WASHINGTON — Federal prosecutors moved Monday to dismiss the criminal charges against President-elect Donald Trump that accused him of plotting to overturn the 2020 election and to abandon the classified documents case against him, citing longstanding Justice Department policy that says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. RYE COVE – Ninth District Congressman Morgan Griffith announced a few days ago he was coming to Rye Cove High School Friday to engage with students. The approximately 290 students engaged him in the school gym for an hour with several questions on his positions on national; and world affairs. “If I talk about what I think is interesting, 90% of you will fall asleep,” Griffith told the students before the questions began. ”If I answer questions you find interesting, only 80% of you will fall asleep.” Several students in the bleachers remained awake, asking Griffith his view of the Ukraine situation, gasoline prices, gay marriage, abortion, immigration, Elon Musk, TikTok, Griffith’s salary and Donald Trump. Griffith said he supported funding munitions for Ukraine’s fight against Russie, citing how older munitions from armed forces’ stocks were being sent to Ukraine and replaced with newer ammo supplies. He said he opposed funding for items such as money for the country’s retirement system, however, claiming that Ukraine is ”run by oligarchs, much like Russia Funding Ukraine’s military needs sends a message to Russia about its expansion and to China and its desire to occupy Taiwan, said Griffith. To the applause of several students in the gym bleachers, Griffith said he was pro-life on abortion and a strong Second Amendment supporter. Asked about his stance on gay marriage, Griffith said he disagreed with some U.S. Supreme Court decisions on the issue. On TikTok, Griffith said there was not sufficient privacy separation between the popular social media platform’s American operations and user data when it came to mainland China’s oversight of TikTok’s data access in that country. Selling the platform and removing Chinese control would help protect American users’ personal data, he said. Griffith said he supported legal immigration based on what skill sets immigrants could provide to American society. He added that he supports construction of a border wall, saying it is not perfect but helps shift and control illegal border crossing attempts. “Anybody we know who’s committed a serious crime, they’re on the list,” Griffith said of deportation. Asked if he met Donald Trump, Griffith got another round of applause when he said yes. “I wouldn’t say we’re close personal friends,” Griffith added, “but we know each other.” Griffith said he has disagreed not as much with things Trump has said as with how he said them. He cited an instance where Trump hosted a coal company delegation at the White House. After the meeting ended, the press had left and Griffith was waiting for a ride back to the Capitol, he said he saw Trump invite some miners in to see the Oval Office. “That’s the Donald Trump I’m proud to know and to have supported,” Griffith said. Asked about gas prices going down when Trump takes office in January, Griffith said, “In the next two or three weeks? No. In the next two or three years? Yes.” Griffith claimed energy policies during President Biden’s term have lowered the nation’s capacity to produce electric power, and that may mean higher electric prices for consumers. The American Red Cross of Utah celebrated Cyerra’s efforts in a press release, calling her efforts to bring lifesaving donations to patients in critical need “extraordinary.” Cyerra said she started donating blood her sophomore year of high school and found it to be a rewarding experience. Since then, she donates regularly and considers it a passion. “Hosting the blood drive was my way of making a meaningful impact,” Cyerra said. “I wanted to reach more people and inspire them to join this lifesaving effort. My hope was to ignite that same passion in others and show them how powerful giving can be.” Cyerra hosted her blood drive on July 24, Pioneer Day. The Leaders Save Lives program empowers high school and college students to organize blood drives during school breaks. “This unique initiative not only gives students a chance to save lives but also helps them develop leadership skills and earn scholarships,” stated the press release. “Cyerra’s achievement highlights how young leaders can inspire change and make an impact.” Leaders Save Lives encourages students to host blood drives during key collection periods, such as school holidays, when blood donations are often critically needed. The warrants, and Israel’s refusal to honour them or recognise the legitimacy of the UN court, will increase the country’s political isolation internationally over a war that began after the horrific massacre of Israeli civilians by Hamas and is now almost universally seen as being conducted using disproportionate means. More than 43,000 Gazans are believed to have been killed, while the flattened territory is teetering on the verge of famine. The ICC warrants, sought since May by the court’s chief prosecutor, target Netanyahu, recently fired Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant, and a leader of Hamas, Muhammad Deif, who may have been killed in an Israeli attack. Two other former Hamas leaders, Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Hanniyeh, were also sought but both have been killed by Israeli forces. Israel appears determined not to surrender Netanyahu or Gallant and continues to maintain that the court has no jurisdiction as Israel is not one of the 124 signatory states to the Rome Statute which established the ICC and confers legal authority on it. But the State of Palestine, recognised as such by the UN, and more recently by Ireland, is a signatory – it signed up in January 2015 despite vigorous Israeli protests – and the court has already found that its jurisdiction does extend to considering acts by Israel’s forces in a foreign signatory state, such as Gaza and the West Bank. The court yesterday firmly rejected Israel’s contention to the contrary and the idea that a state can buck the rule of law, particularly international humanitarian law related to armed conflict, by opting out of its collective enforcement. Importantly, the court has not pronounced on Netanyahu’s guilt, only that there are reasonable cases to answer on charges that include impeding humanitarian aid, restricting access for relief operations and using hunger as a weapon of war. Because of lack of evidence, the court considered only two cases of attacks directed against civilians, but found that both men bear criminal responsibility as civilian superiors for the war crime of intentionally directing attacks against the civilian population of Gaza. Netanyahu has behaved for years with impunity, as if he will never have to answer for his actions, whether in the conduct of war or in the face of long-standing criminal charges of corruption. Over the past decade, three Intamin Accelerator coasters have been relocated, one has been closed and two are currently “standing but not operating” — Roller Coaster Database’s version of the disabled list. “Over time, I believe we’ve seen just about every one of these coasters shut down for an extended period of time to repair the launch systems,” according to Screamscape’s Lance Hart. Formula Rossa has been closed since January to repair the launch system — a process that can take a year or more, according to Screamscape. Cedar Point closed Top Thrill Dragster for the entire 2022 and 2023 seasons after a metal piece flew off the ride and seriously injured a woman waiting in the attraction queue in 2021. The rechristened Top Thrill 2 replaced the Intamin hydraulic launch system with a Zamperla electro-magnetic propulsion launch system in May — but the ride only operated for about a week before the park closed the coaster again due to mechanical issues. Intamin produced 14 of the lightning fast rides between 2002 and 2010. “These systems were a bit finicky, heavy on the maintenance side,” according to Screamscape. “It was typically a matter of ‘when’ the launch system was going to crap out unexpectedly. The repair process was always a lengthy and expensive one, so it was no surprise when Intamin decided to retire the launch system for good.” Related links A few of the aging thrill rides have received new leases on life with state-of-the-art updates. Zamperla removed the old hydraulic launch systems and installed new magnetic launches on Top Thrill Dragster at Ohio’s Cedar Point and ThunderVolt at Canada’s Playland. The Pentagon confirmed the missile was a new, experimental type of intermediate-range missile based on its RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile. Thursday's attack struck the Pivdenmash plant that built ICBMs when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. The military facility is located about 4 miles southwest of the center of Dnipro, a city of about 1 million that is Ukraine’s fourth-largest and a key hub for military supplies and humanitarian aid, and is home to one of the country’s largest hospitals for treating wounded soldiers from the front before their transfer to Kyiv or abroad. Still, how it happens—and when—can point to a historical moment defined by the scientific advancements and public health programs available at the time to contain disease and prevent accidents. In the early 1900s, America's efforts to improve sanitation, hygiene, and routine vaccinations were still in their infancy. Maternal and infant mortality rates were high, as were contagious diseases that spread between people and animals. Combined with the devastation of two World Wars—and the Spanish Flu pandemic in between—the leading causes of death changed significantly after this period. So, too, did the way we diagnose and control the spread of disease. Starting with reforms as part of Roosevelt's New Deal in the 1930s, massive-scale, federal interventions in the U.S. eventually helped stave off disease transmission. It took comprehensive government programs and the establishment of state and local health agencies to educate the public on preventing disease transmission. Seemingly simple behavioral shifts, such as handwashing, were critical in thwarting the spread of germs, much like discoveries in medicine, such as vaccines, and increased access to deliver them across geographies. Over the course of the 20th century, life expectancy increased by 56% and is estimated to keep increasing slightly, according to an annual summary of vital statistics published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2000. Death Records examined data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to see how the leading causes of death in America have evolved over time and to pinpoint how some major mortality trends have dropped off. Smith Collection/Gado // Getty Images According to a report published in the journal Annual Review of Public Health in 2000, pneumonia was the leading cause of death in the early 1900s, accounting for nearly 1 in 4 deaths. By the time World War I ended in 1918, during which people and animals were housed together for long periods, a new virus emerged: the Spanish Flu. Originating in a bird before spreading to humans, the virus killed 10 times as many Americans as the war. Many died of secondary pneumonia after the initial infection. Pneumonia deaths eventually plummeted throughout the century, partly prevented by increased flu vaccine uptake rates in high-risk groups, particularly older people. Per the CDC, tuberculosis was a close second leading cause of death, killing 194 of every 10,000 people in 1900, mainly concentrated in dense urban areas where the infection could more easily spread. Eventually, public health interventions led to drastic declines in mortality from the disease, such as public education, reducing crowded housing, quarantining people with active disease, improving hygiene, and using antibiotics. Once the death rates lagged, so did the public health infrastructure built to control the disease, leading to a resurgence in the mid-1980s. Diarrhea was the third leading cause of death in 1900, surging every summer among children before the impacts of the pathogen died out in 1930. Adopting water filtration, better nutrition, and improved refrigeration were all associated with its decline. In the 1940s and 1950s, polio outbreaks killed or paralyzed upward of half a million people worldwide every year. Even at its peak, polio wasn't a leading cause of death, it was a much-feared one, particularly among parents of young children, some of whom kept them from crowded public places and interacting with other children. By 1955, when Jonah Salk discovered the polio vaccine, the U.S. had ended the "golden age of medicine." During this period, the causes of mortality shifted dramatically as scientists worldwide began to collaborate on infectious disease control, surgical techniques, vaccines, and other drugs. Death Records From the 1950s onward, once quick-spreading deadly contagions weren't prematurely killing American residents en masse, scientists also began to understand better how to diagnose and treat these diseases. As a result, Americans were living longer lives and instead succumbing to noncommunicable diseases, or NCDs. The risk of chronic diseases increased with age and, in some cases, was exacerbated by unhealthy lifestyles. Cancer and heart disease shot up across the century, increasing 90-fold from 1900 to 1998, according to CDC data. Following the post-Spanish Flu years, heart disease killed more Americans than any other cause, peaking in the 1960s and contributing to 1 in 3 deaths. Cigarette smoking rates peaked at the same time, a major risk factor for heart disease. Obesity rates also rose, creating another risk factor for heart disease and many types of cancers. This coincides with the introduction of ultra-processed foods into diets, which plays a more significant role in larger waistlines than the increasing predominance of sedentary work and lifestyles. In the early 1970s, deaths from heart disease began to fall as more Americans prevented and managed their risk factors, like quitting smoking or taking blood pressure medicine. However, the disease remains the biggest killer of Americans. Cancer remains the second leading cause of death and rates still indicate an upward trajectory over time. Only a few types of cancer are detected early by screening, and some treatments for aggressive cancers like glioblastoma—the most common type of brain cancer—have also stalled, unable to improve prognosis much over time. In recent years, early-onset cancers, those diagnosed before age 50 or sometimes even earlier, have seen a drastic rise among younger Americans. While highly processed foods and sedentary lifestyles may contribute to rising rates, a spike in cancer rates among otherwise healthy young individuals has baffled some medical professionals. This follows the COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2020. At its peak, high transmission rates made the virus the third leading cause of death in America. It's often compared to the Spanish Flu of 1918, though COVID-19 had a far larger global impact, spurring international collaborations among scientists who developed a vaccine in an unprecedented time. Public policy around issues of safety and access also influences causes of death, particularly—and tragically—among young Americans. Gun control measures in the U.S. are far less stringent than in peer nations; compared to other nations, however, the U.S. leads in gun violence. Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens (around 2 in 3 are homicides, and 1 in 3 are suicides), and deaths from opioids remain a leading cause of death among younger people. Globally, the leading causes of death mirror differences in social and geographic factors. NCDs are primarily associated with socio-economic status and comprise 7 out of 10 leading causes of death, 85% of those occurring in low- and middle-income countries, according to the World Health Organization. However, one of the best health measures is life expectancy at birth. People in the U.S. have been living longer lives since 2000, except for a slight dip in longevity due to COVID-19.
