about two-thirds of the market — and the degree to which the company is beholden to China's government. While no researcher has called out a specific backdoor or zero-day vulnerability in TP-Link routers, restricting products from a country that is a political and economic rival is not unreasonable, says Thomas Pace, CEO of extended Internet of Things (IoT) security firm NetRise and a former head of cybersecurity for the US Department of Energy. "The value to me [of a ban] is almost more around economic policy value than pure technical cybersecurity value," he says. "To me, there is value in saying you shouldn't buy these things because of X, Y, and Z reasons [and to make it] more difficult for small businesses, or whoever, to get their hands on devices from these companies." Related: BlackBerry to Sell Cylance to Arctic Wolf In April 2024, one of two TP-Link vulnerabilities attracted the most vulnerability scanning by threat actors, according to an analysis by cloud and application-security firm F5. The issue, a command injection vulnerability for TP-Link's Archer AX21 router ( CVE-2023-1389 ), allows an unauthenticated attacker to easily compromise a device via a simple POST request. In another incident, security firm Check Point Software Technologies discovered that TP-Link devices were also compromised with an implant known as Camaro Dragon . The implanted components were discovered in modified TP-Link firmware images, and not the original software shipped by the company, says Itay Cohen, research lead at Check Point Research. Yet Cohen stresses that the implants were written in a firmware-agnostic manner and not specific to any particular product or vendor. "It is worth noting that this kind of attack is not aimed specifically at sensitive networks, but rather at regular residential and home networks," he says. "Therefore, infecting a home router does not necessarily mean that the homeowner was a specific target, but rather that their device was merely a means to an end for the attackers ." Related: Versa Introduces Integrated Endpoint Data Loss Prevention in SASE Solution The threat posed by such vulnerabilities and implants are real, but the data from the KEV catalog shows that other manufacturers are just as likely to have their vulnerabilities exploited — and there are more of them. The lesson is that vulnerabilities in embedded devices are not unique to any one manufacturer or country of origin, says Sonu Shankar, chief product officer at Phosphorus Cybersecurity, an extended IoT cybersecurity provider. "Nation-state actors frequently exploit weaknesses in devices from companies worldwide, including those sold by American manufacturers," he says. "Devices lacking basic security hygiene — such as the use of strong passwords, timely firmware patching, or proper configurations — can become easy targets for cyberattacks." TP-Link stressed this fact in a statement sent to Dark Reading. "Many brands of consumer electronics are targeted by hackers, and we support government efforts to hold all producers to the same standard," a company spokesperson said. "We welcome opportunities to engage with the federal government to demonstrate that our security practices are fully in line with industry security standards, and to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to the American market, American consumers, and addressing US national security risks." Related: Test Your Cyber Skills With the SANS Holiday Hack Challenge But those assertions may be minimizing the influence of the Chinese government on the company's operations: Most Western companies do not understand the degree to which Chinese officials monitor China's business sectors — and cybersecurity firms — as a component of government policy and national strategy, NetRise's Pace says. "It's a totally different business culture," he says. "There is a member of the PRC in every company — that's not even like an opinion, it's just how it is. And if you think they're not there to exert their influence, then you're just an unbelievably naive person, because that's exactly what they do, [including] for the purposes of intelligence gathering." Threat intelligence analysts have flagged the Chinese government national strategy documents and evidence showing their increasing efforts to compromise rival nations' infrastructure — such as the attacks by Volt Typhoon and Salt Typhoon . "In recent years we see Chinese threat actors’ increasing interest in compromising edge devices, aiming to both build resilient and more anonymous C2 infrastructures, and to gain a foothold in certain targeted networks," Check Point stated in its analysis, but added that the "discovery of the firmware-agnostic nature of the implanted components indicates that a wide range of devices and vendors may be at risk." China's networking products are not alone in being targeted by the US government, which also banned the products of antivirus firm Kaspersky because of national security concerns, given that it's a Russian company. Companies and consumers should do their due diligence, keep their devices up to date with the latest security patches, and consider whether the manufacturer of their critical hardware may have secondary motives, says Phosphorus Cybersecurity's Shankar. "The vast majority of successful attacks on IoT are enabled by preventable issues like static, unchanged default passwords, or unpatched firmware, leaving systems exposed," he says. "For business operators and consumer end-users, the key takeaway is clear: adopting basic security hygiene is a critical defense against both opportunistic and sophisticated attacks. Don’t leave the front door open." For companies worried about the origin of their networking devices or the security their supply chain, finding a trusted third party to manage the devices is a reasonable option. In reality, though, almost every device should be monitored and not trusted, says NetRise's Pace. "It's a crazy world that exists when it comes to device security," he says. "You're accepting this device that you know nothing about — and that you really can't know anything about — unlike Windows [or another operating system] ... where you can also install three agents and a firewall in front of it to mitigate the risk of the software." The bad news is, just weeks away from a yearlong Roman Catholic celebration expected to bring up to 35 million to the city, much of the restoration work is yet to be finished. The jubilee celebration is a regular Catholic Church event, instituted by Pope Boniface VIII in 1300 and held every 25 years since 1470. It pulls huge numbers of pilgrims to Rome and the Vatican seeking forgiveness. During celebrations, the "holy doors" of Rome's major basilica churches, normally cemented shut, are opened. Visitors who pass through the doors and carry out spiritual acts will receive plenary indulgences — forgiveness for their sins. "Rome is not ready, it is chaotic," says Sylwia Wysocka, a journalist who has been covering the Vatican and Italy for the Polish Press Agency (PAP) for more than two decades. "Romans are mad. I hear it every time I get on the bus." Riccardo Abate, a guide who shows visitors around on the back of his Vespa scooter, says that he and Scooteroma, the company he works for, have found traffic caused by the works to be challenging. "Being in a car is no fun." But, he says, the jubilee deadline is at least pushing the city to complete projects that could otherwise drag on. "Many of the works would have taken much longer without a deadline," he adds. And the "changes mean that Romans will benefit from these improvements long after jubilee, so the pain is worth it." Eugenio Patanè, Rome's deputy mayor of mobility, says whatever the readiness of various parts of the city, it will be able to cope. "Like all capitals, we are constantly under the pressure from tourism and frequent mega events," he says. "Rome is a city where we embrace these challenges and welcome visitors, so these big events don't scare us. We know how to adapt to the pressure." Meanwhile, Rome's mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, insists everything is running to schedule. "Yes, we are working very hard for the Jubilee and all the construction sites that are supposed to be ready for the jubilee and finished by December will be finished by December — so there will be new things to admire in Rome next year," he tells CNN. Pope Francis has called for the jubilee's spirit of absolution to be extended beyond Rome, calling for richer countries to forgive the debts of poorer nations, and for governments to issue pardons or amnesties for individual prisoners. On December 26, Francis will become the first pope to open a holy door in a prison when he travels to Rome's Rebibbia detention facility. The Vatican is also planning special events with an array of groups including sportspeople and "digital missionaries and Catholic influencers" and has created a special jubilee mascot, Luce, a cartoon character dressed as a pilgrim, to try and better engage the church with pop culture. September 1, 2027 Symvess is a first-in-class bioengineered human tissue that is designed to be a universally implantable vascular conduit for use in arterial replacement and repair. Because harvesting vein from a trauma patient can take time during surgery, Symvess is available off-the-shelf, which does not require potential further injury to the patient to obtain vascular repair material via an invasive surgery. The Symvess trauma program was granted regenerative medicine advanced therapy designation by the FDA in May 2023, and in February 2024, it received a priority review. “The approval of a vascular conduit that resists infection and remodels into native arteries is an extraordinary technological advancement that will have a huge impact on the quality of trauma care around the world,” Charles J. Fox, MD, FACS, director of Vascular Surgery at the University of Maryland Capital Region, said in a news release. “Symvess is perfectly sized to treat most injuries, has excellent handling properties, and reduces time necessary to save both life and limbs.” The V005 (NCT03005418) trial, also called CLN-PRO-V005, is a prospective, multicenter, multi-cohort, non-randomized phase 2/3 study which enrolled patients with life- or limb-threatening vascular trauma which requires surgical repair. A limb cohort includes patients who require repair of a vessel contained to the upper or lower extremity, and a torso cohort includes patients who require repair of vessels within the thorax (excluding the heart), abdomen, and retroperitoneum. No control arms are included in this study. All patients received the investigational Symvess, which were used for arterial bypass or reconstruction. The device is implanted using a standard vascular surgical technique, similar to those used to place predicate peripheral vascular prostheses. The primary outcome measures are primary patency (defined as the interval from the time of access placement until any intervention designed to maintain or reestablish patency, access thrombosis or the measurement of patency), which was assessed at 30 days, and frequency and severity of adverse events (AEs), which was assessed at 36 months. A total of 69 patients with a mean age of 33.5 years were enrolled in the trial, of which the majority were male (n = 38). At day 30, the primary patency was approximately 84.3% (95% CI, 72.0%-91.8%) and secondary patency was 90.2% (95% CI, 79.0%-95.7%). Additionally, amputation rate was about 9.8% (95% CI, 4.3%-21.0%). Infection and death rates were also low, occurring in about 2.0% (95% CI, 0.4%-10.3%) and 5.9% (95% CI, 2.0%-15.9%) of patients, respectively. “I believe that Symvess will revolutionize vascular trauma care and be profoundly beneficial to our patients,” Rishi Kundi, MD, surgical critical care of vascular surgery at the University of Maryland Medical System, said in the news release. “From my experience so far, Symvess will allow reconstructions that are currently impracticable because of contamination and infection. It will make reconstructions that we now perform with prosthetic or even biologic grafts more successful.” Overall, AEs and serious AEs were frequent in V005 consistent with patients with acute injuries. According to the investigators, AEs of special interest, including thrombosis, rupture, aneurysm, and pseudoaneurysm, occurred at acceptable rates that were consistent with reports of other vascular conduits, including autologous vein and synthetic grafts. At 30 days, AEs of interest were reported for 8 patients and included thromboses and occlusions (resolved or unresolved), nonspontaneous rupture (n = 1), and infection of the conduit (n = 1). Additionally, all enrolled patients receiving Symvess presented multiple risk factors that could lead to wound infection, of which 20 patients developed 1 or more infectious events by day 30 (eg, bacteremia, fungemia, sepsis, and osteomyelitis). “The FDA approval of Symvess will make it the preferred conduit for complex vascular injuries, and particularly those at risk for infection,” Ernest E. Moore, MD, FACS, director of Research at the Ernest E. Moore Shock Trauma Center at Denver Health, said in the news release.

Buffett has said previously that his three kids will distribute his remaining $147.4 billion fortune in the 10 years after his death, but now he has also designated successors for them because it's possible that Buffett's children could die before giving it all away. Each year, at least 100,000 kids call into the North American Aerospace Defense Command to inquire about Santa’s location. Millions more follow online in nine languages , from English to Japanese. On any other night, NORAD is scanning the heavens for potential threats , such as last year’s Chinese spy balloon . But on Christmas Eve, volunteers in Colorado Springs are fielding questions like, “When is Santa coming to my house?” and, “Am I on the naughty or nice list?” “There are screams and giggles and laughter,” said Bob Sommers, 63, a civilian contractor and NORAD volunteer. Sommers often says on the call that everyone must be asleep before Santa arrives, prompting parents to say, “Do you hear what he said? We got to go to bed early.” NORAD’s annual tracking of Santa has endured since the Cold War , predating ugly sweater parties and Mariah Carey classics . The tradition continues regardless of government shutdowns, such as the one in 2018 , and this year . Here’s how it began and why the phones keep ringing. The origin story is Hollywood-esque It started with a child’s accidental phone call in 1955. The Colorado Springs newspaper printed a Sears advertisement that encouraged children to call Santa, listing a phone number. A boy called. But he reached the Continental Air Defense Command, now NORAD, a joint U.S. and Canadian effort to spot potential enemy attacks. Tensions were growing with the Soviet Union, along with anxieties about nuclear war. Air Force Col. Harry W. Shoup picked up an emergency-only “red phone” and was greeted by a tiny voice that began to recite a Christmas wish list. “He went on a little bit, and he takes a breath, then says, ‘Hey, you’re not Santa,’” Shoup told The Associated Press in 1999. Realizing an explanation would be lost on the youngster, Shoup summoned a deep, jolly voice and replied, “Ho, ho, ho! Yes, I am Santa Claus. Have you been a good boy?” Shoup said he learned from the boy’s mother that Sears mistakenly printed the top-secret number. He hung up, but the phone soon rang again with a young girl reciting her Christmas list. Fifty calls a day followed, he said. In the pre-digital age, the agency used a 60-by-80 foot (18-by-24 meter) plexiglass map of North America to track unidentified objects. A staff member jokingly drew Santa and his sleigh over the North Pole. The tradition was born. “Note to the kiddies,” began an AP story from Colorado Springs on Dec. 23, 1955. “Santa Claus Friday was assured safe passage into the United States by the Continental Air Defense Command.” In a likely reference to the Soviets, the article noted that Santa was guarded against possible attack from “those who do not believe in Christmas.” Is the origin story humbug? Some grinchy journalists have nitpicked Shoup’s story, questioning whether a misprint or a misdial prompted the boy’s call. In 2014, tech news site Gizmodo cited an International News Service story from Dec. 1, 1955, about a child’s call to Shoup. Published in the Pasadena Independent, the article said the child reversed two digits in the Sears number. “When a childish voice asked COC commander Col. Harry Shoup, if there was a Santa Claus at the North Pole, he answered much more roughly than he should — considering the season: ‘There may be a guy called Santa Claus at the North Pole, but he’s not the one I worry about coming from that direction,’” Shoup said in the brief piece. In 2015, The Atlantic magazine doubted the flood of calls to the secret line, while noting that Shoup had a flair for public relations. Phone calls aside, Shoup was indeed media savvy. In 1986, he told the Scripps Howard News Service that he recognized an opportunity when a staff member drew Santa on the glass map in 1955. A lieutenant colonel promised to have it erased. But Shoup said, “You leave it right there,” and summoned public affairs. Shoup wanted to boost morale for the troops and public alike. “Why, it made the military look good — like we’re not all a bunch of snobs who don’t care about Santa Claus,” he said. Shoup died in 2009. His children told the StoryCorps podcast in 2014 that it was a misprinted Sears ad that prompted the phone calls. “And later in life he got letters from all over the world,” said Terri Van Keuren, a daughter. “People saying ‘Thank you, Colonel, for having, you know, this sense of humor.’” A rare addition to Santa’s story NORAD’s tradition is one of the few modern additions to the centuries-old Santa story that have endured, according to Gerry Bowler, a Canadian historian who spoke to the AP in 2010. Ad campaigns or movies try to “kidnap” Santa for commercial purposes, said Bowler, who wrote “Santa Claus: A Biography.” NORAD, by contrast, takes an essential element of Santa’s story and views it through a technological lens. In a recent interview with the AP, Air Force Lt. Gen. Case Cunningham explained that NORAD radars in Alaska and Canada —- known as the northern warning system — are the first to detect Santa. He leaves the North Pole and typically heads for the international dateline in the Pacific Ocean. From there he moves west, following the night. “That’s when the satellite systems we use to track and identify targets of interest every single day start to kick in,” Cunningham said. “A probably little-known fact is that Rudolph’s nose that glows red emanates a lot of heat. And so those satellites track (Santa) through that heat source.” NORAD has an app and website, www.noradsanta.org , that will track Santa on Christmas Eve from 4 a.m. to midnight, mountain standard time.
