top646 app After a far-right pro-Russia candidate secured a surprise lead in Romania's presidential election Monday, the eastern European NATO member is bracing for a high-stakes parliamentary vote on Sunday, amid fears it could bring about a strategic shift in the country. Calin Georgescu was in pole position with almost 23 percent after the first round of voting, a political earthquake in the country of 19 million people that has so far resisted nationalist appeals that have gained traction in Hungary and Slovakia. His victory ahead of centre-right mayor Elena Lasconi -- who scored 19.18 percent -- ended the hopes of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu to compete for the presidency in the December runoff. After coming third at 19.15, Ciolacu said his Social Democratic Party (PSD) won't challenge the narrow result, and announced his resignation as party leader. Experts say the far right's surprise success could affect the parliamentary elections later this week, and even influence the chances of forming a future government. In the runoff ballot on December 8, Lasconi will face Georgescu, a NATO critic who in the past expressed his admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Georgescu's popularity surged ahead of the vote with a viral TikTok campaign calling for an end to aid for Ukraine, which shares a 650-kilometre (400-mile) border with Romania. In a first reaction on his YouTube channel, the 62-year-old independent candidate insisted "there is no East or West", stressing that neutrality was "absolutely necessary". "I am not an extremist, I am not a fascist -- I am a Romanian who loves his country," he said in reference to media reports that "tried to portray" him in a wrongful way. For his rival Lasconi, the upcoming runoff represents "an existential battle", "a historic confrontation" between those who wish to "preserve Romania's young democracy" and those who want to "return to the Russian sphere of influence". "We must not allow anger to throw us back into the past," she said to thunderous applause from her supporters, vowing to stand up for Europe and NATO. The political earthquake comes amid soaring inflation and mounting fears of Romania being potentially dragged into Russia's war in neighbouring Ukraine, as the country has emerged as a key player on the alliance's eastern flank. In Sunday's vote, another far-right contender, AUR party leader George Simion, secured nearly 14 percent. Already pounding the campaign trail for this week's parliamentary elections, Simion said Romania now has "the chance to have a sovereign government and a sovereign president". Overall, the far right won more than a third of all votes in Sunday's presidential ballot. "The far right is by far the big winner of this election," political scientist Cristian Pirvulescu told AFP, predicting a possible "contagion effect" in the parliamentary vote. Extremist forces and Lasconi's centre-right party now have "wind in their sails", sociologist Gelu Duminica said, though "it remains to be seen if they know how to capitalise" on it. The PSD, which has shaped the country's politics for more than three decades, has never before been eliminated in the first round of a presidential election. The National Liberal Party (PNL) party, with whom the PSD currently governs, also suffered a defeat. While many expressed their disbelief over the poll in the streets of the capital Bucharest, others were enthused. Maria Chis, 70, said she was surprised by Georgescu's lead in the first round but had been impressed after watching his TikTok videos. "He seems a man of integrity, serious and patriotic. He inspires seriousness. I think only someone like him can bring change," said the pensioner, who was planning to vote for him in the second round. Alex Tudose, the owner of a construction company, was gloomy. "There is sorrow, disappointment, that after so many years in Euro-Atlantic structures we voted for a pro-Russian by over 20 percent," the 42-year-old said. "There is clearly a strong fragmentation both in society and in the political class, and I think we saw that yesterday," he said. ani-anb-kym/sbk Get any of our free email newsletters — news headlines, sports, arts & entertainment, state legislature, CFD news, and more.MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) — Uruguayans on Sunday voted in the second round of the country's presidential election , with the conservative governing party and a left-leaning coalition locked in a close runoff following level-headed campaigns widely seen as emblematic of the country's strong democracy. As polls closed Sunday evening, turnout stood at 89.4% — around the same as during the first round last month in which the two moderate coalitions both failed to win an outright majority. Voting in Uruguay is compulsory. Depending on how tight the vote turns out to be, electoral officials may not call the race for days — as happened in the contentious 2019 runoff that brought center-right President Luis Lacalle Pou to office and ended 15 years of rule by Uruguay’s left-leaning Broad Front by a razor-thin margin. Álvaro Delgado, the incumbent party’s candidate who won nearly 27% in the first round of voting on Oct. 27, has campaigned under the slogan “re-elect a good government." Other conservative parties that make up the government coalition — in particular, the Colorado Party that came in third place last month — notched 20% of the vote collectively, enough to give Delgado an edge over his challenger. Yamandú Orsi from the Broad Front, who took 44% of the vote in the general election, is promising to forge a “new left” in Uruguay that draws on the memory of stability and economic growth under his Broad Front coalition, which presided over pioneering social reforms that won widespread international acclaim from 2005-2020, including the legalization of abortion, same-sex marriage and sale of marijuana . With inflation easing and the economy expected to expand by some 3.2% this year, according to the International Monetary Fund, surveys show that Uruguayans remain largely satisfied with the administration of Lacalle Pou, who constitutionally cannot run for a second consecutive term. But persistent complaints about sluggish growth, stagnant wages and an upsurge in violent crime could just as easily add the small South American nation to a long list of places this year where frustrated voters have punished incumbents in elections around the world. With most polls showing a virtual tie between Delgado and Orsi, analysts say the vote may hinge on a small group of undecided voters — roughly 10% of registered voters in the nation of 3.4 million people. “Neither candidate convinced me and I feel that there are many in my same situation,” said Vanesa Gelezoglo, 31, in the capital, Montevideo, adding she would make up her mind at “the last minute.” Analysts say the candidates’ lackluster campaigns and broad consensus on key issues have generated extraordinary indecision and apathy in an election dominated by discussions about social spending and concerns over income inequality but largely free of the anti-establishment rage that has vaulted populist outsiders to power in neighboring Argentina and the United States. “The question of whether Frente Amplio (the Broad Front) raises taxes is not an existential question, unlike what we saw in the U.S. with Trump and Kamala framing each other as threats to democracy," said Nicolás Saldías, a Latin America and Caribbean senior analyst for the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit. “That doesn't exist in Uruguay.” Both candidates are also appealing to voter angst over the current government's struggle to stem the rise in violent crime that has shaken a nation long regarded as one of the region’s safest, with Delgado promising tough-on-crime policies and Orsi advocating a more community-oriented approach. Delgado, 55, a rural veterinarian with a long career in the National Party, served most recently as Secretary of the Presidency for Lacalle Pou and promises to pursue his predecessor’s pro-business policies. He would continue pushing for a trade deal with China that has raised hackles in Mercosur, an alliance of South American countries promoting regional commerce. "We have to give the government coalition a chance to consolidate its proposals,” said Ramiro Pérez, a street vendor voting for Delgado on Sunday. Orsi, 57, a former history teacher and two-time mayor from a working-class background, is widely seen as the political heir to former President José “Pepe” Mujica , an ex-Marxist guerilla who became a global icon for helping transform Uruguay into one of the region's most socially liberal and environmentally sustainable nations. “He's my candidate, not only for my sake but also for my children's,” Yeny Varone, a nurse at a polling station, said of Orsi. “In the future they'll have better working conditions, health and salaries.” Mujica, now 89 and recovering from esophageal cancer , turned up at his local polling station before balloting even began, praising Orsi's humility and Uruguay’s famous stability. “This is no small feat,” he said of Uruguay's “citizenry that respects formal institutions.” Orsi planned no dramatic changes, and, despite his call for a revitalized left-wing, his platform continues the Broad Front's traditional mix of market-friendly policies and welfare programs. He proposes tax incentives to lure investment and social security reforms that would lower the retirement age but fall short of a radical overhaul sought by Uruguay's unions. The contentious plebiscite on whether to boost pension payouts failed to pass in October, with Uruguayans rejecting generous pensions in favor of fiscal constraint. Both candidates pledged full cooperation with each other if elected. “I want (Orsi) to know that my idea is to form a government of national unity,” Delgado told reporters after casting his vote in the capital's upscale Pocitos neighborhood. He said that if he won, he and Orsi would chat on Monday over some yerba mate, the traditional herbal drink beloved by Uruguayans. Orsi described Sunday's democratic exercise as “an incredible experience" as he voted in Canelones, the sprawling town of beaches and cattle ranches just north of Montevideo where he served as mayor for a decade. “The essence of politics is agreements,” he said. “You never end up completely satisfied.” Associated Press writer Isabel DeBre in Villa Tunari, Bolivia, contributed to this report.

File photo: NZ Herald By Susan Edmunds of RNZ Anna Hall says, when she's looking to make a big purchase, she'll often wait for sales events like Black Friday, to see if she can get a better discount. So she was surprised to see that an oven she had been looking at, at Smith City, which had previously been for sale at $2399, is now being promoted as on $2719.20 with an alleged recommended retail price of more than $3000. "I was pretty horrified to see they'd put the price up for Black Friday, which seemed bizarre." She says if she had just gone in and taken the price at face value, she might have thought she was getting a good deal. Smiths City says the $2399 promotion has ended and the full RRP of the product is the correct amount. Consumer NZ spokesperson Abby Damen said it was something her organisation hears about relatively often. "Ultimately businesses can charge what they like but they can't mislead you. The line gets super blurry at a time like now when we're rushing towards Christmas. People are financially squeezed and there's so much hype... it can be hard to determine whether that price you're seeing is a good deal." She said specials needed to be a genuine opportunity to save, and for a limited time. Bodo Lang, a marketing expert at Massey University, said it was possible that there could be more Black Friday sales this year, given how tough the environment has been for shops recently. "If retailers cannot sell enough stock in non-sale periods, they will likely double down during sales periods. So we may some 'super sales' for Black Friday and, a little further ahead, Boxing Day sales. "Retailers offering steep discounts will, of course, likely increase consumers' resistance to buying products when they are not on sale, thus potentially worsening retailers' profits. "However, there are exceptions to this, such as retailers who are selling items that have to be bought at a particular time-such as replacing a fridge that has stopped working. For such urgent replacement purchases, which are the minority of purchases we make, consumers won't wait for sales; they are more likely to buy the item when and where they need it," Lang said. "At the other end of the spectrum are items that are not so much needed but wanted. This is likely the majority of purchases that some consumers make. In such cases, retailers' sales promotions will result in additional purchases that otherwise would not have occurred." Gavin Male, chief executive of price comparison site PriceSpy, said people should ask shops to price match items if they saw them cheaper elsewhere. As for Hall, she said it was a good reminder to shoppers to check the discounts offered were really a good price. "It's one thing if it's the same price but to actually make it significantly, like $300 more on the supposed Black Friday sale seems really wrong."London, Dec. 04, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Pixalate, the market-leading ad fraud protection, privacy, and compliance analytics platform, today released the Brazil Programmatic Ad Seller Quality Rankings Q3 2024 for Web and Mobile to rank programmatic ad sellers across desktop and mobile web and mobile apps . Marlena Velez, 22, is accused of using false barcodes to steal 16 items from the budget retailer – valued at about $765. Footage taken on the Florida store’s security cameras show a dark-haired woman wearing glasses, a tan shirt and matching pants leaving the retailer with a trolley loaded with the stolen goods. But after local police shared the photo on social media, it led them to Ms Velez’s TikTok account, where the mum-of-two had posted a video of herself heading to Target “in the same outfit and glasses”, police said. Marlena Velez, 22, was arrested after sharing this video of herself going shopping at Target. Picture: Cape Coral Police Department Police said her outfit and items in the TikTok video matched a CCTV image of a woman who allegedly stole $765 of products from the budget retailer. Picture: Cape Coral Police Department The content creator – who has over 346,000 followers – was arrested and later charged on one count of petty theft. “Sometimes we put out an attempt to identify because the community knows a lot more people than we do, maybe they’re you’re neighbour or you went to high school with them,” a Cape Coral police officer explained. In this case, Target’s loss prevention department had contacted police on October 30 after an unknown female left the store with a selection of homewares and clothing items they had purchased using false barcodes. In a video, police detailed how they were able to charge Ms Velez who is accused of using false barcodes at a self-service checkout. Picture: Cape Coral Police Department “We actually had one person reach out on Instagram who didn’t want to be identified, but provided Ms Velez’s full name, date of birth and her social media handle,” the office continued. “From there we were able to look up her social media and we even found on TikTok that she posted a video that day of herself going to Target, ‘buying’ these items and then taking them home with her. “Everything was documented. Even the outfit she wore and all of that matches with the attempt to identify photograph.” Ms Velez was arrested on November 21 and was released from custody just hours later after paying a $US150 ($230) cash bond according to reports . The popular influencer’s arrest has sparked a huge level of public interest, with many noting her followers had jumped up by almost 50,000 in a matter of hours. Read moreSince the weather was forecast to be pleasant, I thought it might be fun to drive to Boston and walk in The Men’s March. Now did I do this because I support the abolition of abortion, or because I thrive in settings where pandemonium and chaos may ensue? Well ... read my previous works. Apart from the severe profanity, violence, and name-calling, this pro-life march turned out to be the perfect opportunity to witness a modern-day interpretation of the Boston Tea Party. That may be a stretch, but hear me out. In my general understanding of that iconic marker in Massachusetts history, several men of the group engaging in naval, corporate espionage disguised themselves in Mohawk clothing. Taken this to be fact, the reasons they chose to do this could be layered, and our thorough understanding of that event is not necessary for the point at hand. Breaking it down to the simplest of explanations, individuals on that day donned clothes associated with another people. Whether it was coincidence or intentional that they selected Mohawk only the historians can know for sure, but one thing that this act was successful in was entangling one group with another’s grievances. Two parties with a beef, and then an innocent, third party who is more or less trying to maintain an existence honoring community, nature, and spirit in the face of unbridled genocide and extermination. Fast forward a few hundred years and what do we have? The prevalence of the Palestinian keffiyeh among movements which have arguably nothing to do with that ongoing genocide, that’s what. There seemed to be more keffiyehs in the camp of counter-protesters than there were last year in the 25 Mile March for Palestine. With each step I mentally scratched my head and wondered, “is there something connecting Palestinian liberation with the American abortion argument that I’m missing?” Then, I started getting angry. Maybe because as we speak children are waiting for clean water in Gaza wondering what’s taking us so long to stop sending the missiles. “Sorry kids, we need to wait another day because all the keffiyahs need to be at the No-GMO rally.” As well-intentioned as your movement may be, whether it be for a woman’s right to choose, LGBTQIA+ equality, or the elimination of fossil fuels, any inclusion of issues which are not directly associated with the current conflict in question, further complicates (and impedes) the road to peace. Perhaps one of the more unfortunate realities for an entitled population, but I find it frustrating that people could be so self-involved that they would use the destruction of a society as extra ammunition in their never-ending battle with, what could be considered, simply their opposite half. The whole “there is a god” vs “there is not a god” argument was out in full force, with counter-protesters essentially giving those marching exactly what they wanted. A Toys R’ Us world we have become, and who’s to say really when that happened. Any reader even remotely familiar with contemporary American politics could probably describe the typical marcher and the typical counter-protester in about five seconds. These meme-dividuals have been custom-made by their online echo chamber, and the only thing which gives them respite is the fact that their chosen hero is the “real one.” Honestly, it may be this facet of staleness which was the most aggravating to observe. It’s not the fact that each side is pointing to the other and saying “fascist,” and it’s not because each group is pointing to themselves and saying “we’re protecting the innocent,” no. The reason lies more in the reality that neither party has anything new to bring to the discussion. The same argument points and verbal fencing have plagued our society for decades, and I sometimes find it curious that no one raises their hand and asks, “what about our nation is making this an issue to begin with?” As one could imagine, there was no happy resolution at the end of the march. No coming together of opposing parties, and no real plans for how to be victorious in the future. The marchers went home, the protesters went home. Could the whole thing been done just out of habit. Maybe there was unspoken anxiety about family Thanksgiving dinner after the election, and this was the best way to deal with it? Regardless, let me state in closing that anyone who conflates Palestinian liberation with other issues unrelated, is either knowingly or unknowingly, an enemy of that movement. Bashar al-Assad’s downfall came not with a bang but a whimper. The Syrian dictator reportedly fled his home in the wake of a blitzkrieg advance by a coalition of anti-government rebels. Now, he’s gone — leaving armed groups as the country’s dominant political players. A spirit of anti-Assad sentiment surged across Syria, manifesting itself through displays of both celebration and defiance. The question now is whether this unleashed energy — brutally suppressed by fear and authoritarian control — will become a unifying force in building a new nation or, rather, a precursor to deeper divisions. The fall of the House of Assad, which has ruled Syria for more than half a century, should be a warning to dictatorial regimes. Assad’s departure underscores a broader truth: Societies cannot indefinitely tolerate systemic abuses, such as state-sponsored propaganda, corruption and violence. The fish rots from the head down. ... The Syrian people were often forsaken. In this moment of fragile hope, the world must not fail them again. A concerted effort toward political stability, reconciliation and reconstruction is essential to ensure their sacrifices lead to a lasting peace. top646 ph login register The murder of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare , America’s largest health insurer, has generated a lot of discourse over the past week and renewed conversation about the state of the U.S. health care system — something that was almost entirely missing from the 2024 campaign. Social media users have actively celebrated the shooting and thirsted over the suspect . In the other direction, New York Times columnist Bret Stephens argued the insurance exec was a “working-class hero,” while blogger Noah Smith asserted that health insurers are simply “middlemen” and not “the main villain of the U.S. health system.” The CEO of UnitedHealth Group (UHC’s parent company) wrote in the Times that the health conglomerate’s purpose is “to build a health care system that works better for everyone.” Sure , man . Yet, CNN offered perhaps the strangest take in one segment this week: Americans are responsible for our health care system staying the way it’s designed today — i.e. based around private health insurance — because they like their insurance plans. On Wednesday, CNN anchor John Berman and Harry Enten, a senior political data reporter, reviewed poll results from Gallup which showed that Americans broadly have negative views about health care coverage in the U.S., believe health care costs are too high, and say the health care system has major problems. Americans, for the most part, have more favorable views of their own health care coverage — which Berman and Enten repeatedly emphasized — though those numbers were not resounding. “We can’t just say Americans hate health care. No, they like their health care,” said Berman. “They just have this notion they don’t like the health care system. I suppose you can hold those two views at once, but it is complicated.” The argument that Americans like their own health insurance plans is a favorite industry talking point. Indeed, as the internet was heralding the UnitedHealthcare CEO’s murder, the health care industry’s primary anti-reform front group was posting on X: “A majority of voters nationwide are satisfied with their current health plans.” (The corollary to this industry talking point is: And that’s why nothing should ever change .) The thing is, people are typically OK with their health insurance plans until they really need to use it — and see their claims denied, get told they can’t receive a necessary treatment, or find themselves paying major out-of-pocket costs. Considering the rest of Berman’s comment, the idea that Americans could like their health care and hate the system is still not necessarily a complicated view, because the U.S. health care system is uniquely expensive and wasteful. America spends far more on health care than other wealthy countries — for exceedingly poor outcomes. Being dissatisfied with the total cost of the health care system — as 79 percent of Americans are, per the Gallup poll — is simply correct. Enten took things a step further: “You wonder why the health care system in this country stays the same,” he said. “It’s because people don’t like health care, in sort of the abstract — but when it comes to their own health care, a lot of Americans actually are pretty gosh darn satisfied with it.” The idea that Americans are responsible for the health care system remaining the way it’s designed is ludicrous. The two have nothing to do with each other. The public doesn’t set policy — and even when Americans believe they are voting for change or for a specific policy platform they were promised, they rarely get it, thanks to entrenched corporate power and rampant corruption. Donald Trump won in 2016 railing against health insurers that “are making a fortune because they have control of the politicians.” His first administration did nothing to address this in office, and instead encouraged more seniors to sign up for privatized Medicare Advantage plans. Joe Biden , meanwhile, campaigned in 2020 on a promise to enact a public health insurance option — and has not even once mentioned that policy idea as president. Instead, Democrats gave more subsidies , i.e. extra money, to health insurers to help more Americans sign up for individual health insurance plans. Related Content Luigi Mangione Wrote Online About a Spine Disorder. Other Patients Say It's Hell Meet the New FBI Boss. He Sued the Old Boss. And Got Laughed Out of Court Kimmel Calls Out Trump's Bumpy Past With 'Time' Magazine's 'Person of the Year' ‘It’ll Be Brutal’: Inside Trump’s Planned War on Leakers and the Press Blaming Americans for the current system remaining in place obscures those who are actually responsible: a collection of massively lucrative businesses that profit from the current arrangement and the many politicians on both sides of the aisle who either dutifully represent their interests or are afraid to take on an industry with deep pockets — or both. Our health care system works phenomenally well for health insurance companies, of course, and for other powerful industries: for instance, pharmaceutical companies that want to be able to keep drug prices far higher in the U.S. than in the rest of the world, or hospital chains that charge private plans much higher prices than Medicare would pay. That’s why lobbies for health insurers, drug companies, and chain hospitals created a front group to oppose reform ideas like Medicare for All , the public option, and efforts to lower the Medicare eligibility age. (That front group is the one trying to tell people on X that Americans actually really like their health coverage and don’t want any meaningful changes.) These lobbying groups each collect tens or hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue each year, from industries that collectively generate tens or hundreds of billions in annual revenue. (To be clear, there are many other lines of business that profit off our health care system’s bloat and administrative waste.) All of the money sloshing around the health care system makes it incredibly difficult to change much, if anything, about it — because it limits any political incentive to try. Powerful health care interests shower politicians with donations, fund front groups that support them , and can spend these politicians into the ground any time, at will, if it becomes necessary. As Democrats negotiated the Affordable Care Act between 2009 and 2010, health insurance lobbyists quietly funneled more than $100 million to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to run a sprawling campaign slamming the legislation and its supporters. The ACA became law, but Democrats ultimately nixed the public option — before promising that idea again in 2020 and immediately dropping it once they won. This year’s election featured little conversation about potential health care reforms. When Trump was asked during a debate to describe his plans for health care, the president-elect only said he had “concepts of a plan” to improve the ACA. It was an embarrassing moment — yet, a Fox News Voter Analysis found the majority of respondents who said they were very concerned about their health care costs were supporting Trump. Now, Team Trump is considering making it even harder for low-income households to access Medicaid coverage — and using the savings to help pay for more tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. Republicans may also allow the expanded subsidies to expire , which would make it more expensive for many Americans to buy individual coverage. Americans didn’t make our health care system the way it is today — and they certainly didn’t vote for Republicans to make it even worse, if that’s what they end up doing. An immensely powerful health care industry and corrupt political class give Americans no choices in these matters at all.Cupertino, December 25: The iPhone 18 Pro will likely be launched in 2026, and ahead of that launch, several new details have surfaced hinting at its camera capabilities. Best HEPA vacuums for allergies 2024 – tested by our home tech pros for tight filtration that really combat allergens at home

My name is Rev. Clayton Summers, I have a background in engineering and I serve as the Resident Minister & Caretaker of the Walter Scott Camp & Learning Center south of Effingham. Two of the main focuses of Walter Scott are Education and Creation Care. Here at Walter Scott, we have now had our solar panels installed and tied into the grid for around 18 months. As part of that, we wanted to share the experience thus far, some of the numbers, and how this is a viable (and affordable) way to Care for Creation that nearly any person, family, church, nonprofit, or business entity can do. Our system is a 10kWh system, and thus far, our solar panels have saved an equivalent of 16 tons of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere compared to fossil fuel powered electricity. Another way to think about this would be as 1,600 gallons of gas, or driving a standard vehicle 35,000 miles. While there still are minerals mined in manufacturing solar panels, over their lifetime the mined minerals are 26 times less than if this energy were generated by coal. Additionally, solar panels make for cleaner air for everyone, as unlike fossil fuels, they do not increase rates of asthma or other breathing disorders from by-products of burning dirty energy sources. We do want to acknowledge that nothing lasts forever, and that is why we are grateful there are groups working on industrial-grade recycling centers for solar panels. These aren’t yet ready to handle all of the waste that will come, but people are working on solutions to problems we don’t even have yet. Our final note on the environmental impact of solar panels is that they alone aren’t going to stop climate change or save the planet, but they are part of an integrated solution to a clean grid. Along with hydropower, wind, nuclear, tidal generators, and battery storage, we can make a healthier environment together. When it comes to maintenance, the story of our panels can be summed up in one word: “low.” While some folks do clean off their panels to remove dust and improve efficiency, we get frequent enough rain in our area that this isn’t a factor with which we bother. The only times we clean off the panels are if we get substantial snow that will not be melting for several days (we put in maybe 1 hour of sweeping total over the course of a year). Other than this, we check in to make sure everything is functioning on the handy phone app twice a week and let them generate power. It’s pretty simple! The sticker price for our panels was $50,000. However, thanks to legislation in Illinois (the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act) and at the federal level (the Inflation Reduction Act), our total cost after all government rebates is $13,000. Given our utility provider and agreement for being tied into the grid, this means the panels will pay for themselves in 6.5 years, with about another 20 of producing free power after that. With the current legislation in place, we would be giving up free money (available to all non-profits, businesses, and individuals who own a home) to not have these panels. While legislation and tax credits/direct payments can change with different administrations, Illinois’ CEJA legislation does not currently have an end in sight (30% rebate). Even with zero rebates, solar would still be a net positive to our annual budget as it insulates us from any future rate hikes by utility providers. It is worth noting that if you haven’t looked in-depth at solar panels in the past 10 years, they have significantly decreased in cost as production has gone to scale. Like any technology, the cost decreases as it is produced in larger volumes. As of 2024, solar energy is the most cost-effective form of energy on the market. Do note that you should still make certain to go through a reputable company in installing solar. The best way to do this is by asking someone who already has solar panels who they used and if they are happy with the process. If it makes sense, choose a local provider to support the local community. Eighteen months in, if we were to install solar panels again (we will be doing this on other buildings at the camp, so it isn’t hypothetical for us), we would also opt for a battery as well. This will increase the initial cost, but save us money in the long run. We save more by using the energy we produce, than ‘selling’ it to our utility provider. In simple terms, we’d rather store what we don’t need and use it later, like in the evening when the sun isn’t shining, to maximize our savings. We find installing a clean energy source to be one of the expressions of our faith. The numbers show it is wise financial stewardship, but it also is wise earth stewardship. Our Christian faith calls for us to care for this sacred earth, and this is one of the many ways we are able to live into that call. If you want to know more, send us a message and we’ll be happy to talk about more specifics of the state and federal rebates, what the process is like from start to finish, and any other questions as we’re able.NoneUAE to mandate premarital genetic testing

Inside the mind of Pep Guardiola as he suffers sleepless nights and lives on soup during horror Man City runA bill barring New York City landlords from forcing tenants to pay broker fees cleared a final hurdle Tuesday as Mayor Adams confirmed he won’t veto the measure despite holding reservations about it. “The broker bill is going to be law because they have a veto-proof majority, and so I’m not vetoing the bill,” Adams told reporters at City Hall on Tuesday afternoon, referring to the margin by which the City Council passed the legislation last month . Still, Adams reiterated he believes the bill could have unintended consequences. Specifically, Adams has raised alarm about the possibility that landlords will simply bake the cost of broker fees into the rent once they can’t saddle tenants with the levies up front anymore. The mayor — who has had three vetoes overridden by the City Council since taking office in 2022 — said he opted against vetoing the broker fee bill because he doesn’t want to “put New Yorkers through distress and strife.” “I’m just not in that space of just these headlines of dispute ... We need to be in a better, calm place, and so I won’t veto the bill,” he said. “I shared what my concerns are, and life will determine if I was accurate in my concerns.” With the veto issue out of the way, the broker fee bill’s set to become law 180 days after its enactment. The bill will automatically be enacted on Dec. 13 unless Adams signs it before then, which he declined to say Tuesday whether he will. “I’m not going to veto the bill. The question is if I’m going to sign it or not,” he said. Currently, landlords can — and often do — require tenants to pay the fee real estate brokers charge to facilitate an apartment rental. Such fees can range in the thousands of dollars, exacerbating move-in costs for tenants in a city where surging rents are already a widespread problem. Under the Council bill , which was introduced by Brooklyn Councilman Chi Osse, the party who hires a broker would be responsible for paying their fees. Since landlords are almost always the hiring party in such contexts, they would become responsible for covering broker fees under the new regime. Osse, a progressive Democrat, and other supporters of his bill have hailed it as a common sense measure that will help alleviate some financial burden on working class New Yorkers in an increasingly expensive city. Bill supporters have also disputed the mayor’s arguments against it, noting that rent hikes are capped by law on hundreds of thousands of apartments in the city due to stabilization laws . Asked for a reaction to the mayor’s decision against vetoing his bill, Osse told the Daily News: “I’m happy about it.”

top646 slot login (BPT) - This article was sponsored and developed by Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting movement and posture that begins in early childhood development. It is the most common cause of motor disability in children, affecting about one in 345 children in the United States. 1-2 It may happen as a result of lack of oxygen during or around birth, stroke, infection, a problem with metabolism or other problems that cause injury or affect the development of parts of the brain involved in movement control in the first few years of life. 3 CP is a permanent condition, affecting a person for their entire life. People living with CP typically have motor problems, which may include spasticity (abnormal muscle tightness), dyskinesia (uncontrolled movements) or ataxia (poor muscle control), and many people have a mix of these motor disorders. 4 Dyskinesia due to CP (DCP) is one of the most disabling forms of CP and impacts approximately 10% to 20% of people living with CP. 5-6 According to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation (CPF), the combination of irregular and unpredictable movements (chorea) and twisting and repeating movements (dystonia) often disrupt activities and cause significant functional impairment, including the ability to maintain balance, walk or fine motor control. 7 Heather Riordan, M.D., Neurologist and Movement Disorders Specialist, Director of the Phelps Center for Cerebral Palsy at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, discusses the symptoms of chorea and impact on patients in a video shared on the CPF website here . About 30% of people with DCP are affected mostly by these involuntary and irregular movements (chorea), while dystonia is the predominant motor finding in the remaining 70%. 8 However, it is common for both chorea and dystonia movements to be present together. 6 For people living with DCP, these movements can occur in any region of the body, including the arms and legs, torso and face and may vary in severity. They are often triggered or made worse by stimulation or stress. Because dyskinesia can occur at rest and/or when actively using the body, the problems with movement are very burdensome in day-to-day living, with discomfort and pain affecting the quality of life for people and their caregivers. 9 Jen Lyman, mom to a son with DCP, highlights how dyskinesia makes communicating more difficult. "The most difficult thing about dyskinesia is watching my son struggle to do things that he wants to do, but the extra movements get in the way...special things, such as using a touch screen to video chat with his grandmother, are nearly impossible despite his best efforts to use his hands and fingers. Something so simple, yet so special for him should be effortless." DCP has a wide-ranging impact on the individual, including lifelong challenges with movement, a higher risk of other medical issues, a higher rate of mental health challenges and difficulties with communication. 10-12 "Those of us who have the privilege to serve patients with dyskinetic, hyperkinetic or mixed cerebral palsy see the functional impact of this very challenging type of tone every day," said Susan Biffl, M.D., Rehabilitation Medicine Specialist at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego and Assistant Professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine. "Patients face challenges with self-care, independence, mobility, communication, fine motor skills that affect occupational and recreational activities, swallowing, social interactions and even sleep. As this tone is variable, it is much more challenging to treat than more consistent tone issues, such as spasticity." Treatment Options There are currently no Food and Drug Administration-approved treatments for DCP. Dystonia and chorea are often managed separately as they respond differently to various treatments, which can make treatment challenging. 3 Most drugs being investigated for DCP have focused on dystonia, and more research is needed to determine potential treatments for chorea. New treatment options are needed to help manage these movement disorders and improve daily function and quality of life for those affected. "After 20 years of caring for individuals with cerebral palsy, I continue to find those with dyskinetic cerebral palsy among the most challenging to treat, largely due to the limited effectiveness of available pharmacologic options," said Joyce Oleszek, M.D., Professor, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, University of Colorado School of Medicine. "There is an urgent need for more robust evidence to support pharmacologic treatments for this condition, given its profound impact on function, comfort and quality of life." Ongoing Research Clinical studies are important in the development of treatment options, allowing researchers to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of new medicines. The data from clinical studies are used to determine if an investigational treatment can be approved for use to treat certain disorders. There are ongoing clinical studies evaluating potential treatments for DCP, including one for chorea. Neurocrine Biosciences is conducting the KINECT ® -DCP clinical study, a Phase 3, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled study investigating the study drug, valbenazine, for the treatment of DCP. The clinical study is currently enrolling children, adolescents and adults six to 70 years of age who have been diagnosed with DCP. "The Cerebral Palsy Foundation is excited to partner with Neurocrine Biosciences on this study," said Rachel Byrne, Executive Director of the Cerebral Palsy Foundation. "We are proud to support strong research that can potentially bring meaningful change to the lives of those living with cerebral palsy." Details of shocking new claims by White HouseLOS ANGELES (AP) — Lynne Roberts wasn’t looking to leave the Utah women’s basketball team. Then she got a call from Los Angeles Sparks general manager Reagan Pebley that changed her thinking. Roberts was introduced Thursday as coach of the Sparks, becoming the second coach to make the leap from college to the WNBA this month. Karl Smesko of Florida Gulf Coast got the Atlanta Dream job last week. “I was 100 percent invested at Utah,” Roberts said. “It just kind of felt like this is a golden opportunity. As a competitor, the chance to coach the best in the world, it’s what I want.” She replaces Curt Miller , who was let go in September and now is general manager of the Dallas Wings. Roberts inherits a team that has a strong young nucleus of Rickea Jackson, Cameron Brink and Dearica Hamby. The Sparks have the No. 2 pick in next year’s WNBA draft. “We’ve got kind of a cool combination of some veteran leadership and then we’ve got a really dynamic young group,” Roberts said. “That’s a good roster right there and then we can keep working with it.” Los Angeles finished 8-32 last season for the league’s worst record and has missed the playoffs for four straight years. “I want to compete, I want to win now,” Roberts said. “I know that’s easier said than done, but I’m up for the challenge and I can’t wait to get started.” Roberts is friends with Southern California women’s coach Lindsay Gottlieb and UCLA coach Cori Close. “That was intentional,” Sparks general manager Reagan Pebley said. “That we were bringing somebody into this role that had existing relationships because again this is a community of women’s basketball that is exceptional.” Roberts added, “I want to be the top of that pyramid with the Sparks.” Roberts is returning to her native California. The 49-year-old coach grew up in the Northern California city of Redding. She played college ball at Seattle Pacific and then began coaching at Chico State before moving to Pacific and then Utah. Roberts was 165-116 in nine-plus seasons at Utah and recently signed a six-year extension. She led the team to three straight NCAA Tournament berths and was the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2023. The Utes have started this season 3-1 and will be coached by Gavin Petersen, who was promoted from associate head coach. “I poured 10 years of my life into that place and I loved it. I loved every minute of it,” Roberts said. “Where we started wasn’t great, where it is now is great and I’m very proud of that.” Roberts said the current upheaval in college basketball including name, image and likeness, the transfer portal and Utah's move to the Big 12 this season had nothing to do with her leaving. “I'm sitting here because it's a chance to coach the best people in the world and win a championship in LA. That's it,” she said. “As a competitor and as someone that kind of thrives in pressure, being in this market, being in LA, it sounds like heaven to me." TV star Charlotte Crosby said she has tightened security around her home with 24-hour monitored CCTV and patrol dogs, days after masked thieves carrying a machete attempted to rob her home. The former Geordie Shore star, who is nearly eight months pregnant, thanked a security company “for all the hard work this week” after adding the protections to her home. “Trebling our security measures, worth every penny to feel safe again in my own home,” the 34-year-old said in a post to her Instagram story. “Scumbags are gunna get a big shock the next time they even step foot on any perimeter of my land.” It comes after her fiance, Jake Ankers, said on social media that a group of men carrying a machete entered their home on Thursday evening while they were in the house with their two-year-old daughter. The businessman said one of the four men “had a red balaclava on” and was carrying the weapon at the top of the stairs. Durham Constabulary were alerted at 7pm on Thursday to reports of an aggravated burglary in Houghton-le-Spring, a town in the Sunderland area. A spokeswoman for the force said: “Officers attended the area, however the suspects left the scene before their arrival. “Nobody was injured in the incident and no items are believed to have been taken.” She added that an investigation is under way and anyone with information is asked to contact police. After the incident, Crosby was admitted to hospital after experiencing “serious pains” in her stomach, but confirmed her baby is “all fine”. Ankers appeared with the reality star on BBC Three reality show Charlotte In Sunderland. Crosby is best known for appearing in the MTV reality series Geordie Shore and winning the 12th series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2013. Arsenal, Manchester City and Bayern Munich all advanced to the Women’s Champions League quarterfinals with with two games to spare on Thursday. Late substitute Lina Hurtig scored the winner in Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Juventus in London. Khadija Shaw scored twice for City in a 2-1 win at Swedish club Hammarby. City stayed perfect in Group D with four victories and reached the last eight for the first time since 2021. Bayern Munich was held 1-1 at Vålerenga in Norway and still earned a quarterfinal berth after Juventus’ loss. Arsenal, Bayern and City join Chelsea, Lyon and Real Madrid in the quarterfinals. Two-time defending champion Barcelona routed Austrian champion St. Pölten 4-1. The Catalan club trails City by three points in their group and is in a strong position to advance. Bayern tops Group C with 10 points, Arsenal has nine followed by Juventus (3) and Vålerenga (1). Back to winning Man City responded to its first loss of the season, 2-0 at Chelsea in the Women’s Super League on Saturday. Still without injured star Vivianne Miedema , Shaw took charge, proving her scoring instincts after half an hour. The forward scored from inside the penalty area with a deflected shot that flew over goalkeeper Anna Tamminen to frustrate more than 20,000 noisy fans at the Stockholm Arena in the Swedish capital. Ellen Wangerheim equalized soon after the interval from close range to rejuvenate the crowd but Shaw struck again to restore the lead just minutes later. This time, she delivered a powerful right-footed finish from the edge of the area. Bayern and Harder contained Bayern dominated possession but could not translate it into goals until the 75th minute. It had to rely on substitute Jovana Damnjanović, who gave the visitors a late lead after connecting on a pass from Giulia Gwinn. The Norwegians, who have retained their domestic title, equalized in the 88th on Elise Thorsnes’ header following a corner. Pernille Harder, who found the back of the net five times for Bayern in the previous three games, could not do it again on Thursday and was substituted. Hurtig’s night Hurtig came on with 10 minutes remaining and made her presence immediately felt with several headers. She finally made the breakthrough with a minute remaining in regulation, tapping in from close range after Juventus’ poor clearance of a low cross by Stina Blackstenius. Hurtig won the Italian title with Juventus in 2021 and 2022 before joining the Gunners. Juventus seemed to learn a lesson from its 4-0 loss to Arsenal last week as its defense held firm till Hurtig’s arrival. Putellas scores her 200th Barcelona goal In an 11-minute span in the first half, Francisca Nazareth netted twice and 18-year-old Vicky Lopez scored once to put Barcelona in control. Nazareth’s double was followed by Lopez hitting the third with a shot high into the net for her first Champions League goal. Alexia Putellas made it 4-0 in the second half, finishing a fast attack that tore apart the defense in Vienna. It was her 200th goal for Barcelona and the 100th the club scored in the Champions League’s group stage. Valentina Mädl, an 18-year-old forward, netted a consolation goal for the hosts. Barcelona has scored 20 goals in its past three games and can still become the first club to win its group in all four years since the introduction of the format. Today’s human life has become quite complicated—thanks to the multifarious inventions of modern technology. Machines of different types and functions developed by scientific pursuits of contemporary times have made human living far more comfortable than hitherto, at least on the face of it. Gadgets and devices to aid our daily life activities have made our chores easier and, in many cases, effortless. Today, we don’t have to physically exert much to perform most of our daily chores. By harnessing the enormous power of electricity, we have devised machines to perform all our tasks at the press of a button or the click of the computer ‘mouse’. Even tasks like reading, cataloguing, extracting, filtering and interpreting are being outsourced to the latest tool called Artificial Intelligence or AI. Despite the wonderful gifts of technology, as mentioned above, human peace and happiness are at a great premium. The individual feels vacuous inside, and there is a wanton feeling of fulfilment. There is a grave sense of insecurity pervading all. Ideas and ideologies are many, and these have been embraced by sets of human beings dispersed all over the globe, but most of such ideologies are at variance with each other in a few or many ways. These ideologies determine fashion, lifestyles, customs, traditions and habits, leading to broad cultural differences. And some of these differences are so sharp that human communities holding them are living in conflict mode, riven by mutual suspicion, fear and insecurity. Hence, insecurity has afflicted humans at the individual level as well as the community level. Insecurity is the greatest bane of modern times. A businessman feels insecure about the uncertainties of the demand and supply situation, which can affect the market for his traded goods. A stock trader is ever in fear of the bulls or bears overwhelming the market depending upon which trading position he has taken. An old person is afraid of moving around freely lest he should fall and sustain injuries. An average employee working in the corporate sector is ever afraid to lose his job. The ruler of a country feels constantly insecure in the face of powerful enemy countries located across its borders. A farmer growing seasonal crops is insecure about his crops because of the vagaries of monsoon rains. A tiny toddler or small child feels insecure when it loses sight of its mother. Youngsters are insecure about their conjugal relationships. Life is uncertain, and you can never be sure what problem or pitfall you may have to face in the immediate or near future and this future is actually unpredictable. The whole insurance industry thrives on this sense of human insecurity about the future. Insecurity is a universal reality, and we need to keep provisioning for material resources. But insecurity should not grip us, leading to disruption of mental peace and pesky worry or tension. It will then play havoc with our personality and mar our productivity. We have to develop a more rational and pragmatic perspective on fear and insecurity. Truly speaking, nagging insecurity is due to factors more internal to us than external. Actually, the nagging sense of insecurity of people in modern times springs from ignorance, illusion and lack of perseverance. The first and foremost issue of importance in this regard is that we should try to develop a logical, rational approach toward things. Being overly emotional and succumbing to anger, pride, passion, and greed dilutes our sense of objectivity and drags us away from the truth of things. We should try to find out the truth and grasp it in all situations and circumstances. For this, we need to shed our positive and negative biases towards things and persons and acquire a level-headed approach. Truth is not to be found on the extreme left side or the extreme right side of the emotion spectrum. It is located somewhere near the centre. When insecurity comes from factors external to us which are largely not in our control, we must understand that peace-disrupting forces are generated by running faulty paradigms of living which are not consistent with core, divine truths handed down to us by the creator in the primal scriptures called the Vedas. We should refer to these divinely ordained scriptures to align our institutional systems with eternal, core truths expounded therein. Life is beautiful and precious, and each one of us has the right to peaceful and progressive living. Celebrating the uncertainty of life and controlling the fear triggering internal and external factors can render our lives very peaceful and optimistic and banish insecurity. DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams will not be charged with a crime after he was found with a gun in a car driven by his brother, a prosecutor said Monday. The gun on the floor was registered to Williams, but he didn’t have a concealed-carry permit. His brother did. Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Michigan law is “far from clear” when applied to the 1 a.m. traffic stop on Oct. 8. “We really could not recall any case that had facts that mirrored this case,” she said. Williams was riding in a car driven by his brother when Detroit police stopped the vehicle for speeding. Williams said one of two guns in the car belonged to him and was registered. But without a concealed-pistol license, known as a CPL, a Michigan gun owner typically must place the weapon in a closed case while in a vehicle. A violation is a felony. In this case, Williams’ brother had a permit. “The CPL holder here was the driver and had care, custody and control of the car,” Worthy said. “Guidance is needed for the future on how many weapons can a valid CPL say that they have control over.” Williams obtained a CPL on Nov. 6, a month later, attorney Todd Flood said. The NFC East-leading Eagles (9-2) have won seven in a row and play four of their final six games in Philadelphia, traveling only about 125 miles to visit the Ravens (8-4) this weekend and the Washington Commanders in Week 16. Sunday's game features the NFL's two leading rushers. Barkley (1,392 yards) and Henry (1,325) are far ahead of Green Bay's Josh Jacobs (944) in third place. Henry leads the league with 13 rushing touchdowns. Barkley (10) is tied for fourth and Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts (11) tied for second. The matchup also features two of the top candidates for Most Valuable Player honors entering Week 13 in Barkley and Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson, who won his second MVP award last season. Their competition includes quarterbacks Josh Allen of Buffalo and Jared Goff of Detroit, with Allen widely considered the favorite. "Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry are phenomenal football players that help their team win football games, and Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley are phenomenal football players that help their team win football games," Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. "Excited about the opportunity this week because it's our next one. It will be a really good opponent, really well coached, good players, good atmosphere that will be there. Excited about the opportunity this week. And we're going to have to be on it against a really good team." The showdown at M&T Bank Stadium also pits Baltimore's No. 1 offense (426.7 yards per game) and No. 2 scoring offense (30.3 points per game) against Philadelphia's No. 1 defense (274.6) and No. 6 scoring defense (18.1). The Eagles have held seven consecutive opponents to under 300 total yards, while the Ravens have gained at least 329 yards of offense in all 11 games. Philadelphia is coming off a 37-20 road win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night in which Barkley smashed the franchise record with 255 rushing yards. Baltimore also earned a prime-time win in Los Angeles, defeating the Chargers 30-23 in the "Harbaugh Bowl" on Monday night behind Jackson's three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing). Jackson said he's looking forward to the Barkley and Henry show. "I've known Saquon from high school. We were in the all-star game together and he jumped over somebody's head," Jackson recalled Wednesday. "So I've pretty much seen him before I even got to the league, college, anything. I've been knowing about Saquon, but Derrick Henry -- King Henry -- I'm with him every day and I'm seeing what he's capable of, so it's going to be a great matchup." Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith practiced Wednesday after sitting out Monday with a hamstring issue. Nose tackle Michael Pierce (calf) was designated to return from injured reserve. Tight end Charlie Kolar (broken arm) is out for several weeks and cornerback Arthur Maulet (calf) did not practice. The Eagles lost veteran defensive end Brandon Graham to a season-ending triceps injury Sunday. Wideout DeVonta Smith (hamstring) missed the win over the Rams and did not practice Wednesday. Neither did cornerbacks Darius Slay (concussion) or Kelee Ringo (calf). Philadelphia is 5-1 away from home this season -- 6-1 if you count their season-opening "home" victory against the Packers in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Baltimore is 4-1 at home. The Ravens hold a 3-2-1 lead in the series with the Eagles. They haven't met since Baltimore's 30-28 win in Week 6 at Philadelphia in 2020. After signing an energy partnership with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store in Bergen, Sir Keir flew to Estonia where he spoke alongside Mr Store and their Estonian counterpart Kristen Michal. Asked what else could be done to support Ukraine, Sir Keir said: “There is an ever-increasing demand for more capability. That is understandable, and Ukraine needs all the capability that it can get, so I think all of us have put in more capability into Ukraine by way of equipment.” He added: “A lot of money has been raised, funding has been raised, but more is going to be needed.” The Prime Minister’s also discussed making the economic case at home for continued support for Ukraine. Sir Keir said: “Making the case on the significance of Ukraine, making the case, to double down, linking it back to each of our countries – what does it mean for us if Russia succeeds, is a really important question that we have to answer with our people to make it clear why it is that we are so supportive of Ukraine, why it is that we must stand with our allies on this, why it is we must make sure that Nato is put in the strongest position as well. “Now, this is a different world to the world of 10, 20 years ago, to recognise the world that we are living in, there’s a positive case as well to be made. “Defence spending doesn’t sort of sit in a silo over here with no effect on the rest of the economy, no effect on technology. “It has a huge effect on technologies, the cutting edge of technology and change which can then be used in other areas. “It binds countries together. I think all of us have got joint projects on in terms of defence capabilities that bind us together. There’s a huge number of well-paid jobs that are very important to our economy in defence spending as well. “But we have to make that positive case. I don’t personally feel that we can sort of sit back and assume that all of those in our respective countries necessarily accept all of our arguments unless we make them in that positive way, which I do think the argument can and should and must be made. “But the challenge that you put to us is the right challenge, which is it’s very difficult when finances are tight, as they are in all of our countries.” On Tuesday morning the Prime Minister will meet Taavi Madiberk, the founder of Estonian tech start-up manufacturing low-cost air defence missiles, Frankenburg Technologies, which is planning to open a new office in London Specialising in the manufacture of the missiles, the rapidly growing company already collaborates closely with the UK defence industry, sourcing a significant portion of its subsystems locally, including from propulsion specialists Roxel in Worcestershire. The Prime Minister will again attend the JEF summit, joining leaders from the Nordics and Baltics to discuss support for Ukraine, the sustained threat posed by Russia and wider European security. He will then visit British forces serving in the region to deter malign Russian threats.

One of the primary misconceptions about a "Trump 2.0" is the tendency to apply a one-size-fits-all comparison to any populist leader who emerges on the political scene. Professor Ouyang emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between different leaders and movements, rather than lumping them together under the umbrella of a singular archetype. While there may be similarities between Trump and other populist figures, each individual possesses unique characteristics and motivations that shape their actions and policies.

AP finds that a Pentagon-funded study on extremism in the military relied on old dataThe dismissal of a class-action lawsuit over rules governing the cross-border live bee trade is casting a spotlight on political division within Canada’s beekeeping community. A federal judge has ruled against awarding commercial beekeepers damages from a decades-old partial ban on shipping live honeybees across the Canada-U.S. border, which is in place out of concerns that could bring in aggressive pests and diseases. Beekeepers from Western Canada involved in the suit claim the government’s risk assessments that inform the tight restrictions are hurting their businesses and are blown out of proportion. Michael Paradis of Paradis Honey Ltd., a seven-generation family beekeeping business based in Girouxville, Alta., and one of the representative plaintiffs in the case, said he’s disappointed with the ruling, saying it puts beekeepers in a “dangerous position” since the industry is already in crisis mode. “Canada does not have enough bees and cannot replenish its own stock at all,” he said. “It’s going to mean a lot more hardship for the industry if we cannot get access to the U.S. bees.” Beekeepers were slammed during the COVID-19 pandemic, when fewer airline flights made it harder to import bees and they suffered a nightmare year of winter losses in 2022. Manitoba commercial beekeeper Brent Ash, one of the witnesses in the case, said the ruling will hamper the industry, and makes it especially tough for apiaries in colder parts of the country like the Prairies, where most of Canada’s beekeepers are located. “Climate makes the regional divide difficult to keep those bugs alive over the course of the winter,” he said, noting honeybees are not native to North America. But Steve Moore, president of the Ontario Beekeepers’ Association, said his group worries about the risks of accidentally bringing in antibiotic resistant mites, the import of Africanized honeybees commonly known as killer bees, and a small hive beetle that’s capable of damaging colonies. “In Ontario here, we feel quite strongly that we don’t want to take the risk of it becoming even more challenging if some of these new and emerging threats come into the country in packages,” he said. But he empathizes with the plaintiffs. “When we go into our apiaries, we get stung by our bees. When we come home, we might be stung by a low honey price, stung by rising cost of production or stung by high overwintering losses, with the threat of new and emerging pathogens. So, we’re all facing the same challenges and it’s a challenging time to be a beekeeper,” he said. Even though a ban on U.S. live bee imports expired in 2006, Ottawa has not issued permits for the live worker bee boxes to be brought over the border since. The plaintiffs argued Ottawa owes them duty of care — and hundreds of millions in damages. The judge disagreed. “There is no duty of care owed and no negligence,” Justice Cecily Strickland wrote in a lengthy ruling, adding the plaintiffs failed to establish that Ottawa hurt their businesses. The case has a long history, dating back to a court filing from 2012, and was only certified as a class action in 2017. The problem is even older. Headlines from the 1980s screamed about fears that deadly infectious mites from U.S. states could level Canadian bee populations. Risks to bee health have only compounded since then. A 2003 risk assessment by the regulator found that importing queen bees was less risky, since they are easier to inspect. So, Canada allows imports of queen bees and their worker-bee attendants from the U.S., Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Italy and Malta. “Bee packages carry a higher risk of disease introduction because they are shipped with the contents of their hive, which may include mites, parasites and bacteria,” said a statement from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency that welcomed the judge’s ruling. Canada does, however, also allow imports of worker bee packages from Italy, Chile, Australia and New Zealand, which sent Canada some 69,364 kgs of packaged bees in 2023, according to statistics from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. But importing from these countries also dramatically drives up import costs due to transportation. One of the plaintiffs, John Gibeau, wrote to CFIA a decade ago complaining that importing more than 1,200 packages for $170,000 would have cost half that if he could have purchased them from California instead. Gibeau said he wasn’t ready to comment since he hasn’t yet digested the ruling. Paradis said the larger issue for him than cost, though, is the quality of the bee stock and the timing of when shipments arrive. “We are looking at bees in the U.S. that are spring bees — young, invigorated bees,” he said, adding that gives them longer lifespans in Canada. While he was disappointed, Paradis said one of the main reasons for the lawsuit was to “bring CFIA to the table and to actually have some discussions” on the import ban, something he said has only happened recently. Canada’s honeybee pollination is estimated to contribute $3.18 billion directly to the economy, but that rises to $7 billion a year when canola pollination is factored in. Canada has some 794,341 beehives.

As somebody who deals with asthma and allergies on a daily basis, breathing clean air at home is a must. Even without these ailments, breathing purified air improves your health, deepens your sleep, and reduces how often you get sick. I test products for a living, and from the four air purifiers I've tested for H&G , there's only one I keep in my own bedroom: the Molekule Air Mini+. It's an advanced purifier that has immeasurably improved my wellbeing at home. I now barely use my asthma inhaler and, in the summer, I don't have to worry about hayfever when I'm indoors – even with the windows open. It's certainly one of the world's best air purifiers and usually, the price reflects this. But it's now at its lowest price ever in Molekule's Black Friday sale with a generous $150 discount, and it likely won't be this affordable for a long time. Molekule Air Mini+ | was $359.99 , now $209.99 at Molekule (save $150) Premium purifier brand Molekule have discounted their top-of-the-line air purifiers for Black Friday, with $150 off the Air Mini+. It's able to destroy harmful pollutants at the molecular level, setting it apart from others as one of the only purifiers to be FDA-approved as a Class II medical device. Here’s what I think makes the Molekule Air Mini+ worth your money this Black Friday if you’re looking for an appliance that will give you cleaner, healthier air at home. In my review for the Molekule Air Mini+ , one of the most incredible and unique features I discovered was Molekule's patented PECO filtration. Standard air purifiers will typically have a tight mesh filter (like a HEPA filter ) to capture particles, and an activated carbon filter to deal with gases and odors. But Molekule's Air Mini+ and the bigger, more expensive Molekule Air Pro utilize a third layer of filtration, known as PECO tech, that actively destroys pollutants at the molecular level. So rather than just filtering out these harmful particles from your air, it deactivates the contaminants, making everything even safer when re-released back into your indoor space. From my four months of using the Molekule Air Mini+, and testing three other purifiers alongside it, I can confirm that its effects are among the best. At its lowest setting it can run quietly in the background, often going unnoticed when I'm working or sleeping in the room. At its highest settings, it can rapidly remove smoke , viruses and other pollutants from the air, and you can see just how quickly it does the job on the Molekule app with detailed air quality data over time. The Molekule app displaying air quality over time Before being available to consumers, Molekule had great success developing air purification systems for commercial spaces like hospitals. The Molekule Air Mini+ and the Molekule Air Pro are two of the only air purifiers that are FDA-approved as Class II medical devices thanks to their unique ability to destroy harmful matter. This tech, naturally, comes at a price, as the Molekule Air Mini+ is usually priced at $360. Now that the price is down to just $209.99 for Black Friday, its lowest of all time, you can bring this market-leading air purifying technology into your home for a fraction of the usual cost. Trust me, you won't get a better air purifier at that price. If you're looking for more coverage (the Air Mini+ covers 250 square feet), the Air Pro can cover up to 1,000 square feet. It's also on offer for Black Friday with a whopping $420 discount. Next, compare dehumidifiers vs air purifiers to find out what your home needs.Sheridan College announces major program cuts and layoffs amid international student cap

Barring Supreme Court intervention in the next five weeks or so, TikTok may have to shut down its US operations, something that a legion of influencers making incomes from the platform are not happy about. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has ruled that a federal law may proceed that requires Chinese company ByteDance to sell off TikTok's American operations to an American company or else shut down the app here on January 19. This stems from a law passed by Congress in the spring that bans TikTok from operating here so long as the app is Chinese-owned — and its data could potentially be accessed by a hostile Chinese government. As we discussed back in April , TikTok had 270 days to identify an American buyer for the app, or for its American operations only. But experts concurred at the time that the forced sale was likely to be delayed by legal battles. Now, as the New York Times reports , it will be up to the Supreme Court to step in and delay the law from taking effect, and this would have to happen before Inauguration Day, and before President-elect Trump could potentially step in himself. President Biden, for his part, is the one who signed the law. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have expressed concerns for several years about the possibility of user data from millions of American users falling into the hands of the Chinese government. Though ByteDance and its American operations have insisted that all American user data has been adequately secured and would not be shared. All may not be as they say, though, and a case from two years ago in which ByteDance had to apologize for spying on two BuzzFeed journalists doesn't do well to bolster their pledges of respecting Americans' privacy. Lawyers for TikTok say that any ban on the app would infringe on the First Amendment rights of American users. But the appeals court judges disagreed, writing in their ruling Friday, "The government acted solely to protect that freedom from a foreign adversary nation and to limit that adversary’s ability to gather data on people in the United States." The lawyers have vowed to appeal to the Supreme Court, with company spokesperson Michael Hughes issuing a statement saying, "The Supreme Court has an established historical record of protecting Americans’ right to free speech, and we expect they will do just that on this important constitutional issue." It remains to be seen if the Supreme Court will deem the case worthy of its attention, or whether it may just let the appeals court ruling stand. One expert, Georgetown University professor Anupam Chander who specializes in law and technology, predicts to the Times that the Supreme Court justices will issue an injunction freezing the law, allowing the case to be handed over to the incoming Trump administration. Chander previously predicted that the process of trying to sell TikTok off would be a "royal mess" — and the company now says it's impossible anyway, because the Chinese government won't allow it. Meanwhile, former SF District Attorney Suzy Loftus has been on the inside of this battle, having joined the team at TikTok as director of safety in 2021. Loftus has touted the "unprecedented and voluntary steps that TikTok has taken to safeguard US user data," but it's not clear that those efforts mattered much in the legal proceeding. The gunman who stalked and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson fled New York City by bus, police officials told CNN on Friday. Video of the suspected shooter leaving the scene of the shooting Wednesday showed him riding a bicycle to Central Park and later taking a taxi cab to a bus depot, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told CNN. Here's the latest: The gunman who killed the CEO of the largest U.S. health insurer may have fled the city on a bus, New York City police officials told CNN on Friday. Video of the suspected shooter leaving the scene of the shooting Wednesday showed him riding a bicycle to Central Park and later taking a taxi cab to a bus depot, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told CNN. “We have reason to believe that the person in question has left New York City,” Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. The gunman who killed the CEO of the largest U.S. health insurer made sure to wear a mask during the shooting yet left a trail of evidence in view of the nation’s biggest city and its network of security cameras that have aided authorities piecing together his movements and his identity. A law enforcement official said Friday that new surveillance footage shows the suspect riding the subway and visiting establishments in Manhattan and provided more clues about his actions in the days before he ambushed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson . The gunman’s whereabouts and identity remain unknown Friday, as did the reason for Wednesday’s killing. New York City police say evidence firmly points to it being a targeted attack . ▶ Read more about the search for the gunman In many companies, investor meetings like the one UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was walking to when he was fatally shot are viewed as very risky because details on the location and who will be speaking are highly publicized. “It gives people an opportunity to arrive well in advance and take a look at the room, take a look at how people would probably come and go out of a location,” said Dave Komendat, president of DSKomendat Risk Management Services, which is based in the greater Seattle area. Some firms respond by beefing up security. For example, tech companies routinely require everyone attending a major event, such as Apple’s annual unveiling of the next iPhone or a shareholder meeting, to go through airport-style security checkpoints before entering. Others forgo in-person meetings with shareholders. ▶ Read more about how companies protect their leaders Those images include New York’s subway system, a law enforcement official said. In establishments where the person was captured on camera, he always appeared to pay with cash, the official said. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. — Mike Balsamo Medica, a Minnesota-based nonprofit health care firm that serves 1.5 million customers in 12 states, said it’s temporarily closing all six locations. The firm has offices in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and North Dakota, and employs about 3,000 people. Employees will work from home, Medica spokesman Greg Bury said in an email Friday. “The safety of Medica employees is our top priority and we have increased security both for all of our employees,” a statement from Medica said. “Although we have received no specific threats related to our campuses, our office buildings will be temporarily closed out of an abundance of caution.” Bury also said biographical information on the company’s executives was taken down from its website as a precaution. The insurer cited the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in its announcement about the Dec. 12 event. “All of us at Centene are deeply saddened by Brian Thompson’s death and want to express our support for all of those affected. Health insurance is a big industry and a small community; many members of the CenTeam crossed paths with Brian during their careers,” Centene CEO Sarah M. London said in a news release. “He was a person with a deep sense of empathy and clear passion for improving access to care. Our hearts are with his family and his colleagues during this difficult time.” Centene Corp. has grown in recent years to become the largest insurer in Medicaid, the state- and federally funded program that covers care for people with low incomes. Insurers manage Medicaid coverage for states, and Centene has more than 13 million people enrolled in that coverage. The insurance company also said it’s focused on ensuring the safety of employees and assisting investigators. “While our hearts are broken, we have been touched by the huge outpouring of kindness and support in the hours since this horrific crime took place,” the company said. But he said Friday that he’s confident police will arrest the shooter. “We are on the right road to apprehend him and bring him to justice,” Adams said on TV station WPIX. Later, it removed their names and biographies entirely. Police and federal agents have been collecting information from Greyhound in an attempt to identify the suspect and are working to determine whether he purchased the ticket to New York in late November, a law enforcement official said. Investigators were also trying to obtain additional information from a cellphone recovered from a pedestrian plaza through which the shooter fled. The fatal shooting of Brian Thompson while walking alone on a New York City sidewalk has put a spotlight on the widely varied approaches companies take to protect their leaders against threats. Experts say today’s political, economic and technological climate is only going to make the job of evaluating threats against executives and taking action to protect them even more difficult, experts say. Some organizations have a protective intelligence group that uses digital tools such as machine learning or artificial intelligence to comb through online comments to detect threats not only on social media platforms such as X but also on the dark web, says Komendat. They look for what’s being said about the company, its employees and its leadership to uncover risks. ▶ Read more about the steps companies take to protect their leadership Police said Thursday they found a water bottle and protein bar wrapper from a trash can near the scene of the ambush and think the suspect bought them from a Starbucks minutes before the shooting. The items were being tested by the city’s medical examiner.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The NFL has closed an investigation into sexual assault allegations against Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is ending the season on injured reserve for the second year in a row. The league has been reviewing the case for months , trying to determine whether Watson should be punished. “The matter is closed,” league spokesman Brian McCarthy said Friday in an email to The Associated Press. “There was insufficient evidence to support a finding of a violation of the personal conduct policy.” Watson, who served an 11-game suspension in 2022, was accused of assault in Texas by a woman in September. She was seeking more than $1 million in damages before the sides reached a confidential settlement. Watson strongly denied the allegations through his attorney, Rusty Hardin. The 29-year-old Watson suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon rupture in October. He's been rehabbing the injury in hopes of returning next season. The Browns still owe Watson $46 million in each of the next two seasons after they traded three first-round picks to Houston and signed him to a five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million contract that has backfired. Watson has only played in 19 games over three seasons due to the suspension and injuries. He was acquired by the Browns, who were comfortable with his character despite Watson being accused of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage therapy sessions while he played for the Texans. While he's in the clear with the league, Watson's future with Cleveland isn't so certain. His massive contract — and its salary-cap ramifications — has put the Browns in a bind in terms of trying to improve their roster. Cleveland has had a disappointing season after making the playoffs a year ago and could move on from Watson, but the cost would be exorbitant if the team just releases him. The Browns signed Jameis Winston for one season to be Watson's backup. Winston has gone 2-3 as a starter since taking over and he's put some life into Cleveland's offense, which didn't score 20 points or gain 300 yards with Watson before his injury. His 2023 season was ended by a broken bone in his shoulder, requiring surgery. Winston has indicated he would come back, and he could be a viable option as a starter even if the Browns draft a young QB. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL

RJ Thompson scored 23 points -- including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 56 seconds left -- as Charleston Southern shocked host Miami 83-79 on Saturday afternoon. Miami entered the game as a 23.5-point favorite. Charleston (2-7) won its first game of the season away from home after losing its previous six road or neutral-court contests. The Buccaneers also got 21 points from Thompson Camara and 20 points and 11 rebounds from Taje' Kelly. Camara match his previous career point total. Miami (3-4), playing at home for the first time in two weeks, lost its fourth straight game. Brandon Johnson led Miami with 23 points and freshman Austin Swartz scored a career-high 15. Swartz entered the game averaging just 2.3 points For the first time this season, Miami was without Nijel Pack, who has a lower-body injury. Pack leads the team in scoring (15.2) and assists (4.7). With Pack out, five-star freshman Jalil Bethea made his first start and had six points. The game featured quite a contrast in coaches. Miami's Jim Larranaga, 75, has won 743 games in 41-plus seasons. Charleston Southern's Saah Nimley, 31, is in his full first season as a head coach. He was named interim coach in November 2023. In the first half, Miami raced to a 17-10 lead. However, Charleston Southern posted an 11-0 run to grab a 21-17 advantage. The Hurricanes lost control late in the first half as Miami's Johnson hit a 3-pointer and was hit with a technical foul for taunting. Later in the first half, Larranaga was also hit with a technical. By the end of the half, the Buccaneers led 45-37. Camara led Charleston Southern with 16 first-half points on 6-for-7 shooting, including 4-of-5 on 3-pointers. Johnson scored 12 for Miami in the opening half, all on 3-pointers. In the second half, Charleston Southern stretched its lead to 13. Miami rallied as the clock wound down. With 38 seconds left, Miami called a timeout while trailing 81-79. With 15 seconds left, Swartz missed a 3-pointer and the Buccaneers got the rebound. Daylen Berry made two free throws with 11 seconds left to ice the game. Up next, Miami will host No. 19 Arkansas on Tuesday night as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge. Charleston Southern will return home to face Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday night. --Field Level Media

NASHVILLE, Tenn (AP) — Nico Iamaleava threw for 257 yards and four touchdowns rallying No. 7 Tennessee from a 14-point deficit within the first five minutes to rout in-state rival Vanderbilt 36-23 Saturday. “Man, it couldn't have started any worse,” Tennessee coach Josh Heupel told his Vols postgame . “And you know what? Competitive composure ... You just kept coming. That's what elite people, champions do. You just keep coming.” The Volunteers (10-2, 6-2 Southeastern Conference; No. 8 CFP) needed a big victory to impress the College Football Playoff committee enough to earn a home playoff game in December. They beat Vanderbilt (6-6, 3-5) for a sixth straight season leaving the Commodores needing to win their bowl game to post their first winning record since 2013. Better yet, the Vols rebounded from a nightmare start giving up the first 14 points by scoring 29 straight points. They led 24-17 at halftime on Iamaleava's first three TD passes. “Once they took the momentum, we kind of allowed them to have it for the rest of the game," Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea said. "And you got to credit Tennessee. I mean, obviously, they were playing for the playoffs and credit coach Heupel and his team for their winning performance.” Junior Sherrill returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown for Vanderbilt to stun a mostly orange crowd. Dylan Sampson fumbled on the Vols’ second play from scrimmage, and Sedrick Alexanader's 4-yard TD run on a 26-yard drive put Vandy up 14-0 quickly. Then Iamaleava got Tennessee going with a 28-yard TD pass to Dont’e Thornton Jr. Tennessee got a break when Max Gilbert's 50-yard field goal bounced off the crossbar and over. Iamaleava found Thornton again on an 86-yard catch-and-run TD, then he tossed an 18-yard TD pass to Miles Kitselman just before halftime. Iamaleava capped the opening drive of the third quarter hitting Mike Matthews with a 14-yard TD pass for a 31-17 lead. The Vols added a safety by Tyre West and another Gilbert field goal. Diego Pavia threw a 31-yard TD pass to Richie Hoskins late with Vandy's 2-point conversion failing for the final margin. Poll implications Tennessee didn't make a good early impression with yet another slow start. The Vols need to hope for some help to have a chance at moving up a spot or two . The big question is whether the Vols get to host a playoff game in December at Neyland Stadium where they went undefeated this season. The takeaways Tennessee put together TD drives of 91 and 96 yards in the first half alone. The Vols then beat Vandy at its own game of keepaway after not even managing 10 minutes of possession in the first half. They finished with the edge in that stat outgaining Vandy 538-212. Vanderbilt had some of the best offensive success against Tennessee of any opponent this season. The Commodores had 114 yards rushing and 17 points by halftime against a defense that came in ranked sixth nationally allowing just 98.8 yards a game. The Vols had been fourth in the country giving up just 13.1 points a game having held 10 of 11 opponents under 20 points this season. But Lea said the Commodores ran just 11 plays to Tennessee's 44 after halftime. Sampson's latest record The Tennessee running back, who set the program record with 22 rushing TDs this season, didn't reach the end zone for the first time this season. Sampson finished with 178 yards rushing to reach 1,485 yards for the season, topping the school mark of 1,464 set by Travis Stephens in 2001. Up next Tennessee waits to hear its spot in the CFP field, while Vanderbilt learns its bowl destination Dec. 8. Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . As the blueprint for a hard-right turn in America became a liability during the 2024 campaign, Trump pulled an about-face. He denied knowing anything about the “ridiculous and abysmal” plans written in part by his first-term aides and allies. Now, after being elected the 47th president on November 5, Trump is stocking his second administration with key players in the detailed effort he temporarily shunned. Most notably, Trump has tapped Russell Vought for an encore as director of the Office of Management and Budget; Tom Homan, his former immigration chief, as “border czar;” and immigration hardliner Stephen Miller as deputy chief of policy. Those moves have accelerated criticisms from Democrats who warn that Trump's election hands government reins to movement conservatives who spent years envisioning how to concentrate power in the West Wing and impose a starkly rightward shift across the US government and society. Trump and his aides maintain that he won a mandate to overhaul Washington. But they maintain the specifics are his alone. “President Trump never had anything to do with Project 2025,” said Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt in a statement. “All of President Trumps' Cabinet nominees and appointments are whole-heartedly committed to President Trump's agenda, not the agenda of outside groups.” Here is a look at what some of Trump's choices portend for his second presidency. As budget chief, Vought envisions a sweeping, powerful perch The Office of Management and Budget director, a role Vought held under Trump previously and requires Senate confirmation, prepares a president's proposed budget and is generally responsible for implementing the administration's agenda across agencies. The job is influential but Vought made clear as author of a Project 2025 chapter on presidential authority that he wants the post to wield more direct power. “The Director must view his job as the best, most comprehensive approximation of the President's mind,” Vought wrote. The OMB, he wrote, “is a President's air-traffic control system” and should be “involved in all aspects of the White House policy process,” becoming “powerful enough to override implementing agencies' bureaucracies.” Trump did not go into such details when naming Vought but implicitly endorsed aggressive action. Vought, the president-elect said, “knows exactly how to dismantle the Deep State” — Trump's catch-all for federal bureaucracy — and would help “restore fiscal sanity.” In June, speaking on former Trump aide Steve Bannon's “War Room” podcast, Vought relished the potential tension: “We're not going to save our country without a little confrontation.” Vought could help Musk and Trump remake government's role and scope The strategy of further concentrating federal authority in the presidency permeates Project 2025's and Trump's campaign proposals. Vought's vision is especially striking when paired with Trump's proposals to dramatically expand the president's control over federal workers and government purse strings — ideas intertwined with the president-elect tapping mega-billionaire Elon Musk and venture capitalist Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a “Department of Government Efficiency.” Trump in his first term sought to remake the federal civil service by reclassifying tens of thousands of federal civil service workers — who have job protection through changes in administration — as political appointees, making them easier to fire and replace with loyalists. Currently, only about 4,000 of the federal government's roughly 2 million workers are political appointees. President Joe Biden rescinded Trump's changes. Trump can now reinstate them. Meanwhile, Musk's and Ramaswamy's sweeping “efficiency” mandates from Trump could turn on an old, defunct constitutional theory that the president — not Congress — is the real gatekeeper of federal spending. In his “Agenda 47,” Trump endorsed so-called “impoundment,” which holds that when lawmakers pass appropriations bills, they simply set a spending ceiling, but not a floor. The president, the theory holds, can simply decide not to spend money on anything he deems unnecessary. Vought did not venture into impoundment in his Project 2025 chapter. But, he wrote, “The President should use every possible tool to propose and impose fiscal discipline on the federal government. Anything short of that would constitute abject failure.” Trump's choice immediately sparked backlash. Homan and Miller reflect Trump's and Project 2025's immigration overl Trump's protests about Project 2025 always glossed over overlaps in the two agendas. Both want to reimpose Trump-era immigration limits. Project 2025 includes a litany of detailed proposals for various US immigration statutes, executive branch rules and agreements with other countries — reducing the number of refugees, work visa recipients and asylum seekers, for example. Miller is one of Trump's longest-serving advisers and architect of his immigration ideas, including his promise of the largest deportation force in US history. As deputy policy chief, which is not subject to Senate confirmation, Miller would remain in Trump's West Wing inner circle. “America is for Americans and Americans only,” Miller said at Trump's Madison Square Garden rally on October 27. “America First Legal,” Miller's organisation founded as an ideological counter to the American Civil Liberties Union, was listed as an advisory group to Project 2025 until Miller asked that the name be removed because of negative attention. Homan, a Project 2025 named contributor, was an acting US Immigration and Customs Enforcement director during Trump's first presidency, playing a key role in what became known as Trump's “family separation policy.” Previewing Trump 2.0 earlier this year, Homan said: “No one's off the table. If you're here illegally, you better be looking over your shoulder.” Project 2025 contributors slated for CIA and Federal Communications chiefs John Ratcliffe, Trump's pick to lead the CIA, was previously one of Trump's directors of national intelligence. He is a Project 2025 contributor. The document's chapter on US intelligence was written by Dustin Carmack, Ratcliffe's chief of staff in the first Trump administration. Reflecting Ratcliffe's and Trump's approach, Carmack declared the intelligence establishment too cautious. Ratcliffe, like the chapter attributed to Carmack, is hawkish toward China. Throughout the Project 2025 document, Beijing is framed as a US adversary that cannot be trusted. Brendan Carr, the senior Republican on the Federal Communications Commission, wrote Project 2025's FCC chapter and is now Trump's pick to chair the panel. Carr wrote that the FCC chairman “is empowered with significant authority that is not shared” with other FCC members. He called for the FCC to address “threats to individual liberty posed by corporations that are abusing dominant positions in the market,” specifically “Big Tech and its attempts to drive diverse political viewpoints from the digital town square.” He called for more stringent transparency rules for social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube and “empower consumers to choose their own content filters and fact checkers, if any.” Carr and Ratcliffe would require Senate confirmation for their posts. Game stores are overflowing with these cash grabs, but you don’t have to fall for them. This post will tell you everything to detect and avoid shovelware games. The term shovelware originated in the early 1990s, referring to CD-ROMs stuffed with low-quality, outdated games or software emphasizing quantity over quality. The concept is similar to shoveling dirt – bundling mediocre products to increase perceived value. Today, it describes games made solely for profit, with little concern for quality, player retention, or long-term success. These games often use low-quality, recycled assets and mimic whatever gameplay is currently trending. For example, after the success of Flappy Bird, countless clones flooded the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Most of these clones were shovelware created to cash in on the original game’s popularity. Many developers produce cheap, low-quality games that can still turn a profit, even with minimal engagement. You’ll find such games on platforms with lenient publishing policies, like Google Play, the Apple App Store, Steam, and Nintendo eShop. While not all shovelware is inherently bad or a scam, its main focus is to monetize even brief player interaction. To avoid wasting time and money on these games, let’s learn how to detect shovelware games: On most online game stores, you can check the developer’s history showing all their other games, which can give clues about whether they focus on quantity or quality. Below are some things you need to look out for: A high game store rating doesn’t always mean a game is good. Developers can buy fake reviews and ratings to make their games look good. For shovelware, you need to look at reviews and find clues that are common in shovelware games. Be cautious of 5-star reviews as they could be fake. The most insightful reviews are the ones with 2, 3, or 4-star ratings. Below are some signs you need to look for: Depending on the game store, you can also filter reviews for enhanced information. For example, on Steam, you can check the play time of the user to see how long they played the game. If too many reviews have low play time, it could mean the game is low-quality and isn’t worth buying. Since churning out lots of games is a priority, many shovelware game developers often don’t provide in-depth details about the game. Their descriptions mainly focus on making the game look cool so that users can download it to find out. The description could be vague and only use words that make it sound fun like “addictive gameplay”, “master all tactics”, or “easy to learn”. They don’t tell you what the game offers and what you need to do in it which makes it fun. Furthermore, some really low-effort ones may even be written in broken English/grammar or feel like it was translated. A good game description usually talks about the game’s story, gameplay details, and the list of features. Make sure the description tells you exactly what you can expect from the game without needing to download it. All popular games like Clash of Clans, Flappy Bird, Candy Crush, or Counter-Strike have clones or similar-looking games trying to capitalize on their popularity. They even use matching titles to confuse players or make them curious to try. Since they are created to capitalize on another game’s popularity, they usually lack the quality of the original. The developers just quickly create a game with similar gameplay and try to monetize aggressively. For example, “Counter Strike CS: Gun Games” has a similar name to the popular FPS game “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive,” but it’s a completely different game with description and reviews suggesting it’s a low-effort game. Of course, not all games with matching titles are bad. For instance, Clash of Lords comes from a reputable developer, but the name is similar to Clash of Clans. However, it’s a good metric to detect shovelware when other signs are also present. Many shovelware games aren’t updated often as their core gameplay is already limited with no intention of expanding upon it. The developer either won’t update them often or fake updates them with vague changes that don’t tell what exactly was updated. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to track update history as not all online game stores provide detailed update history. On the Apple App Store, you can see the last 25 updates, which is usually more than enough. For most others, you’ll have to depend on third-party websites or the game’s official website. You can use the App Brain website to view the change log of most games on the Google Play Store. For Steam games, SteamDB offers a complete update history along with patch notes information. Depending on the game genre, it should be updated every 3-6 months. The changes should also be big enough to impact gameplay, not just some bug fixes that people can’t track. The updates should include gameplay balance changes, new levels/characters, new maps, etc. Any game worth its salt will have at least some discussions around it online. It doesn’t have to be official news or some special patch notes. Even lesser-known games have people talking about it on forums or creators making videos about it. Shovelware games usually don’t have any dedicated fan base talking about it online or creating guides. Usually, searching for their name online will only show their official listings on the online game stores and maybe a commissioned video on YouTube. If it has no online presence, it’s probably because it’s not worth people’s time. Shovelware games aren’t always bad, some may offer brief addictive gameplay loops. However, they are usually copies of the same popular ideas for which much better original games are already available. EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Justin Herbert is dealing with an ankle injury for the second time this season. The Chargers quarterback did not practice Wednesday as Los Angeles began preparations for its game Sunday against Tampa Bay. Herbert injured his left ankle during the first quarter of last Sunday's 19-17 loss at Kansas City. Herbert said Wednesday that the injury occurred during a 7-yard scramble on third down during the opening drive. Television cameras showed him grimacing and walking slowly to the sideline after the play. “It was difficult to play with," he said. "It was one of those things where we limited some of the runs out of the pocket. I didn't feel great, but it was one of those things to play through.” Herbert's left leg was later bruised after taking a hard hit from linebacker Nick Bolton during the second quarter. Herbert missed only one play and completed 21 of 30 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown. “The contusion, I think that is something that is easily recoverable. I'm doing everything I can with the ankle,” Herbert said. “If I felt like I could have practiced at 100% and make sure everyone was able to get full-speed reps, I would have. I didn't think I was able to do that today, so the trainers and I were on the same page.” Herbert suffered a high sprain to his right ankle during the third quarter of a 26-3 win at Carolina on Sept. 15. That limited his mobility and some of the play calls in losses to Pittsburgh and Kansas City the next two games. However, Herbert is not in a walking boot this time, which was the case with the injury earlier in the season. The fifth-year quarterback also said the pain tolerance with his ankle injury is better to deal with compared to the earlier one. “I’d like to see him get treatment and not be on his feet. He will do everything in his power to play on Sunday,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. The Chargers have lost two of their last three, but are the sixth seed in the AFC with an 8-5 record. After facing NFC South-leading Tampa Bay on Sunday, Los Angeles hosts Denver in a Thursday night matchup on Dec. 19 as both teams are vying for a playoff spot. It's the second time in three seasons Herbert is dealing with an injury after a game at Kansas City. In 2022, he fractured rib cartilage after taking a hard hit from Chiefs defensive lineman Michael Danna during the fourth quarter. Herbert missed two weeks during training camp because of an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot. He also had a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder near the end of the 2022 season and two broken fingers last year, including one on his throwing hand that caused him to miss the final four games. Herbert has joined Tom Brady as the only players who have not thrown an interception in 11 straight games with a minimum of 15 attempts in each game. Brady accomplished the feat with New England in 2010. The last time Herbert was picked off was midway through the first quarter on Sept. 15 by Carolina’s Jaycee Horn. Herbert has also gone 335 consecutive pass attempts without an interception, the fifth-longest streak in league history. Pension administrators have formed a consortium that will grant them a slice of capital-intensive projects with the aim of providing better returns for their members’ savings. The formation of the consortium is one of the major steps the sector players have taken as they seek to move away from the monotonous government securities, which have been noted to be unsustainable. Additionally, this move is expected to improve the savings culture, owing to the expected better returns, hence discouraging investment into dead assets - a term that has become synonymous with rural homes. The consortium, which ropes in pension administrators, fund managers and stock brokers, will help pool resources for the purpose of investing in these capital-intensive projects. Dubbed ‘The Pack Hunters Club’, the consortium seeks to position itself as the go-to financier for projects such as roads which are being financed largely by external investors and financial institutions. The aim of the club is to show the government that there is enough money in the domestic market to take up large projects such as toll roads and airport upgrades. For a long, while the pension industry has been lauded for growing its assets under management to Sh1.9 trillion as of June 2024, according to the Retirements Benefits Authority (RBA), the sector is said to be fragmented with over 1,300 schemes which makes it a challenge for them to invest in a significant project. However, out of these schemes, only 10 per cent have assets significant enough to invest in government infrastructure projects. The Pack Hunters Club, described as an innovative consortium, then brings together the Association of Pension Trustees and Administrators of Kenya (Aptak), the Fund Managers Association (FMA) and the Kenya Association of Stockbrokers and Investment Banks (Kasib). “This innovative consortium brings together key players in Kenya’s financial sector, including Aptak, the FMA, the Kasib, and custodians to pool resources and focus on large-scale infrastructure projects that are vital to Kenya’s economic growth,” said a statement signed by Old Mutual Asset Management managing director Anthony Mwithiga, Kasib chief executive Kasib Willie Njoroge and CPF Group executive advisor Geoffrey Odundo. Odundo is the lead advisor of the consortium. The statement noted that in the face of ever-growing infrastructure needs, The Pack Hunters Club aims to tackle projects that are too substantial for any single investor but can be successfully undertaken through strategic collaboration by Kenyan institutions and for Kenya. “This initiative seeks to address Kenya’s critical infrastructure gaps by collectively investing in high-impact, long-term ventures that will benefit both the economy and the people of Kenya,” it adds. The consortium will focus on key infrastructure projects, including major toll roads, airport upgrades, and the Nairobi-Mombasa expressway, among others. Stay informed. Subscribe to our newsletter These projects will be structured under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, or any other appropriate financing structures ensuring that the interests of both the Kenyan people and the investors are balanced. By pooling resources and expertise, the consortium seeks to attract both local and international investors, ensuring that the capital needed to fund these massive projects is readily available. “The investment structure is designed to offer a competitive rate of return, making it an attractive opportunity for investors while contributing to the development of vital infrastructure that will drive the country’s growth in order for Kenya to remain competitive economically,” the statement says. Speaking on behalf of Aptak, the association’s president Hosea Kili said the formation of club marks a significant milestone for the industry. “By creating a platform that encourages foreign investment, we are ensuring that these projects not only meet the immediate needs of the country but also deliver long-term value for all stakeholders involved, and especially the Kenya citizens,” he said. During a recent forum where CPF unveiled its umbrella pension fund called Taifa Pension Fund, Jubilee Holdings Group chief executive Julius Kipngetich emphasised the need to have a consolidated front in the pension sector. He said the practice of investing members’ savings in government securities is not sustainable. “We have to rethink where are we putting our money. We need to sit together as a pension industry, probably to seek an alternative investment. We can’t be throwing money in government securities,” he said. “As the Cabinet Secretary is thinking on how to shrink government (spending) so that interest rate come down, we also need to think of alternative investment.” Kipngetich noted that while at the institutional level money is directed into government securities, at an individual level many Kenyans are spending their savings on investments that have no returns. He listed expensive graduation parties, weddings, funerals and rural homes for town-dwelling folks as some of them. “We need a complete change in culture in where we spend our savings,” he said. National Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, who was present at the launch of the club, said there is need to reform the capital markets in order to make it easy for resource pooling and investments. He said pooling of resources for the purpose of investment will not only provide better returns for members but also reduce management fees and administrative costs due to economies of scale. “Very soon it will be difficult to buy government paper. Right now we are borrowing about Sh413 billion from the domestic market and at very high interest rates,” said the CS. “You must start thinking of other areas of partnerships with the government.” The CS said privately initiated proposals (PiP) are not limited to Indian or Chinese businesses. “We are not saying it must be done by Adani. Who said PiP must come from outsiders?” Mbadi posed. Insurance companies hold a significant amount of Kenyans’ savings. According to the Association of Kenya Insurers, as of June 2024, guaranteed funds managed by life insurance companies were Sh404.6 billion, making up 22.29 per cent of the total Sh1.9 trillion in pension assets under management. Notably, 677 of the 1,036 registered schemes have invested in guaranteed funds. Data from the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) shows that deposit administration is the biggest contributor to the life insurance business, accounting for 36 per cent of the total written premium. The total life fund for deposit administration, personal pension and annuity business totalled Sh481.03 billion, according to the IRA 2023 annual audited statistics. Data from the RBA shows that by June 2024, about Sh1.01 trillion was invested in government securities. “More than half (51.12 per cent) of the scheme assets under management were invested in government securities followed by 20.45 per cent investment in guaranteed funds,” reads the RBA industry report.Chargers QB Justin Herbert does not practice because of left ankle injury

top646 review The concept behind Microsoft's water-evaporative data center design is both simple and ingenious. By leveraging the natural process of evaporation, the data center can effectively cool its servers without the need for traditional water-intensive cooling systems. This is achieved through the strategic placement of water-containing vessels within the facility, allowing for controlled evaporation to dissipate heat and maintain optimal operating conditions.East Tennessee State football coach Tre Lamb said his staff went 8-for-8 in recruiting the high school athletes they most wanted during Thursday’s signing day announcement. Another 5-6 high school players are expected to sign in February. There are 10-12 transfers to be announced at the mid-year will the roster to be rounded out in May. “We got who we wanted to get. The old age of surprises on signing day is over,” Lamb said. “A lot of these guys have been committed for weeks. Our coaches got to South Carolina, Georgia, some of those places when we were playing on the road. Getting them to games and seeing our gameday experience, those were big deciding factors for a lot of guys.” The group includes quarterback Jackson Byrd, cornerbacks Ramani Bruton and Brycen Dowdell, running back Jaiden Daniels, offensive linemen Eli Dorton and Cole Norred, and wide receivers Jeremiah Harrison and wide receiver Trenton Wanjogu. Obviously, quarterback has the biggest spotlight. Jaylen King, who started the first nine games for the Bucs, and reserve Reece Fountain have entered the transfer portal. Gino English, who started two games, will be lost to graduation. Byrd, a 6-foot record-setting quarterback from Clayton, N.C., is expected to be a big star in the future. For now, Lamb has plans to redshirt him. Lamb said that Baylor Hayes, who started the final game of the season against VMI, Steven Johnson, who will be in his second year with the Bucs after transferring from Charlotte, and one of the transfers whom the Bucs are bringing on campus the next couple of weeks will compete for the starting job. Byrd threw for over 10,000 yards and 114 touchdowns during his high school career, and Lamb said he even got a text from New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye’s high school coach that said Byrd was the best player in the state of North Carolina. Lamb talked about a conversation with a former ETSU coach as one reason why Byrd will be redshirted. “He’s small and needs to put some weight on,” Lamb said. “I hate playing freshmen at certain positions. Randy Sanders told me years ago that he hated playing a freshman quarterback. They don’t have experience and aren’t getting a ton of reps in training camp. “Now, Jackson is going to be unbelievable. He could easily be our starter moving forward, but we feel good about Baylor, Steve and the transfer we’re bringing in.” ETSU players who entered the transfer portal were: wide receiver A.J. Johnson, linebacker Ty Anderson, running back Torey Lambert and offensive lineman Tyson Moore. Lamb feels they’ve strengthened those positions with the freshmen wide receivers and Daniels, a running back whom he compared to current Buc player Khamran Laborn. There is some family ties with Daniels, who played at Commerce High School’s Ray Lamb Stadium. The stadium is named after Lamb’s grandfather, and it’s a place where Lamb’s dad, uncle and Furman coach Clay Hendrix all played high school football. Daniels rushed for nearly 6,000 yards over his high school career. “We really think he can help us immediately,” Lamb said. “Three positions are easiest to play early — running back, cornerback and receiver — because they’re based on athletic ability and mindset. He’s just a dynamic playmaker who played quarterback this year.” On the defensive side, the cornerbacks have athletic pedigrees. Burton’s uncle was a member of the 1994 Chicago Bulls NBA team, while Maybin’s father played football at Alabama. It was an area of need with Cam Sims and Jimmy Bowdry playing nearly every snap for the Bucs in 2024. Dorton, an offensive lineman from Anderson County, was named one of the top eight recruits from the Knoxville area and originally committed to Furman. Lamb said they reached out to a pair of Science Hill players, who had better offers, and believe a couple from Greeneville will attend ETSU. They’re also interested in bringing a couple of transfers who played high school football locally back home. But, the No. 1 goal was keeping current players on the roster. “We’re using NIL and revenue sharing to retain our best players,” Lamb said. “We’re in a really good spot right now and I feel good about recruiting. We’re not bringing in 50 new players. We get 10-12 good ones and we’re in good shape.” Stay Informed: Subscribe to Our Newsletter Today
