Giants' 10th straight loss showed once again that they need a young QBRed Bull Racing's Max Verstappen enters Saturday's Las Vegas Grand Prix on the verge of clinching his fourth consecutive Formula 1 world championship. There are various scenarios that will land Verstappen his fourth title on Saturday night, the most basic of which is him simply finishing ahead of Lando Norris at the race's conclusion. Verstappen can still finish behind Norris in the race and clinch the championship however, as Norris would need to outscore Verstappen by at least three points to keep his hopes alive. Prior to the Miami Grand Prix in May, it would have seemed like a fever dream that another driver would be competing with Verstappen for the title this late in the season. Despite McLaren having the best car since Red Bull engineer Adrian Newey departed four days prior to the Miami GP, Norris felt he wasn't fully prepared for a championship battle of this magnitude. "I probably wasn't outright ready to go up against Red Bull and Max," Norris said. "I think I am now, and it's probably too late (for that). ... Maybe there are other drivers in the past that were ready for such an occasion. But no one has gone up against Max so early in their career, halfway through the season, and put up, I think, a pretty reasonable fight. "I mean, I'm there, but there's no one else doing it, you know? So I've done my best. I've not done well enough. I've always admitted that. I think Max is probably one of the best drivers ever in Formula 1. I don't think you'll get a much better driver than Max in Formula 1 ever again." Saturday's foray in Vegas will also be the penultimate race for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, as the sport's most popular driver heads to the legendary Ferrari outfit to partner with Charles Leclerc next season. Hamilton had a fiery response to Mercedes' principal Toto Wolff's comment that "everyone has a shelf life" in regards to Hamilton's exit to Ferrari potentially being a positive for Mercedes. "Honestly I feel like I'm in the best place I've been all year mentally and considering how bad the last race was," Hamilton said. "I think that says enough. Nothing can take me down. I'm still here, I'm still fighting and I'm going to continue to push. I've got a team that I generally still love, even though I'm leaving and I want to make sure to give them the best I can in these next races." Hamilton drove with the same fire in Thursday's free practice, finishing first in both sessions. To sweeten the deal for Mercedes, Russell finished second to Hamilton in the first practice session and third behind Hamilton and Norris in the second session. Norris' second place finish in FP2 capped off a relatively successful day for the Brit as he also finished third behind Russell in FP1. It wasn't as good of an evening for Verstappen, who finished fifth in FP1 before tire issues forced him to a P17 finish in FP2. Sergio Perez provided little encouragement for Red Bull either, finishing behind Verstappen at 19th in the second practice session. Bill Clinton, the former US president who has faced a series of health issues over the years, was admitted to hospital Monday in Washington after developing a fever, his office said. "President Clinton was admitted to Georgetown University Medical Center this afternoon for testing and observation after developing a fever," the 78-year-old's deputy chief of staff Angel Urena said on social media platform X, adding Clinton "remains in good spirits." Clinton was previously hospitalized for five nights in October 2021 due to a blood infection. In 2004, at age 58, he underwent a quadruple bypass operation after doctors found signs of extensive heart disease. He had stents implanted in his coronary artery six years later. The health scare motivated him to make lifestyle changes, including adopting a vegetarian diet, and he has since spoken publicly about his efforts. Clinton's health last made headlines in November 2022 when he tested positive for Covid-19. He said at the time that his symptoms were "mild" and he was "grateful to be vaccinated and boosted." Clinton, who led the United States for two presidential terms from 1993-2001, is the second-youngest living US president, after 63-year-old Barack Obama. He was born mere months after fellow former US president George W. Bush and President-elect Donald Trump. Though his prosperous time in office was marred by scandals, he has enjoyed a second life in the two decades after his presidency, which has seen him venture into numerous diplomatic and humanitarian causes. bur-jgc/ahaAdvisors Asset Management Inc. reduced its position in Marvell Technology, Inc. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. Former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee scorched his old team on Sunday after watching them get eliminated from playoff contention in a loss to the New York Giants. Indianapolis had three turnovers and allowed four Drew Lock touchdown passes in the 45-33 defeat. The Colts dropped to 7-9 on the season and were officially out of contention. McAfee wrote a scathing post on X, criticizing the organization, ripping those who tried to get him "booed out of the city" and announcing he will not renew his season tickets. (IMAGN) "A blind person could see the red flags on this team.. Work ethic questions, NEVER happens on good teams.. Preparation commitment questions, NEVER happens on good teams.. Late to meetings, NEVER happens on good teams.. Late to/skipping treatment, NEVER happens on good teams.. The franchise QB (Anthony Richardson) tapped out of a game.. on 3rd down.. in the red zone.. because he was tired... NEVER HAPPENED in the history of the NFL," McAfee wrote. "That’s literally the only thing you need to tell someone (who knows ball) and they could tell you everything about this team..." He wrote that if a franchise quarterback left in the middle of a game because he was tired, the "immediate response" would be that the team has "no chance." "And to the surprise of nobody.. that was the response by everybody who’s ever played/coached the game before but.. Colts blogs and fans who have been covering the Colts since 2020 and more recent knew better than everybody... Started personally attacking me and trying to kick me out of town," McAfee continued. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig) "When I said Joe Flacco gives us a better chance to win than AR immediately after the tap out.. I would’ve said whatever backup QB we had on the roster. That can’t be what the face of your team is doing.. just can’t be.. and to a bigger aspect of it all, somehow AR thought it was ok to do that. That’s a locker room issue.. that’s a culture issue.. thats an indicator of a loser attitude radiating thru a building that was built by greats. "I have no idea how they fix it.. I don’t think it’s like a light switch. "Alright, we’re gonna become Pros now" but... maybe it is, but what do I know? "Oh wait..... how this was all gonna work out. I knew that." McAfee added that he wouldn’t be renewing his season tickets and hoped the team returned to its winning ways. "As a multiple year season ticket holder (not renewing).. and someone who has actively, daily, attempted to be an additive to this beautiful city. I hope they become a good franchise again.. this city deserves it.. the OGs in the Colts building deserve it (equipment managers, trainers, ticketing, PR, sales).. and on the flip side the players/coaches in that building deserve whatever happens to them. Your unwarranted arrogance, laziness, and lack of professionalism has lead you to ANOTHER early vacation... which is probably what most of you entitled bums have been hoping for. "I don’t speak for the city.. and I don’t speak for all ex Colts players because I was only a punter.. nominated for the HOF 3 times now but nonetheless.. I speak from my own perspective.. I’ve never seen a group waste opportunities/talent/money more than this group." AFL premiership coach Mark Williams has been putting in time with the Australian men’s Test team for their main training session ahead of the Boxing Day Test. The 66-year-old was spotted at the MCG in a Cricket Australia polo with the team on Tuesday morning. Williams coached 273 games at Port Adelaide, including leading the Power to their first premiership since joining the AFL from the SANFL. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today He last coached a senior game in 2010, but has worked as an assistant at a number of clubs since then, including Melbourne, GWS and Richmond. Williams also took charge of VFL outfit Werribee for two years in 2019 and 2020, having also coached at VAFA club AJAX for the previous two years. He remains head of development at Melbourne. The AFL great is not the first former footy coach to appear in Australian cricket gear during a massive Test series. In 2023, then-recently sacked Gold Coach coach Stuart Dew appeared in the Aussie camp in England for the Ashes. Dew was photographed in a full Australian kit, alongside players and coaches during training at Old Trafford ahead of the fourth Test. South Australian-born Dew reportedly has a close relationship with SA’s Travis Head. Just like Jasprit Bumrah for India, Head has been far and away Australia’s best player, having scored just one fewer run than the rest of his fellow top seven batters combined. But India believe a bounce barrage may be the best way to tame their Australian nemesis. Pacer Akash Deep, who made a valuable contribution with the bat for India to avoid the follow-on in the drawn Test at the Gabba, revealed plans for Head needed to change ahead of Boxing Day. The 30-year-old has been in rare form, smashing centuries in Adelaide and Brisbane to certify himself as India’s most in-demand wicket. Head has made 409 runs at an average of 81.80 across the first three Tests of the Border-Gavaskar series, dominating India even as the rest of Australia’s batters have faced significant issues against Jasprit Bumrah. The left-hander already broke Indian hearts last year when he starred in Australia’s World Test Championship and ODI World Cup final wins. “As fast bowlers, we will stick to the same deliveries and maintain discipline in our bowling,” Deep said on Sunday in Hindi, translated to English. “We will bowl from both over and around the wicket, assess the pitch and conditions, and plan accordingly. “I think Travis Head, in particular, struggles against short balls. “We won’t let him settle at the crease. “We’ll target specific areas and hope to force him into mistakes, which will create chances for us.” - With AAP

Less than 24 hours after he faced his former team in Ottawa, the Senators have announced a roster decision involving ex-Vancouver Canuck Zack MacEwen. It's been a tough season so far for the Ottawa Senators and after last night's loss to the Vancouver Canucks, they sit seventh in the NHL's Atlantic Division with a record of 8-11-1 through 20 games. As the Ottawa Senators look for ways to improve their roster, it appears that their first order of business will be calling up a former second round pick from the AHL for a boost in their bottom-six. Ottawa Senators place Zack MacEwen on waivers In a post on their official team website on Sunday afternoon, the Ottawa Senators announced that they've placed forward Zack MacEwen on waivers, while calling up Zack Ostapchuk from Belleville of the AHL. The club recalled forward Zack Ostapchuk from Belleville, while placing forward Zack MacEwen on waivers.' the team announced. All 31 other teams around the National Hockey League will have an opportunity to place a waiver claim on Zack MacEwen before tomorrow at 2 pm ET (11 am PT), with the Chicago Blackhawks getting first dibs by being last place in the standings . If Zack MacEwen clears waivers on Monday afternoon, which is the most likely scenario, he'll be assigned to the American Hockey League's Belleville Senators where he spent ten games last season. In 19 games with Ottawa this season, the Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island native has three points (two goals, one assist), 16 penalty minutes and is a plus-one. Zack MacEwen's stint with the Vancouver Canucks MacEwen's time with the Vancouver Canucks organization began back in 2017 when he was signed as an undrafted free agent during his third season in the QMJHL. The 28-year-old appeared in 55 games across parts of three seasons in Vancouver, putting up nine points (six goals, three assists), 69 penalty minutes and had an even-rating. His tenure with the Vancouver Canucks came to an end in October 2021 as he was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Flyers. We'll have to wait and see tomorrow if any team(s) place a waiver claim on Zack MacEwen, but the most likely scenario is that he'll clear and be assigned to the American Hockey League. Some reforms are imperative for holding an election. A fair, impartial and acceptable election will be arranged on completion of some reforms, said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Sunday (November 24) afternoon. Speaking to reporters after taking oath at Supreme Court Judges' Lounge, he said their intentions were sincere and elections would be held only after some reforms. However, he said, "Specific date and time for holding the next general elections cannot be said right now. Let me take over my responsibilities first." We expect to receive the recommendations to carry out reforms as the Election Reform Commission is working in this regard." Nasir Uddin said election will be organized along with all political parties. "Please, keep faith in us. Our intentions are good. Benralizumab: London scientists create first treatment for asthma attacks in 50 yearsCorrection: Indigenous Affairs-Native Voting storyUlster coach Richie Murphy says Juarno Augustus signing is a statement of intent

Shafali Verma’s explosive knock of 197 runs from 115 balls in the Women’s One Day Cup Trophy was nothing short of a masterclass in batting. Leading Haryana as captain, she played a pivotal role in guiding her team to a mammoth total of 390 runs in their 50 overs. The knock was particularly significant following a rough patch in her international career, where she struggled in the series against New Zealand and was dropped by the Indian women’s cricket selection committee. Shafali’s recent performances had raised questions about her place in the Indian team. During the New Zealand series, she was able to muster only 56 runs across three innings, which led to her exclusion from the squad. Despite this setback, Verma’s response on the field has been nothing short of remarkable, demonstrating her capability to bounce back under pressure. Her recent innings for Haryana served as a reminder of her immense talent and determination to prove her worth. When asked about Shafali’s exclusion from the Indian team, captain Harmanpreet Kaur kept her comments focused on the team’s performance. “I can only talk about the team. The team is here, and we focus on what we can do to win the series. Regarding Shafali or any other player, it’s better to ask the right people,” Kaur said, reinforcing the team’s collective approach and not delving into individual selections. In a recent encounter against the West Indies, Smriti Mandhana’s brilliance with the bat played a key role in India’s victory. Mandhana’s 77 runs helped India post 217/4 in the series-deciding match in Mumbai. Her fiery innings overshadowed an early collapse, including a two-ball duck by Uma Chetry and a slow start by Rodrigues. Despite these early setbacks, Rodrigues made a recovery, scoring 39 runs off 28 balls, including four boundaries, building an essential partnership with Mandhana. At No. 4, Raghvi Bisht made an impactful debut for India, scoring 31 not out off 22 balls, which included two boundaries and a six. Her first-ever six off Karishma Ramharack was a highlight, and she continued to contribute to India’s total with her all-around batting display. Bisht’s performance helped India create a solid foundation for the team in the series finale. Shafali Verma’s explosive comeback and the young talents like Raghvi Bisht making their mark showcase the bright future of women’s cricket. As the women’s team gears up for more international challenges, the performances of players like Verma, Mandhana, Rodrigues, and Bisht are sure to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the game.

He claims Panama is imposing “ridiculous” fees on ships passing through this vital waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Panama Canal is a man-made waterway that cuts through central Panama for 51 miles, using a system of locks and reservoirs to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This route saves ships from traveling an extra 7,000 miles around South America’s Cape Horn. “The Panama Canal is considered a VITAL National Asset for the United States, due to its critical role to America’s Economy and National Security,” Trump said on Truth Social on Dec. 21. “The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the U.S. This complete ‘rip-off’ of our Country will immediately stop,” he added. Trump repeated these claims during a speech at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Arizona on Dec. 22. “If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America in full quickly and without question,” he said. Following Trump’s comments, Google search data shows there’s been a spike in searches of people asking which country — the U.S. or Panama — has authority over the Panama Canal. THE QUESTION Does the U.S. have any authority over the Panama Canal? THE SOURCES Panama Canal Authority The Embassy of Panama U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Historian U.S. Census Bureau The Library of Congress Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino GovInfo , a service of the United States Government Publishing Office that provides free public access to official publications from all three branches of the federal government Jorge Luis Quijano, the Panama Canal administrator from 2014 to 2019, Benjamin Gedan, Ph.D. , director of the Latin America Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. THE ANSWER No, the U.S. does not have any authority over the Panama Canal, but it used to. Sign up for the VERIFY Fast Facts daily Newsletter! WHAT WE FOUND The U.S. does not have any authority over the Panama Canal. The waterway, which was built by the U.S. in the early 1900s, opened in 1914 and remained under U.S. government control until treaties signed in 1977 by President Jimmy Carter set terms for its eventual transfer to Panama. The two countries jointly operated the canal until December 1999, after which Panama assumed full control. On Dec. 22, in response to Trump’s comments, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino posted a video on X declaring that “every square meter of the canal belongs to Panama and will continue to belong” to his country. Without mentioning Trump by name, Mulino addressed the president-elect’s complaints over rising fees for ships crossing the canal, saying they are set by experts who take into account operational costs, and supply and demand factors. “The tariffs are not set on a whim,” Mulino said. He noted that Panama has expanded the canal over the years to increase ship traffic “on its own initiative,” and added that shipping fee increases help pay for improvements. “Panamanians may have different views on many issues, but when it comes to our canal, and our sovereignty, we will all unite under our Panamanian flag,” Mulino said. A little over an hour later, Trump responded to Mulino’s remarks on Truth Social, saying: “We’ll see about that!” He also posted a picture of a U.S. flag planted in the canal zone under the phrase, “Welcome to the United States Canal!” The Panama Canal’s history An effort to establish a canal through Panama began with the French in 1880, but financial troubles made the initiative fail after nearly nine years of little progress, according to the Embassy of Panama in the United States . Malaria, yellow fever and other tropical diseases devastated a workforce that was already struggling with especially dangerous terrain and harsh working conditions in the jungle. These conditions eventually cost more than 20,000 lives by some estimates, the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Historian says on its website . At this time, Panama was a province of Colombia, which refused to ratify a subsequent 1901 treaty licensing U.S. interests to build the Panama Canal. President Theodore Roosevelt responded to Colombia’s refusal by dispatching U.S. warships to Panama’s Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The U.S. also pre-wrote a constitution that would be ready after Panamanian independence, which gave American forces “the right to intervene in any part of Panama, to re-establish public peace and constitutional order.” In part because Colombian troops were unable to traverse harsh jungles, Panama declared an effectively bloodless independence within hours on Nov. 3, 1903. The newly-declared Republic of Panama soon signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903 , which provided the U.S. with a 10-mile wide strip of land for the canal, a one-time $10 million payment to Panama, and an annual annuity of $250,000. The U.S. also agreed to guarantee the independence of Panama, according to the Office of the Historian. After more than a decade of construction, the U.S. finished building the canal on Aug. 15, 1914. Almost immediately, some Panamanians began questioning the validity of U.S. control of the canal, which led to what became known in the country as the “generational struggle” to take it over. The U.S. annulled its right to intervene in Panama in the 1930s. By the 1970s, with its administrative costs sharply increasing, the U.S. government spent years negotiating with Panama to cede control of the waterway. The Carter administration worked with the government of Omar Torrijos, and the two sides eventually decided that their best chance for ratification was to submit two treaties to the U.S. Senate , the “Permanent Neutrality Treaty” and the “Panama Canal Treaty.” The first, which continues in perpetuity, gives the U.S. the right to act to ensure the canal remains open and secure. The second stated that the U.S. would turn over the canal to Panama on Dec. 31, 1999. Both were signed in 1977 and ratified the following year. “At noon on December 31, 1999, Panama took over full operation, administration and maintenance of the Canal, in compliance with the Torrijos-Carter Treaties negotiated with the United States in 1977,” said the Embassy of Panama. “The waterway is now managed by the Panama Canal Authority, an autonomous government entity.” Jorge Luis Quijano, who served as the Panama Canal’s administrator from 2014 to 2019, says the neutrality treaty does give the U.S. the right to act if the canal’s operation is threatened due to military conflict — but not to reassert control. “There’s no clause of any kind in the neutrality agreement that allows for the taking back of the canal,” Quijano told the Associated Press. “Legally, there’s no way, under normal circumstances, to recover territory that was used previously.” Benjamin Gedan, director of the Latin America Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., agrees. “There’s very little wiggle room, absent a second U.S. invasion of Panama, to retake control of the Panama Canal in practical terms,” Gedan said. The now-former coach says he loves the university but believes it's the right time to step away. Larrañaga says "I’ve tried every which way to keep this going.” Larrañaga joins a long line of prominent college basketball coaches who have left their jobs in recent years citing the changes in the game and the challenge of coaching in the name, image and likeness era. Cowboys shutting down CeeDee Lamb with 2 games to go over receiver's shoulder issue FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys are shutting down CeeDee Lamb with two games remaining after their 2023 All-Pro receiver spent the second half of the season dealing with a sprained right shoulder. The team says additional exams revealed enough damage to keep Lamb off the field Sunday at Philadelphia and in the final game at home against Washington. The team says surgery isn't expected to be required. Dallas was eliminated from playoff contention a few hours before last weekend’s 26-24 victory over Tampa Bay. (AP) — If Jimmy Butler wants a trade, the Miami Heat have no plans to make him happy. Heat President Pat Riley — in a rare move — spoke out to address rumors Thursday, saying the team has no plans to trade Butler. It’s a clear sign that, if necessary, the team will be willing to let Butler leave as a free agent and get nothing in return. Riley says in a release distributed by the team "we usually don’t comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches.” Penn State offensive coordinator Kotelnicki's creativity has the Nittany Lions humming in the CFP Penn State's offense is thriving under first-year offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. Haaland penalty failure and Fernandes red card pile on woes for City and United in Premier League Erling Haaland’s failure from the penalty spot and Bruno Fernandes’ latest red card have compounded the woes of Manchester City and Manchester United on another tough day for the two Premier League giants. City dropped more points in its improbably poor run of form by drawing 1-1 at home to Everton. Haaland had a spot kick saved by England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The defending champions have only won one of its last 13 games in all competitions. City is languishing in seventh place while United is 14th after a 2-0 loss at Wolverhampton. Fernandes was sent off in the 47th. First-place Liverpool beat Leicester 3-1 in foggy conditions at Anfield and leads by seven points. Kelce also became the third tight end in NFL history to reach 1,000 receptions, joining Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WKBW) — There's no love lost between Buffalo Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins and the New York Jets. Dawkins has never shied away from his disdain for the Bills division rival and he's using that as motivation again this week. "These are like some of the hardest games of the season against the Jets, Patriots, and Dolphins, no matter when it is, no matter the order it's in, they are the hardest games of our season every single year," Dawkins said. "It's always great competition, the rivalry is great, the intensity is up, and I like to think and live in the aura that we hate each other, and that keeps us going." "I think these division games there's always a bit more flare to it," quarterback Josh Allen said. "They're a physical team, they've got a really good defense." Allen has struggled against the Jets over the last several years and cites failing to protect the ball as a key reason why. That said, Allen was very efficient in their first matchup of the season against New York, completing 19 of 25 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown. With one more win in the final two regular-season games, the Bills will clinch the No. 2 seed in the AFC. It's something they understand is important with the playoffs just around the corner. "I think locking up the No. 2 seed is the No. 1 priority," Allen said. "All that does is guarantee us two home playoff games, but you've got to win the first one to get the second one, so that's all we're caring about is going out there this week and just trying to play good, sound football in our type of brand that we know we can play." "It's a division game, and I know they aren't playing for a spot in the playoffs but we are and we want to go into the playoffs confident," cornerback Taron Johnson said.

A resident of a caravan park in northern Tasmania has won the right to have his case against his eviction heard in the Supreme Court. John Lowe, a retiree in his sixties, had been living at the Beauty Point Tourist Park for two years when he and two others were issued with eviction notices in July. Earlier in the year, after a number of issues arose at the park, Mr Lowe formed a residents' association and began advocating for those living at the park to politicians, the media, and on social media. Beauty Point Tourist Park fronts the Tamar River in northern Tasmania. (Facebook: Beauty Point Tourist Park ) In a letter to the park's other occupants, managing director Joshua Manticas alleged those being evicted had "been actively engaged in a campaign of personal denigration against our directors". But following the attempted eviction, Mr Lowe took the case to the Supreme Court, which on Tuesday issued a temporary injunction against his eviction and the removal of his home from the park while his breach-of-contract case was heard. Park's attempt to change rules in question About 60 people live at the Beauty Point Tourist Park, with some having been there for more than a decade. They own their homes, which the park describes as "removable vans and annexes", but pay fortnightly fees to management. Mr Lowe has told the court his home, which he purchased in 2022 from outgoing occupants, is fixed to the ground. John Lowe formed a residents' association at the park. (ABC News:... MANILA, Philippines — The new polymer banknotes featuring the country’s endangered species were unveiled by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) last week, with designs that did not sit well with many because they no longer bear the portraits of Filipino patriots and former presidents. Now comes the high price tag behind the new peso bills. In a report published on its website on Dec. 2, the Commission on Audit (COA) said the BSP shelled out nearly P6 billion to foreign suppliers to cover the cost of production and materials used for the new plastic bank notes. READ: New peso bills focus on PH fauna; heroes, leaders gone In its annual audit report on the BSP for 2023, particularly in its notes to the financial statements, state auditors said the Monetary Board (MB), chaired by the BSP governor, approved supply contracts during the third and fourth quarters of 2023 for the production and procurement of materials for the new banknotes. The new banknotes are under the BSP’s new generation currency series for the P1,000, P500, P100 and P50 bills, all of which were introduced and received by President Marcos last week. According to the report, the first contract was awarded on July 13, 2023, to De La Rue International Ltd., a British company that produces digital and physical protections for goods, trade and identities. The company got the contract for being the “lowest calculated responsive bidder” who offered its services for 4.497 million euros, or P269.524 million, based on the June 5, 2023, BSP reference rate of 1 euro to P59.934. De La Rue was responsible for the supply and delivery of 150,000 bundles of banknotes in the P50 denomination. The board also approved on Aug. 11, 2023, the contract with Swiss firm Koenig & Bauer Banknote Solutions SA for the new generation currency equipment. The contract was worth 16.196 million euros (P973.643 million) and covered technical and maintenance support, training, supply, and delivery of raw materials, consumables, and wear-and-tear spare parts lasting for 12 months or a year, the COA report added. On Sept. 28, 2023, the MB awarded another contract, this time to German company Giesecke+Devrient Currency Technology GmbH, for the supply and delivery of 200,000 bundles of the new P500 bill. The deal amounted to 11.751 million euros, or P727.475 million. For the P100 bills, the board awarded the contract on Oct. 19, 2023, to Papierfabrik Louisenthal GmbH, another German company, for the supply and delivery of 75,200 reams of the enhanced P100 banknote. For this, the BSP spent 42.4 million euros, or P2.605 billion. The same manufacturer was awarded another contract worth 18.54 million euros (P1.113 billion) on Nov. 16, 2023, for 51,020 reams of the new P50 bill. The last contract, for the P1,000 bills, went to the French company Surys for the supply and delivery of 3,040 rolls of “optically variable device patch,” the reflective foil that serves as a major security feature of the banknotes. This contract was for 4.432 million euros (P269.028 million). In total, the BSP spent at least P5.95 billion for the entire project. While highly praised by President Marcos when launched in Malacañang on Dec. 19, the new banknotes drew criticism for breaking the decades-old tradition of featuring historic Filipino figures. Among the first to protest was the August Twenty-One Movement, the anti-Marcos group created in 1983 after the assassination of opposition leader Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. Subscribe to our daily newsletter By providing an email address. I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy . The image of Ninoy and that if his widow, the late former President Cory Aquino, were among those dropped in the new banknotes. Senate President Chiz Escudero and Sen. Koko Pimentel have also asked the BSP to explain the change.

NASCAR's ongoing legal tussle with 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports has taken a fresh turn as the organization officially responded to newly re-filed motions from the two teams. These motions are part of a broader legal dispute, anchored in accusations of monopolistic practices by NASCAR, especially concerning its charter system. The plaintiffs have escalated their efforts by renewing a Motion for a Preliminary Injunction. The latest move by 23XI Racing, co-owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan and NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin, and Front Row Motorsports came on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, raising eyebrows within NASCAR for its timing. The organization perceives this as a deliberate effort to exploit the lack of working days due to the holiday, thereby limiting NASCAR's response time. Chris Yates, an attorney representing NASCAR, criticized the teams and their attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, for timing that he describes as a "tactical delay." He further stated : "Plantiffs' motion to expedite should be denied. Plaintiffs tactically delayed filing their new motion for a preliminary injunction for over a week, intentionally dropping it on NASCAR and the Court on the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday after first posting about it on social media many hours before filing." Judge Frank D. Whitney, who is overseeing this case, adjusted NASCAR's timeline, extending the deadline from December 6 to December 9, accounting for the holiday-induced constraints. Additionally, following NASCAR's response, the teams have until December 12 to file their reply, after which oral argument dates will be determined by the court. This follows the initial motion's denial in November, the subsequent filing of an appeal by the teams, and NASCAR's removal of a contentious clause from the Open Team Agreement that initially barred teams from pursuing antitrust lawsuits. The root of this legal battle comes from NASCAR's charter system, which both 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports argue have monopolistic elements that stifle competition. They contend that the system grants specific advantages and guarantees to chartered teams—advantages that open teams, which must qualify for each race, do not enjoy. Adding urgency to the situation are pending agreements for additional charters from the now-defunct Stewart-Haas Racing, which the teams need to finalize within tight deadlines. The success of their motion for a preliminary injunction carries significant weight on their ability to close these deals. The implications extend to sponsorship commitments and driver contracts, such as those of 23XI Racing's Tyler Reddick, who can potentially exit his contract if not assured of a chartered entry.NEW YORK (AP) — An early rebound for U.S. stocks petered out by the end of the day, leaving indexes close to flat. The S&P 500 edged down by 0.1% Thursday, coming off one of its worst days of the year after the Federal Reserve said it may deliver fewer cuts to interest rates in 2025 than earlier thought. The Dow Jones Industrial Average inched up by less than 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite slipped 0.1%. Treasury yields were mixed in the bond market following reports showing the U.S. economy may be stronger than expected, but manufacturing may be contracting again. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are stabilizing Thursday following one of their worst days of the year . The S&P 500 rose 0.2% in late trading, a day after tumbling 2.9% when the Federal Reserve said it may deliver fewer cuts to interest rates next year than earlier thought. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 136 points, or 0.3%, with less than an hour remaining in trading, following Wednesday’s drop of more than 1,100 points. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.3%. Wednesday’s drop took some of the enthusiasm out of the market, which critics had already been warning was overly buoyant and would need everything to go correctly for it to justify its high prices. But indexes remain near their records , and the S&P 500 is still on track for one of its best years of the millennium . Traders are now expecting the Federal Reserve to deliver just one or maybe two cuts to interest rates next year, according to data from CME Group. Some are even betting on none. A month ago, the majority saw at least two cuts in 2025 as a safe bet. Wall Street loves lower interest rates because they give the economy a boost and goose prices for investments, but they can also provide fuel for inflation. Darden Restaurants, the company behind Olive Garden and other chains, helped lift the market after leaping 15.1%. It delivered profit for the latest quarter that edged past analysts’ expectations. The operator of LongHorn Steakhouses also gave a forecast for revenue for this fiscal year that topped analysts’. Accenture rose 6.7% after the professional services company likewise topped expectations for profit in the latest quarter. CEO Julie Sweet said it saw growth around the world, and the company raised its forecast for revenue this fiscal year. Amazon shares added 1.8%, even as workers at seven of its facilities went on strike Thursday in the middle of the online retail giant’s busiest time of the year. Amazon says it doesn’t expect an impact on its operations during what the workers’ union calls the largest strike against the company in U.S. history. They helped offset a tumble for Micron Technology, which fell 16.7% despite reporting stronger profit than expected. The computer memory company’s revenue fell short of Wall Street’s forecasts, and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said it expects demand from consumers to remain weaker in the near term. It gave a forecast for revenue in the current quarter that fell well short of what analysts were thinking. Lamb Weston, which makes French fries and other potato products, dropped 22.6% after falling short of analysts’ expectations for profit and revenue in the latest quarter. It also cut its financial targets for the fiscal year, saying demand for frozen potatoes is continuing to soften, particularly outside North America. The company replaced its chief executive. In the bond market, yields were mixed a day after shooting higher on expectations that the Fed would deliver fewer cuts to rates in 2025. Reports on the U.S. economy came in mixed. One showed the overall economy grew at a 3.1% annualized rate during the summer, faster than earlier thought. The economy has remained remarkably resilient even though the Fed held its main interest rate at a two-decade high for a while before beginning to cut them in September. A separate report showed fewer U.S. workers applied for unemployment benefits last week, an indication that the job market also remains solid. But a third report said manufacturing in the mid-Atlantic region is unexpectedly contracting again despite economists’ expectations for growth. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.57% from 4.52% late Wednesday and from less than 4.20% earlier this month. But the two-year yield, which more closely tracks expectations for action by the Fed in the near term, eased back to 4.31% from 4.35%. The rise in longer-term yields has put pressure on the housing market by keeping mortgage rates higher. Homebuilder Lennar fell 4.8% after it reported weaker profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected. CEO Stuart Miller said that “the housing market that appeared to be improving as the Fed cut short-term interest rates, proved to be far more challenging as mortgage rates rose” through the quarter. “Even while demand remained strong, and the chronic supply shortage continued to drive the market, our results were driven by affordability limitations from higher interest rates,” he said. A report on Thursday may have offered some encouragement for the housing industry. It showed a pickup in sales of previously occupied homes. In stock markets abroad, London’s FTSE 100 fell 1.1% after the Bank of England paused its cuts to rates and kept its main interest rate unchanged on Thursday. The move comes as inflation there moved further above the central bank’s 2% target rate, while the British economy is flatlining at best. The Bank of Japan also kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged, and Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.7%. Indexes likewise sank across much of the rest of Asia and Europe. ___ AP Business Writers Matt Ott and Elaine Kurtenbach contributed. Stan Choe, The Associated Press

The home of Patrick Mahomes was robbed the day prior, according to police documents. Other athletes have also been victimized by what police now believe to be a sophisticated crime unit. The NFL issued a stark warning to its athletes, advising that they stay off social media and avoid declaring their play and travel schedules on public social media platforms. They believe the alleged robbers are targeting their homes while they are at games, according to ABC News. Thom Tillis begins 2026 reelection with tough fight ahead in North Carolina

Nordstrom Rack Cyber Monday deals: Snag up to 75% off these gift-worthy brandsFormer Boise State coach Chris Petersen still gets asked about the Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma on the first day of 2007. That game had everything. Underdog Boise State took a 28-10 lead over one of college football's blue bloods that was followed by a 25-point Sooners run capped by what could have been a back-breaking interception return for a touchdown with 1:02 left. Then the Broncos used three trick plays that remain sensations to not only force overtime but win 43-42. And then there was the marriage proposal by Boise State running back Ian Johnson — shortly after scoring the winning two-point play — to cheerleader Chrissy Popadics that was accepted on national TV. That game put Broncos football on the national map for most fans, but looking back 18 years later, Petersen sees it differently. “Everybody wants to talk about that Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl game, which is great how it all worked out and all those things,” Petersen said. “But we go back to play TCU (three years later) again on the big stage. It's not as flashy a game, but to me, that was an even better win.” Going back to the Fiesta Bowl and winning, Petersen reasoned, showed the Broncos weren't a splash soon to fade away, that there was something longer lasting and more substantive happening on the famed blue turf. The winning has continued with few interruptions. No. 8 and third-seeded Boise State is preparing for another trip to the Fiesta Bowl, this time in a playoff quarterfinal against No. 5 and sixth-seeded Penn State on New Year's Eve. That success has continued through a series of coaches, though with a lot more of a common thread than readily apparent. Dirk Koetter was hired from Oregon, where Petersen was the wide receivers coach. Not only did Koetter bring Petersen with him from Oregon, Petersen introduced him to Dan Hawkins, who also was hired for the staff. So the transition from Koetter to Hawkins to Petersen ensured at least some level of consistency. Koetter and Hawkins engineered double-digit victory seasons five times over a six-year span that led to power-conference jobs. Koetter went to Arizona State after three seasons and Hawkins to Colorado after five. Then when Petersen became the coach after the 2005 season, he led Boise State to double-digit wins his first seven seasons and made bowls all eight years. He resisted the temptation to leave for a power-conference program until Washington lured him away toward the end of the 2013 season. Then former Boise State quarterback and offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin took over and posted five double-digit victory seasons over his first six years. After going 5-2 during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, he left for Auburn. “They just needed consistency of leadership,” said Koetter, who is back as Boise State's offensive coordinator. “This program had always won at the junior-college level, the Division II level, the I-AA (now FCS) level.” But Koetter referred to “an unfortunate chain of events” that made Boise State a reclamation project when he took over in 1998. Coach Pokey Allen led Boise State to the Division I-AA national championship game in 1994, but was diagnosed with cancer two days later. He died on Dec. 30, 1996, at 53. Allen coached the final two games that season, Boise State's first in Division I-A (now FBS). Houston Nutt became the coach in 1997, went 4-7 and headed to Arkansas. Then Koetter took over. “One coach dies and the other wasn't the right fit for this program,” Koetter said. “Was a really good coach, did a lot of good things, but just wasn't a good fit for here.” But because of Boise State's success at the lower levels, Koetter said the program was set up for success. “As Boise State has risen up the conference food chain, they’ve pretty much always been at the top from a player talent standpoint,” Koetter said. “So it was fairly clear if we got things headed in the right direction and did a good job recruiting, we would be able to win within our conference for sure.” Success didn't take long. He went 6-5 in 1998 and then won 10 games each of the following two seasons. Hawkins built on that winning and Petersen took it to another level. But there is one season, really one game, no really one half that still bugs Petersen. He thought his best team was in 2010, one that entered that late-November game at Nevada ranked No. 3 and had a legitimate chance to play for the national championship. The Colin Kaepernick-led Wolf Pack won 34-31. “I think the best team that I might've been a part of as the head coach was the team that lost one game to Nevada,” Petersen said. "That team, to me, played one poor half of football on offense the entire season. We were winning by a bunch at half (24-7) and we came out and did nothing on offense in the second half and still had a chance to win. “That team would've done some damage.” There aren't any what-ifs with this season's Boise State team. The Broncos are in the field of the first 12-team playoff, representing the Group of Five as its highest-ranked conference champion. That got Boise State a bye into the quarterfinals. Spencer Danielson has restored the championship-level play after taking over as the interim coach late last season during a rare downturn that led to Andy Avalos' dismissal . Danielson received the job full time after leading Boise State to the Mountain West championship . Now the Broncos are 12-1 with their only defeat to top-ranked and No. 1 seed Oregon on a last-second field goal . Running back Ashton Jeanty also was the runner-up to the Heisman Trophy . “Boise State has been built on the backs of years and years of success way before I got here,” Danielson said. "So even this season is not because of me. It’s because the group of young men wanted to leave a legacy, be different. We haven’t been to the Fiesta Bowl in a decade. They said in January, ‘We’re going to get that done.’ They went to work.” As was the case with Danielson, Petersen and Koetter said attracting top talent is the primary reason Boise State has succeeded all these years. Winning, obviously, is the driving force, and with more entry points to the playoffs, the Broncos could make opportunities to keep returning to the postseason a selling point. But there's also something about the blue carpet. Petersen said he didn't get what it was about when he arrived as an assistant coach, and there was some talk about replacing it with more conventional green grass. A poll in the Idaho Statesman was completely against that idea, and Petersen has come to appreciate what that field means to the program. “It's a cumulative period of time where young kids see big-time games when they're in seventh and eighth and ninth and 10th grade and go, ‘Oh, I know that blue turf. I want to go there,’” Petersen said. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and a Hamas military leader, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The announcement came as health officials in the Gaza Strip said the death toll from the 13-month-old war between Israel and Hamas has surpassed 44,000. The warrant marked the first time that a sitting leader of a major Western ally has been accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity by a global court of justice. The ICC panel said there were reasonable grounds to believe that both Netanyahu and his ex-defense minister bear responsibility for the war crime of starvation and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution and other inhumane acts. Israel’s war has caused heavy destruction across Gaza, decimated parts of the territory and driven almost the entire population of 2.3 million people from their homes, leaving most dependent on aid to survive. Israel launched its war in Gaza after Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting another 250 . Around 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third of whom are believed to be dead. Here’s the Latest: BEIRUT — Israeli strikes killed at least 51 people on Thursday in towns and villages across Lebanon, according to the country's Health Ministry. In eastern Lebanon, intensified Israeli airstrikes killed 40 people in 10 different towns in Baalbek province, the ministry said. Rescuers were searching under the rubble of destroyed buildings, said Gov. Bachir Khodr, calling it “a very violent day” in his province. In southern Lebanon, five people were killed by an Israeli strike in Tyre province, and seven others were killed by a strike in Nabatiyeh province, the Health Ministry said. As of Thursday, the Health Ministry has recorded at least 3,583 people killed and 15,244 wounded in Lebanon during the 13-month war between Hezbollah and Israel, with the majority of casualties taking place after Israel’s escalation and ground offensive in late September. UNITED NATIONS -- The U.N. humanitarian chief for Gaza is warning that the delivery of critical food, water, fuel and medical supplies is grinding to a halt throughout the territory and “the survival of two million people hangs in the balance.” Muhannad Hadi said in a statement Thursday that Israeli authorities have been banning commercial imports for more than six weeks and at the same time thefts from humanitarian convoys by armed individuals have surged. “In 2024, U.N. trucks have been looted 75 times –- including 15 such attacks since Nov. 4 alone –- and armed people have broken into U.N. facilities on 34 occasions,” he said. Last week, one driver was shot in the head and hospitalized along with another truck driver, Hadi said. And on Saturday 98 trucks were looted in a single attack which saw the vehicles damaged or stolen. The Gaza humanitarian coordinator said bakeries are closing because of lack of flour or fuel to operate generators. “Palestinian civilians are struggling to survive under unlivable conditions, amid relentless hostilities,” Hadi said. He demanded the immediate improvement of security and conditions throughout Gaza to allow the safe and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid “through lawful means.” Israel says it puts no limit on the supplies permitted into Gaza, and it blames the U.N. distribution system. But Israel’s official figures show the amount of aid it has let in has plunged since the beginning of October. The U.N has blamed Israeli military restrictions, along with widespread lawlessness that has led to theft of aid shipments. WASHINGTON — The White House fundamentally rejects the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday. She said the Biden administration was “deeply concerned by the prosecutor’s rush to seek arrest warrants and the troubling process errors that led to this decision.” The Biden administration has increased its warnings and appeals to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to do more to spare civilians in airstrikes and other attacks, and to allow more aid to reach Gaza. However, a 30-day Biden administration deadline came and went earlier this month for Israel to meet specific U.S. targets to improve its treatment of Palestinian civilians in Gaza trapped in the war. U.S. demands included that Israel lift a near-total ban on delivery of aid to hard-hit north Gaza for starving civilians there. KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip — The three children were playing outside a cluster of tents housing displaced people in the Gaza Strip when an Israeli airstrike killed them, along with six other people. It’s become a grim, near-daily ritual more than 13 months into the Israel-Hamas war, which local health authorities said Thursday has killed over 44,000 Palestinians. Israel carries out frequent strikes against what it says are militants hiding in civilian areas, and women and children are nearly always among the dead. Wednesday’s strike killed Hamza al-Qadi, 7, his brother Abdulaziz, 5, and their sister Laila, 4, in a tent camp in the southern city of Khan Younis. Areej al-Qadi, their mother, says they were playing outside when they were killed. “All that’s left of them are their notebooks, their books and a blood-stained jacket,” she said as she broke into tears. “They were children who did nothing.” The Israeli military did not respond to a request for comment on the strike. Gaza’s Health Ministry said Thursday that 44,056 Palestinians have been killed and 104,268 wounded since the start of the war, which was ignited by Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack into Israel. Palestinian militants killed some 1,200 people that day, mostly civilians, and abducted around 250 people. The Health Ministry does not say how many of those killed in Gaza were fighters but says women and children make up more than half the fatalities. Israel, which rarely comments on individual strikes, says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. Hours after the ministry announced the latest toll, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and a Hamas military leader. Mahmoud bin Hassan, the children’s father, said he buried them on Thursday. He asked when the international community would take action to stop the war. “When the entire Palestinian population has been killed?” he said. NEW YORK — Human Rights Watch applauded the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants issued Thursday against both Israeli and Hamas officials. The warrants “break through the perception that certain individuals are beyond the reach of the law,” the associate international justice director at Human Rights Watch, Balkees Jarrah, said in a statement. The New York-based rights group earlier this month released a report saying Israel has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip, including massive forced displacements that amount to ethnic cleansing. JERUSALEM — Israeli prosecutors have charged a former aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with leaking classified documents to international media, apparently to protect the Israeli leader from criticism as a hostage deal was collapsing. Eli Feldstein, a former media adviser to Netanyahu, was charged Thursday with leaking classified information with the intent of harming state security and obstruction of justice. The leaked documents are said to have formed the basis of a widely discredited article in the London-based Jewish Chronicle — which was later withdrawn — suggesting Hamas planned to spirit hostages out of Gaza through Egypt, and an article in Germany’s Bild newspaper that said Hamas was drawing out the hostage talks as a form of psychological warfare on Israel. Critics say the leaks were aimed at giving Netanyahu political cover as the case-fire talks ground to a halt. Some have accused Netanyahu of resisting a deal in to preserve his governing coalition, which includes hard-line members who have threatened to bring down the government if he makes concessions to Hamas. The leaks came at a time of public uproar over the deaths of six hostages who were killed by their Hamas captors as Israeli soldiers were closing in. The indictment said the leaks were meant “to create media influence on the public discourse in Israel in regards to the handling of the hostage situation, after the news of the murder of six hostages.” The indictment identified two other Netanyahu aides as being connected to the scheme, but only Feldstein and an unidentified reservist in Israeli military intelligence were charged. Netanyahu, who denies the accusations, has not been identified as a suspect in the burgeoning investigation. Israeli media say if convicted, Feldstein could potentially face life in prison. JERUSALEM -- The Israeli military has launched an investigation into the death of a 70-year-old Israeli man who entered Lebanon with Israeli forces and was killed in a Hezbollah ambush. Investigators are trying to determine, among other things, who allowed Zeev Erlich into the combat zone with the forces and why he was permitted to enter. According to Israeli media reports, Erlich was not on active duty when he was shot, but was wearing a military uniform and had a weapon. The army said he was a reservist with the rank of major and identified him as a “fallen soldier” when it announced his death. Erlich was a well-known West Bank settler and researcher of Jewish history. Media reports said Erlich was permitted to enter Lebanon to explore a local archaeological site. The army said a 20-year-old soldier was killed in the same incident, while an officer was badly wounded. The army announced Thursday that the chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, has appointed a team of experts “to examine and strengthen operational discipline and military culture” following the incident. It said its commander for northern Israel, Maj. Gen. Ori Gordin, would launch a separate “command inquiry,” while Israeli military police conduct a separate probe. Such investigations can lead to criminal charges. BEIRUT — At least 29 people were killed Thursday in Israeli strikes on different towns and villages across Lebanon, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry and state-run media. In eastern Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes killed 26 people in six different towns in Baalbek province, the health ministry and the National News Agency said. In Tyre province, southern Lebanon, three people were killed in an Israeli strike, the health ministry said. The health ministry Wednesday said that over 3,550 people have been killed in the 13-month war between Hezbollah and Israel, the majority following Israel’s escalation in late September. The European Union's foreign policy chief has underlined that the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas officials are a legal and not political matter, and that they are binding on all 27 EU member countries and other signatories to the ICC to implement. “The tragedy in Gaza has to stop," Josep Borrell told reporters during a visit to Jordan. “It is not a political decision. It is the decision of an international court of justice, and the decision of the court has to be respected, and implemented.” “This decision is a binding decision on all state parties of the court, which include all members of the European Union," he added. ANKARA — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling partyhas welcomed the decision by the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamn Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, calling it a judgement made for the sake of “humanity.” Omer Celik, spokesman for the Erdogan’s party, said on the social media platform X that Netanyahu and Gallant would “eventually be held accountable for genocide.” Celik also criticised Israeli officials who described the ICC decision as antisemitic. Turkey is among the most vocal critics of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and has submitted a formal request to join a genocide case that South Africa has filed against Israel at the U.N.’s International Court of Justice. Dutch foreign minister Caspar Veldkamp, whose country hosts the International Criminal Court, has confirmed The Netherlands would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he arrived on Dutch soil. “The line from the government is clear. We are obliged to cooperate with the ICC ... we abide 100% by the Rome Statute,” he said in response to a question in parliament Thursday. Other European officials were more cautious. In France, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said he supported the International Criminal Court's prosecutor but declined to comment when asked more specifically if France would arrest Netanyahu if he were to step on French soil. “Today, combating impunity is our priority. We ratified the ICC Statute in 2000 and have consistently supported the court’s actions. Our response will align with these principles,” Christophe Lemoine told reporters at a press conference. Lemoine added that the warrants were “a complex legal issue ... It’s a situation that requires a lot of legal precautions.” In Italy, the foreign and justice ministries didn’t immediately respond to emails seeking comment about whether Italy, an ICC member which hosted the Rome conference that gave birth to the court, would honor the arrest warrant. Premier Giorgia Meloni hosted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in March 2023 and has strongly supported Israel since Oct. 7, while providing humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza. JERUSALEM — Israel’s mostly ceremonial president, Isaac Herzog, has called the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “a dark day for justice. A dark day for humanity.” In a post on X, he said the international court “has chosen the side of terror and evil over democracy and freedom, and turned the very system of justice into a human shield for Hamas’ crimes against humanity." Israel Katz, Israel’s new defense minister, said the decision was “a moral disgrace, entirely tainted by antisemitism, and drags the international judicial system to an unprecedented low.” He said it “serves Iran, the head of the snake, and its proxies.” Benny Gantz, a retired general and political rival to Netanyahu, also condemned the decision, saying it showed “moral blindness” and was a “shameful stain of historic proportion that will never be forgotten.” Hamas has welcomed the decision by the International Criminal Court to issue warrants against Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant, calling it an “important and historic precedent” after what it said was decades of injustice at the hands of a “fascist occupation.” The statement did not refer to the warrants issued for the militant group’s own leaders. Hamas called on all nations to “cooperate with the court in bringing the Zionist war criminals, Netanyahu and Gallant, to justice, and to work immediately to stop the crimes of genocide against innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip.” DEIR AL-BALAH, The Gaza Strip — Bakeries have reopened in the central Gaza Strip after being closed for several days because of flour shortages. The shortages appear to have been linked to the looting of nearly 100 truckloads of aid by armed men in southern Gaza last weekend. Associated Press footage showed a crowd of hundreds pushing and shouting outside a bakery in the central city of Deir al-Balah on Thursday. The day before the reopening, the price of a bag of 15 loaves of pita bread had climbed above $13. “In my house, there is not a morsel of bread, and the children are hungry,” said Sultan Abu Sultan, who was displaced from northern Gaza during the war. The amount of aid entering Gaza plunged in October as Israel launched a major offensive in the isolated north, where experts say famine may be underway . Hunger is widespread across the territory, even in central Gaza where aid groups have more access. Humanitarian organizations say Israeli restrictions, ongoing fighting and the breakdown of law and order make it difficult to deliver assistance. Israel’s offensive, launched after Hamas’ October 2023 attack, has displaced around 90% of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million people. Hundreds of thousands are crammed into tent camps with little in the way of public services and are reliant on international food aid. NICOSIA — The president of Cyprus says the European Union must play a bigger role in the Middle East as it can no longer stand by as an observer. President Nikos Christodoulides said the 27-member bloc needs to establish closer ties with countries that bolster regional stability like Egypt, Jordan and the Gulf states. “The conflict in the Middle East is taking place on the EU’s doorstep, in an area of vital interest to the bloc’s interests, where any escalation or regional spillover will have significant consequences on its security and stability,” Christodoulides told an Economist conference in the Cypriot capital. Christodoulides said EU member Cyprus for years has tried to get this message across to Brussels. The island nation earlier this year was the staging ground for a maritime corridor delivering some 20,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza. The EU is wracked by members’ divisions over how peace should come about in the Middle East THE HAGUE — The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and Hamas officials, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity over the war in Gaza and the October 2023 attacks that triggered Israel’s offensive in the Palestinian territory. The decision turns Netanyahu and the others into internationally wanted suspects and is likely to further isolate them and complicate efforts to negotiate a cease-fire to end the 13-month conflict. But its practical implications could be limited since Israel and its major ally, the United States, are not members of the court and several of the Hamas officials have been subsequently killed in the conflict. Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders have previously condemned ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan’s request for the warrants as disgraceful and antisemitic. U.S. President Joe Biden also blasted the prosecutor and expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas. Hamas also slammed the request. The death toll in the Gaza Strip from the 13-month-old war between Israel and Hamas has surpassed 44,000, local health officials said Thursday. The Gaza Health Ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count, but it has said that more than half of the fatalities are women and children. The Israeli military says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. The Health Ministry said 44,056 people have been killed and 104,268 wounded since the start of the war. It has said the real toll is higher because thousands of bodies are buried under rubble or in areas that medics cannot access. The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting another 250 . Around 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third of whom are believed to be dead. Most of the rest were released during a cease-fire last year. Around 90% of Gaza's population of 2.3 million people have been displaced, often multiple times, and hundreds of thousands are living in squalid tent camps with little food, water or basic services. Israel says it tries to avoid harming civilians and blames their deaths on Hamas because the militants operate in residential areas, where they have built tunnels, rocket launchers and other military infrastructure. JERUSALEM — A rocket fired from Lebanon killed a man and wounded two others in northern Israel on Thursday, according to the Magen David Adom rescue service. The service said paramedics found the body of the man in his 30s near a playground in the town of Nahariya, near the border with Lebanon, after a rocket attack on Thursday. Israel meanwhile struck targets in southern Lebanon and several buildings south of Beirut, the Lebanese capital, after warning people to evacuate.Up to 70 parents and businesses have now made allegations that they have lost money to former international footballer Natasha Harding. It is understood the total figure lost could be almost £70,000. The former Reading captain, who is one of Wales' most capped players and now uses her married name of Allen-Wyatt, is facing a number of claims, including that she took money for one-to-one coaching with children that she did not deliver. Ms Allen-Wyatt said she had to cancel "some sessions" due to circumstances outside her control, and apologised to those affected. Since the first allegations emerged, parents and businesses from south Wales, north Wales, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire have told BBC Wales about their own experiences with Ms Allen-Wyatt, in fresh claims amounting to £27,000. Meanwhile, a parent who set up a WhatsApp group for those affected said their claims totalled around £40,000. Reports have been made to a number of police forces in Wales and England, some of which have been passed on to Action Fraud, which co-ordinates fraud complaints from all regions. Action Fraud said at least one report "is currently being assessed" by the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau. Former teammates have also revealed to the BBC that some of Ms Allen-Wyatt's actions "also impacted ourselves, our families and friends". Ms Allen-Wyatt's former club, Manchester City, has been urged to cut its ties with her as a pundit and commentator. Andy Hughes, a voluntary coach for Northop Hall Girls' under-12s and under-13s in Flintshire, said Ms Allen-Wyatt had offered one-to-one coaching to team members after appearing as a guest on his podcast, This Girl Can Play, and mentioning she wanted to expand her academy to north Wales. She subsequently signed up 12 players for 10 sessions of coaching, at a cost of £280 per player. But only two blocks of coaching sessions were delivered, with subsequent sessions cancelled or postponed after Ms Allen-Wyatt told Mr Hughes that she had suffered two family bereavements. No further sessions were arranged, and Mr Hughes said no refunds had been given. He said, "I was really, really disappointed. For someone who played the game at that level and who’s an icon to the next generation of women footballers, these sessions were really important. "How do you explain to an 11-year-old girl that their Welsh hero isn’t going to come and coach them after all, and that they’ve let them down? "I'm gutted that someone we put forward as a great opportunity has turned out like this. It's a shame because the coaching she did deliver was good." Daniel Rees, who runs Cardiff Classic Shirts, agreed to sponsor Ms Allen-Wyatt after she contacted him through social media. He gave her £500, for which he was promised the company would be advertised on her academy training shirts, hoodies and jackets for a period of two years. Mr Rees said he had seen no evidence of this being done and not received any explanation despite trying to contact her. "I couldn't find any pictures of shirts that were meant to be printed up, just a mock-up I was sent," he said. "I never thought the worst, I just thought she was having a run of bad luck and it would come good. "To see now that it's so widespread has come as a bit of a shock to the system." Mr Rees said he was also promised two worn Wales match shirts, which never materialised. Kate Parker, a keen Wales football fan, purchased coaching sessions as a Christmas gift for her niece after seeing the Tash Harding Academy on social media. Ms Parker, who runs two pubs in the Caerphilly area, paid further amounts for sponsorship through the academy and kit for her niece, with the total coming to £1,335. However, only one training session was delivered, a second one cancelled, and eventually Ms Parker asked for a full refund. Just £350 has been returned to her, in three instalments, with £885 remaining outstanding. "She'd promised my niece a Wales shirt as well... it's a big thing when you're a kid," said Ms Parker. "My niece is quite shy, I've been to a couple of her football matches and she doesn't get involved as much as the others. "She was quite upset but my sister sat her down and explained that (the coaching) couldn't happen, and that's that." BBC Wales approached Ms Allen-Wyatt or comment about these latest claims but received no response. As the year draws to a close, investors are looking for one last chance to make a winning play in 2024 . Bluebell Securities predicts robust growth for US and Asian stocks next year, with Thailand's bond market shining bright as less aggressive rate cuts compared with other countries are expected to attract steady foreign capital inflows. Chief executive Narisara Chaiwathana said the Thai bond market will remain attractive for investment next year, as the Bank of Thailand is expected to trim its policy rate in the first quarter. Such a move would increase demand for bonds as investors seek to lock in high interest rate returns before rates fall in the next phase, said Ms Narisara. As a consequence, investment in long-term, high-quality bonds is likely to receive more interest from investors, she said. "The stance of the Thai Monetary Policy Committee, which is relatively dovish compared with central banks in major economies, has attracted foreign capital inflows to the Thai bond market since the second half of this year, and should continue to surge in 2025," said Ms Narisara. Bluebell recommends investments in three- to five-year bonds for investors to lock in returns from interest rates in the long term. As the rate decreases, bond prices would increase, allowing investors to sell for profit in the future, she said. For investments in equity, Bluebell suggests US and Asian equity funds, which are expected to provide good returns in 2025, backed by supportive macroeconomic factors. Investors should allocate their investments to assets that suit the risk level they can accept, according to the securities firm. According to Ms Narisara, the main supporting factor for investment in mutual funds, whether equity funds, bonds or other assets, is the likelihood of major central banks to cut rates, led by the US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank. The lower rates will help to reduce the financial costs of listed companies, increasing their profits amid a more stable economic recovery. The US stock market could expand next year based on the growth of listed companies' profits and strong artificial intelligence trends, even though the US economy has slowed slightly, she said. Ms Narisara said many Asian countries still have strong economic fundamentals and are worth watching, such as India, South Korea and Vietnam. China, despite pressure from expected US tariff hikes, is likely to start recovering as a result of the monetary and fiscal stimulus implemented by the Chinese central bank and government, she said. Bluebell expects to report total income of 250 million baht, representing a growth rate of 95.5% from 2023, from operating as an intermediary in distributing quality bonds, mutual funds and other financial products. The company has risen to fifth place among securities companies for bond sales volume, according to the Thai Bond Market Association, and is likely to maintain this ranking until the end of the year. Bluebell aims for 13.5 billion baht in bond sales this year and 15 billion in 2025, with the company distributing bonds to 5-7 bond issuers on average each month. In the first 10 months of 2024, the company's assets under administration (AUA) amounted to 7 billion baht in terms of mutual funds, up 32% year-on-year. The figure is expected to increase by 50% for the whole year. In 2025, AUA is projected to reach 15 billion baht.If you’re still trying to understand what each Uefa Champions League result means within the context of this new format, join the club. The difference between finishing first and 24th is playing two extra matches. How many points is a team likely to need to finish inside the top 24? (I can’t believe I’m asking this!) Anyway, while we try to figure that out, here’s a look at what happened in the world of sport while you were sleeping. If Liverpool can sweep aside Real Madrid with ease and will strongly fancy their chances at the weekend against a Manchester City who, at their best, generally lose at Anfield, never mind in their present disastrous form, what’s left for them to fear? Two Champions League final defeats as well as elimination in the knockout rounds to Los Blancos in four of the last seven seasons, but under Arne Slot, Liverpool breezed past the reigning champions. Second-half goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo sealed a 2-0 win which could have been more as Mohamed Salah missed a penalty. Having said that, things went from bad to worse for Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe who also failed to score from the spot as Liverpool’s stand-in goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher made the save.

The NSW government will "throw everything" behind an investigation into an antisemitic incident overnight as Australia's peak Jewish body urges the prime minister to ramp up efforts to tackle what it says is a crisis. Emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle on fire in Woollahra in Sydney's east at around 1am on Wednesday, with Fire and Rescue NSW extinguishing the blaze. That vehicle and another, as well as two buildings and a footpath, were graffitied. The graffiti on one of the buildings said 'Kill Israiel' (sic). It's the second attack in the same suburb within weeks. 10/12/2024 04:22 Play 'Attempts to divide our city' Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns were among those who condemned the attack, labelling it an antisemitic incident. Minns said attempts to divide Sydney "won't work" and the offenders would face "the full force of the law". He said it was "a violent act of destruction, clearly antisemitic, designed to strike fear into the community that lives in this part of Sydney". Police are searching for two people believed to have been in the area at the time. The perpetrators are believed to be two people of slim build, aged between 15 and 20 years, wearing face coverings and dark clothing. Source: AAP / Mick Tsikas Albanese wrote on social media that there was "no place for antisemitism in our community". He told ABC radio the vandalism was "an attack on people because they happen to be Jewish", calling it a "hate crime". The incident has been escalated to the Australian Federal Police, who Albanese announced had established an antisemitism taskforce earlier this week. NSW police commissioner Karen Webb said a "full police response is underway" and that police are conducting an "extensive investigation". Earlier, NSW Police and Counter-Terrorism Minister Yasmin Catley pledged the state government would "throw everything we can" behind the investigation. "We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, acts of hatred and violence directed at our Jewish community," Catley said in a statement. "There is no place for hatred or antisemitism in our society. Every person has the right to feel safe in their own city, their homes, and their places of worship." Source: AAP / Mick Tsikas 'Antisemitism crisis' The incident comes after the Adass Israel Synagogue at Ripponlea in Melbourne's south-east was set alight in a pre-dawn attack on Friday while a number of people were inside. Police are treating it as a "likely" act of terrorism. Speaking outside the synagogue on Wednesday, Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin said the vandalism in Woollahra was designed to terrorise Jewish Australians. "The Jewish community again wakes to scenes of terror and devastation," he said. "How long will this continue, and with what horrors will it end?" Source: AAP / Joel Carrett Ryvchin said after the attack on the synagogue, his organisation has "appealed to the prime minister with urgent requests" to address what he called an antisemitism crisis. Albanese visited the synagogue on Tuesday, where he promised to support its rebuild but was jeered by some angry with his handling of the situation . He committed his government to provide support to rebuild the synagogue, will provide funding for the restoration of the salvageable scrolls, and the replacement of those that are beyond repair. The Victorian government announced 15 community organisations would receive $950,000 in security funding. Grants of up to $200,000 were available to Jewish community organisations to support the purchase, installation or improvement of security equipment at community facilities. 'Harmful': Liberal senator's 'fictitious Islamophobia' claim condemned Islamic school bus torched Meanwhile, a bus belonging to an Islamic school in Adelaide was set alight in suspicious circumstances over the weekend. Independent senator Fatima Payman has questioned whether there was a double standard over incidents of antisemitism and Islamophobia, saying the government had rightly condemned the synagogue attack, "yet there is no outrage" over the bus being torched. "Two acts of arson, two acts of hate, but two very different responses," she said in a social media video on Tuesday. Police in South Australia are investigating but say no evidence has been found to indicate it was racially motivated. — With additional reporting by the Australian Associated Press.

Meta, you've finally gone and done it: you've made me put on my Meta Quest 3 more than once a week — and I can't seem to put it down. This comes from someone who was fully committed to making the most of the Meta Quest 2 , but realized it ended up collecting dust instead. And I fully believe I wasn't the only one this happened to. Despite this, Meta's Quest 3 headset pulled me in (after trading in my Quest 2 to get a neat discount). Honestly, I wasn't expecting much; I was still keen on better visuals, access to more upscaled games and apps, and a chance to try mixed-reality features with its impressive full-color passthrough. What I got instead, however, was some of the best VR experiences I've had to date. Kicking off with the behemoth that is Asgard's Wrath 2 , an action RPG with over 60 hours of amazing gameplay, then stepping into the visual delight that is Red Matter 2 and having a blast popping some zombie heads in Arizona Sunshine 2 (I realize that sequels may be the secret sauce here). That was barely even this year, and it only got better as 2024 hit its stride. Not only has the arrival of the fantastic Meta Quest 3S made VR more accessible to the masses, but the amount of updates Meta has given has changed the way I view and use VR headsets. As yes, I even use my Quest 3 to watch movies while I cook. I've always had a fiery passion for VR, with the hopes that VR gaming would finally kick off. This year, Meta Quest proved that it can deliver on these expectations, and there's even more to come down the line. VR gaming at its finest Remember when Meta announced GTA San Andreas VR? Well, that's been delayed indefinitely . In truth, I wasn't massively excited about this road the tech giant was going down. Sure, Resident Evil 4 VR on Quest was done masterfully, but were we just going to get VR remakes of the classics for the foreseeable future? Thankfully, that is now far from the case. In 2024, we got several well-recognized IPs make their VR debut, and these were all-new, standalone titles. I'm talking about Vampire: The Masquerade - Justice, Assassin's Creed Nexus VR and recently, Metro Awakening. These weren't just gimmicky instalments in each franchise. They were fleshed-out, unique VR experiences that added to their respective worlds. Were they a tad janky? Sure, but that's part of the fun with VR gaming, and it's refreshing to play familiar games in an all-new format. Then, of course, the Meta-exclusive Batman: Arkham Shadow came along and blew me away. From the immersive story and thrilling like-to-like combat to the haunting atmosphere, this is a full-fledged Arkhamverse game picked straight from the original titles. It's not as if the aforementioned titles didn't do this either, but developers Camouflaj (the team behind Iron Man VR) did something special. Best said by Tom's Guide's own entertainment editor, Rory Mellon: "Batman: Arkham Shadow doesn’t shrink down, or strip away key elements, of the traditional Arkham experience, it’s all here." That says a lot about how far Meta Quest has come, and I agree that Batman on Quest 3 delivered a knockout blow to PSVR 2 . The good news is the highbrow IPs don't stop there. Alien: Rogue Incursion is set to arrive on Meta Quest headsets in February 2025, and while it may be on other VR platforms first, I'm all for playing a VR action-horror game without being tethered to a PC or console. I haven't even taken into account all the other VR games made for Meta Quest that aren't attached to existing franchises, including the ones that take advantage of the pure fun of virtual reality, such as Pistol Whip, Walkabout Mini Golf, Waltz of the Wizard and, my personal favorite, Smash Drums. With the launch of the Meta Quest 3, the VR headset has seen a new wave of top-notch experiences, and that's just in VR gaming. Broadening Meta Quest VR's horizon To be clear, this isn't about Meta Horizon Worlds — a virtual sandbox that is a tad underwhelming. What really makes the Quest 3 and 3S shine is its full-color passthrough, which allowed me to expand how I use the headset. You may have seen many of Meta's advertisements showcasing people using it while waiting in line , building furniture or on a flight. I thought it was a load of boloney, so I tried one of these many instances out myself. After putting on the headset, leaving the controllers behind thanks to hand tracking and turning on a movie via the Amazon Prime Video app, I was ready to cook up a storm in my kitchen through the lens of my Meta Quest 3. Wouldn't you know it? It was a splendid experience that I continue to do to this day. From the way hand tracking seamlessly lets me control what's happening on display to watching a whole movie while I chopped some onions, it was a new way of going about my usual routines. Granted, the Quest 3's battery life only lasts around two hours before needing a charge, so these experiences aren't long-lived. Still, it shows how Meta Quest headsets can be used beyond gaming. While I have yet to take out my headset in public, Tom's Guide's Jason England tested the Quest 3's Travel mode on a 15-hour flight , and unfortunately for Apple, it put the Vison Pro to shame. Thanks to continued updates from Meta, there are now more ways to fully utilize Meta's headsets in different ways. For instance, Quest 3 and 3S headsets can now connect to a Windows 11 PC , with Microsoft's Mixed Reality Link app allowing up to three virtual displays so you can work, watch and play away on your PC through a virtual reality lens. Plenty more on its way It may have slipped under the radar, but it's clear Meta has steered VR headsets down the right path over the past year. After putting on my Quest 3 time after time, whether it be for VR gaming, watching shows as I do everyday tasks or checking out random events like seeing Sabrina Carpenter: A VR Concert (why not?), I'm glad to see Meta pull away from other ventures, like its unfortunate Meta Quest Pro . I'm excited to see what's ahead, and it's already looking up. In case you missed it, James Cameron is partnering up with Meta to bring his Lightstorm Vision to the headset. That's the same tech behind "Avatar," and we'll soon be seeing exclusive mixed-reality content around live sports and concerts, feature films and TV series featuring big-name IPs. Based on what Cameron has worked on, that could mean anything from Terminator, Alien and Avatar franchises. That's great news for Meta Quest owners, but more impressively, the stereoscopic technology behind Lightstorm Vision will also be available to developers and other content creators on the platform. It's already been an impressive year for Meta Quest VR, and we can already see its trajectory is heading in the right direction. How it will all play out? Who knows, but at the very least, I'm thrilled with where it is. More from Tom's GuideHow China Became the World’s Largest Gold Consumer and Producer

The Miami Hurricanes, who once appeared to be a near-lock for the College Football Playoff, are not playing for a national title. Instead, they will play in the Pop-Tarts Bowl in Orlando. That bowl berth against Iowa State is a let-down for fans with dreams of a sixth national title in their minds, as well as players hoping to compete for a championship. However, Miami’s trip to Orlando and the lead-up to it are still crucial periods for the Hurricanes for multiple reasons. First, it’s a chance for the program to achieve something it has not done in more than two decades: win 11 games. Although the 11th win won’t get them closer to a championship, it is a good sign of the program’s progress over Mario Cristobal’s tenure. It would also end UM’s five-game losing streak in bowls. “We’re not satisfied,” Cristobal said. “We want to win every single game. We won 10. We were close on the other two, but close isn’t good enough. We want progress. We’re hungry and driven to get better, and so that’s what our focus is on: to improving as a football program, to getting better, to moving into the postseason with an opportunity against a great football team like this and putting our best on the field.” There are signs the Hurricanes will show up at close to full strength for the bowl game. Running back Damien Martinez announced he was going to play, and star quarterback Cam Ward said in a video call posted on social media that he intends to play, as well. “We’re trying to win our first bowl game in 20 years,” Ward said in the video, mistaking the length of UM’s long bowl losing streak. “We’re going hard.” Playing in the bowl game also provides the opportunity for the Hurricanes to get in several practices between now and the game. That means Miami can develop its young players and prepare them for next season during both the practices and the bowl game itself. “It’s extremely valuable,” Cristobal said. “You really don’t have many opportunities throughout the course of the year — time is limited more and more each season with your student-athletes. I want to state this and be very clear: it’s very important, it’s ultra-important for the University of Miami to continue to develop and grow and progress by stressing the importance of offseason opportunities ... You learn a lot about your team and learn a lot about your people and your program when you head to the postseason.” Of course, there are potential negatives. Players can get hurt; Mark Fletcher Jr. suffered a foot injury in the Pinstripe Bowl last year that cost him all of spring practice. A poor performance can also potentially set the tone for next season, like how Florida State, fresh off a playoff snub last year, suffered a devastating loss against Georgia in the Orange Bowl and went on to a dismal 2-10 season this year. “This is the ending of ’24 and the beginning of ’25,” Cristobal said. “This is the last opportunity to be on the field and carry some momentum into the offseason. So it is, in essence, it is the most important game because it’s the next game. “There’s a lot of excitement in the form of opportunity for our guys. Our guys love to play football. The chance to play one more time with this special group — this is a special group of guys now. They’ve worked hard to really change the trajectory of the University of Miami, and they want to continue to elevate the status and the culture at the University of Miami. So certainly a ton to play for.” ____ Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Mumbai, Dec 28, 2024 Despite stock market volatility amid geo-political uncertainties, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net investors in India so far this year, as the country’s economy showed tremendous resilience, market watchers said on Saturday. For 2024 (till December 27), FIIs sold equity for Rs 119,277 crore through the exchanges. In contrast to this selling trend, they invested Rs 120,932 crore through the primary market, said experts, citing data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). “This means FIIs are net investors in India so far this year. The selling through exchanges is mainly due to the high valuations and investing through the primary market is mainly due to the fair valuations,” said Dr V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. The selling spree by FIIs seen in October and November declined in December. There has been occasional buying by FIIs in early December but they turned sellers again, though not on a sustained basis like in October and November. “An important characteristic about FII investment is that they have been consistent investors of equity through the primary market. In December through 27th, FIIs invested Rs 17,331 crore through the primary market,” said Kumar. This trend of selling through the exchanges and buying through the primary market is discernible in the year-long trend in 2024. In the debt market, FIIs have invested Rs 112,409 crores so far this year, as per the NSDL data. According to market experts, FIIs may again turn sellers into equity in early 2025 since the dollar has been appreciating (dollar index is above 108) and the US 10-year bond yields are attractive at around 4.4 per cent. “FIIs will turn buyers in India when there are indications of growth and earnings recovery,” they added. Manoj Purohit, Partner and Leader, Financial Services Tax, Tax and Regulatory Services, BDO India, said that after a couple of months of continuing hefty burnouts, the capital markets witnessed a comeback from the foreign fraternity this month. The feather in the cap is the record-breaking investments via the FDI route thereby crossing the $1 trillion mark. “The return of foreign participants to India market can be attributed to various factors. Primarily, on the macro front, the recent policy announcements in the US impacting the peer countries, settling geopolitical situation among Middle East countries, the well-controlled inflation, and interest rate check,” Purohit explained.(Agency)

PNC Financial Services Group Inc. Cuts Stock Position in Conagra Brands, Inc. (NYSE:CAG)washington (ap) – Nearly 100 former senior U.S. diplomats and intelligence and national security officials have urged Senate leaders to schedule closed-door hearings to allow for a full review of the government’s files on former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard , Donald Trump’s pick to be national intelligence director. The former officials, who served in both Democratic and Republican administrations, said they were “alarmed” by the choice of Gabbard to oversee all 18 U.S. intelligence agencies. They said her past actions “call into question her ability to deliver unbiased intelligence briefings to the President, Congress, and to the entire national security apparatus.” A spokesperson for Gabbard on the Trump transition team on Thursday denounced the appeal as an “unfounded” and “partisan” attack. Avril Haines, the current director of national intelligence, when asked Thursday whether intelligence sharing with allies could be in jeopardy under the next administration, cited the importance of those relationships and noted the strong bipartisan support for them in Congress. The question, at a Council on Foreign Relations talk, focused on the especially close intelligence sharing among the Five Eyes — the U.S., Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It did not mention Gabbard by name. “It is hard for me to believe that anybody coming in wouldn’t want to maintain those relationships,” Haines said. “So I wouldn’t think of them as being in significant risk,” she added. “I certainly hope that will continue.” Among those who signed the letter to Senate leaders were former Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, former NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller, former national security adviser Anthony Lake, and numerous retired ambassadors and high-ranking military officers. They wrote to current Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and incoming Republican Majority Leader John Thune on Wednesday to urge the closed briefings as part of the Senate’s review of Trump’s top appointments. They requested that Senate committees “consider in closed sessions all information available to the U.S. government when considering Ms. Gabbard’s qualifications to manage our country’s intelligence agencies, and more importantly, the protection of our intelligence sources and methods.” The letter singles out Gabbard’s 2017 meetings in Syria with President Bashar Assad, who is supported by Russian, Iranian and Iranian-allied forces in a now 13-year war against Syrian opposition forces seeking his overthrow. The U.S., which cut relations with Assad’s government and imposed sanctions over his conduct of the war, maintains about 900 troops in opposition-controlled northeast Syria, saying they are needed to block a resurgence of extremist groups. Gabbard, a Democratic member of Congress from Hawaii at the time of her Syria trip, drew heavy criticism for her meetings with a U.S. adversary and brutal leader. As the letter notes, her statements on the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine have aligned with Russian talking points , diverging from U.S. positions and policy. Gabbard throughout her political career has urged the U.S. to limit military engagement abroad other than combatting Islamic extremist groups. She has defended the Syria trip by saying it is necessary to engage with U.S. enemies. In postings on social media earlier this year she confirmed that the U.S. had for a time placed her “on a secret terror watch list” as a “potential domestic terror threat.” She blamed political retaliation. Neither she nor U.S. authorities have publicly detailed the circumstances involved. Alexa Henning, a spokesperson for Gabbard with the Trump team, called the letter sent to the Senate leaders “a perfect example” of why Trump chose Gabbard for this position. “These unfounded attacks are from the same geniuses who have blood on their hands from decades of faulty ‘intelligence,’” and use classified government information as a “partisan weapon to smear and imply things about their political enemy,” Henning said. A spokesperson for Thune did not immediately respond to questions about the request. —- Associated Press writer Didi Tang contributed.

2025 resolutions: Many Americans have the same plan for the new yearOne day Jesus Christ showed His divine power by multiplying fish and loaves until He fed a crowd of over 5,000 people. John 6:8-9 says, Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” Barley bread was inexpensive and considered less tasty in those days. It must have taken great faith for that boy to offer his meager lunch for sake of the cause. He could have been laughed at for the gesture, but that young man gave what little he had, and God used it to make a big difference for a lot of people. Like that boy, if we are thankful for what we do have and keep a little faith, God will improve our situation little by little. I am inspired by the story of Kyle McDonald, an internet celebrity from Canada, who traded his way up from a single red paperclip to a house in a series of 14 online trades over the course of a year. In 2005, MacDonald was inspired by a game he called “Bigger Better” in which you take what you have and trade it for something better and then keep trading until you get something of real value. Kyle took a red paperclip and traded on Craig’s List for a fish shaped pen. That went in exchange for a doorknob shaped like a face. An outdoorsman traded him a camp stove so that he could use that doorknob as a handle for his coffeepot. Kyle found a marine in California who had an extra a generator and needed that exact model of camp stove. The generator went for a beer keg and that for a snowmobile. A radio station took the snowmobile and gave him a trip for two to the Rockies. Kyle traveled to Yahk, B.C., where a man traded him the vacation for a delivery van. He found a music group who needed that van to haul equipment to concerts but could offer him a recording contract. A woman used that contract to realize her dream of becoming a singer and offered Kyle a year’s free rent to live in her duplex in Phoenix. A neighbor took the contract for free rent in exchange for a day spent with her celebrity boss, Alice Cooper. The shock rock celebrity met with Kyle in Fargo and brought him onstage to share his story. Cooper offered him another afternoon get together for Kyle to trade with a photographer from Kentucky. People thought Kyle was crazy to trade that backstage interview for a motorized snow globe of the rock band KISS, but Kyle knew he could trade the snow globe with LA Law star and avid snow globe collector Corbin Bernsen. Kyle received an acting part in Bernsen’s 2009 movie Donna on Demand. He traded that movie role to the town leaders of Kipling, Saskatchewan, so that one of their local high school grads (Nolan Hubbard) could have a shot at acting fame. The town traded Kyle a house, plus let Kyle be mayor for a day, and gave him the key to the city. They built him a statue of the world’s largest red paperclip. They even declared July 12 to be Paperclip Day, the day when Kyle and girlfriend Dominique became citizens of Kipling for life. Kyle took what little he had, got active and turned a paperclip into a house. He also blessed a lot of people’s lives along the way. Kyle wrote a book and now he travels around the world telling people they can take the smallest ability and use it to change the world if they have the courage to try.

Starmer will first visit the United Arab Emirates and then travel to Saudi Arabia, before stopping off in Cyprus on his way back to London on Tuesday in a bid "to build closer ties and drive long term UK growth". The trip to Abu Dhabi and Riyadh comes as his Labour government pursues a free-trade deal with the Gulf Cooperation Council's six nations: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and UAE. "There is huge untapped potential in this region, which is why, while here, I will be making the case to accelerate progress on the Gulf Cooperation Council Free Trade Agreement," Starmer said in a statement released Saturday. The meetings will also aim to "deepen our research and development collaboration" and partner on projects in areas including defence and artificial intelligence, Starmer added. The British leader will land in the UAE on Sunday evening, ahead of Monday morning talks with its president Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Later Monday, Starmer will fly to Saudi Arabia to meet Riyadh's de facto leader Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who last week hosted French President Emmanuel Macron. A Downing Street press release called the UAE and Saudi "some of the UK's most vital modern-day partners". The regional tour will end on Tuesday with Starmer meeting President Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia, the first bilateral talks between the leaders of Britain and Cyprus in over five decades. Starmer is also due to address British troops stationed in Cyprus. Labour has staked its credibility on a promise to get Britain's sluggish economy firing again. It says a GCC agreement could boost bilateral trade, currently accounting for £55 billion ($70 bn) of UK trade, by 16 percent, "potentially adding an extra £8.6 billion a year in the long run". It hopes a deal would see Gulf sovereign wealth funds invest in a range of sectors, including energy and infrastructure, while also opening up lucrative markets to British firms. Starmer's trip comes after Britain last week rolled out the diplomatic red carpet for Qatar's emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani who enjoyed a state visit to the UK. Starmer discussed trade with the royal during talks in Downing Street that coincided with Qatar announcing it will invest £1 billion ($1.3 billion) in British climate technologies. Discussing regional conflicts is expected to be "high up the agenda", including the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, the fragile ceasefire in Lebanon and renewed unrest in Syria. Starmer will also be looking to repair relations between the UK and UAE that soured under the previous Conservative government after an Abu Dhabi-backed bid to buy the Telegraph newspaper failed. The Gulf visit will be Starmer's 15th international trip since he entered Number 10 on July 5. Opponents have criticised the amount of time he has spent out of the country but allies insist the trips have been vital to get to know other world leaders. Starmer, 61, has been insisting in capitals that "Britain is back on the world stage" following rancour over its departure from the European Union. pdh/aks/jj

Syrian insurgents reach the capital's suburbs. Worried residents flee and stock up on supplies BEIRUT (AP) — Insurgents’ stunning march across Syria is gaining speed with news that they have reached the suburbs of the capital of Damascus. The government on Saturday was forced to deny rumors that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The rebels’ moves around Damascus were reported by an opposition war monitor and a rebel commander. They came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including two provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions. The factions are by a group that has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the United Nations. SAN ANTONIO − Tonight’s game between Colorado and BYU in the Alamo Bowl might be the most attractive college football bowl game that is not part of the College Football Playoff. Count the reasons: It’s a prime-time Saturday night game on ABC. It features the reigning Heisman Trophy winner from Colorado, Travis Hunter . It also features flamboyant Colorado coach Deion Sanders and his son Shedeur, who might be the top quarterback selected in the NFL draft in April. This will be their last game together in college − the Buffaloes (9-3) vs. the Cougars (10-2), two Big 12 Conference teams on opposite sides of the Rocky Mountains who haven’t played each other since the Freedom Bowl in 1988. Shedeur Sanders, Colorado’s quarterback, ranks first nationally in completion percentage (74.2%) and will face a BYU defense that finished the regular season tied for first nationally in passes intercepted (20). Like Shedeur, Hunter also will play the game under a massive insurance policy to protect him in case he’s injured. Because he plays on offense and defense, Hunter’s injury risk is essentially doubled, adding to the drama tonight after so many other top NFL prospects opted not to play in bowl games to avoid any injury risk that could hurt their future earnings. Will this bowl game be worth it for Hunter and Shedeur Sanders? We’re about to find out. Follow along here for live updates, highlights and news: BYU vs. Colorado odds, line The Colorado Buffaloes are favorites to defeat the BYU Cougars in Saturday’s college football matchup, according to the BetMGM college football odds . JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — “My Driver and I” was supposed to be made in 2016, but was scuttled amid Saudi Arabia’s decades-long cinema ban. Eight years later, the landscape for film in the kingdom looks much different — and the star of “My Driver and I” now has an award. Roula Dakheelallah was named the winner of the Chopard Emerging Saudi Talent award at the Red Sea International Film Festival on Thursday. The award — and the glitzy festival itself — is a sign of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to shaping a new film industry. “My heart is attached to cinema and art; I have always dreamed of a moment like this,” Dakheelallah, who still works a 9-5 job, told The Associated Press before the awards ceremony. “I used to work in voluntary films and help my friends in the field, but this is my first big role in a film.” The reopening of cinemas in 2018 marked a cultural turning point for Saudi Arabia, an absolute monarchy that had instituted the ban 35 years before, under the influence of ultraconservative religious authorities. It has since invested heavily in a native film industry by building theaters and launching programs to support local filmmakers through grants and training. The Red Sea International Film Festival was launched just a year later, part of an attempt to expand Saudi influence into films, gaming, sports and other cultural fields. Activists have decried the investments as whitewashing the kingdom’s human rights record as it tightly controls speech and remains one of the world’s top executioners. With FIFA awarding the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia this week, Lina al-Hathloul, a Saudi activist with the London-based rights group ALQST, said Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman “has really managed to create this bubble where people only see entertainment and they don’t see the reality on the ground.” These efforts are part of Vision 2030, an ambitious reform plan unveiled in 2016 to ease the economy’s dependence on oil. As part of it, Saudi Arabia plans to construct 350 cinemas with over 2,500 movie screens — by this past April, across 22 cities, it already had 66 cinemas showing movies from the local film industry, as well as Hollywood and Bollywood. (The Red Sea International Film Festival attracts a host of talent from the latter industries, with Viola Davis and Priyanka Chopra Jonas also picking up awards Thursday.) The country’s General Entertainment Authority last month opened Al Hisn Studios on the outskirts of Riyadh. As one of the largest such production hubs in the Middle East, it not only includes several film studios but also a production village with workshops for carpentry, blacksmithing and fashion tailoring. “These facilities, when they exist, will stimulate filmmakers,” said Saudi actor Mohammed Elshehri. “Today, no writer or director has an excuse to imagine and say, ‘I cannot implement my imagination.’” The facilities are one part of the equation — the content itself is another. One of the major players in transforming Saudi filmmaking has been Telfaz11, a media company founded in 2011 that began as a YouTube channel and quickly became a trailblazer. Producing high-quality digital content such as short films, comedy sketches and series, Telfaz11 offered fresh perspectives on Saudi and regional issues. In 2020, Telfaz11 signed a partnership with Netflix to produce original content for the streaming giant. The result has been movies that demonstrate an evolution on the storytelling level, tackling topics that were once off-limits and sensitive to the public like secret nightlife in “Mandoob” (“Night Courier”) and changing social norms in “Naga.” “I think we tell our stories in a very simple way, and that’s what reaches the world,” Elshehri says of the changing shift. “When you tell your story in a natural way without any affectation, it will reach every person.” But the films were not without their critics, drawing mixed reaction. Social media discoursed ranged from pleasure that Saudi film were tackling such topics to anger over how the films reflected conservative society. As Hana Al-Omair, a Saudi writer and director, points out, there are still many stories left untold. “We certainly have a long time ahead of us before we can tell the Saudi narrative as it should be,” she said, acknowledging that there are still barriers and rampant censorship. “The Goat Life,” a Malayalam-language movie about an Indian man forced to work without pay in Saudi Arabia, is not available on Netflix’s platform in the country. Movies that explore political topics or LGBTQ+ stories are essentially out of the question. Even “My Driver and I,” featured at the Red Sea festival alongside 11 other Saudi feature-length films, was initially too controversial. It centers on a Sudanese man in Jeddah, living away from his own daughter, who feels responsible for the girl he drives as her parents are absent. It was initially blocked from being made because of the relationship between the girl and the driver, filmmaker Ahd Kamel has said, even though it’s not a romantic relationship. Now in 2024, the film is a success story — a symbol of the Saudi film industry’s evolution as well as the growing role of women like Kamel behind the camera and Dakheelallah in front of it. “I see the change in Saudi cinema, a very beautiful change and it is moving at a wonderful speed. In my opinion, we do not need to rush,” Dakheelallah said. “We need to guide the truth of the artistic movement that is happening in Saudi Arabia.” Advertisement AdvertisementDan Walters: Tax loopholes come with a cost

casino cebu The Disconnect Between Friday Khutbas And Current Affairs: Need To Revive The Essence Of The Pulpit The Friday Khutba (sermon) holds a unique and sacred position in Islam. Historically, it has served as a platform for spiritual rejuvenation, moral guidance, and a reflection of the prevailing socio-political and economic circumstances of the community. The pulpit, therefore, is not just a religious podium but a beacon of enlightenment, encouraging the community to navigate their worldly challenges while upholding their spiritual principles. However, in many parts of the Muslim world today, the Khutbas seem to have drifted from addressing current affairs, often delving into repetitive and abstract theological discussions that fail to connect with the realities of the congregation. This detachment raises a provocative question: why are our Friday sermons so far removed from current affairs, and how can we reclaim the essence of the pulpit? The true purpose of the Friday Khutba lies in its capacity to address the pressing needs of the Muslim Ummah (community). Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) used the Khutba to educate, inspire, and mobilize the community, addressing real issues such as justice, charity, leadership, and societal responsibilities. The Khutba was not limited to exhorting piety but was also a medium for public service announcements, community decisions, and even diplomatic guidance. Historically, Khutbas during the Rashidun and subsequent caliphates reflected the challenges of the time, ranging from matters of governance to external threats. These sermons served as a call to action, urging Muslims to embody the principles of Islam in their daily lives and communal obligations. The current disconnects in contemporary times, the Khutba has largely become ceremonial, with many sermons confined to generic exhortations about faith, worship, and personal morality. While these are undoubtedly important, this limited scope often neglects the pressing social, economic, and political challenges faced by the community. Why has this shift occurred? Lack of awareness or preparation some imams may lack the requisite knowledge or skills to discuss contemporary issues effectively. Delivering a well-researched and impactful Khutba on current affairs requires preparation, critical thinking, and an understanding of both Islamic principles and modern realities—a combination not always present in those entrusted with the pulpit. Disconnection from the audience, a significant number of imams fail to engage with their congregations or understand their challenges. This disconnect creates a gap between the pulpit and the pews, rendering the Khutba irrelevant to the lived experiences of the attendees. As a consequence, of cultural and historical myopia, some preachers focus excessively on historical anecdotes and abstract theological debates, sidelining the application of Islamic principles to contemporary challenges. While historical narratives are valuable, their relevance diminishes when not linked to current contexts. The consequences of irrelevant Khutbas have caused detachment that has far-reaching implications. The pulpit, instead of being a source of guidance and empowerment, becomes a ritualistic formality. As a result, the youth are disengaged. Young Muslims, grappling with identity crises, societal pressures, and global challenges, find little solace or direction in sermons that fail to address their realities. The community is fragmented, and the lack of guidance on contemporary issues exacerbates disunity within the Muslim Ummah, leaving individuals to navigate challenges in isolation. Moral and social decline ensues without relevant and timely guidance and societal problems such as corruption, substance abuse, domestic violence, and economic exploitation continue unabated. Islam is perceived as irrelevant for non-Muslims and even some Muslims, the faith appears disconnected from the modern world, reinforcing stereotypes about its incompatibility with contemporary life. Reviving the essence of the pulpit “To reclaim the pulpit as a platform of relevance and empowerment, several steps must be undertaken: The Role of the Congregation While imams play a pivotal role, the congregation must also demand relevance and engagement from their Khutbas. Communities should support and encourage imams to address pressing issues, creating a culture where the pulpit becomes a shared space for learning and growth. The Friday Khutba is more than a ritual; it is a responsibility. The pulpit should not shy away from addressing the realities of the world, for Islam is a faith that encompasses all aspects of life. Reviving the essence of the Khutba means reclaiming it as a platform of relevance, inspiration, and action. By bridging the gap between faith and reality, the Khutba can once again become the guiding light it was meant to be, empowering Muslims to navigate their challenges while upholding the principles of Islam. Let us transform our sermons into catalysts for change, making them as vibrant and dynamic as the faith they represent. Third-place Madrid restored its three-point lead over fourth-place Athletic Bilbao, which beat Villarreal earlier Sunday. Rodrigo De Paul gave Atletico the perfect start when he lashed home a stunning opener in the 10th minute. However, goals from Dodi Lukébakio, Isaac Romero and Juanlu Sanchez put Sevilla 3-1 up early in the second half and Atletico, without the vocal support of some home fans in a dispute over tickets, seemed lost in an unusually quiet at Metropolitano Stadium. Simeone’s side, though, is known for its resilience and it was not long before the fightback began. Griezmann reduced the deficit in the 62nd minute and 17 minutes later, after Simeone made five substitutions in a quarter of an hour, Samuel Lino got the equalizer with a low shot from 30 yards. Griezmann himself got the winner in stoppage time to consolidate Atletico’s third place. The Madrid club now has 35 points, one behind city rival Real and three behind league leader Barcelona. “We struggled to get into the game,” Griezmann said. “We missed the support of the fans behind the goal. But in the end we managed to come back.” Fourth-place Bilbao beats Villarreal Athletic Bilbao consolidated fourth place with a comfortable 2-0 win over Villarreal, the team immediately below it in the table and one of its closest rivals for a Champions League spot. Aitor Paredes put Athletic ahead when he glanced home a corner kick in 14 minutes and Iñaki Williams made it 2-0 midway through the second half. It was the fourth consecutive league win for Athletic but the victory was marred by a silent protest from an organized fan group. The group refused to sing or chant in response to a rift between it and the club president, who reported threats to police earlier in the week. Several Athletic players expressed solidarity with the president and the team did not salute the fans behind the goal after the match. “It’s a very sad win and a time for everyone to pull together,” club captain Óscar De Marcos said in comments reported by newspaper Marca. “The silence was notable during the game but we need to keep doing our job.” Earlier Sunday, Real Sociedad won for the fourth time in a row, beating Leganes 3-0 at the Butarque stadium near Madrid. Three days after his extra-time goal gave Sociedad a 1-0 win at fourth-tier Conquense in the Copa del Rey, Brais Méndez scored again to give the visitors an early lead. Substitute Ander Barrenetxea’s first goal of the league season doubled its lead 10 minutes from time and then Mikel Oyarzabal added a third in stoppage time. It was only the fourth time in 16 matches that Sociedad has scored twice in a league game and the win lifted it into sixth, above Osasuna, which drew 2-2 with Alaves. Alaves took only 37 seconds for Kike Garcia to put the team ahead with a diving header. However, Ante Budimir and Rubén García scored early in the second half to put Osasuna in front before Kike Garcia got his second of the game to tie the scores at 2-2. The point was the first for new Alaves coach Eduardo Coudet but still leaves it in 15th place without a win in five games. ___ AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? PLAINS, Ga. (AP) — Newly married and sworn as a Naval officer, Jimmy Carter left his tiny hometown in 1946 hoping to climb the ranks and see the world. Less than a decade later, the death of his father and namesake, a merchant farmer and local politician who went by “Mr. Earl,” prompted the submariner and his wife, Rosalynn, to return to the rural life of Plains, Georgia, they thought they’d escaped. The lieutenant never would be an admiral. Instead, he became commander in chief. Years after his presidency ended in humbling defeat, he would add a Nobel Peace Prize, awarded not for his White House accomplishments but “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.” The life of James Earl Carter Jr., the 39th and longest-lived U.S. president, ended Sunday at the age of 100 where it began: Plains, the town of 600 that fueled his political rise, welcomed him after his fall and sustained him during 40 years of service that redefined what it means to be a former president. With the stubborn confidence of an engineer and an optimism rooted in his Baptist faith, Carter described his motivations in politics and beyond in the same way: an almost missionary zeal to solve problems and improve lives. Carter was raised amid racism, abject poverty and hard rural living — realities that shaped both his deliberate politics and emphasis on human rights. “He always felt a responsibility to help people,” said Jill Stuckey, a longtime friend of Carter's in Plains. “And when he couldn’t make change wherever he was, he decided he had to go higher.” Carter's path, a mix of happenstance and calculation , pitted moral imperatives against political pragmatism; and it defied typical labels of American politics, especially caricatures of one-term presidents as failures. “We shouldn’t judge presidents by how popular they are in their day. That's a very narrow way of assessing them," Carter biographer Jonathan Alter told the Associated Press. “We should judge them by how they changed the country and the world for the better. On that score, Jimmy Carter is not in the first rank of American presidents, but he stands up quite well.” Later in life, Carter conceded that many Americans, even those too young to remember his tenure, judged him ineffective for failing to contain inflation or interest rates, end the energy crisis or quickly bring home American hostages in Iran. He gained admirers instead for his work at The Carter Center — advocating globally for public health, human rights and democracy since 1982 — and the decades he and Rosalynn wore hardhats and swung hammers with Habitat for Humanity. Yet the common view that he was better after the Oval Office than in it annoyed Carter, and his allies relished him living long enough to see historians reassess his presidency. “He doesn’t quite fit in today’s terms” of a left-right, red-blue scoreboard, said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who visited the former president multiple times during his own White House bid. At various points in his political career, Carter labeled himself “progressive” or “conservative” — sometimes both at once. His most ambitious health care bill failed — perhaps one of his biggest legislative disappointments — because it didn’t go far enough to suit liberals. Republicans, especially after his 1980 defeat, cast him as a left-wing cartoon. It would be easiest to classify Carter as a centrist, Buttigieg said, “but there’s also something radical about the depth of his commitment to looking after those who are left out of society and out of the economy.” Indeed, Carter’s legacy is stitched with complexities, contradictions and evolutions — personal and political. The self-styled peacemaker was a war-trained Naval Academy graduate who promised Democratic challenger Ted Kennedy that he’d “kick his ass.” But he campaigned with a call to treat everyone with “respect and compassion and with love.” Carter vowed to restore America’s virtue after the shame of Vietnam and Watergate, and his technocratic, good-government approach didn't suit Republicans who tagged government itself as the problem. It also sometimes put Carter at odds with fellow Democrats. The result still was a notable legislative record, with wins on the environment, education, and mental health care. He dramatically expanded federally protected lands, began deregulating air travel, railroads and trucking, and he put human rights at the center of U.S. foreign policy. As a fiscal hawk, Carter added a relative pittance to the national debt, unlike successors from both parties. Carter nonetheless struggled to make his achievements resonate with the electorate he charmed in 1976. Quoting Bob Dylan and grinning enthusiastically, he had promised voters he would “never tell a lie.” Once in Washington, though, he led like a joyless engineer, insisting his ideas would become reality and he'd be rewarded politically if only he could convince enough people with facts and logic. This served him well at Camp David, where he brokered peace between Israel’s Menachem Begin and Epypt’s Anwar Sadat, an experience that later sparked the idea of The Carter Center in Atlanta. Carter's tenacity helped the center grow to a global force that monitored elections across five continents, enabled his freelance diplomacy and sent public health experts across the developing world. The center’s wins were personal for Carter, who hoped to outlive the last Guinea worm parasite, and nearly did. As president, though, the approach fell short when he urged consumers beleaguered by energy costs to turn down their thermostats. Or when he tried to be the nation’s cheerleader, beseeching Americans to overcome a collective “crisis of confidence.” Republican Ronald Reagan exploited Carter's lecturing tone with a belittling quip in their lone 1980 debate. “There you go again,” the former Hollywood actor said in response to a wonky answer from the sitting president. “The Great Communicator” outpaced Carter in all but six states. Carter later suggested he “tried to do too much, too soon” and mused that he was incompatible with Washington culture: media figures, lobbyists and Georgetown social elites who looked down on the Georgians and their inner circle as “country come to town.” Carter carefully navigated divides on race and class on his way to the Oval Office. Born Oct. 1, 1924 , Carter was raised in the mostly Black community of Archery, just outside Plains, by a progressive mother and white supremacist father. Their home had no running water or electricity but the future president still grew up with the relative advantages of a locally prominent, land-owning family in a system of Jim Crow segregation. He wrote of President Franklin Roosevelt’s towering presence and his family’s Democratic Party roots, but his father soured on FDR, and Jimmy Carter never campaigned or governed as a New Deal liberal. He offered himself as a small-town peanut farmer with an understated style, carrying his own luggage, bunking with supporters during his first presidential campaign and always using his nickname. And he began his political career in a whites-only Democratic Party. As private citizens, he and Rosalynn supported integration as early as the 1950s and believed it inevitable. Carter refused to join the White Citizens Council in Plains and spoke out in his Baptist church against denying Black people access to worship services. “This is not my house; this is not your house,” he said in a churchwide meeting, reminding fellow parishioners their sanctuary belonged to God. Yet as the appointed chairman of Sumter County schools he never pushed to desegregate, thinking it impractical after the Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown v. Board decision. And while presidential candidate Carter would hail the 1965 Voting Rights Act, signed by fellow Democrat Lyndon Johnson when Carter was a state senator, there is no record of Carter publicly supporting it at the time. Carter overcame a ballot-stuffing opponent to win his legislative seat, then lost the 1966 governor's race to an arch-segregationist. He won four years later by avoiding explicit mentions of race and campaigning to the right of his rival, who he mocked as “Cufflinks Carl” — the insult of an ascendant politician who never saw himself as part the establishment. Carter’s rural and small-town coalition in 1970 would match any victorious Republican electoral map in 2024. Once elected, though, Carter shocked his white conservative supporters — and landed on the cover of Time magazine — by declaring that “the time for racial discrimination is over.” Before making the jump to Washington, Carter befriended the family of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., whom he’d never sought out as he eyed the governor’s office. Carter lamented his foot-dragging on school integration as a “mistake.” But he also met, conspicuously, with Alabama's segregationist Gov. George Wallace to accept his primary rival's endorsement ahead of the 1976 Democratic convention. “He very shrewdly took advantage of his own Southerness,” said Amber Roessner, a University of Tennessee professor and expert on Carter’s campaigns. A coalition of Black voters and white moderate Democrats ultimately made Carter the last Democratic presidential nominee to sweep the Deep South. Then, just as he did in Georgia, he used his power in office to appoint more non-whites than all his predecessors had, combined. He once acknowledged “the secret shame” of white Americans who didn’t fight segregation. But he also told Alter that doing more would have sacrificed his political viability – and thus everything he accomplished in office and after. King's daughter, Bernice King, described Carter as wisely “strategic” in winning higher offices to enact change. “He was a leader of conscience,” she said in an interview. Rosalynn Carter, who died on Nov. 19 at the age of 96, was identified by both husband and wife as the “more political” of the pair; she sat in on Cabinet meetings and urged him to postpone certain priorities, like pressing the Senate to relinquish control of the Panama Canal. “Let that go until the second term,” she would sometimes say. The president, recalled her former aide Kathy Cade, retorted that he was “going to do what’s right” even if “it might cut short the time I have.” Rosalynn held firm, Cade said: “She’d remind him you have to win to govern.” Carter also was the first president to appoint multiple women as Cabinet officers. Yet by his own telling, his career sprouted from chauvinism in the Carters' early marriage: He did not consult Rosalynn when deciding to move back to Plains in 1953 or before launching his state Senate bid a decade later. Many years later, he called it “inconceivable” that he didn’t confer with the woman he described as his “full partner,” at home, in government and at The Carter Center. “We developed a partnership when we were working in the farm supply business, and it continued when Jimmy got involved in politics,” Rosalynn Carter told AP in 2021. So deep was their trust that when Carter remained tethered to the White House in 1980 as 52 Americans were held hostage in Tehran, it was Rosalynn who campaigned on her husband’s behalf. “I just loved it,” she said, despite the bitterness of defeat. Fair or not, the label of a disastrous presidency had leading Democrats keep their distance, at least publicly, for many years, but Carter managed to remain relevant, writing books and weighing in on societal challenges. He lamented widening wealth gaps and the influence of money in politics. He voted for democratic socialist Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton in 2016, and later declared that America had devolved from fully functioning democracy to “oligarchy.” Yet looking ahead to 2020, with Sanders running again, Carter warned Democrats not to “move to a very liberal program,” lest they help re-elect President Donald Trump. Carter scolded the Republican for his serial lies and threats to democracy, and chided the U.S. establishment for misunderstanding Trump’s populist appeal. He delighted in yearly convocations with Emory University freshmen, often asking them to guess how much he’d raised in his two general election campaigns. “Zero,” he’d gesture with a smile, explaining the public financing system candidates now avoid so they can raise billions. Carter still remained quite practical in partnering with wealthy corporations and foundations to advance Carter Center programs. Carter recognized that economic woes and the Iran crisis doomed his presidency, but offered no apologies for appointing Paul Volcker as the Federal Reserve chairman whose interest rate hikes would not curb inflation until Reagan's presidency. He was proud of getting all the hostages home without starting a shooting war, even though Tehran would not free them until Reagan's Inauguration Day. “Carter didn’t look at it” as a failure, Alter emphasized. “He said, ‘They came home safely.’ And that’s what he wanted.” Well into their 90s, the Carters greeted visitors at Plains’ Maranatha Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and where he will have his last funeral before being buried on family property alongside Rosalynn . Carter, who made the congregation’s collection plates in his woodworking shop, still garnered headlines there, calling for women’s rights within religious institutions, many of which, he said, “subjugate” women in church and society. Carter was not one to dwell on regrets. “I am at peace with the accomplishments, regret the unrealized goals and utilize my former political position to enhance everything we do,” he wrote around his 90th birthday. The politician who had supposedly hated Washington politics also enjoyed hosting Democratic presidential contenders as public pilgrimages to Plains became advantageous again. Carter sat with Buttigieg for the final time March 1, 2020, hours before the Indiana mayor ended his campaign and endorsed eventual winner Joe Biden. “He asked me how I thought the campaign was going,” Buttigieg said, recalling that Carter flashed his signature grin and nodded along as the young candidate, born a year after Carter left office, “put the best face” on the walloping he endured the day before in South Carolina. Never breaking his smile, the 95-year-old host fired back, “I think you ought to drop out.” “So matter of fact,” Buttigieg said with a laugh. “It was somehow encouraging.” Carter had lived enough, won plenty and lost enough to take the long view. “He talked a lot about coming from nowhere,” Buttigieg said, not just to attain the presidency but to leverage “all of the instruments you have in life” and “make the world more peaceful.” In his farewell address as president, Carter said as much to the country that had embraced and rejected him. “The struggle for human rights overrides all differences of color, nation or language,” he declared. “Those who hunger for freedom, who thirst for human dignity and who suffer for the sake of justice — they are the patriots of this cause.” Carter pledged to remain engaged with and for them as he returned “home to the South where I was born and raised,” home to Plains, where that young lieutenant had indeed become “a fellow citizen of the world.” —- Bill Barrow, based in Atlanta, has covered national politics including multiple presidential campaigns for the AP since 2012.Home | News | Opinion Renaissance Of Handcrafts In A Digital World Opinion: Renaissance of handcrafts in a digital world Resurgence of crafts in a digital world is about creating a conscious economy that respects resources By Telangana Today Published Date - 29 December 2024, 10:30 PM By Viiveck Verma One might argue that in a world of digital innovation and artificial intelligence, the return to traditional craftsmanship might seem paradoxical, yet it has gained momentum as consumers and creators alike seek connection, authenticity, and sustainability in an era of rapid consumption. Once viewed as remnants of a bygone era, handcrafts are witnessing a renaissance as artisans and enthusiasts rekindle the value of skills passed down through generations. This revival isn’t just a nostalgic nod to the past; it represents a growing awareness of the social, economic and environmental potential of craftsmanship in a world that increasingly prizes speed and convenience over substance and soul. Also Read Opinion: Preserve human touch with AI Opinion: Learning from nature Opinion: AI for self-betterment Deep Connect The current demand for handcrafted goods is fueled, in part, by a reaction to the digital saturation that has reshaped modern life. In a society where mass-produced items flood the market and the pace of consumption outpaces any sort of reflection, handmade items offer an appealing counterbalance. They embody uniqueness, with each piece marked by the subtle imperfections that make it genuinely one-of-a-kind. Handcrafted products allow buyers to establish a deeper connection with their purchases, knowing that they are supporting an artisan’s skill, effort and personal touch. This quest for connection is particularly evident in sectors of fashion, home decor and culinary arts, where customers are increasingly willing to pay a premium for items that reflect craftsmanship over mechanical precision. A meticulously hand-stitched leather bag or a bespoke piece of furniture speaks volumes in a world where nearly everything is plucked from an assembly line. People are drawn to the idea of owning something that requires time, care and expertise, qualities that machines, for all their efficiency, struggle to replicate. Economic Empowerment Craftsmanship is, at its core, a cultural and historical repository, preserving traditional techniques, local materials, and native designs. The global resurgence of handcrafted goods has allowed artisans to reclaim their cultural heritage, often transforming it into economic empowerment. Take, for example, the resurgence of demand for Japanese indigo dyeing or India’s intricate block-printing techniques. These crafts not only embody the history and traditions of their regions but also provide livelihoods in areas where other economic opportunities may be scarce. Brands must ensure that their partnerships with artisans are equitable and respect the labour-intensive nature of true craftsmanship Countries around the world are recognising this value. In Mexico, the government has implemented initiatives to preserve traditional crafts like Oaxacan weaving and Alebrije carving, while in Africa, organisations are investing in handwoven textiles to support local economies. These initiatives do so much more than sustain age-old practices. They allow communities to thrive and maintain a unique identity in a globalised world. In fact, it’s not unusual now to find designers, both local and international, collaborating with indigenous artisans to incorporate traditional elements into modern designs, creating pieces that are both timeless and contemporary. However, while this trend benefits artisans, it also raises ethical considerations. As the demand for handcrafted goods rises, artisans face pressure to produce at a pace that matches mill production, thus contradicting the philosophy of craftsmanship itself. Brands looking to capitalise on the appeal of ‘authenticity’ must tread carefully, ensuring that their partnerships with artisans are equitable and respect the time and labour-intensive nature of true craftsmanship. Otherwise, the industry risks undermining the very principles it aims to uphold. Tech Advantage It may seem that technology is the antithesis of traditional craftsmanship, but the digital age has, paradoxically, been a powerful enabler for the craft revival. Social media platforms like Instagram and Etsy have provided artisans with visibility and a global audience previously unimaginable. Artisans can now share their processes, tell their stories, and showcase their work to consumers across the world, bridging the gap between creator and consumer without the expense of moving themselves or their work. This democratisation of art and craft has allowed small, independent artisans to find buyers from across the globe, who appreciate their work, sidestepping the need for intermediaries and allowing for more direct and profitable transactions. Technology has also enhanced collaboration between artisans and designers across borders. Digital tools enable designers to experiment with traditional motifs, adapting them into new forms with hybrid aesthetics that appeal to modern tastes. However, the question remains: to what extent can digital tools coexist with or enhance traditional craftsmanship without diluting it? There is a fine line between innovation and appropriation, and as the craft industry expands, it must navigate this balance carefully. While technology facilitates access and expands markets, the essence of craftsmanship, the focus on skill, patience, and artistry, must not be compromised. Automation can certainly replicate techniques, but it cannot capture the human intention behind each individual creation. A handcrafted object possesses an emotional resonance precisely because it was made by human hands, a quality that cannot be digitised. Sustainable Consumption The revival of craftsmanship dovetails with the increasing consumer awareness around sustainability. The fashion and home goods industries, notorious for their environmental impact, are under scrutiny as consumers seek more eco-friendly options. Handcrafted goods, with their emphasis on quality and durability, offer an appealing alternative to fast fashion and disposable decor. Products made by artisans tend to be designed for longevity rather than obsolescence, contributing to a more sustainable consumption model. For instance, a handwoven rug made with natural dyes or a piece of pottery crafted from local clay typically has a lower carbon footprint than its mass-produced equivalents. Artisans are often more in tune with sustainable practices, sourcing materials locally and producing in small batches, avoiding overproduction. The craft revival isn’t merely about celebrating tradition; it’s about creating a conscious, circular economy that respects resources and values durability over trend-driven consumption. As the digital world accelerates, the slow, methodical pace of craftsmanship offers a welcome counterpoint. For all the advancements in technology, the resurgence of traditional crafts reveals a universal human truth: people crave meaning and connection in their lives. Craftsmanship, with its emphasis on skill, artistry and cultural resonance, offers a tactile and emotional depth that digital products often lack. Yet, as this revival continues, it is crucial to protect the integrity of traditional crafts, ensuring they are not commodified to the point of losing their authenticity.
