Hezbollah fires about 250 rockets and other projectiles into Israel in heaviest barrage in weeks BEIRUT (AP) — Hezbollah has fired about 250 rockets and other projectiles into Israel, wounding seven people in one of the militant group’s heaviest barrages in months. Sunday's attacks in northern and central Israel came in response to deadly Israeli strikes in central Beirut on Saturday. Israel struck southern Beirut on Sunday. Meanwhile, negotiators press on with cease-fire efforts to halt the all-out war. And Lebanon's military says an Israeli strike on a Lebanese army center in the southwest killed one soldier and wounded 18 others. Israel's military has expressed regret and said its operations are directed solely against the militants. Israel cracks down on Palestinian citizens who speak out against the war in Gaza UMM AL-FAHM, Israel (AP) — In the year since the war in Gaza broke out, Israel's government has been cracking down on dissent among its Palestinian citizens. Authorities have charged Palestinians with “supporting terrorism” because of posts online or for demonstrating against the war. Activists and rights watchdogs say Palestinians have also lost jobs, been suspended from schools and faced police interrogations. Palestinians make up about 20% of Israel's population. Many feel forced to self-censor out of fear of being jailed and further marginalized in society. Others still find ways to dissent, but carefully. Israel's National Security Ministry counters that, “Freedom of speech is not the freedom to incite.” Somalia says 24 people have died after 2 boats capsized in the Indian Ocean MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Somalia's government says 24 people died after two boats capsized off the Madagascar coast in the Indian Ocean. Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi said 46 people were rescued. Most of the passengers were young Somalis, and their intended destination remains unclear. Many young Somalis embark every year on dangerous journeys in search of better opportunities abroad. A delegation led by the Somali ambassador to Ethiopia is scheduled to travel to Madagascar on Monday to investigate the incident and coordinate efforts to help survivors. Forecasts warn of possible winter storms across US during Thanksgiving week WINDSOR, Calif. (AP) — Forecasters in the U.S. have warned of another round of winter weather that could complicate travel leading up to Thanksgiving. California is bracing for more snow and rain while still grappling with some flooding and small landslides from a previous storm. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for California's Sierra Nevada through Tuesday, with heavy snow expected at high elevations. Thousands remained without power in the Seattle area on Sunday after a “bomb cyclone” storm system hit the West Coast last week, killing two people. Republicans lash out at Democrats' claims that Trump intelligence pick Gabbard is 'compromised' FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Republican lawmakers are pushing back against criticism from some Democrats that President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead U.S. intelligence services is “compromised” by her comments supportive of Russia and a meeting with an ally of that country. The accusation came from Sen. Tammy Duckworth. The Illinois Democrat says she has concerns about the pro-Russian views expressed by Tulsi Gabbard, who was tapped for the post of director of national intelligence. Duckworth’s comments on Sunday drew immediate backlash from Republicans. The rising price of paying the national debt is a risk for Trump's promises on growth and inflation WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump has big plans for the economy. He also has big debt problem that'll be a hurdle to delivering on those plan. Trump has bold ambitions on tax cuts, tariffs and other programs. But high interest rates and the price of repaying the federal government’s existing debt could limit what he’s able to do. The federal debt stands at roughly $36 trillion, and the spike in inflation after the pandemic has pushed up the government’s borrowing costs such that debt service next year will easily exceed spending on national security. Moscow offers debt forgiveness to new recruits and AP sees wreckage of a new Russian missile KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law granting debt forgiveness to new army recruits who enlist to fight in Ukraine. The measure, whose final version appeared on a government website Saturday, underscores Russia’s needs for military personnel in the nearly 3-year-old war, even as it fired last week a new intermediate-range ballistic missile. Russia has ramped up military recruitment by offering increasing financial incentives to those willing to fight in Ukraine. Ukraine’s Security Service on Sunday showed The Associated Press wreckage of the new intermediate-range ballistic missile that struck a factory in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Thursday. After Trump's win, Black women are rethinking their role as America's reliable political organizers ATLANTA (AP) — Donald Trump's victory has dismayed many politically engaged Black women, and they're reassessing their enthusiasm for politics and organizing. Black women often carry much of the work of getting out the vote, and they had vigorously supported the historic candidacy of Kamala Harris. AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 120,000 voters, found that 6 in 10 Black women said the future of democracy was the single most important factor for their vote this year, a higher share than for other demographic groups. But now, some Black women are renewing calls to emphasize rest, focus on mental health and become more selective about what fight they lend their organizing power to. Heavy rains in Bolivia send mud crashing into the capital, leaving 1 missing and destroying homes LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — Authorities say that a landslide caused by heavy rains has flooded dozens of homes in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. It swept away a young girl, spurred evacuations and left parts of the city without electricity. Torrential rain on Saturday caused a river to spill its banks Sunday, dislodging mud from a southwestern La Paz neighborhood where low-slung, shoddily built dwellings dot the hillside. The torrent of debris and soil surged down a narrow ravine early Sunday, wrecking some two dozen homes and flooding another 40. Hours after the rain subsided, rescuers were still searching for the missing 5-year-old girl. Emergency workers saved six residents suffering from hypothermia. 'Wicked' and 'Gladiator' make gravity-defying theater debuts NEW YORK (AP) — “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” have debuted in theaters with a combined $270 million in ticket sales. Their worldwide performance breathed fresh life into global box office results that have struggled lately. Together the films turned the moviegoing weekend into one of the busiest of the year. Jon M. Chu’s lavish big-budget musical “Wicked,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, debuted with $114 million domestically and $164.2 million globally. Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” is a sequel to his 2000 best picture-winning original and launched with $55.5 million in ticket sales. “Moana 2” is being released Wednesday, so it looks like Hollywood might be looking at historic sales over the Thanksgiving holiday.

NBA superstar Nikola Jokic isn't happy with where the Denver Nuggets are at 29 games into the season. In the aftermath of their latest defeat ( to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday ), the Joker spoke up about the current situation and how the Nuggets can improve going forward. "I think how bad we've played, we're in a good spot. We are not even close to where we're supposed to be," said Jokic, via Harrison Wind . "But I think with how bad we've played, we're in a good spot. We need to start thinking about what I can do for this team to help, not what the team can do to help me. Is it screening, is it rolling, is it passing, is it shooting, is it rebounding, is it playing defense? I think we should point (the thumb not the finger)." The Nuggets gave up 149 points on the loss on Friday, and their defensive effort was so poor that head coach Michael Malone had to call his team out for it after the game . Sadly, for the Nuggets, these kinds of games have become a habit for them this season and it's why they are just 3 games above .500 at 16-13 (7th in the West). Their current 2-game skid has put them half a game back from the Lakers and they might slide even further if they don't tighten up some of their sloppy play, particularly on defense. Thanks to the efforts of Nikola Jokic, who is averaging 30.5 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 9.5 assists per game this season, the Nuggets are a top-six offensive team with an averaging scoring record of 117.2 points per game. On defense, however, the Nuggets have almost nothing to offer. This season, they are 19th in the NBA on that end of the floor and give up a whopping 114.8 points per game. With the departures of Bruce Brown and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in back-to-back summers, the Nuggets lost several key defenders on the perimeter with nothing to make up for it. Now, not even the greatness of Nikola Jokic can keep the Nuggets afloat. In the Western Conference, being three games above .500 is just not good enough, and for a Nuggets team that's just a year and a half removed from their first championship, this is not a place where they wanted to be. This trade deadline, watch for the Nuggets to be aggressive in their pursuit of reinforcements defensively, and they might look to add some players on the wing who can bring both shot-making and defense to the three-point line. If not, the Nuggets will likely continue to struggle as they attempt to keep up with other contenders. With Nikola Jokic in his prime, the franchise owes it to him to go all-out and do whatever it takes to win. We will see soon enough what they are willing to do and if it's enough to get the Nuggets back on track. The Nuggets play tonight, December 28th, against the Detroit Pistons at Ball Arena (9:00 PM EST) and they play again on the 30th, against the Utah Jazz at Delta Center. Finally, the Nuggets will be defending home court on Wednesday, January 1st at 9:00 PM EST against Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks. This article first appeared on Fadeaway World and was syndicated with permission.WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors moved Monday to dismiss the criminal charges against President-elect Donald Trump that accused him of plotting to overturn the 2020 election and to abandon the classified documents case against him, citing longstanding Justice Department policy that says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. The decision by special counsel Jack Smith, who had fiercely sought to hold Trump criminally accountable for his efforts to subvert the 2020 election, represented the end of the federal effort against the former president following his election victory this month despite the election-related cases and multiple other unrelated criminal charges against him and is headed back to the White House. The decision, revealed in court filings, also amounts to a predictable but nonetheless stunning conclusion to criminal cases that had been seen as the most perilous of the multiple legal threats Trump has faced. It reflects the practical consequences of Trump’s victory, ensuring he enters office free from scrutiny over his hoarding of top secret documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden. Smith’s team emphasized that the move to abandon the prosecutions, in federal courts in Washington and Florida, was not a reflection of their view on the merits of the cases but rather a reflection of their commitment to longstanding department policy. “That prohibition is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government’s proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Government stands fully behind,” the prosecutors wrote in Monday’s court filing in the election interference case. The decision was expected after Smith's team began assessing how to wind down both the 2020 election interference case and the separate classified documents case in the wake of Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. The Justice Department believes Trump can no longer be tried in accordance with longstanding policy that says sitting presidents cannot be prosecuted. Trump has cast both cases as politically motivated, and had vowed to fire Smith as soon as he takes office in January. The 2020 election case brought last year was once seen as one of the most serious legal threats facing the Republican as he vied to reclaim the White House. But it quickly stalled amid legal fighting over Trump’s sweeping claims of immunity from prosecution for acts he took while in the White House. The U.S. Supreme Court in July ruled for the first time that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution, and sent the case back to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to determine which allegations in the indictment, if any, could proceed to trial. The case was just beginning to pick up steam again in the trial court in the weeks leading up to this year’s election. Smith’s team in October filed a lengthy brief laying out new evidence they planned to use against him at trial, accusing him of using “resorting to crimes” in an increasingly desperate effort to overturn the will of voters after he lost to Biden. ___ Associated Press writer Colleen Long contributed to this story. Part 1: Bill’s NBA Six-Pack. Plus Peter Schrager on the Jets’ Downfall, Buffalo’s Leap, and Drake Maye. It’s hard to believe, but in Harvey Ludington’s first Mustang Classic as a freshman he finished third at 175 pounds. Ludington dropped his semifinal match to Mount Olive’s Hunter Perez, 5-4, before coming back for third. He avenged the loss in the state team tournament and went on to win the state title as a freshman. Ludington reached the state final again as a sophomore and won his second crown as a junior. He will be trying to win his third title in March before heading off to Iowa to continue his career. He took a step towards his ultimate goal with a dominating performance in Saturday’s Mustang Classic with two pins and two technical falls - all in the first period. He was named Upper Weight Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the title for the third time in his home school. “It means a lot to me especially being the last time in my school with losing my freshman year and ending off good and not ending off bad,” said Ludington. “I try not to (think about the loss), but it happened. It was one of my three losses (in his high school career). I can’t really forget about it.” Ludington, who just recovered from a torn groin, recently switched his college commitment from Arizona State to Iowa. “I don’t even know how to explain it, you go there, the coaches, the training, it’s a whole different animal,” said Ludington. “I don’t know how to explain (Iowa coach Tom) Brands. He’s just Brands. “One of my biggest goals when I was eight years old was to go to Iowa. I loved the meanness. They don’t really care, they back it right up.” Ludington said when recruiting started up Iowa looked like they were going to bring in former NCAA champion AJ Ferrari, but when that didn’t happen he came on their radar late and he started re-thinking his decision. Before heading to Iowa, Ludington wants to become Brick Memorial’s first three-time state champion. “I want to prove why I’m going to Iowa,” said Ludington. “With that comes a lot of training, I can’t slack. To be the first one from my school is a little stressful. “It’s huge for me especially since Brick has become a family.” Ludington moved from Nevada to New Jersey prior to high school. Brick Memorial coach Mike Kiley said he knew Ludington was going to make a mark - though he’s exceeded his expectations. “We’re excited for him to finish out his chapter here and follow him on the next level,” said Kiley. “He has some future ahead of him. It shows the level of physicality and mindset he wrestles with, it fits the Iowa mold. “I knew we had something special. I saw the tournaments he won before he got here. I didn’t know he’d be like this.” He’s definitely come a long way from that first Mustang Classic. “That’s a different animal now,” said Kiley. Johnson senior 113-pounder Zach Belverio came into Saturday’s Mustang Classic seeded fifth. But he was confident because he knew something he felt none of his opponents did. “Seeds are based on last season, and I’m a completely different wrestler this year and nodody knew that,” said Belverio. “I felt good because I knew I put the work in.” Belverio was a state qualifier a year ago, but in the quarterfinals he knocked off Camden Catholic’s Chase Martino - who went further in state wrestlebacks - by a 19-8 major decision. He then stunned top-seeded Michael DiBiase, who reached the blood round at states, 8-5. In the final, Belverio took on another underdog in West Deptford’s 10th-seeded Ryan McConaghy. McConaghy took out Washington Township No. 7 seed Dylan Hetzel, Brick Memorial No, 2 seed Sonny DiMatteo and Red Bank Catholic third seed Joseph Vezzosi. But McConaghy ran into his match in the final as Belverio rolled to a 17-9 decision. Belverio was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the lightweights. “In the (offseason), I focused every day on getting better on technique and doing the little things right,” said Beverio. “I’m confident I can be a state champ. I didn’t wrestle my best here, and I still got the job done and that’s what matters. I just wanted to push the pace today and show I’m state-championship level.” It was a strong tournament for Camden Catholic, which crowned four champions. Sammy Spaulding took home the title at 132 before the Irish went on a run with Michael Craft (150) and Kage Jones (157) both bringing home titles and Jaden Simpson adding another at 175. Camden Catholic finished second in team scoring despite bringing just 10 wrestlers. Mount Olive led the team scoring with 106 points, bringing home one champion in 215-pounder Nico Gonzalez, who pinned top-seeded Trey Tallmadge of Brick Memorial in the final. Overall, 10 Mount Olive wrestlers claimed a spot on the podium. There was plenty of school representation among the other winners. The remaining Mustang Classic champions were Middletown North’s Thomas Blewett (106), Caldwell’s Dom Holler (120), Washington Township’s Colton Hagerty (126), Jackson Liberty’s Armani Mcann (138), Ocean Township’s Michael Volek (144), Point Pleasant Boro’s Jake Clayton (165) and Brick Memorial’s Ben Szuba (285).
