Nearly half of American teenagers say they are online “constantly” despite of social media and smartphones on their mental health, according to a new report published Thursday by the Pew Research Center. As in past years, YouTube was the single most popular platform teenagers used — 90% said they watched videos on the site, down slightly from 95% in 2022. Nearly three-quarters said they visit YouTube every day. There was a slight downward trend in several popular apps teens used. For instance, 63% of teens said they used TikTok, down from 67% and Snapchat slipped to 55% from 59%. This small decline could be due to pandemic-era restrictions easing up and kids having more time to see friends in person, but it’s . X saw the biggest decline among teenage users. Only 17% of teenagers said they use X, down from 23% in 2022, the year Elon Musk bought the platform. Reddit held steady at 14%. About 6% of teenagers said they use Threads, Meta’s answer to X that launched in 2023. The report comes as countries around the world are grappling with how to handle the effects of social media on young people’s well-being. Australia recently passed a law from social networks, though it’s unclear how it will be able to enforce the age limit — and whether it will come with unintended consequences such as isolating vulnerable kids from their peers. Meta’s messaging service WhatsApp was a rare exception in that it saw the number of teenage users increase, to 23% from 17% in 2022. Pew also asked kids how often they use various online platforms. Small but significant numbers said they are on them “almost constantly.” For YouTube, 15% reported constant use, for TikTok, 16% and for Snapchat, 13%. As in previous surveys, girls were more likely to use TikTok almost constantly while boys gravitated to YouTube. There was no meaningful gender difference in the use of Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook. Roughly a quarter of Black and Hispanic teens said they visit TikTok almost constantly, compared with just 8% of white teenagers. The report was based on a survey of 1,391 U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 conducted from Sept. 18 to Oct. 10, 2024.
CARSON, Calif. (AP) — The LA Galaxy and the New York Red Bulls have been Major League Soccer mainstays since the league's inaugural season in 1996, signing glamorous players and regularly competing for championships through years of success and setbacks in a league that's perpetually improving and expanding. Yet just a year ago, both of these clubs appeared to be a very long way from the stage they'll share Saturday in the MLS Cup Final . The Galaxy were one of MLS’ worst teams after a season of internal turmoil and public fan dissent, while the Red Bulls were merely a steady mediocrity seeking yet another coach to chart a new direction. A year later, these MLS founders are meeting in the league's first Cup final between teams from North America's two biggest markets. “Two original clubs being able to put themselves in this situation, I think it’s great,” Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. “To see two clubs that have been at it as long as this league has been around be here, I think it’s a special moment. Couldn’t be two more different and contrasting styles as well, which could make for an interesting game, and I would imagine a high-intensity game.” Everything changed in 2024 after a dismal decade for the Galaxy , who are favored to cap their transformation by winning their team's record sixth MLS championship with a roster that's dramatically different from its past few groups — albeit with one massive injury absence in the final. The transformation of the Red Bulls happened only in the postseason, when a team that hadn't won a playoff game since 2017 suddenly turned into world-beaters under rookie coach Sandro Schwarz. New York struggled through the final three months of league play with only two wins before posting road playoff victories over defending champ Columbus , archrival New York City FC and conference finalist Orlando to storm into the Cup final. “We know about the history (of our club), and we know tomorrow will define what that could mean,” Schwarz said Friday. “To feel the pressure for tomorrow, it’s necessary, because it’s a final, and without pressure it’s not possible to bring the best quality on the field.” The Red Bulls have never won an MLS Cup, only reaching the championship match once before. What's more, they've somehow never won a Cup in any tournament, although they’ve collected three Supporters’ Shields for MLS' best regular-season record. The Galaxy’s trophy case is large and loaded, and those five MLS Cups are on the top shelf. But not much of that team success happened in the past decade for the club that famously brought David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robbie Keane, Steven Gerrard and many other international stars to Hollywood. In fact, this season has ended a grim era for the Galaxy, who haven't lost all year at their frequently renamed home stadium — which was the site of protests and boycotts just a year ago. The club's fans were tired of LA's steady underachievement and ineptitude in the front office run by team president Chris Klein, who was fired in May 2023. One year ago Thursday, the Galaxy hired Will Kuntz, a longtime Los Angeles FC executive who engineered his new club's roster transformation, most dramatically by landing new designated players Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil — two international talents that LAFC also had in its sights. “I give Will and the group up there a ton of credit,” Vanney said. “It’s one thing to have players you like, and it’s a whole other thing to get them here and get them to connect with your group.” Pec and Paintsil combined for 32 goals and 27 assists while boosting the incumbent talents of striker Dejan Joveljic and Riqui Puig, the gifted Barcelona product who runs the offense from the midfield. The Galaxy clicked in the postseason, scoring a jaw-dropping 16 goals in four matches. Puig has been the Galaxy's most important player all season, but he won't be in the MLS Cup Final after tearing a knee ligament late in last week's conference final victory over Seattle . The loss of Puig — who somehow kept playing on his injured knee, and even delivered the game-winning pass to Joveljic — makes the Galaxy even more difficult to anticipate. “He played a lot in the regular season, so it was not so easy to analyze all these games now without him,” Schwarz said. “But the main focus is to analyze what we need to do, because it’s not clear now how they’re playing without him.” The Galaxy could give some of Puig's responsibilities to Marco Reus, the longtime Dortmund standout who joined LA in August. Reus is nursing a hamstring injury, but Vanney expects him to play. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/soccerIs Canada running out of time to make its buildings net zero?
DEERFIELD — On Dec. 1, 1949, WKTV made history as it aired its first broadcast, becoming the 93rd television station in the United States to go on the air. Perched at the top of Smith Hill Road in Deerfield, the station has been a steadfast presence in the Mohawk Valley, bringing news, weather, and entertainment to local viewers for 75 years. WKTV originally was affiliated with all four networks in operation at the time: NBC, ABC, CBS, and DuMont. Its affiliations changed over time, as DuMont ceased operations, ABC became affiliated with the competing local station WUTR, and CBS went to a Syracuse station before joining WKTV again. For 75 years, WKTV has kept its NBC affiliation, becoming one of the oldest stations in the NBC family. While WKTV is best known today for its local news coverage, the station aired a variety of entertainment shows in its early years. Longtime WKTV viewers have fond memories of productions like cooking shows with Jean Phair, “High School Quiz” with Lyle Bosley, and the daily after-school show with Bozo the Clown. Local entertainment productions ended by the 1970s, as the station shifted its focus to local news. Alongside local print media, WKTV joined the ranks to become a staple of local journalism, as the station covered some of the biggest local news stories that affected the community over the past 75 years. Steve McMurray, vice president and general manager of WKTV, noted that the station allowed the community to see the changes as they were happening, and that it’s the “biggest role the station has played and will continue to play as it goes forward.” “We always treat this as the community’s TV station. There’s a level of responsibility that goes with that, to give folks what they need and give them what they deserve. That’s a very humbling and daunting job, but it’s an incredibly rewarding one, as well,” McMurray said. “News isn’t always positive, but we certainly have the community’s best interests at heart.” From Jerry Fiore, to Bill Worden, as well as Jason Powles and Kristen Copeland, the station’s 75 years saw numerous reporters and anchors who became the face of local news across the Mohawk Valley. Outside of the region, WKTV is known for kickstarting the television career of Dick Clark, as the station was his first television job. Then known as Dick Clay, he left WKTV in 1952 for a job in Philadelphia and later became the host of “American Bandstand,” putting Clark in the national spotlight and earning the nickname “world’s oldest teenager.” In an era of emerging and advancing technology, the station has adapted to meet the needs of multiple generations who consume content through different mediums. While most of WKTV’s history involves broadcasting the news to people’s televisions, the station’s newscasts and coverage are also consumed online through livestreaming and social media. “You don’t survive and flourish 75 years by doing the same thing all the time. We have to position ourselves for the future and be able to pivot at a moment’s notice,” McMurray said. “I think for us, the content is always going to be king. The traditional legacy television numbers are still strong, but we have a lot more folks that are now getting us via social media and our digital media options. Now we’re in the streaming world. Our mantra going forward is going to have to be give our viewers and our consumers the product that they want on the platforms that they desire to get it on.” The station’s newscast schedule airs weekdays from 5 to 7 a.m., noon to 1 p.m., 5 to 6 p.m., 6 to 6:30 p.m., 10 to 10:30 p.m., and 11 to 11:35 p.m. The newscast schedule airs on weekends from 9 to 10 a.m., 6 to 6:30 p.m., and 11 to 11:30 p.m.Injuries pile up, 49ers uncertain QB Brock Purdy can return Sunday
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States on Thursday offered a $5 million reward for information about an alleged scheme in which North Korean technology workers got jobs at unsuspecting U.S. companies then stole their trade secrets for ransom, with the proceeds used to fund Pyongyang’s weapons programs. The U.S. State Department said about 130 North Korean workers got IT jobs at U.S. companies and nonprofits from 2017 to 2023 and generated at least $88 million that Pyongyang used for weapons of mass destruction. Part of the total was the workers’ compensation from the employers, which ultimately went to the North Korean government, the U.S. said. The companies were not identified. The North Korea mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The State Department said in a statement it sought information on two sanctioned North Korean companies — China-based Yanbian Silverstar Network Technology and Russia-based Volasys Silverstar — that it said handled the workers. The U.S. Department of Justice separately on Thursday announced indictments of 14 North Koreans accused of operating and working for the two companies as part of the scheme. Operating from either China or Russia, the workers stole sensitive company information, including proprietary source computer code, and threatened to leak it unless the employer made an extortion payment, the government said. The 14 people were charged with wire fraud, money laundering and identity theft among other offenses. “To prop up its brutal regime, the North Korean government directs IT workers to gain employment through fraud, steal sensitive information from U.S. companies and siphon money back to the DPRK,” Deputy U.S. Attorney General Lisa Monaco said in a statement, using an acronym for the North Korean state. The people and their unnamed associates used the stolen identities of hundreds of Americans to get hired under the scheme, the government said. People in the U.S. aided the scheme by purchasing laptops or receiving laptops from U.S. employers for the fraudulent workers. The Justice Department has obtained indictments of Americans accused of operating so-called laptop farms in recent months. One North Korean IT defector told Reuters in November 2023 that he would try to get hired and then create additional fake social media profiles to secure more jobs.Fox News' Trey Gowdy and Andrew McCarthy unpack the debates surrounding President Biden's pardon of son Hunter and President-elect Trump picking Kash Patel to head the FBI on 'Special Report.' President-elect Trump announced last week that he intends to nominate former White House aide and longtime ally Kash Patel to serve as FBI director, potentially making him the only U.S. president to have fired and installed two separate FBI directors in the middle of their 10-year terms. "Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending Justice, and protecting the American People," Trump said in a social media post announcing his intent to nominate Patel for FBI director. "He played a pivotal role in uncovering the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, standing as an advocate for truth, accountability, and the Constitution." Patel is a close ally of the president-elect and served in the first Trump administration both as a deputy assistant and as the senior director for counterterrorism. He was endorsed on Friday by the National Police Association, which praised Patel's record of "transparency" and "accountability" that it said makes him well-positioned to head up the nation's sprawling law enforcement agency. KASH PATEL: MILLEY, BIDEN ADMIN ‘PEDDLING FALSE FACTS’ ON CHINA PHONE-CALL CONTROVERSY President-elect Trump nominated Kash Patel as FBI director over the weekend. (Getty Images) Still, news of Trump's plans to nominate Patel was met with criticism — if not shock — from others in the law enforcement community. That's because replacing a sitting FBI director is a controversial move that breaks with the express purpose of the role, which, under post-Watergate laws, mandated that directors are nominated for 10-year terms: an express length of time designed to allow the directors — at least in theory — to operate outside political pressure or interference from a sitting president. Trump sent shock waves through the law enforcement community in 2017 when he fired then-FBI Director James Comey, who at the time was less than four years into his 10-year term. Trump also personally selected current FBI Director Christopher Wray — whom he praised at the time as a "fierce guardian of the law and model of integrity" — to replace him. For Trump to install Patel as FBI director, two things must happen: Wray must exit the job, and Patel must earn Senate confirmation. How Wray will leave remains unclear. He could opt to voluntarily vacate the position on his own before Trump's inauguration, though he has not yet said whether he plans to do so. If Wray does not voluntarily vacate his position, Trump could be the only president in U.S. history to have fired and installed two separate FBI directors. (Sarah Silbiger/Pool via Reuters) Patel must also be confirmed by the Senate, though it is likely that the Republican-led chamber will move to approve him for the role. Patel's nomination has sparked early criticism from some Democrats ahead of his confirmation hearing, who have cited his previous vows to prosecute journalists and career officials at the Justice Department and FBI that he sees as being part of the "deep state." He has since attempted to clarify some of those remarks. Injuries pile up, 49ers uncertain QB Brock Purdy can return SundayViper Energy stock soars to all-time high of $56.08Europe's main stock markets were little changed Thursday despite interest rate cuts by the eurozone and Swiss central banks as policymakers warned of economic and political woes in the region and beyond. Wall Street shares pulled back a day after the tech-heavy Nasdaq topped 20,000 points for the first time. The Paris CAC 40 index ended the day flat while the Frankfurt DAX added 0.1 percent after the European Central Bank (ECB) cut its interest rates by 25 basis points, marking its third consecutive reduction and fourth this year overall. ECB President Christine Lagarde said policymakers discussed political "uncertainty" in Europe and the United States before deciding on the cut. She mentioned "political situations in some of the member states" and the US presidential election won by Donald Trump. Lagarde warned that the eurozone economy was "losing momentum" and that "the risk of greater friction in global trade could weigh on euro area growth". Earlier, the Swiss National Bank surprised markets with a 50-basis-point reduction in its rate, citing slowing inflation and uncertainty over the impact of Trump's economic policies and Europe's political upheaval. The franc fell against the dollar and the euro following the announcement. With growth still weak and France and Germany in political crises there have been calls for the ECB to move faster. Germany is heading towards early elections in February following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition government as Europe's biggest economy falters. In France, President Emmanuel Macron is due to appoint a new prime minister after MPs toppled the government of Michel Barnier last week. Sylvain Broyer, an economist at S&P Global Ratings, said Europe was suffering from "a real crisis of confidence whose roots run deep and go beyond economic factors". "The ECB must react and speed up the pace of rate cuts, unless low confidence derails the nascent recovery and jeopardizes the return to price stability," he said. Investors are also focused on the US Federal Reserve's own interest rate decision next week. Consumer inflation data on Wednesday was in line with expectations as it inched slightly higher in November to 2.7 percent. But figures on Thursday showed US wholesale inflation also ticked higher in November. Nonetheless, futures markets continued to show high confidence the Fed will still cut interest rates next week. But there are concerns that measures pledged by Trump to slash taxes and regulations and ramp up tariffs could reignite price increases. In Asia, Hong Kong and Shanghai rallied amid hopes that leaders in China will unveil more help for the economy, which is struggling under the weight of weak consumer spending and a chronic property crisis.
