Mine planners are frequently asked to generate a series of schedules which represent strategies for their businesses under varying market conditions. These conditions are often represented by some kind of informed commodity price forecast, though it is not my intention to discuss price forecasts here. However, for these given forecasts, I would like to show how modelling a more comprehensive options costing framework can have a meaningful impact on the strategy for a mine. In this case, mine planners who use the traditional simple OPEX-based costing model may decide that it is more economic to shut down one or more parts of the operation for the period of decline. This is because the traditional approach has no penalty associated with shutting down, except the opportunity cost captured in the discount rate. However, shutting down infrastructure (as well as re-starting it in future periods) has a cost, and this cost should be considered in addition to business-as-usual outlays when deciding whether or not to shut down. An Example To illustrate this situation I have developed an example of an open pit mine faced with a series of possible pessimistic future conditions. These conditions are represented by four different forecasts for copper over a ten year period: For each forecast, we must determine the strategy for the business: whether to operate, shut down or choose some combination of the two. The Methodology I modeled this example using an integrated optimization approach. The cut-off grade and material destinations of the mine are not pre-defined as the optimization will determine them based on the economic conditions and operating constraints (including a maximum milling constraint). There is no stockpiling in this model. A constant 10% discount rate is applied to calculate the net present value. I modelled the fixed costing environment using six possible operating options for each period, the combination of which forms the operating strategy of the business for each ten year scenario. I associated scalable tonnage and mining activities with variable costs (e.g.: pcost is in $/tonne, haulage cost is in $/hour, etc.). The key to this method is to include the fixed period-based cost options (e.g.: costs of shutting down, operating and restarting) in addition to the operational-based unit costing elements for each scenario as inputs into the optimization. To find the combinations of options which form the schedule with the highest NPV, I solved the problem with global optimization, which considers all periods simultaneously. The selection of the optimum option combination is accomplished within the optimization itself, and not as a post-scheduling cash flow evaluation. Sometimes in strategic mine plans, we “do nothing” to avoid any type of fixed costs, but this isn’t possible in real life, so it shouldn’t be an option for our mine plan. The Results Finding the optimal schedule using a global optimization is not straightforward. This is because the periodic variability in each of the price profiles must be leveraged, together with the known fixed cost options, to deliver the schedule with the maximum NPV. The following chart shows the periods when the mine should be shut down in order to maximize NPV; square markers reveal the periods for shutdown for each scenario. The worst case scenario (F2), demonstrated by a continuous 10% price regression, indicates that the mine and mill should persist operating until the price falls below $3500/t (YR7) and remain closed as the price continues to fall. The short term recession/slow recovery scenario (F3) indicates the best strategy for the business under these conditions is a single period mine and mill shut-down when the price falls below $4500/t (YR3), followed by continuous operations beyond. The medium term recession/aggressive recovery scenario (F4) indicates that the best strategy for the business is a mine and mill closure for the three lowest price years when the price falls below $4000/t (YR4-YR6), then resume operating in YR7 as the price recovers. Comparison with the Traditional OPEX-based Approach To confirm my methodology, I decided to compare my results with results using the traditional OPEX-based approach. If I took the shutdown costs out of the optimization process, what would the schedules look like? For all four forecasts, I modelled the same scenarios again with variable costs (only). But this time, the costs are only incurred during active periods of mining and processing, which is similar to the way many traditional models are set up. Here’s what happened: The results indicate that for the traditional approach there are additional shutdown periods (indicated by triangles), confirming that solving without the shutdown costs penalty directly affects the schedule results for this example mine. Summary This simple study only scratches the surface of this topic, however, it demonstrates how an additional, defined options framework for fixed costing (such as shutdown and restart costs) can significantly influence your strategic schedule. In general, when you add more information to the framework for your decision, you will get a more realistic result. The traditional approach lacks this framework and does not consider all factors when optimizing the schedule. This incomplete scenario may mislead you into following a flawed strategy of shutting down for longer periods of time, and ultimately missing out on value that is crucial in challenging economic times. The mother called the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) and the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office Dec. 23 after she heard "a loud noise in the home" and discovered the raccoon attacking her baby boy, Idaho Fish and Game shared in a release. Authorities said the mother managed to grab the furry intruder to save her son. According to officials, a sheriff’s deputy returned to the home with the baby's father, located the animal and killed it. "Raccoons can live in a variety of habitats, but an area with access to water and food will attract them. But it counts just the same, and Philly's 13th win of the season assures they won't need to worry about getting a 14th as their playoff fate has now been sealed. Here's a look at a player whose stock is back on the rise, and a reason for Eagles fans to lament a bit after a very convincing win on an unseasonably warm December afternoon: Stock up: 📈 Chauncey Gardner-Johnson Last week, the Eagles lost to the Commanders for two main reasons (no disrespect to Jayden Daniels and his epic performance): Jalen Hurts left in the first quarter with a concussion, and Gardner-Johnson was ejected in the third quarter after his second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The Eagles' thinness at the safety position directly contributed to their inability to stop the Washington passing game. If they're not suffocating offenses at the line of scrimmage or sticking to opposing wide receivers like gloves, they're creating big plays and turnovers. This kind of play could keep them on the field deep into January (or February). Stock down: 📉 Saquon Barkley's rushing record Hoisted with their own petard. The Eagles locked up the NFC East crown, as well as the NFC's 2-seed throughout the postseason. Which means that there is almost no chance any big name starters will see the field next week against the Giants in a totally meaningless Week 18 game in South Philly. (The only circumstance that would see the Eagles with a reason to play in Week 18 is both the Lions and Vikings losing later this weekend. If they both lost there would be a shot at the 1-seed.) Which means that Barkley's epic, unforgettable season will probably end, with the running back at 2,005 yards for the 2024 regular season. He'll fall an even 100 yards short of Eric Dickerson's all-time rushing record after a 23-yard fourth quarter scamper made him the NFL's ninth ever 2,000 yard rusher. With the fanfare, handshakes and hugs after the run that got him to the 2k mark, it seemed like a fitting end to Barkley's regular season. While the 1984 record is painfully within reach, 100 yards would require Barkley to play the majority, if not all of Week 18, and the risk of injury is too great for a team with Super Bowl aspirations. Ironically, Barkley's 16 games played are right on par with the record he was chasing — as many were critical that he could theoretically be eclipsing the mark with an extra 17th game played. Dickerson set his record on 379 carries, while Barkley had 345 carries. If he had the same number of rushing attempts as Dickerson he'd be the record holder. In Sunday's win against Dallas, everything appeared to be going wrong for the running back early, as he was stuffed near the line of scrimmage repeatedly, collecting just 25 yards on his first 12 carries. But he turned it around, looking like his old shifty spry self, finishing with 167 rushing yards in the game. It was nice to see Barkley able to post solid numbers on the ground without Hurts under center. It is expected that the starting quarterback will return for the Wild card playoff round on the second weekend in January, when the Eagles host the No. 7 seed in the NFC. The transformation will also improve technology adoption rates among staff, aided by comprehensive digital literacy training. Dr Gray pointed out that early indications of success are already visible. “Even now, we are seeing small wins,” he noted, citing efforts to reduce paper usage as an example. “Currently, the organisation’s client service delivery process uses over 1,000,000 sheets of paper each year. By digitising this process, paper usage will be reduced to approximately 800,000 sheets by the end of the financial year,” he said. “When you consider that each sheet of paper costs $15.00, this reduction will save us over $18 million, resulting in the organisation saving approximately $260 million by reducing printing need over the next four years,” Dr Gray added. He also addressed concerns about job displacement due to automation, assuring stakeholders that jobs will be repositioned for greater efficiency. “These roles can evolve to focus on more productive activities, as we move forward with digital transformation,” he said. Gabbard ignored shouted questions about her 2017 visit to war-torn Syria as she ducked into one of several private meetings with senators who are being asked to confirm Trump’s unusual nominees . True freshman Luke Kromenhoek threw three touchdown passes and Caziah Holmes ran for two more as host Florida State routed Charleston Southern 41-7 on Saturday afternoon in Tallahassee, Fla. The Seminoles (2-9) convincingly snapped a six-game losing streak and ensured that the Buccaneers (1-11) would finish theirs on a 10-game skid. Florida State has not had much to celebrate during one of its worst seasons in program history. But on Saturday, the Seminoles overcame a rough start and put together one of their more complete efforts of the season. Florida State had not scored more than 21 points in a game prior to Saturday's contest and its 175 rushing yards more than doubled its average (80.5 per game) this season. No single runner had over 40 yards, but seven rushers combined for that output on 34 attempts. The Seminoles entered the game ranked 130th out of 133 FBS teams in rushing offense. Holmes, a senior, finished with three carries for 38 yards, including touchdown runs of 3 and 18 yards. Kromenhoek gave Florida State a sliver of hope for its quarterback future as he completed 13 of 20 passes for 209 yards and no interceptions. He threw TD passes for Amaree Williams, Ja'Khi Douglas and Hykeem Williams. The highlight was a 71-yard touchdown pass to Douglas on the first play from scrimmage of the second half to put the Seminoles ahead 24-0.
