Literacy charities claim playing recorded stories during lessons can be “the key to unlocking ”. But critics fear their use risks lowering standards and damaging reading abilities. Primary and secondary schools in England, Wales and Scotland are allowed to play audiobooks in the classroom, where their use is at the discretion of individual teachers. On Monday, it emerged that one black GCSE pupil, 16, had to sit through his classmates’ laughter and stares when an audiobook version of played aloud the slur “n----r” uncensored during an English lesson. The book will be removed from the GCSE curriculum in Wales in September because of its use of the term. On online forums, teachers claim to have played audiobooks in the classroom when they are unwell, to limit disruption and because it can be “exhausting... to read in an emphatic and performative way while managing a class”. Chris McGovern, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, told The Telegraph that the use of audiobooks was “saddening”. “It’s dehumanising a crucial relationship between teacher and pupil,” he said. “The foundation stone of learning is personal contact between pupil and teacher so if a machine is taking over, you are removing that. “It won’t make children better readers. It may be useful on occasion. In the 1950s we used to listen to the radio from time to time and that was an aid to learning. “But in the love of reading. Barrington Stoke, the dyslexia-friendly publisher, says that audiobooks are useful because reading can be “difficult” when children are first learning. “Hearing a story being read – whether it’s via audiobooks or someone reading to you – frees up students’ minds to imagine and to empathise, helping them to step inside a book,” the company wrote in a 2023 article for the BookTrust, the children’s reading charity. Kidman deftly portrays Romy as a woman falling helplessly into an affair; she both knows what she’s doing and doesn’t. Dickinson exudes a disarming intensity; his chemistry with Kidman, despite their quickly forgotten age gap, is visceral. As their affair evolves, Samuel’s sense of control expands and he begins to threaten a call to HR. That he could destroy her doesn’t necessarily make Romy any less interested in seeing him, though there are some delicious post-#MeToo ironies in their clandestine CEO-intern relationship. Also in the mix is Romy’s executive assistant, Esme (Sophie Wilde, also very good), who’s eager for her own promotion. Where “Babygirl” heads from here, I won’t say. But the movie is less interested in workplace politics than it is in acknowledging authentic desires, even if they’re a little ludicrous. There’s genuine tenderness in their meetings, no matter the games that are played. Late in the film, Samuel describes it as “two children playing.” As a kind of erotic parable of control, “Babygirl” is also, either fittingly or ironically, shot in the very New York headquarters of its distributor, A24. For a studio that’s sometimes been accused of having a “house style,” here’s a movie that goes one step further by literally moving in. What about that automation stuff earlier? Well, our collective submission to digital overloads might have been a compelling jumping-off point for the film, but along the way, not every thread gets unraveled in the easily distracted “Babygirl.” Saucers of milk will do that. “Babygirl,” an A24 release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for “strong sexual content, nudity and language.” Running time: 114 minutes. OTTAWA — NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said he won't play Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre's games by voting to bring down the government on an upcoming non-confidence motion. The Conservatives plan to introduce a motion that quotes Singh's own criticism of the Liberals, and asks the House of Commons to declare that it agrees with Singh and has no confidence in the government. The motion is expected to be introduced on Thursday and the debate and vote are set for Monday. Singh said he is not going to trigger an election when he believes Poilievre would cut programs the NDP fought for. "I'm not going to be playing Pierre Poilievre's games. I have no interest in that. We're frankly not going to allow him to cut the things that people need. I want to actually have dental care expanded, I want people to actually start to benefit from the pharmacare legislation we passed," Singh said. With the NDP's expected support, the Liberals should survive this next confidence vote brought forward by the Conservatives. The Tories have vowed to bring forward non-confidence motions every chance they get. The party will have two more opposition motions after this one, which are expected to continue to call for non-confidence. The NDP are scheduled to have their opposition day on Friday.
