Flagg's growth, Broome's consistency show in matchup of AP All-AmericansZURICH — Saudi Arabia was officially confirmed Wednesday by FIFA as host of the 2034 World Cup in men's soccer, giving the oil-rich kingdom its biggest prize yet for massive spending on global sports driven by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The Saudi bid was the only candidate and was acclaimed by the applause of more than 200 FIFA member federations. They took part remotely in an online meeting hosted in Zurich by the soccer body's president Gianni Infantino. "The vote of the congress is loud and clear," said Infantino, who had asked officials on a bank of screens to clap their hands at head level to show their support. The decision was combined with approving the only candidate to host the 2030 World Cup. Spain, Portugal and Morocco will co-host in a six-nation project, with Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay each getting one of the 104 games. The South American connection will mark the centenary of Uruguay hosting the first World Cup in 1930. The decisions complete a mostly opaque 15-month bid process which Infantino helped steer toward Saudi Arabia without a rival candidate, without taking questions, and which human rights groups warn will put the lives of migrant workers at risk. "We look forward to hosting an exceptional and unprecedented edition of the FIFA World Cup by harnessing our strengths and capabilities to bring joy to football fans around the world," Prince Mohammed said in a statement. FIFA and Saudi officials have said hosting the 2034 tournament can accelerate change, including more freedoms and rights for women, with Infantino on Wednesday calling the World Cup a "unique catalyst for positive social change and unity." "I fully trust our hosts to address all open points in this process, and deliver a World Cup that meets the world's expectations," the FIFA president said. An international collective of rights groups said FIFA made a "reckless decision" to approve Saudi Arabia without getting public assurances, and the Football Supporters Europe group said it was "the day football truly lost its mind." A fast-track path to victory was cleared last year by FIFA accepting the three-continent hosting plan for the 2030 World Cup. It meant only soccer federations in Asia and Oceania were eligible for the 2034 contest, and FIFA gave countries less than four weeks to declare a bid. Only Saudi Arabia did. The win will kick off a decade of scrutiny on Saudi labor laws and treatment of workers mostly from South Asia needed to help build and upgrade 15 stadiums, plus hotels and transport networks ahead of the 104-game tournament. Amnesty International said awarding the tournament to Saudi Arabia represents "a moment of great danger" for human rights. "FIFA's reckless decision to award the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia without ensuring adequate human rights protections are in place will put many lives at risk," said Steve Cockburn, Amnesty International's Head of Labor Rights and Sport." One of the stadiums is planned to be 350 meters (yards) above the ground in Neom — a futuristic city that does not yet exist — and another named for the crown prince is designed to be atop a 200-meter cliff near Riyadh. During the bid campaign, FIFA has accepted limited scrutiny of Saudi Arabia's human rights record that was widely criticized this year at the United Nations. Saudi and international rights groups and activists warned FIFA it has not learned the lessons of Qatar's much-criticized preparations to host the 2022 World Cup. "At every stage of this bidding process, FIFA has shown its commitment to human rights to be a sham," Cockburn said. The kingdom plans to spend tens of billion of dollars on projects related to the World Cup as part of the crown prince's sweeping Vision 2030 project that aims to modernize Saudi society and economy. At its core is spending on sports by the $900 billion sovereign wealth operation, the Public Investment Fund, which he oversees. "It's amazing. The infrastructure, the stadiums, the conditions for the fans and everything. After what I see, I'm more convinced that 2034 will be the best World Cup ever," Cristiano Ronaldo said in a recorded package posted on X. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has been part of Saudi Arabia's lavish spending on soccer — stunning the sport when agreeing to sign for Al Nassr in 2022 for a record-breaking salary reportedly worth up to $200 million a year. Critics have accused Saudi Arabia of "sportswashing" the kingdom's reputation. The prince, known as MBS, has built close working ties to Infantino since 2017 — aligning with the organizer of sport's most-watched event rather than directly confronting the established system as it did with the disruptive LIV Golf project. The result for Saudi Arabia and FIFA has been smooth progress toward the win Wednesday with limited pushback from soccer officials, though some from women international players. The steady flow of Saudi cash into international soccer is set to increase. FIFA created a new and higher World Cup sponsor category for state oil firm Aramco, and Saudi funding is set to underwrite the 2025 Club World Cup in the United States that is a pet project for Infantino. North American soccer body CONCACAF signed a multi-year deal with PIF, Saudi stadiums host Super Cup games for Italy and Spain, and nearly 50 FIFA member federations have signed working agreements with Saudi counterparts. Lavish spending by PIF-owned Saudi clubs in the past two years buying and paying players – including Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Karim Benzema and Sadio Mané – put hundreds of millions of dollars into European soccer. That influence could be key in talks to agree which months to play the 2034 World Cup. The November-December slot taken by Qatar in 2022 to avoid extreme midsummer heat is complicated in 2034 by the holy month of Ramadan through mid-December and Riyadh hosting the multi-sport Asian Games. Still, January 2034 could be an option — and likely better for European clubs and leagues —after the International Olympic Committee said it saw few issues in clashing with the Salt Lake Winter Games opening Feb. 10, 2034. The IOC also has a major commercial deal with Saudi Arabia, to host the new Esports Olympics. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Sir Keir Starmer has been warned by a trade union not to impose “blunt headcount targets” for the size of the Civil Service but Government sources insisted there would be no set limit, although the number “cannot keep growing”. Departments have been ordered to find 5% “efficiency savings” as part of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ spending review, potentially putting jobs at risk. The size of the Civil Service has increased from a low of around 384,000 in mid-2016, and the Tories went into the general election promising to reduce numbers by 70,000 to fund extra defence spending. Any reduction under Labour would be more modest, with the Guardian reporting more than 10,000 jobs could be lost. A Government spokesman said: “Under our plan for change, we are making sure every part of government is delivering on working people’s priorities — delivering growth, putting more money in people’s pockets, getting the NHS back on its feet, rebuilding Britain and securing our borders in a decade of national renewal. “We are committed to making the Civil Service more efficient and effective, with bold measures to improve skills and harness new technologies.” Mike Clancy, general secretary of the Prospect trade union said: “We need a clear plan for the future of the civil service that goes beyond the blunt headcount targets that have failed in the past. “This plan needs to be developed in partnership with civil servants and their unions, and we look forward to deeper engagement with the government in the coming months.” A Government source said: “The number of civil servants cannot keep growing. “But we will not set an arbitrary cap. “The last government tried that and ended up spending loads on more expensive consultants.” The Government is already risking a confrontation with unions over proposals to limit pay rises for more than a million public servants to 2.8%, a figure only just over the projected 2.6% rate of inflation next year. Unions representing teachers, doctors and nurses have condemned the proposals. In the face of the union backlash, Downing Street said the public sector must improve productivity to justify real-terms pay increases. The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “It’s vital that pay awards are fair for both taxpayers and workers.” Asked whether higher pay settlements to staff would mean departmental cuts elsewhere, the spokesman said: “Real-terms pay increases must be matched by productivity gains and departments will only be able to fund pay awards above inflation over the medium-term if they become more productive and workforces become more productive.” TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: “It’s hard to see how you address the crisis in our services without meaningful pay rises. “And it’s hard to see how services cut to the bone by 14 years of Tory government will find significant cash savings. “The Government must now engage unions and the millions of public sector workers we represent in a serious conversation about public service reform and delivery.”

By KAITLYN HUAMANI The commencement of the holiday season often means the lengthening of to-do lists. There are lights to hang, cards to mail , cookies to bake and, of course, gifts to buy . Gift exchanges, whether they’re among friends, family or co-workers, can be a fun way to get in the holiday spirit. But can also be another stressor during a busy time of year. Secret Santa exchanges — where participants are assigned a gift recipient and tasked with finding them a perfect present within a price limit — sometimes mean that those in friend groups are paired with “frenemies,” someone inevitably draws themselves, or colleagues who are virtually strangers are matched up. Those possible pitfalls inspired Peter Imburg to create Elfster , a free online Secret Santa organizer, after he saw the time and effort it took to coordinate the logistics of a gift exchange with his family over 20 years ago. More top-down organization, he says, helps things run more smoothly. Elfster, for instance, creates pairings, asks for wish lists, offers gift suggestions at different price points and sends reminders, among other features meant to make the organizational hurdles of a gift exchange less daunting. “The organizer is like the hero. They make it all happen,” Imburg said, adding that his site aims “to make it a lot easier for the organizer to do that with a minimal amount of effort.” Cameron Rogers, a New Jersey-based social media content creator and podcast host on wellness and motherhood, understands the stress that gift exchanges can bring up. “Having to give generic gifts to people I’m not necessarily close with is extremely difficult,” Rogers said. “I can pick a good gift for my husband or my kids or my mom, but for people who I don’t know the ins and outs of their lives, I think it’s hard to pick something that you know they’re actually going to enjoy.” Related Articles Health | Does the approach to treating opioid addiction need a radical overhaul? Health | States poised to end coverage for millions if Trump cuts Medicaid funding She recently shared a guide to Secret Santa gifts under $50 on her social media channels, emphasizing how challenging it can be to find something within a set price range that will be well-received. Gifts with a specific purpose — kitchen gadgets, home items or winter gear — and gifts that have a personalized aspect like a monogram are good go-to options for anyone feeling lost after receiving their Secret Santa assignment, she said. Imburg said the “gift gurus” at Elfster also have suggestions, especially for recipients who aren’t offering any clues as to what they’d like. In a similar vein as Rogers, the Elfster team offered ideas for some practical gifts, like water bottles, blankets and massage guns. Other no-nonsense home and kitchen items, like food storage containers, charging stations and more are featured on the site’s “Top Trending Gift Ideas for 2024” list. Gift cards, although they are not particularly glamorous, are an essentially foolproof option, Rogers said, and they won’t leave your recipient wondering where they’ll find room on their shelf for another mug or book. “I don’t want to give someone something solely to check a box,” Rogers said. “I want them to enjoy it, instead of being like, ‘What do I do with this now?’” Some gift-givers find that Secret Santa (and its many counterparts like White Elephant and Yankee Swap) actually cuts down on stress and spending, as it’s often done in place of giving individual presents to each member of a group. Nicole Troiano of Cranston, Rhode Island, finds them to be a fun way to handle holidays with large groups — even if co-workers may need to ask around to get specifics on their assigned person. “It’s fun to do it that way and think about something that would be good for that person,” she said. “And then, when they open it, they’re like, ‘Oh my God!’” By the weekend after Thanksgiving, Troiano had already purchased and wrapped her gift for the exchange she’s taking part in this year. After her swap, a lucky participant will be the new owner of a cutting board, two bottles of wine wearing bottle-size ugly sweaters, and gourmet chocolates.

Encina Development Group in a filing Thursday in U.S. Middle District Court accused Rettew Associates Inc. of failing to competently manage projects for which it was retained. Encina, located in Springs, Texas, announced in April 2022 it would build a state-of-the-art facility on a 105-acre, industrially zoned, rail-served site along Route 11 adjacent to the North Branch of the Susquehanna River in Point Twp., seven miles outside Northumberland. The Point Township Circular Manufacturing Facility was expected to create 300 jobs with an average annual salary of $75,000, according to the company. The facility was planning to use proven technologies to process 450,000 tons of recycled plastic materials annually that otherwise would go to landfills or incinerators, it said. The court filing Thursday was in response to Rettew’s suit that claims Encina owes it more than $225,000 plus interest for unpaid invoices for four months in 2023. Encina claims services provided by Rettew were so inadequately performed it would be unreasonable to expect further payment. It cites letters from the state Department of Environmental Protection stating Rettew’s proposals lacked required details and that design requirements remained unsatisfied. It accuses Rettew of not properly advising Encina to anticipate the permitting challenges specific to that site. Rettew’s failure to provide services in a manner consistent with the contractual standard of care resulted in excessive billing and unnecessary and exorbitant delays, Encina contends. It cites as an example the sophisticated level of civil engineering work it did on a floodplain plan until Rettew agreed to the proposal of the Point Twp. engineer that it initially rejected. Encina also claims Rettew failed to provide: * The number and nature of the permits required for the project or the timeline and costs of obtaining them. * An accurate timeline for approvals required by the state Historic Preservation Office. * Notice a third-party environmental consultant would be needed. Encina contends it has paid Rettew more than $520,000 for work that remains incomplete or for which it did not get full value. Rettew contends it completed the work as required but Encina has breached the two agreements by not paying eight invoices submitted in 2023. The project had met opposition from the Save Our Susquehanna citizens group that voiced concerns about potential health and environmental impacts. Northumberland Borough Council went on record opposing it. Last April through a news release Encina announced it had scrapped plans for the project and would be pursuing other projects in the U.S., Saudi Arabia and Southeast Asia. The decision to relocate the project resulted in significant losses of investments that are not transferrable, Encina claims. Rettew and Encina in February 2022 entered into a professional services agreement for a range of services related to the planned recycling project. They included reviewing applications for various permits and a post-construction storm water management plan, conducting archaeological and river surveys, doing a traffic impact study and delineating wetlands. That April the parties entered into a consulting agreement that provided Rettew would pay an hourly rate for additional time needed by the engineering firm to complete work under the earlier agreement. The S&P 500 gained 0.8% Wednesday to break a two-day losing streak and finished just short of its all-time high. Big Tech stocks led the way, which drove the Nasdaq composite up 1.8% to top the 20,000 level for the first time. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged with a dip of 0.2%. Stocks got a boost as expectations built that the Fed will deliver another cut to interest rates at its meeting next week. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stock indexes are rising Wednesday after the latest update on inflation appeared to clear the way for more help for the economy from the Federal Reserve . The S&P 500 gained 0.9% and is on track to break its first two-day losing streak in nearly a month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 7 points, or less than 0.1%, as of 2:45 p.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 1.8% and was heading for a record. Treasury yields edged higher in the bond market as expectations built that Wednesday’s inflation data will allow the Fed to deliver another cut to interest rates at its meeting next week. Traders are betting on a 95% probability of that, according to data from CME Group, up from 89% a day before. If they’re correct, it would be a third straight cut by the Fed after it began lowering rates in September from a two-decade high. It’s hoping to support a slowing job market after getting inflation nearly all the way down to its 2% target. Lower rates would give a boost to the economy, but they could also provide more fuel for inflation. Wednesday’s report said U.S. consumers paid prices in November that were 2.7% higher than a year earlier. That’s a slight acceleration from October’s inflation rate of 2.6%, but it was exactly what economists were expecting. Another report on inflation at the wholesale level will arrive on Thursday. “The data have given the Fed the ‘all clear’ for next week, and today’s inflation data keep a January cut in active discussion,” according to Ellen Zentner, chief economic strategist for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. Expectations for a series of cuts to rates by the Fed have been one of the main reasons the S&P 500 has set an all-time high 57 times this year , with the latest coming last week. On Wall Street, Stitch Fix jumped 47.8% after the company that sends clothes to your door reported a smaller loss for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It also gave financial forecasts for the current quarter that were better than expected, including for revenue. Albertsons edged down by 0.6% after filing a lawsuit against Kroger, saying it didn’t do enough for their proposed $24.6 billion merger agreement to win regulatory clearance. Albertsons said it’s seeking billions of dollars in damages from Kroger, whose stock rose 0.6%. A day earlier, judges in separate cases in Oregon and Washington nixed the supermarket giants’ merger. The grocers contended a combination could have helped them compete with big retailers like Walmart, Costco and Amazon, but critics said it would hurt competition. After terminating the merger agreement Albertsons said it plans to boost its dividend 25% and increased the size of its program to buy back its own stock. Mondelez, the company behind Oreo and other food brands, climbed 2.2% after announcing a plan to send cash to shareholders by buying back up to $9 billion of its own stock. The program replaces a prior $6 billion plan, which had about $2.8 billion of capacity remaining and would have otherwise expired at the end of next year. On the losing end of Wall Street, Macy’s fell 2.3% after cutting some of its financial forecasts for the full year of 2024, including for how much profit it expects to make off each $1 of revenue. Dave & Buster’s Entertainment sank 18.7% after reporting a worse loss for the latest quarter than expected. It also said CEO Chris Morris has resigned, and the board has been working with an executive-search firm for the last few months to find its next permanent leader. In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.27% from 4.23% late Tuesday. The two-year Treasury yield, which more closely tracks expectations for the Fed, rose to 4.16% from 4.14%. In stock markets abroad, indexes rose across much of Europe and Asia. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was an outlier and slipped 0.8% as Chinese leaders convened an annual planning meeting in Beijing that is expected to set economic policies and growth targets for the coming year. South Korea’s Kospi rose 1%, up for a second straight day as it climbs back following last week’s political turmoil where its president briefly declared martial law. ___ AP Writers Matt Ott and Zimo Zhong contributed. "War on Gaza": Joe Sacco’s graphic journey through genocideATLANTA, Dec. 11, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Oxford Industries, Inc. (NYSE:OXM) today announced financial results for its third quarter of fiscal 2024 ended November 2, 2024. Consolidated net sales in the third quarter of fiscal 2024 were $308 million compared to $327 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2023. Loss per share on a GAAP basis was $0.25 compared to net earnings per share of $0.68 in the third quarter of fiscal 2023. On an adjusted basis, loss per share was $0.11 compared to net earnings per share of $1.01 in the third quarter of fiscal 2023. Tom Chubb, Chairman and CEO, commented, “Following a difficult third quarter, we are pleased with the beginning of the holiday season now that some recent headwinds have started to abate. The cumulative effects of several years of high inflation combined with distractions from the U.S. elections and other world events, led to less frequent and more tentative consumer spending behavior during the third quarter which is traditionally our smallest volume quarter of the year. Additionally, our most significant and important market, the Southeastern United States, was impacted by two major hurricanes in quick succession that resulted in estimated lost sales of $4 million and an estimated impact of $0.14 per share. When combined with a highly competitive and promotional environment, these headwinds led to financial performance that was weaker than expected.” Mr. Chubb concluded, “Encouragingly, consumers have responded favorably to our recent product introductions and marketing campaigns, driving a nice improvement in comp store trends once the holiday season got underway. However, due to the weaker than expected consumer environment before the election and the fourth quarter impact of the hurricanes, which we project will include an additional $3 million of lost revenue and $0.11 per share, we have lowered our fiscal 2024 sales and EPS guidance. We are confident that our business model will drive profitable growth and long-term shareholder value well into the future. We could not do this without our exceptional team of people, to whom we extend our sincere gratitude.” Third Quarter of Fiscal 2024 versus Fiscal 2023 Consolidated net sales of $308 million decreased compared to sales of $327 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2023. Full-price direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales decreased 8% to $200 million versus the third quarter of fiscal 2023. Full-price retail sales of $99 million were 6% lower than prior-year period. E-commerce sales of $101 million were 11% lower than prior-year period. Outlet sales of $17 million were 3% higher than prior-year period. Food and beverage sales were $24 million, a 4% increase versus prior-year period. Wholesale sales of $67 million were 2% lower than the third quarter of fiscal 2023. Gross margin was 63.1% on a GAAP basis, compared to 62.9% in the third quarter of fiscal 2023. The increase in gross margin was primarily due to a $4 million lower LIFO accounting charge and lower discounts at Lilly Pulitzer. This was partially offset due to full-price retail and e-commerce sales representing a lower proportion of net sales at Tommy Bahama, Lilly Pulitzer and Johnny Was with more sales occurring during promotional and clearance events. Adjusted gross margin, which excludes the effect of LIFO accounting, decreased to 63.0% compared to 64.0% on an adjusted basis in the prior-year period. SG&A was $205 million compared to $195 million last year. On an adjusted basis, SG&A was $201 million compared to $191 million in the prior-year period. The increase in SG&A was primarily driven by: Expenses related to 33 new store openings since the third quarter of fiscal 2023, including four Tommy Bahama Marlin Bars. Pre-opening expenses related to approximately five additional stores planned to open in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024, including two additional Tommy Bahama Marlin Bars that are expected to open in the next few months. The addition of Jack Rogers. Royalties and other operating income of $4 million were comparable to the third quarter of fiscal 2023. Operating loss was $6 million, or (2.0%) of net sales, compared to operating income of $14 million, or 4.4% of net sales, in the third quarter of fiscal 2023. On an adjusted basis, operating income decreased to an operating loss of $3 million, or (1.1%) of net sales, compared to operating income of $21 million, or 6.6% of net sales, in the third quarter of fiscal 2023. The decreased operating income includes the impact of decreased net sales and increased SG&A as the Company continues to invest in the business. Interest expense decreased from $1 million in the prior year period. The decreased interest expense was primarily due to a lower average outstanding debt balance during the third quarter of fiscal 2024 than the third quarter of fiscal 2023. Due to lower earnings during the third quarter as compared to our other fiscal quarters, certain discrete or other items have a more pronounced impact on the effective tax rate. Our effective income tax rate of 42.5% for the third quarter of fiscal 2024 included the impact of discrete, favorable US federal return-to-provision adjustments primarily related to an increase in the research and development tax credit and certain adjustments to the US taxation on foreign earnings. For the third quarter of fiscal 2023, our effective income tax rate of 18.6% included the favorable utilization of the research and development tax credit and adjustments to the US taxation on foreign earnings which reduced the effective tax rate. Balance Sheet and Liquidity Inventory decreased $3 million, or 2%, on a LIFO basis and increased $2 million, or 1%, on a FIFO basis compared to the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2023. Inventory balances were comparable in all operating groups. During the first nine months of fiscal 2024, cash flow from operations was $104 million compared to $169 million in the first nine months of fiscal 2023. The cash flow from operations in the first nine months of fiscal 2024, along with borrowings of $29 million, provided sufficient cash to fund $92 million of capital expenditures and $33 million of dividends. During the third quarter of fiscal 2024, long-term debt decreased to $58 million compared to $66 million of borrowings outstanding at the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2023 as cash flow from operations exceeded increased capital expenditures primarily associated with the project to build a new distribution center in Lyons, Georgia, payments of dividends and working capital requirements. The Company had $7 million of cash and cash equivalents versus $8 million of cash and cash equivalents at the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2023. Dividend The Board of Directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.67 per share. The dividend is payable on January 31, 2025 to shareholders of record as of the close of business on January 17, 2025. The Company has paid dividends every quarter since it became publicly owned in 1960. Outlook For fiscal 2024 ending on February 1, 2025, the Company revised its sales and EPS guidance. The Company now expects net sales in a range of $1.50 billion to $1.52 billion as compared to net sales of $1.57 billion in fiscal 2023. In fiscal 2024, GAAP EPS is expected to be between $5.78 and $5.98 compared to fiscal 2023 GAAP EPS of $3.82. Adjusted EPS is expected to be between $6.50 and $6.70, compared to fiscal 2023 adjusted EPS of $10.15. For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024, the Company expects net sales to be between $375 million and $395 million compared to net sales of $404 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023. GAAP EPS is expected to be between $1.02 and $1.22 in the fourth quarter compared to a GAAP loss per share of $3.85 in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023 that included noncash impairment charges totaling $114 million, or $5.31 per share. Adjusted EPS is expected to be between $1.18 and $1.38 compared to adjusted EPS of $1.90 in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023. The Company anticipates interest expense of $3 million in fiscal 2024, with interest expense expected to be $1 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024. The Company’s effective tax rate is expected to be approximately 23% for the full year of fiscal 2024. Capital expenditures in fiscal 2024, including the $92 million in the first nine months of fiscal 2024, are expected to be approximately $150 million compared to $74 million in fiscal 2023. The planned year-over-year increase in capital expenditures includes approximately $75 million now budgeted in fiscal 2024 for the distribution center project in Lyons, Georgia. Additionally, we have been investing in new brick and mortar locations, relocations and remodels of existing locations resulting in a year-over-year net increase of full price stores of approximately 30 by the end of fiscal 2024, which includes approximately five planned to open in the fourth quarter of the year. We will also continue with our investments in our various technology systems initiatives, including e-commerce and omnichannel capabilities, data management and analytics, customer data and insights, cybersecurity, automation, including artificial intelligence, and infrastructure. Conference Call The Company will hold a conference call with senior management to discuss its financial results at 4:30 p.m. ET today. Every time you create a new user account in Windows, it will set a default user account picture. We will show how you can change the default user account picture in Windows. You can use any picture of your choice. On top of this, you can even standardize the default user account icon by preventing users from changing it. Windows users can update their default account picture through the Settings app, the user accounts picture folder, or the online Microsoft dashboard. To access your profile photos, open Settings -> Accounts -> Account settings -> Your info . Go to Adjust your photo section. Here, you can change the default user account picture to any other picture of your choice by clicking Open Camera to take a photo, or through Browse files . The new image will be displayed immediately on the accounts page. In the past, you could also change the user account picture from Control Panel. This option has been disabled now. Windows stores the default user account icon in the PNG format within a system folder in a variety of sizes. By replacing these default pictures with the icon of our choice, we can change the default account picture. Launch File Explorer and go to the %ProgramData%\Microsoft\User Account Pictures folder. Here you will see all the default user account icons. We need to replace the user icon image files with another profile pic of the same dimensions. First, download the picture or icon of your choice that is at least 512px x 512px. Make sure that the width and height are the same. Now, create five copies of the icon and resize and rename them. You can use MS Paint for quick resizing into any of these dimensions. In the next step, simply copy and paste the default icon pictures for above dimensions into the User Account Pictures folder. You’ll need to tap Replace the file in the destination to enable the new choices. This will overwrite the older files, so creating a backup is essential. The backup files can be saved in any folder from which they can be easily retrieved. Alternatively, you can use the .BKP extension for backups. Rename “user.png,” “user-192.png,” “user-48.png,” “user-40.png,” and “user-32.png” to “user.png.bkp,” “user-192.png.bkp,” “user-48.png.bkp,” “user-40.png.bkp,” and “user-32.png.bkp” respectively. You can ignore the “user.bmp” file. Note: If you don’t want to go through the renaming process, you can simply delete or replace them. But if you do that, you might not be able to restore the default icons when needed. You can simply copy the icons from another system though. By default, a Microsoft account profile picture will sync to your Windows device. This functionality is also available for users with access to Microsoft 365 , as well as for those who keep their OneDrive or SharePoint synced to their computer. Log in to your Microsoft account online . Once the dashboard appears, navigate to Your info . From there, you can select Change Photo to update your Microsoft user account picture. A new pop-up window will open where you can browse your PC to add a new picture to your profile. Click Save to confirm. After that, Update your Profile to save these changes to your Microsoft account. Related : fix the user profile service failed the sign-in error in Windows. You can delete a Windows user account picture from the AppData folder or the Microsoft account dashboard. Open File Explorer and type %AppData% in the address bar, then navigate to the Microsoft folder. Alternatively, you can access it from This PC by following the administrator user path to the Roaming folder. Once here, navigate to the Windows -> Account Pictures folder, where you can delete any pictures you no longer need. If this folder is empty, as it is on my PC currently, it indicates that the images are synced through Microsoft cloud. This brings us to the next method for deleting pictures. Also read : did you know you can remove apps from the Open with list from your right-click on Windows files? Return to your Microsoft account online dashboard. Click on Your info , then select Change Photo . Your current profile photo will be displayed on your Windows device. Click Remove Photo , and you will be prompted with Are you sure you want to remove the picture ? Click Yes to confirm. To restore the Microsoft default account picture, make the necessary changes in the Settings app and in the default User Account Pictures folder. Firstly, go to Settings -> Accounts -> Account settings -> Your info . Now, upload the old default image using Browse files . To do this, navigate to the %ProgramData% folder, then go to the User Account Pictures folder. Here, you can select any guest or user image in PNG format (ignore the BMP.) These would be the default wireframe account pictures for your device. Restoring or reinstating your user account picture to its default will also update it in your Microsoft account. This can be beneficial for those who prefer not to display their photos online. Also read : learn the difference between a local account and a Microsoft account . If you don’t want users to change your user account picture (which is one among many pranks someone can play on Windows PC users,) you can block that option itself. There are two ways to do it, through Local Group Policy Editor, and Registry Editor. Open the Start menu, search for “gpedit.msc,” right-click on it and select the option Run as administrator . In the group policy editor, go to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Control Panel -> User Accounts . In the right panel, double-click on the Apply the default account picture to all users policy to open a new policy properties window. Next, you need to select Enabled in the policy properties window, and click on the OK button to save the changes. Restart the system. All users will no longer be able to change the default account picture. Instead, you will get an Account picture error while trying to change the UAC picture from settings. If you want to revert back, select either the Disabled or Not configured option in the policy properties window. If you don’t have access to the Group Policy Editor, you can do the same thing via Registry Editor. Search for “regedit” in the Start menu, right-click on it and select the option Run as administrator . In the Registry Editor, go to the following location: In the right panel, right-click and select “New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value.” Name the new value as UseDefaultTile . Double-click on the value, set the Value Data as “1” and click on the OK button. If you want to revert back, either change the value data to “0” or delete the UseDefaultTile value itself. Make sure you take a backup of the Windows registry both before and after any of these changes. In this guide, we’ve explored all the default methods to change the User Account Control (UAC) picture in Windows. If you face any challenges while modifying your administrator permissions, you might consider using a super administrator account , which offers additional privileges. Image Credit: Pixabay . DETROIT – An important warning for online shoppers is to beware of bogus sales in their social media news feeds. You might see too-good-to-be-true prices on everything from tumblers to sneakers to beauty products and countless other hot holiday items. Don’t fall for it! Consumer Reports reveals how to spot the fakes so your real money isn’t wasted. Was the Grinch behind that ad for trendy holiday gifts that turned out too good to be true? In Bill Sipp’s case, it was an ad for lawn mower equipment. He needed two hard-to-find belt parts for his old Snapper mowers. He found a place that said they did have them in stock. However, after waiting a few days, his order was still pending. He tried calling them, but the phone number was no good. He then called his credit card company and was able to reverse the overseas charge. Bill is embarrassed once he realizes what he has done. But he’s not the only one with click remorse. According to a recent study by the Better Business Bureau, bogus online sales contributed to a 125 percent uptick in fraud reports. Scammers are ready to pounce on unsuspecting holiday scrollers. So, if an item is sold out everywhere else and you find it on a random website you’ve never heard of, there’s a good chance it could be fraudulent. Online shoppers might not even realize they’re buying from a third-party vendor and not directly from a reputable shopping website. This not only opens the door to fraudulent transactions but also faulty products. Unsafe products like pajamas that violate federal flammability standards and carbon monoxide detectors that don’t work have been sold by third-party sellers. The laws haven’t kept up with the emergence of online marketplaces, and, as a result, they aren’t providing legal and financial incentives for companies to keep consumers safe. That needs to change. Before you click ‘buy’, do your homework. If it’s a business you’ve never heard of, search for it on Better Business Bureau or elsewhere. If it’s a retailer you’re unfamiliar with, type in the name of the retailer with the word scam or review to see what other people are saying. Shop online with a credit card. Most offer fraud protection. If your order never arrives on your doorstep, dispute the charge. More: Consumer ReportsZURICH — Saudi Arabia was officially confirmed Wednesday by FIFA as host of the 2034 World Cup in men's soccer, giving the oil-rich kingdom its biggest prize yet for massive spending on global sports driven by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. People are also reading... Be the first to know Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Britain has a housing crisis. That much, everybody knows. We hear it time and time again: we don’t have enough homes. We must build and build and build. More and more parts of the country must be concreted over. In many parts of the UK this is true : supply has not kept up with demand. But – and this may surprise you – this country actually has more homes than it has households. In fact, according the 2021 census, there were 1.4 million more dwellings in England than there were households – in other words, there are more than enough properties to go round. This is true in every region. Even in London, where demand is highest, there were 250,000 more homes than households. What is going on? First, the housing crisis is one of affordability, not just availability. Just because there are lots of properties in a particular area, that does not mean they are priced within the reach of people on average (or even above average) incomes. Second, many people own more than one home: buy-to-let landlords, for example, may have dozens on their books. There is another problem that does not get the attention it needs: too many family-sized homes are being lived in by older people who, bluntly, do not need them. It is now quite normal to find younger people crammed into homes too small for their needs (in London, for example, one in six rented homes is now officially classed as overcrowded) while, at the same time and on the very same streets, others are living in large houses with many empty rooms. It is a woeful way of making the best use of the limited housing stock we have, yet politicians are too scared to talk about it. And so the situation goes on: the bedrooms that could be used to house the families desperately in need of them are instead being left empty: doors closed, heating off, moths their only inhabitants. This problem of what the experts call “under-occupancy” is particularly pronounced in homes owned by the elderly. Eighty per cent of over-65s own their own homes and, in general, they are not short on space. The average size of a property owned by someone in this age group is a spacious 110 square metres , according to experts at the London School of Economics. Yet half of them live alone. No surprise, then, that two thirds of over-65s say they have at least two spare bedrooms. As a result, 86 per cent of homes occupied by people of that age are classed as “under-occupied” – much higher than for other age groups. The fact that family-sized homes are being monopolised by older generations is one reason why we have a shortage of them. As a result, parents with children are too often having to settle for less room than they require. And this, of course, has a huge impact on their ability to have more children: a lack of space, and the unaffordability of housing, is one reason why the UK’s birth rate has plummeted to concerning levels. The market is not solving the problem, either: despite a shortage of three- and four-bedroom houses, developers make more profit cramming one and two-bedroom flats into their developments, meaning the supply of family-sized homes is failing match the demand. None of this, it should go without saying, is the fault of pensioners. They may have benefited from a housing market that is broken, but it wasn’t them that broke it. However, that does not hide the hard truth that Britain isn’t just failing to build enough new homes where they are needed – we are also not making effective use of the ones we already have. So what to do? It is a sensitive question, because nobody wants older people to feel forced to move out. And yet, if the system worked better, everybody would benefit from pensioners downsizing more often than they currently are. This is not about charity: we cannot expect over-65s to vacate the homes they have lived in, on average, for 25 years just because it might benefit somebody else. Instead, the Government needs to find ways to make sure that downsizing is works for them too. A carrot-and-stick approach is needed. First, councils need to do a better job of making sure that there are attractive homes available for older people to move into. Retirement communities, which are much more common in other parts of Europe, should be a bigger part of local plans. This could also help with the loneliness epidemic afflicting Britain’s pensioners. One in five over-65s say they frequently feel lonely – a situation not helped by so many living alone in large, mostly empty homes. Read Next Welcome to Hastings, the hidden homelessness capital of the UK Older people should also be given financial incentives to help them downsize. While some experts have called for a stamp-duty exemption for people downsizing, that would be fundamentally unfair. Why should wealthier homeowners cashing in on the house price boom have to pay less tax than first-time buyers who have sacrificed so much to scrabble together a deposit? A better option would be to give older people the option of delaying stamp duty payments so that the sum comes out of their estate when they die, rather than having to be paid when they move home. Once the incentives and help to downsize are in place, the Government should ask those not making good use of their homes to contribute more in council tax. If that seems controversial, it shouldn’t be: homes that are left empty for more than a year are already charged council tax at a premium rate – sometimes as much as four times the normal levy. There is no reason why a similar rule could not be applied to homes that are mostly empty. To avoid having to pay the tax, those living in heavily under-occupied homes could rent out rooms to people looking for somewhere to live. Older people who – very understandably – might not want to start sharing their home with strangers could be helped to look into downsizing. At the very least, the single-person discount on council tax should be abolished for those in under-occupied properties. This is not about punishing people in big homes or trying to force them to move. Nor is it about asking pensioners to make sacrifices for the benefit of young people. This is simply a case of using the tax system to encourage older people to take decisions that would benefit them too. By moving to a smaller property almost certain to cost less than the one they are selling, they will free up some of their wealth to enable them to make the most of their later years, rather than having to skimp or suffer because all their money is tied up in bricks and mortar. This, in turn, has further benefits for the welfare state, which currently spends eye-watering amounts supporting wealthy but cash-poor pensioners, via policies like the triple lock . Ultimately, wealth is wealth . The state should not have to continue subsidising those with wealth far above the average amount just so they can continue to avoid needing to bank their profits. This is a difficult and sensitive issue, which is why it has largely been ignored. But it is in everybody’s interests for Britain to begin a new conversation about downsizing. Yes, we need to build new homes far quicker than we currently are, but our housing crisis cannot be solved just by concreting over more and more of the country. We also need to look at who owns the homes we already have, and whether they are making good use of them. Too often, the answer is no. And, as politically sensitive as it may be, that needs to start to change. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Biden administration plans on reducing part of Intel's $8.5 billion in federal funding for computer chip plants around the country, according to three people familiar with the grant who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations. The reduction is largely a byproduct of the $3 billion that Intel is also receiving to provide computer chips to the military. President Joe Biden announced the agreement to provide Intel with up to $8.5 billion in direct funding and $11 billion in loans in March. The changes to Intel’s funding are not related to the company’s financial record or milestones, the people familiar with the grant told The Associated Press. In August, the chipmaker announced that it would cut 15% of its workforce — about 15,000 jobs — in an attempt to turn its business around to compete with more successful rivals like Nvidia and AMD. Unlike some of its rivals, Intel manufactures chips in addition to designing them. Two years ago, President Biden hailed Intel as a job creator with its plans to open a new plant near Columbus, Ohio. The president praised the company for plans to “build a workforce of the future” for the $20 billion project, which he said would generate 7,000 construction jobs and 3,000 full-time jobs set to pay an average of $135,000 a year. The California-based tech giant's funding is tied to a sweeping 2022 law that President Biden has celebrated and which is designed to revive U.S. semiconductor manufacturing. Known as the CHIPS and Science Act , the $280 billion package is aimed at sharpening the U.S. edge in military technology and manufacturing while minimizing the kinds of supply disruptions that occurred in 2021, after the start of the coronavirus pandemic, when a shortage of chips stalled factory assembly lines and fueled inflation . The Biden administration helped shepherd the legislation following pandemic-era concerns that the loss of access to chips made in Asia could plunge the U.S. economy into recession. When pushing for the investment, lawmakers expressed concern about efforts by China to control Taiwan, which accounts for more than 90% of advanced computer chip production. In August, the administration pledged to provide up to $6.6 billion so that a Taiwanese semiconductor giant could expand the facilities it is already building in Arizona and better ensure that the most advanced microchips are produced domestically for the first time. The Commerce Department said the funding for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. meant the company could expand on its existing plans for two facilities in Phoenix and add a third, newly announced production hub. The administration has promised tens of billions of dollars to support construction of U.S. chip foundries and reduce reliance on Asian suppliers, which Washington sees as a security weakness. Newegg also has deals on processors, storage, motherboards, and more, so you can put together a solid 1440p gaming PC for just under $1,800 with all of the deals I've rounded up here. Of course, customization is key for many, so if you're hoping to get a more unified build, you'll have to adjust some options or switch out a few parts for others, but given how much Newegg has on sale right now, there's no reason why you couldn't find the parts you need to fit with your build at the lowest price possible—at least while the sale lasts. Today's best PC component deals The AMD Ryzen 9 7900X is one of the best processors going, though it's also one of the most expensive. Fortunately, you can get fantastic gaming, creative, and productivity performance for 34% off right now at Newegg. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 is one of the best 1440p graphics cards you can buy, and with the release of the RTX 4070 Super, its even come down in price quite a bit. This Newegg deal takes that price cut even deeper to one of the lowest prices I've seen for this GPU. The Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX AM5 might not be the most high-end motherboard out there, but it's more than enough for most people, and it'll let you take full advantage of both DDR5 memory and new PCIe 5.0 SSDs. This one is only for AMD AM5 processors though, so if you're looking for an Intel board, Newegg has plenty of those on sale too. The Samsung 990 Pro is one of the best SSDs you can buy, pushing the limits of what the PCIe 4.0 interface can handle while maximizing compatibility for most users. Normally priced at a premium, you can save big on this drive with Newegg's After Christmas sale. The Corsair Vengence DDR5 RAM kits might not have as much premium reputation as Corsair's Dominator series, but this RAM is incredibly fast and much cheaper while still giving your build some RGB flair. Already one of the more affordable 360mm AIO coolers you can buy, the Enermax LIQMAXFLO 360 ARGB is marked down even further at Newegg right now, giving you one of the cheapest ways to cool up to 400W TDP off your PCs CPU. In addition to a CPU cooler, the hot air inside your case is going to need to be vented out to ensure the best performance. This three-pack of Corsair 120mm fans with iCue RGB control is a great way to do that for a price that can't be beat. 80+ Platinum PSUs don't come cheap, especially at higher wattages, but this ATX 3.0 850W PSU from be quiet! features modular connections and 600W PCIe 5.0 16-pin support for the latest Nvidia GPUs. At the end of the day, if you're spending this much money on PC components, you're going to want to show everything off. This NZXT H9 Flow case features a dual-chamber design for better cable management and two tempered glass sides to show off the interior.

Suspended soccer coach Bev Priestman has broken her silence, saying she hopes something positive comes out of the ongoing Canadian drone-spying scandal. “I hope out of a really tough situation, this is a turning point for our game,” she wrote in an Instagram post via her verified account. “There has been a standard and precedent set now, irrespective of gender, tournament or associated revenues that will hopefully clean up our game.” She did not address her role in the affair in the six-paragraph post. Priestman, assistant coach Jasmine Mander and analyst Joey Lombardi are all serving one-year FIFA bans for their role in the scandal, which saw the Canada women’s team use a drone to spy on two New Zealand training sessions at the Olympics. Canada Soccer says the three won’t be back in the wake of the recent independent report into the scandal. Lombardi is already gone, having resigned his position after the Olympics. “The findings of the independent investigator reveal that the incident itself was a symptom of a difficult and unacceptable past culture within the national teams,” Canada Soccer chief executive officer and general secretary Kevin Blue and president and board chair Peter Augruso said in a statement when the report was released earlier this month. Canada Soccer continues to investigate the roots of the spying scandal and has initiated a disciplinary process against former men’s and women’s coach John Herdman, currently coach of Toronto FC. The governing body has said it “has initiated a proceeding with respect to Mr. Herdman under its Disciplinary Code.” Herdman did not speak to Sonia Regenbogen, who wrote the report. Priestman signed a new contract in January that runs through the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The 38-year-old Priestman took over the Canadian women on Nov. 1, 2020, and was initially appointed “through the next quadrennial.” She had been working on a rolling contract — until the new deal. “It has and will continue to take some time to process, heal, find the right words and step back into a public setting but I felt I should say something irrespective of ongoing circumstances,” Priestman wrote. In addition to the suspensions, FIFA docked the Canadian women six points in the group stage at the Olympics and fined Canada Soccer 200,000 Swiss francs ($312,815). Despite that, defending champion Canada still managed to make the knockout round before losing a penalty shootout to Germany in the quarterfinals. “I know that amazing group was ready to reach the top again this summer, but in many ways what they did was even more special under such difficult circumstances,” Priestman wrote. She also thanked those who had reached out to her. “You continue to help me through some dark days,” she said. Canadian under-20 coach Cindy Tye has been named interim coach for the sixth-ranked Canadians’ upcoming friendlies in Spain against Iceland and South Korea.

Dick's Sporting Goods shares rise on analyst optimism ahead of resultsCustomer service chatbots can be annoying – but new advancements in technology means they are unlikely to go anywhere, according to Jess Kelly. Over the years, customers have made it increasingly clear that they do not appreciate their complaint being referred to a chatbot. Many shoppers find these bots to have incredibly limited capabilities, often leading to frustration if no alternative communication is available. Newstalk’s Tech Correspondent Jess Kelly told Moncrieff that large language models similar to ChatGPT are being used to improve this technology. “Rather than having three or four pre-programmed responses and then that’s the extent of it, they are now using the technology of the likes of ChatGPT to converse in a humanistic way ,” she said. “So, for example, if you write your very thoughtful, very specific question into that box, it’ll then understand the context. “It’ll be able to direct you based on not only the company's manual, but [also by] taking bits of information from your question.” Ms Kelly said that as advancements continue to be made, it will soon become impossible to tell if you are talking to a human or an AI assistant. “The application - and the addition of the large language model technology - will transform customer service ,” she said. “Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, I don’t know – but you will struggle to identify when you are talking to a chatbot versus a human. “Personally speaking, as a millennial who struggles to talk to people, this is my dream.” According to Ms Kelly, this technology could become incredibly useful for planning holidays and other experiences. “The big thing that it will be useful for, I think, if when you’re booking a holiday in the future,” she said. “Rather than clicking through 17 different tabs and menus and all the rest, you’ll be able to just word vomit the type of experience you want – who's going on the trip, your interests, the restaurants that you want to eat in, all the rest – and by having a conversation, your trip will be booked.” Ms Kelly said that instances of chatbots breaking and giving out nonsensical answers are becoming less and less common. The observation came amidst the ongoing debate about Indian immigration and talent retention. Published: December 28, 2024 11:46 PM IST By Edited by Sridhar Vembu, an Indian billionaire business magnate and the founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Zoho Corporation, has called on Indians to prioritize developing technological capabilities within India rather than seeking validation through achievements abroad. Sridhar Vembu’s observation came amidst the ongoing debate about Indian immigration and talent retention. He posted on X: “To earn true respect in the world, Indians have to develop deep capabilities in India. Achievements abroad won’t do it. I hope smart Indians keep this in mind.” To earn true respect in the world, Indians have to develop deep capabilities in India. Achievements abroad won’t do it. I hope smart Indians keep this in mind. — Sridhar Vembu (@svembu) “As an Indian, I work hard to retain talent in India because we so badly need the talent to develop India’s technology capability,” said Vembu as he praised America’s immigrant-friendly policies while questioning the sustainability of relying heavily on imported talent. Referring to the multifaceted undercurrents of the migration of talent internationally, he noted that while opposition to immigration can sometimes emanate from racism and xenophobia, it makes sense to discuss the feasibility of the dependence and reliance on human resource hired from abroad. To underscore his point, Vembu pointed out that American companies have historically preferred importing talent over developing it domestically. Articulating on a study about Indian immigration to the United States, Vembu acknowledged America’s success in attracting and integrating global talent while expressing his commitment to retaining skilled professionals in India while he emphasised the critical need for talent to advance India’s technological capabilities. The dialogue veered, touching on broader themes of national development and talent retention. Vembu posed a thoughtful question about prioritizing GDP rankings and technological leadership through imported talent. “Is it worth the bragging rights to be the number 1 in GDP or number 1 in AI or whatever, achieved with imported talent, but at the price of leaving your own people behind?” he asked. Sridhar Vembu is the 39th richest person in India with a net worth of $5.85 billion, as of 2024, according to Forbes. He was awarded India’s fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 2021. Sridhar Vembu & siblings are ranked 51st with a net worth of $5.8 billion on the list of India’s 100 richest tycoons, dated October 9, 2024, as per Forbes. Including, it seemed for much of the first half at the London Stadium, the entire West Ham defence. There were times during those 49 wild minutes when Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard seemed to be playing pretty much in the same pocket of air, like a pair of hummingbirds, beautifully conjoined. Footballers who work together like this are often said to have an understanding or a relationship. This was the real thing. You complete me. No, seriously. Just look at the numbers. This was Ødegaard’s third start in eight days since slipping back into the team just before the international break. There had been so much talk about what his return might mean, with all due caution about overloading one player with superhero problem‐solving powers. But the team really has bloomed under his hand, or in Saka’s case rebloomed, bloomed a little more. By the break here Arsenal were running at 13 goals in their last two and a half games, nine of them assisted or scored by Saka and Ødegaard, with Saka’s personal tally three goals and four assists. Ødegaard’s return hasn’t just been a boost. This has been a homecoming. It’s the end of The Railway Children out there. Daddy’s back, walking out of the steam in his tweed coat and homburg hat. And everything’s going to be different now. At least, it is against this West Ham defence. For long periods in that first half the home team simply didn’t apply any resistance to this process, reduced to the football equivalent of one of those paper‐thin wasabi seaweed crackers, all branding and plastic, a little colouring and sheen, but basically not really there. By half-time Saka and Ødegaard had taken 60 touches between them, just under a third of West Ham’s total from one to 11. Those are all touches near your goal, by the best players in the opposition team, often in space, allowed to dream and twirl and basically dance in each other’s eyeline. Around this Arsenal and West Ham dished up a genuinely crazy game of football. It took 10 minutes to open the scoring. Pablo Sanz, West Ham’s designated set-piece sidekick, had appeared next to Julen Lopetegui for Arsenal’s first corner, matching up the Arteta‐Tover double act. As the ball was sent fizzing into the back of the West Ham net Sanz just turned and walked back, shoulders hunched, and it really is a long way in this ground, the walk of set‐piece shame. The delivery from Saka was a flat, hard skimmer. Arsenal had lumped the back post with the usual knot of black shirts, kettling West Ham in their own area. There was the familiar phalanx advance as the ball came in, all blocks and closed lanes, players there just to eat up space while Gabriel, the running back in this scrimmage, goes hunting for the ball. His marker Michail Antonio was still pressing through the crowd like a flustered shopper as the ball was headed past Lukasz Fabianski. The London Stadium had been at its cavernous best at kick-off, a vast hanger of cold, white light, still weirdly angled, as though someone has just jammed this giant Lego structure down on its base and crunched it about until it sticks. At which point, enter: the madness. By half-time the scoreline read West Ham 2-5 Arsenal, as it would stay to the end, five of those goals in the space of 13 minutes. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion Arsenal’s second was the high point of the Ødegaard-Saka fever, a goal so elegant it felt almost sarcastic. Saka started and ended the key combination, cutting inside down one of those wormholes that is somehow invisible to every opponent, laying the ball back to Ødegaard, then carrying on because he knows now what happens when you do this. The pass back into Saka’s path was a thing of beauty, floated like a soap bubble through the damp Stratford air, and also through the human props posing as West Ham defenders. Saka took the ball on his thigh then laid it sideways to Leandro Trossard to score. Six minutes later it was Saka again, this time slaloming through the claret flags and winning a penalty kick that he then presented to Ødegaard, not actually down on one knee in the restaurant but almost. Ødegaard duly buried it. That made it a 34-minute hat‐trick of goal involvements for Saka, which presumably means he gets to take home the pump that blew up the match ball. Arsenal’s fourth two minutes later was more fine play but also a little sickly because it involved West Ham just standing and watching Trossard’s perfect pass over the top for Kai Havertz. Even training cones have some kind of presence. This was frankly a disgrace to the cone. West Ham pulled a couple of goals back. Saka put away a penalty right on half-time after Fabianski decided to deal with another inswinging corner by punching Gabriel in the head. Go for the high ball, but it’s not a free hit. This isn’t purge night. And that was pretty much that, prelude to a languid postcoital cheroot of a second half. Ground may have been lost in the meantime. But this felt like the full resumption of a beautiful friendship."Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. In the competitive world of football, clubs are constantly striving to secure the best talent and maintain their position at the top. Recently, Liverpool Football Club made a significant move to solidify their standing as a powerhouse in the sport by offering a new contract to their star player, Mohamed Salah. This decision not only showcases Liverpool's commitment to excellence but also underscores the importance of retaining key players in their pursuit of success.

Recently, a shocking incident occurred where a mother and daughter were found boarding a train carrying knives, causing concern and speculation among the public. In response to this alarming situation, the authorities have taken action to address the issue, with both 12306 and the police stepping in to investigate and handle the matter.Gregg Wallace has taken a swipe at the BBC after being accused of making sex jokes and sexualised behaviour during filming. The TV chef allegedly made sexual remarks to 13 colleagues including Beeb presenter Kirsty Wark. Gregg, 60, has stepped back from the show while an investigation is carried out into allegations of misconduct. Gregg briefly spoke out to thank people for “showing their support” after the allegations came to light. Today he shared an image of a gingerbread man dunked into whipped cream, and has liked comments from fans supporting him. One comment he liked read: "Imagine trying to destroy a good man and his career because of spite and greed?" Read more Gregg Wallace supported by BBC MasterChef co-star after stepping down from show Another comment he showed his approval for said: "Always supportive you Greeg, these liberal women are offended at the slightestprobably cheeky remarks. They need to get a life." One more 'liked' by Gregg said: "A normal bloke saying normal things and the Woke brigade ready to jump on anything that could be misconstrued. Worse still, hounded by the BBC who protected Huw Edwards, Jimmy Savile and the like." Gregg continues to reject any claims of unseemly sexual comments reportedly made by him.A statement from the show's production company Banijay UK to the PA news agency read: "This week the BBC received complaints from individuals in relation to historical allegations of misconduct while working with presenter Gregg Wallace on one of our shows. Whilst these complainants have not raised the allegations directly with our show producers or parent company Banijay UK, we feel that it is appropriate to conduct an immediate, external review to fully and impartially investigate. "While this review is underway, Gregg Wallace will be stepping away from his role on MasterChef and is committed to fully cooperating throughout the process. Banijay UK's duty of care to staff is always a priority and our expectations regarding behaviour are made clear to both cast and crew on all productions, with multiple ways of raising concerns, including anonymously, clearly promoted on set." It continued: "Whilst these are historical allegations, incidences brought to our attention where these expectations are not met, are thoroughly investigated and addressed appropriately. "The BBC has said it takes any issues that are raised with it "seriously" after it was announced Wallace will step away from his role on MasterChef while complaints made to the corporation from individuals about historical allegations of misconduct are investigated." A spokesperson for the BBC stated: "We take any issues that are raised with us seriously and we have robust processes in place to deal with them. We are always clear that any behaviour which falls below the standards expected by the BBC will not be tolerated. Where an individual is contracted directly by an external production company we share any complaints or concerns with that company and we will always support them when addressing them."

Max Verstappen has been stripped of pole position for the Qatar Grand Prix . The Dutchman had topped the timesheets but was under investigation, accused of getting in the way of George Russell . And the stewards have now ruled that he was "driving unnecessarily slowly" in front of the Mercedes man. As a result, Verstappen has been handed a one-place grid penalty. It means Russell inherits pole and will now start ahead of the Red Bull racer. Verstappen has also had one penalty point added to his racing licence. Explaining their decision, the stewards wrote: "Car 1 [Verstappen was on a different preparation strategy to that of Car 63 [Russell]. Car 1 was well outside of the delta and the driver of Car 1 explained he had let Cars 4 [Lando Norris] and 14 [Fernando Alonso] past. "The driver of Car 63 claimed that he had adhered to the delta and did not expect Car 1 to be on the racing line. He stated that if a car was going slow in a high speed corner, it should not be on the racing line. "The stewards regard this case as a complicated one in that clearly Car 1 did not comply with the Race Director’s Event Notes and clearly was driving, in our determination, unnecessarily slowly considering the circumstances. "It was obvious the driver of Car 1 was attempting to cool his tyres. He also could see Car 63 approaching as he looked in his mirror multiple times whilst on the small straight between Turns 11 and 12. "Unusually, this incident occurred when neither car was on a push lap. Had Car 63 been on a push lap, the penalty would have most likely been the usual three-grid position penalty, however in mitigation of penalty, it was obvious that the driver of Car 63 had clear visibility of Car 1 and that neither car was on a push lap." Before the penalty, Verstappen had been left delighted by the pace he found in his Red Bull during qualifying. Earlier in the day, he had struggled to make much progress after losing several places on the opening lap of the sprint. But after securing what he thought would be pole position the Dutchman said: "It's a crazy turnaround. I didn't expect that. Well done to the team for giving me a car that is more connected. We changed some bits on the car, but I never thought it would make such a swing in performance. That is encouraging and I hope it continues into the race." By Vanessa G. Sánchez, KFF Health News (TNS) LOS ANGELES — President-elect Donald Trump’s promise of mass deportations and tougher immigration restrictions is deepening mistrust of the health care system among California’s immigrants and clouding the future for providers serving the state’s most impoverished residents. At the same time, immigrants living illegally in Southern California told KFF Health News they thought the economy would improve and their incomes might increase under Trump, and for some that outweighed concerns about health care. Community health workers say fear of deportation is already affecting participation in Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program for low-income residents, which was expanded in phases to all immigrants regardless of residency status over the past several years. That could undercut the state’s progress in reducing the uninsured rate, which reached a record low of 6.4% last year. Immigrants lacking legal residency have long worried that participation in government programs could make them targets, and Trump’s election has compounded those concerns, community advocates say. The incoming Trump administration is also expected to target Medicaid with funding cuts and enrollment restrictions , which activists worry could threaten the Medi-Cal expansion and kneecap efforts to extend health insurance subsidies under Covered California to all immigrants. “The fear alone has so many consequences to the health of our communities,” said Mar Velez , director of policy with the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California. “This is, as they say, not their first rodeo. They understand how the system works. I think this machine is going to be, unfortunately, a lot more harmful to our communities.” Alongside such worries, though, is a strain of optimism that Trump might be a boon to the economy, according to interviews with immigrants in Los Angeles whom health care workers were soliciting to sign up for Medi-Cal. Since Election Day, community health worker Yanet Martinez said, people are more reluctant to hear her pitch for subsidized health insurance or cancer prevention screenings. “They think I’m going to share their information to deport them,” Martinez said. (Vanessa G. Sánchez/KFF Health News/TNS) Clinics and community health workers encourage immigrants to enroll for health coverage through Medi-Cal and Covered California. But workers have noticed that fear of deportation has chilled participation. (Vanessa G. Sánchez/KFF Health News/TNS) Since Election Day, community health worker Yanet Martinez said, people are more reluctant to hear her pitch for subsidized health insurance or cancer prevention screenings. “They think I’m going to share their information to deport them,” Martinez said. (Vanessa G. Sánchez/KFF Health News/TNS) Selvin, 39, who, like others interviewed for this article, asked to be identified by only his first name because he’s living here without legal permission, said that even though he believes Trump dislikes people like him, he thinks the new administration could help boost his hours at the food processing facility where he works packing noodles. “I do see how he could improve the economy. From that perspective, I think it’s good that he won.” He became eligible for Medi-Cal this year but decided not to enroll, worrying it could jeopardize his chances of changing his immigration status. “I’ve thought about it,” Selvin said, but “I feel like it could end up hurting me. I won’t deny that, obviously, I’d like to benefit — get my teeth fixed, a physical checkup.” But fear holds him back, he said, and he hasn’t seen a doctor in nine years. It’s not Trump’s mass deportation plan in particular that’s scaring him off, though. “If I’m not committing any crimes or getting a DUI, I think I won’t get deported,” Selvin said. Petrona, 55, came from El Salvador seeking asylum and enrolled in Medi-Cal last year. She said that if her health insurance benefits were cut, she wouldn’t be able to afford her visits to the dentist. A street food vendor, she hears often about Trump’s deportation plan, but she said it will be the criminals the new president pushes out. “I’ve heard people say he’s going to get rid of everyone who’s stealing.” Although she’s afraid she could be deported, she’s also hopeful about Trump. “He says he’s going to give a lot of work to Hispanics because Latinos are the ones who work the hardest,” she said. “That’s good, more work for us, the ones who came here to work.” Newly elected Republican Assembly member Jeff Gonzalez, who flipped a seat long held by Democrats in the Latino-heavy desert region in the southeastern part of the state, said his constituents were anxious to see a new economic direction. “They’re just really kind of fed up with the status quo in California,” Gonzalez said. “People on the ground are saying, ‘I’m hopeful,’ because now we have a different perspective. We have a businessperson who is looking at the very things that we are looking at, which is the price of eggs, the price of gas, the safety.” Related Articles National Politics | California population rebounds to near pre-pandemic level National Politics | Trump wants mass deportations. Unlike most in his party, Gonzalez said he supports the extension of health care services to all residents regardless of immigration status . Health care providers said they are facing a twin challenge of hesitancy among those they are supposed to serve and the threat of major cuts to Medicaid, the federal program that provides over 60% of the funding for Medi-Cal. Health providers and policy researchers say a loss in federal contributions could lead the state to roll back or downsize some programs, including the expansion to cover those without legal authorization. California and Oregon are the only states that offer comprehensive health insurance to all income-eligible immigrants regardless of status. About 1.5 million people without authorization have enrolled in California, at a cost of over $6 billion a year to state taxpayers. “Everyone wants to put these types of services on the chopping block, which is really unfair,” said state Sen. Lena Gonzalez, a Democrat and chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus. “We will do everything we can to ensure that we prioritize this.” Sen. Gonzalez said it will be challenging to expand programs such as Covered California, the state’s health insurance marketplace, for which immigrants lacking permanent legal status are not eligible. A big concern for immigrants and their advocates is that Trump could reinstate changes to the public charge policy, which can deny green cards or visas based on the use of government benefits. “President Trump’s mass deportation plan will end the financial drain posed by illegal immigrants on our healthcare system, and ensure that our country can care for American citizens who rely on Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security,” Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to KFF Health News. During his first term, in 2019, Trump broadened the policy to include the use of Medicaid, as well as housing and nutrition subsidies. The Biden administration rescinded the change in 2021. KFF, a health information nonprofit that includes KFF Health News, found immigrants use less health care than people born in the United States. And about 1 in 4 likely undocumented immigrant adults said they have avoided applying for assistance with health care, food, and housing because of immigration-related fears, according to a 2023 survey . Another uncertainty is the fate of the Affordable Care Act, which was opened in November to immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children and are protected by the Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals program. If DACA eligibility for the act’s plans, or even the act itself, were to be reversed under Trump, that would leave roughly 40,000 California DACA recipients, and about 100,000 nationwide , without access to subsidized health insurance. On Dec. 9, a federal court in North Dakota issued an order blocking DACA recipients from accessing Affordable Care Act health plans in 19 states that had challenged the Biden administration’s rule. Clinics and community health workers are encouraging people to continue enrolling in health benefits. But amid the push to spread the message, the chilling effects are already apparent up and down the state. “¿Ya tiene Medi-Cal?” community health worker Yanet Martinez said, asking residents whether they had Medi-Cal as she walked down Pico Boulevard recently in a Los Angeles neighborhood with many Salvadorans. “¡Nosotros podemos ayudarle a solicitar Medi-Cal! ¡Todo gratuito!” she shouted, offering help to sign up, free of charge. “Gracias, pero no,” said one young woman, responding with a no thanks. She shrugged her shoulders and averted her eyes under a cap that covered her from the late-morning sun. Since Election Day, Martinez said, people have been more reluctant to hear her pitch for subsidized health insurance or cancer prevention screenings. “They think I’m going to share their information to deport them,” she said. “They don’t want anything to do with it.” This article was produced by KFF Health News , which publishes California Healthline , an editorially independent service of the California Health Care Foundation . ©2024 KFF Health News. NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyers formally asked a judge Monday to throw out his hush money criminal conviction , arguing that continuing the case would present unconstitutional “disruptions to the institution of the Presidency.“ In a filing made public Tuesday, Trump’s lawyers told Manhattan Judge Juan M. Merchan that anything short of immediate dismissal would undermine the transition of power, as well as the “overwhelming national mandate" granted to Trump by voters last month. They also cited President Joe Biden’s recent pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, who had been convicted of tax and gun charges . People are also reading... “President Biden asserted that his son was ‘selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted,’ and ‘treated differently,’" Trump’s legal team wrote. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, they claimed, had engaged in the type of political theater "that President Biden condemned.” Prosecutors will have until Dec. 9 to respond. They have said they will fight any efforts to dismiss the case but have indicated a willingness to delay the sentencing until after Trump’s second term ends in 2029. In their filing Monday, Trump's attorneys dismissed the idea of holding off sentencing until Trump is out of office as a “ridiculous suggestion.” Following Trump’s election victory last month, Merchan halted proceedings and indefinitely postponed his sentencing, previously scheduled for late November, to allow the defense and prosecution to weigh in on the future of the case. He also delayed a decision on Trump’s prior bid to dismiss the case on immunity grounds. Trump has been fighting for months to reverse his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to suppress her claim that they had sex a decade earlier. He says they did not and denies any wrongdoing. The defense filing was signed by Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, who represented Trump during the trial and have since been selected by the president-elect to fill senior roles at the Justice Department. Taking a swipe at Bragg and New York City, as Trump often did throughout the trial, the filing argues that dismissal would also benefit the public by giving him and “the numerous prosecutors assigned to this case a renewed opportunity to put an end to deteriorating conditions in the City and to protect its residents from violent crime.” Clearing Trump, the lawyers added, would also allow him to “to devote all of his energy to protecting the Nation.” Merchan hasn’t yet set a timetable for a decision. He could decide to uphold the verdict and proceed to sentencing, delay the case until Trump leaves office, wait until a federal appeals court rules on Trump’s parallel effort to get the case moved out of state court or choose some other option. An outright dismissal of the New York case would further lift a legal cloud that at one point carried the prospect of derailing Trump’s political future. Last week, special counsel Jack Smith told courts that he was withdrawing both federal cases against Trump — one charging him with hoarding classified documents at his Florida estate, the other with scheming to overturn the 2020 presidential election he lost — citing longstanding Justice Department policy that shields a president from indictment while in office. The hush money case was the only one of Trump’s four criminal indictments to go to trial, resulting in a historic verdict that made him the first former president to be convicted of a crime. Prosecutors had cast the payout as part of a Trump-driven effort to keep voters from hearing salacious stories about him. Trump’s then-lawyer Michael Cohen paid Daniels. Trump later reimbursed him, and Trump’s company logged the reimbursements as legal expenses — concealing what they really were, prosecutors alleged. Trump has said the payments to Cohen were properly categorized as legal expenses for legal work. A month after the verdict, the Supreme Court ruled that ex-presidents can’t be prosecuted for official acts — things they did in the course of running the country — and that prosecutors can’t cite those actions to bolster a case centered on purely personal, unofficial conduct. Trump’s lawyers cited the ruling to argue that the hush money jury got some improper evidence, such as Trump’s presidential financial disclosure form, testimony from some White House aides and social media posts made during his first term. Prosecutors disagreed and said the evidence in question was only “a sliver” of their case. If the verdict stands and the case proceeds to sentencing, Trump’s punishments would range from a fine to probation to up to four years in prison — but it’s unlikely he’d spend any time behind bars for a first-time conviction involving charges in the lowest tier of felonies. Because it is a state case, Trump would not be able to pardon himself once he returns to office. Copyright 2024 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Biden administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies , as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, told reporters Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. The update from Neuberger is the latest development in a massive hacking operation that has alarmed national security officials, exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and laid bare China’s hacking sophistication. The hackers compromised the networks of telecommunications companies to obtain customer call records and gain access to the private communications of “a limited number of individuals.” Though the FBI has not publicly identified any of the victims, officials believe senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures are among those whose whose communications were accessed. Neuberger said officials did not yet have a precise sense how many Americans overall were affected by Salt Typhoon, in part because the Chinese were careful about their techniques, but a “large number” were in the Washington-Virginia area. Officials believe the goal of the hackers was to identify who owned the phones and, if they were “government targets of interest,” spy on their texts and phone calls, she said. The FBI said most of the people targeted by the hackers are “primarily involved in government or political activity.” Neuberger said the episode highlighted the need for required cybersecurity practices in the telecommunications industry, something the Federal Communications Commission is to take up at a meeting next month. “We know that voluntary cyber security practices are inadequate to protect against China, Russia and Iran hacking of our critical infrastructure,” she said. The Chinese government has denied responsibility for the hacking.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel says he was surprised by reports of Shaq Barrett's unretirement plan

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Even when Penn State quarterback Drew Allar gets some praise, it's usually a backhanded compliment. They say he's a good game manager and stays within himself, or that he doesn't try to do too much. They mention he might not be flashy, but he gives the team a chance to win. And here's the thing about Penn State since Allar stepped under center: The Nittany Lions have won games. A lot of them. Sometimes that's hard to remember considering the lukewarm reception he often gets from fans. "I get it — we have a really passionate fan base and they're a huge part of our success," Allar said Sunday at College Football Playoff quarterfinals media day. "For us, we always want to go out there every drive and end with a touchdown, so when we don't do that, there's nobody more frustrated than us." The polarizing Allar is having a solid season by just about any standard, completing more than 68% of his passes for 3,021 yards, 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions while leading the sixth-seeded Nittany Lions to a 12-2 record and a spot in the Fiesta Bowl for Tuesday's game against No. 3 seed Boise State. But in a college football world filled with high-scoring, explosive offenses, Allar's no-frills performances often are the object of ire. The Penn State offense is a run-first bunch, led by the talented combo of Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen. "If we had a nickel for every time there was a Monday morning quarterback saying some BS stuff, we'd all be pretty rich," offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki said. "I think part of being a quarterback, especially at Penn State but really anywhere, is how you respond to and manage criticism." The 20-year-old Allar has made strides in that department after a trying 2023 season that finished with a 10-3 record. He says that's largely because once fall camp started back in August, he logged off the social media platform X. Allar said negative online experiences wore on him last year, and his phone number was leaked a few times, which added to the stress. He finally realized that controlling outside narratives was impossible, so the best course of action was to eliminate a needless distraction. "I've been more mentally free, as much as that sounds crazy," Allar said. "I think that's been a huge difference for me this year." The biggest criticism of Allar — and really Penn State as a whole during the 11-year James Franklin era — is that he isn't capable of winning the big games. He's 0-2 against rival Ohio State and threw a late interception against Oregon in the Big Ten title game earlier this month, which sealed the Ducks' 45-37 victory. He wasn't great in the CFP's first round, either, completing just 13 of 22 passes for 127 yards as Penn State muscled past SMU 38-10 on a cold, blustery day to advance to the Fiesta Bowl. But the quarterback is confident a better performance — aided by a game that will be played in comfortable temperatures in a domed stadium — is coming. "For me, I just have to execute those (easy) throws early in the game and get our guys into rhythm," Allar said. "Get them involved early as much as I can and that allows us to stay on the field longer, call more plays and open up our offense more. That will help us a ton, building the momentum throughout the game." Allar might be a favorite punching bag for a section of the Penn State fan base, but that's not the case in his own locker room. Star tight end Tyler Warren praised his quarterback's ability to avoid sacks, saying that the 6-foot-5, 238-pounder brings a toughness that resonates with teammates. "He's a football player," Warren said. "He plays quarterback, but when you watch him play and the energy he brings and the way he runs the ball, he's just a football player and that fires up our offense." Now Allar and Penn State have a chance to silence critics who say that the Nittany Lions don't show up in big games. Not that he's worried about what other people think. "I think it's a skill at the end of the day — blocking out the outside noise," Allar said. "Focusing on you and the process and being honest with yourself, both good and bad." Is infrastructure demand stealing tradies from housing? This CEO says yesNone

Two of Victoria's biggest regional health services have seen their WorkCover premiums double in 2023-24, in a year when hospitals to stay afloat. or signup to continue reading Bendigo Health suffered a 122 per cent surge in its premium, while Grampians Health saw an 83 per cent spike. South West Healthcare also saw its premium rise 95 per cent. But several other large services had much smaller increases, with Goulburn Valley Health's premiums rising 23 per cent, Northeast Health Wangaratta 30 per cent, and Albury Wodonga Health 26 per cent. The increase across the state hospital system was 51 per cent, or $84 million, for the year. ACM asked Bendigo Health, Grampians Health and South West Healthcare to explain the spike at their services and what was being done to address it, but they all declined to comment. ACM understands burnout and occupational violence claims may be playing a role, with several services recording a spike in incidents. The state government struck a deal in March 2024 to freeze remuneration under the WorkCover scheme and make certain mental health claims much more difficult. The government said this would make the "fundamentally broken" scheme "sustainable", but any benefits wouldn't be reflected in the 2023-24 figures. Bendigo Health recorded the biggest percentage increase of any large or medium health service in the state. Its premium jumped from $3.5 million in 2022-23 to $7.8 million in 2023-24, a rise of 121.7 per cent. Grampians Health's surge was smaller in percentage terms, at 82.7, but the dollar figure was much larger, jumping from $7.3 million to $13.4 million in 2023-24. For health services that both recorded operating deficits in the tens of millions, as well as requiring bailouts of $46 million and $75 million respectively, the added insurance pressure hurt their bottom line. South West Healthcare also recorded a 95.4 per cent jump, with its premium rising from $1.46 million to $2.85 million in 2023-24. ACM asked all three services whether it had raised the significant premium increases with the state government during recent negotiations over hospital budgets, but all three declined to respond. Some smaller services like Portland District Health also saw their premiums double. It is unclear why these services all recorded roughly 100 per cent jumps, while Goulburn Valley, Northeast, and Albury Wodonga Health all saw rises of 25 to 30 per cent. Opposition WorkCover spokeswoman Cindy McLeish said the blowout in premiums had because of extra pressure it put on hospital budgets. "Hospitals have been under enormous pressure having to find the additional money on top of increased costs, the threat of amalgamations, budget cuts, and now have had another blow to their finances, all of which will have a worsening impact on patient care," Ms McLeish said. South West Coast Liberal MP Roma Britnell blamed government mismanagement of the scheme for the premium rises. "The Allan Labor Government's mismanagement of WorkCover means Victorian health services pay higher premiums and less towards the essential services they should be providing," Ms Britnell said. "[It] is robbing Peter to pay Paul, to attempt to prop up their complete and utter financial mismanagement." Northern Victoria MP Wendy Lovell said Bendigo Health could ill afford the extra cost. "Bendigo Health is already struggling to cover their escalating costs, and had a $16m deficit in 2023-24," Ms Lovell said. "Labor cannot manage money and Victorians patients are paying the price." But the government said the surging costs were partly due to an increase in WorkCover premium rates. The rates changed to 1.8 per cent of remuneration in the 2023-24 financial year. The previous rate of 1.272 per cent had been maintained since 2015 and had not increased since 2001. The 1.8 per cent figure is now frozen, and combined with the other changes from March that make many mental health claims ineligible, the government said pressure on the scheme should fall. "Only Labor invests in our health system," a government spokesperson said. "The only political party that cuts and closes hospitals is the Liberal Party." Some health services are concerned a surge in occupational violence incidents may be pushing premiums up. Bendigo Health saw its reported occupational violence incidents jump by 100, from 389 in 2022-23 to 489 in 2023-24. But its incidents per full-time equivalent staff (FTE) was still relatively low at 14.5, compared to some other services. South West Healthcare's figure was 22 incidents per FTE, while Grampians Health was 24 per FTE. The small Heywood Rural Health recorded a figure of 57 incidents per FTE. It also saw its WorkCover premium jump 135 per cent, from $77,000 to $181,000, a huge jump for a small service. Correspondent covering key issues across regional Victoria, based in Melbourne. The Golden Knights have played the Edmonton Oilers enough times to know what to expect. But even this version of the Oilers is a head-scratcher. The Pacific Division rivals meet for the second time this season Tuesday at T-Mobile Arena, with the Knights looking to bounce back from their 6-0 loss to the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday, the worst home defeat in team history. Fresh off their first full practice in two weeks and with the grueling part of their schedule nearly behind them, the Knights (15-7-3) face another tall task Tuesday. They’ll try to slow down Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the first leg of a back-to-back. “It’s a big opportunity to bounce back and try to get on the winning track again,” center William Karlsson said. “A very good team coming in. I feel like, in the past, we’ve been good against good teams, and we’re hoping that’s the case again, as well.” McDavid (32 points) and Draisaitl (31) are still the cogs in the Oilers’ machine that make it go. Those two would normally be leading a high-powered offense, but right now, that’s not the case. Edmonton (13-9-2) is 17th in the league in scoring at 3.0 goals per game. That’s not a familiar sight to anyone watching the Oilers, who last season had the fourth-highest scoring offense in the league. The Oilers are playing more out of their defense under coach Kris Knoblauch since he took over early last season. The change in defensive coverages and keeping the defensemen more in front of the net helped them reach the Stanley Cup Final last season. “Other than that, offensively, they’re still a team that’s dangerous on the rush,” Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “They defend the rush well and transition from it.” The offense has come alive during the Oilers’ three-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 14-6. The Knights did a good job containing Edmonton’s rush in the last meeting Nov. 6, a 4-2 win at Rogers Place. It was one of the rare games in which neither McDavid nor Draisaitl had a point. A push is expected from Edmonton, which is 8-3-1 on the road this season. Karlsson is expected to draw the defensive assignment of McDavid. “It’s exciting, but also scary at the same time,” Karlsson said. “You’ve just got to be aware at all times. It’s tough, but you want to play against the best.” Projected lineup Ivan Barbashev — Jack Eichel — Pavel Dorofeyev Tomas Hertl — Nicolas Roy — Keegan Kolesar Brett Howden — William Karlsson — Victor Olofsson Tanner Pearson — Cole Schwindt — Alexander Holtz Brayden McNabb — Shea Theodore Noah Hanifin — Alex Pietrangelo Nicolas Hague — Kaedan Korczak Adin Hill Up next Who: Oilers at Golden Knights When: 7 p.m. Tuesday Where: T-Mobile Arena TV: ESPN+, Hulu Radio: KKGK (1340 AM, 98.9 FM) Line: Oilers -130, total 61⁄2 This is a developing story. A wild first season of the expanded Big 12 is down to what should be a chaotic final weekend. Through all the upsets, unexpected rises and falls, there are nine teams still in the mix to play in the conference championship game. No. 14 Arizona State and No. 17 Iowa State have the best odds, yet a multitude of scenarios could play out — 256 to be exact. There's even the possibility of an eight-team tie. It may take a mathematician to figure out which teams are in the Dec. 7 game in Arlington, Texas — even for the ones who win. Travis Hunter, Colorado. The Buffaloes' two-way star has excelled on both sides of the field, making him one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy. Cam Skattebo, Arizona State. The senior running back can do a little of everything, but excels at punishing would-be tacklers. He's one of the nation's leaders in yards after contact and the focal point of the Sun Devils' offense. Shadeur Sanders, Colorado. If it weren't for Hunter, Sanders might be the Heisman favorite. The son of coach Deion Sanders, Shedeur is fifth nationally with 3,488 yards passing and has been a big part of the Buffaloes' turnaround. DJ Giddens, Kansas State. The Wildcats' running back is one of the nation's most versatile players. He is ninth nationally with 1,271 rushing yards and has added 21 receptions for 258 yards. Tetairoa McMillan, Arizona. The Wildcats have struggled this season, but McMillan has not. He is third nationally with 1,251 receiving yards with seven touchdowns on 78 catches. Jacob Rodriguez, Texas Tech. The Red Raiders' junior linebacker leads the Big 12 with 68 tackles, averaging 10.2 per game. He also has four sacks. Brendan Mott, Kansas State. He's a menace to opposing quarterbacks, leading the Big 12 with 8 1/2 sacks. The Big 12 has nine teams already bowl eligible and two more a win away. The winner of the Big 12 championship game will be in the mix for a College Football Playoff spot. Arizona State, Iowa State, No. 19 BYU, Colorado, Kansas State, Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia have already clinched bowl berths. Kansas and Cincinnati can get into the postseason with wins this weekend. Gus Malzahn, UCF. Despite successes in recruiting, the Knights are 10-14 in two seasons since moving to the Big 12. Maybe not enough to get shown the door this year, but another mediocre season could lead UCF to make a change. Kyle Whittingham, Utah. Whittingham was one of the Pac-12's best coaches, leading the Utes to consecutive conference titles. Utah was expected to contend for the Big 12 title its first year in the league, but enters the final weekend 1-7 in conference play, which could push Whittingham toward retirement since it's doubtful he'd be fired. Neal Brown, West Virginia. The Mountaineers' coach was in a precarious spot at the end of last season and West Virginia hasn't lived up to expectations this season. The Mountaineers are eligible to go to a bowl game for the second straight season, but Brown could be on the hot seat even after signing a contract extension before the season. Josiah Trotter, West Virginia. The redshirt freshman is the latest Trotter to have success at the linebacker position, following the footsteps of his father, former Philadelphia Eagles player Jeremiah Trotter, and brother Jeremiah Trotter Jr., a current Eagles linebacker. Sam Leavitt, Arizona State. The Michigan State transfer has been just what the Sun Devils' needed: an agile quarterback who extends plays with his legs and rarely makes bad decisions. Bryson Washington, Baylor. The Bears' running back has rushed for 812 yards — 196 against TCU — and 10 TDs. TCU has the Big 12's highest rated 2025 recruiting class with six four-star players among 26 commitments, according to the 247 Sports composite. Receiver Terry Shelton of Carrollton, Texas, is the highest-rated recruit at 71st nationally. Baylor is next with five five-star players among its 20 commitments, including running back Michael Turner, rated 13th at his position out of North Richland Hills, Texas. Texas Tech is ranked seventh in the Big 12, but has four four-star recruits. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — The ball bounced through KaVonte Turpin's legs and stopped at the 1-yard line. He picked it up, made a spin move and was off to the races. Turpin's 99-yard kickoff return touchdown was the highlight of the Dallas Cowboys' 34-26 win at Washington on Sunday that ended their losing streak at five. That came with just under three minutes left, and then Juanyeh Thomas returned an onside kick for a TD to provide a little happiness in the middle of a lost season. President-elect Donald Trump said Saturday that he wants real estate developer Charles Kushner, father of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, to serve as ambassador to France. Trump made the announcement in a Truth Social post, calling Charles Kushner “a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker." Kushner is the founder of Kushner Companies, a real estate firm. Jared Kushner is a former senior Trump adviser who is married to Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka. The elder Kushner was pardoned by Trump in December 2020 after pleading guilty years earlier to tax evasion and making illegal campaign donations. Prosecutors alleged that after Charles Kushner discovered his brother-in-law was cooperating with federal authorities in an investigation, he hatched a scheme for revenge and intimidation. RELATED STORY | Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum are discussing tariffs. What should consumers expect? Kushner hired a prostitute to lure his brother-in-law, then arranged to have the encounter in a New Jersey motel room recorded with a hidden camera and the recording sent to his own sister, the man’s wife, prosecutors said. Kushner eventually pleaded guilty to 18 counts including tax evasion and witness tampering. He was sentenced in 2005 to two years in prison — the most he could receive under a plea deal, but less than what Chris Christie, the U.S. attorney for New Jersey at the time and later governor and Republican presidential candidate, had sought. Christie has blamed Jared Kushner for his firing from Trump’s transition team in 2016, and has called Charles Kushner’s offenses “one of the most loathsome, disgusting crimes that I prosecuted when I was U.S. attorney.” Trump and the elder Kushner knew each other from real estate circles and their children were married in 2009.

MPs who backed assisted dying Bill suggest concerns could see them change stanceA Cheshire teen has been charged in a fatal crash on Interstate 84 in Southington in February after state police allege that he was going more than 95 mph when he encroached another driver’s lane, causing a collision that led to both vehicles rolling over. Maxwell Nemec, 19, turned himself in on Thursday on charges of reckless driving, failure to maintain proper lane on a limited access highway, second-degree manslaughter and misconduct with a motor vehicle, according to Connecticut State Police . The charges stem from a crash on Feb. 15 that killed 58-year-old Lesley Petrafassi of Waterbury. According to the arrest warrant affidavit, the crash occurred on I-84 East in the area of Exit 31 shortly before 6:50 a.m. An off-duty state trooper was driving in the area when he stumbled upon the crash and spotted a Nissan Juke overturned in the center median under the West Street bridge. Just west of the Juke, the trooper saw a BMW X3 that also appeared to have overturned. State police received several 911 calls about the crash shortly after the trooper arrived. The off-duty trooper rushed over to the BMW and found that two men were tending to the female driver, who was later identified as Petrafassi, the warrant affidavit said. Petrafassi was breathing but was not responsive. When the trooper told the men he was going to check on the driver of the Juke, one of them identified himself as the driver and said he was not injured, according to the warrant affidavit. He was later identified as Nemec. Petrafassi was removed from the vehicle by members of the Southington Fire Department before she was put on a backboard and stretcher. She was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital before being airlifted to Hartford Hospital due to the extent of her injuries. Nemec was taken to the Hospital of Central Connecticut, where staff told police he appeared to only suffer cuts and bruises, the warrant affidavit said. According to the warrant affidavit, Petrafassi died in the hospital on March 3. An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner found that she died of blunt impact injury of her head and torso, the warrant affidavit said. Her death was ruled an accident. A witness to the crash told a state police investigator with the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad (C.A.R.S.) that the BMW was being driven in the left lane when the driver of the Juke passed on the right, the warrant affidavit said. Another driver in the center lane then tried to get into the right lane, leading to the driver of the Nissan moving into the middle lane, the witness said. The witness said when the driver moving to the right lane cut back to the center lane, the driver of the Juke cut to the left and collided with the BMW, the warrant affidavit said. Another witness said it appeared as though the Juke driver was attempting to pass the BMW when the collision occurred, according to the warrant affidavit. An investigation by state police found that Nemec was allegedly going somewhere between a little over 95 mph and nearly 103 mph at the time of the crash, the warrant affidavit said. Petrafassi was believed to be going somewhere between a little over 83 mph and 90 mph. The investigation alleges that Nemec was negotiating a right curve in the highway when he encroached the lane Petrafassi was in, the warrant affidavit said. This caused a sideswipe crash. Following the collision, the Juke rolled over into the center median and struck a guardrail, state police wrote. The crash sent the BMW into the center median where it struck a guardrail before rolling over and hitting the Route 229 bridge support pillar, the warrant affidavit said. State police said they believe the contributing factors in the crash were Nemec’s speed and inability to stay in his lane, encroaching more than five feet into Petrafassi’s lane, the warrant affidavit said. Following his arrest, Nemec was released on a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Dec. 19 in New Britain Superior Court. According to an obituary , Petrafassi left behind her husband, two daughters, multiple brothers, two grandchildren and multiple other family members. Born and raised in Waterbury, she attended Waterbury Public Schools and graduated from Wilby High School as part of the class of 1983, the obituary said. Petrafassi later earned her Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and finance from Post University. She was a dedicated team leader and supervisor of accounting and finance for Carling Technologies, Inc./Littelfuse for the past 14 years, according to the obituary. She was also a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church of Waterbury. “Lesley enjoyed cooking, shopping, playing cards, home remodeling, decorating, traveling, and especially laughing and spending time with family,” the obituary said.

Greenland and Panama reject Trump threatsBEIRUT (AP) — Insurgents' stunning march across Syria accelerated Saturday with news that they had reached the suburbs of the capital and that government forces had withdrawn from the central city of Homs. The government was forced to deny rumors that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The loss of Homs is a potentially crippling blow for Assad. It stands at an important intersection between Damascus and Syria’s coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus — the Syrian leader’s base of support and home to a Russian strategic naval base. The pro-government Sham FM reported that government forces took positions outside Syria’s third-largest city, without elaborating. Rami Abdurrahman who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Syrian troops and members of different security agencies have withdrawn from the city, adding that rebels have entered parts of it. The capture of Homs is a major victory for insurgents, who have already seized the cities of Aleppo and Hama , as well as large parts of the south, in a lightning offensive that began Nov. 27. Analysts said Homs falling into rebel hands would be a game-changer. The rebels' moves around Damascus, reported by the monitor and a rebel commander, came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including several provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions, led by a group that has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the United Nations. In their push to overthrow Assad's government, the insurgents, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS, have met little resistance from the Syrian army. For the first time in the country's long-running civil war, the government now has control of only three of 14 provincial capitals: Damascus, Latakia and Tartus. The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Saturday called for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” Speaking to reporters at the annual Doha Forum in Qatar, he said the situation in Syria was changing by the minute. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whose country is Assad's chief international backer, said he feels “sorry for the Syrian people.” In Damascus, people rushed to stock up on supplies. Thousands went to Syria's border with Lebanon, trying to leave the country. Many shops in the capital were shuttered, a resident told The Associated Press, and those still open ran out of staples such as sugar. Some were selling items at three times the normal price. “The situation is very strange. We are not used to that,” the resident said, insisting on anonymity, fearing retributions. “People are worried whether there will be a battle (in Damascus) or not.” It was the first time that opposition forces reached the outskirts of Damascus since 2018, when Syrian troops recaptured the area following a yearslong siege. The U.N. said it was moving noncritical staff outside the country as a precaution. Syria’s state media denied social media rumors that Assad left the country, saying he is performing his duties in Damascus. He has had little, if any, help from his allies. Russia, is busy with its war in Ukraine . Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up Assad's forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran has seen its proxies across the region degraded by regular Israeli airstrikes. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday posted on social media that that the United States should avoid engaging militarily in Syria. Pedersen said a date for talks in Geneva on the implementation a U.N. resolution, adopted in 2015, and calling for a Syrian-led political process, would be announced later. The resolution calls for the establishment of a transitional governing body, followed by the drafting of a new constitution and ending with U.N.-supervised elections. Later Saturday, foreign ministers and senior diplomats from eight key countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Egypt, Turkey and Iran, along with Pederson, gathered on the sidelines of the Doha Summit to discuss the situation in Syria. No details were immediately available. Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents were in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya. Opposition fighters were marching toward the Damascus suburb of Harasta, he added. A commander with the insurgents, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces had begun the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. HTS controls much of northwest Syria and in 2017 set up a “salvation government” to run day-to-day affairs in the region. In recent years, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani has sought to remake the group’s image, cutting ties with al-Qaida, ditching hard-line officials and vowing to embrace pluralism and religious tolerance. The shock offensive began Nov. 27, during which gunmen captured the northern city of Aleppo, Syria’s largest, and the central city of Hama , the country’s fourth largest city. Opposition activists said Saturday that a day earlier, insurgents entered Palmyra, which is home to invaluable archaeological sites had been in government hands since being taken from the Islamic State group in 2017. To the south, Syrian troops left much of the province of Quneitra including the main Baath City, activists said. Syrian Observatory said government troops have withdrawn from much of the two southern provinces. The Syrian army said in a statement that it carried out redeployment and repositioning in Sweida and Daraa after its checkpoints came under attack by “terrorists." The army said it was setting up a “strong and coherent defensive and security belt in the area,” apparently to defend Damascus from the south. The Syrian government has referred to opposition gunmen as terrorists since conflict broke out in March 2011. The foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey, meeting in Qatar, called for an end to the hostilities. Turkey is a main backer of the rebels. Qatar's top diplomat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, criticized Assad for failing to take advantage of the lull in fighting in recent years to address the country’s underlying problems. “Assad didn’t seize this opportunity to start engaging and restoring his relationship with his people,” he said. Sheikh Mohammed said he was surprised by how quickly the rebels have advanced and said there is a real threat to Syria’s “territorial integrity.” He said the war could “damage and destroy what is left if there is no sense of urgency” to start a political process. Karam reported from London. Associated Press writers Albert Aji in Damascus, Syria and Qassim Abdul-Zahra in Baghdad contributed to this report.

Creighton was without star Pop Isaacs, who was ruled out for the season on Saturday morning after undergoing surprise hip surgery. It was a startling turn, considering Isaacs led Creighton with 27 points in Wednesday's win over No. 1 Kansas. Neal and Steven Ashworth (17 points) anchored the backcourt in Isaacs' absence, combining to make 13-of-20 shots from the field. Neal made 7 of his 10 and Ashworth 6 of 10. Isaac Traudt also stepped up, making five 3-pointers off the bench to account for all 15 of his points. Ryan Kalkbrenner scored 12 points, making 4-of-5 attempts from the field, and added six rebounds. Creighton opened the second half on a 10-0 run, extending its lead to 49-27 before UNLV mustered an answer. Creighton made 10 consecutive shots early in the second half, extending its lead to a 62-41 with 12:20 remaining. Dedan Thomas Jr. paced UNLV with 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting, making 1 of 4 attempts from 3-point range. Jailen Bedford added a team-high 20 points for the Rebels on 8-of-15 shooting, scoring 17 points in the second half. Julian Rishwain added 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, but UNLV's second leading scorer for the season, Jeremiah Cherry, was limited to just four points in 16 minutes after early foul trouble. Creighton shot a resounding 63.3 percent from the field for the game, including going 10-of-20 from beyond the arc. Creighton outscored UNLV 38-34 in the paint and outrebounded them 34-21. UNLV finished the game shooting 42.2 percent field, making 7-of-21 attempts from distance. --Field Level MediaA man died Monday after a large wave trapped him beneath debris on a California beach, likely related to the storm pummeling the West Coast that brought high surf and flooding to central California, officials said. First responders were called to Sunset State Beach, a state park, around 11:30 a.m. Monday. The man was pronounced dead at a hospital. Other details were not immediately available and his name has not been released. The storm’s high surf also likely pulled a man into the Pacific Ocean around noon Monday at Marina State Beach along the Monterey Bay, authorities said. Strong currents and high waves forced searchers to abandon their efforts roughly two hours later as conditions worsened. The man remained missing Monday evening. In Santa Cruz, a pier under construction partially collapsed and fell into the ocean, taking three people with it. Two people were rescued by lifeguards and a third swam to safety. No one was seriously injured, Mayor Fred Keeley said. Residents were warned to stay away from low-lying areas near the beaches around the Santa Cruz Wharf, about 70 miles (112 kilometres) south of San Francisco, as the storm rapidly gained strength. The mayor said that section of the wharf had been damaged over time. The structure was in the middle of a $4 million renovation following destructive storms last winter. “It’s a catastrophe for those down at the end of the wharf," said David Johnston, owner of Venture Quest Kayaking, who was allowed onto the pier to check on his business. Tony Elliot, the head of the Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Department, estimated that about 150 feet (45 metres) of the end of the wharf fell into the water around 12:45 p.m. It was immediately evacuated and will remain closed indefinitely. Some of the wharf’s pilings are still in the ocean and remain “serious, serious hazards” to boats, the mayor said. Each piling weighs hundreds of pounds and is being pushed by powerful waves. “You are risking your life, and those of the people that would need to try and save you by getting in or too close to the water,” the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office said on the social platform X. Gov. Gavin Newsom's has been briefed and the state's Office of Emergency Services is coordinating with local officials, his office said. In the city of Capitola, police ordered guests at a waterfront hotel to evacuate if they had ocean-facing units. The county sheriff’s office ordered beachfront residents in nearby Rio Del Mar to evacuate as well. Forecasters warned that storm swells will continue to increase throughout the day. “We are anticipating that what is coming toward us is more serious than what was there this morning,” the mayor said. Ocean swells along California's central coast could reach 60 feet (18 metres) as the Pacific storm gains strength through Monday, the weather service said. “A rapidly developing storm will bring hurricane force winds to the areas well offshore of the Pacific Northwest tonight,” the weather service's Ocean Prediction Center said on X. The end of the pier that broke off had been shut down during renovations. The portion, which included public restrooms and the closed Dolphin restaurant, floated about half a mile (0.8 kilometers) down the coast and wedged itself at the bottom of the San Lorenzo River. Those who fell into the water were two engineers and a project manager who were inspecting the end of the wharf, officials said. No members of the public were in the area. Building inspectors were now looking at the rest of the Santa Cruz Wharf’s structural integrity. Monday's collapse came about a year after the Seacliff State Beach pier just down the coast was battered beyond repair by a heavy winter storm. Further up the West Coast, dangerous surf conditions and waves up to 30 feet (9.1 metres) were expected from the central Oregon coast up through southwestern Washington. Winds could peak near 80 mph (130 km/h) and a high surf warning in effect until 10 p.m. Monday night, forecasters said. In a post on X, the National Weather Service office in Portland, Oregon, said “it will likely go down as some of the highest surf this winter.” ___ Dazio reported from Los Angeles.ServiceNow Inc. stock outperforms competitors on strong trading day

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams keep doing just enough to win, and a team that appeared to be rebuilding this season has climbed all the way to the brink of another playoff berth. The Rams improved to 9-6 and took control of the NFC West on Sunday with their fourth straight victory since Thanksgiving. Their 19-9 win over the New York Jets in sub-freezing temperatures was not dominant — they trailed 9-6 entering the fourth quarter, and they were outgained by nearly 100 yards — but Los Angeles still matched its largest margin of victory this season and continued to look like a looming nightmare for any postseason opponent. The Rams have now won eight of 10 since their bye week, when they were 1-4 and the NFL world wondered whether they would trade Super Bowl MVP receiver Cooper Kupp or even quarterback Matthew Stafford to spur their roster reboot. Los Angeles decided not to punt its season, and Sean McVay’s team has driven from last to first. “You don’t want to ride the emotional roller coaster that these games can take you on,” McVay said Monday. “You do have the ability to stay steady, to stay the course and try to right the ship. Certainly that’s not complete by any stretch, but our guys have done an excellent job of not allowing the way that we started, especially in those first five games, to affect what we did coming off that bye.” RELATED COVERAGE The Darnold-Jefferson connection is thriving for the surging Vikings Patriots coach Jerod Mayo believes narrow loss to Bills shows potential of his young team Garrett’s comments about his future add wrinkle to Browns’ worst season since 0-16 in 2017 The Rams also have clinched their seventh winning record in eight regular seasons under McVay — an achievement that shouldn’t get lost in the recent successes of a franchise that had 13 consecutive non-winning seasons before it rolled the dice and hired a 30-year-old head coach back in 2017. After winning it all in February 2022 and then having the worst season by a defending Super Bowl champion in NFL history, the Rams have made the most of their time in between true powerhouse status and a major rebuild. They also started slowly last year, entering their bye at 3-6 before a 7-1 finish. The Rams can become the first team in NFL history to make back-to-back postseason appearances after being three games under .500 each year. These Rams don’t stand out on either side of the ball, although their talent level appears to be higher on offense than defense. Instead, they’ve mastered a delicate balance of complementary football — the offense and defense covering each other’s weaknesses and setting up their teammates for success. The Rams have scored more than 30 points just once all season, and they managed only 31 points in their last two games combined. Their defense has allowed only one touchdown in the past two games — but right before that, Josh Allen and the Bills racked up 42 points and 445 yards in the most recent of a few defensive stinkers from LA this season. The Rams keep winning anyway, and now they can clinch McVay’s fourth NFC West title by beating Seattle in two weeks. “Fortunately, we’re in a position where you don’t necessarily have to rely on other things to happen if you just handle your business,” McVay said. What’s working Kyren Williams and the offensive line are driving the Rams’ offense. After a slow start caused partly by McVay being forced to abandon the running game when the Rams repeatedly fell behind early, the 2023 Pro Bowler has surged to career highs of 1,243 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns with his 122-yard performance in New York. What needs help Stafford’s 110 yards passing were his fewest with the Rams and the second-fewest in his 16-year career from a full game. Sunday’s weather was a major factor, but the Rams must throw the ball effectively to somebody other than Puka Nacua. Kupp has just 193 yards receiving in his past five games combined. Stock up Defensive back Jaylen McCollough made a career-high nine tackles in only 31 snaps. The undrafted rookie continues to be a remarkable find, earning playing time alongside veteran safeties Quentin Lake and Kam Curl and fellow rookie Kam Kinchens. Stock down CB Cobie Durant didn’t play for the second straight week despite being cleared to return from his bruised lung. Veteran Ahkello Witherspoon got every snap in place of Durant, who started LA’s first 13 games. McVay praised Witherspoon’s recent play when asked why Durant didn’t get on the field in New Jersey. Injuries The Rams’ improved health, particularly on both lines, is the key to their surge. McVay reported no new injuries out of the road trip following Tyler Higbee’s successful season debut. Key number 12-1 — The Rams’ record in December with Stafford as their starter over his four years in LA. Next steps The Rams need to win at least one of their final two games to wrap up their first NFC West crown since 2021. They host eliminated Arizona on Saturday night, but can’t clinch the division unless the Seahawks lose to moribund Chicago. The Rams are currently the NFC’s third seed, but that doesn’t matter a whole lot because both the third and fourth seeds will have to play one of the NFC North’s two powerful wild-card teams in the opening round. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFLHONG KONG , Dec. 3, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Dunxin Financial Holdings Limited ("Dunxin" or the "Company") (OTC Pink: DXFFY), a company engaged in real estate operation management and investment and a digital technology security business in Hong Kong , today announced that it plans to change the ratio of its American depositary shares ("ADSs") from one (1) ADS representing four hundred and eighty (480) Class A ordinary shares to one (1) ADS representing sixty thousand (60,000) Class A ordinary shares. www.mnl168 Indiana should be able to breathe easy this week. It has very little chance of making it into the Big Ten championship game. On the other hand, Georgia's spot in the Southeastern Conference title game is so risky that if the Bulldogs lose they might have been better off sitting it out. Over the next two weeks, the warm familiarity of conference championship games, which began in 1992 thanks to the SEC, could run into the cold reality that comes with the first 12-team College Football Playoff. League title games give the nation's top contenders a chance to hang a banner and impress the CFP committee, but more than ever, the bragging rights come with the risk of a season-wrecking loss — even with an expanded field. “I just don’t think it’s a quality conversation,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said last week, sticking with the time-honored cliche of looking no further than the next weekend's opponent. Those who want to have that talk, though, already know where Georgia stands. The Bulldogs (9-2) are ranked sixth in this week's AP Top 25 and projected somewhere near that in the next set of CFP rankings that come out Tuesday. They already have two losses and will have to beat No. 3 Texas or No. 20 Texas A&M in the SEC title game on Dec. 7 to avoid a third. How bad would a third loss hurt? The chairman of the selection committee insists that a team making a conference title game shouldn't count against it. What that really means won't be known until the games are played and the pairings come out on Dec. 8. "We're going to let the season play out," Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said. “But I think teams who make that championship game, the committee looks at them and puts them in high esteem." All of which could be good news for Indiana in the unlikely event the Hoosiers find themselves playing for the Big Ten title. IU is coming off a flop in its first major test of the season, a 38-15 loss to Ohio State last weekend. After his team's first loss of the season, coach Curt Cignetti took offense to being asked whether the Hoosiers were still a playoff-caliber team. “Is that a serious question?” he asked. “I’m not even gonna answer that. The answer is so obvious.” What might hurt Indiana, which dropped five spots to No. 10 in the AP poll, would be another drubbing. The Hoosiers would be at least a two-touchdown underdog in a title-game matchup against top-ranked Oregon. The odds of that happening, however, are slim. It would take a Michigan upset over No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday, combined with a Maryland upset over No. 4 Penn State and, of course, an Indiana win over Purdue (1-10). Because this is the first year of the 12-team playoff, there's no perfect comparison to make. For instance, this is the first time Power Four conference champions are guaranteed a spot in the playoff. But 2017 provides a textbook example of how a team losing its conference title game suffered. That year, Alabama had one loss (to Auburn) and didn't play in the SEC title game, but made the four-team field ahead of Wisconsin, which was 12-1 after a loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game. Ohio State didn't make it either — two losses didn't get teams into a four-team field. Neither did undefeated UCF. Saturday's results made things a little more clear for the rest of the conferences: — In the Big 12, winning the title game will probably be the only way for Arizona State (9-2), BYU (9-2), Iowa State (9-2), Colorado (8-3) or anyone else to earn a spot in the 12-team playoff. None are ranked higher than 14th in the AP poll. — The Atlantic Coast Conference could get multiple bids. Miami (10-1), SMU (10-1) and Clemson (9-2) all finished in the top 12 of this week's AP poll. They were cheering the loudest when both Alabama and Ole Miss suffered their third losses of the season. — The Mountain West would be a one-bid conference, but that's only a sure thing if Boise State wins. A loss by the Broncos could open the CFP for Tulane or Army of the American Athletic. Both the MWC and AAC title games take place at 8 p.m. on Dec. 6. — Where the committee places Alabama and Ole Miss on Tuesday will be an indicator of what it thinks of teams with three losses that played very strong schedules. — It could also set the stakes for Georgia, which faces the prospect of loss No. 3 in the Dec. 7 title game, assuming the Bulldogs beat rival Georgia Tech this week. — Clemson has been steadily climbing. Its 34-3 loss to Georgia came on Aug. 31. Is it ancient history to the committee, though? — Indiana's status as a playoff team — in, out, nervous? — will become apparent. The Ohio State game was Indiana's first against a top-flight opponent. Then again, it is the Hoosiers' only loss and their weak Big Ten schedule is not their fault. Sources close to the transition, including political allies, donors, and personal friends, revealed, the news report said, that Donald Trump Jr. has helped shape critical appointments, including championing Senator JD Vance as a potential vice-presidential pick and blocking former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from joining the cabinet. Reuters sources, which include political allies, donors, and personal friends, reported that Don Jr. has played a key role in promoting or blocking candidates, notably championing Senator JD Vance as Trump’s running mate and preventing former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from joining the cabinet. In addition to his involvement in the transition, Don Jr. is set to join conservative venture capital fund 1789 Capital. However, the news report citing sources said that he will continue to host his politics-focused podcast and support candidates who align with his father 's political philosophy. Despite his growing influence, Don Jr. is unlikely to be involved in day-to-day White House operations, though he will offer advice to his dad . Donald Trump Jr.’s primary focus has been ensuring that cabinet picks are loyal to Trump and share his anti-establishment worldview, according to the report. This includes a preference for protectionist economic policies and a reduction in military interventions and foreign aid. The news report pointed out that Trump Jr.'s advocacy for certain candidates, however, may face significant challenges, as two of his favored choices— Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for US health official and Tulsi Gabbard for intelligence chief—could encounter a difficult Senate confirmation process. Kennedy, an environmental activist, has drawn controversy over his anti-vaccine views, while Gabbard has been criticized for her past comments on Russia and Syria. Further complicating matters, Donald Trump Jr. was a key figure in lobbying for Vance to be Trump’s running mate. While Vance remains popular among Trump’s base, his anti-corporate rhetoric and opposition to Ukraine aid have raised concerns among some donors. However, Trump ultimately embraced Vance, providing Don Jr. with additional political influence during the transition, a source was reported to have said. According to sources close to the matter, as per the report, Donald Trump Jr. was particularly keen on securing a prominent position for his personal friend and former U.S. ambassador to Germany, Ric Grenell, as Secretary of State. However, despite his advocacy, President-elect Trump ultimately chose Senator Marco Rubio for the role. Two of the sources close to Donald Trump Jr. said, the report stated, that he has not been involved in all personnel decisions and is not working full-time on the transition or from Mar-a-Lago. His role has largely focused on high-level appointments, with little influence expected over lower-level personnel vetting, according to one of the sources. These sources clarified that Don Jr.'s involvement in the transition process remains strategic, rather than exhaustive.COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Former South Carolina Sen. Kay Patterson, who rose from cleaning offices at the segregated Statehouse to serving as a state legislator for over 30 years died Friday. He was 93. The South Carolina Democratic Party announced Patterson’s death saying he “left an indelible mark on our state. Senator Patterson commanded everyone’s attention with his wit and wisdom.” The statement did not list a cause of death. Patterson was born in 1931 in Darlington County and raised by his grandmothers. They recalled his hardheaded spirit early, recommending he not take jobs as a golf caddy or shoe shiner because he was likely to mouth off to white people in segregated 1940s South Carolina and get in trouble. Instead, Patterson served in the military and then got his teaching degree through the GI Bill at Allen University. While in college, he cleaned offices at the segregated capitol where he and other Black people couldn’t be unless they were working. “When I was a janitor, Black people couldn’t go in the Statehouse,” Patterson said in a 2004 interview with the University of South Carolina. “And then one day I came back down here as a member of the House and then in ’84, I came back sitting in the Senate as a senator. Now that’s a hell of a long way to come.” Patterson spent 30 years in education and was elected to the South Carolina House in 1974 and the Senate 10 years later after U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn urged him to run for the upper chamber seat. In a statement, Clyburn called Patterson “a trusted leader, a tireless champion for civil rights, and a treasured friend. He was a person of strength, determination, wisdom, and a long proponent of removing the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse dome.” Patterson was also the first Black person to serve on the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees since Reconstruction. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Patterson was a key member of both the House and Senate, He served on the budget committees in both chambers and was a major voice in support of civil rights, public education and helping poor people. He adamantly demanded the Confederate flag be removed from atop the Statehouse dome and inside the House and Senate chambers long before they were taken down in 2000. The lifelong Democrat said the final years of his political career were the toughest after Republicans took over state government. His seniority no longer mattered and he felt many newer Republicans were religious hypocrites who claimed to help others but only cared for people just like themselves. A few years before he retired from the Statehouse, Patterson said it was important to respect elders and supervisors, but not be afraid to speak up if bothered or something was on one’s mind. “That’s just my hallmark ever since I was a little child. It will get you in trouble now, but you can sleep well at night. And learn to treat everybody as human beings with respect,” Patterson said in the interview with the university’s Champions of Civil and Human Rights in South Carolina program. “You can sleep real good at night. Right now, I’m 73 years old and sleep like a log when I go to bed because I know I’ve done no wrong to my fellow man,” Patterson said. Advertisement Advertisement

NORAD’s Santa tracker was a Cold War morale boost. Now it attracts millions of kidsFresh graduates, their faces pale and uncertain, spent 2024 poring over newspaper job advertisements, applying for any suitable position and frantically appearing for recruitment exams in Dhaka. The year was marked by somewhat regular public recruitments until June -- before a nationwide student movement turned into a full-blown anti-government campaign. However, the private sector offered far fewer new jobs than the number of fresh graduates entering the job market. Throughout the year, economic and political gauges constantly beeped red: a slowing economy, falling capital machinery import, sluggish private sector credit appetite, a nationwide upheaval culminating in the government ouster and the formation of an interim government. Amid the turmoil, the overall job market fared poorly in 2024. The year began with roughly 10 lakh unemployed graduates, according to the latest official data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). In Bangladesh, public jobs represent around 6 percent of the employment while the private players accommodate the remaining workforce. In 2024, a combination of factors such as global crises, local political instability, a worsening US dollar crisis and high inflation halted expansion plans. Therefore, private firms saw their appetite for fresh credit waning. Private sector credit growth decelerated to 8.30 percent in October, the lowest in 41 months, according to the Bangladesh Bank. This figure is the lowest since May 2021, when credit growth fell to 7.55 percent during the Covid-induced lockdowns. Besides, private investment as a percentage of the country's GDP has declined for the past three years. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, the private investment to GDP ratio decreased by 0.67 percentage points year-on-year to 23.51 percent, according to BBS data. These figures suggest that businesses were hesitant to expand or take up new ventures, limiting the potential for new job opportunities. AKM Fahim Mashroor, CEO of Bdjobs.com, the largest job site in Bangladesh, said hiring remained stagnant in the first half of 2024. This trend had been continuing for the previous two years. "Political upheaval severely impacted hiring between July and September," Mashroor said. "However, the situation has shown some improvement in October to November." He said that hiring has not fully normalised as the economic situation still remains uncertain. After the government ouster in August and the formation of the interim government, a crackdown on corruption opened up investigations of several business tycoons. This also impacted the labour market to some extent. For instance, Beximco Group recently laid off nearly 40,000 workers across its 15 apparel units in Gazipur citing a lack of work orders. Following the August changeover, Beximco came to the spotlight with its Vice-Chairman Salman F Rahman, an adviser to the previous prime minister who allegedly weaponised his influence for business gains, being arrested and now staying behind bars. 'FORMAL JOBS MIGHT HAVE SHRUNK' "The year 2024 has seen a sharp decline in investment and output growth. The projected GDP growth for the year is significantly lower than recent trends," said Rizwanul Islam, a special advisor for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva. "Consequently, employment growth must have also declined substantially," he said. "In all likelihood, growth in formal sector jobs, especially in manufacturing, has been negative," he added. "In such circumstances, people often resort to lower-quality jobs in the informal economy or share work in agriculture." "To my knowledge, little has been done to address overall employment and youth employment in particular," he added. "The government set an ambitious target of increasing the [private investment to GDP] ratio to 27.34 percent in the FY25 budget. However, achieving this goal remains uncertain due to persistent economic challenges and uncertainty," said Deen Islam, an associate professor of economics at the University of Dhaka. 'TICKING TIME BOMB' A white paper panel that assessed the state of the economy and submitted its report to the interim government referred to the mismatch between employability and labour market dynamics in Bangladesh as a "ticking time bomb". According to the white paper, the unemployment rate among educated youth has increased 2.5 times since 2010 due to a mismatch between their qualifications and the structure of industries and the economy. "Not only that, despite having tertiary-level education, these graduates are ill-prepared for the market due to low technical knowledge," the paper added. Over the past 12 years, the number of tertiary graduates has increased by about 2.5-fold, accounting for around 9 percent of the total labour force in 2022. Hand in hand, the unemployment rate of this group increased from 4.9 percent in 2010 to 12 percent in 2022. "Special attention must be given to address the precarious job situation, especially for educated job seekers," said Rizwanul Islam. He also said, "It's easy to say that they should create their own jobs. However, in a situation where the real economy is struggling, it is difficult for anyone to find a way to create decent jobs, let alone for newcomers to the labour market. Special programs are needed to help them." "Ultimately, there is no alternative to reviving the economy's growth trajectory." All efforts must be made to restore investor confidence and channel investments towards sectors that can drive higher employment growth, he said. “Out of the mouths of babes”, or so the Bible-y expression goes. Its meaning is simple: Sometimes those most naive among us accidentally reveal the most. Whether you think that Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex is a babe, and using whichever definition of the word you fancy (hottie or immature tyke), well, that’s between you and your god slash browser history, but a line from his nearly two-year-old memoir has taken on a grim new light. As shocking as it might be to consider, it is less than two years since he published his roman-a-tone-deaf, Spare , a book that carved a swath through the bestseller lists and the sleepless nights of Buckingham Palace courtiers. We all know the high notes – that he lost his virginity in a field behind a pub, Prince William clocked him in a row over wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex and he thought it was fine to describe an Eton house matron as THING. It feels like I’ve been writing about Spare since long before my fingers were bleeding nubbins thanks to oh-so-much keyboard tappity-tapping, but here we are. But it’s a line in chapter one that we need to revisit. The scene: The lush gardens of Frogmore House on April 9, 2021, the day the royal family laid Prince Philip and his favourite barbecue tongs to rest. Only one month earlier, the Sussexes’ Oprah Winfrey interview had aired and jaws had dropped so extravagantly reams of physios were put on high alert. Charles walks behind Prince Philip’s coffin during the Ceremonial Procession at Windsor Castle on April 17, 2021. Picture: Leon Neal/WPA Pool/Getty Images The duke had flown back for the sombre day and Charles and Prince William joined him to talk. Picture: Leon Neal/WPA Pool/Getty Images The duke had flown back for the sombre day and Charles and Prince William had joined him to talk. In the ensuing conversation, he writes that the King begged his sons, “Please, boys – don’t make my final years a misery”. “His voice sounded raspy, fragile. It sounded, if I’m being honest, old,” Harry writes. Just think about that line, knowing what we know now: “Please, boys – don’t make my final years a misery”. Yes, the “please boys” line got plenty of media play at the time when it was read entirely through the lens of a plaintive father pleading for some peace from his warring sons and, to some degree, taking the paternally avoidant route out. (The House of Windsor might have come to grips with 21st century technology, but their emotional bandwidth is distinctly still 19th). But today, that “final years” bit, a throwaway reference you’d have to assume, well, it’s a different story entirely. Prince Harry and Meghan talk to Oprah Winfrey. Picture: Joe Pugliese/Harpo Productions/AFP Prince Harry’s Spare. Picture: Adam Berry/Getty Images We are fast approaching the 10-month mark since the Palace knocked socks and sundry other garments off us all by announcing that, what was meant to be a relatively routine treatment for an enlarged prostate, had revealed the monarch has cancer. (Side note: It’s never been revealed what sort of cancer the 76-year-old actually has). Then, with a hitherto unthinkable degree of honesty and plain dealing, which is to say, a teeny smidgen of the stuff, Crown Inc embarked on trying to keep the ship of monarchy afloat as the King started, and continues to undergo, weekly treatment. There have been green shoots and signs of hope that things are going well. His doctors signed off on him undertaking October’s hugely successful tour of Australia and Samoa (just ask the 10,000 people who headed to the Opera House to see him and Queen Camilla) and taking an 11-day break from his treatment regimen. This month, the Telegraph reported he has “moved into the next phase” of his “cancer journey”, whatever that quite means. Earlier this month, a source close to His Majesty told Vanity Fair ’s Katie Nicholl that the King is “doing very well and that’s very apparent”. But set against the backdrop of this year’s events, that reference to his “final years” takes on a much more ominous and depressing hue. Maybe we could be particularly liberal and read “final” to mean another 20 or so. Maybe. What is clear is that the discovery of Charles’ cancer has up-ended and overturned whatever sense of certainty formerly existed when it came to the calculus about how much time he would have on the throne. The King begged his sons, ‘don’t make my final years a misery’. Picture: Max Mumby/Pool/Indigo/Getty Images The discovery of Charles’ cancer has up-ended and overturned whatever sense of certainty formerly existed about his time on the throne. Picture: Daniel Leal/AFP Those Windsor genes of Charles’ are ferric stuff. Before his diagnosis, I would have said that the very healthful King, a man with a strong lifelong relationship with muesli and the benefits of long, hilly walks, could well surpass the late Queen who passed away at 96. Hell, why not shoot for his grandmother’s example and refuse to go anywhere before his 101st birthday? Thanks to the miracle of modern medicine and the army of homoeopathic tinctures, drops, balms and unguents that His Majesty is no doubt deploying alongside the best that a test tube can offer, he might very well yet hit his century and have to send himself a congratulatory 100th birthday letter. But what that Spare line does is to drive home the uncertainty and darkness the world is operating in when it comes to His Majesty’s health. The ancient Romans liked to dissect an occasional dove to divine the future and this Charles situation has a certain feel to it. Straws have and will continue to be clutched as we all operate in a vacuum. All tea leaves can and will be read. At least there is one thing that we can say with some confidence – despite the challenges of 2024, he is ‘happier than ever’. That royal source told Vanity Fair’s Nicholl: “I think the past year has shown the king to be very human. He recognises that there’s a limit to what he can do, but I do think he’s happier this year than last year. There’s a levity about him and a sense of joy. You see him hugging people and laughing. He’s happy to be here doing what he loves”. Dow futures gain 300 points Monday following Trump's pick of Bessent for Treasury: Live updatesNoneWASHINGTON >> Top national security advisers to President-elect Donald Trump and outgoing President Joe Biden are working “hand in glove” to pose a united front against U.S. adversaries during the presidential transition, Trump adviser Mike Waltz said on Sunday. Waltz, a Republican congressman tapped by Trump to serve as his national security adviser after taking office Jan. 20, said he is in discussions with his Biden administration counterpart, Jake Sullivan, as the United States confronts an escalating war in Ukraine and ongoing hostilities in the Middle East. “For our adversaries out there that think this is a time of opportunity, that they can play one administration off the other, they’re wrong,” Waltz, a Trump loyalist and former Army Green Beret, told “Fox News Sunday.” “We are hand in glove,” Waltz added. “We are one team with the United States in this transition.” Trump could face a rocky Senate confirmation process for other top national security picks viewed as inexperienced or otherwise flawed, including Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman who has been chosen as intelligence chief, and Pete Hegseth, a former Fox News host nominated to head the Defense Department. Gabbard has implied that Russian President Vladimir Putin had valid grounds for invading Ukraine and stirred controversy by meeting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the midst of his bloody crackdown on dissidents in 2017. Hegseth, a military veteran, has been accused of sexual assault, though no criminal charges were filed, and Hegseth has said the encounter was consensual. Trump’s initial choice for U.S. attorney general, Matt Gaetz, withdrew from consideration last week in the face of Senate opposition over allegations of illicit drug use and sex trafficking. Despite lawmaker concerns about Trump nominees, Sen. John Barrasso told “Fox News Sunday” in a separate interview that Republicans are aiming to confirm most of Trump’s cabinet picks quickly so that they would be in place soon after he takes office on Jan. 20. “It’s critical for us in the Senate to make sure that on day one, President Trump has confirmed his national security team,” said Barrasso, who will serve as No. 2 Republican when his party takes control of the chamber in January. Waltz said the incoming Trump administration is prepared to work with European NATO allies and others to end what he called an escalating conflict in Ukraine, where Russian forces have begun using a new intermediate-range ballistic missile. “It is just an absolute meat grinder of people and personnel on that front. It is more like World War One trench warfare,” Waltz said, emphasizing the need to begin negotiations. “What we need to be discussing is who’s at that table, whether it’s an agreement, an armistice, how to get both sides to the table, and then what’s the framework of a deal,” Waltz said. “That’s what we’ll be working with this administration until January and then beyond.”

Senator Edgardo Kueider (Peronist-Entre Ríos), currently under house arrest in Paraguay on charges of currency contraband and money-laundering, was expelled from the Upper House as “morally unfit” by an overwhelming 60-6 votes last Thursday. On Monday Kueider had formally requested a leave of absence from Vice-President Victoria Villarruel last Monday but his former colleagues of the Unión por la Patria caucus electing him under the Frente de Todos label back in 2019 had already presented the bill for his expulsion while on Thursday morning federal judge Sandra Arroyo Salgado had requested that he be stripped of his parliamentary immunity so that she could order his arrest. President Javier Milei gave a nationwide broadcast to commemorate the first anniversary of his administration on the day last Tuesday, thanking Argentines for their “sacrifice which will not be in vain” and forecasting the advent of happy days with “the recession over and the country beginning to grow.” Flanked by his entire Cabinet with Cabinet Chief Guillermo Francos and presidential chief-of-staff Karina Milei seated by his side, Milei said: “Every day we draw closer to inflation becoming a bad memory” before detailing the “fiscal degeneracy” of his inheritance from Frente de Todos with uncontrolled money-printing. He then highlighted the work of the Deregulation Ministry created only half a year ago, assuring that his administration had produced eightfold the structural reforms of the 1989-99 Carlos Menem presidency with just “15 percent of the deputies and 10 percent of the senators.” For the future he pledged a “deep chainsaw” to streamline the state, along with tax, pension, labour and other reforms. His administration would slash the number of national taxes by 90 percent, he announced, as well introduce a free competition of currencies so that “every Argentine may use the currency they want in their daily transactions.” Finally, he confirmed that he would be seeking a free trade agreement with the United States, as well as pushing reforms in the Mercosur trade bloc, reducing its common external tariff. Milei concluded by saying that “the hour of the common man has arrived.” Last month’s inflation of 2.4 percent was the lowest since mid-2020 when the economy was paralysed by a coronavirus pandemic lockdown, falling well below all expectations which still forecast a figure below three percent but much closer to it. Inflation up to the final month of this year thus reaches 112 percent with an annual rate of 166 percent, according to the data posted by the INDEC national statistics bureau in midweek. The key item of food and beverages registered the lowest increases of all at 0.9 percent while the main deviations from the trend were education (5.1 percent) and water, electricity, gas and fuels (4.5 percent). A core inflation (excluding regulated and seasonal prices) of 2.7 percent indicates that the downward streak of four months running is unlikely to be sustained this month. The CNDC (Comisión Nacional de Defensa de la Competencia) anti-monopoly watchdog will initiate summary proceedings against seven prepaid health care schemes (Galeno, the British and German Hospitals, Medifé, Swiss Medical, Omint and OSDE) as well as the chamber grouping them and its then-president Claudio Belocopitt for presumed cartel practices between last December and April, presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni said on Thursday. United States president-elect Donald Trump on Thursday announced his choice to head the US Embassy here, a Cuban-born South Florida doctor who already knows President Javier Milei. In Trump’s words, “I am pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Lamelas, MD, MBA, will serve as our United States Ambassador to Argentina. Peter is a physician, philanthropist and an incredible businessman, best known for founding the largest Urgent Care healthcare company in Florida. As a child, Peter and his family fled Communist Cuba and LEGALLY immigrated to the USA, starting with nothing and achieving the American dream,”receiving the rapid “Make America Great Again” thanks of the envoy-to-be. The weekend announcement by presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni that Florencia Misrahi had been removed from the helm of ARCA (Agencia de Recaudación y Control Aduanero) tax bureau was confirmed by Decree 1078/2024, published in the last Monday and confirming newly appointed Foreign Ministry official Juan Pazo as her successor. Adorni had attributed her ouster to her plans to tax streamers and influencers but the decree explained it as “deviation ... from the simplification of the tax system.” Effective control of the agency is expected to continue under DGI internal revenue chief Andrés Vázquez and Customs head José Andrés Velis, as it has done in the seven weeks since ARCA was born as a relaunch and a rebranding of the previous AFIP tax bureau. Despite tensions and infighting, the big guns of the Peronist movement – ex-president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (formally taking over the party chair two days later), Buenos Aires Province Governor Axel Kicillof, last year’s presidential candidate Sergio Massa and La Cámpora leader Máximo Kirchner – all managed to hold a summit in Moreno last Monday with calm on the surface but not too much resolved beyond Kicillof’s plans to separate national and provincial elections being temporarily blocked. Party militants were not admitted to the conclave but had to congregate outside. Perhaps the most interesting note of the day was not anything at the summit but Kicillof’s statement that his province “will not permit” the privatisation of Aerolíneas Argentinas. Kicillof denied that the airline was a loss-making company which would burden provincial tax-payers if the La Plata government bought up shares, assuring that Aerolíneas had received no financial assistance from the national government in the course of this year. Supreme Court justice Juan Carlos Maqueda, who retires at the end of this month, last Monday pronounced himself as “seriously worried” about the future of democracy and the institutions with “clouds on the horizon” for constitutional democracy globally in a “disorganised world” where the Chinese model separating capitalism from democracy is admired. His comments were made at a Buenos Aires City Bar Association tribute to his legal career, including 22 years at the Supreme Court now ended by his reaching the statutory retirement age of 75 later this month. His Supreme Court colleagues Horacio Rosatti and Carlos Rosenkrantz were in the audience but not the third, Ricardo Lorenzetti. The age for legal firearm possession has been reduced from 21 to 18 years by Decree 1081/2024, published last Tuesday in the , although “psychic or physical abnormalities” also bar the ownership of guns at the younger age and weapons must be certified at the local police station to ensure no criminal record. Last May the government presented a bill to regularise firearm possession and simplify the paperwork. The veteran labour lawyer and former deputy Héctor Recalde died last Monday at the age of 86. Máximo Kirchner brought the news to the Peronist summit that same day in Moreno where a tribute was paid. Recalde was for many years the chief lawyer of the CGT union umbrella. President Javier Milei last Tuesday issued a decree forbidding the display of images on public buildings, as well as naming them after political personalities until 10 years after their death. The initiative is viewed as heading off any repetition of the gigantic images of Eva Perón on the former Social Development Ministry and the widespread use of the late Néstor Kirchner’s name both before and shortly after his death. Former first lady Fabiola Yáñez last week resumed her offensive against ex-president Alberto Fernández, reproaching him for never having apologised for all the times he bashed her, further accusing him of infidelity with up to 20 women and insisting: “No money can heal those wounds.” Pointing out the contradiction between the ex-president’s feminist discourse and gender violence, the former first lady also complained of the loneliness of life at the top. Despite tension with the government due to his adamant resistance to the entry of private capital into football clubs, AFA Argentine Football Association president Claudio 'Chiqui' Tapia not only invited presidential chief-of-staff Karina Milei and presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni to join him last Wednesday at a CONMEBOL event in Luque, Paraguay, but also shared a cordial photo with the former. The event was to confirm South American participation as a minor partner in hosting the centennial 2030 World Cup, even if all but three of the 104 matches will be played in Spain, Portugal and Morocco with Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay hosting at least one each. Tapia further confirmed last Wednesday that Argentina’s single match would be played at the River Plate stadium. Ads Space Ads Space
