Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on his supporters to remain calm in the face of confrontation and provocation from his enemies. Mr Fubara, who made the appeal during the 7th anniversary of the kingship installation of Eze Cassidy Ikegbidi, a politician-turned-traditional ruler of the Akoh people in Ahoada East Local Government Area, said when the time is right, the people of the state will know “who is who”. “Let’s ignore the noise some people are making. When the time is right, we will know who is who. “So don’t worry about anything. It is God that has led us from that day till today, and each day we get stronger and stronger. It is only God,” Mr Fubara said. “We are not achieving all this because of our strength or because we are boasting. It is because our strength is built in God. “So, we don’t need to worry about what people are saying. Let the time come, and we will see how it will end.” The governor attributed his survival from the political antics to divine providence and noted that his administration continues to grow stronger despite the expectations of detractors. He urged the people of Akoh to embrace peace, emphasising that development can only thrive in a harmonious environment. “The most important thing is that we must ensure we live peacefully. Development cannot come to your kingdom, and development cannot come to the Ekpeye Ethnic Nationality without peace. “There will be many attempts to bring disunity among you. Try as much as you can to avoid it.” “You know the mechanism of those people: ‘Divide and Rule.’ Try to avoid anything that will bring problems to this kingdom so that we can continue to show that we love you by ensuring we bring meaningful projects that will bring development to the Ekpeye people.” Mr Fubara also commended the traditional ruler for his support and contributions to the success of the administration. The passive delivered by high-yielding (ASX: XJO) stocks can make a tremendous difference to your accumulated returns over time. Especially if you opt to reinvest those dividends. To get an idea of just how important dividends are to the overall returns from the benchmark index, just take a look at the (ASX: XJT). This index includes all cash dividends paid out by ASX 200 dividend stocks and reinvested on the date. Over the past five years, the ASX 200 has returned a healthy 26.0%. The Total Return Index, on the other hand, has returned 52.1%. Now, after a bumper year in FY 2023, dividend payments from Aussie stocks have come down in FY 2024. Lower payouts from the mining and energy sectors, mirroring the retrace in commodity prices, drove a big part of that retrace. The question facing passive income investors now is, what can we expect in 2025? Darren Thompson is the head of asset management at Equity Trustees Asset Management. Discussing the 2025 Australian equity market outlook, Thompson cautions that many top ASX 200 dividend stocks are likely to deliver lower payouts in FY 2025. He expects overall market earnings to be flat to down compared to FY 2024. And overall dividends to be "slightly down" year on year. On the macro picture, he notes: In Australia, although we have some wonderful global businesses, economically we are more leveraged to domestic drivers and a weakening China story than the stronger US economic thematic. If you've been investing in ASX 200 dividend stocks, you've most likely bought at least some of the big Aussie banks and mining companies. Indeed, if you're building a diversified passive income portfolio, I'd say they're an essential component. Meaning their FY 2025 performance will be key to the overall market returns. "The outlook for both earnings and dividends for the domestic market is heavily weighted to the performance of banks and resources," Thompson said. As for the big banks like ( ), ( ), ( ), and ( ), he noted: Bank earnings are anticipated to be broadly flat due to a combination of modest credit growth, ongoing competition restricting net interest margins, ongoing cost pressures and already cyclically low bad debt provisions. Thompson said he expects to see lower dividend payouts coming from ASX 200 dividend stocks in the resources sector in the year ahead, "reflecting the pullback in earnings and cashflows for ( ), ( ) and ( ) due to low iron ore prices". He added: These companies remain highly profitable, cash generative business. It is simply that iron ore prices have continued to retrace from previous cyclical highs, largely due to lower demand from China. With income growth still anticipated among some companies in select sectors, passive income investors will want to make sure to do their research when buying new stocks in 2025. According to Thompson: Many sectors of the Australian market are expected to deliver earnings and dividend growth going forward. However, they are not of sufficient scale to compensate for the impact of the materials and energy sectors. As for the combined outlook for payouts he expects from ASX 200 dividend stocks in FY 2025, he said, "The impact of these factors is such that the Australian equity markets 12-month forward dividend yield is about 3.4%, which is well below the 10-year average."

Political leaders from around the nation are paying tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday at the age of 100. “Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian,’’ President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden said in a statement . “Over six decades, we had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well.” The president, who was a Delaware senator during Carter’s time in the White House, said he is ordering a state funeral for Carter to be held at an indeterminate date in Washington. President-elect Donald Trump expressed his condolences to the Carter family and said the nation owes the 39th president a debt of gratitude. “The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans,” Trump wrote on social media . “While I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our Country, and all it stands for,” the president-elect said in a subsequent post . Many of those paying tribute to Carter lauded his legacy of service after he left the White House as well as his achievements as president. “James Earl Carter, Jr., was a man of deeply held convictions. He was loyal to his family, his community, and his country,’’ former President George W. Bush said in a statement . “President Carter dignified the office. And his efforts to leave behind a better world didn’t end with the presidency. His work with Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Center set an example of service that will inspire Americans for generations.” Bush’s father, the late President George H.W. Bush, was on the 1980 Republican ticket with Ronald Reagan that denied Carter a second term in office. Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recalled meeting Carter in 1975 and said they were early backers of his 1976 presidential campaign. He “worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world,’’ the Clintons said in a statement , citing the late president’s commitment to civil rights as a Georgia governor and state senator, his conservation efforts as president and his post-presidential work promoting democracy and building homes for Habitat for Humanity.. Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama called Carter a “remarkable man” and said he “taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service.” Carter had a complicated relationship with Congress during his rocky singular term as president. But current congressional leaders were effusive in hailing his legacy of service. “May his memory be a blessing and an enduring reminder of what it means to truly serve,” Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said on social media . Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said on social media that Carter’s story “was one of humble beginnings, and his life is a testament to the boundless opportunities available in this great nation.” Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi referenced Carter’s deep faith and how it shaped his commitment to be a force for good in the world. “At the heart of President Carter’s public service was his fervent commitment to honoring the spark of divinity within every person,’’ the California Democrat said on social media . “He always defended that spark: whether teaching Sunday school in his beloved Maranatha Baptist Church, brokering the landmark Camp David Accords to pave the way to peace or building homes with Habitat for Humanity.” “As President, his work to restore integrity to the political arena during a difficult chapter in our history was a testament to his firm faith in the sanctity of the public good, which he always placed above his own,” Pelosi added.NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma appears to have borrowed from the past to cure its recent offensive ills. The Sooners , best known this century for a passing prowess that has produced four Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks, took it back to the 20th century against then-No. 7 Alabama. Oklahoma ran 50 times for 257 yards while only throwing 12 times in a 24-3 win over the Crimson Tide that took coach Brent Venables off the hot seat. The Sooners more resembled Barry Switzer’s squads that dominated the old Big 8 with the wishbone offense in the 1970s and ’80s than the more recent Air Raid teams. Venables said the change was a matter of necessity for a unit that has been besieged by injuries at receiver and offensive line. “I think this staff has done a really good job with trying to figure that out, get better every week, put together a great gameplan but also figure out, ‘OK, what does this group of guys, what does this team — what do we need to do?'” Venables said. To make it work, Oklahoma needed to trust that such a change would work in the modern Southeastern Conference. They had to implement it with an interim play-caller in Joe Jon Finley, who stepped in after the Sooners fired Seth Littrell last month. Oklahoma (6-5, 2-5 SEC) pulled it off, and LSU coach Brian Kelly has taken notice ahead of their game on Saturday. “This is now much more about controlling the football, running the football, playing with physicality," Kelly said. "They've got perimeter skill, but I think it's centered around much more of a run-centric, quarterback run and take care of the football." The Sooners started to see success on the ground against Maine. They ran 52 times for 381 yards in a 59-14 win that got the wheels turning. Jovantae Barnes ran for career highs of 203 yards and three touchdowns that day. Venables said the timing of the opportunity to play that non-conference game against Maine in early November and figure some things out was perfect. “Everybody has some degree of vulnerability and maybe some self-doubt,” he said. “And just developing some confidence and putting something on tape other than practice, like, ‘Man, look, see what you’re capable of?’ And executing against, again, a well-coached team — certainly, we played off of that in all the right ways like you would expect us to. And so there’s a real place for that.” After a bye week, the Sooners tried the same approach against Missouri. It wasn't as successful — they ran 36 times for 122 yards — but they hung tough before losing 30-23 . The Sooners went all in against Alabama. Jackson Arnold — the same guy who threw 45 times in the Alamo Bowl last year, ran 25 times for 131 yards and threw just 11 passes. The Sooners found something in running back Xavier Robinson. With Barnes out with an injury, Robinson carried 18 times for career highs of 107 yards and two touchdowns. Suddenly, a team that had been forcing the pass and getting sacked at an alarming rate was moving the line of scrimmage and controlling the tempo. Oklahoma had the ball for more than 34 minutes against the Crimson Tide, lending support to a talented defense that had been spending way too much time on the field. The new approach could be helpful on Saturday — LSU (7-4, 4-3) ranks 14th out of 16 conference teams against the run. Venables said the Sooners still need to throw the ball well to win, but he's glad to know his squad can run with force when necessary. “I think that’s the art of having a system that’s adjustable, flexible, adaptable, week in and week out, but also has an identity — toughness, physicality," he said. "You’ve got to be able to run the ball at every level of football, but you do have to throw it. You can’t just do one thing. But we need to be efficient.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here .
