To address these challenges, ICFO researchers have presented a novel approach based on colloidal quantum dots in an Advanced Materials article . The team managed to emit coherent light (a necessary condition to create lasers) in the extended SWIR range with large colloidal quantum dots made of lead sulfide (PbS). This new CQD-based technology offers a solution to the aforementioned challenges while maintaining compatibility with silicon CMOS platforms (the technology used for constructing integrated circuit chips) for on-chip integration. Their PbS colloidal quantum dots are the first semiconductor lasing material to cover such a broad wavelength range. Remarkably, the researchers accomplished this without altering the dots' chemical composition. These results pave the way towards the realization of more practical and compact colloidal quantum dots lasers. Further to that, the team demonstrated lasing—for the first time in PbS quantum dots—with nanosecond excitation, replacing the need for bulky and costly femtosecond laser amplifiers. That was achieved by employing larger quantum dots, thus increasing the absorption cross-section of the dots tenfold, leading to a dramatic reduction in the optical gain threshold—the point at which the laser light emission becomes an efficient process. The ability to produce low-cost, scalable infrared lasers in the extended SWIR range addresses critical bottlenecks in various technologies. This innovation has transformative potential for diverse applications, including hazardous gas detection, eye-safe LIDAR systems, advanced photonic integrated circuits, and imaging within the SWIR biological window. Industries relying on LIDAR systems, gas sensing, and biomedicine could greatly benefit from this cost-effective and integrable solution. Moreover, this breakthrough supports the transition to silicon-compatible photonic integrated circuits, enabling greater miniaturization and widespread adoption. "Our work represents a paradigm shift in infrared laser technology ," said ICREA Prof. Gerasimos Konstantatos. "For the first time, we've achieved lasing in the extended SWIR range with solution-processed materials at room temperature, paving the way for practical applications and the development of more accessible technologies." The winner of Valley Waters’ Ward 4 byelection said she is new to politics but has a mindset of “learning as I grow.” Fran Keirstead, of Norton, was the winner Monday as Valley Waters was one of 10 communities taking part in the New Brunswick municipal byelections. Keirstead received 73 votes, with former Norton councillor Theresa Ann Teakles receiving 53 votes and Chris Smith, co-owner of Green Meadows Special Care Home, receiving 13. The vacancy opened when former Norton mayor Ann-Marie Snyder resigned her council seat in September due to moving out of the village. Keirstead is to be sworn in at the Jan. 14 council meeting, according to a post by Valley Waters on Facebook. Keirstead, 32, an educational assistant at Sussex Regional High School, said she was “quite surprised, actually” by the results. “The part I’m excited about is having a voice for the younger generation that are raising the children right now,” she said. “I’m still like, ‘whoa.’” Teakles had been elected to Norton council in 2008, but lost in the 2012 municipal election and ran again unsuccessfully in 2016. Keirstead said deputy mayor Carey Beth Gillis had seen her posts about repairs to Norton Elementary School and suggested she put her name forward in the byelection. “It was something that would have never crossed my mind,” Keirstead said. “I have no background in this kind of stuff. She assured me that they would teach me everything I needed to know, and my mindset of learning as I grow was valid, so that’s what made me decide to give it a go.” Keirstead grew up in Norton and studied human services at NBCC Saint John in 2014, working in auto parts sales before moving to her goal of being an EA. She said that as a mother of young kids, she wants to make Valley Waters a place they can live when they grow up. “I hope that they’ll stay and want to raise their families here,” Keirstead said. Valley Waters council is made up of a mayor and six councillors representing four wards. The council was elected in 2022 as part of local government reform, which formed Valley Waters as an amalgamation of Norton, Springfield, Kars, Wickham and parts of two local service districts. A byelection in 2023 filled two spots on council after the number of representatives for each ward was changed as part of the reform process, with Beth Gillis winning with 66 votes in Ward 2 and Lindsey Ganong winning with 37 votes in Ward 3. The DeX app for Windows, not to be confused with the broader DeX platform that turns your phone into a PC, lets you mirror your phone screen to a PC and easily drag and drop files between the devices. It’s very similar to Microsoft’s Phone Link app, which Samsung and Microsoft have collaborated closely on in recent years, so it makes sense that Samsung is favoring Microsoft’s native Android linking app in Windows. The change will take place in One UI 7, which is expected to debut in beta form later this month. Samsung initially teased One UI 7 during its developer conference last month, promising to deliver a developer beta before the end of the year.
